29.11.2013

The sophomore release from Ali Wells' new specialty imprint Submit, Feral Grind (SUBMIT002) collects tracks from a wide swath of producers who operate at the intersection of techno, drone and DIY electronics. Curated by Wells and music journalist Justin Farrar, the compilation features a balanced assortment of well-established innovators and under-the-radar sound explorers.

The names Pete Swanson, Prostitutes, Burial Hex, Profligate, Bleaching Agent, Hive Mind and Indignant Senility will certainly be familiar to those who keep abreast of the latest developments in cutting-edge electronic music. Over the last several years, these musicians have exerted considerable impact on everything from 'technoise' to 21st-century industrial. In the process, they've released music on labels as diverse as Spectrum Spools, Type, Diagonal, Not Not Fun, Digitalis, Opal Tapes and Wells' own Perc Trax.

Feral Grind also spotlights numerous artists not widely known outside of underground-noise circles. Their inclusion is proof of just how extensive and far-reaching the interface between techno and noise has become in recent years: Housefire, from North Carolina, unleashes a multi-layered din of crunchy distortion and shattered groove exploration. Going by the all too appropriate moniker Trogpite, Nick Painter vomits-up cough syrup-drenched horror lurch and caveman groans reminiscent of Dread-era Wolf Eyes. Speaking of which, Wolf Eyes' very own John Olson specializes in harsh-beat deconstruction under his alias Henry & Hazel Slaughter. Equally blown-out is the relentlessly pulsating work of Philadelphia's Mincemeat or Tenspeed. Then there's The David Russell Snake, whose whiplash-inducing productions are a direct reflection of the Cleveland musician's deep roots in harsh noise and power electronics.

Mia Dora, Hahaha & Raksha - Ill-defined

For our third release, we welcome back the collaborative efforts of our three family members Mia Dora, HaHaHa & Raksha. Joining forces once again, they depart from the awkward rhythms and stuttered arrangements of their first joint outing and instead offer up a slab of relentless, dance floor shattering techno. From the opening, an almost hypnotic drum pattern comprised of both live and synthesised sounds fills the track with atmosphere and instills a real sense of urgency in the listener. The moment the bassline is introduced, however, the purpose of Ill-defined becomes clear - to bring your warehouse party crashing to it's knees one drop at a time. On the flip, the ever adept Dam Mantle has take time to offer up what must be described as a re-edit in the truest sense of the word. Extending and re-imagining the track in his own unique way, he opens by somehow adding an extra sense of menace to the already unnerving original. As it grows, things move in a completely different direction and the final sexed up, key driven crescendo leaves you wondering how you got there in the end. DJ & radio support from BBC Radio 1, Kiss FM, Sinden, Sei A, Clouds, Jackmaster, Mary Anne Hobbs, Joe Goddard, Eats Everything, Dubbel Dutch, Toddla T, Tomb Crew, MJ Cole, Hannah Holland, Optimo, Sonic Router, Mash, All Caps, Greenmoney, Lone and more.

Massprod & Herva - Technology Fail As A Birth Control For Unnecessary Recordings

As a label manager a lot of music reaches you ears. Some you get especially attached to. This release is one of those. The two Italian producers Massprod and Herva (Bosconi, Delsin) has together produced some music that feels very unique and different. The EP that goes under the wonderful title Technology Fail as a Birth Control for Unnecessary Recordings, contains a set of songs that blend distorted funk, lo-fi tape recordings, noise and ultra minimal electronica. Titles like Mike vs Speak and Overdub as a Weapon Against Modern Laptop Wanking and Fourth Dimension Opens Up to Show Invisible Boogie Maze might even open up for new horizons for our label, the label with no set goals. We hope you like this one. We do.

Jason Potratz - Absent Centre

Jason Potratz's debut album 'Transfer', released on Phthalo Records in 2001, was a work of experimental acid
techno well ahead of its time. The release heralded much of the ensuing popularity of SH-101, MC-202, and TB-303-
inspired electronics. Over a decade later, just as it seems that acid is once again on the rise in electronic music
culture, the shadowy and mysterious Potratz returns on Halocyan with a killer single entitled 'Absent Center'. The
philosophical concept of the 'absent center' revolves around paralysis or evaporation through planning and thought.
In kind, this track is a forceful, paranoid rush of lacerating, rich and twitchy sound design-- all frenzied, furious
movement, exploding and collapsing inward upon itself. Potratz's expert programming and sound design are very
deliberate flirtations with ways of grounding the groundless in a techno framework. On the B-side, NHK RMX, aka
NHK / Kouhei Matsunaga (whose prolific and experimental body of work has been released on labels such as Pan,
Raster-Noton, and Mille Plateaux), whips 'Absent Center' into an absolutely relentless cyclone of whirring bleeps,
renegade high-hats and and a consistent, ingrained glitch. Cut by Stefan Betke (aka Pole) at 45 RPM for optimum
loudness, limited to 200 copies.

The long awaited return of Syncom Data on their own label. Four excellent spaced out, dubby techno-electro hybrid tracks. Titletrack Supercell takes a halftempo shufflebeat as a grooving foundation for a constant changing, vibrating and pulsating dub-techno excursion. The Supercell Dub takes the original into a more though techno direction in the best The Hague tradition. On the b-side Syncom Data start with Lullaby: a soothing melody, a shuffled beat and some deep bass kicks create a seemingly sweet electro-dubby song. Final track Cruise To Sunflower is a beatless deep space synth trip of more than 8 minutes. Great comeback of these Dutch masters of spacetechno.

Cari Lekebusch - Svett Ep

Sweat, also known as perspiration, transpiration or diaphoresis, is a product of mixing H2O with various solid chemicals such as chlorides and is mainly produced by glands located in the skin of mammals. It consists further of chemicals such as 2-methylphenol (o-cresol) and 4-methylphenol (p-cresol), as well as a small amount of urea. The sweat works as a thermoregulating mechanism, cooling the body from dangerous overheating, wich could result in body malfunction. It has also been reported that components inside the male perspiration would aslo work as a so called "chick-magnet". Sweat can be found in a wide variety of mammals, all though it is shown that only humans and horses produce large amounts of this chemical soup as a part of its cooling system and primarly by glands under the armpits.

Studies has shown that men start their perspiration faster than women when exercising under the same relative intensity. If this proves the theory that men use their sweat as a tool for luring women into their bedrooms is yet to be shown. Speaking against the theory, would be the fact that most sweaty men smells bad. When sweat occurs, the bacteria residing on the skin, feeds of the chemicals and as a biproduct, a smelly odor is produced. Keeping in mind that sweat also is produced during states of nervousness, it is implied that sweaty dancing men fearing an embarrasing defeat after a displaying their shortcommings as part of the mating rituals, still enjoys a better chance of intercourse if the target female is exposed to the sweat odor. No study showed if the same case stands true for homosexuals.

Samuel L Session: hard to pick a fav here, they are all good. bring it on!

Tony Rohr: Smutstvätt is slutty as fuck. It's like being at some tripped out carnival where all the booths are ran by the stuffed animals and you are trying to get that damn ring around the milk bottle so you can win a human. Me likey.

Patrick Bateman (Tic Tac Toe): Oh yeah, the Cari funk!... All 4 tracks got something special to them. Full support!

For our third release, we are joining forces with bristol stalwart - Kowton - finding the link between two genres that are very close to our hearts - grime & techno. Built as an ode to ruff sqwad's 'raw 2 da core', Kowton is able to build up and take down the rough and rugged aesthetic that is found within both genres in just over 5 minutes.

On the flip, taking on the original is Blawan and Pariahs collaborative project - Karenn (SheWorksTheLongNights). Keeping true to the spirit of UK techno, they manage to translate the raw and grimey quality of the original through a heap of analogue gear, all in one take.

Dubit & Scalameriya / Dadub - Instinct

Every place, in which the human being lives, imposes you to choose. We are continually bombed by voices that try to check us and more our mind digs in the depth of own heart, more we hear the necessity to go over the barriers that are built. This way we are and so we will stay. We walk in a crowd of voices and we are continually looking for a something that can maintain us hungry and rebellious against our bossy Ego.The instinct sometimes helps us and brings out. Human beings and the emotions belong to ourselves. We sometimes need the silence to really understand what we want and in which we obviously believe. Imagine you, as in a metaphor of the life, to find you in front of the choice among two doors: one left half open and the other wide open. From the left half open one a thread of light that emanates safety goes out, essential element for the human being. That wide open is dark, it transmits insecurity and not for this it arouses less curiosity. The curious man is the man of the myth of the cavern of Plato; man that puts in danger his own certainties to follow his own instinct and to seek that element new main point for his mental growth. This man will always choose the dark room and what he will find inside, it will always be distinguished according to the emotional state in which is found. The EP of Dubit and Scalameriya contains this meaning, music as metaphor of the life contained in the antithesis between safety and curiosity.Words by Lorenzo Salmi

Miles - Faint Hearted

Miles

Faint Hearted

12inchLOVE81LP
Modern Love
10.04.2013

Miles has been releasing material on Modern Love for a decade, first as one half of Pendle Coven, then on his own as MLZ, and eventually pairing up with Sean Canty to record as Demdike Stare. In between he's also pursued more experimental terrain under the Suum Cuique moniker, produced Jungle for the HATE project and (together with Andy Stott) taken on the occasional release as Millie & Andrea for Modern Love sublabel Daphne. He is also an admired, exhilarating DJ, his sets have been known to span a broad spectrum of electronic music, from the obscure UK techno of labels like Radioactive Lamb and Irdial, to classic Chicago House, Detroit Techno and - most importantly - early 90's jungle and breakbeat, feeding into his love of the most uncompromising end of the Italian experimental movement, Musique Concrète, Synthwave and contemporary Noise. After more than 10 years of producing, "Faint Hearted" is his debut solo album. 'Faint Hearted' is an exposition of Miles' love of electronic music in all its shapes, harnessing his fidgety production style into one expansive, restless set of tracks. The album opens with the filtered and looped Jungle mutation of 'Lebensform', through to the minimal, barely-noticeable bass-shifts of 'Irreligious', the classic Plastikman-infused looped ruffage of 'Status Narcissism' and the padded bliss of "Sense Data", coming across like a lost Move D production from the classic Studio Pankow era. The second half opens with 'Rejoice', a slowly-unfurling 4/4 variant that sounds like a more technofied and electric take on his work with Demdike Stare, while "Archaic Thought Pattern 1" invades a sequence of strings and bass notes with blasts of white noise, sounding like something off Aphex Twin's 'Donkey Rhubarb' EP rebuilt by Mika Vainio. The set ends with the evocative field- recorded sequence 'Queuing' and the ambient futurism of 'Loran Dreams', in some respects the straightest, most affecting 9 minute stretch yet from a producer who is seemingly unable to settle or stand still.
