Hildur Gudnadóttir reunites with director Todd Phillips for the score to Joker: Folie à Deux, following their acclaimed work on 2019's Joker, which earned Gudnadóttir an Academy Award, GRAMMY, BAFTA and Golden Globe. Phillips describes her music as 'basically the second biggest character in the first film', and her return was never in question.

For Folie à Deux, Gudnadóttir pushed her sonic language further, inventing a new instrument to reflect Arthur's internal split. Inspired by his mental confinement, she worked with Icelandic builders to create a 'string prison' - long strings stretched through space and played with a trench cello - to evoke both euphoria and claustrophobia.

'Promare' is from the production company Trigger, who have also produced 'Kill La Kill' and 'Little Witch Academia'. Young Japanese composer Hiroyuki Sawano scores the film - his previous works include 'Attack On Titan' (series with millions of streams on Spotify). The soundtrack is a mix of high energy instrumental music and pop songs sung in Japanese and English. We've got a bit of an obsession with Hozan Yamamoto here at Mr Bongo! A legend of Japanese jazz, he is rightly regarded as a true master and was recognised as a "living national treasure" by the Japanese government in 2002. Over five decades he pushed the genre into new directions, absorbing fusion, funk, spiritual jazz and many other sounds, resulting in a discography studded with gems of rare beauty. Exploring his back catalogue has taken us on an engrossing journey that now sees us reissuing another work from this ground-breaking musician.

Though not translating perfectly into English 'Akuma Ga Kitarite Fue Wo Fuku', (kitarite has not been a modern expression in Japanese) roughly means 'The Devil Comes Playing The Flute' / 'The Devil Is Coming While Blowing The Whistle' or 'Devils Flute’. It is the original soundtrack to Kôsei Saitô’s 1979 mystery and suspense movie, ‘Devil’s Flute’. The film is based on a story by the famous author, Seishi Yokomizo, and is centred around a much-loved fictional Japanese detective, Kosuke Kindaichi. A Japanese Sherlock Holmes that has been popular for generations.

Hozan Yamamoto was invited to compose the soundtrack directly by the producer of the film, Haruki Kadokawa. Mr Kadokawa also hired keyboard player and producer Yu Imai as assistant producer on the project, resulting in a stunning cosmic, breaks and beats-laden, funk, disco soundtrack extravaganza.

When it comes to the soundtrack and the technology of the time, Hozan Yamamoto and Yu Imai got inventive, tripped out, funked up, and experimented, creating a quirky soundtrack masterpiece that needed to be heard more outside of Japan. Differing from the more traditional Japanese music orientation of some of his other albums such as 'Beautiful Bamboo-Flute' (also released on Mr Bongo) the album showcases a number of genres, from lush atmospheric incidental music to disco and funk grooves, experimental nuggets, drum and flute workouts, to neo-classical and more.

The Vasulka Effect is a documentary portraying the life and work of pioneers of video art Steina and Woody Vasulka. Their history with video dates back to the late 60’s when they lived and worked in New York. Some have called them the grandparents of the “YouTube generation”, others: “grandparents of video art”, seem forgotten by the art world. Through a series of impromptu sessions, Bergur Þórisson and Pétur Jónsson, the multi-instrumentalists responsible for the rich and dreamy sounds of Hugar, recorded and released their independent self-titled debut in 2014. The sweepingly multi-layered and ethereally ambient album quickly amassed an organic following of listeners and has since racked up over 30 million streams worldwide on Spotify alone. In addition to their new album Hugar have composed a score for the Islandic film The Vasulka Effect, premiering at Nordisk Panorama Film Festival 21 Sept 2020.

I started to learn the piano in my childhood, and that was the beginning of my interest in composing. The first time I heard the sound of a drum machine I was overcome with intense emotions. It was from this moment that I became interested in dance music. The first time I heard the Chemical Brothers’ album ‘Exit Planet Dust’ I experienced the feeling of pure bliss, my mind had been awoken. I got into their music and I was very interested in Techno. I started to make dance music as ‘metalmouse’ with Yukitoshi Kihana.

In Feb 2006, My first record was released from ‘Federation Of Drums’ that is a Techno label owned by W.J.Henze who is one of the greatest techno composers from Germany. After that, I released 4 techno vinyl and I was glad to hear that my track was playing at a radio show hosted by Ben Sims(Techno Artist), and my body was filled with satisfaction. There was an offer to compose from Cyndi Lauper, it made me intensely excited, however, it didn’t realize. As metalmouse, there are 2 albums, 5 EPs and 2 singles. Also, there are a lot of remix work for Genki Rockets, Steve Aoki, Dragonette, and others.
