Formed in 1976 in Brixton, a multicultural, and - at the time - down-at-heel part of south London, This Heat were born into a music scene in rapid flux, first thanks to the punk explosion and then via new wave and its myriad offshoots into pop, rock and art-rock. But while many sought to apply punk attitude to chart-friendly sounds, This Heat were concocting some of the most experimental ideas ever committed to tape, taking influence from musique concrète, krautrock, the burgeoning industrial scene and even the dub reggae blasting out in their home borough.

In many ways, the nuanced sound worlds created in the studio by This Heat are tailor made for sedentary headphone listening. But pulling off such complicated, genre defying compositions live was surely something to witness. Until now, there was no real official document of the group's live performances. Compiled by Charles Hayward and Charles Bullen from rough cassette tape recordings of European gigs in Tilburg, Nijmegen, Ärhus, Apeldoorn, Vienna and Rheims between April 1980 and June 1981, Live 80-81 is an essential document of This Heat's powerful live performances.

Following Modern Classics Recordings' 2016 reissue campaign to mark the band's 40th anniversary, these new releases Made Available, Repeat / Metal, and Live 80-81 round out the story. Each release is sanctioned by surviving members Charles Bullen and Charles Hayward and features newly remastered audio sourced from original tapes.

Fucked Up have released a new track, "High Rise," which is a cover of The Train Spotters' 1979 release. It comes as part of a new 7 inch from the band, due via Tankcrimes on 15 June. It's a pretty special thing, firstly as a reminder of how much this song fucking rules (spoiler: a lot), and also because the band have bulked it out in a way that stays true to the pogoing spirit of the original. Traditional rock instrumentation zooms through the compactly and tightly structured track, along with a dizzy but subtle synth line, while Damian Abraham's reliable roar leads proceedings in a suitably sweaty manner. They Were Certainly A Bit Too Far Out For A Large Part Of The Aficionados Of classic Punk' But Deserved Attention, At Least For Those Who Began To Be Tired Of The Old Stereotypes. It's No Coincidence That Reviewing The Permanent Scar/sfregio Permanente Casette In The Magazine Il Mucchio Selvaggio I Described Their Style As experimental Hardcore' And a Sort Of Meat Puppets Oriented Sound'.

Finally, Between 1982 And 1983, Italian Punk Got Its Spot On The International Map. In Fact, Even If There Were Already Some Italian Punk Bands, It Was Not Before The Emergence Of The Hardcore Movement That We Could Really Start Talking About A Real Italian Scene. Needless To Add That This Was Not Just A Simple Musical Issue, Back In The Day, For Many Of Us, Hardcore Punk Was Mainly An Attitude And A Way Of Life.

In Tuscany, The Whole Scene Became Known Under The Acronym Of Gdch (granducato Hardcore) And I Refuse It! (together With Ccm, Wardogs, Putrid Fever, Traumatic, Juggernaut And Others) Became One Of Its Most Significant Bands.

The Drowning Craze Had Formed In Early Eighties London With Simon Raymonde - The Son Of Ivor Raymonde Who Wrote Hits For Dusty Springfield, Such As "i Only Want To Be With You' And stay Awhile', And Then String Arranging For All The Walker Brothers Hits. Simon Played Piano And Violin At School, But Took His Own Tangent When Punk Rock Arrived And His Brother Got A Cheap Bass Off The Vibrators' Pat Collier And Gave It To Simon In 1977 Aged 15 Who Promptly Learnt The Whole Of Never Mind The Bollocks, The Sex Pistols First Album, In One Afternoon.

Inspired By Punk Rock/post Punk And John Peel He Was Very Much A Child Of Those Times. Glued To Peel's Lugubrious Tones On The Radio That Were Signposting A Way Out Of The Crashed Car Of Punk Rock And Into New Musical Soundscapes He Would Also Help To Carve As A Foot Soldier With The Drowning Craze.

The Band's Debut Single "storage Case" Was Released On Situation 2 In June Of 1981 And Was A Glacial, Perfect, Blissful, Post Punk, Dark Wonk Workout With A Busy Hypnotic Chorus Bass Line And, What We Would Call At The Time A 'shattered Glass' Guitar. It Was Their Only Release To Feature The Wonderful Voice Of New York Singer Angela Jaeger Who Was In London Studying Music And Theatre (and Would Eventually Join Pigbag) And Was Made Single Of The Week In The Nme And Sounds. Inevitably The Band Fell Victim To Artistic Difference, Like Any Good Band Should, And The Guitar Player Ran Off And Got A Proper Job As An Accountant.

CHRIST ON PARADE started in 1985, rising from the ashes of local bands Treason and Teenage Warning.  Like much of the punk music at the time, they had an intensely political edge and very serious lyrical approach. The "Peace Punk" scene of the early '80s Bay Area -- typified by local bands like PLH, Treason, Trial, Crucifix, and Atrocity, and heavily influenced by British anarcho-punk -- had a formative influence on many bands in the scene including CHRIST ON PARADE.
 
CHRIST ON PARADE coalesced into a unique hybrid of influences that could have only happened in the venue / living space that most of the members dwelled in, Emeryville's New Method warehouse. At that time, a lot of the Oakland punks were into the almost "prog-punk" stylings of bands like the Subhumans, Santa Rosa's Victim's Family, and the darkly paranoid spasms of England's Rudimentary Peni. Musicianship had become a virtue rather than a non-issue. Punk musicians around the Bay were beginning to put in the hours of practice. This confluence of sounds and ideas, and the fact that the East Bay was awash with LSD in those days, led to CHRIST ON PARADE's classic LP, A Mind Is A Terrible Thing.
 
The emotional expression found in A Mind Is A Terrible Thing is not so much angry as agonized. The album is a demonology of the dark undercurrent beneath the relentlessly inane and superficial '80s. Noah Landis's feral vocals and grindstone guitar spearhead the LP with second guitarist Doug Kearney, bass player Malcolm Sherwood,and drummer Todd Kramer turning in an equal number of distinctive songs and performances . The result is brooding and angular, often catchy but never poppy. The production is raw, but this unvarnished quality serves the music rather than detracts from it. The songs feature more or less straight-ahead thrashers like "Kill Your Landlord," apocalyptic post-punk like "Riding The Flatland," and many examples of CHRIST ON PARADE's trademark, genre-defying hellscapes like "Power" and "Teach Your Children Well."
 
CHRIST ON PARADE's headlined the first show at Berkeley's 924 Gilman Street, the venue that would usher in a new era of poppier punk and safer spaces. The band continued for a couple years, going through member changes and releasing more great material before finally breaking up in 1989. As America's current political and cultural climate goes from bad to worse, A Mind Is A Terrible Thingsounds better, deeper and more relevant with each passing day. -- Jesse Michaels

In 1987 Dave Edwardson Was 18, Scott Kelly Was 19, Jason Roeder Was 16, Chad Salter, The Band Elder, Was 21, And They Had Already Fallen Into Many Of Them, Including, Of Course, The Great Abyss Of Depression. Only A Teenager Could Write The Punk Anthems black,'   grey' life On Your Knees,' And Of Course The Title Track, pain Of Mind'. They Are Songs Of Survival.

With Pain Of Mind, Neurosis Sunk Their Claws Into The Hearts And Minds Of The East Bay Scene Like No One Else. They Were Fucking Dark, Gazing Right Into The Abyss And Refusing To Turn Away. The Cacophony Of Vocals On Pain Of Mind-- Scott's Unhinged Screams, And Dave's Guttural Growl, Suggested A Familiar Sort Of Internal Mania: Like The Voices In An Unquiet Mind, Paranoid, But For All The Right Reasons. And Jason Story's Original Cover Art Perfectly Captures That Torment.

Neurosis Shows In The Pain Of Mind Era Were Like Nothing Else. The Pit Was Wild, People Rolled Around On The Floor, Climbed The Walls, Threw Themselves Off The Stage. Watching Neurosis Play Felt Like A Seizure That Reset Your Brainwaves: Shock Treatment, An Exorcism. For A Few Days After A Show, You Always Felt Real Mellow.
Neurosis Reminded Us That Maybe We Weren't Free, But At Least We Were Locked Up Together. It Sounds Melodramatic, But Neurosis Might Have Saved Our Lives.

Avant-punk trio, Toresch, return with a 4 track EP for Dusseldorf's, Offen. Following on, loosening up - possibly the result of live performances. Together, Toresch, conjour up a rare spirit which lives in their sound and shapes their movement.

Coming to Peripheral Minimal is a classic of the synth-pop scene (at the time received criticism for alleged lack of emotion and musicianship), that exploded into the glare of the music press and into the bedrooms of thousands of trendy teenagers in the UK at the tail end of the 1970s and early 1980s. A time when technology was rapidly becoming affordable for the plethora of part-time synth addicts and electronic experimenters.
V-Sor,X (pronounced VEE-SORE-EX), originate from the midlands town of Lichfield (known as, rather disturbingly, 'field of the dead', in Latin!), an important (historically speaking) but unremarkable place. Founded in 1979 as a vehicle for Morgan Bryan, who influenced by the post-punk protagonists and the new-wave of electronic musicians, formed a band.
Here we present the first single by, 'V-Sor,X' entitled, 'Authors 2', originally released in 1982 on DOX Music, in a very limited edition of 300. The single commands prices of almost £100 on Discogs, and is a highly collectable artifact of an era of experimentation that perhaps no longer exists in today's world of instantaneous downloads and ridiculously expensive LP re-issues in almost (it seems) unlimited quantities.

The Inception:

The glory of punk was fading but every month there were hundreds of groups releasing 7" singles with their own money. Lichfield was a pretty, middle class city just outside Birmingham, England. Very conservative and very safe. I had been in a punk band called 'the Nurses' and was only just getting to grips with my instrument, the guitar. I was desperate to start a new band so that I could improve my skills. There was also a great feeling of brotherhood between musicians at that time, predominantly because there was content behind lyrics and music was an opportunity for the dispossessed.

This new group was set-up by myself, Morgan Bryan, and Ian ('Rolls') Rowlands. Shortly after we enlisted a singer called Irene Keyes. Irene was a short, layered, giggling teenager with a stunning voice and a warm personality. At this point we were called Ambush Infancy but both name and singer didn't quite fit the image, which was more Stranglers than X-Ray Specs. After quite a number of rehearsals Rolls and I realised it wasn't happening and we asked Irene to leave the band. I never kept in touch with her but I hope she did well as she was very talented, unfortunately the parting wasn't completely amicable.

Many positive things came out of this union but mostly a good collection of tough songs which had been well rehearsed.

The Name:

Ambush Infancy was a comment on education in 70's Britain. This was the bus station approach to youth development. Thousands of travellers on too few buses that were all going one way to the same place. It was a bit too personal and a bit dated for the style of music that was being delivered.

We decided that a new name should be created that would/could only mean one thing, and that was the band. This was the era of The Police, The Cure, The Jam, The Stranglers, etc so 'the' was also out. A list was drawn up and the band and close friends were asked to pick their favourite. Amongst the names on the list were:

V-Sor, X

There seemed little debate, V-Sor, X was by far the most popular name on the list. As for pronunciation there was only ever one way, Vee Sore Ex, but we could live with 'Veeser X'. The best derivation I heard was 'Phise Or P' . . . . well your guess is as good as mine. Was it a good choice Yes for the reasons it was chosen, i.e. it was totally unique. Unfortunately it was a marketing man's nightmare. A product that no one could pronounce and that punters couldn't second guess. Was it a band or a chemical treatment I still love the name but would advise others against taking this route.

Age Of Paranoia offers sixteen volatile tracks, packed into a succinct, white-knuckled twenty-eight minutes. The album surges with rapid-fire punk angst, replete with ripping rock leads and raised-fist, group-chanting anthems.

Dark Entries and Sacred Bones team up to release the early discography of UK synth-punk and Deathrock label Outer Himmalayan Records. Between 1979 and 1982, Nick Blinko and Martin Cooper's Outer Himmalayan Records released 7-inches by three short-lived bands - The Magits, Soft Drinks, and S-Haters - who would nonetheless cast a massive shadow on the UK's burgeoning post-punk/anarcho punk scene. Outer Himmalayan Presents collects all of the music found on those original records, along with rare and unreleased tracks by all three bands. It's a snapshot of a period of frenzied creativity by some of the UK's most thrilling experimental punks. Before Blinko went on to found the essential anarcho band Rudimentary Peni, whose storied body of work also appeared on Outer Himmalayan, he and label co-founder Cooper were The Magits. The lone release by the minimal synth-and-vocals duo, Fully Coherent, was the inaugural release on Outer Himmalayan — and, in fact, Blinko and Cooper's impetus for starting the label. The four tracks on Fully Coherent are short, sharp bursts, comprising a total of four minutes. Here, they're presented alongside the five-and-a-half minute 'A Pawn in the Game,' a song that sees Blinko and Cooper get truly weird with the extra space the longer runtime afforded them. The next release on Outer Himmalayan was S-Haters' Death of a Vampire 7", which the quartet quickly followed with Stories as Cold as the Irish Sea. The band was recognizably a deathrock act, their gothic punk in the same lineage as Joy Division and PIL's Metal Box, but it showed the same sonic adventurousness that characterized the rest of Outer Himalayan's output. '1980,' an oddity taken from the rare Another Bouquet on the Grave of Free Enterprise cassette comp, shows the most experimental flourish, with dueling male/female vocals and a prominent acoustic guitar. The final Outer Himmalayan release before it became strictly a Rudimentary Peni label was Soft Drinks' Popstars in Their Pyjamas 7". Popstars ended up being the tongue-in-cheek synth-punk trio's only release before their breakup, though they would also record 'Dangers of Drink,' for the Bouquet of Barbed Wire comp and included here, as well as the one-off track 'Misconception,' previously unreleased but now available exclusively on Outer Himmalayan Presents.

A pure shot of abrasive punk/rock 'n' roll with a hint of working class Oi!, Blitz were among the most influential punk bands ever. It was Gary Bushell (who wrote for "Sounds" and was later dubbed the 'Godfather of Oi!') who brought the band to the attention of his friend Chris Berry, who had just set up No Future records with a bank loan and high hopes. No Future 001 (and Blitz's debut release) was a 4-track EP titled All Out Attack, a 20,000-copy bestseller that made the label's fortune, later to become the most representative of the whole UK82 movement. Its follow-up, Never Surrender, reached number 2 on the Indie charts, while their 3rd EP, Warriors, showed their slight move towards the sing-a-long style of classic Oi!. Before shifting to a more new wave-influenced vein towards the end of 1983, they managed to reach number 2 on the charts with their fourth and last 'punk' single, "New Age". This 1980-1983 complete retrospective features all four aforementioned singles along with their very first recording session from 1980, the legendary Time Bomb demos, and 4 cuts from the Voice Of A Generation demos!

SUMS is the collaborative project of French electronic producer Kangding Ray and Mogwai multi-instrumentalist Barry Burns.

develop a new group that brought together different elements of both Kangding Ray and Barry Burns' musical traditions. Adding drumming savant Merlin Ettore, the pair devised a musical world that crafts post-rock soundscapes and structures using the sound-language of contemporary techno and experimental electronic music.

After a grand debut performance during the 2013 edition of the festival, the group decided take the project into the studio. Over a two-year period, working with a range of range of instruments, SUMS began to produce tracks that achieved an organic fusion of spatial electronics and rousing post-rock sounds that manages to seamlessly blends the best of the musical legacies of Mogwai and Kangding Ray.

The first action of this new phase of the project comes in the form of a 3 track EP on Berlin Atonal Recordings. A new live show will be shown first at Rewire festival on April 2nd.

Out now for the first time on vinyl! The world first heard Pill on their self-titled cassette release on Dull Tools. And the world took note. Evan Minsker, writing for Pitchfork, says 'they are loose with form, they pack in a lot of ideas, and they successfully deliver an emotionally complex narrative where joy is accompanied by an impossible-to-ignore undercurrent of danger. The band's debut outing is enigmatic—a Dull Tools record through and through—but it's also well crafted, full of stellar performances and unflinching lyrics.'
The band then signed to Mexican Summer, releasing their debut LP. Shortly after, prolific in a way that has become a hall- mark of Dull Tools artists, they release another cassette, 2017's 'Agressive Advertising'. If one thought the self-titled cassette couldn't get more acerbic and confrontational, Agresstive Advertis- ing proved them wrong.
Now both releases are available on one LP. This LP is an important document of New York City's DIY scene and one of the best bands to emerge from it. Pill are an ever present force in NYC's scene. Playing small clubs like Baby's All Right, DIY spaces like Silent Barn and even the Museum of Modern Art. When the art and culture of New York is examined in, much in the way we examine culture from the past, you can bet that Pill will be a shining example of this moment in time.

Hear Nothing, See Nothing, Say Nothing, the debut album from Discharge originally released in 1982, is widely considered to be a defining statement of hardcore and punk in general. Coming on the back of several well recieved EP's and singles, with this album Discharge laid down the blueprint for a new sound in punk rock. The songs are short, played at a constant high speed, abrasive and minimalist. Riffs were a near constant wall of ferocious strumming, aided by a constant, monotonous percussion that would become quickly known as 'D-beat'. Lyrically Discharge were leftist in nature, dealing with anarchist and pacifist morals that, when coupled with Cold War era fear, created nihilistic and alienating themes. Discharge were true originals on the punk scene who are now credited with helping to the shape the sound of everything from thrash metal to crust punk and grindcore.
