Adrianne Lenker - Hours Were The Birds

With the release of breakthrough albums Masterpiece and Capacity, Big Thief's Adrianne Lenker has established hers as one of the most powerful voices in music. As Consequence of Sound describes it, "Thanks to the swift ascent of Big Thief, singer-songwriter Adrianne Lenker has become one of the most praised indie folk artists of the last five years.'

While her output with Big Thief is what brought her music to the attention of most who hold her in such high regard, Masterpiece is not the beginning of the story. "My first solo record I made was Hours Were the Birds,' Lenker explains. 'I moved to New York and, starting from complete scratch, had nothing to show anybody that was representing what I did, other than stuff I made when I was 13. So, I decided I should record a solo album of my songs that I had been accumulating.'

In 2013 Lenker returned to her hometown of Minneapolis and entered Terrarium Studios with producer Rob Oesterlin, where she laid down ten songs on acoustic guitar. 'It's basically just like a live solo show,' Lenker describes, 'but with an added twist.' She then enlisted NYC friend Andrew Sarlo to mix the album (he would later produce and mix Masterpiece and engineer, produce and mix Capacity), and on January 24, 2014 Hours Were the Birds was released into the world.

Adrianne Lenker & Buck Meek - A Sides and B Sides

The summer after graduating from Berklee College of Music, Adrianne Lenker moved to New York City. She met Buck Meek the day she moved there, at a corner market called Mr. Kiwi (although, technically they had already played a show together in Boston, so they recognized each other but weren't sure from where). The two explored the city by bicycle and eventually began to play songs together. "It was one of those friendships that developed extremely fast where suddenly you're each other's best friend," Lenker says. "We hung out every day from the moment we met.'

Meek's off-kilter, piercing guitar licks and solos are the perfect juxtaposition to bring Lenker's melodic and stirring vocals and lyrics to fruition. "I guess what struck me as a songwriter then was that her songs all seemed to be really human, and really emotional, and really honest — vulnerable — but at the same time they all somehow had this ineffable quality," Meek says. "Like, all of that human content was serving as a medium for something beyond.'

Soon they picked up a white conversion van, named her Bonnie, and made touring their whole lives. In 2014, songs crafted on the road were captured on two EPs released under the Buck and Anne moniker: one called a-sides and one called b-sides. Both warm, acoustic affairs.

In the ensuing years, Adrianne and Buck joined with Max Oleartchik and James Krivchenia to form Big Thief, one of the most beloved bands in music today. a-sides and b-sides provide an early glimpse at what was soon to come, while standing on their own as documents of a deeply meaningful time in the creative lives of Lenker and Meek.

Omnivore Recordings, in association with the group's living founding members Dewey Bunnell and Gerry Beckley, is proud to announce the release of Highlights From Heritage: Home Recordings/Demos 1970-1973, the LP version of last year's highly acclaimed release on CD. Highlights From Heritage: Home Recordings/Home Demos 1970-1973 offers an up close and personal portrait of a band primed for stardom, creating classic songs that would still resonate almost 50 years later—on vinyl—as nature intended!

Yama Warashi - Boiled Moon

  • 3: Kofun No Uta
  • 4: Jyomondoki Doki
  • 5: Loon Of The Cups
  • 6: Set Fire To The Village
  • 7: Find And Lost Cuckoo
  • 8: Sole Wa Alu

Yama Warashi is the vision of Yoshino Shigihara, a Japanese musician and visual artist whose past projects include cult favourites Zun Zun Egui (Bella Union), of which she was a co-founder. Inspired by Japanese folk dance, free jazz and tribal African music, and heavily saturated in psychedelia, Yama Warashi's songs are lyrically outlandish and charming, melodically addictive and mythical; the band name translates from Shigihara's native tongue as 'small childlike mountain spirit'
The new material is set to build on the success of Yama Warashi's 2016 debut album, 'Moon Egg', which won an eager fanbase and picked up high profile press and radio plaudits. Live, they have graced festival stages including Latitude, Green Man, WOMAD and Shambala, to add to support with the likes of Flamingods, This is the Kit and Dakha Brakha. Following another busy summer of festivals and headline shows, they will be embarking on a full album tour around the release in November 2018.
Originally from Ashiya city, near Osaka, multi-instrumentalist Yoshino Shigihara discovered her love of playing piano aged three, kicking off a lifelong musical curiosity. After a period of exploring other artistic avenues, she picked up the piano again on moving to Bristol and finding herself brimming once again with inspiration. Following the success of their early releases, in 2017 Yama Warashi were awarded funding from the PRS Foundation, and they recorded their new album with Ali Chant (PJ Harvey, M.Ward, Perfume Genius) at The Playpen in Bristol; they have hit upon a truly unique and impactful sound that sees Shigihara taking major leaps in compositional complexity, songwriting and artistic freedom, backed by an impressive and close-knit ensemble of talent.

Madeline Kenney - Perfect Shapes

Produced by Jenn Wasner of Wye Oak. LP is on coloured coke bottle green vinyl + inclues download code and 12x12' lyric sheet/ liner note insert.

Madeline will be on tour throughout the UK and Europe this Autumn.

'Building from understated beauty to dense guitar theatrics. It reminds me of Chicago circa '93 as remembered in a dream — a little bit of Liz Phair 'Exile In Guyville' - rendered in soft-focus with the graceful confidence of a young master. ' STEREOGUM

In January of 2018, five months after the release of her debut album Night Night at the First Landing, Madeline Kenney traveled from Oakland, California to the woods outside of Durham, North Carolina to record her sophomore album with a new collaborator, Wye Oak's Jenn Wasner.

The choice was a conscious decision to explore new methodology in writing, recording, production and even genre. Perfect Shapes sees Kenney leaping headfirst into fresh and adventurous territory, largely eschewing conventional rock structures in favor of theme and melody. Its ten songs are full of surprises big and small - from vibrant synth lines to taut bass figures and subtly modulated vocals - that instead of feeling fussed over, reveal Kenney's penchant for elegant and abstract composition.

Kenney's 2017 debut, Night Night at the First Landing, was a guitar-centric rock album, produced by friend and collaborator Chaz Bear of Toro Y Moi, Perfect Shapes leans on the foundational pieces of Night Night - fuzzed-out guitar tones, coy wordplay and Kenney's notably strong voice - but with an unconventional approach that allows them to bloom, reincarnated. Perfect Shapes marks Wasner's first foray into producing another artist's work and is permeated by the pair's collaborative spirit. Both Wasner and Kenney play multiple instruments on the record, and engineered the session alongside Kenney's touring percussionist, Camille Lewis.

An eagerness to explore and experiment is apparent from start to finish, as Kenney and Wasner weave endless sonic curve balls into the arrangements. From the delightfully warped percussion on opening track 'Overhead' to the burbling synths on the R&B-tinted 'The Flavor of the Fruit Tree' and the left-field trumpet solo in 'Your Art,' these rich and inventive ideas echo Yo La Tengo's everything-but-the-kitchen-sink mentality, as well as the surging soundscapes of Tame Impala and Wye Oak at their most impressionistic. Lead single "Cut Me Off" is a surprise of its own - the most pop-forward song Kenney has written yet. 'Bad Idea,' finds her balancing fragility as foil; later, 'I Went Home' manages to evoke both frustration and affection in a single breath.

The complex and open-ended questions that lay at the core of Perfect Shapes mark Kenney's arrival into a hard-hitting reflective space: How do you love another when it hurts to do so What is the physical limit to which one can carry the emotions of others How does a modern female artist reckon with the expectations demanded of her femininity Yet for all the notes of doubt and fear that Kenney raises, she delivers each song with confidence and poise, grounded by the pointedly laid and surging soundscape.

Kenney has always had a penchant for curiosity and experimentation. Raised in the Pacific Northwest, she began studying classical piano and dance in kindergarten, and grew to believe her future lay in modern dance choreography. Not one to be tied to a singular pursuit, however, Kenney took a hard left in college, studying Interpersonal Neurobiology and supporting herself with a career in baking. Music remained a constant however, and after moving to the Bay Area in 2013, Kenney quickly found footing in the supportive arts community in Oakland. There, she met and began collaborating with Chaz Bear (Toro Y Moi), which led to the production of her Signals EP and later her debut album, Night Night at the First Landing. Both releases were received with great critical acclaim, and saw Kenney exploring the sounds within her self-proclaimed twang-haze genre, defined by cathartic fuzz breakdowns and lyrical sensitivity.

  • 5: ) Everything You Need
  • 6: ) All In Good Time

  • 9: ) I Could Break You
  • 10: ) The First Or The Last

Three years since their last album, following the birth of their son, and over a decade since the release of their debut as the song writing partnership behind hotly-tipped southeast London indie-folk pioneers Indigo Moss, the duo have produced yet another beautifully crafted and delicately delivered gem that will delight fans old and new.

The duo, now residents of Hastings, have earned a reputation for doing things slightly differently over the years. Having toured in tin tabernacle churches, village halls, workingman's clubs and by canal boat, not to mention quitting a buzz band on the brink of stardom, they chose a different route entirely. Leaving the bright lights of London behind them in favour of a more DIY approach away from the city, Fair Lady London reflects both a change in environment and mentality.

Likewise, the recording is anything but simple. When we say 'studio album' it couldn't be that straightforward. Having worked with legendary producer Ethan Johns on their last outing Expatriot (2015) Fair Lady London sees them return to the Tascam 246 4-track cassette recorder on which they recorded their 2012 offering La Ferme De Fontenaille in a barn in the Loire, however this time finding a quiet corner of a castle in the rolling valleys of East Sussex.

Former members of Danny And The Champions of the World, the album sees them joining forces with Danny George Wilson once again, signing to his and Del Day's Maiden Voyage Recording Co. label. This follows album releases on such distinctive labels as Heavenly and Loose.

Fair Lady London marks the latest chapter in the journey of two of the UK's brightest stars. 'We always said we'd do five albums as a duo, like Simon and Garfunkel'. laughs Hannah-Lou. 'Maybe this is the last one, but we always say that.'

California based group Fanna-Fi-Allah have been touring their particular strain of Qawwali (Sufi praise music) for the past 17 years. Despite being well known in Pakistan, up to now they have preferred to self-release their own CDs and sell them at gigs. This - their first officially distributed album - was recorded in the Malibu studio of Chris Martin (Coldplay - but don't hold it against them) and manages to capture the intensity and rhythmic complexity of their live performances.

The Passengers - All Through The Night/New Life

vailable on 7-inch red vinyl single (includes free digital copy on MP3). Vinyl is limited to 500 copies.

Les Disques du Crepuscule presents All Through the Night, the first of two of newly recorded 7-inch coloured vinyl singles by The Passengers, the late 1970s new wave group from Brussels who subsequently became cult Factory/Crepuscule band The Names.

In 1978, with the Brussels scene still in the grip of raw punk, The Passengers offered a fresh, pop-oriented sensibility, mingled with the darker accents of later post-punk. This was young music in every sense, with none of The Passengers older than 22, shaped more by American than British influences, notably the Velvet Underground, whose radical style was in turn echoed by late Seventies bands like Richard Hell and the Voidoids, Talking Heads and Television. The presence of Isabelle Hanrez on vocals also made comparisons with Blondie inescapable.

With their first gigs in the five-piece quickly became a local sensation, and in March 1978 won a battle of the bands known as the 'First Belgian Punk Contest' - only to reject the prize (a one-off single deal) as a cynical commercial ploy. Instead, the band chose to tape All Through the Night for Brussels punk imprint Romantik Records, only for the label to fold before this came to pass.

The Passengers parted company soon after, with Michel Sordinia, Marc Deprez and Christophe Den Tandt becoming The Names on Factory Records, while Hanrez formed own pop-punk outfit, Isabelle et les Nic-Nacs. Four decades on, the original Passengers quintet decided to record and issue the singles denied a release at the time, recorded and played as if it were still 1978!

algerischen Raï-Sänger Faudel, Nouvelle Vague und dem Elektro-Futuristen Smadj kooperierte. "Sway"

Vasco Martins - Universo Da Ilha

Super deep African / New Age / Minimalistic / Ambient crossover from Cabo Verde - Not the typical record, a beautiful listening experience - Check !!
.
Originally conceived as a book of 6 poems that developed into a record released independently in 1986, Universo Da Ilha sits at the cross-section of many different genres. Connecting contemporary New Age and ambient minimalist movements with traditional West African and Cape Verdean elements from the past (griot voices, djembe rhythms, melancholic morna), Vasco constructed his own 'universe' where, in spite of the isolation of the island at the time, he transcended barriers and created a global record that was ahead of its time

Vasco used his own synths and drum machines, and with the help of a small group of friends (Tey Gonçalves on percussion, Neney's amazing griot voice, Luis Morais on sax and flute), he recorded this Not-Balearic-but-Atlantic Ambient odyssey on a 16-channel Peavey mixer directly to an Akai tape recorder without overdubs.

Steiner & Madlaina - Cheers

Steiner&Madlaina

Cheers

Glitterhouse
19.10.2018

1. Ich werde nie gehen
2. Prost Hawaii
3. Wenn du mir glaubst
4. Hold
5. Riot
6. Das schöne Leben
7. Reckless love
8. Groß geträumt
9. Wait for it
10. Herz vorus id Wand

Sharron Kraus / Belbury Poly - OTHER VOICES 10

The final single in a series featuring regular Ghost Box artists, special guests and one-off projects. This time our guest artist is folk singer, Sharron Kraus with a remix by Belbury Poly on the B side.

'Something Out of Nothing' is a beautifully simple yet profound baroque pop folk song. Kraus sings, plays guitar and synth and is ably assisted by a studio band comprising: Jenny Bliss Bennett on Viola de Gamba & Fiddle, Nick Jonah Davis on Slide Guitar, Neal Heppleston on Bass, Oliver Parfitt on Synths, Nancy Wallace on Backing Vocals and Guy Whittaker on Drums.

Sharron Kraus is a singer of folk songs, a songwriter and multi-instrumentalist whose solo work and collaborations offer a dark and subversive take on traditional music. As well as drawing on the folk traditions of England and Appalachia, her music is influenced by gothic literature, surrealism, myth and magick.

In addition to eight solo albums, Kraus has recorded an album of traditional songs 'Leaves From Off The Tree' with Meg Baird and Helena Espvall (Espers, Beautify Junkyards) written an album of songs to celebrate the seasons of the year, 'Right Wantonly A-Mumming', which was recorded with some of England's finest traditional folk singers including Jon Boden, Fay Hield and Ian Giles. She has also recorded and performed with Ex Reverie's Gillian Chadwick as Rusalnaia, with Tara Burke (Fursaxa) as Tau Emerald and with Irish free-folk collective United Bible Studies.

Jim Jupp, co-founder of the Ghost Box label, records as Belbury Poly. His melodic, folk inflected electronica references 70s library music & TV soundtracks. It's music that's both light and weirdly unsettling.

Robert Coyne - Out Of Your Tree

While mystical repetition is common to 'Out of Your Tree' and the Liebezeit trilogy, the new album's rhythm is more meditative, sometimes otherworldly. Added to the still sparse drums and acoustic guitar instrumentation are flashes of lead guitar, keyboards and bass, often coloured with tape echo and reverb evoking '50s Doo-Wop and New York avant punks Suicide - both among Coyne's primary influences. The distinctive drumming of longtime friend and collaborator Werner Steinhauser - formerly the longest serving musical partner of Kevin Coyne, Robert's father - adds further musical and emotional continuity, as do the vocals of Robert's wife Wendy, the only other musician on the album.

Anna St. Louis - If Only There Was A River

If Only There Was A River is the first full-length studio album from Anna St. Louis. The songwriter, who originally hails from Kansas City, began writing songs after moving to Los Angeles five years ago and has previously released a cassette of recordings on Woodsist / Mare Records, appropriately titled First Songs. The tape received notice from NPR: All Songs Considered, Pitchfork, and Stereogum.

On her proper debut, St. Louis spreads her wings and expands on the promise hinted at on First Songs. To achieve that end, she enlisted Kyle Thomas (King Tuff) and Kevin Morby to produce the album, which was engineered by Thomas in his home in Mount Washington, LA. The collection of eleven songs also features Justin Sullivan (Night Shop) on drums and multi-instrumentalist Oliver Hill (Pavo Pavo). While hints of influences like Loretta Lynn, John Fahey and Townes Van Zandt peek out of the corners of the songs, this album is not a nostalgic affair. Rather it marks the emergence of an artist fully coming into their own.

'Being from the Midwest means a certain tone is woven into ones' fabric. And every now and then, someone comes along who has the power to convey that feeling in their cadence alone. And so all hail Anna St Louis, who lets us into her world of heartache, wonder and a never-ending, never-beginning dance with time. Her album is for the mystics, reminding us that the world is full of magic at every turn, if only we let ourselves see it. Sometimes just by stating a simple observation, St. Louis lets us in on an infinite truth that perhaps we wouldn't have seen otherwise. To step into the world of Anna St. Louis is to step into a world where the heart leads straight to the soul and where everything is cloaked in beautiful mystery. If Only There Was A River is a record of longing—of a soul reaching for more.' - Kevin Morby

Brigitte Fontaine & Areski Belkacem - Vous et Nous

Art is a matter of different phases and influence. The artists' core reaches out like heat waves. And very rarely do these artists' core merge like Brigitte Fontaine and Arseki Belkacem have. Their Saravah Era lasted ten years (1969 to 1979), ten years of "folle sagesse" (crazy wisdom), above all genres and song limitation.

"Le plaisir secret que donne une chanson, dessin à la craie sur le mur de tes sons" (the personal delight within song, a chalk drawing on your wall of sounds) whispers Areski, right after Brigitte's voice on the penultimate song of the double album "Vous et nous". Released in 1977, this free flowing record contains 33 songs, it's their 6th album after "Comme à la radio", "Brigitte 4", "Je ne connais pas cet homme", "L'incendie" and "Le bonheur", and it continues to spread the wide and generous spectrum of the couple fully blossoming talent. Electronic experiments, North African trance, refined acoustics and medieval drones gracefully blend with the acid and candid tongues of the singers, surprising us each step along the way. The making of this record was also full of twists and turns. It started out as a solo effort by Areski at Jean-Pierre Chambard's studio. Little by little, as Areski was filling tapes with poems and improvised skits, Brigitte would sneak into the studio at nightfall, adding her voice here and there, her whispers then became screams, giving fuel to the fire in a total blaze, a surreal blaze. The solitary work ("je") thrived to become us ("nous") and you ("vous") ...

This Reissue Marks The 10th Anniversary Of The Release Of Their Seminal Self Titled Album. This Special Re-issue Includes Two Never-before-heard Outtakes From The Self Titled Recording Sessions: Baltimore, And Watersider...included On A 7' With The Lp (180g) , And As Bonus Tracks On Cd.

Cherished By Fans And Critics Alike, This Fifteen Track Opus By The Catskill Mountain Based Band Of Brothers Boasts Classics Like Frankie's Gun, Wonderful Life, Whisky In My Whisky And Don't Wake The Scarecrow, And Remains One Of The Most Influential Works Of This Century's Indie-folk-rock Revival.

Hailing From Upstate New York's Catskills Mountains, The Felice Brothers Look Like Their Entire Approach Was Based On Staring Long And Hard At The Band's Second Album Cover: Beards, White Shirts, Hats And Ill-fitting Suits. The Comparisons To Big Pink/basement-era Dylan Are Also Inevitable.

Yet This Second Album Proper From The Three Siblings And Their Bass Player Christmas (an Ex-travelling Dice Player, Apparently) Is So Chock Full Of Whiskey-soaked, Ramshackle Bonhomie That It'd Be A Hard-hearted Music Critic Indeed Who Didn't Succumb To The Charms Contained Therein. The Group Have Somehow Taken Americana And Wrung Out Some More Good Times. It's Time To Visit The Bar Again...

With Most Of The Numbers Croaked Out By Brother Ian, Whose Vocal Chords Draw Most Of The Zimmerman Comparisons, This Is A Collection Of Songs That Are Equal Parts Travelogue, Shaggy Dog Story, Drunken Lament And Filched Traditional Fare. They're All Captured In Gloriously Scratchy Lo-fi (complete With Ambient Chat, Phone Conversations And Other Audio Verite) As Befits A Band Whose Last Recordings Were Supposedly Completed In A Chicken Coup On A Two-track.
Like Dylan, Their Self-mythologising Puts Them Not In The Modern Age, But Somewhere In The Early Part Of The Last Century. Jaunty, Piano-led Ballads Like Greatest Show On Earth Or Take This Bread Are Lifted By Parping Brass And Rollicking Choruses, Like A Night Out In A Riverfront Bar, Filled With Unfaithful Women And Gun-toting Men (guns Are Mentioned In Just About Every Song) Bent On Drunken Revenge. Elsewhere The Waltz Time Of Ruby Mae Approaches A Tom Waits-like Pathos. Whiskey In My Whiskey Sounds Like A Murder Ballad That's Centuries Old.
Yet All These Tales Are Shot Through With A Red-eyed Humour That Sounds As Authentic As Their Beards. This Is How They Manage To Convince The Listener. Frankie's Gun! With It's Truck Driving Narrative And Wheezing Accordion Is Particularly Hilarious. Rather Than Some Studious Authenticity, They Sound Like They're Just Having A Good Time. And That's Just About The Only Recommendation You Need To Seek Out This Fine Album...
