Cloud Atlas is a 2012 science fiction film written and directed by The Wachowskis and Tom Tykwer. Adapted from the 2004 novel of the same name by David Mitchell, the film has multiple plots set across six different eras, which Mitchell described as 'a sort of pointillist mosaic.' The official synopsis describes it as 'an exploration of how the actions of individual lives impact one another in the past, present and future, as one soul is shaped from a killer into a hero, and an act of kindness ripples across centuries to inspire a revolution.' Tom Hanks, Halle Berry, and Jim Broadbent lead an ensemble cast.

The score was composed by director Tom Tykwer and his longtime collaborators, Reinhold Heil and Johnny Klimek. The trio have worked together for years as Pale 3, having composed music for several films directed by Tykwer, most notably Run Lola Run, The Princess and the Warrior, Perfume: The Story of a Murderer, and The International, and contributed music to the Wachowskis' The Matrix Revolutions. Work on the Cloud Atlas score began months before shooting commenced. The music was recorded in Leipzig, Germany with the MDR Radio Symphony Orchestra and the Leipzig Radio Chorus. The score was nominated for a Golden Globe Award for Best Original Score.

Holmes & Watson is a comedic take on the famed literary characters Sherlock Holmes and Dr. John Watson as they use their brilliant minds to stop rival James Moriarty from assassinating the queen. Devo's member Mark Mothersbaugh composed the music to the movie, which stars Will Ferrell and John C. Reilly. As we follow the plot of the famed detective duo as they set out to find the culprit behind a threat at Buckingham Palace, the music follows a path of entertaining orchestral sounds.

While best known as one of the founders of the iconic new wave band Devo, Mark Mothersbaugh transformed himself into a prolific and in-demand film and television composer after the group's fortunes peaked in the '80s. Meanwhile, Mothersbaugh began to distinguish himself in the field of screen scoring, as a visual artist, a producer, and a designer. During the 2010s, Mothersbaugh's many film compositions included 2012's Hotel Transylvania (and sequels), 2014's The Lego Movie (and sequels), and, in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, 2017's Thor: Ragnarok.

B-movie junkies, gather round and prepare yourselves for what could only be described as a cinematic speedball. Take a combined hit of two of the most potent strains of toxic cinema, dress it up in ritualistic robes and make it dance to the beat of a stoned, motoric, country commune soundtrack. Like an exploito double bill where both films merge into a single feature, this directorial debut by an ex-Roger Corman protege and future Russ Meyer art director (another heady cocktail) is the product of one writing duo's fleeting time in the driving seat as the moviedrome marathon approached its dwindling finish line.

Werewolves On Wheels emerged in 1971 in a climate where the B-movie genre of the previous two decades began to make way for the early glimpses of imported slasher films and video nasties. Entirely out of popular context in 1971, the soundtrack music of Don Gere would perhaps reveal him as the most versatile actor involved in the whole production. Until this point, Don Gere had been a pop folk songwriter and a country music devotee, but while riding with the werewolves, Don Gere became a disjointed psych rock stoner making ritualistic commune country with more coincidentally in common with Germany's emerging Krautrock scene or the more localised stoner psych of Skip Spence (whose radically ahead of its time LP OAR was recognised by Columbia Records as their lowest selling record in the company's history). Imagine guitarist Sandy Bull jamming with Munich's Amon Duul 1 or some Swedish prog outfits like Trad, Gras och Stenar or a sedated Kebnekaise. In comparison to the Curb/Allan scores, for films like Wild Angels, Devil's Angels, Thunder Alley, and Born Losers (often released on Curb's own Sidewalk or Tower records), the new music made by Don Gere, only three years down the line, sounds like it's from an entirely different generation...

THE HALLOWEEN (2018) SOUNDTRACK, NOW AVAILABLE ON A NEW FORMAT: For the first time, Sacred Bones Records is making the formerly mailorder-exclusive 'art edition' of John Carpenter, Cody Carpenter, and Daniel Davies's Halloween soundtrack available for wide distribution. The art edition features deluxe packaging with unique art by Chris Bilheimer, as well as a massive foldout poster. This version is pressed on 'Blood Puddle' color vinyl (clear vinyl with inset red 'puddle') and is limited to 2000 units.

The new Halloween movie has the distinction of being the first film in the series with creator John Carpenter's direct involvement since 1982's Halloween III: Season of the Witch. Carpenter serves on the new David Gordon Green-directed installment as an executive producer, a creative consultant, and, thrillingly, as a soundtrack composer, alongside his collaborators from his three recent solo albums, Cody Carpenter and Daniel Davies.

The new soundtrack pays homage to the classic Halloween score that Carpenter composed and recorded in 1978, when he forever changed the course of horror cinema and synthesizer music with his low-budget masterpiece. Several new versions of the iconic main theme serve as the pulse of Green's film, its familiar 5/4 refrain stabbing through the soundtrack like the Shape's knife. The rest of the soundtrack is just as enthralling, incorporating everything from atmospheric synth whooshes to eerie piano-driven pieces to skittering electronic percussion. While the new score was made with a few more resources than Carpenter's famously shoestring original, its musical spirit was preserved.

'It was great,' Carpenter said of the experience. 'It was transforming. It was not a movie I directed, so I had a lot of freedom in creating the score and getting into the director's head. I was proud to serve David Gordon Green's vision.'

In the middle of the period where James Horner released successful soundtracks like Titanic and The Mask of Zorro another subtle and effective composition appeared, his soundtrack to the movie Deep Impact. The disaster movie which focuses on an asteroid hurtling towards earth grossed over $349 million worldwide. It's a multi-faceted piece, bringing the empathy with the characters to the viewers. The thematic part of this music is strong and the beauty lies in the unexpected when the giant comet is coming closer to earth. An instant classic and one of the best pieces Horner recorded.

Deep Impact was released in the same year as the other disaster movie Armageddon. Both focusing on humanity's fear of being hit by a giant rock or comet from space. While Armageddon was hitting the jackpot at the box office, Deep Impact can be seen as being the most scientifically accurate. Deep Impact stars Robert Duvall, Téa Leoni, Elijah Wood and Morgan Freeman, and was directed by Mimi Leder.

This release celebrates the rich tapestry of music over the six series with the full firepower of an 80-piece symphony orchestra and choir.

Game of Thrones really is a television phenomenon. HBO's epic small screen adaptation of George R.R. Martin's series of fantasy tomes continues to draw in record audiences around the world and shows no signs of slowing down. Indeed some 8.9m people tuned in to the Season Six finale in the US and with repeats, recordings and on-demand viewings taken into consideration, it is estimated that Game of Thrones enjoys an average of 23m viewers per instalment. With a whopping thirty-eight Emmy Awards (and counting), this series remains the darling of prime-time pay TV.

With so much music created for the sixty episodes so far broadcast, this album can of course only take in so much. The particular cues and themes it does highlight, though, lend themselves beautifully to this symphonic re-imagining.

Sex Power is one of those rarely seen French films about the sixties and starring Jane Birkin. More impressive than the movie itself is the soundtrack composed by Greek musician Vangelis. It was his first solo work and the two segments including both acoustic folk tracks as organ/harpsichord influenced pieces. The complete mix of strange sound effects, elaborate percussion and full arrangements already showing some of his future trademarks. It became the 'holy-grail' of collector's items, but is now available again on vinyl.

Right after James Horner wrote the gigantic hit charting Titanic soundtrack he started composing his eponymous The Mask of Zorro. Clocking around the 74 minutes its one of the longer productions from his side. You will recognize his motifs, but in this case these are combined with Hispanic folklore and flamenco. He also composed a song for Marc Anthony and Australian singer Tina Arena called 'I Want to Spend My Lifetime Loving You', charting both in the French and Dutch hit lists. James' elegant music and wonderful themes bringing the storyline of the movie to higher regions. The instrumental creativity combined with his typical sounds resulting in one if his finest soundtracks from the '90s.

The Mask of Zorro is a 1998 American film based on the character of the masked vigilante Zorro, portrayed in this movie by Antonio Banderas. The film also stars Anthony Hopkins, Catherine Zeta-Jones, and Stuart Wilson. The Mask of Zorro was released to critical and commercial success.

The Tom Cruise helmed, auteur driven, action spy franchise has been an American cinema staple for over twenty years. Nearly every film in the series with a new filmmaker behind the camera, and nearly every film a different composer on scoring duties. But before that became the expected standard, the first film was tasked with elevating the pulp television classic to Summer popcorn flick. Brian DePalma's sleek, smooth and masterful first entry made waves with its approach to past characters from the series, but was not so carefree with its musical legacy, bringing on composer Danny Elfman to helm the score. Stepping out of the darkness of his iconic Tim Burton collaborations and into an adaptation of Lalo Schffrin's earworm theme song, and motifs, Elfman's score is one of the best of his career, and a high water mark that future composers have had to live up to with each subsequent chapter.

You talkin' to ME'; undeniably one of the most famous quotes from movie history and from one of its most memorable characters. Travis Bickle, the frustrated Vietnam veteran in Taxi Driver; the lonely nut obsessed with sex and violence who takes a job as a cabbie to battle his insomnia. Robert De Niro's legendary performance ensured that this Scorcese classic ended up on many a 'best movie of all time' lists.

Bernard Hermann's score is comprised primarily of a brass section mixing with a saxophone theme. The music swings back and forth, to amplify Travis' deteriorating mental state. Layered atop the two key components are harps, woodwinds, and even noises of the city, like a nearby drum kit or the music of a theater. It was also Bernard Hermann's last ever soundtrack. He died just a few hours after completing the score. Like no other he composed a dark and threatening atmosphere that drags you into Bickle's twisted mind.

Hollow Earth is the new album from Pye Corner Audio aka Martin Jenkins, his third for Ghost Box. It's conceived as a sequel to 2016's Stasis. Where Stasis played with notions of outward cosmic exploration and the idea of suspended animation and sleep, Hollow Earth takes subterranean exploration and submerged psychologies as its theme.

It draws on Berlin school synth improvisations, New Age reveries and the ghosts of 90s house euphoria to summon up images of vast, awe inspiring spaces and claustrophobic chambers. It sustains an atmosphere of wonder and adventure throughout, and like its companion piece, Stasis, it works equally as a soundtrack to physical as well as mental exploration.

Pye Corner Audio specialise in majestic, cinematic electronica that evokes sci-fi soundtracks, dystopian futures and the sound of haunted dance floors. Pye Corner's Martin Jenkins (aka The Head Technician) is a veteran live performer, and has played shows and festivals all over Europe, Canada and the USA. Most notably he has supported Mogwai on several tour dates, played the Mutek festival in Montreal, the Mugako Festival in Spain and Barcelona's Primavera Club.

Pye Corner Audio pieces appear in the soundtrack to Adam Curtis's 2016 film HyperNormalisation and the 2018 Shudder TV series, Deadwax. More TV soundtrack appearances are due to appear in 2019.

António de Sousa Dias
(Portuguese composer. He has a background that includes studies in jazz, electronics, telecommunications, musicology and computer programming, in addition to his studies in composition at the Lisbon Conservatory with Capdeville and at the University of Paris VIII with Horacio Vaggione. He has had close connections with music theatre, as a member of the groups ColecViva and Opus Sic (together with Capdeville). He has written many scores for the cinema. He has been appointed to teach composition and electro-acoustics at the Escola Superior de Música in Lisbon, His composition owes much to his involvement with cinema and music theatre even when the works are not theatrical themselves. Aesthetically, he is much influenced by the ideas of Capdeville: his music embraces a wide range of stylistic references and focusses greatly on the dramatic and rhetorical function

I like the scenarios, the ambiance Still, some powerful symbolism, a nice magical tale and an interesting soundtrack composed by the director's son who was just 20 when the film was made and also appears playing piano in the movie bringing Casablanca to mind with the hypnotic repetition of the theme song symbolic of a newfound love.
  Antonio Macedo was one of the pioneers of the Portuguese filmmaker Mixing SF with fantastic presents us with a strange and disturbing world, in which irony is always present. Also surprising is the transfiguration that the real world sees itself going through when it is affected by the strangeness of a different reality. In the fantastic universe of Antonio de Macedo, the real world merely provides a set of signs which can only be deciphered with a key coming from another universe, to which only a few people have access. Macedo's movies, which include weird elements, magic fantasy, dark fantasy, science-fiction and so on.movies were almost always at odds with the Portuguese censorship,  investigation and teaching. He published several books, essays, philosophy and fiction Thus, the reading of his works becomes an initiatory process in which the reader seeks out the occult truth hidden behind the story.

The soundtrack to Doki Doki Literature Club transforms and morphs as much as the game itself. The music is so directly evocative of an entire genre - the Japanese Dating Simulation - with its resoundingly quirky and upbeat tone, while also veering into territory that is almost impossible to encapsulate. In moments, those pastel notes of sunshine and cuteness turn into somber, emotional and deeply-wrought darkness/weirdness/something else. Therein lies the secret to this album's success - it is a brilliant exercise in the complete surrender of your soul. Very few soundtracks achieve such a feat, whereas Doki Doki does it with surprising and striking success.

But instead of being the next big thing, he faded into obscurity. Though he didn't break through with Are You Serious, and a second album was recorded and shelved (eventually released in 1999), Van continued making music. With his band, Good Question, he had a regional hit with the song 'Jane' that had record companies sniffing around, but again, to no avail. Forty years later and a world away, two Australians, Wade Jackson and Greg Carey, came across Duren's lost album, fell in love with the music and set out to discover what went wrong. Kes by Ken Loach is one of the greatest British films of all time. It also has one of the finest soundtrack of the period. Put together by the incredibly talented John Cameron (the arranged for Donovan and great film score composer in his own right) this score sums up beautifully the freedom, innocence and tragedy put across in the film. With a crack British jazz line up including flute legend Harold McNair, Ronnie Ross (Bass Clarinet), Tony Carr (Drums), Danny Moss (Clarinet) and David Snell (Harp) this score not only appeals to the soundtrack collectors but also followers of the classic British jazz sound.

Source material was the original John Cameron master, which had been slightly damaged at the front end, so there is a slight change in volume at the beginning of the LP. Nobody moaned back in 2001. Things might be different now.

The score is only 19 minutes long and therefore fits perfectly onto a one-sided LP.

First ever experimental Tuareg guitar soundtrack. Original soundtrack recording to the film Zerzura, the first ever Saharan acid Western, telling the story of a nomad's search for a magic city of gold. Evoking the desert journey with free form guitar improvisations, the soundtrack is a meditation on the mysteries of the Sahara. Composed by writer and actor Ahmoudou Madassane, the instrumental score takes the familiar Tuareg guitar tradition into new directions, transforming desert blues into ambient soundscapes. Recorded in studio while watching footage from the film, the score was recorded in live and spontaneous takes. Heavily based around the electric guitar, Madassane also plays a handful of other in-studio instrumentation (prepared piano, Moog, Timpani) and is joined by a number of collaborators, including guitarist Marisa Anderson. A prolific and backing artist in a number of groups (Mdou Moctar, Les Filles de Illighadad), Madassane is well versed in Tuareg guitar folk and draws inspiration from this tradition before veering off into uncharted territory. Pieces fluctuate in timing and break free from standard rhythm, moving from melancholic serenity to blurry psychedelic fury. An experimental foray for Tuareg guitar, Zerzura is the first of its kind.

This rather mysterious Jazz recording, which dates back to 1971, was quickly put together in a studio session sandwiched between RAI orchestra rehearsals, film soundtrack recordings and various other projects that make up this incredible musical library, all recorded in that period by our best musicians. The unique particulars of this record are that the musicians are not named, except for a mythical 'Plakoti' but also the rights and the tapes seemed tohave strangely disappeared. After a period of accurate research, thanks to Maurizio Majorana (bass player for the Marc 4) we have been able to find the original recordings and also the musicians that played on it. Even though this recording was accredited to the Marc 4, by semi-official sources of the time, strangely enough only two of them are effectively present on this record Antonello Vannucchi on the Hammond Organ, Vibraphone and Piano and Roberto Podio on the Drums. The other two musicians are Giovanni Tommaso playing his mythical 'Pedrazzini' (ndr) double bass who already played together with Vannucchi as part of the famous 'Lucca Quartet' and then as the bass player of the group 'Perigeo' and Enzo Grillini, part of the Rai orchestra and a favorite guitar player of both Armando Trovajoli and Gianni Ferrio who, at the time, was considered one of the best Italian Jazz guitar player and who rarely recorded music outside of the RAI orchestra. The style of this record, thanks to this very particular group of musicians, contrary to many other Library recordings, is very jazzy and the very special sound reminds us of the Jazz organ of the Verve/Blue Note labels made in the Sixties. The Seven Men Label, another characteristic of this new edition, born from a partnership of 7 mysterious producers and musicians in order to produce background music, in fact, only produced four recordings and they are : '1' that you are already listening to, 2, AKA 'Il Cinghialetto' directed by Gianni Ferrio and played by the very best popular and classical musicians of the day, as the soundtrack of a theatre piece written by Grazia Deledda and to conclude there are two recordings made in the 1970's written by Bruno Canfora: 'Musiche di scena n°1' and 'Musiche di scena n°2'. To have been able to bring this recording out again, knowing about its ups and downs and how it was made, is even more important now, as we have been able to add yet another gem to the numerous reeditions of the 'Italian Library Music' over these past years.

After repeated accusations of forgery, unethical behaviors and war crimes, they decided to make a movie about the atrocities of American slavery as an apology of sorts. It was 1971 and the movie was FAREWELL UNCLE TOM (ADDIO ZIO TOM) The famous critic Roger Ebert called the result 'the most disgusting, contemptuous insult to decency ever to masquerade as a documentary' Naked flesh, voyeurism and violence is constantly used but gorgeous photography and a memorable score from Academy Award nominee RIZ ORTOLANI add a sickening slickness to it all: rock- beat tunes mixed with classic big band themes, waltz and funny marches and the beautiful OH MY LOVE, with the vocals from Katyna Ranieri, used, among many others by Winding Refn in his cult movie DRIVE (2011).
