Norwegian/Mexican Carmen Villain is the latest signing on Smalltown Supersound. She has spent the last year working on her debut album, resulting in a tempestuous, psychedelic and dreamlike set of songs with a defiantly DIY underground free-rock sound. Mostly recorded in a former nuclear bunker in Oslo, half of the album has been produced by Carmen herself, the other half by Emil Nikolaisen (Serena Maneesh), with one track a collaboration/co-production with fellow Norwegian cosmic hero Prins Thomas (who has also sequenced the album).

Carmen - who freely admits to an obsession with American avant weirdos Sun City Girls - draws on a lineage of sprawling, taboo-busting lo-fi rock: Sonic Youth, Royal Trux, Broadcast, Bikini Kill and The Stooges. But equally she admires the cut 'n' paste productions of J Dilla, Wu-Tang Clan and English avant garde post-punkers This Heat.

The album is being released via Smalltown Supersound in March 2013. Another 12" is in the process with a remix by
Optimo.

Alex Barck is known for participating at as many parties as possible simultanously. Now he invites for the very first time in his career to his own and personal bash. To the island La Reunion in the Indian Ocean to be exact. That's where he settled with his entire family for a whole year since last summer to complete his probably most ambitious work ever: His debut solo album. The fist guest to be received is Pete Josef from Bristol (one half of The White Lamp), who wrote the lyrics for 'Re-Set' and lends his voice to it naturally. A voice that suits perfectly Barcks twisted but always highly accessible productions. As a DJ who lives for the dancefloor Barck comes up with a track that make your legs shake and - in the second part - your hands raise. To assign the talents of newcomer Hannes Fischer to do a remix is a clever move. The latest wunderkind of the Berlin techno/house scene has an impressive sensitiveness for nuances like only very few have nowadays. In his rework he squeezes the essence out of 'Re- Set' and fills it rich in content into a flacon that spreads somehow the odor of lavender. Until the release of the album 'Reunion' there will be further three 12 coming out of the holiday residence Barck. Stay tuned! In the meantime there still will be DJing in selected locations, work for the project Prommer & Barck (a second album is in the making), A&R managing for Sonar Kollektiv and of course active support of Jazzanova.

Max Essa is a producer who has been shipping over his extremely coveted brand of disco and balearica from the land of the Rising Sun for some time now. Having had a long running string of sought after releases on labels such as Bear Funk, Nang, to Is It Balearic, Max is now making his Needwant debut with 'How Do You Feel' which includes an awesome remix from Kim Ann Foxman.

An outstanding highlight in this year's late summer is presented by the stars of the Berlin Label Supdub. For this year's first time the DJ Duo Heinrichs & Hirtenfellner (also well known as Alfred Heinrichs & Sascha Braemer) is producing together again. Resulting in the EP Sad Sunday, they created a true appetizer for their upcoming album. However this is not all to the new EP. In addition to Heinrichs & Hirtenfellner's new song, Dan Caster & Sascha Braemer as well as René Bourgeois & Andy Kohlmann created their very own interpretation of this marvellous Sunday after hour feeling disguised in a song. Their work will also be found on the new EP. The new song creation Sad Sunday has already been successfully performed by the Duo on various gigs. Thus, the idea developed to eternalize the track(s) respectively as original(s) together on an own disk. Listening to this good piece of music, the intention of the creators will soon be crystal clear - to transfer the well known feeling that arouses after the party stops and you slowly come back down to earth, realizing that you left the wonderful party dreamland behind and are now heading back towards your daily routine. Furthermore the track tries to foment the desire for the next weekend by being endowed with deep and exhaustive vocals. The Sad Sunday EP is implementing its theme on all levels, providing a formidable sound for a frolic sound pleasure.

Darkstar first coalesced in the underground, electronic thrum of London's nascent grime and dubstep sphere in the mid 2000s, growing from attending the now-fabled early FWD club nights to releasing a pair of game-changing 12' singles on Kode 9's fledgling Hyperdub label. What followed was a fitful and productive period culminating in a discarded album's worth of tracks, the crucial introduction of vocalist James Buttery to the fold and, finally, the release of their debut full-length 'North', to wide acclaim. By this time Darkstar had aptly been framed as a very intriguing proposition, one of the first proper 'bands' to rise from the UK's current electronic underground.
The band decamped to a house in the West Yorkshire countryside, secluding themselves from the distractions of London and writing as a trio for the first time. Ultimately, 'News From Nowhere' is a reflection of the time they spent together there. Says Young, 'Every place warrants a story. There are moments in people's everyday lives, no matter how subtle, that can be documented and talked about in great detail. The instances spiral and ascend and take on their own course, altering the perception of how even the slightest change in a day can be felt deeply.'
Eventually proceedings moved from the band's makeshift digital studio in their house to producer Richard Formby's (Sonic Boom / Hood / Wild Beasts) dusty studio enclave, full of tape machines and analogue synthesizers. The songs that had been inspired by English prog rock and obscure techno and created as loops based on the band's affinity for hip hop production ('literally everything from Lex Luger to Geoff Barrow') grew into sublimely arranged works. In the end, the album arrived at an altogether singular existence, delving into the moments between moments and elevating them to epic, kaleidoscopic heights

Massive, hard to find mix, full 9.27 min edit / quality 1 sided 12"

Knox is the band brainchild of brother-sister duo Nic and Eliza Coolidge. Hailing from Boston and New York, the siblings released their second EP, Here, on December 3rd, and it's a big step forward for the band. Formed less than two years ago, in March 2011, KNOX finds themselves working with the likes of John Tejada and Kuxxan SUUM on this release, and the outcome is stunning.
Here is five-song set full of ice and echoes. It runs as close to the third rail of impersonation, but flies away so quickly that Knox sounds contextual and perfectly fresh. The influences from James Blake is clear: the swooping, bomber bass and half-timey compressed dub beats; Here could also easily be an inventive B-side to the latest How to Dress Well album. But, with the limited scale, interspersed remixes and foundling status in the scene, I'd say it's likely a more impressive feat.
The EP as a whole is desolate. Expansive spaces filled with cold little beats and vocal washes, exploring in the course of five songs an icescape aesthetic with a sense of place usually reserved for full-length albums. The remixes blend so seamlessly that I didn't even realize they were during my first, casual listen. On every track, Eliza's voice is whispery but not weak, wandering roughly to its soulful fullest on all tracks just before fading into production obscurities. Knox calls themselves an "electro-acoustic project," and indeed it is impossible to tell where the line between the two elements exists.

The next installment of Manc institution El Diablo's Social Club's 'To Rack & Ruin' edits series comes from Preston lad Paul Watson AKA Watson.Paul has been a friend of the El Diablo's crew for many years since working at Fat City one of Manchesters' finest record shops which is now sadly defunct.The discovery of the edit however was due to Cottam playing it at a paperecordings party in Manchester early this year.Side A is a splendid edit of the massive Millie Jackson track which was sampled for the Carl Craig remix of Tom Trago's Use Me Again track.
Side B is a sleazy slo number with some lovely layered beats.Early DJ support comes from Cottam, Crazy P, Eric Duncan and PBR Streetgang.This release is limited to 300 and is hand stamped, sprayed and numbered.

Mary Anne Hobbs and Audiojack to name a few. Not to mention an increasingly busy calendar, which notably included performances at Glade, and Dimensions.
Returning for his second release on the grass roots inspired Blah Blah Blah Records, Blacksmif delivers his biggest release to date with two tracks of simmering beauty and
dance oor elegance. Lorca completes the package with his characteristically smooth, and
essential, dynamism.Opening Track How The Fly Saved The River' shufes into existence with a determined
percussive energy that is punctuated by luxuriously smooth ecks of melody, all of which
lure you towards the richly soulful main vocal and exhilarating breakdown. Kang's Odyssey'
is a much more sensual affair, with its warm languid melody casually strolling towards a
wistfully entwined vocal duet.

Duke Dumont's "The Giver" off of his For Club Play Only Pt. 2 EP is a floor burner whose hook is just as addicting as its deep, dark bassline. It has the same sort of crossover appeal that has lifted Disclosure from the underground into the pop mainstream in the UK, yet it hasn't caught on virally in the same way that many of Disclosure's tunes have. None of this matters to Belgian jacking techno
and underground stalwart Tim Van de Meutter aka Locked Groove, however. Mr. Van de Meutter has effectively repurposed Duke Dumont's original for the dark underground soundsystems of London and Europe with his remix of "The Giver," which is why it's no surprise that Scuba even included it in his recent mix for FACT Magazine. This remix is a techno affair that takes the hook from the
original and adds a jacking 4/4 beat to it, making the original even more emotionally raw than it already is. Expect this remix to be rinsed out a lot over the coming months. Meggy has teamed up with Chopstick & Johnjon to produce some absolute beauties for her "Hide 4 Love" EP on Suol. Her amazing, distinctive voice finally gets the stage it deserves. "Anything You Can" has already been tried and tested on the dancefloors of the world and came back with the predicates "highly valuable", "precious" and "dancefloor bombing". The title track of the EP, "Hide 4 Love" is more of a slow jam - an emotional showcase of Meggy's talent to connect with the listener on an intimate level. The B1 features Chopstick & Johnjon, and the three of them are one hell of a team! "Curious" is a late night groover - clicking percussion, a brooding, pushing bassline and ecstatic piano chords, all accompanying Meggy's vocals perfectly.
But that's not all, folks: Fritz Kalkbrenner joined Meggy in the studio between releasing his album and starting his tour. A combination that instantly works. "Better" is the knot that ties all the strings of this release together. A wonderful slow Hip-Hop jam. Fritz's love for Soul and Hip Hop is an excellent match for Meggy's groovier side that she already brought to effect on her feature with Till Von Sein, "Get Over Yourself". The tune to round off the "Hide 4 Love" EP is one that you will find yourself coming back to again and again.
And still this release is just "the tip of the iceberg" that sounds so promising already. These tracks are surely the best way to spend your time until Meggy's full debut drops on Suol.

We are proud to welcome aboard Valentina Black with her debut vinyl EP "I found a Blue Heart".
Valentina Black is a singer, songwriter, composer, hammond player and pianist. She sang and played in a recording session (Freedom Jazz Dance) with the legendary Frank Zappa's drummer Jimmy Carl Black.
Valentina Black's musical roots are based on Jazz, Spiritual and Funk, she then approached djing and the electronic music's environment.
She also expresses her passion for visual arts, painting her own beautiful label artwork for the release.

The key track, "Blue Heart", is a great piece of deep house song where Valentina wisely uses her voice creating a texture of rhythmical elements and developing a very interesting and peculiar weaving of vocal choruses which, arranged by the use of chords and pads, gives a romantic and emotional tension to the song.

The B-side of the package composed of the tracks "Dancin' Delicious" and "Yo Soy Tu Amigo", concentrates more on the typical tech-house percussive elements (such as vocal elements and drums), an experimental use of vocal parts and very functional and deep sub basslines to create two amazing dancefloor killers.

Aninha and Antonela Giampietro (Warung Beach Club, 24bit) take the key track to a more minimal, deep dimension while Less Hate (digital only) (Kindisch, GrooveOn), pump it up with some cool grooves and a highly functional bassline!

Despite antagonizing copyright claims on Youtube, empty threats from fake lawyers, and tough-guy chest-thumping from boastful Belgians, "The Heat" flips the dial to "fuck you" and lays it out for The People to just enjoy without all the elitist posturing. With that said, the "IMPROPER TRAX" begin!

The Fiakun label teams up with the highly talented Piek, who together with Samuel Fitch & Mianyo delivers some superb disco inflected house in the shape of 'Hemingway'... Fiakun's last release saw the Spanish label drop the excellent 'Voodoo' by Mexican producer Cesar Coronado, a record which caught the attention of Djs such as Huxley, Maceo Plex & Ralph Lawson. Now the hotly tipped imprint returns with a brand new single, this time delivered courtesy of the excellent Piek. Piek hails from the North of Spain and has over the last few years become one of the countries most promising and prolific producers dropping releases on labels such as Azari, Cray1 LabWorks, Inmotion and Paulatine, the label he manages with Uner and Baum. Now he joins forces with Mianyo and vocalist Samuel Fitch to create this standout new release for Fiakun. The A side features the original version of 'Hemingway', a richly produced, disco inflected house outing that fuses warm electronic bass, retro keys and rolling percussion to create a stunning soundbed for Fitch's soulful and intense vocals, quality stuff. The flipside sees 'Hemingway' handed over to remixes M.V.I.P. better known to the world as Mathias Vogt and Ian Pooley, who deliver a version that journeys into techier territory with its tight drum programming and old school house influences working a treat. Fiakun have delivered another superb single, further cementing there position as a label to watch...

As a follow up to the last years 'Radio Anatomy' we're excited to present the 'Last Day Here EP' by Brioski. It's a stellar effort from the talented Italian and we're all feeling that he's really come into his own with this one.Brioski's inspiration spans Hiphop, Funk, Soul, Disco, Chicago House & Techno, edging towards Balearic / psychedelic atmospheres with deep percussive roots and old-school tendencies. Combine this with some Italian originality and a love for vintage gear and you're halfway there.
