Earth Boys - Trail Mix

Public Release's lucky thirteen and second release of 2017 is by another kindred spirit newcomer to the label; Earth Boys, a Brooklyn-based duo that's all dreamy keys, soft pads, peace frogs, throwback vibes, and deftly futuristic house rhythms, though not necessarily in that order.
With Trail Mix, Mike Sherburn and Julian Duron have built four gloriously friendly, oddball house cuts— cheeky, choppy vocal samples juxtaposed against schmaltzy piano licks and punchy tribal rhythms rubbing against smooth bass figurations. Their ironic sense of humor intersects with precisely crafted productions in a way that underscores both, making the EP a brilliant concoction of bouncy, energetic dance music that teases the genre as much as it revels in it. If that messes with your head, just shut down your left brain, drop the needle, take a big ol' rip, and see where a microdose of Earth Boys will take you.

Hatti Vatti

Szum (2x12")

12inchMOST003LP
MOST Records
27.03.2017

Hatti Vatti, real name Piotr Kalinski, is one of the Polish underground's most vital figures. He is known for his analogue focused interpretations of an array of sounds, from ambient to footwork. He's been releasing avant-garde electronica on Polish, yet internationally recognized, labels like Absys and Moonshine since 2009 and engaged in collabos with artists like Synkro of Apollo Records fame and Nanook Of The North project alongside composer Stefan Wesolowski, as featured on Boiler Room. Hatti Vatti is perhaps one of the very few Polish electronic artists gaining even more attention abroad. He toured Northern Hemisphere from Japan and South Korea to Greenland and Iceland where he's a frequent visitor.

While working on "SZUM" (noise or hiss in Polish), his first longplay since 2014, Hatti Vatti was invited by Polish National Audiovisual Institute to join RE:VIVE - a project curated by the Netherlands Institute of Sound & Vision that already resulted with a strikingly original LP from Lakker in 2016. Having already been inspired by the pioneering work of artists from the Experimental Studio of the Polish Radio, founded in 1962, as well as by animated film scores of the 60s, 70s and 80s, RE:VIVE presented Hatti Vatti with the unmissable opportunity to delve with unprecedented access into the vast archives of the Polish National Audiovisual Institute in Warsaw. Here, he took the original, sometimes fractured yet melodic compositions he had been working on, and injected with a haunting layer of Iron Curtain era psychedelia. Far beyond a typical 'sampledelic' excursion, SZUM is the sound of a cutting edge electronic craftsman, reimagining his forward thinking work alongside the pioneering ghosts of the past. Album offers a typically bold, retro futuristic exploration of Poland's rich history of sound experimentation, one that simultaneously corresponds closely with contemporary issues and events in the country.

SZUM is promoted with a video of album highlight, Hero/in. Partially shot across iconic examples of Poland's socialist era estate, the video combines striking architecture and tate of the art projection mapping, casting Witold Giesz's experimental animated film The Star against the bloc's unmistakable skyline.

Various - Kunta Kinte Riddim 2017

REPRESSED !!
Dub-Stuy's riddim series returns with a fresh take on a Jah Shaka classic Dub-Stuy returns with the second installment of their riddim series in which the Brooklyn-based collective pays homage to the tradition of Jamaican dancehall riddims with a fresh modern twist and versions from an international line-up of vocalists.Following an update of King Jammy's Punanny riddim on the first release of the series, Dub-Stuy is taking on yet another classic. This time, DJ Madd brings the classic Kunta Kinte riddim into the 21st century with rolling drums, floating percussion, and weighty bass anchoring the timeless and irresistible melody that has come to define the riddim for generations of fans. First brought to the attention of UK dub fans by the mighty Jah Shaka , and originally recorded by a little known band from Battersea, Kunta Kinte has become a staple of dub music's evolution, with its eponymous flute melody making numerous appearances over the decades in both underground and mainstream hits. For their 2017 edition, Dub-Stuy has brought three different vocalists from Jamaica and Europe to voice the riddim in a positive stance: Kingston legend Burro Banton preaches to the youth on 'Nah Sell Out'; Rider Shafique, whose unique voice and delivery has been a hallmark of the Bristol scene for the past few years, travels Over The Oceans to celebrate the links between worldwide sound system fans; and finally France's Shanti D takes a break from his work with OBF to bring it all together Inna Different Style. With Kunta Kinte Riddim 2017, Dub-Stuy takes us on a journey through the history of a famed riddim, connecting both style and sound from past dub sessions to current dancefloors.

Populous - Azulejos

Populous

Azulejos

CDWONDERCD31
Wonderwheel
09.06.2017

Populous is Andrea Mangia, a producer hailing from Lecce, a small city on the heel of Italy's boot. In 2003, he made his first jaunt into the music world with the album Quipo (via Morr Music). In 2005 he released Queue For Love, influenced by his reggae/hip-hop-infused surroundings (Lecce is known as Italy's Jamaica, as reggae and dancehall are extremely popular there) and in 2008 he released Drawn in Basic. Both albums were widely received by international critics, earning him a spot on the global music map. He became known for the way he seamlessly blends digital sounds with the analog warmth of soul/hip-hop/whatever else he's influenced by at the time.

In 2014, he released Night Safari via Bad Panda Records. The album, for Populous, was the embodiment of a dream. "This record is an imaginary nighttime safari to discover uncontaminated landscapes, strange creatures, wild animals, and mysterious lights," he told Thump Magazine. The record received praise from international media outlets, and was revered for its ability to sonically transcend borders.

Azulejos, his forthcoming release, has a South American tinge to it (and is even partly in Spanish). He moved to Lisbon, Portugal to start work on the album bringing with him only a laptop, a small MIDI keyboard, and a microphone. "Lisbon became both my studio and my muse," he says. He wandered the city collecting field recordings— from trams to people singing on street corners. He sifted through flea markets for records to use for sampling (exclusively Portuguese and South American). Populous describes Lisbon as a city 'halfway between South American soul and European modernity, African in some aspects, and dramatically melancholic." He channeled these poignant fusions into Azulejos, named for the typical tiled facades in Portugal— simultaneously bright and decaying. The album features collaborations with Nina Miranda of Smoke City and Ela Minus, among others. It's a love letter to Lisbon, and a dreamy quilt of sounds he both grew up with and heard for the first time during his influential stay in Portugal.

Stefano Ghittoni & Dj Rocca - Atemporal Space Tests

A deep mystery surrounds the movie "Nell'anno della Luna" (In the year of the Moon) and its soundtrack, which was released one year later. A beautiful work that lingers in between swing and melodies, in a fad that was popular a few decades earlier, complemented by some elements of novelty borrowed from beat and rock. The title track, "Alla brasiliana" and "Samba Querida" sound more traditional, while titles like "Afro Swing", "Underground", "Beatmania" (all featuring the vocal ensemble I 4+4, led by Nora Orlandi) represent a more adventurous side of this soundtrack.

Umeme latest ep "Athnan" reflects the focus of Daniele Labbate and Bas Bouma on producing a crossover between North African rhythms, analog synths and drummachines. Like the previous one, this ep is entirely performed and recorded live at Umeme's studio dividing the work between Bas Bouma who took care drums and percussion and Daniele Labbate responsible for the synthesizers and other harmonic instruments. While the previous album "Afrorave" was a dark and flashy mix of different styles and rhythms coming from of Togo, Ghana, Ethiopia "Athnan" instead concentrates exclusively on Maghreb and Sharqi music originally from Morocco, Algeria and Egypt. The EP is released on 339 records. Mixed and mastered by Italian producer Marco Spaventi. Korean artist Da-In designed the artwork.

Various - Out Of The Blue (compiled By Phil Mison)

Over the years, Phil Mison has become the go-to selector for those looking for Ibiza-themed compilations. None of his previous collections, though, have been quite as personal as Out Of The Blue, a compilation inspired by his first spell behind the decks at the Café Del Mar in 1993 - and the remarkable chain of events leading up to it. Mison made his first trip to Ibiza in the summer of 1991 and quickly fell in love with the magical music being played by Café Del Mar resident DJ, Jose Padilla. On his return to the UK, Mison began to cultivate his own take on the laidback, open-minded style, recording mix-tapes of "Ibiza style chill out" tunes to give to friends. In November 1992, Mison was hanging out in Tag Records, Soho, when Padilla walked in. He plucked up the courage to speak to the Spaniard because earlier that summer Mison had given one of his friends some tapes to take out to Jose in Ibiza so he wanted to see if he had got them. During the conversation Mison invited him down to his next DJ set at Nicky Holloway's club, the Milk Bar and less than three months later, and clearly impressed by what he'd heard on the tapes, Padilla invited Mison to fill in for him at the Café Del Mar, beginning in April '93. It's that first trip to DJ in Ibiza - a crazy six-weeks spent dividing his time between spinning records at Café Del Mar, hanging out in Jose Padilla's house in the hills, and meeting some particularly eccentric White Isle residents - that proved the inspiration for Out Of The Blue. The compilation contains a mixture of records that Mison played in his earliest Ibiza sets, those that remind him of that period, and recent discoveries that boast a similarly warm, loved-up vibe. Mison is at pains to point out that it's not a track-for-track representation of his first sets, but rather a collection inspired by this most momentous of experiences.

As you'd expect from a selector of Phil Mison's standing, Out Of The Blue is an outstanding collection. Some will no doubt hear the influence of his mentor - the man he credits with effectively turning his DJing career around - in the undulating rhythms and new age melodies of Kamasutra's "Sugar Step", the meandering synthesizer solos and Spanish language vocals of Congarilla's sublime "Sacred Tree", and the lilting flamenco guitars of "Gambarra", an unreleased mix from Mison's popular Cantoma project. Elsewhere, listeners can marvel at the starry ambient bliss of Belgian legend Frank De Wulf's "The End", recline to the saucer-eyed fusion jazz of the Christoph Spendel Group, shuffle along to tactile, hard-to-find period deep house from Language, Moodswings and Don Carlos, and marvel at The Cactus Rose Project's ridiculously rare "Jelly", a sparkling, disco-era jazz-rock outing partly inspired by the Doobie Brothers' "Long Train Running".
Out Of The Blue may well be a very personal selection of tracks celebrating a moment in time, but it's happily one that we can all enjoy.

Muslimgauze - Satyajit Eye

Muslimgauze

Satyajit Eye

CDARCHIVEELEVEN
Staalplaat
15.05.2017

It is rumored that if we mortals try to rewrite down everything that Mozart ever composed it would take us 80 years to do so, but then Mozart only lived tob e 35. There is something similar with the work of Bryn Jones, also known as Muslimgauze. He died in 1999 at the age of thirty-eight but produced an incredible body of work of which still not all has been released.

From the ultra creative period that brought us 'Hamas Arc' and 'Vote Hezbollah', but also the lost album 'Shekel Of Israeli Occupation' (which master was returned to Bryn Jones since it's dedication to the PLO was regarded as betrayal by Jones when PLO signed a peace treaty in 1993, and the music was erased), came the first signs of much more material, so that Staalplaat decided to add a free release as part of the cover of 'Hamas Arc': if you would send in a blank DAT and cut out the insert from the CD cover, thus having a j-card for the DAT you'd a free six song DAT only release (and mind: xeroxes not accepted). 'Hamas Arc' turned out to be one of the most succesful releases of Muslimgauze and endless amounts of DATs have been copied. Three original pieces, and three remixes from 'Vote Hezbollah' plus three pieces that were on the original DAT master of this, but, for reasons we no longer know, not used on the DAT release. Surpringly enough, 'Satyajit Eye' was bootlegged only this year and not earlier. This expanded version however completes the whole picture for this album, showing us first signs of looking towards Indian music, but also with breezy, desert like rhythms and sounds, such as the intense 'Zion Poison' (which reminds us of O Yuki Conjugate) or the way out music of the title track. 'Satyajit Eye' is a mysterious album, full of hidden layers and evoke a lonely, yet warm feeling of sun covered sand dunes.

Muslimgauze - Al Jar Zia Audio

If 'Satyajit Eye' (which is released at the same time on Staalplaat) only blinks at Indian culture, the album 'Al Jar Zia Audio' does this with both eyes open. It is known that Bryn Jones, the man behind Muslimgauze, looked further than the Palestinian conflict and used extensively the rhythms of India, Pakistan and other Eastern cultures. Like crossing borders in the bigger Islam regio, Jones takes whatever comes at hand and moulds into his own trademark sound - often imitated, never surpassed. The tribal bang of the drums, the sampled voices of the radio, combined with a strong sense of melody, makes the music of Muslimgauze stand out a mile from the rest. Whereas others fell into the traps of commercialism, Muslimgauze remained faithful to his own principals and methods. Even in digging the vaults of Muslimgauze, it's hard to find material that is of a weaker nature, as 'Al Jar Zia Audio' will proof. From the uplifting dance rhythms of 'We Have Shafika Habibi On Our Bus', including the chirping of crickets, the bubble bass of 'Arvinada Jewel Box' and crackles of sun burned vinyl, but also some curioso piece such as the highly experimental 'All I Have Is Sand' or the 'stop-start' approach of Brotherhood Of Tikrit'. Bryn Jones was not just a master who refined the art of sampling, but also knew how to create a fine piece of music out of it, more often then not displaying a fine sense of melody. 'Al Jar Zia Audio' offers fifteen tracks in over an hour of exciting Muslimgauze music of a sheer varied nature. Less mysterious, more open

Muslimgauze - Izlamic Songs

Muslimgauze

Izlamic Songs

The sun always shines brightly - very brightly - in the Middle East. Windows open, and we hear music. Not the music of Muslimgauze, but traditional music. We hear the Adhan, the call for prayer, the souk, and people talking. All along we hear music, music coming from all directions... rhythmic... mysterious... monotonous, perhaps... but like a swirling dervish, round and round it goes. Music of the Islam perhaps It is this music that was such an inspiration for Bryn Jones, although 'inspiration' probably doesn't exactly justify the seemingly endless flood of material he recorded during his lifetime. 'Islamic Songs' is one of Jones' many previously unreleased albums which now, finally, gets to see the light of day. Although albums by Muslimgauze were usually not thematicaly based , it is perhaps possible to see 'Islamic Songs' as a thematically organised album. Not that it's set in a particular surrounding - it's more akin to moving through the hustle and bustle of the busiest city of this occupied Palestinean land. Jones produces his beats with considerable force in the opening piece, 'I Shall Sing Until My Land Is Free', and also in the untitled sixth track. The latter, especially, has a nice deep bass thumb, which once again brings 'Azzazin' back to mind. It is the sound of a low-flying drone, spying on us. Who said that life was going to be easier in the occupied territories after some time A female voice singing, and a tribal dance beat which guides it. A classic Muslimgauze opening move. From then on its down the casbah - we hear tablas, sampled string instruments, and obscured voice samples. After the moment of rest we get with 'Sahara Head Dress', we then wake up back on the airplane, heading home, with 'System Virus Abuse 1,2,3' - a short burst of digital failure. Noted as such by Jones on the tape, this seventeen second piece is the sound of the aforementioned drone crashing. One down for the enemy.

Reanimation Library - Sound And Its Relation To Music

A radio piece by Andrew Beccone, founder of the Reanimation Library. Originally created for our series of broadcasts on NTS Radio.

Located in the Queens Museum, the Reanimation Library is a collection of books that "simultaneously prosaic and peculiar are relics of the rapidly receding 20th century". Chosen mostly for the images they contain, their visual content is scanned and archived online to create a fascinating archive of images from the recent past.

This radio piece focuses instead on the words and sounds of the Library. Five different sound pieces, each assembled in a unique way using recordings of people reading passages of text, synthesized speech and sounds found on records that came with books in the Library.

David Borden - Music For Amplified Keyboard Instruments

David Borden was is in the room where the pitch wheel was invented, when it happened. He was one of the first people to beta-test Bob Moog's Modular Synthesizer systems and MiniMoog instruments. His Earthquack Records imprint inspired Mimi Johnson to begin the legendary Lovely Records label with Robert Ashley. Borden formed the first all synthesizer ensemble, Mother Mallard's Portable Masterpiece Company, in 1969 after Bob Moog graciously lent out his prototype synthesizers and allowed them to be blown up and repaired repeatedly in the process of learning patching techniques.

If there was ever a missing link in American Minimalism, David Borden is that link. He not only composed, innovated and performed in the peak years of this imperative movement, but did so on his own terms, with a startling lack of recognition for his revelatory contributions to contemporary musical history.

David Borden, born Christmas Day 1938, in Boston, Massachusetts, is an American Minimalist composer and electronic music pioneer. Music for Amplified Keyboard Instruments is his unsung masterpiece, released in 1981 on the now defunct Red Records based in Holland. After Mother Mallard disbanded in 1978, many of Borden's solo compositions were not performed or recorded until long after the works had been completed. Music For Amplified Keyboard Instruments was released with little fanfare upon release, and suffered from seemingly limited distribution making the album an obscure classic from its earliest days. Those not lucky enough to obtain original pressings have had to settle for compressed YouTube clips and poor vinyl-to-digital transfers, while original copies of the album today are increasingly sparse and expensive on the used market. Spectrum Spools is proud to announce that 33 years after it's original release, and after searching the archives of Borden's private reel-to-reel tapes and recovering the one safety master known to exist, we are able to present this reissue of Music For Amplified Keyboard Instruments.

Music for Amplified Keyboard Instruments contains four pieces each utilizing three players, and six keyboard instruments. The opening "Etsy Point, Summer 1978" begins with a mournful, ominous mood and slowly blossoms into an immense and humid labyrinth of colorful buzzing textures and howling melodies. "The Continuing Story of Counterpoint" is a 12 part cycle for synthesizers, acoustic instruments and voice that was labored upon for over 11 years. Parts nine and six, included here, are miraculous achievements in prodigious playing technique, remarkable mosaic-like structure and aural magnitude, operating in the relative terrain of Steve Reich and his "Music for 18 Musicians" or some of the "Dervish" works of Terry Riley. Borden's compositions, however, are singular renderings of his own creative style, prying open new spaces of technique and expression that remained uninhabited by the minimalist composers of the day. The "Counterpoint" pieces here are rigidly arranged with breakneck key changes and intricate time signature manoeuvring. The resulting audio conjures kaleidoscopic patterns of beautiful melodies and compositional anatomy unparalleled in much of the American Minimalism we know. "Enfield in Winter" displays some of Borden's more ambient leanings, with slow morphing drones and gentle pad sounds that erupt into shimmering patterns backed by a grandiose chord progression. Though this wouldn't be the only solo release by David Borden, Music For Amplified Keyboards represents a veritable zenith in Borden's corpus - a radiant achievement in sonic elegance, experimentation, and ambitious composition technique, deeming it a work of the highest archival significance.

O Flynn - Tyrion/desmond S Empire

Collecting orders for repress !
The inaugral release of new record label Blip Discs. O'Flynn is a young artist who first achieved circulation around blogs and channels when he released his track 'Mantle' with record label Aliasizm. Since then, he has been busy completing work with various musicians and producers, the results being notably an official remix for Ella Eyre's song 'Deeper', and another of Miguel's 'Adorn' which was featured and uploaded by the popular Eton Messy channel. His work has enabled him to collaborate with some very respectable artists, but it is in his own original material that O'Flynn is more experimental, creating bold left-of-centre dance music that shows a distinct difference from his other releases. O'Flynn's core component for this release is the African influence. The tracks are spearheaded by his ability to re-contextualise and stylistically deliver his own sound for these dancefloor friendly cut.

Orestt is one of those talented producers with a sporadic discography that remains viciously underrated. Idle Hands
03.04.2017

Following the first chapter of Andy Mac'sDiving Birdseries, Idle Hands welcomes Italian producer Piezo into the fold with an EP that harks back to the smoky, dubwise ambience of some of the label's earliest releases.

Luca Mucci was a Bristol resident for a few years before returning to his native Milan, carving out an identity for his Piezo alias with a slew of dubstep-focused EPs on labels such as Artikal Music and Subaltern.

While on an Idle Hands skirmish stateside and playing on NY radio, one of The Kelly Twins dropped "Lume" and remarked on how 'Idle' it sounded, sparking the process that led to this record.

You can sense a link the early Kowton records on EP opener "Opeq", all monochromatic textures and taut, slow-stalking rhythms, but here those facets are interspersed with a unique melodic elegance that offsets the moody immersion of the track, eventually blooming out into an effervescent slice of slow-motion house music.

"Novemiluano" meanwhile displays Mucci's capabilities in handling broken beats, exercising a devastating restraint without compromising on presence or energy in crafting a stunning piece of meditative soundsystem music.
Pushing that foundational dub principle of space and minimalism even further, "Lume" closes the record out in stunning style with an intimate, glacial stepper that champions minute detail as much as looming gaps in the sound. With a peppering of micro-sampling atop a deathly bassweight march, it's a finely pointed arrow aimed right at the heart of Idle Hands, and we couldn't be happier to be releasing it.
