A new year evokes new emotions and new beginnings. 2013 see's the
Valentine Lovechild of somethinksounds arrive in the form of The Love
Below: a bespoke outlet enslaved by mystery, magic and tantric
emotions. Not much is yet known about what the future has in store,
but with 001 possessing one of the biggest tracks of recent times (3
million YouTube hits testify) from the most hyped producer around -
Cyril Hahn - it seems that big things await.The release will comprise of 500 copies of red vinyl accompanied bysome limited edition, screen printed merchandise which will be
available via www.thelovebelow.org.

While FETSUM is about to take the US by storm (after a California
tour, in March he's going to perform at the SXSW Festival in Austin
and at the pre-Oscars party at the Villa Aurora in LA) Sonar
Kollektiv releases four seminal remixes of his song "Letters From
Damascus". One of the centre pieces of his current album "The
Colors Of Hope" is not describing the political situation in Syria, it's
more of an autobiographical tale about the golden voiced German-
Eritean's life.
These four remixes are irrespective to this fact. What Stuttgart based
Johannes Brecht has done to the track is almost an imposition. A
six minutes long intro packed with an arsenal of hi hats culminates in
a shatter pated crescendo only to decay shortly after with an outro
nearly as long. A brave hearted stroke of genius! The man with a
Classical music education sounds like the new savior of techno. So
it's not really a surprise that none other than Henrik Schwarz
released Brecht's first original material on his own label Sunday
Music last year.
A total different approach is taken by Jérôme Caron aka Blackjoy.
The French, who is a devoted ambassador of emotional nu house
for almost a decade, reconstructs a super deep shuffle beat and
adds a stellar Jan Hammer-like synth line around FETSUM's vocals.

Heterotic are a group formed from husband and wife production team Mike Paradinas and Lara Rix-Martin. Mike is the boss and founder of Planet Mu, and a celebrated producer in his own right as µ-Ziq. Their debut release is a composite of four striking instrumental tracks and four unique collaborations with Gravenhurst, the musical pen-name of Nick Talbot, who is known for his dark, folk tinged output on Warp. They were brought together by a mutual friend who sensed potential in the pairing. For both Nick and Mike, the project is something of a departure. 'Love & Devotion' displays a love of hazy, dreamy 1980s influenced electronic pop shot through with the dynamics and space of modern dance music. The lyrics describe a world that is profoundly haunted by its past. While the allusions to a key event are cloaked in ambiguity, their echoes in the present are described in visceral and magical detail. The result is an album of tightly coiled melodies cloaked in an insomniac haze, subtle harmonic shifts and strong vocal counter-melodies conveying sweeping sketches of a troubled, neon world. The LP opens with 'Bliss' - an aquatic, dreamlike instrumental that sets the scene for the record. The tempo switches up for the 4/4 piano house of 'Blue Lights', a scene of nocturnal intrigue, with an ambiguous cat and mouse narrative delivered via Gravenhurst's insistent and memorable hook. 'Wartime' opens with a kick like a heavy heartbeat, the lyrics recalling a poignant, romantic scenario that in reality is just an idealised memory, modified and projected onto a half-imagined past. 'Robo Corp' - an evocative Vangelis-like instrumental - sustains that feeling, adding a subtle tension. As the blissful synthesised choirs build in the background, 'Devotion' presents a portrait of faded glamour and unfulfilled ambition. The mood is broken by the instrumental 'Knell' in which lines of synthesised guitar and harp intertwine until the track breaks into an unexpected coda, giving a sense of resolution. 'Slumber' takes things down to stumbling pace, the drum kicks buried in echo over a muted bassline, as the lyrics describe the solitude of empty streets in the early morning when the party is over and the detritus of a night's compulsion and excess are laid bare. 'Fanfare' is a suitable denouement with echoed 808 drums, mournful synthetic horns and a bassline that sound like a flickering opiated grime instrumental, finishing the album with a sense of bittersweet triumph.

26 year old Julien Perez was the former frontman of French band Adam Kesher (2007 - 2011). He writes and sings now in French. His songs are urban, ethereal, nocturnal soundscapes, infused with a sweaty « variété » touch. The way he builds his tracks is tense and sensual, reminding of Christophe and La Perversita lyrics, as much as of Border Community label and Invisible Conga People productions. Perez will release his first EP in February 2013 on Dirty. It has been produced by Pilooski (Discodeine, Tristesse Contemporaine), already supported by Laurent Garnier and Tim Sweeney.

A brand new chapter in the famous edits series from this label that wishes to remain unknown. MF surprises with his flourfilling Tribute To Gotye and don't underestimate the Misread edit on the flip, it's a big release!

With Reality On the Horizon, Let's Play House continues to prove it's not afraid to push the boundaries of house music while simultaneously broadening the spectrum of talent its roster embodies. The EP features four tracks by two Los Angeles-based outfits who have been around for a few years, primarily as taste-maker DJs—Cosmic Kids and Fingerpaint, a.k.a. Tyler Blake of Classixx.
The record kicks off with the one collaborative composition, 'Manteiga.' And, like the S. American butter it's named after, it's a silky smooth jumble of disco samples and whimsical piano riffs, bright and brassy horns, and a bass-heavy melody that evokes the quintessential French house of the 90s. Following the party that 'Manteiga' started is Fingerpaint's 'Change Yr Mind,' a slightly more somber affair that oozes melancholy from start to finish.
The flip finds Cosmic Kids getting deep and heady while not losing their penchant for cranking out groovy boogies that are impossible to switch off repeat. 'Higgs Boson'—which is just as ethereal, spacy, and, yes, cosmic as you would expect a song named after the theoretical particle would be—functions as the duo's exploration of their darker side. 'Whisper Softly,' on the other hand, is the closest you'll get to the house version of a 90s R&B ballad of TLC proportions.
It's rare to find someone able to naturally create music that can both pluck every single heart string and get your body moving all night long, but Cosmic Kids and Fingerpaint somehow deliver just that—and knock it out of the park!—on their EP. Blast off to the stars with Reality On the Horizon!

When I was 18 I had those albums you'd escape with. When we were making the Footprintz record that was really our aim - to produce an album that kids can listen and escape to'.
Released March 2013 on inimitable label Visionquest, Footprintz debut album 'Escape Yourself' delivers on a level that many dance LP's aspire to reach but few attain; a 'proper' album with each song taking you deeper and deeper into what is an accomplished and well-rounded body of work.
Every journey has its beginning, and as the opening chords of 'The Things That Last Forever' give way to a hypnotic bassline, you know you're on your way. Basslines form a key part of the Footprintz sound, acting as an anchor from which vocal melodies, synth lines and warm chords weave around in an often psychedelic style. Debut single, 'Utopia', exemplifies this ethic with its synth flirtations and optimistic vocal musings adding layers upon a solid core.
As Clarian and Addy say, 'We wanted to work around a concept of escaping the confused years of growing up. 16-25, those are the years where you're figuring yourself out, going through the motions of meeting different people and finding new things'. Tracks like 'Uncertain Change' and recent single 'Dangers of The Mouth' tackle this subject head on, focusing on the insecurities that arise from growing up. 'Zanzibar' takes a lighter approach, touching on the innocence of youth that brings with it, its own simple pleasures.
What becomes apparent throughout 'Escape Yourself' is a real craftsmanship to Footprintz's songwriting. Each track reveals a little more on each listen, aided by the slick production work, done predominantly by the guys themselves in their Montreal bunker studio full of analogue equipment, odd instruments and a fridge laden with 'special brownies'; which goes some way to explain a noirish-haze that permeates through the album.
Having met at an afterparty aged 15, Clarian North & Adam Hunter have experienced most of their adult life together. 'Escape Yourself' distills their experiences, wraps them in a warm analogue fuzz and shares them with the listener. You join them on their journey, and deep down they hope it helps you shape your own.

In the 9th release of Greece's Echovolt, Simoncino meets the legendary vocalist Julian Jonah! The result is a shimmering house track full of emotions, reminiscent of Larry Heard, Ten City or even Electribe 101. The dub mix of 'Where Did You Go' pitches all of the track's elements into a different level - merely a weapon in the hands of the DJ.

Romanthony "Let Me Show You Love" (2013 Remixes)
Following on from the much hyped (plays on Tong/Mosca/Todda T shows) and big selling re-works of "Bring U Up", Glasgow Underground dust off "Let Me Show You Love", arguably Romanthony's biggest club hit (outside of "One More Time", and hand it over to Gerd, Oliver $, Gavin Herlihy & Laura Jones, Mia Dora and label owner Kevin McKay for some 2013 touches. This 12' features Oliver $, Gavin Herlihy & Laura Jones and Mia Dora.
Since 2011 and his ubiquitous, monstrous Beatport #1, "Doin' Ya Thing", Berlin's Oliver $ has been a big deal. There is an art to making records that are so effective yet at the same time so simple, and when it comes to putting them together, Oliver $ is one of world's best. For this remix, he doesn't mess with the formula and fixes Roman's paean to lost love to one serious tribal groove. Add a system shaking baseline and some special fx and there you have it. Simple. Effective. Massive.
Whilst Gavin Herlihy's rise to fame has been a slow burn, rising up since 2006 with solid releases on labels like Cocoon, Cadenza, Get Physical and Buzzin Fly through to Visionquest, Crosstown Rebels and Culprit before ending up with the killer "Get Loose" on Leftroom, Laura Jones arrived with a bang in 2011 thanks to "Love In Me" her killer organ anthem. Here they team up and take Roman's vocals on a jagged ride through the darker sides of house, a perfect 6am mix.
From their breakthrough remix for Roots Manuva at the end of 2011, Glasgow's latest production stars Mia Dora had a busy 2012. A stand-out track on Jaymo & Andy George's Moda Black compilation lead to a full EP for Moda Black. Their single release on Glasgow's hip High Sheen label has been played by djs from Jackmaster to Seth Troxler and they have remixes due for Parker and latest Crosstown Rebels signing, Walker & Royce. Their version of "Let Me Show You" sounds like Maurice Donovan remixing an R&S classic, all 909 rhythms and a larger than life rave hook.

Planningtorock announces 'Misogyny Drop Dead EP', which will be digitally released on International Women's Day, Friday 8th March 2013 and in shops on 12" vinyl on March 11th.
This is the second 12" release on Human Level Recordings, following on from the acclaimed 'Patriarchy Over & Out' 12" (also available, HL001).

Original Cultures presents Blackjob 'Trashdub' 12", a vinyl release that compiles tracks from the original and remix EPs of the same name (available digitally). This release includes three original tracks and three remixes on vinyl complete with full colour sleeve and artwork by Paper Resistance. Featured remixers include Munich's Danny Scrilla (Cosmic Bridge, Civil Music), Bristol's Sam Binga (formerly Baobinga, Build Recordings) and Dublin's T-Woc (Alphabet Set). The 12" drops late February 2013 and comes with a free download of both the original and remix EPs in digital formats (11 tracks in total).

On side A we have three tracks of modern day dub from Blackjob, the latest project of famed Italian bass player Mannaman. The music takes inspiration from dub's Jamaican roots and its modern day offshoots and mutations. 'Rise Again' features beautiful vocals by Suz. The whole thing evokes the best of Bristol circa Massive Attack's heydays.

On side B we have three remixes that showcase dub's modern diaspora. Danny Scrilla takes Rise Again into dubstep territories, with ten-ton heavy bass and snapping snares, while Sam Binga turns the original into a meditative jungle roller. T-Woc keeps MMD in more traditional dub territories, with extra lazers.

Blackjob is the latest project from famed Italian bassist Mannaman, a musician who over the last 20 years has worked with renowned Italian artists and collectives such as the Isola Posse All Stars and Casino Royale as well as Howie B and Tim Holmes from Death In Vegas.
