Sonny Landreths Album „Bound By The Blues“ markiert eine Rückkehr zu den musikalischen Wurzeln des Slide-Gitarristen. Es präsentiert eine kühne, großartig klingende Sammlung von Aufnahmen. Described as a particularly strong hard bop set, the album contains 5 cuts, including 2 Rollins originals “Pent-Up House” and one of his best known pieces, “Valse Hot”. This new edition of the album is released as part of the OJC Series on 180-gram vinyl pressed at RTI with all-analogue mastering from the original tapes at Cohearent Audio and a Stoughton Tip-On Jacket.

Dem Pianisten Sonny Clark (1931-1963) wurde gelegentlich nachgesagt, er habe sein Licht zu sehr unter
den Scheffel gestellt und sei auf seinen eigenen Platten zu oft in die Rolle des Begleiters geschlüpft. Für das
1957 entstandene Album ”Sonny’s Crib” gilt das jedoch nicht. Mit einem fantastischen Sextett interpretiert
er hier zunächst drei Standards, bevor er zwei seiner bekanntesten Eigenkompositionen vorstellt. ”Sonny’s
Crib” zählt neben John Coltranes ”Blue Coltrane” zu den Alben, die den aufregenden Hard-Bop-Sound der
späten 1950er Jahre bei Blue Note geprägt haben.

Sonny Boy Williamson (Alex Miller 1912 - 1965) was one of the most inspiring
harmonica players in blues history. Though he took his name from another well-known
harmonica player, no one really sounded like him. Williamson developed his own
signature harmonica style, always showing a metronome like timing and an endlessly
inventive technique.
This release consists of Sonny Boy's complete debut LP, Down And Out Blues ,
originally released in 1959 on the Chess Records subsidiary label, Checker. Featuring
Muddy Waters, Jimmy Rogers, Willie Dixon, and Otis Spann, among others.
Sonny Boy Williamson toured England with American Folk Blues Festival in 1963 and
1965 and appeared on the iconic tv music show Ready Steady Go (8 January 1965)
backed by UK band,The T-Bones with Gary Farr.

Sonny Rollins and the Contemporary Leaders“ wurde ursprünglich 1959 vom Westküsten-Jazzlabel Contemporary Records veröffentlicht. Rollins wird von einem Who’s Who der Musiker des Labels unterstützt, darunter Hampton Hawes (Klavier), Barney Kessel (Gitarre), Leroy Vinnegar (Bass) und Shelly
Manne (Schlagzeug). Diese Ausgabe, die als Teil der Acoustic Sounds Series erscheint, enthält (AAA)-

Einer der ganz großen Albumklassiker des Impulse!-Labels: “Alfie” wurde 1966 als Soundtrack zum gleichnamigen britischen Film mit Michael Caine in der Hauptrolle veröffentlicht. Tenorsaxofonist Sonny Rollins
hatte die Musik, die er eigens für den Film geschrieben hatte, zuvor schon in London mit britischen Musikern für den Film eingespielt. Für das Impulse!-Album, das zum Filmstart veröffentlicht wurde und Platz 17
der Billboard Rhythm’n’Blues-Charts erreichte, nahm er die Musik mit amerikanischer Starbesetzung und
Arrangements von Oliver Nelson aber noch einmal neu auf.

Sonny Clark is one of the long list of fine jazz musicians who died too young. He died at age 31. This album from 1957 excellently captures what was the definition of jazz at that time, and this became one of the best jazz albums of all time. Sonny Clark's playing on this album has the sound of beautiful perfection, and (along with the great work of Paul Chambers on bass and ‘Philly’ Joe Jones on drums) the playing really swings. Sonny shines on “Tadd's Delight” and “I Didn't Know What Time It Was” with the crisp support from Chambers and ‘Philly’ Joe. He takes on the challenge of 'Be-bop', a very difficult tune, and pulls it off with his typical Sonny Clark touch.

A classic of the genre, “Way Out West” was tenor saxophonist Sonny Rollins’ first album for west coast label Contemporary Records when released in 1957. The first album to employ the “strolling” technique, Rollins was backed by Ray Brown (bass) and Shelly Manne (drums). This new edition, released as part of the Acoustic Sounds Series, features (AAA) lacquers cut from the original master tapes by Bernie Grundman and is pressed on 180-gram vinyl at QRP, and presented in a tip-on jacket.

When Sonny Rollins arrived to Los Angeles in early 1957, he discovered that Ray Brown was also in town with Oscar Peterson's trio and that Shelly Manne was on hand leading a band of his own. The result was a March 7, 1957 recording session, Way Out West, which marked Rollins' very first date in a trio setting and his first recording without the accompaniment of a piano or guitar. The saxophonist was at the height of his career during this period and in 1957 he was named the "New Star" tenor saxophonist in the Down Beat critics' poll. Thelonious Monk and Sonny Rollins were both giants of jazz, each known for their individual approaches. Monk, with his unorthodox approach to rhythm and harmony, was one of jazz's most original composers and pianists. Rollins, one of the greatest saxophonists in jazz history, was known for his inventive and bold improvisations. Thelonious Monk was still establishing his reputation during this time. Though considered a genius by some, Monk's highly original style, marked by dissonant harmonies, abrupt rhythmic shifts, and a percussive attack on the piano, was still divisive among critics and audiences in the early '50s. It wasn't until later in the decade, when he started working with Columbia Records and gained wider recognition, that he achieved broader commercial success. Sonny Rollins, though younger, was already a notable figure in the jazz scene by this point, having played with Miles Davis, Charlie Parker, and Bud Powell. He was known for his inventive and bold improvisational style. In these recordings, Rollins was solidifying his status as one of the major voices on tenor saxophone. The album shows both musicians in their prime, experimenting with harmonies and extended forms. Even though the sessions were recorded at different times, there is a strong synergy between them, particularly in how Monk's percussive piano style complements Rollins' flowing saxophone. A record that captures a moment in jazz history, a testament to the artistic brilliance of both musicians and a significant piece of jazz history, blending the freewheeling spirit of jam sessions with complex, forwardthinking compositions.

Freedom Weaver includes an elaborate booklet with rare photos by Ed van der Elsken, Jean-Pierre Leloir, Bob Parent and many others; lead liners by jazz scholar Bob Blumenthal, and new interviews with Rollins himself, Branford Marsalis, James Carter, Joe Lovano, James Brandon Lewis and Peter Brötzmann. As Sonny Falls, Ryan Ensley makes rollicking and resonant rock songs that feel like self-contained journeys. The Chicago bandleader combines breezy, timeless songwriting with a bracing emotional potency that sneaks up on you.
