Deben Bhattacharya - Music on the Desert Road LP

The late Deben Bhattacharya was a noted Bengali record producer, ethnomusicologist, poet, documentarian, radio producer, and all around renaissance man. Having moved from Northern India to London as a young man, Bhattacharya began working for the BBC as a radio producer. In 1955, having worked all possible angles to securing funding, Bhattacharya traveled to India to record musicians. The success of this trip allowed him to travel again soon after to the countries of the Middle East. With recordings from Turkey, Syria, Jordan, Iraq, Iran, and Afghanistan, as well as India and Pakistan, this LP is one of the best and earliest documents of the diverse and rich musical traditions of the Middle East. Subtitled 'A Sound Travelogue by Deben Bhattacharya', 'Music On The Desert Road' is exactly that, a beautiful and flowing document of the region's sound.

'Another Kind Of Revolution' describe the beauty of everyday
life and nature and promote the forces of change, not as a
burden but as the very source of hope to draw from.
'Another Kind Of Revolution' tells its stories through an
expansive sonic palette. Pianos and Wurlitzer take on various
timbres for each song, trickling in and out of the foreground
with Setién's distinguished voice gently gliding overtop. Careful
attention to specific recording techniques and allowing for the
slight imperfections in the instruments and amplifiers, bring a
depth to the recordings that is both direct and organic. Elena
Setién's work is elemental and bold. Her music bends simple,
familiar sounds and compositional forms into thoroughly unique

Guy from Southern California packs up his life and guitar to follow a Swedish exchange student back to her home land in 1967. It doesn't work out. He goes as far as he can with whatever funds he has left, guitar in hand. It's Holland.



Having never performed outside his bedroom, he plays coffee shops for tips. Spotted by a member of prominent Dutch band, BLUES DIMENSION who brings his label's A&R guy, he's asked it he wants to record an LP. He records a lush, baroque, orchestral pop sike album. It's released on a Decca in Holland. He appears on national TV and radio, along with supporting on a few tours.

With royalties earned on the album he returns to Southern California and heads to Hollywood with the imminent release scheduled on Decca Records in the USA. It doesn't happen. Not the plot of a new movie. This is the abridged story of the lost, barely known treasure that is MIKE TINGLEY The Abstract Prince.

'How much would you be willing to give' Fullbrook asks point-blank in first single 'How Much', ahead of woozily discordant strings and a stomping neopsychedelic

rhythm. The lyric brims with imagery of supermarket breakdowns, lilos, snarks and silos while an anthemic guitar hook soars throughout. Not

content to leave the song at a stable conclusion, a thumping 'I am the Walrus'- esque bass outro propels the track boomerang-style back to a space of adroit

experimentation. 'I've heard Olympic Girls, and I had to pick my jaw up off the floor', wrote Grant Smithies. 'Clustered around more introspective passages typical of

confessional singer-songwriters are gnarlier phrases that give her work its buzzy voltage: arresting visual images, weird associations, daisy-chains of telling detail.'

The Guitar Player was Davy Graham's first full length LP, after releasing his EP ¾ A.D. two years earlier. This unique album combines his interesting and virtuoso guitar play with some excellent arrangements. With his guitar style he contributed to the musical changes in the early 1960s, where blues, rock and folk started to play a more prominent role in the music scene. The man crosses into blues, jazz, folk, Arababic music and more, often in the same song. It's an essential album and one of the greatest instrumental acoustic guitar records released in the 1960's.

British guitar virtuoso Davy Graham inspired a multitude of artists such as Paul Simon, Jimmy Page and Jimi Hendrix. Combining different music genres, Graham proved to be one of the 20th century's most versatile guitarists and songwriters.

Blood, Sweat & Tears' fourth album B, S & T: 4 was written by different band members. The record peaked at number 10 on the Billboard Pop albums chart and two singles made their way into the Pop singles chart. The tracks are generally shorter compared to their previous albums. The band moved a little bit to the mainstream direction, offering some impressive performances. Their musical style is still a mix of rock, blues, jazz and folk. The warm atmosphere is recognizable and it's great from beginning to the piano led end, a charming, energetic and lively album.

In their almost 50-years of existence Blood, Sweat & Tears covered a lot of famous songs by James Taylor, The Band and The Rolling Stones, among others. They also incorporated different music from artists like Thelonious Monk and Sergei Prokofiev in their songs.

Quiet Signs is also Pratt's first album fully recorded in a professional studio setting, her songs and guitar arrangements have been pared back to include only what is essential, while the home recorded haze of previous efforts parts to reveal the full scope of her vision. On the first single, 'This Time Around', Pratt hits on a profound, late-night clarity over just a couple of deep chords, evoking Caetano Veloso's casual coastal brilliance.

Keep It Simple (2004) is the seventh studio album by blues artist Keb' Mo'. The album won a Grammy in 2005 for best contemporary blues album, and features Robben Ford, Robert Cray, Vince Gill a.o. Keb' Mo' crafted a warm, wry, blues-informed version of pop Americana that wrestles with contemporary problems like how to pay the mortgage, the high price of coffee, or how to afford a vacation.

Over the past two decades Keb' Mo' (born Kevin Moore) has cultivated a reputation as a modern master of American roots music through his live and studio performances. His songs have been recorded by the likes of B.B. King, Buddy Guy, the Dixie Chicks, Joe Cocker and Robert Palmer. His acting career began in the early '90s, and in 1998 Keb' Mo' portrayed Robert Johnson in the documentary Can't You Hear the Wind Howl.

The 15th anniversary edition is available as a limited edition of 1.500 copies on transparent blue vinyl.

Tommy Guerrero - Dub Tunes

Tommy Guerrero is a Legend. A true activist, a pioneer, since the early 80's he contributed to bring skateboard culture to today's global inspiration. He mixed both his passions, music and skateboard to write his unique story.

Ed Banger records' owner Pedro Winter who followed Guerrero's career since 1989 was dreaming of a collaboration with Tommy. He asked the multi task skater to dig into his cassette tapes and trip with his drum machines. A way to push the artist to produce some more repetitive and minimal tracks.

DUB TUNES is the result of the meeting of two open minded people driven by the passion of music and skateboarding. Tommy Guerrero offers 5 tracks to Ed Banger records. Mixing post-industrial noise, dub echoes and folky routines. TG signs a one of a kind record, full of human emotions mixed with computerized beats.

The American country rock band Poco formed in 1968 and released different charting songs during the '70s and '80s. In 50 years they recorded more than enough worthwhile material to bundle on 2LPs. The Poco Collected album features songs from different periods and includes some live recordings.

During their 50-years of existence Poco performed in various groupings and recorded over 20 studio albums. The band was formed following the demise of Buffalo Springfield in 1968, as seen in the name of their first album, Pickin' Up the Pieces. It was the start of long career, in which they recorded several charting singles, such as 'Rose of Cimarron', 'Crazy Love', 'Call It Love' and 'Heart of the Night'. Those singles are combined with the unknown gems and several fan favourites, to feature on the Collected 2LP.

Poco Collected is available as a limited first pressing of 1.500 individually numbered copies on gold vinyl.

Susan Christie - Paint A Lady

A mythical and misplaced masterpiece of lost soft rock and acidic folk funk by a one-hit wonderer lost in the wilderness for four decades. From the producer of Margo Guryan, writer behind Wool, Gerry Mulligan collaborator, Tarantino soundtracker and Wendy & Bonnie confidant, Paint A Lady now emerges from folkloric obscurity, to bring a wash of soft psychedelic colour to your vinyl collection and quench the repeat requests of a thirsty new found audience waiting for the rain.

Within certain record collecting circles, especially those who gather under the umbrella that covers fragile niches like 'acid folk' and 'soft rock', it's difficult to imagine a time when the legendary Susan Christie album didn't exist. When Finders Keepers Records first shared the unheard 60's songs like Paint A Lady, For The Love Of A Soldier and Echoes In Your Mind with a wide-eyed audience thirsty for organic soul and festival friendly acoustic funk, Susan's new found fan base instantly felt like they had known these songs all of their lives, and with a single needle drop we saw the birth of what could rightfully be described as an 'instant classic'. Which is why it's hard to believe that the music on this lost 60s acetate was only pressed 12 years ago. As our lucky seventh release in an international discography that now surpasses the 100 mark (and one of a small clutch of English language recordings on the label) Paint A Lady has slowly become one of our most requested re-releases, and with this 2018 edition it is technically accurate to say that this pressing is the first-ever reissue of this elusive and essential LP.

The oft over used term mythical applies to this album on many levels. Perhaps it's the woozy nostalgia found within the pop craft of Paint A Lady that has led to false rumours that original 1960's copies used to exist on the collectors market, or the bizarre claim that songs like the head-nodding title track, and the acid-drenched sound effects on Yesterday Where's My Mind were just a product of a contemporary studio band trying to create a fake folk funk red herring. As a result Susan Christie and her producer and husband of 40 years, John Hill have happily taken the repeat phrase 'unbelievable' as a compliment to their songwriting skills and foresight. In all fairness, with a decade to ponder, the original 1969 song titles alone do seem custom-built for the nostalgia market... No One Can Hear You Cry might lament the unrequited yearning for a record deal which never quite followed Susan's won one-hit wonder novelty hit I Love Onions; similarly When Love Comes might allude to the subsequent 35 year wait for the right label to eventually come along. Echoes In Your Mind and the aforementioned Yesterday... could easily allude to the haunting melodies that sat in the can on John Hill's studio shelf while his projects for Margo Guryan, Wool and Pacific Gas & Electric sat proudly in record racks before benefitting successful French cover versions or making their way on to Quentin Tarantino soundtracks. The track Paint A lady itself, complete with it's future-proofed sample-worthy rhythm section, seems like the perfect title for a mock rock pseudo psych contender - at which point you eventually step back and see the bigger picture. These guys were simply one drop too far ahead of their time; a family force of experimental pop perfection that late 60's America simply wasn't ready for. It is just over 12 years since champion record rustler Keith D'Arcy (who you'll meet on the inside sleeve) stumbled upon one of the original acetates that led to the final release of Paint A Lady, and it's almost a longer 50 years since Susan and John added their final touches to these recordings which tragically went into hibernation for over four decades.

Whether this album has been on your wish-list for what seems like a lifetime, or you are taking a plunge into this deep puddle for the first time, when the needle drops on the first track you'll find that Susan Christie, John Hill and Finders Keepers have been saving up for a very rainy day.

Tony Joe White was an influential musician in the '60s and '70s swamp rock scene. As one of the creators of this sound he recorded different hit songs, like 'Rainy Night In Georgia' and 'Polk Salad Annie'. The exclusive 2LP Collected title covers his music from the '60s until the '00s, including duets with different artists.

After Tony signed his first contract in 1967 he recorded multiple singles without success. In 1969 'Polk Salad Annie' charted in the U.S. , reaching number 8. He recorded multiple albums in the late '60s early '70s. As he became more popular other musicians started covering his songs, like Dusty Springfield's 'Willie and Laura Mae Jones' and Brook Benton's 'Rainy Night in Georgia'. Both songs charted in the cover versions and made him a well-known artist. During the '90s and '00s he recorded more albums and singles, including classics like 'Ain't Going Down This Time' and '(You're Gonna) Look Good In Blues'. All his hits, fan favorites and unknown gems are included on this fantastic 2LP album.

Linda Ronstadt released more than two dozen studio albums during a stellar career that has spanned more than five decades. Surprisingly, during all that time, the legendary singer never released a live album. That will finally change with an upcoming album that features amazing performances from a concert that Ronstadt recorded in 1980 for her acclaimed HBO television special.

Recorded on April 24, 1980 at Television Center Studios in Hollywood, the concert captures Ronstadt at the peak of her reign as America's most popular female rock singer. For LIVE IN HOLLYWOOD, Ronstadt selected 12 of her favorite performances from the original concert.

In concert, she was joined by an outstanding band that included guitarists Kenny Edwards and Danny Kortchmar, drummer Russ Kunkel, bassist Bob Glaub, keyboardist Billy Payne (of Little Feat fame), pedal steel guitarist Dan Dugmore, and backing vocalist Wendy Waldman. Rounding out the band was Peter Asher - Ronstadt's producer and the concert's executive producer - who played percussion and sang background.

After a 30-year career in Burkina Faso, Deme finally released his first album aged 46. In 2007, with the help of journalist David Commeillas and of Soundicate's activists, they founded the label Chapa Blues Records to promote Victor's

music. The singer started to work on his album in the small studio at the back of his artist residence in Ouagadougou, the capital of Burkina Faso. The studio is no more than two rooms separated by a truck windshield and equipped with

The Sensory Illusions - The Sensory Illusions

Scottish composer and multi-instrumentalist Bill Wells returns with The Sensory Illusions, the eponymous debut album from his duo with virtuoso tuba player Danielle Price. Featuring Wells on electric guitar, the album has all the warmth, melancholy and playfulness of his finest work, with timeless melodies that touch on jazz, pop, bossa nova, soundtracks, and folk.

'I've always liked the tuba,' says Wells, 'maybe it's because it's more like a voice. Also I think its potential is still rather underused.' Wells has used the instrument in several of his projects. Bassist Lindsay Cooper doubled up on tuba in his Octet, while 2011's Lemondale features the renowned Japanese tuba player Sekijima Takero.

In 2014, Wells was looking for tuba player to play on his second album with Aidan Moffat, The Most Important Place In The World. Price came recommended and subsequently joined their touring band. 'A couple of weeks later I discovered that she and I were neighbours!' Wells adds. As a result, they would occasionally get together to practice standards. The Sensory Illusions emerged after Wells secured a Glasgow support slot with Anna Meredith in April 2016. 'We had six weeks to get a set together so I used a batch of mainly recent tunes and it seemed to work well.' Wells notes that these tunes came to him in dreams, as did the band name. 'I dreamt I was in a record shop browsing through albums and I came across one by 'The Sensory Illusions'. I woke up thinking that the next band I form will have that name.'

And so it came to pass. 'In some ways it's a continuation of the more jazz - based line - ups such as the trio and the octet,' says Wells, 'but for me the focus is as much on the guitar playing as the writing. I'm interested in playing over standard type (chord) sequences but hopefully not sounding too much like a 'jazz guitarist', which is a bit of a challenge.'

While Wells is modest about his own guitar skills, he has nothing but praise for his musical partner. 'Danielle is one of the best musicians I've ever worked with. She's extremely versatile, from playing in trad jazz bands or with the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra, to playing with the likes of Ashley Paul, Mats Gustaffson and Ntshuks Bonga. She functions as both bass player and drummer in the Sensory Illusions, combing percussive sounds with melodic patterns/riffs.'

That rhythmic quality can be heard on tracks such as 'Tango', which she underpins with strutting riff, and 'Theme From Flint', where she transforms Jerry Goldsmith's lounge-jazz groove into a cantering brass figure. Yet the tuba is also the vehicle for some of Wells' loveliest melodies, from the wistful 'Brass Alley Dream' to closing track 'An August Ballad', which is suggestive of what might have happened had Brill Building's finest written for a Silver Band. As Wells puts it, 'It's an unlikely combination, but it works.'

Buck Owens - On The Bandstand

On The Bandstand was a top 10 charter in '64 for the honky-tonker, one of two concurrent top-selling albums he had that summer! The nascent Buckaroos magic is here in an early configuration featuring long-time Owens sideman Don Rich, turning in a solid selection of originals and tastefully-chosen covers. Pressed at RTI, on colored vinyl! Based around numbers he was performing in his live shows, On the Bandstand features a mix of self-penned songs and then-current country favorites. Besides Buck, the spotlight shines on individual band members throughout the album. Speaking of the band, they were mere months away from being named The Buckaroos, courtesy of Merle Haggard who served briefly as their bass player before moving on to his own solo career. The sole hit on the original version of the album was 'Kickin' Our Hearts Around,' a song written especially for Buck by Capitol Records label mate Wanda Jackson.

West Country folk-rock duo Sound Of The Sirens have announced their new album, This Time, out January 25th via DMF Records, as well as a 21-date UK tour starting in January.

This Time - the follow-up to their debut album, For All Our Sins, which was released in 2017 to widespread praise - continues to showcase an evident gift for crafting unique, vivid and enduring melodies over 15 heartfelt tracks.

''This Time' is a collection of moments, emotions, challenges and stories,' say the duo. 'We've collected lyrics, melodies and ideas from the past couple of years for this project. We created this album last winter in an isolated barn in Wales with only guitars, a piano, wine and the dogs for company. The themes of time, love, loss, perseverance, hope and clarity are intertwined in these songs.'

Electric & acoustic guitars, bass, drums, flute...Recommended if you like similar private psych-jazz obscurities like Elysian Spring.

Named after an old Detroit blues LP, Hasting's Street Opera was formed in Montclair, New Jersey by a group of young friends (Harry Wellott, Gordon Carlisle, Don Hathaway and Chris Nelson) influenced by blues, rock, jazz and the eclectic sounds emanating from freeform / underground FM radio stations: Blues Project, Butterfield Blues Band, Miles Davies, Pharaoh Sanders, Jethro Tull...

Initially born as a blues band, HSO eventually evolved into a true improvisation collective unit. 'Slippery When Wet' was recorded in 1969 at Don's house using a portable recorder operated by their math teacher, the famous old-time music preserver Charles Faurot. It was a vanity pressing of less than 100 copies, housed in hand-made covers which were distributed among friends and family.

For this, the first ever reissue, original band member and visual artist Gordon Carlisle has designed a new vintage styled cover based on old photos of the band.

Mandrake Paddle Steamer - Pandemonium Shadow Show

Previously unreleased recordings, 1968/1970, by British quintessential psychedelic / progressive band MANDRAKE PADDLE STEAMER / MANDRAKE, culled from the band's archive of reel tapes and acetates.

Pure late 60s UK psychedelic sound with early prog moves, plenty of Hammond and fuzzed out guitar, powerful vocals... Including such lost gems as the Barrett-Floyd sounding "The World Whistles By", killer psych-rockers like "Pandemonium Shadow Show" or "Doris The Piper", the mellotron fuelled "October Country" and more!

Unlike other 60s British bands who changed their music to 'psychedelic' or 'progressive' with the time, MPS were born "progressive" from day one. Formed in 1967 in Walthamstow (London) by a core of art school students, their members were Brian Engel, Martin Briley, Paula Riordan, Martin Hooker and Barry Nightingale (later replaced by David Potts).

During their short lifespan (1967-1970), MPS supported big names like Pink Floyd, The Nice or Vanilla Fudge. They played at the Isle Of Wight Festival, had a residence at the Star Club in Germany and ran their own club night (Asgard).

Signed to the Parlophone label (though the band was aiming to be part of the more progressive Harvest imprint) they released in 1969 the 'Strange Walking Man' 45, recorded at Abbey Road and now widely considered a lost British psychedelic classic (check Rubbles, Perfumed Garden, etc). Due to lack of promotion and interest from their record label, the 45 went nowhere. After some line-up changes and shortening their name to just Mandrake, the band definitively split in 1970.

'Pandemonium Shadow Show' collects studio recordings registered by Mandrake Paddle Steamer / Mandrake during 1968/1970 at various London studios such as Regent, Orange and other unknown locations. Some of these tracks had been previously included on several bootleg albums with inferior sound quality / wrong titles and others have remained unreleased until now.

Son Mieux is a collective formed around Dutch singer, songwriter & producer Camiel Meiresonne. Once the keyboard player in Soul Sister Dance Revolution and in his young years frontman of All Missing Pieces. After playing in bands since he was eleven years old, he is now a grown young man, ready to invite the world into his own. Son Mieux writes his songs in the after hours, which make his songs both intimate & alive. By combining folk, indie and electronic music, he manages to create a unique sound and to process the expressions of his personality in his music.

The past two years have been an accumulation of highlights for Son Mieux. Single 'Even' became 3FM Megahit, debut EP 'Vice Versa' (2016) was streamed more than 6 million times and the song 'Easy' was used under major advertising campaigns from ING, McDonalds and Deezer. The band toured the country with sold-out club shows, festivals such as Zwarte Cross and Where The Wild Things Are.

In 2017 and 2018 they took their time to write the debut album. With singles 'Hiding', 'Everyday' and 'Old Love', the debut album Faire de Son Mieux makes a more mature and fuller sound. Together with producer Thijs van der Klugt (Douwe Bob, Sue the Night), a deepening was sought without losing the characteristic Son Mieux sound.

Faire de Son Mieux is available as a limited first pressing of 500 individually numbered copies on white vinyl. The package includes 5 exclusive inserts with song lyrics and photos.

Andrew Wasylyk - The Paralian

Andrew Wasylyk is the alias of Scottish writer, producer and multi-instrumentalist, Andrew Mitchell.

In 2018, Andrew was extended a residency invite from arts centre and historic house, Hospitalfield, Arbroath, Scotland to create new music for their restored, 19th century, Erard Grecian harp.
During Wasylyk's five-month sojourn he created melodies and progressions echoing the building's unique relationship with the looming North Sea horizon. Using not only the harp, but the house's original grand piano, Andrew explored the Angus landscape and beyond, gathering field recordings on trips to neighbouring Seaton Cliffs and Bell Rock Lighthouse (the world's oldest surviving sea-washed lighthouse).
Winter slipped into spring, and harp-led compositions gave way to an ambitious third, full-length album, exploring a range of themes utilising a broad palette of instrumentation, including flugelhorn, euphonium, oboe, string trio, vintage synthesisers, drones and upright piano.

From the wandering, Bob James-esque, Fender Rhodes and shimmering strings in the study of coastal light, "(Welter) In The Haar", to the plaintive brass and farewell transmission blowing through, "Adrift Below A Constellation", punctuated by the fragility of Wasylyk's sole lead vocal of this collection - "The Paralian" (a dweller by the sea), is a conclusion embued with blue and golden melodies that land in a territory akin to experimentalists such as Robert Wyatt and Brian Eno. Through which, Wasylyk weaves the listener along a Modern-classical, Ambient and Jazz dream of Scotland's east coast.

Athens Of The North team were stunned by the luminous beauty and creativity at play in this work. Falling between genres and time, it stands next to 60s British Jazz, effortlessly blending notes of Library and soundtracks with dashes of British Folk.

Prins Emanuel - Diagonal Musik

The young virtuoso producer Prins Emanuel follows up his acclaimed debut album on Music For Dreams with something quite different than what we're used to hearing from him. While Arbete & Fritid was an epic odyssey into the furthest corners of disco with an array of studio wizardry and complex rhythms, Diagonal Musik is a sparse and delicate exploration of the acoustic guitar.

Steering away from his comfort zone, the Prins follows his intuition for experimentation and lands somewhere in a field of genre-defiant folk-jazz meditations; a development that fits like hand in glove for the eccentric nature of Music For Dreams.

The album reads like a soundtrack to the country house Emanuel shares with his family and friends, a place on the map called Oran. From atop a hillside overlooking a lake, Oran is lodged deep in the heart of the Skåne landscape, the southern part of Sweden that once belonged to Denmark. This place encompasses the whole of the album, as the track titles all pinpoint crucial locations on the courtyard and its surroundings. 'Orön' which opens the album is named after the small half-island that sits in the centre of the lake. There's the hand-built sauna ('Bastun') at the edge of the yard, and behind that in a slope the old root cellar ('Jordkällaren').

While the nature here is anything but balearic, the overwhelming calm of the country life seems to inspire the same laid back attitude and passion for all things organic (and not just musically, as this is where Emanuel also makes cider from local apples according to the vin naturel school).

Upon listening to Diagonal Musik one might be keen to draw references to works in similar style, such as the output of late 80's new age label Windham Hill or the dreamy lullabies of long-time friend and Music For Dreams affiliate 55 Cancri e. This is all circumstantial however, surprising as it may seem. While Prins Emanuel's previous output has showcased a versatile mixture of styles all relying on a multi-instrumentalist approach, the idea to limit his use to only one instrument for a concept album has been lingering on his mind for some time. The fact that the acoustic guitar is one of the most recognisable instruments in Western musical history will surely open up for a myriad of associations, but this has little to do with the methods behind this album.

Functioning as a kind of tabula rasa, Emanuel would only let the instrument itself act as his guide towards the outcome of these songs. The title of the album in turn refers to the quite avant garde method of composing he developed to lead the way forward. Instead of employing a traditional song structure, the diagonal approach would entail that if started at one point he would then go directly to the farthest point in the process. Something akin to drawing only shadows and then finishing with the contours.

Whether or not this experimental aspect of the album is a key factor to understanding and appreciating it is entirely up to the listener however. While it may be diagonal music, it is also just simply beautiful music.
