Endeavors Ep

12inchVR013
VOLTAIRE RECORDS
03.09.2015

"Endeavors", the 4th compilation from Voltaire Records, explores the vibes of boogie, disco, modern funk, and whatever the hell type of music is also on there that doesn't fit into those aforementioned genres.
It's the music that a bunch of nasty psychotic animals would be jamming in a festering urban back alley, as shown on the compilation cover, illustrated by Oakland- based artist, Jessie California

Harvey Sutherland, hailing from Melbourne, kicks off the compilation with 'That's The Fact, Jack' a drifting G-Funky/Rhodes composition that glides smoothly along like a cutlass supreme in the slow lane. K-Maxx, of the Sweater Funk crew, next takes on production and MC duty on 'Wake Up', and churns out a heavy boogie-soul testament to the female persuasion. XL Middleton closes out the A side with 'One and Only' an uptempo boogie-slapper accompanied by his signature shredding keyboard lead. On the B Side, Social Lovers start it off with the deep disco cut 'Can't Let It Go', which dubs along as vocalist Megan D weaves her sultry vocals between polyrhythmic percussion. Moon B next challenges the dancefloor to pinpoint his sound to a specific era, location, or vibe...and comes up with the atmospheric groove of "Back On". Timothy Fairplay closes out the comp with the sinister rolling sci-fi cut 'Rooftop Meeting'; an altruistic anthem of computer hardware mayhem, that defies time and space

Jan Ketel - Girliewood Ep Inc. Luvless Rmx

Pure warmth and a deephouse beauty by East German arrangement perfectionist Jan Ketel. Including a not-from-this-world version by Rose Record's Luvless and a collaboration with his mate Siggatunez, Jan Ketel's Girliewood EP leads you to the warmer days and brings heat to the floor.
Starting with the title song, Jan Ketel introduces us to his understanding of deepness. A warm and thick pad wrapped into a filigree arrange ment of percussive high-drums, combined with an impulsive kick-drum, Girliewood builds a paralyzing intro. It develops to a first break, which emphasizes the deep groove to the point, when the kick drum comes back again. It becomes a very groovy and harmonic song, which builds itself up again. Added with well arranged keys and constantly moving drum elements, it gets to the point where it came from.
A2 is Luvless' slower version of Walking Away (B2), which could be described as a drifty but sedate floor-filler. Luvless uses a well collected drum set, containing a very pregnant dynamic and organic clap sound combined with a constantly playing murder bassline at the beginning. Step by step and in a well thought out way, main elements of the original enter the song to a part you could call the height. After that it comes to a long break, which prepares and makes you needing the last part. Luvless brings back the full effect and rounds up his version by minimizing it to a percussive end, containing that heavy bassline. It ends where it started and fits more than perfectly into the context of the whole EP. What a killer...thanks for that!
Over on B1 'Background' is a co-production with his buddy Siggatunez. Characterized by a dirty rhodes chord line and a very dynamic and constantly moving arrangement, it perfectly flows from the beginning to the end. In between, a lot of sample-work happens, which mainly includes a divided voice, a chopped piano-line and an electric key-patch and makes 'Background' highly melodic and harmonic.
Finally 'Walking Away' drives heavy from the beginning on. A pumping bassline kick-drum-clap-ensemble directly screws into your stomach to a point, where the very warm and harmonic main pad/bell/electric-key-sample appears from nowhere. From this time on, 'Walking Away' rises up to a height by adding very nice but descent parts step by step. It does not stop flowing until it comes to the break, which makes you just want more...and you will get exactly what you need, when the kick-drum drops again...till Jan brings it to a perfect end.
The Girliewood EP is a piece of music as we all deserve it...round, deep, warm and a must have this summer...Jan Ketel gets your soul moving.

Jose Padilla - Lollipop (i:cube & Dream 2 Science Rmxs)

Balearic legend Jose Padilla's 'So Many Colours' has been one of the albums of the year for many. The remix package for 'Lollipop' features luscious remixes from I:Cube, Dream2Science and a special 12 inch version from original producer Telephones.

In Autumn 2014, Jose invited four of the best current producers to the island of Ibiza and developed an album that covers all angles from beachlife to nightlife or simply watching the sunset, this is an record to get lost in. Bringing together the production skills of Mark Barrott, Wolf Müller, Tornado Wallace and Telephones, it is the perfect summation of the Balearic scene in one album, all brought together in a beautifully artworked package.

There is no shortage of singles International Feel could have run with from the album, but following the success of the Springreleased 'Day One', it made sense to look to another Telephones production 'Lollipop' as the next single.

'Lollipop' sounds like summer. The floating melody and rolling groove instantly putting you in that 'Ibiza Summer state of mind', perfectly complemented by new remixes from I:Cube and Dream2Science.

Mallorquin - Slow Hot Confetti / The Planet I Left Behind

The second release on Tokyo and Hong Kong based label Palms & Charms takes you back to a moment in your life when perhaps things weren't going right.

It was late, you'd had a couple of large rum and sodas and were nursing a cold beer against the sub-tropical humidity.
You took to the streets, and as you paced through the 2am gloom a fine rain began to fall, illuminated by the light of the waxing gibbous moon till it shone like 'Slow Hot Confetti'.

You slowly smiled and realised everything was going to be alright.
Side A closes with a remix from Max Essa (Jansen Jardin, Is It Balearic), giving an assertive step to your stride as you walk on to brighter days.

On side B, 'The Planet I Left Behind' is a space-disco odyssey, telling a tale of the interplanetary longing of pan-cosmic travel.
Missing home, you steer your rocket-ship through the infinity of space, heading firmly in the direction of the dance-floor, where other-worldly beings wave multiple limbs.
The journey continues as Coyote (Is It Balearic Recordings), offer a pulsating remix of galactic proportions.

Enjoy your voyage to the stars.

Joey Negro - Le Freak - Music Inspired By Chic

Arguably, Dave Lee aka Joey Negro and his Z Records label are the contemporary go-to Disco label. And it was only a matter of time that Mr Lee would delve deep into his vinyl vaults and pull a selection of sound-alike tracks inspired by that late 70s Chic sound.
To date, Chic and their productions have notched-up sales of over 100,000,000, so with that in mind, it comes at no surprise that their music has inspired others to pick up the bass & lead guitar and emulate that groovy sound... and that 's exactly what this album is all about.
'Le Freak Music Inspired by Chic - Complied by Joey Negro' contains fourteen glorious Chic inspired cuts that groove like a Disco train straight from the 70s.
The Chic production sound must be one of the most distinctive in disco, soul, funk or pop music generally, a sound that was lent very successfully to Sister Sledge, Diana Ross, Debbie Harry and many more in the late 70s and early 80s heyday. The much-copied formula has been an inspiration to many producers old and new, most recently with the world dominating Daft Punk.
Joey Negro is one such producer who has been inspired by the production sound of Rodgers and Edwards over the years and, until now, there has not been a collection of tracks that were influenced by rather than produced by Chic.
There are many more artists out there that have drawn inspiration from this sound but this is Joey Negros personal selection of tracks that have the unmistakable groove including one from his own Sunburst Band project.
Nile Rodgers continues to tour the globe with his Chic live show as well as produce and make guest appearances on many hit records and he shows no sign of slowing down yet.

Flash & The Pan - The Balearic Sound Of

Fantastic new compilation from Sunkissed Records features four Balearic rarities from the great late 70's early 80's Dutch New Wave groovers Flash & The Pan all of which received heavy rotation at the original Ibiza parties. Kicks off with the full 12' version of one of DJ Alfredo's Amnesia anthems, the brilliant low slung 'Midnight Man' followed by the bass-driven slo-mo disco groove of 'Hole In The Middle' taken from their 1978 self titled debut LP. On the B-Side we get the hard to find disco mix of 'Waiting For A Train' a huge favourite of DJ Harvey who also featured the last track 'Walking In The Rain' on his critically acclaimed Summer Beach set mix from a few years back. Essential slices of Balearic history that still sound fresh today.

Mr. K - The Mr. K Edits 7-inch

January of 2016 will mark Danny Krivit's 45th anniversary of DJing. Those decades have essentially spanned the entire arc of contemporary dance music's evolution and, as anyone who's heard him play will attest, Danny does the same in his creative, far-reaching DJ sets. What better way to mark a 45th anniversary than to release a 45RPM record The latest offering from Most Excellent Unlimited is a two-sided seven-inch that features Danny touching up two percussive monsters that exemplify the down and dirty tribal vibe of the earliest, pre-disco dancefloors. The breakdown section of Cymande's "Bra" is teased to multiple climaxes on one side while the flip, slyly sliced from obscure German progressive rockers Niagara, takes no prisoners, riding a ferocious drum break for four-plus minutes of pleasure.
As Mr. K's auspicious landmark approaches, Most Excellent Unlimited plans to release a series of sevens that will chart Danny's path through these past 45 years of dance music, while Danny himself will be joining the fun by adding 45s-only sets to his already diverse repertoire.

I Am So Ep

GRUUV
05.02.2014

Newbie Nerdz aka Alex Vovel and Dario Frenda, made their debut single release back in 2011 and since then have been steadily progressing throughout the industry.
Having already released original material on the infamous Skint Records and 303lovers to name a few, amongst remixes spreading across the likes of Neim and Sleazy Deep, the pair have certainly taken another step forward with this forthcoming release on Audiojack's imprint, Gruuv.
Starting the release is the first original track 'I Am So', which sees Newbie Nerdz deliver on point.
The house fuelled track delivers a direct 4/4 rhythm, layered with continuous piano stabs and echoing vocals.
Up next, are the sounds of the second original track 'Every Time', which sees another solid delivery from the duo.
Featuring stretched out basslines, coupled with wavering tones and tripled with an original male vocal, this one is our personal favourite.
First to deliver the first of two remixes this release offers, is Hypercolour artist Last Magpie who moulds 'I Am So' to his own.
Bass heavy with plenty off-kilter drums, synth and vocals; this remix offers an infectious emotive sound.
Closing the release is Italy's Leon, who serves up his trippy dub remix of 'Every Time'.
Leon ensures his hooky drum fuelled sound cleverly progresses throughout the entirety of the track, whilst introducing subtle elements and vocals to rework this into an ultimate dub rework.

You could not miss the 4/4 Kickdrum during the 90s in the Rhein-Main-Area around Frankfurt/Germany. Therefore Phonk D's first attempts on House and Techno were pretty successful during this period. But his feet being too big for just one dancefloor he developed a taste for Funk, Disco and Hiphop, too. So all these influences kept on working together and - as a result - in 2014 he founded his own label 'Footjob". Three records have been released so far, all of them collaborations with friends, and now no.4 is ready to take off - being Phonk D's first solo project: Expect some heavy Phonk to get your foot-job done!

The Kmds - Part Time Lovers (remixes)

The next package from the ever-busy MB Disco label is a whopping and wonderful collection of remixes of British/Polish duo The KDMS's hit single 'Part Time Lovers'. Originally released on Comma, it has been fully licensed to the label who serve it up here in original form as well as with remixes from Iron Curtis, Acid Washed, label boss Martin Brodin and Nirosta Steel.

The KDMS have proven themselves fine purveyors of disco funk and deep down boogie, turning the heads of press and punters alike in the process. Their single, 'Part Time Lovers' is a breezy and dreamy bit of instrument rich disco with dazzling synths and uplifting vocals and is ripe for remixing, so it's no wonder MB Disco have decided to do just that.

First up is label head and revered producer Martin Brodin goes for an uplifting hosue cum disco vibe with his remix. Leaving in the drama of the original vocals, there are plenty of grinding analogue basslines buried deep within the shimmering, uplifting remix.

Next up is German producer and an associate of both Smallville and Tensnake's Mirau label. Iron Curtis. He turns in two remixes; the first strips the track back to drums and percussion and lays in a monstrous and wobbling bassline before laying the vocal back on the top. It's a direct deep house number with plenty of anthemic potential.

The flipside introduce French duo Acid Washed who release on the legendary Record Makers label. Fresh from the release of their album House of Melancholy the pair reimagines 'Part Time Lovers' as a louche bit of synthy disco pop. There is plenty of cosmic energy and celestial energy within the glistening synths and hip-swaying hand claps and it's such a fine rework it's hard to imagine it isn't an original track in itself.

Second out is a remix .from Nirosta Steel, who is actually Steven Hall. Hall also works as part of the much loved Arthur's Landing project - a group of musicians who formerly worked with cult music genius Arthur Russell. This moniker is something of a secret and underground project and the music matches that. The Eastwood remix is a totally deconstructed reworking that features heavily filtered vocals, some amazing twanging guitar strums which take you straight to a hazy summer beach and the whole thing in drowned in echo, much like the work of Arthur Russell.

This is a very healthy package that genuinely offers plenty of different, and equally essential, takes on the great original by The KDMS and confirms MB Disco to be one of the genre's finest assets when it comes to taking the genre forward.

Francesco Tristano - Pres Body Language 16

For a long time, Francesco Tristano has behaved, musically, like a wild child making fun of his parent´s supervision, and repeatedly ran away from home to visit forbidden locations. One only has to review last year´s agenda of concerts: in between solemn dates in important venues all over the planet where he interprets programs of baroque and contemporary music, centring around composers like Johann Sebastian Bach, Maurice Ravel, George Gershwin or Dietrich Buxtehude on the piano, are several commitments under the epigraph `Francesco Tristano live´. Those escapes have little to do with classical music; quite the opposite actually. They show that Francesco´s commitment to electronic sounds remains as alive as when he started to release his first 'dance' records on Infiné, even though over the last years he consolidated his position as one of the most requested pianists with one of the most brilliant repertoires of his generation. When Francesco Tristano escapes to a club, the spirit which possesses him is the one of Techno, specifically the original Detroit sound. There, in the heat of the cabin, he switches from piano to synthesizer, from pedals to software and what flows out of the speakers is a kind of music, which can only fit in this hedonistic context and the celebration of the body: expansive, rhythmic, emotional, sprinkled with piano stabs and unstoppable grooves.

Love On The Rocks
11.06.2014

Love On The Rocks returns to the floor, with their second EP in what will prove to be an exciting summer of releases. Following the success of the Massimiliano Pagliara produced debut, LOTR presents the world premiere of Ess O Ess - a new venture from London based producers Jamie Blanco and Chris Stoker. After a flying episode on the first LOTR release, 'Baboon' pushes us back to earth, to the filthy grounds of the muggy woodlands of the southern hemisphere. The jungle motif that leads the track from the beginning slowly fades into a mild breeze of a distinct guitar theme before shaman voices call the ghosts of his ancestors and completes the patina on this heavy Malaria infected summer jam. Portuguese musician and demanded producer Tiago uses the jungle setting to create a classic special agent disco movie scene in the exotic wild of the mid seventies, erotic adventures included. Finally, calming down from an after party in some sleazy hotel room, the Bad Passion team offer their own take - a Dub that detaches the bass guitar from the original offering the appropriate space to grow and delay. Now brush off your shoulders and start a fire - it's cool out there in the desert at night.

Klaus Lunde - Exerxes Ep

Drum Island unveil their tenth release with an extraordinary EP from Norway's Klaus Lunde.

From Norway's oldest city Tonsberg comes the stargazing sounds of Klaus Lunde: an acclaimed and prolific electronic music composer, his array of releases under the Xerxes Music pseudonym explore a unique take on ambience and tonal electronica that's a mesmerising and accomplished body of work to be sure.

This, undoubtedly many people's first introduction to his work, is a perfectly pitched collection that highlights the familiar themes of the Xerxes work, but fits easily into the Drum Island blueprint of music for the midnight sun. On the Exerxes EP, we're treated to pulsating Balearic trance and zero gravity house before gliding into relaxed ambience, soothing New Age and horizontal night music.
We then dive further into the psychedelic ocean hidden below with truly tripped out Kosmiche vignettes of warping and spine-tingling odd-pop.

The Kenneth Bager Experience F - Fragment Sixteen

THIS IS A SPECIAL VINYL ONLY RELEASEThe label started back in 2010 and have had a strong output from day one with releases/remixes from people like diskJokke, Bottin, Ray Mang, Chicken Lips, Headman and legendary artists like Giorgio Moroder, Leroy Burgess and Newcleus. The label is all about Disco music in all different directions. New or old doesn't matter. This release is no exception to the successful formula. It all came to life simply for the love of the original version from Kenneth's album Fragments From A Space Cadet in 2010. Martin couldn't get rid of the irresistible vocals that gets stuck in his brain. Said and done, Martin licensed the track and made these exclusive VINYL ONLY remixes together with his fellow Swede, Copycat. They came up with a Nu-Disco chugger with a Balearic feel to it with a glimpse of 80's vocoder synth-funk. It keeps the original feel and just adds the right elements for making it working better for the clubs. A Vocal and Dub version.

V/a - Where Good Friends Meet #3

Wet Play invite you to take a dip into their aural bubble bath for a third soaking as they complete their 'Where Good Friends Meet' triptych on Red Laser Records. Inaugurating three new players into their much-loved steam room alongside long-serving patron, Metrodome.
Rest assured this is one wash closet you're sure to frequent again and again.

Benny Badge, long term friend and cohort of our Randall Marsh, twice removed Manc and modern funk extraordinaire dons his Freekwency cap and kicks things off with 'Streetboxx' - a loose and squelchy stroller / moocher dripping with Benny's flair for drum programming and goose-bump inducing melodies. Never untucked but rambunctiously grooving its way through Melbourne's sun-kissed, wide highways without a foamy dangler in sight.

Next, we jump into the Delorian and revisit 1983 as Glasgow's best kept secret, Tension provides possibly the most authentic slice of summertime soul you've heard since any of us here at Wet Play HQ were even born (Ruf Dug excused). Listen to that lyric - the guitars, niggling synth licks and perfectly executed tom rolls: fuck!
Timeless boogie!

Giving you all the smells and feelings of a thorough soaking Metrodome and Il Bosco flip the script and give you the other flavours of our sensual soiree on the flip.

'Xanthan Gum' instantly reeks of what is now the standard de rigueur from Metrodome - futureproof as a Swiss army knife, sound system ready to tickle the fuck outta the tweeters, subs & nether regions, while being blissfully catchy, radiant and groovy as hell.
The cats out of the bag on this guy. We know peops are after snapping up his art like a new Picasso. An increasingly busy body, wrist-deep in various projects including pounding out beats for Manchester's infamous Levelz crew - we're super buzzed that he's kept some stone cold gems like this one held back for his foster family / nursery group Wet Play :) Nice one champ.

Finally, if you didn't already know, none of these Wet Play records would happen without parent label Red Laser having faith in our unprofessional, haphazard yet highly spirited outfit. Matt and Woody, perhaps witnessing a mirror of their former years, saw the intoxicating and unique atmosphere at our club nights and got us into gear to release these records; so it's a double buzz when Woody sparks up his machines and gets all cybotronic on our arses under his Il Bosco guise.

Hitting perfectly that late-night, drugged-out moment of floating-in-a-timeless-vacuum bliss when the smoke and the strobe and the lasers hit maximum, and the dancefloor's united in a serotonin flooded synergy; his 'Mind Meld' dub of Kano's 'Another Life' instantly transports you to the centre of the dancefloor at our first adopted home, Kraak. Emotional, hedonistic times from whence intense relationships were made, fresh moments were etched into people's minds and happiness poured into the streets.

Butch Feat. Benjamin Franklin - Highbeams (remixes)

Second part of Butch's hot 'Highbeams' release features three great remixes of the original 12' by esteemed producers Maceo Plex, Miguel Campbell and PBR Streetgang.. hot as you like!!
Ellum label boss Maceo Plex steps up for the first interpretation of Highbeams and stays quite close to original whilst adding his typically tight drum programming and an electro infused bass line to the party.
On the flip and its Miguel Campbell's turn to refigure Highbeams and he does so by restructuring the original vocal around warm pads and a trademark bass line, giving it the usual injection of cosmic funk he has become so renowned for.
PBR Streetgang then throw in a classy remix of Faith characterised by detuned vocal chops, an infectious bass line and very tight production skills.
A great remix package for a great double header release..

Fernando - Infinite Ways

The artist known as 'Fernando' once washed up on the shores of Uruguay after a freak boating accident off the coast of Carilo, Buenos Aires in 2008. An incident that occurred while on a submarine studio mission conducting sonic experiments aboard a renovated and highly customised Uboat circa 1945. Free from constraints & operating outside territorial waters, Fernando was putting the finishing touches to a new collection of music, setting out to bottle those sweet and indescribable moments in suspended time and space when we feel weightless and surrounded by sounds richer than reality.... an inexact science, yet a universal privilege that life and ears afford us. Presumed dead, what in fact happened was a serendipitous encounter between the lucky survivor and a roaming associate of International Feel, who, during a walk along the sands of Punta Del Diablo, found an airtight USB stick clutched inside the hand of a partial amnesiac, dazed and shivering but with a sly smile stretched across his sun and sea worn face. It seems that whatever Fernando was looking for, he had found and thanks to the saviour of that day and (much further down the line) Fernando's blessing, it sees the light of day on October
13th, 2014 in all good record stores.

Dinky - Blind

Dinky

Blind

12inchVQ032
Vision Quest
22.07.2013

Dinky delves further into her Chilean roots while softly embedding the rhythm of the night with next single 'Blind' from the album 'Dimension D'. Inspired by old Jazz of the 30s and 40s, Dinky weaves a beguiling story with the acoustic swing imbued with her own electronic touch. Stepping up for the first remix are part-time collaborators Hreno and The Mole who deliver the MHMD Remix stripping almost entirely the original's voice and melody, instead leading with a carnivalesque drum groove and frayed, oscillating synths. Scandinavian disco lord Prins Thomas keeps the melody in tact but encases it in a framework of spaceout spooky disco for his 'Diskomiks' and fantastic moody Dub.

Alejandra Del Pilar Iglesias Rivera was named Dinky by her sister at birth. Born and raised in Santiago, Chile, as a child she studied Ballet and the Suzuki method of piano before relocating to New York to become a contemporary dancer.

Her drive to make music brought her to Berlin a decade ago where she quickly became a dominant force in dance music, making her mark through releases on Carpark, Cocoon, Ostgut, and the critically acclaimed ´Anemik´ album in 2009 on Mathew Jonson´s Wagon Repair. Her fifth studio album, 'Dimension D' on Visionquest sees her evolve into singer-songwriter and performer and take on a new musical direction.

Chris Hreno and The Mole are both revered Canadian producers residing in Berlin who have joined forces in the past on remixes for various labels including Turbo Recordings, Haunt, and Souvenir. The Mole has had prolific solo output including his exceptional debut album on Wagon Repair 'As High As The Sky'. Hreno has made a recent comeback to production with EPs on Sound Architecture and Meander.

Prins Thomas is widely regarded as a pioneer of the space-disco sounds emanating from his native Norway. Joining forces with Hans-Peter Lindstrøm in 2003, the pair both have a background in bands - Prins being an accomplished bass player - and they run and release music on own labels Feedelity, Full Pupp and Internasjonal.
