  • A2: When My Baby Left Me
  • A3: Shake 'Em On Down
  • A4: Big Chief Blues

  • B1: I'm Going Back To Brownsville

Furry Lewis was a Mississippi native who found his first success in Memphis in the 1920s, recording now highly sought after sides for labels like Vocalion and Victor. Throughout the Depression and WWII Lewis maintained his day job as a street sweeper for the City of Memphis, a job he kept for over 40 years, even after the folk revival hit and he began performing and recording again. This album, originally released in 1961, is one of his earliest revival efforts and remains one of his strongest recordings to date. Featuring his unique country blues guitar style and soulful voice, this is a forgotten gem from a blues legend that deserves to be named with the greats like Patton, Johnson, Hopkins, and Hooker.

  • B5: Down There Baby

Lightnin' (The Blues Of Lightnin' Hopkins) was originally released in 1960. Featuring, as usual, his brilliant acoustic guitar work, Hopkins is accompanied here by a low key rhythm section of acoustic bass and mostly brushed drumming. The results of this minimal sound is some of the purest and most engaging blues music of the early 1960s. Though Hopkins had been recording blues and R&B for labels like Modern and Aladdin for over a decade, it was not until the folk revival firmly implanted itself into America's psyche that he crossed over to a larger audience. This is one of Hopkins earliest albums following his breakout onto the national stage and it's one of his finest performances of all-time.

Charles Bradley - Black Velvet

November 5th, 2018 would have been Charles Bradley's 70th birthday. In celebration of his extraordinary life, Daptone imprint Dunham Records is proud to announce the release of his fourth and final album, Black Velvet. Black Velvet is a celebration of Charles Bradley, lovingly assembled by his friends and family at Dunham/Daptone Records. Though chronologically the material spans Charles' entire career, this is no anthology, greatest hits or other shallow rehashing of the songs that already made him famous. Rather, this album is a profound exploration through the less-travelled corners of the soulful universe that Charles and his longtime producer, co-writer and friend Tommy "TNT" Brenneck created in the studio together over their decade-long partnership.
It features new songs recorded during the sessions from each of his three albums, heard here for the very first time in all their scorching glory: "Can't Fight the Feeling," "Fly Little Girl" and the heart-wrenching single "I Feel a Change"; hard core rarities like his funk-bomb duet with LaRose Jackson, "Luv Jones," the psychedelic groover, "(I Hope You Find) The Good Life" and the ever-illusive alternate full band electric version of "Victim of Love"; sought-after covers of Nirvana's "Stay Away," Neal Young's "Heart of Gold" and Rodriguez's "Slip Away"; and the title track "Black Velvet," a stirring Menahan Street Band instrumental to which Charles was never able to cut a vocal.

Charles was truly a transcendent singer who led a remarkable life, overcoming unimaginable adversity to achieve great success and international acclaim very late in his life. What was really special about him and made him different from everybody else in the world was how he understood his pain as a cry for universal love and humanity. He felt that if he loved enough—if we all loved each other enough—we could take away the world's pain and sadness. That is why he jumped off the stage and literally tried to hug everybody he could. It's why he took such great care of a mother that had abandoned him. It's why he sang and danced like a lunatic. It's why he screamed like an eagle. And that's why we love him.

Black Velvet is a celebration of his life, and is destined to join Charles' first three albums alongside the cannon of essential soul records for the ages.

Charley Patton was a pioneering Delta Blues singer and guitarist and is widely considered one of the most influential musicians of the 20th Century. Though he only recorded around 50 tracks in his entire career, he was a popular touring performer and his legend has only grown in the nearly 100 years since his voice and guitar were first pressed on shellac. Patton performed with and at times mentored such blues legends as Robert Johnson, and Chester Burnett (aka Howlin' Wolf).

On Lord I'm Discouraged: The Gennett Records Recording Session, Richmond, IN June 1929 Wax Love collects all the recordings Patton made for the legendary label, the same label that released early jazz from Louis Armstrong and Duke Ellington and tons of classic old-time and blues sessions. In just one day, June 14, 1929, Patton recorded 14 of the most famous Delta Blues sides in history. An essential collection for any fan of early acoustic blues.

Beth Hart - Screaming For My Supper

Three years after her debut Immortal (1996), Beth Hart released Screamin' For My Supper to great critical acclaim. Beth produced the album herself with help from longtime collaborator and bass player Tal Herzberg, resulting in a mature, fully formed record. 'LA Song' made it to a single. With her raw and fragile voice she sings some fantastic up-tempo songs and ballads. It's her more poppy approach, but still with her recognizable sound. Later on she became one of the big names in the female blues-rock and recorded several albums together with blues giant Joe Bonamassa.

V/A - Chicago Plays The Stones

Marti Caine - Point Of View

Marti Caine

Point Of View

12inchBEWITH036LP
Be With Records
23.10.2018

Marti Caine's infamous Point Of View is a groovy blend of slow-mo funk, dark disco and precise pop. Originally released on BBC Records in 1981, it has attracted a considerable cult following this century. The odd charity shop score aside, it has been impossible to find a copy for less than eye-watering sums (often selling for over £200) and, as such, it's an honour to present the first officially licensed vinyl reissue of this sublime record. Featuring expert liner notes written by Bill Brewster - perhaps the record's most notable champion - this lovingly curated release is limited to just 500 copies.

Marti Caine was a popular UK TV entertainer in the late 1970s onwards and Point Of View presented her with an opportunity to proceed in a hip direction by working with British R&B heavyweight Barry Blue. His legendary reputation was secured with a string of great records, among them the first three Heatwave albums, the Balearic hit "Afro Dizzi Act" by Cry Cisco and the cult smash "Breakin' In" by Javaroo. However, despite the array of talent working on the album, Point Of View sank without trace at the time. It's something that Blue attributes to the bizarre way BBC Records worked, and he entertainingly expands upon this within the liner notes.

Musically, the highlights are many and memorable. Its most notorious track is the sublime soul stepper "Love The Way You Love Me", the reason most people covet this album so profoundly. However, from the dark dubby disco of "Snowbird City" to the moody ballad "Love Is Running Through Me", the lesser heralded tracks are nothing short of exquisite. Indeed, the chugging elegance of sleazy disco opener "Can I Speak To The World Please" showcases a string-drenched strutting-funk that would've been enviable the world over. It's that good.

The outlandish artwork - presenting a striking, green-eyed Marti treating a tiger to a headlock - has been faithfully restored and is arguably worth the price of admission alone. With access to the original tape transfers, Simon Francis' sensitive mastering elevates the sound throughout and, as ever, it has been pressed at a reassuringly weighty 180g. Sadly, Marti died of lymphatic cancer at the tragically early age of 50 in 1995, so is not here to experience what we hope will be a long overdue reappraisal of the hitherto underheard genius of Marti Caine, the singer

Recorded in Ghent Belgium & wonderfully mixed in Tokyo by JOE TALIA, with some high-class jazzcats playing along. Various - THE ROUGH GUIDE TO HOKUM BLUES

This Rough Guide presents classic recordings from the heyday of the hokum craze - collection of humorous songs which show a fun and racy side to the blues. Featuring many legendary country bluesmen including Blind Lemon

Jefferson, Big Bill Broonzy, Blind Willie McTell and Charley Patton, plus by blues divas Bessie Smith, Ma Rainey and Memphis Minnie. With its early minstrel show origins, hokum was a novelty style that showed

a completely different side to the blues that was upbeat, salacious and light hearted. Its spicy style often made repeated and continual sexual references by using clever and subtle (but not always) innuendo. Its popularity would last

through the 1930s and its influence has remained part of the blues ever since. The LP comes with a free download code that includes extra tracks.

ARETHA'S GOLD

2x12inchMFSL2-479
MFSL Records
28.09.2018

Astonishing Collection of The Queen of Soul's Greatest Songs for Atlantic Records: Aretha's Gold Includes Nine Top Ten Hits: "Respect," "Chain of Fools," and "Think" Among Them

Mastered from the Original Master Tapes and Strictly Limited to 4,000 Numbered Copies: Mobile Fidelity 180g 45RPM 2LP of Aretha's Gold Gets to the Heart of Franklin's Range, Emotions

Aretha Franklin made her Hall of Fame reputation at Atlantic Records between 1967-1968. This astonishing two-year period witnessed the singer score nine Top 10 hits and define soul music, a era chronicled on Aretha's Gold. Pairing with producer Jerry Wexler and a flawless Muscle Shoals studio band, Franklin unleashed bolder sides of her artistry kept under wraps during her tenure at Columbia. The rest is history - a history that, until now, has never been in heard in true audiophile sound. And if there's any voice you want to experience to the most realistic extent, it's that of the vocalist Rolling Stone crowned the Greatest Singer of All Time.

Mastered from the original master tapes, pressed at RTI, and strictly limited to 4,000 numbered copies, Mobile Fidelity's 180g 45RPM 2LP of Aretha's Gold presents Franklin's most seminal early Atlantic songs with reference-standard sonics. Finally, hear the full range of the Queen of Soul's depth, reach, and expressiveness. Complementing her timeless classics with tremendous dynamics, restored balances, and stunning clarity, this collectable analog set sheds new light on Franklin's power and technique, honesty and confidence, enunciation and directness.

Hear why Franklin is even better than you likely think or remember. You just haven't been able to hear the Detroit native on a format that mirrors exactly what went down in the studios when she recorded songs that, to this day, remain the bar by which all other singers are measured. The same goes for Franklin's backing band, known as the Swampers, whose instrumental savvy, feel, and textures are so unique, the group is credited with creating its own style: The Muscle Shoals Sound. On this vinyl edition of Aretha's Gold, experience every picked guitar note, brushed snare, and fluid bass line. Seldom has a band and vocalist ever made a more formidable, memorable, and emotional combination.

The evidence plays out across these 14 songs, each a soul landmark, each unforgettable thanks to Franklin's impassioned performances and empowering attitude. The Sweet Impressions (Franklin's backing vocalists) and sweeping string arrangements bolster the foundation, but the material belongs to Franklin. A veritable hit parade, the track listing on Aretha's Gold reads like a dictionary of soul.

"I Never Loved a Man (The Way I Loved You)," "Respect," "(You Make Me Feel Like) A Natural Woman," "Chain of Fools," "Since You've Been Gone (Sweet Sweet Baby)," "Think," "The House That Jack Built," "I Say a Little Prayer," "Baby I Love You": All Top 10 hits. Plus five more tunes, including a riveting cover of Sam Cooke's "You Send Me," that charted.

You know the songs by heart. You know the voice by memory. But you've never quite known them so intimately. Aretha's Gold on Mobile Fidelity gives the Queen the royal treatment she deserves.

Bongo Joe's 45s series continues, presenting for the first time music from the past. This fifth single focusses on legendary Algerian kabyle rock band Abranis founded in 1967.The band pioneered the fusion of chaabi (traditional) music with 60s-70s western rock, proudly singing in their own berber kabyle language while wearing hippy rockers outfits. Their shows - in deeply influenced by Pan-Arabism conservative Algeria - were often cancelled by governors and the band once was arrested by the police, generating riots. They kept on playing and recording until mid 90s.This 45 presents two majors tracks from the band:Chenar Le Blues, released in 1977, was a big hit on Algerian national radio. The band's response to The Doors. Avehri, released in 1983, shows the band's obsession with merging different music styles with the North African tradition. This one goes strangely reggae

The Devil Makes Three - Chains Are Broken

The power of words isn't lost on longstanding Americana
triumvirate The Devil Makes Three - Pete Bernhard, Lucia
Turino and Cooper McBean. For as much as they remain rooted
in troubadour traditions of wandering folk, Delta blues,
whiskey-soaked ragtime and reckless rock 'n' roll, the band nod
to the revolutionary unrest of author James Baldwin, the noholds barred disillusionment of Ernest Hemingway and
Southern Gothic malaise of Flannery O'Connor.
In that respect, their sixth full-length and first original material
since 2013, 'Chains Are Broken' resembles a dusty leatherbound book of short stories from some bygone era. As the
band began writing ideas for the record they veered off the
proverbial path creatively.
Instead of their typical revolving cast of collaborators, The Devil
Makes Three stuck to the signature power trio, with one
addition. This time they invited touring drummer Stefan Amidon
to power the bulk of the percussion.
Another first, they retreated to Sonic Ranch Studios in El Paso,
TX a stone's throw from the Mexican border to record with
producer Ted Hutt (Dropkick Murphys).
The incorporation of new sounds as well as the
experimentation in space finds The Devil Makes Three crafting
a new yet still familiar sound. Coupled with a continued focus
on in-depth lyricism that tells a story in every song, 'Chains Are
Broken' is a liberating, rump-shaking collection of past, present
and future.

LP pressed on heavyweight 150g vinyl.

Minneapolis/St. Paul, May 1960: a young Bob Dylan, still known as Robert Zimmerman and not yet even 19 years old, decides to drop out of college to move to New York City and pursue a career in folk music. That same month he plays a small gathering at Karen Wallace's apartment in St. Paul - Karen's sister, Terri, was an early fan and supporter of Dylan's - mostly covering American folk and blues standards, which he'd become obsessed with since starting at the University. Still a few years before his self-titled debut, this tape is one of the earliest documents of early Dylan, and since Karen Wallace attempted to sell the tape for $10,000 in the 1970s and subsequently disappeared along with the tape, its life is another great story in the history of Bob Dylan, one of the most enigmatic and idiosyncratic celebrities of the 20th Century.

Junior Wells - Coming at You

50th Anniversary Reissue Cut from the Original Analogue Master

Best known for his signature song "Messin' With The Kid" and much-acclaimed 1965 album Hoodoo Man Blues, Junior Wells had a big hand in pioneering the hard-driving, amplified blues harmonica style synonymous with Chicago blues. One of the great electric blues albums of the late '60s, this 1968 gem features Wells in fine form on harmonica and vocals with fellow Chicago legend Buddy Guy matching his fire on lead guitar on a selection of blues standards by the likes of the Sonny Boys, Willie Dixon, and John D. Loudermilk. Wells partnership with Guy, which began in 1965, was the most significant of his career. The mix of Wells' harmonica and Guy's guitar lines created some of the best the Chicago blues had to offer. The addition of brass, in evidence here, gave his sound a rock edge which attracted a wider audience. Back on vinyl for the first time in over 40 years, this 50th anniversary reissue was cut from the original analogue master, pressed on 180-gram vinyl, and comes housed in a tip-on jacket

Ted Hawkins - Watch Your Step

You've never heard a singer quite like Ted Hawkins. With his rough-edged soul/country voice and simple acoustic guitar, Hawkins brings you into his moody world, full with the life of a street singer. His dark and often quirky songs, rooted in the firmament of American country music and rhythm and blues, are balanced with a surprisingly upbeat sense of humour. Here are Ted's compelling original songs, in an album that showed up on many "best of" lists when it was first released on Rounder Records in 1982. Four numbers feature backing by blues guitarist Philip Walker and his band. He went on to record for other labels, but these tracks represent the true and unmitigated soul of Ted Hawkins.

Original Soundtrack - Blues Brothers

* 180 Gram Audiophile Vinyl
* Original 1980 Soundtrack
* First Pressing Of 2000 Numbered Copies On Blue Vinyl -> Sold Out, Available On Black Vinyl

Comic actors John Belushi and Dan Aykroyd rightfully get credit for exposing many people to the music of Blues and R&B veterans. The soundtrack to their hugely successful musical comedy Blues Brothers was released on June 20, 1980 as the second album by the Blues Brothers Band, which also toured that year to promote the film.

The rollicking remake of the Spencer Davis Group's "Gimme Some Lovin'" was a Billboard Top 20 hit, featuring an arrangement notable for the horn section that replaces Steve Winwood's rumbling organ work. Ray Charles has a good time with "Shake a Tail Feather," and he's helped out by Jake and Elwood Blues (Belushi and Aykroyd, respectively). The cover of Solomon Burke's "Everybody Needs Somebody to Love" is a lot of fun, thanks to the great overall rhythm and Elwood's lightning-fast stage rap, while James Brown and the Reverend James Cleveland Choir provide a blast of gospel music on "Old Landmark." Aretha Franklin's "Think" is explosive, and Cab Calloway's "Minnie the Moocher" is slyly irresistible.
