Martin Hannett & Steve Hopkins - All Sorts Of Heroes

From the shrapnel of the unlikely collision point where Mancunian post-punk royalty collides with sci-fi cinema and art house animation, this obscure diamond in the rough shines a new light on the Northern DIY era providing disc detectives with a whole new punk funk perspective. Recorded in 1976 by Invisible Girls' Steve Hopkins and Martin Hannett for a truly bizarre stop-motion animation called All Sorts OF Heroes, this hard edged funk instrumental theme reveals another side to this versatile production team joining the hidden dots between Hannett's own discoid experiments with ESG, Gyro, A Certain Ratio and the mythical Afro Express recordings from the same year. Embodying as much in common with 1970's bass heavy European funk soundtracks by bands like Goblin and Placebo, as the expected parallels with John-Cooper Clarke's backing tracks or early Happy Mondays, this early 1976 session is the perfect example of Hannett and Hopkins' under-the-radar artistic commissions working to a storyboard brief in what has now become recognised as a fertile arena for lost filmic funk.

Drawing historic parallels with Leeds based Graeme Miller and Steve Shill's home recorded DIY soundtracks for The Moomins animation and accentuating the connection between Manchester based animation house Cosgrove Hall (Dangermouse/Chorlton And The Wheelies) and it's employees Bernard Sumner, John Squire and members of Gerry And The Holograms, this lost recording adds kudos to a quirky micro-niche and reveals another dimension to Northern anti- pop's snarky personality.

Pressed here by Finders Keepers for the first time on vinyl, in close accordance with the wishes of Steve Hopkins himself, this custom-composed track originally appeared on the short film by Rick Megginson and Steve Hughes which was shown at the Ottawa International Animation Festival in 1976 where it might have otherwise remained, preserved in an 8mm film box up until now. As relevant today as it was then, this closely recorded, cosmic cartoon, slappy funk theme provided the films backdrop for a workshop montage scene where an aardvarkian spaceman constructs a giant metal face robot which might well leave fans of Madlib and MF Doom fans pondering time travel! Like much of the lost and unreleased projects that stalled on the peripheries of early proto-Madchester, including the disco-pogo music of Spider King, Gerry And The Holograms, The 48 Chairs, Naffi and The Mothmen, this record has been frozen in time waiting for the wider marathon of independent pop to catch up!

Presented here faithful the 45 format of choice, this 7' might well be another missing link between your Rabid, Absurd and Factory records, backed with another lesser- known Invisible girls recording Scandinavian Wastes which has also been begging for its first vinyl outing since its recording in the early 1980's. Another historical bucket list release for Finders Keepers Records outernational discography, leaving zero stones unturned, even the ones under our own doorstep.

Available for the first time in a remastered edition (LP with CD included), it contains the anastatic reprint of flyers and documents that accompanied the original version. Originally published by Blu Bus - the label related to the band itself - the record is a truly classic in the vein of early Husker Du, fusing heartfelt melodies with a fast and furious approach.

Tribal Noise were formed in Bologna in 1983, the first nucleus was composed by Cesare Ferioli on drums, Federico Poggipollini on bass, Andrea D'Alessandro on guitar, Giuseppe Yu Guerra on keyboards and Giampiero Babbini on vocals. At the end of 1983, the line up slightly changed with the entry of Fabrizio "Felix" Frassineti in place of Andrea D'Alessandro. The group was noted for the lyrics in Italian, their goth and post-punk approach and a series of compositions akin to the mastery of Joy Division, The Cure, or Siouxsie & The Banshees. This anthology collects all of their works, the Ep C.A.S. records and a series of tracks that appeared on tape compilation and fanzines. Such a great discovery of the earliest Italian underground of the mid-eighties.

Volition Immanent - Volition Immanent

Since first joining forces in 2014, hardware freak Parrish Smith
and former punk activist Mark van de Maat (founder of Amsterdam's admirable Knekelhuis label) have earned a reputation for delivering the kind of incendiary live shows that were once the preserve of British multi-media mavericks such as Cabaret Voltaire and Throbbing Gristle.

Mutilating and manipulating their songs on the fly, Volition Immanent takes no prisoners in pursuit of artistic expression.

We Bite was recorded at Irving Plaza in New York on March 27, 1982 at the "Walk Among Us" release party. Featuring mostly songs from that album, their classic ripping debut, this set from Glenn Danzig and Misfits shows the band in top form. They were about to hit the road for a month across the country to promote the record, but playing live in front of their de facto hometown crowd in NYC, this show is the peak of that tour, and that tour is probably the most important one in Misfits history. High quality live radio broadcast with beautifully clear sound. Essential.

The in 1994 formed music act Amen combines elements of punk, heavy metal and hardcore in their ongoing rock riffs. Their self-titled second album is a collection of punk-metal songs with uncompromising lyrics on serious topics. In comparison to the 1994 debut album Slave the sound is less heavy and leans towards nu-metal. The rawness is to be found in the intensity of the songs, like the crushing finale of Resignation / Naked and Violent' and the galloping drums of the title track Coma America'. All the aggression they put in their music is both audible in their harsh and expressive songs and the more on punk pop focused songs.

The album is available as a limited edition of 1000 numbered copies and will be released on silver vinyl.

Various - The Other Side Of Italy: The Beginning of The Post-Punk and Art-Rock Era

46

Collected here in a deluxe boxed set are 4 of the finest Spittle compilations of 1980s Italian post-punk, art-rock, and synth-wave. MILANO NEW WAVE, SAMPLES ONLY, iV3SCR, and BODY SECTION feature some of the heavy hitters of the era including DIE FORM, FRIGIDAIRE TANGO, RINF, and more as well as more obscure artists who may have only appeared ever on these comps. A brilliant box of Italian 80s WAVE that gives a wonderful overview of the depth and breadth of the scene. Limited edition boxed set.

Individual volume descriptions and track listing are below:

MILANO NEW WAVE: 1980-1983 REDUX:
Following an idea of Italian disco guru Fred Ventura to publish some recordings that have remained in the vaults for more than 25 years, and thanks to the skillful "mastering touch" of Giovanni Versari, Spittle Records present a representative and intense snapshot of the Milanese new-wave scene of the early eighties with Milano New Wave: 1980-83 Redux. Twelve tracks that recount the salient steps of the brief but intense career of four Milanese bands from the post-punk of Other Side, to the oblique funk of State Of Art, to the Kraftwerk influences of La Maison, to the electro pop-wave of Jeunesse d'Ivoire. "Boris Karloff" features Kubrix and 2+2=5 playing with La Maison, forming the group known as Entourage L'Asino. These four bands illustrate the mood of an underground scene that burned out rapidly, mostly due to the indifference of the media and recording industry during those years.

SAMPLES ONLY:
First ever reissue of a sought-after Italian compilation highlighting all the potential of the northeastern Italian post-punk scene, originally released in 1981. Starring Ruins, European Stage, and R.A.R.A., Samples Only is your kind of compilation if you're aware of the development of the new romantic and synth wave scene. It all happened back in the day near Venice. These guys were fascinated with the whole new wave phenomenon -- the radio was pumping in their single rooms and they knew the times were changin'. They were pretty young -- mostly in their twenties -- and any influence came from abroad. Rock, beat, electronic, punk, and even white funk (did someone say A Certain Ratio) all together, as a stream of consciousness. There was a leading TV program at the time, Mr. Fantasy -- directed by an influential journalist and DJ named Carlo Massarini -- and everyone interested in post-punk and art pop was watching it, including the main characters in Samples Only. They were spending all of their small wages on imported records, duplicating them on the (in)famous C90 cassette. They were dreaming of CBGB's in New York or the Blitz in London, but the Italian clubs -- Tenax in Florence, Plastic in Milan, and even the Shindy and Memorabilia in the vast northeast area -- were not afraid of the competition. Samples Only is a postcard from those days, a shining document available again for your pleasure. Includes two tracks from the group Art Déco, exclusive to this reissue.

iV3SCR (THE GREAT COMPLOTTO 2):
All the way from the imaginary NAON state here's the second re-issue of the Great Complotto manifesto from Pordenone (birthplace of the Italian punk style). Originally issued in 1983, even if most of the songs were recorded in 1981, this second compilation is even more attractive than the 1st one. What glues together all the contributions (Sexy Angels, Gigolo Look, Cancer and Mess) is the innovative and creative use of electronics. Back in print for the first time, this vinyl edition shows the original art work (a giant poster folded in four parts) and an extra cd with the complete set list and 5 bonus tracks from the bloody rare single originally enclosed with the magazine Onda 400 (with contributions from Andy Warhol Banana Technicolor, Cancer, Sexy Angels, Fhedolts and Mind Invaders).

RIYL: The Cure, DEVO, Joy Division

BODY SECTION:
Originally released in 1983 (Electric Eye) just as the new Italian rock' movement was beginning to gain momentum, this compilation reflects the impact of a 'post-Joy Division' British new wave on the genre. Divided into two sections, the softer blue section' and the more electric red section', this compilation presents some of the most eclectic groups of the period (DIE FORM, RINF), as well as more sophisticated bands like FRIGIDAIRE TANGO and JEUNESSE D'IVOIRE. It also marked the baptism of two bands (LITFIBA and DIAFRAMMA) that would become synonymous with 'the future of Italian rock' for the next ten years.

What are Dog Chocolate bothering us with now What is it They have a new album called 'Moody Balloon Baby'. Musically it's as frantic and frayed as we've come to expect, loose and whittled to a sharp point, but the knots are visible. Following the album Snack Fans (2016) and Or, a spilt with Ravioli me Away (2014), this time it's all faster and there are more textures.
Textures that come to mind:
*A plastic broom that has been used to sweep up glowing embers and the bristles have melted . *A pink chalk that got stepped on . *A green beam from a laser-pen scuttling around on a pebbledash facade . A biro shoved through a custard doughnut.

The band are four people:
*Jonathan hits 2 drums and a cymbal with force and conviction . *Matthew plays his guitar through an array of confounding soundhouses . *Robert has no soundhouses but his guitar fingers are deft . *Andrew tends to a pocket menagerie of homemade percussion, keyboard and harmonica

Some of the subjects addressed include:
*Subconscious inspiration . *English nationalism . *The post-colonial discomfort surrounding museum displays . *The enigma of rocks . *Wanting to be tiny and free of responsibilities in the face of the massive world . *Environmental concern/internet guilt
*Cosmic aligned co-incidences and why to trust them

A recurring theme on the album is an investigation of the creative act itself. What does it mean to make things Does it matter if those things are ignored or forgotten Why be in a band at all What are the problems with the Genius narrative Is it ever OK to use animals in your art In the face of a weird world getting ever weirder what role does art play, if any at all
The Jury is out on whether Dog Chocolate is a self-help band or an ideologically foggy protest band, but in just under 25 minutes the band manage to cram in bucket-loads of ideas, mess, confusion and fun.  Now all that is left to be done is to round off this press release with a perfectly pithy finishing line.

Well, this is not the same DISCHARGE that we all know and love. Technically it's the same band, but it sounds completely different. As the title states, this LP is their early demo recordings from March - June, 1977. If you've never heard this, and someone played it at a party, you would never guess who it is. No, this is not the raging D-beat hardcore that we're all accustomed to. The punk on this record is so '77 that it's almost ridiculous, very much a product of its time. The music is extremely basic, very simple, very primitive, and completely callow. It doesn't have the political, anti-war out rage either, instead we have songs with titles like, 'I Don't Care', 'Acne', 'I love Dead Babies', and 'Sweet Suburban Dreams'. And if the lyrical content wasn't enough to convince you that this is actually a lost SEX PISTOLS demo, then the vocal style, which sounds strikingly similar to Johnny Rotten, will. There is no list of members who played on these demos, so I have no idea how many of the members went on to be in the later incarnations of DISCHARGE. The whole record screams of the early days of young, snotty, pissed off punks filled with teen angst. I guess if you're a huge DISCHARGE completist, you should pick this up, or if your really into the raw, primal '77 punk sound. Limited edition of 500 hand numbered copies.

A seminal album of the 1980s DC Punk sound, the album was the first to feature drummer Dave Grohl, who replaced Stax for the album, and stayed with the band until they disbanded in 1990.  This was the first ever album the now world famous musician ever played on.

Since disbanding, several incarnations of Scream have reunited/resurfaced for tours and recordings since. Members of the band went on to form countless other influential acts, including Nirvana, The Foo Fighters, Wool, Queens of the Stone Age, Goatsnake, The Suspects, and others.

Southern Lord is proud to be chosen to reissue Scream's everlasting 'No More Censorship' album. The band found the original multi-track tapes and Southern Lord had them baked/prepped for a remix at Grohl's 606 Studio. The new mix sounds vital and intense; the entire packaging, layout, and design are completely different from the original, including unreleased photos of the band during that era.

Scream was formed in 1981 by vocalist Peter Stahl, and brother Franz Stahl on guitar, Skeeter Thompson on bass, and Kent Stax on drums. The next few years would see the addition of second guitarist Robert Lee Davidson and keyboard player Bobby Madden, following three LPs through Discord Records — "Still Screaming" (1983), "This Side Up" (1985) and "Banging the Drum" (1986) — Scream's 'No More Censorship' was released via reggae label RAS Records in August 1988.

  • 2: Decompose
  • 3: Disarray
  • 4: Manipulation
  • 5: Antidote
  • 6: Solace
  • 7: Doubt And Comply
  • 8: Compliance

Preoccupations' songs have always worked through themes of
creation, destruction and futility and they've always done it with
singular post-punk grit. The textures are evocative. The wire is
always a live one. While that darker side may have been
expertly explored, it's not quite the same as having been fully,
intensely lived. This time it was and the result is 'New Material',
Preoccupations' deepest and most fully realized record to date.
In it lies the difference between witnessing a car crash and
crashing your own, between jumping into an ocean and starting
to swallow the water.

Opener 'Espionage' lives up to multi-instrumentalist Scott
Munro's stated goal of making a record where nobody knows
what instrument is playing EVER,' kicking off with a clattering,
rhythmic echo that gives way to sprinting percussion and a
melody straight from Joy Division's best playbook.
'Manipulation' explores the futility of going through the motions,
balancing a drony, minimal march with a thunder roll that
brings it to the brink and 'Disarray' bursts up like a blackened
confetti cannon, the song's bright melody dancing over a refrain
of disarray, disarray, disarray.'

'New Material' does offer some relief. This is somehow the
most up-tempo thing we've ever done,' says singer / bassist
Matt Flegel. In this lies the crucial point of tension, as it's that
propulsive, itchy quality that rescued 'New Material' from the
proverbial bottom of the pit.

Vinyl format includes digital download code.

'Poke It With A Stick' - the only record by Louisville legends Your Food - is a sui generis gem of the American underground, now faithfully reissued for the first time by Drag City. Recorded in 1983 by four scarecrows from Kentucky subsisting largely on cheap beer and baked beans, the album is a burbling burgoo of hypnotic rhythm, uncoiling tension, and sharp invective - a proud bastard of post-punk royalty.

Slint drummer Britt Walford remembers seeing Your Food at age 11: You knew you were in the presence of something powerful whenever they played. Their sound was open and catatonic. Cathartic. You recognized it right away. A lot of it was based on
the bass, which was cool, and the drums were expressive, too. Like the bass, they were simple, but odd and insistent. The guitar was angular and somehow just as present as the bass and drums, which seemed like the center. Doug's singing went
right along with it. He was mocking and smart, then bare and vulnerable, without being vulnerable.'

In the fall of 1981, the residents of 1069, Louisville's original punk house, began to spy three teenagers lurking outside the decrepit environs. Eventually the teens grew bold enough to approach, and soon two, John Bailey and Wolf Knapp ( that's my real
name, not my punk rock name'), were learning guitar and bass in the trashed rehearsal space within. Their practices seemed interminable at first,' remembers Charles Schultz, and then picked up confidence and momentum.' Charles had been the drummer for Louisville's recently defunct Dickbrains, a band described by the Village Voice as freaky weirdos who couldn't fit in if they tried. He started playing with John and Wolf. Douglas Maxson, the Dickbrains male singer, was lured back from New York with the promise of beer and cigarettes and soon Your Food were playing weekly shows at the local Beat Club, mostly for free beer. (The third lurking teen, Janet Beveridge Bean, formed left-of-the-dial, cracked country act Freakwater with Dickbrains guitarist Catherine Irwin.)

Financed by a Pell Grant and what little cash the band could scrounge, the album was cut largely live in the studio by a guy who usually recorded church groups and self-released on the band's own Screaming Whoredog label. The prevailing themes of restlessness and isolation are palpable in songs like opener 'Leave', where ennui morphs into dark comic fantasy. The punk funk of 'Don't Be' fits perfectly with the downtown NYC groove of bands like ESG and Bush Tetras. Doug's sardonic wit laces
each song with trenchant, first-class put-downs. Everybody really wants to be your friend / Shit, I wouldn't even want to talk like you.'

The band became big brothers and bad influences for prepubescent Slint project Languid And Flaccid (which included Will Oldham's elder brother Ned). It was a golden age but a waning one, an adolescent state before hope or commercial
prospect or any plan for the future. When no one gives a damn what you are doing, you are free to do what you want.
Your Food managed three short tours in a world before cell phones, social media, or global positioning and earned the admiration of the few who heard them but they were sonically out of step with the then-dominant hardcore scene, where speed and aggression alone were valued. It all came to a spectacularly bitter end on the side of some frozen, forlorn highway in West Virginia. The tour van broke down three times in four days. The money for the planned second album went to repairs and the band, beaten and broken, called it quits.

The American hardcore punk band Agnostic Front formed the side project Madball in the late 80's, when front man Roger Miret let his brother Freddy Cricien perform the lead vocals. They released their debut album called Set It Off in 1994 as a document of the hardcore music they were making by that time. The classic album features a wide range of sound effects above the groovy and doomy atmosphere of the music. The speed of the title track alternates between fast parts and mid-tempo bits and brings the focus on the ever ongoing riffs. The album also features the song Down by Law', where the heaviness of the sound is brought in the drum beats.

The vinyl release of Set It Off is available as a limited edition of 1500 numbered copies. The album is pressed on 180- gram transparent red vinyl.

Groundbreaking, game-changing and some of the scariest records to come out of Detroit...or anywhere. Taking the name from a Mark Twain line, the Laughing Hyenas went back into Smart Studios with Butch Vig to record their debut full-length You Can't Pray A Lie. The Hyenas further elaborated on the template that Merry Go Round set. Kevin, Jim and Larissa lay down deceptively simple hillbilly voodoo blues that at the same time is so rhythmically complex you're never quite sure what's going on. Brannon's vocals are as frenzied and intense as ever. With the balance and everything just right on YCPAL, our dear Hyenas recorded and released one of the milestone/ cornerstone albums of the 1980s American underground music scene.

Whether you know it or not, Shark Toys are one of the best bands in LA...and they have been for quite some time. I think the Urinals would agree and now they can finally call them labelmates. Their first single came out back in 2009, but Labyrinths is a far more developed record than that or any of their subsequent releases. Gone are most of Danny Clodfelter's former band members, but not because of some Mark E. Smith-type drama. The turnover is more likely due to nearly a decade passing and life happening. That said, this current line-up is by far the strongest. Drummer Emanuel Farias and bass-man Bill Gray (formerly of The Mae Shi, Man's Assassination Man, and a million other Smell bands) are one of the tightest rhythm sections in 21st century post-punk. They allow Clodfelter to do what he does best: thrash and wail all over his Fender six string. His angular guitar attack is well informed (by thousands of obscure punk and post-punk records) and executed (albeit after no more or less than three beers) and Gray and Farias hold it down so effectively, one might make the incorrect assumption that they're playing sober. This album at times reminds one of Weirdo Rippersera No Age on Tyvek uppers. There's an occasional sax skronk, piano plink-plunk, and the spare synth squiggle here and there, but more often than not it's a batch of fouron-the-floor pogo-friendly numbers that will have even the most jaded message board lurkers rethinking what the Los Angeles underground has to offer. Shark Toys are proofpositive that the local scene is a hell of a lot deeper than the LA River.' —Lance Barresi / Permanent Records

The Real Kids - Live At The Rat! January 22 1978

Red Star press release, late-January 1978, by Miriam Linna: "A three day engagement at Boston's Rat club (Jan. 20, 21, 22) kicked off the release of The Real Kids' premier LP for Red Star Records. The club was packed to capacity despite the two-odd feet of snow and ice which had closed several of the city's main thoroughfares during the week. The highlight of the weekend came that evening with a live broadcast on WCOZ-FM, one of New England's top FM stations. Featured on the live show were several tracks from the new LP, entitled simply, The Real Kids." And THIS here is that night. Comes in gatefold cover and with 2-sided inner sleeve.

The following three years have seen HIDE crash through with a number of aggressively rendered singles and EP's while quietly collecting the shattered pieces that would form their debut full length album, Castration Anxiety.

* Those familiar with HIDE's provocative live performances will already be accustomed to the hypnotic low-end and sinister vocal delivery that has become the band's signature. The opening track, Fall Down, sets an eerie tone that permeates Castration Anxiety until the end. Throbbing pulses swirling around Gabel's death laden mantras succumb to themes harvesting power from desperation and hopelessness.

* The first single and video for Wildfire, keeps the same repetitive, dark emphasis but delves deeper into the ideas of the physical world rejecting its inhabitants. Harkening back to the slow, brooding industrial anthems from decades before, HIDE's treatment of this sound is notably unique as it is familiar.

* Tracks such as Fucked (I Found Heaven) and Bound/Severed ratchet up the tempo with a hedonistic dance floor séance. Each song ripping apart the ideas of empowerment and autonomy, throwing them back out to the audience in the form of Sher's addictive rhythms, shattered EBM-styled samples whipped at the end of a leash, held in check by Gabel's cathartic delivery.

* Wear Your Skin unveils HIDE in a disruptive personal state. Churning electronics stepping up to anthem-styled synth melodies, disrupted sparingly by incantations of Gabel's experiences about identity and obsession, blurring those themes into prophetic feedback.

* The past few years has seen HIDE touring nationally, playing alongside related acts such as ADULT., Ceremony and Champagne Mirrors, as well as providing main support for Marilyn Manson during The Pale Emperor tour.

6-PAGE FEATURE IN MOJO CONFIRMED

* In 1977 this classic punk album had a sound flaw and wasn't heard properly until 1994 - after both former New York Dolls Johnny Thunders and Jerry Nolan had died. Now songs like 'Born To Lose' and 'Chinese Rocks' are acclaimed as punk anthems. The album has been remastered and repackaged to celebrate its 40th anniversary. Includes 20-page booklet with the background story of recording in punk London, and lyrics, in a card gatefold sleeve. The sole surviving Heartbreaker, Walter Lure, has been playing the album with an all-star line-up (members of Blondie, Replacements, MC5).

* "That 'L.A.M.F.', the only album by Johnny Thunders' swaggering, smacked-up post New York Dolls outfit, The Heartbreakers, is one of New York punk's defining artefacts (despite being recorded in Britain), is beyond dispute. 12 songs that put the guitarist's abiding passions - Chuck Berry, The Rolling Stones, Phil Spector and Shadow Morton girl groups, glam, garage, trash and junk - in perfect, speedy collision." - Damien Love, Uncut mag, 9/10.

Formed in Philadelphia in 1974 Pure Hell were the first all African-American punk band. The band was a huge influence on Bad Brains, friends with the New York Dolls, and shared a stage with Sid Vicious, but due to management issues were only able to release this one single before breaking up in 1978. The single and their one unreleased album, which has finally seen the light of day, show that Pure Hell were not only ground breaking for their skin color but for their snotty and gritty post-glam punk sound. Another classic American KBD single from Radiation Reissues.

Punk Slime Recordings are proud to present the debut album from London based Chemtrails. Founded/fronted by romantic and musical partners Mia Lust and Laura Orlova, they make catchy, fuzzy, lo-fi pop music, somewhere between The Pixies, Black Lips and Blondie, with lyrics that are surreal yet earnestly meaningful. Chemtrails made their debut in September 2016 with the single 'Aeons', and have since released two EPs.
The first, Love in Toxic Wasteland, tells stories of savagery and spirituality in a post-apocalyptic world, with melodic songs built out ofraw, heavy guitars and dreamy, reverb-soaked Farfisa body. The second EP, Headless Pin Up Girl, has a more pop-up feel to it, with Mia Lust's lyrics getting deeply personal as she openly reflects on her place in the world as a transgender woman.
The debut LP sees the band exploring wider territoryy and includes some their most unusual psychedelic power-pop songs
yet, as well as their heaviest, most aggressive garage rock numbers

The band's second album, released in 1977 just after their debut record. Despite generally bad reviews from critics at the time, the album does have its shining moments ("Life From a Window" and "The Modern World", for example). But it is also interesting as a piece of history for its lyrical content, which, as the album's title promised, is a snapshot of a day in the life of the declining British Empire during the late 1970s. 8 bonus tracks from the BBC sessions.
