Our next mixtape features a superb, tight blend of some of the very best tracks to fly out of the speakers at the Cherry Moon Club. At the helm we have DJ Ghost, spinning the grooves to take us on a journey through the ages, through the genres, from twisted acid concepts to hypnotic trance and gut busting hardcore. Ghost aka Bjorn Wendelen has been a stalwart for us at Bonzai since the very early days. He’s delivered several cuts for us over the years and has branched out with his own Ghoststyle brand with great success. The famous Cherry Moon was and remains one of the biggest names in Belgian club-life, with 30 years of embracing club culture. Since the start in 1991, they have brought the best techno, hard-trance and house to the scene. During the 90's and early 00's, Cherry Moon was the place to be for clubbers from all over Belgium, France, the Netherlands and even other European countries. Housed on classic K7 tape, this comp features a host of tracks from the likes of DJ Ghost, Insider, Body-Shock, DJ Looney Tune, Jones & Stephenson, Push, Blue Alphabet, Final Analysis, Joyrider, Dreamland and more. CAIVA exploded onto the scene last year with her folk, jazz and classical blend of hard-hitting techno on Take Me Higher on Lobster Theremin. Now the just-outside-of-Munich artist follows up one of the singles of the year with a complete body of work exploring high velocity sounds and experiences, and comes complete with two wicked remixes from Parisian producer Trudge and Julian Muller.

‘Vigour’ is an intergalactic, bass-driven jam utilising CAIVAs ghostly, folk-like vocals to haunting effect. A tale of two stories; the majority of the track is destined for the club, whilst the breakdown provides a pop-fuelled moment of contemplation. Emotional and powerful escapism. ‘Take Me Higher’ follows this depth of inspiration with a blend of euphoria and sadness with a high power cut of trance-techno that’s as devastating as it is beautiful.

Julian Muller is first up on remix duties as he takes on ‘Vigour’; a typically arcade-inspired trip through the modern trance-techno sound and the high-speed aesthetic of the nineties, before Trudge closes with an ethereal cut of typically textured rhythms within an anxious soundscape.

Elmo Sarpaniemi (El Mono) and Roope Karhunen (Kaltstam) met at a local Helsinki radio station in 2005, and linked up soon again in 2018 at an afterparty. Fueled by their mutual passion towards only the best genres ever they squeezed out a blend of goa trance, techno, electro, breakbeats and sort of IDM. This steamy session gave birth to the track, “Positive”.

The other ER original ”2G”, sounds more like traditional goa trance, but still… it hardly is. Clocking the rhythm around 140 bpm like the opening track, it kicks in the club doors with a robust bassline, enchanting the cultured dancer with its peculiar melodies, leaving the purists absolutely cold evicting them for a cigarette. Because who gives an oink about purists, right?

This record is also fortunate enough to be blessed with two spectacular remixes. Neri J’s approach is a more dancefloor friendly, yet aetheric version of “Positive”, but don’t get it twisted. It still possesses something very psychedelic and raw. Ilev Luna wraps up the release nicely with his touch, that sounds like an interpretation of modern techno, but in fact this just could be a journey deep into your psyche. BOOM! This slaps.

Apron Records has been instrumental in shaping the current landscape of contemporary electronic music coming out of the U.K. since 2014. After almost a decade of pushing their unique vision has made the Apron Records imprint one of the most in-demand labels in most independent record stores. Now more than 45 releases deep in their journey, Apron Records have teamed up with Patta Soundsystem to work on their first various artists release and to celebrate this monumental milestone, both camps have collaborated to create a clothing capsule to accompany this release. After working with the artist formerly known as Funkineven on ‘The Wave’ late last year, it was only right to showcase the diverse talents behind this movement.

Sharing a drawing board with Patta for the first time with Apron Records, together they have created a Trucker Cap and a Graphic T-Shirt that echo the racing theme of the whole project. Better Together is the slogan that runs throughout the entire collaboration, stressing how unity makes us stronger as individuals. Artwork for the record has been provided by Amsterdam based artist Jim Klok. His unique Acetone printing technique has now been immortalised on this LP, juxtaposing vintage cars with checkered racing flags to create a dynamic cover that would be right at home in a picture frame as well as a record bin.

System Olympia’s ‘Passi Mai’ is a beautiful 80’s inspired driving riddim layered with her own vocals that wouldn’t be out of place in an arcade or a sticky nightclub floor. Followed up by ‘Leven’ by Brassfoot, we get a wobbler from the NTS regular. Layed with Jamaican vocal samples and audacious arpeggiated bleeps, Leven is a soulful approach to techno tropes that have been bouncing around Brassfoot’s head. Shamos’ 737363 is a cryptic masterpiece. With dreamy pads as a backdrop for shuffling drum beats, euphoric sweeps and dynamically designed synthesis, this closes off the themes explored in the first half of the record.

Side B kicks off with J M S Khosah’s contribution to the record titled ‘Lessons’ which is a dancefloor filler, adorned with glamorous percussion, vocal samples and syncopated stabs ontop of a driving 4x4 kick pattern. Kicking things into 6th gear is a club-ready production from London's most soulful selector Shy One. Groovy basslines and a 2-step riddim make ‘Candy Floss’ an ode to the grimey and the glittery sides of London nightlife. This project champions one of the people that have been pivotal in the success of the label, Steven Julien whose track E46 is an emotional journey through his synth-laden East London studio. Bookending the project are two compositions from Compton’s-own AshTreJinkins. Showcasing his abilities to approach the project from both an ambient and a pure beat-making perspective in order to hold the whole project together.

microcastle’s second offering of 2022 welcomes Mulya back to the label for a new EP. Based in Budapest, Hungarian artist Mulya brings an inventive approach to his brand of electronic composition. Throughout his varied discography, he touches on disparate themes and sounds, straddling a divide between intergalactic design and indie-inspired beats, often mixing both into one amorphous, unclassifiable sound of his own. As a favourite of Ame, Dixon, Fideles, Frankey & Sandrino, Innellea, Trikk and more, Mulya made his microcastle debut in July of 2020 with ‘Chrome Extra’. The five-track showcase was a prime example of the Hungarian’s creative attitude, ultimately leading to 2021 projects via Innervisions, TAU and his own Complaint Kulture imprint. Having gotten the year underway with ‘#SENDBRO’, a joint effort with fellow countryman and Complaint Kulture partner Sobek, Mulya makes a welcome return to microcastle with ‘REM’.

Picking up on the themes he brought to his label debut, Mulya has created five new tracks rich with spirit and allusion. Beginning with the panoramic synth textures and haunted minimalism of ‘REM’, an unexpected shade is revealed through wailing horn-like drones and celestial sonics. Evoking a dystopian style ecstasy, this Echonomist and Innellea favourite proves once again that the most astute artists often find a way to the finish line, where the whole is greater than the sum of its parts. Meanwhile, ‘Inner Circle’ plunges us into the wormhole, collapsing under its own gravity as momentum builds and pyrotechnic synths steal the air, eventually breaking into a hyperventilating helium rush of clattering percussion and rolling rhythmic structures.

Moving forward with ‘Free Falling’, Mulya sustains an understated yet confident club energy. Dark rebounding rhythms and grungy basslines set the course for snatches of disembodied voices and satellite-like bleeps. These echoes of extra-dimensional sound salvage bring forth the unshackled mind melt of the aptly titled ‘Astral’. Mulya’s relentless curiosity for rhythmic and harmonic experimentation basks in retro-radiance here, as a delirious blur of broken beats, metallic fragments and acid-laced machine funk emerge from their sci-fi saloon slo-mo showdown. Rounding out the collection and sitting on a modern psychedelic perch of its own are the eternally fresh aesthetics and eager optimism of ‘Cosmos’, a feel-good jaunt that breaks into a rich textural rain of melodic colour, where euphoria awaits with arms raised and eyes closed.

The Psychedelic Romance experience is birthed, combining future-facing electronic music, art and healing. The venture is a collaboration between former Trouw & De School resident JP Enfant, energy practitioner & artist Cuevawolf and artist & label manager Maren Monika Brombeiss. It will offer an immersive sensory experience to its audience via an event series and label, with music produced at 432hz, a frequency known to uplift emotional wellbeing.

The trio linked in Amsterdam last year. JP had been previously running Psychedelic Romance events at the legendary Trouw, an opportunity he used to explore the musical terrain linking techno, UK bass and ambient. Over the years, the cream of the underground scene was invited to play, from Pearson Sound to boundary-pushing dubstep/bass producer 2562. He met Cuevawolf by chance mid-way through 2020, after fate would have the Mexican artist “stuck” in the Dutch capital during the pandemic. The click was instantaneous. Seasoned music industry professional and yoga practitioner Maren Monika completed the triangle. Together they seek to combine their passion for cutting-edge electronic music with consciousness-raising events and healing.
The label strand of Psychedelic Romance comes to life via JP Enfant’s ‘Somewhere Else EP’, a veritable musical Rubik’s Cube encompassing techno, ambient and bass. The five-track work includes a remix of lead track ‘Muzieklokaal’ from Bristol’s acclaimed experimental producer LCY, who reworks the playful original into a dynamic pastiche of industrial breaks and techno.

Dubbed a “local legend” of the Amsterdam scene by RA, JP Enfant has built up a credible reputation with gigs across Europe including Berghain, Melt Festival and fabric. His nuanced approach to techno has seen releases on Planet X, a.r.t.less and DGTL Records.

The conscious ethos of the project runs through every thread of Psychedelic Romance. Alongside the music being produced at 432hz, a frequency believed to support a calm body and mind, at upcoming Psychedelic Romance events, Cuevawolf will play the crystal singing bowls, which will transition the night from an uplifting sound healing session into an immersive electronic rave experience, led by JP. “Our goal is to create purposeful healing frequencies through music and art that ultimately raises and harmonizes our audience’s vibration,” Cuevawolf explains. “The idea is to marry electronic music and spirituality providing a safe space for transcendental and self-healing experiences that evolve onto a dancefloor.”

Psychedelic Romance hosted an intimate family and friends gathering during ADE week at Amsterdam’s Pamela, with music led by JP and emerging Amsterdam selector DJ Corridor. On the label front, other artists slated for appearances on Psychedelic Romance include Dutch techno artist Mary Lake and ascendant Austrian talent Arthur Robert.

Imagine!’ by Overlords of the UFO was a US progressive trance hit globally at the time of its original release in 1994, holding the number one spot on many underground dance charts for several weeks. Mixmag dubbed it “wicked” and other relevant magazines also gave it the highest accolades, e.g. XLR8R “deserving of the highest praise”. Overlords of the UFO ‘Imagine!’ is a collaboration between Anthony Barker and Lynn Serafinn, both trained musicians and analogue synth aficionados. Side A ‘Whirling Thru Time & Space Mix’ was inspired by a poem of 60’s cult sci-fi author Fredric Brown, and ‘UFO Mix’ is a faster tempo remix of the former. Side B ‘Deeply Hypnotic Mix’ is a downtempo remix incorporating some world music elements, and ‘Surfin’ UFO’ was a very limited licensed track that Billboard Magazine described positively and humorously as “campy and kitschy”.

One of Europe’s most popular queer parties launches its record label, showcasing the residents who made Adonis such a cult, must-attend event. The four-track ‘ADONIS 001’ EP is released on 25 February, featuring four tracks from residents Nyra and Wilson Phoenix, representing the different music styles experienced across both rooms at their infamous party which ended its four-year residency at The Cause with a bang on New Year’s Day this year.

Long-term resident Nyra delivers both A-Side tracks, presenting the uplifting, main-room house sound of Adonis. Opening with ‘Used To Love Me’ which evokes classic early New York house with its sultry “you used to love me, basic lover” vocal refrain alongside deep atmospheric beats and hypnotic saxophone sounds. ‘Visions’ sparkles with vibrant electro beats which bounce and shimmer throughout, combined with the Italo house inspired synth chords for an anthemic track perfect for peak-time dance-floors.

Resident Wilson Phoenix, known for delivering the faster paced, darker sound of Adonis, provides both B-Side tracks. As the BPM rises, the vibe gets harder. The thumping yet euphoric ‘Dash Und’ flexes its muscles from the out, with its punchy 909 matched by robotic synths and nostalgic acid and rave influences. ‘K-12’ ups the intensity; a sweat-soaked techno stomper with stabbing hi-hats which make for the ideal heads down cut.

With 2022 comes some much needed green shoots of positivity and recovery for creative folk all around the world. For us, in spite of the constant hovering in pandemic purgatory, neither here nor there, the tides appear to be turning in our favour. The added spare time of being in a state of clopen, combined with the healing twinkle in our artists’ eyes, has meant that we’ve worked on some of our favourite projects yet, and this next one – our 7th foray into the vinyl medium – is no exception. As you’ve probably noticed, here at CV, we like to reserve physical releases for when the artist is ready to present something truly special; a magnum opus of sorts. A divine fusion of old-skool and new-school breaks, acid, trance, and techno, Beyond The Forest is exactly that. One of our oldest friends, initially releasing on the label in 2016 under his now retired alias Sire, Selected Dream Memories (real name Côme Arthur) presents his most energetic, well-executed body of work to date. Slingshotting through celestial fields and bounding over flickering, emotion-drenched melodic elements; driven by zigzagging breakbeat percussion and an explosive low end, Arthur perfectly deepens our impression of his sonic niche. As always with Arthur’s productions, whether it be on the dance floor or beyond, each four of the releases’ tracks are sure to electrify, daze, enthral, captivate, and inspire. Remixing the spine-tingling acid track Sector 4, we have Sydney’s emerging authority on breaks, bass, and more: Mincy. She elevates the track from a more reserved and rhythm-based one to a feel good closer that’ll make the floor absolutely erupt in a breakbeat frenzy. On behalf of rediscovery records, it is with great excitement that we announce the Hyaline EP Extended by Human Mesh Dance. New York native and multi-talented media artist Taylor Deupree, was the man behind this electronic act. Taylor was a fixture in the Northeastern American electronic music scene in so many ways. From art design for Instinct Records entire first decade of discography to being a part of legendary live acid techno act Prototype 909. He was also one half of the highly regarded Seti ambient project and by the late 1990’s thru today, he has run 12k records to over 100+ ambient releases from artists around the world. rediscovery focuses in on his debut Hyaline EP from 1993 from early on in his career (which we added 2 additional Human Mesh Dance tracks never on vinyl). A post-rave audio glimpse into the bedroom sound of the Aquasphere; Taylor’s home studio that helped give birth to the sound of Instinct Ambient. Chill out on the verge of the new millennium. Spacey melodics, futuristic visions and sci-fi themes were the inspiration for a new brand of deeper sounds that challenged listeners on couches instead of warehouses. The analogue verging on a digital sunrise having some re-define their definition of ‘what is trance?

After releasing his first Album Liber Novus' on Form Music, followed by 'Liber Secretus' and 'Liber Tertius' on his Praedikat imprint, Christian Hornbostel now presents 'Liber Prodigiorum' (Book of Prodigies). Hornbostel's previous releases have garnered support from major players like John Digweed or Richie Hatwin and are regularly popping up on Joris Voorn's Spectrum. Liber Prodigiorum confirms the full diversity of Hornbostel’s various strands and his interesting look on techno makes it a worthwhile listen, especially if you're fond of the progressive sweeping club floors.
