Yo-Yo Ma Plays Ennio Morricone is a 2004 album of recordings from Morricone's various film scores by brilliant cellist Yo-Yo Ma and Ennio Morricone. The album was recorded with the Roma Sinfonietta Orchestra and Gilda Buttà on piano. Morricone functioned as orchestrator, conductor and producer. The album stayed 105 weeks on the Billboard Top Classical Albums.

Yo-Yo Ma Plays Ennio Morricone positively diverges from most of the other interpretation albums in its collaborative aspect: the music's original creator, Morricone, had as much to do with this album as did Ma and his creative team.

Perhaps no other composer of this era can claim to have reached a wider audience than Henry Mancini. During his long career he scored the music for hundreds of films and won 20 Grammy
awards. It is all too easy to remember him simply for Breakfast At Tiffany's and the Pink Panther theme, this film score triumphantly proves he was much more than that.

When it came out in 1961, Martin Ritt's film Paris Blues was hailed as one of the best movies about jazz ever released. Nino Rota's soundtrack for Federico Fellini's Giulietta Degli Spiriti is full of circus music, not unlike Otto E Mezzo [MOVATM009]. The main theme 'Amore Per Tutti' particularly oozes of cotton candy and carnival grounds; three-ring madness is made explicit with marching band extravaganzas like 'La Ballerina Del Circo Snap.'

Nino Rota personalizes all this with abrupt stylistic changes, sinister organ runs, and ethereal vocal passages. He even gives the main theme a few dark, expressionistic spins on watery gems like 'Il Giardino Delle Fate' while creating an especially effective pastiche of both existential and circus moods on 'La Porticina Segreta.'

Further expanding the mix, Rota also includes some Tin Pan Alley, rock & roll, and cocktail jazz, elements that seem to pop up on most of his Fellini projects. And thanks to Rota's seamless arrangements and keen song sequencing, the musical mélange comes out whole. A perfect introduction to Rota's work.

Memoirs of a Geisha (2005) is the award winning drama film adaptation of the novel of the same name, produced by (a.o.) Steven Spielberg's Amblin Entertainment. Directed by Rob Marshall, the film stars Zhang Ziyi and Ken Watanabe, amongst others. The story revolves around a young girl who is sold by her family to an okiya, a geisha house. Her new family then sends her off to school to become a geisha. The story focuses on her struggle as a geisha to find love, while in the process making a lot of enemies.

The film was nominated for and won numerous awards, including nominations for six Academy Awards, and eventually won three: Best Cinematography, Best Art Direction and Best Costume Design.

The original score and songs were composed and conducted by John Williams (the Star Wars & Indiana Jones trilogies, Jaws, Close Encounters of the Third Kind, and many more. The album won the Golden Globe Award for Best Original Score, BAFTA Award for Best Film Music and the Grammy Award for Best Score Soundtrack for Visual Media. It was also nominated for the Academy Award for Best Original Score.

Rocky IV is the original motion picture soundtrack to the movie of the same name. It was originally released in 1985.

The soundtrack was successful on the strength of two top-five singles, "Burning Heart", and "Living In America" by James Brown. "Living In America" showed the decadence, extravagance, and sheer bloated pompousness of the 80's. The top-40 hit "No Easy Way Out" by Robert Tepper is also included. Perhaps the soundtrack's most popular tune is "Eye Of The Tiger". The album reached the Top Ten on the Billboard 200 Album Chart and was certified Platinum by the RIAA.

Rocky IV was a movie for the ages. The story of a man who had it all, only to lose so much overnight. It had a focus on personal, political, spiritual and athletic levels. Sylvester Stallone as Rocky Balboa played the most multi-dimensional role of his career.

The official soundtrack album for Angelina Jolie's drama By the Sea is composed by Academy Award winner Gabriel Yared (The English Patient, The Talented Mr. Ripley, Cold Mountain, 1408) who previously scored Jolie's In the Land of Blood and Honey.

Pheon is a new label started by Jonny Trunk with James Pianta from Votary / Roundtable. Both have a love of obscure library music, film music and jazz. Using those musical fields as a starting point, the label will be issuing very limited, vinyl only short runs of desirable and obscure LPs, compilations and new old discoveries.

DESCRIPTION: As most library music geeks know, some of the finest, oddest and most sought-after library music comes from Italy. But collecting it is an expensive business, and one full of risks - many library LPs are one trackers but will still set you back hundreds. So, here we present a twelve tracker - twelve killer cues of library gold; jazz, abstracted oddness, killer percussion, amazing ideas, beautiful sound - and all for a bargain price. These cues were all recorded in the late 1960s and early 1970s, and all come from possibly the most desirable library label of all, 'SR', a company originally set up by The Sermi Film Co. The original recordings are now mostly owned by Cometa, hence our album title. The composers are masters of the genre, the musicians faultless. It's a superb comp, very limited, with no chance of a repress.

I really love to review music that does not take an entirely definable direction but switches in between related genres and sometimes even styles that are based upon each other. This album can be put in the field of so called 'library music', sound records made for use in movies and TV productions, commercials and for similar purposes to enhance the tension of the atmosphere in very dramatic scenes or accompany the more mellow and relaxed moments with lush harmony carpets. And from all these 'library' albums, this is one of the most sought after by collectors around the world due to the musical quality of its content. And so we sit back, relax, close our eyes and get ready for the movie that only exists in our imagination. The STRINGTRONICS take us on a journey from the dark city gorges of any North American metropolis where steaming hot funky and jazzy rhythms amalgamate and get clothed in a veil of lush string arrangements to the banks of the river Seine where painters draw portraits of tourists and people sit in the sun and relax to the typical chanson melodies full of melancholy but also joy of life. In there is a tinge of the 1950 exotica music showing up here and there through Latin grooves and some flimsy elements of rock shine through the whole soundscape as well. It is fantastic but not easy to categorize, could appeal to fans of US movie soundtracks from the early 70s and late 60s, created by folks like George Clinton but also be loved by people who enjoy the early works of electronic pop pioneers such as Walter Carlos and finally by space age pop aficionados. It is all in there and the reference of some artists drawing or painting is not far from what the music feels like. The participating musicians paint their melody - and rhythm patterns with an enormous feeling for depth and emotion. A masterpiece!

Troubadour is the fourth album by JJ Cale, released in
1976. Eric Clapton covered the song 'Cocaine' on his 1977 album Slowhand, turning it into one of his biggest hits.

Clapton later covered the track 'Travelin' Light' for his 2001 studio album Reptile. 'Travelin' Light' was also recorded by Widespread Panic for their album Space Wrangler in 1988.

Producer Audie Ashworth introduced some different instruments for a slightly altered sound on Troubadour. But the album still bears the typical introspective J.J. Cale style we all love so much!

Brilliant tv and movie themes by Francois de roubaix!!! On 20 November 1975 Francois de Roubaix disappeared while diving. Before going towards this tragic death, Francois had received an order for a television series theme tune "Commissaire Moulin". As usual, the composed melody has been indelibly printed in the collective memory. Francois de Roubaix always put his fingers where it should be! Between electronic tricks and acoustic works, this record brings the themes of this television series together with other musics composed for never released or still unknown projects... All unpublished music, never pressed on vinyl! It soon becomes clear that Francois de Roubaix feels confortable with this kind of exercises. The result is every time sublime. Recommended!!

Originally released in 1964, My Name Is Albert Ayler, is the debut album from legendary free-jazz saxophonist Albert Ayler. Recorded in Copenhagen with a Scandinavian rhythm section this album sets the stage for the sheer brilliance that was to come. Although the backing band plays fairly straight ahead bop and feels out of place at times, it doesn't detract from the program as a whole, as Ayler's singular sound shines through. This is especially true on the absolutely stunning version of "Summertime". An essential piece of the Albert Ayler puzzle, one of the most unique jazz musicians of the 20th century.

Featuring an 11 piece group with new arrangements on some of his most well known compositions, this album is one of Mingus' most timeless and influential releases. Originally released in 1964, Mingus Mingus Mingus Mingus Mingus is an essential title from one of jazz's most enduring figures.

On Halloween 2014, the director and composer John Carpenter introduced the world to the next phase of his career with 'Vortex,' the first single from Lost Themes, his first-ever solo record. In the months that followed, Lost Themes right­fully returned Carpenter to the forefront of the discussion of music and film's crucial intersection. Carpenter's foundational primacy and lasting influence on genre score work was both rediscovered and reaffirmed. So widespread was the acclaim for Lost Themes, that the composer was moved to embark on something he had never before entertained - playing his music live in front of an audience.

2016 will host the first ever John Carpenter tour and in true Carpenter spirit, a sequel to Lost Themes: Lost Themes II. The follow-up brings quite a few noticeable changes to the process, which result in an even more cohesive record. Lost Themes' cowriters Cody Carpenter (John's son) and Daniel Davies (John's godson) both returned. Cody was recently also heard as a composer for Showtime's Masters of Horror series (Cigarette Burns and Pro-Life), and NBC's Zoo. Davies was a composer for NBC's Zoo, as well as the motion picture Condemned.

All three brought in sketches and worked together in the same city, a luxury they weren't afforded on the first Lost Themes. The result was a more focused effort, one that was completed on a compressed schedule — not unlike Carpenter's classic, notoriously low-budget early films. The musical world of Lost Themes II is also a wider one than that of its predecessor. More electric and acoustic guitar help flesh out the songs, still driven by Carpenter's trademark minimal synth.

Keep your eyes peeled for John and his co-writers to hit the road next year performing both lost and newly found themes, in addition to retrospective work from Mr. Carpenter's multi-generational career. Long live the Horror Master.

Herman Poole Blount, better known to the world as Sun Ra, lived more musical lives in his 79 years on this planet (and others) than seems possible. In the 30s he was the most rigorous bandleader in Birmingham, heading the Sonny Blount Orchestra and filling every waking moment with music or philosophical discussions, by the 40s he had moved to Chicago and performed with luminaries such as Wynonie Harris, Fletcher Henderson, and Coleman Hawkins. By the 50s he had changed his name to Sun Ra and began performing with longtime Arkestra bandmates John Gilmore and Marshall Allen. Ra started his own label, El Saturn (or Saturn), to release his own recordings as well as those featuring the Arkestra backing local R&B and doo-wop groups. Though the genres showcased here are more pop than the world has come to expect from Sun Ra, the vibe and feel is purely cosmic, producing some of the wildest, strangest R&B ever created on this side of the sun. Essential early Sun Ra performances and productions.

With a band that includes Chet Baker, Bud Shank, Pepper Adams, and Don Fagerquist, with arrangements by the brilliant Johnny Mandel, you know this is going to be full of swinging and classy arrangements and soloing, and moody ballad work. A truly great piece of West Coast Jazz, the soundtrack to a film about one of the most idolized actors in American film history.

First screened in April 1963. The plot is loosely based on Shakespeare's Othello, updated and transplanted
to early-Sixties London - specifically a jazz club situated in a converted East End warehouse.
The film soundtrack was made in Britain by British musicians, but one with very much its own musical
identity. And that identity is augmented by contributions from American jazz legends Dave Brubeck and

Composer Daniel Pemberton follows up his movie score for The Man from U.N.C.L.E. (MOVATM056) with not one but three different scores for Steve Jobs, the new Danny Boyle film starring Michael Fassbender as Apple's controversial visionary leader.

"There is not one side of music that could reflect Jobs' personality. There is a classical side to him, a rebellious side to him, a technical side to him, a soft side to him, and a cold side to him", Pemberton explains. The movie is therefore divided into three acts, each with a different musical theme.

The first act "Vision" is set in 1984 when Steve Jobs had his vision of what personal computing could bring to the world. Then there is "Revenge" in 1988 when he sets up this company pretty much to get revenge on the people he thought had betrayed him at Apple. Finally, "Wisdom" is the climax with his own personal realization of what his goals in life have been and what has been slightly misguided.

Pemberton wanted to have a sound that captured the times so for the first act he used synthesizers from the early '80s. The third act is performed on a Mac computer using Logic - modern technology which wouldn't be available weren't it for Apple. For Act II, he used "the oldest computer that still exists, which is the orchestra. You give them information which is notation and they interpret that in a way better than any piece of technology has managed to beat.

In early 20th-century Britain, the growing suffragette movement forever changes the life of working wife and mother Maud Watts (Carey Mulligan). Galvanized by political activist Emmeline Pankhurst (Meryl Streep), Watts joins a diverse group of women who fight for equality and the right to vote. Faced with increasing police action, Maud and her dedicated suffragettes must play a dangerous game of cat-and-mouse, risking their jobs, homes, family and lives for a just cause.

On his score for Suffragette, Oscar-, BAFTA-, Golden Globe-, and Grammy-winning composer Alexandre Desplat (The Grand Budapest Hotel, The King's Speech) offers un-nostalgic orchestral accompaniment to the film. A musical shape-shifter, here Desplat imparts the urgency at the heart of the film above all else, with unresolved chords, climbing progressions, and a pulsing low-end via, most prominently, percussion, strings, piano, and horns.

From the gently ominous waltz of 'Demonstration' to the trembling high-pitched strings of 'Child Taken,' the score is quiet but tense and, as always, well-suited.

A really great Italian jazz score composed for La Legge dei Gangsters (Gangster's Law), an obscure 1969 Italian crime film starring the mighty Klaus Kinski. Featuring a large ensemble of the country's strongest players (including Oscar Valdambrini on trumpet), the music is a creation of the great Piero Umiliani and is plenty full of sophisticated, groovy and romantic tunes. For the first time ever in LP the complete original score in a numbered limited edition, colored vinyl for the RECORD STORE DAY 2016.

Clint Mansell's score for Darren Aronofsky's film Black Swan (2010) is a unique creature in itself - adapting Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky's Swan Lake, and deconstructing it into a modern film score for a twisted fairy tale.
