NICOLAS REPAC - Swing-Swing

Swing-Swing

05.06.2018

ÖRVAR SMARASON - Light Is Liquid

Popszene. Diverse Kollaborationen und Alben wie zuletzt "Team Dreams" (mit Sóley und Sin Fang) pflastern
seinen Karriereweg.
In
"Erstlingswerk" zustande bringt. Chapeau!

Pionneering production from the Düsseldorf mid 80s electronic underground world. Transferred for the first ever time from the original cassette to vinyl and CD.

Konrad Kraft (Detlef Funder) is one of the still overlooked producers of Düsseldorfs fertile electronic music scene. ARCTICA was originally released on Cassette on Funder's imprint SDV TONTRÄGER in 1987 in a handmade edition of about 50 copies only.

Reduced to its essential musical elements, ARCTICA certainly contains some of the most uncategorizable and bewildering pieces of mid-eighties electronic music. Set between the areas of post punk and early techno, the album undulates between analogue as well as digital instrumentation. After Konrad Kraft's appearance on the enthusiastically received compilation Sammlung - Elektronische Kassettenmusik, Düsseldorf 1982 - 1989 (compiled by Stefan Schneider for bureau-b in 2017) TAL presents his full-length album for the first ever time on vinyl, CD and digital formats.

In the mid-eighties synthesizers had become increasingly affordable due to digital electronics, allowing more and more people to produce music. It was also a 'post - band' period. People now had projects, often being musician, producer, engineer and label manager all at once. Since most electronic records of the 1970s Krautrock scene were not widely available in Germany and also somewhat out of fashion, it is not irrelevant to know that the prime sources of inspiration were records by Cabaret Voltaire, Throbbing Gristle, Dome or Nocturnal Emissions. Record shops like HEARTBEAT, which existed in Düsseldorf between 1985 and 1987, offered a wide range of experimental music and served as an umbrella for the disparate strands of the electronic side of post punk. HEARTBEAT also attracted a loosely connected scene of young musicians who shared a deep seated passion for electronic sounds. Cassettes were the medium of choice for self produced recordings.

At the time of the ARCTICA sessions, the newly set up SDV studio consisted of a Tascam 38, an eight-track tape recorder, and only a handful of synthesizers such as a Roland JX3P and a Korg Monopoly. The style of Konrad Kraf'ts productions displayed (ever since and up until today), a strong adherence to an idea of continual self-creation and a quality of wanting to be responsible for one's own identity. Even three decades after its recording, ARCTICA still evokes images of an expedition into an edgy cold place which has strange wonders, polar lights, structures of ice and innumerable worlds and creatures in store.

Konrad Kraft (who today runs Paraschall mastering studios): "In the early 70's I got a transistor radio as a gift and immediately fell in love with the shortwaves. So many different sounds that was truly fascinating. I can imagine that nowadays as music is endlessly compressed to fit into mobile phones and as music on the radio sounds dreadfully the same, there might be a renewed interest by a young generation in discovering electronic sounds. I can listen to ARCITCA much better now than when it originally came out, because there is a distance which allows me to approach the recordings on a more neutral plane.

Even though more than 30 years have passed I know the tracks and the prevalent mood of the time captured in these recordings is still very much with me. ARCTICA seems to sound even more contemporary today than it did in 1987."

That Which Is Not Said

12inch2MR-033 / 158661

24.05.2018

That Which Is Not Said is an album about learning to accept oneself within, and accept the reality of all that comes from without. It's an eponymous abstract exposition on navigating the realms of intimacy that the living world inevitably unveils and their equally inevitable fallout, the panic of abandonment and the loss of desire, and dragging oneself back up the hill once the lonely valleys lose their allure. Written and recorded over the course of two years in TWINS home studio in Atlanta with various synths, samplers, drum machines, and his very own flesh-and-muscle vocals, That Which Is Not Said is the result of countless studio sessions and experiments that were refined and distilled into the songs presented here, rigorously worked out through live performances and repeated critical overhaul. The material was all conceived more or less the same way: a mood or feeling would be channeled through whatever machines were plugged in at the time and eventually a foundation would be developed upon which a loose structure would be improvised. Experimenting and
throwing around vocals came next, making up phrases and lyrics on the fly until something clicked and a pathway cleared through the fog and mist.

On the first long player release on Ken Oath records, we are proud as punch to step away from the dancefloor entirely and bring you a deep journey into the alfresco inspirations of life in the Australian bush. Sydney's Angophora (Max Santilli and Jacob Fugar) present Scenes, where resting pulses and humid atmospherics frame gentle percussion, warm synth work and tasteful guitar licks that take a note from the Balearic handbook but remain clear in their appreciation and respect for the sounds and colours of Australian nature. Music best listened with the ancient ochres of the Australian outback in view. So seamlessly will the sonic palette of Scenes fit your surroundings, you'll begin to question whether or not these gentle surroundings are being emitted from the wax spinning on your plate or Eucalypts whirring in the wind around you

Manchester's techno alchemist and master of the Roland TR-808, the enigmatic MR.RAW, debuting MANCDETROIT 12' on WIN or LOOSE Records straight outta Toronto CA! Long term nightclub shaman on the Northwest of England circuit, Raw served time in Rotterdam's early 90s gabba circles before returning back to Manchester to twist brain's n bodies with his wild blend of freestyle techno. Raw's witnessed trends in production go from hardware to soft and back again but he's never strayed from a solid rack mount set up based solely around the TR-808. With a few added choice fx processors Raw's style is loose'n'live and captures a pure spirit rarely exercised by today's pacified youth.
"Perseus Dance" sounds like the kind of shit the great Ron Hardy would jam on, with two copies, for hours. Inflicting a sherm-stick flavored mind-blast to the floor that may have indeed caused the good man to blush, we find percolating 808 percussion woven together with a mystic, fizzing lead line and twangy analogue artifacts. Darkside acid dragged wailing and whining from Rusholmes drains.
Flip and we have "Hard On": a twisted x-rated porno horror jam. Raw's rapid-fire double-speed drum loops firing away while a plethora of abhorrent vox and coital sounds converge onto the track. A total wrecking ball of filth and hellish distortion which just smolders away in the basement of some sadistic nightclub like a rotten but highly intoxicating fungus ready to switch on any passing freaks.

Thomas Brinkmann is one of the great producers of Techno music and modern dance music. He initially gained notoriety in the experimental electronic music and Techno community for his full-length 'variations' of material by Wolfgang Voigt under his Mike Ink moniker, and Richie Hawtin. The variations were made by playback of the original artist records on a turntable of Brinkmann's design, which has two tone arms with separate outputs for left and right channels. The turntables were then pitched down from 33rpm to 27rpm and the results recorded and mixed. Both Voigt and Hawtin were sufficiently impressed they released the results on their own labels. Since then Thomas Brinkmann has produced some all-time classic dance tracks, many of which are collected here in what is a personal selection by Thomas Brinkmann himself. There are unreleased tracks, different versions, and tracks that have never been released on vinyl. A full colour 20-page book with track notes by Thomas Brinkmann and photos from his personal collection is included. Limited edition box. Highly Recommended!

R&S welcomes Acid Mondays for a 12" of lysergic house music that reaches far into the outer cosmos.
Formed "somewhere in the 5th dimension' Acid Mondays is the cosmic coalition of fellow psychonauts Negghead (Dan Ward) and Lex Wolf (Alex Wolfenden).

Repeated transformative visits to Ibiza culminated in landing regular slots at Circoloco where they have been testing this tune in the dance all Summer long.

'Universal Rhythm', their latest interstellar dispatch and debut on R&S is their finest work to date. An anthemic paean to the cosmos that features an impassioned spoken word missive from shamanistic MC Shovell, impressively recorded in a single take, making the case for the universality of experience and oneness of all beings.

Latin rhythms fuse with a driving Fender Rhodes lick (provided by JD73) and percolating cow bells to hypnotic effect. This calls to mind a combination of classic Carl Craig and Villalobos at his most playful. R&S new signing The Maghreban supplies a killer dubbed out take on the original that strips away the heavy kicks and pumps up the percussion, hurtling the synth pads to the fore that comes on like John Carpenter peaking on MDMA.

Marten Van Der Vleuten - Presents Integrity 'outrage' 2x12"

R&S welcome Dutch dance icon Maarten van der Vleuten back into the fold. - 'Outrage' is a compilation of Maarten van der Vleuten's Integrity project tracks, originally released on R&S sub-label Outrage Recordings in 1992, now remastered by Matt Colton Maarten van der Vleuten is one of the most influential figures in the Dutch scene, and also a man of many aliases - between 1987 to 2007 he racked up releases with over two dozen projects producing Detroit techno, electro, house, experimental and ambient tracks and remixes. Still highly active and inspired in 2018, R&S see the Outrage release as a perfect opportunity to re-introduce Van der Vleuten's masterful productions to a new generation, adding to his existing influential fans such as Optimo, Global Communication, Ellen Allien and Dave Clarke. During the 90s he recorded mainly dance/techno for R&S Records, as Orpheus, 48V Phantom Power and Mantrax. He also memorably released on Apollo Records (check his excellent In-Existence 'Moonwater' album), Djax-Up-Beats, See Saw and Klang Elektronik amongst others.
Van Der Vleuten's ongoing collaboration with R&S founder Renaat Vanderpapeliere saw the later set up Outrage Recordings in early 1992 to release Van der Vleuten's tracks that didn't fit on R&S Records, recording as Integrity, Zimt, Flux and Pultec.
'Every couple of weeks i would drive up to Ghent with my new tracks and meet Renaat,' explains Martin. "We then went straight to Foon Mastering where we played the DATs and decided which tracks would be cut - i had carte blanche when it came to the 'sound' of the label. Van der Vleuten's music on Outrage Recordings moved in the opposite direction of the contemporary rave and gabber scenes; while Techno became faster and shifted to a more aggressive sound, Van der Vleuten focused more on composing and arranging over danceability. This resulted in these EP's being difficult to sell back in 92 but listening now it feels vital and fresh well over two decades since they were recorded which is an obvious sign of
Van Der Vleuten's deft talent. The release also includes Van der Vleuten's collaborations with another dutch icon, Mike Kivits (aka DJ Aardvarck). The pair first met In 1989 when Kivits would sometimes play his demos on cassette-tapes at local clubs. The pair became fast friends and Van Der Vieuten invited Kivits into the studio where they found a natural chemistry that ultimately resulted in the tracks 'Nightshift' and 'Intens' which feature on 'Outrage', both written and recorded on the same day.

Jan Jelinek & Computer Soup - Improvisations And Edits, Tokyo 26.09.2001

Faitiche releases the album Improvisations And Edits, Tokyo 26.09.2001 on vinyl for the first time. For the original 2002 CD on Soup-Disk and Sub Rosa (Audiosphere), Jan Jelinek and the Japanese trio Computer Soup (Satoru Hori - trumpet, Osamu Okubo - toys & electronics, Kei Ikeda - toys & electronics) presented eight tracks all recorded one afternoon in the trio's living room in Tokyo. They are excerpts from a joint group improvisation that subsequently underwent rudimentary editing, on which Jelinek and Computer Soup worked separately.

Jelinek met the three musicians at his first concert in Japan in 2001, at Tokyo's Yellow club, where Computer Soup performed as the support act. Delighted by their free improvisation on pocket-sized electronic toys, trumpet and oscillators, he arranged to meet Hori, Okubo and Ikeda a few days later for a session at their apartment. The resulting three-hour recording, made on their living room floor, formed the basis for Improvisations and Edits. A few days later, Jelinek returned to Berlin. Over the following months, they separately chose passages from the recording that were then edited and assembled into an album.

Formed in Tokyo in 1996 as a quintet (including Shusaku Hariya and Daisuke Oishi), Computer Soup began by performing with acoustic instruments on the streets of Shibuya. Ikeda und Okubo soon switched instruments, and from then on the group's minimalistic but densely woven sound was defined by electronic toys, oscillators and Satoru Hori's trumpet. Their first album was released in 1997 on the Japanese label Soup Disk. Eight further releases followed.

From the reviews of Improvisations and Edits, Tokyo 26.09.2001 in 2003:

"The mind-blowing first track Straight Life is perhaps the best example of what the album has to offer. Jelinek's trademark smears and washes occupy the midrange, like ghosted images of Joe Zawinul's electric piano floating quietly in the wind. DSP jazz modes are set against a walking bassline (possibly computer generated) and a gently tooted trumpet complete with Harmon mute, a dead ringer for Miles Davis' Prestige-era ballads. The effect is something like a three-dimensional film, with different realities on each layer, images of what jazz was manage to interact with a real-time demonstration of all it could be."
pitchfork, 2003

"Improvisations and Edits is a warm and mellow Ambient release with beautiful glitch fragments, static noise bursts and real trumpet intersections. However, there are times where it is the exact opposite, mainly effect-laden, overdriven and bouncy with a lack of melodies and focus, so be aware of these specific tracks."
ambientexotica, 2003

"Often deliciously dreamy and hazy, Improvisations and Edits is like listening to an exceptional instrumental jazz performance while half-conscious or under some sort of chemical influence. Computerised blips and bleeps, loops and treatments and murky sonic skips curl up around desolate horn notes and scattered instrumental noises that culminate in elegant music."
exclaim.ca, 2003

LTD Edition!

Made up of multi-instrumentalists and producers Simeon Jones and Nathanael Williams, their '2020' EP is a confident guide through future sounds and past histories from a time yet to come.

Created using analogue synths and acoustic instruments, the 4 track EP works as the score to a yet to be created animation. Nathanael's background is creating soundtracks for films, while Simeon plays with UK jazz prophets Yussef Kamaal and featured on Henry Wu's 'Negotiate' 12'.

Providing groove for the dancer and hidden meanings for the listener, '2020' is plugged in to the pulse of UK dancefloors and the resurgence of funk audiences. With their new Horizon EP, Lucien & The Kimono Orchestra open a music box which transports you in a blue and dawnish atmosphere, a morning spent on walking in an old cinematic Paris.

First step in the eighties, Connection starts as a film opening. Then arrives the single, Fresh Start, full of indelible voices and gimmicks. Horizon, sung in French, is a delicate reference to the French songwriting tradition inherited from Michel Berger, Alain Chamfort or Alain Souchon. To get some breath back between two songs, Georges, offers a strong instrumental interlude. Almost at the end, the English-spoken Shell extends the panel of influences with it's downtempo emotion. With its spontaneous declamations and slick guitar riff, Asile closes the journey, as the splendid climax of the foursome's second EP.

rRoxymore - Thoughts of an Introvert, Pt. 2

rRoxymore returns with the latest instalment in her Thoughts of an Introvert series. The first part, which hit stores in 2017, was born out of introspection and a yearning for solitude. Tracks like 'Prodrome,' which refers to symptoms indicating the early onset of an illness, seemed to reflect a global weariness, a head-nodding, late night search for comfort and respite. On part 2 though, a new energy is evident in the tracks.

'This Is Not What You Think' shrugs and fizzes with resilience, it feels like a maniacal, primal release from frustration and anguish. 'Run... Feet' finds an even more optimistic, upbeat bounce, not far from the stomping house euphoria of her first outing for DBA, Organ Smith, but with the newfound confidence of an artist who is pushing both technology and style to the outer limits. 'Mythical Technology', meanwhile, is a dancefloor-ready paean to techno's own futurist manifesto.

album in brand new mixing shape alongsides killer electronic remixes from the likes of Mawimbi signee Loya and Mr. Boom.
A rather eccentric and mysterious character from the Ouagadougou underground scene, Baba Commandant started out as a traditional Bobo dancer, before engaging in a rich musical career and joining Burkinabé star Victor Démé as one of his touring musicians. Influenced by the likes of Fela Kuti, King Sunny Adé and Moussa Doumbia, Baba Commandant plays dozo n'goni, an instrument associated with traditional Donso hunters, bridging the gaps between different generations and strata of Burkinabé society. Recorded at the notorious Ouaga Jungle Studios, "Wasso" is a prime example of the band's unpolished and raw sounds, merging Mandinka blues, dub and Nigerian afrobeat with a punk feel. The A-side also features a remix by Mawimbi signee Loya, whose leftfield reinterpretation moves at
a much higher pace with epic modular synth motifs and subtle organic layers of sounds. The B-side of the record is made of two DJ-friendly remixes with impressive mixing work from Toulouse-based producer Mr. Boom. Stripping the original track down to its most lively elements, both mixes are perfect club-ready weapons for tropical-minded and house DJs alike.

Monkey Safari - Watching The Stars Ep

now repressed !

No more just tracking down tracks! That has been the law at the Monaberry camp for a while now. It rings true with full force, as The Monkeys release their seminal and elegantly powerful "Watching The Stars" EP. The label's visionary search for real song quality and artist- wise grooves calls for another round leady by the brave bros and pros of Monkey Safari and their remixing
partners in crime. A: Watching the Stars (7:09) A wolf in
sheep's clothing... an easy chuckling groove that gets twisted throughout invites you to relax and keep it down. But soon the title track takes its toll. As the Monkeys effortlessly layer synths and organs in almost psychedelic manner, crowned by the manically sweet vocoder theme. Now they're talking and dreaming of a star where Woodstock seems nearer than Berghain. Universal love for the groove and vibe makes this a
proper night time anthem!

Steve Pepe - Danza Moderna

Steve Pepe's 'Danza Moderna' takes cues of all Manuel Cascone's musical experiences (from no wave to weird pop, from sound scores to abstract ethno music and even children music) and puts them "inside the big container called dance music trying to demolish some of its automatisms". The result is seven tracks that feel too alive to enclose them in a genre. Music that's playful and transcendental at the same time, with the kind of natural and effortless feel that's so hard to achieve. The path to it, indeed, wasn't an easy one. Cascone had always had the Steve Pepe project in mind. But, as he admits, the need of having a studio where to produce music full-time took him to "several disastrous solutions and a lot of logistic and legal problems". Having been a fixture of the underground scene of Rome since the mid-2000s, two years ago he finally found a proper space in the city's suburbs where he could develop his electronic music experiments. The starting point was to eliminate everything he considered overrated. The list included Ableton live, samplers, effects, drones, modular systems, loop stations and straight kicks. Synchronizing two drum machines and two synthesizers, the first incarnation of the project only existed as a live set. But when he decided to start recording, everything changed. In his own words, all of it "sounded weak and pointless". He then reconsidered things a bit. He expanded the tempo ranges and inserted tape echoes, added more melodic synth lines and a flute to finally found the sound he had been chasing. Does this mean he has succeeded Not really. In the end, and as he puts it, "the languages needed for sharing ideas necessarily rely on the rules of understanding". Maybe we should add that it's not necessary to understand something in order to enjoy it.

Till Von Sein - Precious (lp+cd)

Till Von Sein

Precious (lp+cd)

AZZLACKZ
20.05.2015

How did the myth surrounding the proverbial 'difficult second album' come about And who first started the rumour that you have a lifetime to finish the first album, but two years at most for the second It's likely that all these platitudes simply got churned out of the cliché machine at some stage, but the fact remains: They are out there and they sometimes make life tough for musicians.
But not for Till von Sein. He simply approached the dictatorship of the schedule with a shoulder shrug; stress rolled off him like water off a duck's back, and he released his second album a good three years after his début work #LTD.
But isn't Tilly the guy whose tour schedules barely leave any corner of the earth untouched That's right. In reality, those three years were compressed into a time frame during which other artists on the scene manage to put out a few EPs and remixes at most. More importantly, von Sein's Precious is not merely a follow-up, it's not just material for the next few years' worth of tours: von Sein has re-calibrated himself, re-assessed his approach to creating an album cycle. He summed up his approach to recording this release with unambiguous brevity: "I wanted the album to get to the point."
While its predecessor could be described as performing a loyal service to the functional aspects of House, the tracks on this album dance to the ever-changing tune of their author. Precious effortlessly does its name justice, forming a collection of interpretations of all the musical treasures that have left the deepest impression on von Sein as an artist. The album shifts between House, R'n'B and soul-inflected pop, stylishly connecting the most remote bpms and succeeding, where many others have failed, in combining dancefloor compatibility with a touch of songwriter inspiration and even airplayability.

Silicon Scally - Projections

Carl Finlow aka Silicon Scally, aka Random Factor amongst other aliases, released his first record on Warp in 1993. A prolific producer since then, he's delivered more than 100 releases including 11 albums on labels such as SCSI-AV, Soma and 2020 Vision. Now based in Toulouse, Finlow has showcased his extensive electro and house music performances in Japan, USA, Russia and Europe, including a stint at Sonar in Barcelona in 2000.

Finlow delivers a wide range of styles on this E.P. yet all can be neatly filed under what is arguably his strongest genre: electro. Projections and Thermal Image are laid back affairs reminiscent of LTJ Bukem's flavour of D&B, albeit played at 33rpm, then over to the tougher Miami-bass with Rift and Override. All executed with the precision, melody and craftsmanship he is known for.
