Wave Stu might just be the Platonic ideal of icy, emotionally fraught synth-pop. On his debut release for Origin Peoples, Stockholm-based musician Michel Isorinne puts paragons of this style like Orchestral Manoeuvres In e Dark in his slipstream. Laced with spoken-word passages from films and television shows, Wave Stu weaves a loose tale about the nature of time, physics, and mortality that can be summarized by the key phrase, uttered by a woman scientist somewhere throughout the album, 'magic is in the molecules...'

Isorinne essentially creates introverted minimalist symphonies in which sprightly synth leads peacefully coexist with melancholy, drone-y undercurrents. Throughout the record, Isorinne's melodies bear a fruitful contrast between the morose and the jubilant. He repeatedly places exceptionally delicate and beautiful tunes amid subliminal waves of pensiveness. It truly is a masterly balancing act. e zenith of this approach is Side A's closing track, in which gorgeous countermelodies intertwine like lovers on a tropical beach while a pistoning rhythm pumps up the libido. It's instant paradisiacal bliss.

Side B contains Wave Stu 's most cheerful, uptempo track yet it never bursts into full-on euphoria. Elsewhere, Isorinne reverts back to more somber moods: an eerie, methodical chiller full of quiet wonderment and subdued sparkle reminiscent of Casino Versus Japan, Plone, and others of their gnomic ilk; a low-key anthem in which '70s Vangelis grandiosi meets the workmanlike bass-synth chug of Ulrich Schnauss; an elegiac piece that conjures an intimate majes ; a bass-heavy dirge festooned with forlorn wisps of melodiousness.

The complex, paradoxical happy/sad pendulum at the heart of Isorinne's music lends Wave Stu a tingly resonance that will reward repeat listens. Please welcome an extravagantly rich synth-pop classic.

Last autumn the long-awaited debut 'Colour' by Pete Josef saw its release on Sonar Kollektiv. Now the first 12inch with four fantastic remixes arrives (the digital release comes even with six of them). The remix by British duo LV for 'Hope' is the perfect kick-off and whets one's appetite for more. Their sensuous rework accommodates Josef's voice immaculately and lets the bassline vibrate as gracefully as a treetop in the vernal wind.
Appropriately another duo, this one from Montreal, delivers an ultra smooth remix for 'Spring At Last': The Black 80's fortify herewith their claim to be the next hot shit. Also a name to watch out for over the next few months is the one by Fabian Dikoff. Everything he learned by his mentor Andre Lodemann is translated in his work into an incredible, chameleonic vision of house music. To be heard on his remix for 'Colour' and its dub version. Another remix for 'Colour' comes all the way out of the prosperous Vancouver scene by the Potatohead People. The 'Lights Off' as well as the 'Lights On' remix are both gentle RnB with the emphasis on the snare and on the lovey-dovey synth melody. All in all, exactly the sort of remixes not only Pete Josef was wishing for, but also we as the listeners, to tune into this summer's groove.

Tim Green is back with another brace of high impact club tunes of the sort that have made him one of the most in demand producers of the day. Whether serving up rolling techno treats for Cocoon, essential mixes for the Body Language series on Get Physical or laying down compelling club sets in the DJ booth, Brit Tim Green is unstoppable right now. Here he steps up to the Get Weird imprint with two more tantalising cuts that show just how broad and brilliant an artist he is. Stirring opener 'For A Memory' is eleven minutes of wordless and intoxicating female vocals, slick rubbery drums and plunging bass. The overall effect is hypnotic, rolling and perfectly groovy, and it will no doubt have whole dancefloors locked under its spell. Some little melodic explosions, sweeping filters and luscious pads all help add a real air of grace to proceedings that mark it out as another classic from Green.
'For A Distant Memory' is a subtle but noteworthy reworking of the same cut. In this one, the drums are less direct and more stripped back, there is a focus on the angelic, glowing pads and on spine tingling slices of synth that are reflective and emotive as they drop in and out. It is a perfectly trance inducing, heart warming cut that the likes of Lee Burridge at his All Day I Dream parties, or various DJs playing on a sun kissed terrace around the globe, will all lap right up. These are two more essential tracks from the ever on point Tim Green.

Arandel 'Turbatrix' (Computer Club)

'Turbatrix', the eighth release on Sheffield's Computer Club imprint, is provided by mysterious French artist Arandel. No newcomer to the musical spectrum, Arandel has long been associated with the French label InFiné, alongside global names such as Carl Craig and Apparat.

'Locus I' surprises as analogue rasps and pings spar with lush synths and a driving 4/4 rhythmic code. Key track 'Locus II' is a siren to the ghosts of Sheffield's electronic musical heritage, with relentless bleeps and a concrete sub-bass.

'Locus III' is a midnight romp through a neon-tinged city where only the holograms know your name. The fourth and final track, a blissed-out ambient piece soaked in celestial sounds, is a meditative end to a thrilling journey of invention and musical mastery.

We have been waiting for Pele to crop up on a release from the footy mad Rothmans and what a time to play that hand card. Teaming up once more with his Aussie team mate Dawn Again and a first apperance from Leeds legends Clandestino. The first track from the EP 'Cobblejam' is nothing short of first class, a worthy italo, chuggy ,powerhouse that leaves absolutely nothing to the imagination. The b-side finds us with the slightly strangely named 'Woman For A Day' theres nothing strange about the track itself though . A deep and dark track that slowly drives forward into the abyss. Finishing off the record is an excellent remix from the lads over at Clandestino. Their Dessert Trance vibe brings the record together as sweetly as Pele brought together that 1970 World Cup Winning team.

"Den Heliga Ån" (The Sacred River) is the debut album of ambient wizard and techno connoisseur Aos. The album is themed around the river Helge Å that runs through the town of Åhus in the southern parts of Sweden. The town in which Aos grew up. The music reflects both a deep love of the river and the nature that surrounds it and has a melancholic feel of a time passed by.On the course of this album Aos invites us to take the journey on the river with him: from the sweeping electronic gestures of timelessness in Tiden upphör vid Mölleholmen, via the melodic pings that can be heard throughout Graften, and the ritualistic electronics at play in Jag eldar vass vid Kavrö until the blissful mellowness of Vår i biflödena - where spring has arrived, and both the river and the music are filled with a calm melancholy, yet joyful in it's celebration of a winter that is ending. This debut album collects six tracks of soft techno, ambient atmospheres and field recordings with a close attention to details, harmonics and electronics. Composed and recorded in Stockholm by Aos. The NOWHERE 01 Vinyl Sampler is a carefully curated selection of freshly crafted propellants pressed on wax for the very first time. Quince gives us a saturated electronic work-out, combining gritty drum sounds with bass guitar and odd timed synth zaps. Kurt Baggaley's Detect was a digital exclusive from his Remembering Infinity EP, now finally available on black gold! It features a similar electro groove but uses artificial intelligence to add vocoder sounds and digitally aliased robot tears. Fader From Borneo takes a more frontal approach providing a catchy bass riff with warm pads and synthesised strings to guide you in a comfortable trance.

On the B-side we find Kiani & His Legion with another one of his emo burners, trademark nature inspired synth sounds and cinematic storytelling intertwine, pure bliss. Closing off this vinyl sampler is Sigward with a trippy and hypnotising cut that draws you in with razor-sharp synth signposts. Meda Fury presents the debut release of Malmö's Armand Jakobsson AKA Rimbaudian. Taking his name from the modernist poet, Jakobson's music is a beguiling mixture of thumping house, tripped out rhythmic excursions and blissed out, lattice-like synth melodies.

Jacking basement sleaze is the order of the day with opener 'Let Me Beat U', coming on like a vintage Trelik cut, 'Werka 8' lightens up proceedings with a stomping beat and carefree spiralling synths that shimmer with light, 'Holy Flesh' boasts a ghetto drum track and dizzying flute-synth refrain sure to work dancers into a frenzy, things cool down with the mysterious, glacial pads and tuff bass pulse of 'Hold Up Hold On'.From a family of musicians (his father is opera singer, mother a music teacher, sister is a cellist and opera singer), he grew up surrounded with music, but stubbornly rejected formal study, teaching himself composition and production whilst at university in Edinburgh. "I was there for 4 years, and it probably had a bigger impact on me than Malmö - It's such a moody city, and having been a too sensitive young guy there for such a long time definitely left its traces. I can't say how, exactly, it affected me, but i like to think of my musical career in terms of chapters, and that was the first and probably most significant one, up until now."

Latency's tenth release is a journey through Nonplace mastermind Burnt Friedman's elusive repertoire, recorded between 1993 and 2011. Brilliant and pioneering, this is percussive, dubbed-out, minimal, electro-acoustic music. With guest appearances by Hayden Chisholm and Takeshi Nishimoto.

Emotional Rescue delves deep in to the past with the release of the first ever recordings by UK post-industrial, ambient pioneers O Yuki Conjugate (OYC). Recorded in Nottingham in 1983, the EP's four tracks showcase OYC's early sound: a beat-driven, lo-fi that places them alongside the early British electronic pioneers.
OYC, celebrating their 35th anniversary this year, are known for their "dirty ambient" sound - but it wasn't always thus. In their earliest incarnation OYC explored a more industrial approach characterised by tortured analogue drum machines, one-finger synth lines, played bass, tape loops and even flute. This naive sound template lasted until their debut album 'Scene in Mirage' (1984) before being jettisoned in favour of more ambient explorations.The story behind these recordings is one of brotherly love between bands. OYC swapped time in their rehearsal space for a day's use of a four-track cassette portastudio owned by their associates, Metamorphosis. Three of the tracks included were recorded on May 1st 1983 at The End Room (literally a studio at the back of one of OYC's parents houses) with the remaining track (live favourite "The Clattering Song") being produced a couple of months later.
To date OYC have remained largely unknown in the UK due to their wilfully obscure approach. They have released a series of very well regarded studio albums and innumerable spin-off and side projects that has recently seen a revival of interest in their early years, including appearances on Cherry Red's compilation of formative UK electronic scene 'Close to the Noise Floor' and Optimo's compilation of Fourth World-style music 'Miracle Steps'.
Accepting their fate as musical outsiders, OYC continue to make music with little reference to the wider world. This EP makes a fine addition to that body of work.

DsorDNE (pronounced Disordine) is a project from Torino, Italy that evolved as group out of the electronic experimental post punk project Novostj in 1987. At the core of DsorDNE is Marco Milanesio, musical engineer and co-founder of the HAX record label, joined by a revolving cast of musicians. Their spectrum ranged from experimental to structured electro-poetry and Soundtrack like instrumental electronic music. In 1987 they released their first track on a split-single with The Legendary Pink Dots. Between 1987 and 1994 they released 6 full length albums, 3 split-EPs and appeared on various cassette compilations. à Un Sole (Itâs a Sun) was the groupâs only vinyl full length originally released in 1990 on HAX. Itâs 8 tracks of electro-beat poetry and experimentation recorded between July 1989 and January 1990 by Marco Milanesio (music) and Roberta Ongaro (vocals) with guests Claudio Burdese (guitar), Danilo Beltrame (guitar) and Cristiana Bauducco (vocals). The album is broken up into two distinct halves. Side A contains four chunks of hard hitting, percussive patterns and rushing bass sequences. Dark, moody female vocals force their monologues through the machinery in their native Italian tongue. The traditional song structure is carefully avoided by giving lyrics equal opportunities be they recited, half-sung, whispered or spoken. Side B displays moodier moments, less savage attacks and subtler sensuality, veering towards the more melodic and existential. All songs have been remastered by George Horn at Fantasy Studios in Berkeley. The record is housed in an exact replica of the original jacket featuring a black and white drawing with silver metallic spot color housed in a clear PVC plastic cover with a three color screen-printed design. Each copy includes a 11x11❠double-sided lyrics sheet with English translations as well an 8x11❠sheet with original press notes from 1990 by Marco Pustianaz.

Joyous electro-braindance-acid hardware wonkouts, straight outta Grenoble. Binary Digit follows a string of cassette-only releases with a vinyl debut on Dream Ticket, the new label from the team behind Lisbon's staple Carpet & Snares Records. Come for the razor edge highs and mutating basslines, and stay for the moments of pure pop that reveal themselves inbetween.

Soft Armour is Christian Hougaard, a Danish producer. 'Multi Terrain' is his debut full length, after two ep's. The album is a mesmerizing marriage between ambient and IDM, loaded with soundscapes, field recordings, bass lines and dynamic electronic percussion. That being said, don't expect typical techno, drum & bass or dubstep beats. The ones on this album seem to breathe their own air, go their own way and drag you into an immersive audio adventure. Think Autechre, µ-Ziq or Squarepusher, that will get you closer to the sounds on this album.

Two of the most renowned and unrelenting actors of the early Copenhagen punk scene and, later on, the experimental scene—have joined forces on Danish electronic record label Infinite Waves.

Despite not being an autobiographical record, Rex Kyed is at the very least themed around periods of the artists' own lives, of desolation, exiting and entering bubbles of comfort, being apart from family, and on a constant transit from A to B and back again. A broadly minimalistic record filled with aesthetic synth lines and a melancholic piano key here and there.

Some things simply take time, so after and inbetween several releases on Cocoon Recordings throughout 2017, after one year Rico Puestel returns to his creative outlet [ahrt] with four delightfully imbuing reworks of the label's debut release "Astrayed" !

did he ever really leave berlin yes: sascha funke was regularly in cologne. but then nowhere else. sure, as a dj and live artist he travelled around the world. but as a producer he always remained true to his peer labels bpitch control and kompakt with some minor exceptions.
so far, so good. but now, just after the german that started his early attempts as a producer to-gether with paul kalkbrenner dropped some new feverish spaced out solo eps on imprints like multi culti and tiga's turbo recordings label, the berlin born producer, dj and football fever victim re-leases his new, third solo album 'lotos land' on tokyo's finest platform for diverse musical adven-tures endless flight.
a step out of the usual environment, not only in terms of the address. funke embraces fresh sound territories without forgetting his past. with already two solo albums on ellen allien's bpitch control label under his wings and the longplayer 'unknown', that he tuned in with julienne dessagne (aka fantastic twins) under the alias saschienne in 2012 for kompakt, on the shelf, he knows what it means to write and dramatize an album.
all tracks on 'lotos land' are well selected. together they built a bewitching story arc. with some singing help from the scottish crooner david wilson, voice of the glasgow based melancholic dance sensation junto club and the tel aviv born musician autarkic, exotic but yet perfect to sing along melodies partly enthral the listeners, too.
and even if sascha funke is part of the club culture since the nineties: his musical memory and sensibility goes way back before the early techno and house eruptions. for his new works, that all had been produced in berlin during the year 2016, he removed the dogma of functionality and shifted into a riskier, more open terrain, that does not offer club sensations mainly.
'i think i would not have made such a diverse album without the time with saschienne. before saschienne i mainly worked sample-based and produced exclusively at the computer. by working with julienne as saschienne i discovered my love for the instrument.
"playing" with the different synths is for me the greatest progress and ultimately also the best pos-sible form of expression for my music.' he confesses.
for his new tracks he used several kind of gear - from a korg arp odyssey to a dave smith prophet 8, moog voyager, solina string keyboard or a yamaha pacifica guitar. stylistically his new orchestra lead him to a mesmerizing meltdown of trance, techno, synth-wave, post-punk and ambient parti-cles.
'the use of all the synths allows you to work more emotional' funke explains and points his finger to the emotional landscape of 'lotos land' that delivers enchanted atmospheres, sensible stomping grounds, funky twisted spheres and tragically hip psychedelic zones.
at large there is an unmistakable strong uk influence. be it new wave, pop or early dance and techno stuff. sometimes the bass rolls like in a the cure song, then dreamy synth sceneries arise to stick in the mind.
the cover artwork comes from mule musiq and endless flight hamburg based home illustrator stefan marx. it features a marx styled interpretation of 1901 illustration by the british painter wil-liam edward frank britten, that was made to the poem 'the lotos-eaters', written by the poet alfred tennyson.
the picture as well as the poem, after which funke also named his album, tells much about the record. where the drawing, the words and the music come together, everyone has to find for themselves. only one thing can be said: sascha funke traveled far for his new music to reach an altered state. and nothing else should happen to those, who surrender to his latest music.

We've been huge fans of Tim's work since the release of his first self-titled EP on Astrolab. His analogue sound has been described as both 'Death Mulch' and 'Rare Gloom'. For his second Work For Love twelve, he continues the journey into dark spaces with four more deep synth freakers from his Fish Island School of Synthesis Studio.

After releases on esteemed labels including Emotional Response, World Unknown, Bird Scarer, Hoga Nord, Rotters Golf Club (as The Asphodells with Andrew Weatherall) and his own label 'Crimes of The Future' which he runs with Scott Fraser, his debut album 'Where is the Champion' was released earlier in the year to critical acclaim. Tim will continue to push forward and we feel privileged to see him return for a WFL round two.

Following Cottam's critically acclaimed 'I Can't Carry On' EP, which marked the inaugural release on FatCat records' new electronic sub label FCR, the highly-rated DJ/producer's new 12' drops on March ..., also via FCR.

'Locked in The Groove' is a groovy, boogie chugger, which powerfully ebbs and flows over nearly 11 captivating minutes, and 'Sample Heavy Dub' is all dark 'n' heady eastern atmospherics, whilst 'Dreaming Of Another Place' is a fathoms deep, epic journey into mystical and majestic dub-house.

An avid participant in Preston's early rave scene, Paul Cottam inevitably pursued DJing, progressing to warm up slots for his techno heroes Surgeon and Regis. Tentative steps into production using Ableton were met with such encouragement that Cottam's debut releases began to appear.

A set of four untitled, un-marketed and un-promoted vinyl self-releases created a huge organic stir with record collectors, attentive journalists and DJs including Moodyman, Gerd Janson and Soul Clap.
This buzz was helped in part by speculation on his identity, but was primarily due to his simple yet effective, flavour-filled and groovesome tracks that blurred the boundaries between re-edits, reworks and originals, moving between slow-mo chug and more straight-up house, whilst encompassing elements of disco, hip hop, nu soul and afrobeat.

Since then Cottam's reputation has steadily grown, with vinyl releases for Story, Wolf, Aus, Use Of Weapons, Sound Of Speed, Ruff Draft and Versatile, plus remixes for Pattern Select on Delusions of Grandeur and Last Waltz on Endless Flight. Paul has also played DJ sets for Fabric, Resident Advisor, Renate, Arma 17, Melting Pot and Sub Club, plus a residency at Bohemian Grove.

Inverted Audio recently summarized Cottam's form, stating 'an unsung herald of a certain underground house quality, he traverses his epoch with equanimity and dedication, rich of a back catalogue that could easily put to shame some of the hottest yet ephemeral sensations of the moment.'

Kohl is the dub-based project of New York City artist and musician Nathaniel Young. With Kohl, Nathaniel focuses on enveloping melodies and sounds that are often contrasted with subtle and evolving minimal textures and the rhythmic patterns generated from them. The resulting music is contemplative and warm, invoking reflection while maintaining a sense of motion/evolution. The Kohl project is an outlet for personal transformation, it is Young rewiring his understanding of morality and ethics. Interpretations of 'right' and 'wrong', 'good' and 'evil'. Musically, Learned Ethics / Imposed Ethics is a fine collection of ultra-textural ambient pieces with minimal changes like "The Possibility Of The Infinite", slow tempo tracks like "Moral Supposition", the dance-floor focused "Resolution (Empathy)", and "The Inquisition", which displays Kohl's signature dub-techno style.

Peter Kremeier, AKA Losoul, has always been an artist we've greatly admired here at Hypercolour, so it's a real thrill to have him on the label at long last. A huge catalogue of eclectic, distinctive and funky music for labels like Playhouse, Moodmusic and Freak 'n' Chic, Losoul turns in two exceptional tracks on the 'Slowly Turning' release here.
'Daddy, What's A Rise' is classic Losoul; a heavy low slung groove never lets up, with micro disco stabs and distant vocal snippets, looping round and round for over 10 minutes, but without ever standing still, the filtering and deft touches keep things moving at just the right funky pace.
B side cut 'Time & Space' is a glitchy and dubbed out affair, a solid 4/4 beat underpins a myriad of delayed percussion and panning synths, spatial effects and an incessant chord stab, head music for the heads indeed!
Losoul contributes to the Hypercolour resurgence that has pulled in left of center releases from the likes of Eliphino, West Norwood Cassette Library, Will Azada and Maya Jane Coles over recent months, with plenty more goodies lined up for the coming months ahead.

USA Import was ready to export its own music. Antwerp bio techno. Homegrown and uncut. These tracks are evergreens from that place and time.

Portuguese artist Ka§par gives Parisian label Escapade its third release. The four tracks span across a wide range of electronic sounds, telling a story that calls on many emotions. 'Wail Of A Loon' opens the record with an experimental atmosphere. After this laid back introduction, Ka§par goes into a much stronger style: 'Rigged's energy and catchy, twirling melody make it a total banger. On the B side, the mood gets much warmer and groovy. 'Vital' is the perfect tune to warm up a dancefloor, thanks to a swinging rhythm, mesmerizing vocal samples and funky synth lines. 'Alma D'Ouro' rounds up the record with strong jazzy vibes. Beautiful chords and piano solos never dissapoint!
