Puccio Roelens - Rock Stellite

Funk is the magic word on this record here. Puccio Roelens (1919 - 1985) was an Italian composer, orchestra leader and pianist active from the mid 1940s to the time of his passing in 1985. You can easily place him in the 'library music' category with his heavily rhythmical instrumental funk with a jazz / fusion edge. Layers upon layers of different rhythm patterns get shifted here and your body moves at full throttle to the sensual, steaming hot grooves. Signore Roelens moves through a bunch of related but still different styles where melody and rhythm become one stream of energy that rushes through your physics to make you swing eternally. Quite many passages here have a slick and glittering disco feel while others take you from the hottest NYC clubs to the open air bars of Rio De Janeiro, somewhere close to the beach. Always present is his extraordinary piano playing. He caresses the keyboard of his Fender Rhodes electric piano like the silky skin of a woman while lush brass arrangements literally blow your senses before some spacey, dreamy synthesizer harmonies call for you to follow into an unknown but pleasantly colorful world of living visions. The interplay between all keyboards is marvelous and quite often turns into an enthralling dialogue of two or three instruments. You may rather drift from dream to dream and vision to vision on the soundwaves of this album than listen closely to get each played note but I assume that this was the composer's actual goal. Well, there are definitely enough moments of musical grandeur to be discovered here and if you attempt to capture them all, you will for certain end up grooving to these smooth and sexy numbers without control over yourself. No wonder original copies of this album already went for 500 US$ into the loving hands of soul collectors. Does anyone get it Well, anyway, this reissue enables us average earthlings to get an idea of how good funky library music can get.

Klaus Gesing; Björn Meyer; Samuel Rohrer - Amiira

Transparency and connection, contemplation and departure,
meditation and attack: this music fascinates from the very
beginning. It has no need to boast or become talkative, but stays
true to itself as it casually develops its poignant pulse and lets it
grow, and grow. The web of sounds soon begins to radiate from
within, it inspires images in one's head, and invites to musing and
introspection. Against the background of a wide horizon the
details of their music join, develop a life of their own, and lift off
to collective flights of ideas. This music is an invitation to listen
without prejudice, offering a way to get lost in dreams while, at
the same time, remaining solidly grounded and completely awake.
There are many connections between bass clarinetist/soprano
saxophonist Klaus Gesing, bassist Björn Meyer and drummer
Samuel Rohrer. The experience of playing together and sharing
their innovative spirit is a pre- requisite for the artistic co-
operation of this new trio, in which the love of adventure and
improvisation takes precedence over the pre-composed. Because
of this the evocative power of their interaction can generate such
strength, the give and take of their musical discourse be so
intimate.
In this music a unique sound structure grows from within itself,
layer by layer, and involves and enchants the listener. It is broadly
emotional and without mystique or pretension. How else could
these delicate dialogues develop such gravitational pull and
magic Acoustic and electronic sounds, sensuous rhythms,
sumptuous woodwind-songs, earthen and ethereal bass lines,
grooves and vibrant atmospheres all merge with one another and
graciously rise from silence to hypnotic beauty. The inner logic of
the trio's interaction is compelling for it neither strives for
attention nor takes the listener unawares. It grows and spreads
coherently like a natural organism.
The three of them have, each in their own right, worked with
outstanding vocalists. Samuel Rohrer with Laurie Anderson and
Sidsel Endresen, Klaus Gesing with Norma Winstone, Björn
Meyer with Asita Hamidi - all of whom are vocalists that can
evoke textures with delicate poise, avoiding trends, and express
them in an entirely personal way.

Miles Davis & Robert Glasper - Everything's Beautiful

Everything's Beautiful brings Miles Davis' sound into the 21st century, blending a diverse group of master takes and outtakes from across Miles' incredible tenure with Columbia Records (1955-1985) with original reinterpretations. Robert Glasper produced the collaboration. "I didn't want to do just a remix record," Glasper noted when discussing the 11-song set. "My idea was to show how Miles inspired people to make new art."

Knowing that "Miles didn't have one audience," Glasper recruited a legion of diverse guest artists to add to the magic of the project including familiar collaborators like R&B musicians Erykah Badu, Ledisi, Bilal and KING. They are joined by British soul singer-songwriter Laura Mvula, hip-hop producer Rashad Smith, Grammy-nominated Australian neo-soul quartet Hiatus Kaiyote, rapper/producer Illa J, jazz guitarist John Scofield, who collaborated with Davis, and the legendary Stevie Wonder.

Sun Ra - In Some Far Place: Roma 77 2 X Cd
  • 01: Introduction

  • 03: Spontaneous Simplicity
  • 04: Space Is The Place
  • 05: Calling Planet Earth
  • 06: Outer Spaceways Incorporated
  • 07: Penthouse Serenade
  • 08: Untitled 2
  • 09: Trying To Put The Blame On Me
  • 10: Sometimes I Feel Like A Motherless Child

1977 was a transitional time for jazz enigma and self-proclaimed member of an angel race , Sun Ra. During the Summer of 1976, he had stormed Montreux and toured West Africa with one of the greatest of his full-sized Arkestras before embarking on occasional solo concerts for the first time, emphasising his prowess at the piano. Although he had always played the blues within Arkestra sets, he now summoned up the rolling tradition of blues piano, recalling Otis Spann, Avery Parrish, stride and ricky-tick styles.

He made two solo albums for Paul Bley's Improvising Artists label ('Solo Piano' and 'St. Louis Blues') before travelling to Rome. For the concert, featured here, Ra brought in drummer Luqman Ali, who had been part of the Arkestra during the band's early Chicago years, and vocalist Thomas Thaddeus aka Eddie Thomas. Thomas was a percussionist, dancer and incense dude with the Arkestra throughout the late ‚70s period. He would appear again on Ra's 'Lanquidity' album for Philly Jazz in '79.

During this intimate concert, Ra takes us through piano and synthesizer renditions of Arkestra staples like 'Love In Outer Space', 'Space Is The Place' and 'Calling Planet Earth' but also explores a selection of jazz standards. Among them, we hear the first ever released Ra version of the 1930s staple 'I Cover The Waterfront' alongside a dissonant version of 'Sometimes I Feel Like A Motherless Child' and 'St. Louis Blues'. Ra's ties to Italy would continue the following year as he recorded three acclaimed albums for Horo Records, run by filmmaker turned label owner, Aldo Sinesio.

Following 2014's Marshall Allen compilation, 'In the Orbit Of Ra' and 2015's Gilles Peterson-curated 'To Those Of Earth... And Other Worlds', Strut and Art Yard join forces once more for the first release anywhere of 'In Some Far Place: Roma '77'. Recorded direct from the sound board and mastered from first generation reel to reel tapes, this is one of the very few trio albums by Sun Ra ever to be released. The release features rare photos from recently deceased photographer H.L. Lindenmaier with sleeve notes by the Sun Ra Arkestra's Knoel Scott.

- first issue of anywhere of this 1977 recording from Rome.
- continuation of Strut and Art Yard's Sun Ra release programme following successful compilations by Marshall Allen (2014) and Gilles Peterson (2015).
- official reissue mastered from first generation reel to reel tapes.

Two monster jazz-funk tracks back to back on a sweet 7" single. Originally released on Bobby Hamilton's rare Dream Queen album, this is the first time that those songs are available on Tramp Records' prefered format. DJs watch out, this "45" plays at 33 rpm. This way we ensured that both 5 minutes tracks sound as loud and crisp as possible!

Nat Birchall - Akhenaten

Akhenaten

Jazzman
15.08.2016

Akhenaten was the first album Nat Birchall released via the then brand-new Gondwana Records label in Manchester. Originally only released on CD this is the first time this classic recording has been made available on vinyl.

The album on the whole features a quartet, and is expanded to a quintet on the title track where UK trumpet virtuoso Matthew Halsall joins in with a stunning solo. The album explores deep, hymn-like themes at length, finding much to say on the relatively simple melodies and arrangements.

Nat and his fellow band members play here with the selfless motivation and focus that's required to allow them to tap deep into the human psyche, producing music that is soulful and stately. Very different from most modern jazz styles played nowadays, the music has a timeless beauty that will stand the test of time.

The album was enthusiastically received by music fans and critics alike, being unanimously hailed as a modern classic. Now is the time to hear this magnificent work, utilising the unique atmospherics and sonic presence that only vinyl can provide.

"An album so exceptional it fell down the cracks of the Mojo filter... spatial sunship beauty...expansive and dreamy...lyrical heat haze hypnotism...this is the record you should be expanding the collective consciousness of the neighbours with. Truly transcendental." MOJO - Disc of the day 16/07/09 "Mindblowing work...a deeply spiritual player who comes off beautifully on this set..Birchall blows with a range of feeling that takes us back to the 70s best of Pharoah Sanders, Billy Harper and Clifford Jordan...hitting a groove that lets Birchall's horn blossom wonderfully in sound - reaching forth with rich tones that are simply wonderful...." Dusty Groove USA "Akhenaten is a beautifully stately performance...from the gentle 3/4 of "Nica's Dance" to the closing "Many Blessings" Brian Morton, The Wire Magazine "Outstanding and most enthralling...Birchall is a wonderful player who wears his heart on his sleeve and plays with much warmth and sincerity" Tony Hall, Jazzwise Magazine. "Strikingly impressive...Birchall sounds amazingly soulful, each solo gathering intensity as it progresses. There's an endearing lack of tricksiness, with everything serving the spacey aesthetic of the overall project" Phil Johnson, The Independent On Sunday " A quite remarkable album, Birchall captures the hypnotic flow of John Coltrane wonderfully on four extended hymn-like explorations. Think of Coltrane's stark masterpiece "Alabama" or parts of "A Love Supreme". Chris Yates, Jazz UK

Guiding Spirit

15.08.2016

Guiding Spirit was second album by Nat Birchall for the fledgling Manchester label Gondwana Records back in 2010.

The follow-up to the remarkable debut of Akhenaten found him exploring different textures using percussion and instruments like the kora and the harp. It was also the first time Nat had recorded on the soprano saxophone, featured here on the songs Keep the Light Shining and Higher Regions. Nat reveals a concept on the instrument quite unlike most other contemporary players of the higher-pitched horn, his sound more akin to the keening tone of the Indian shenai master, Bismillah Khan, perfectly in keeping with the music's more "Eastern" sounding leanings.

The music here is firmly rooted in the modal jazz world of Pharoah Sanders, Alice Coltrane and others who sought to expand upon the avenues of expression originally forged by John Coltrane in the heady days of the early 1960s. As has often been pointed out by commentators however, this is no pastiche or "re-make". This is the real thing, played absolutely in the now, but played from and in the spirit of then.

Originally released only in CD format, Jazzman Records are proud to make this music available on vinyl for the first time.

An impressive, addictive brew of soul and funky jazz, Funk Inc comes out of the gate swinging with the eight-minute organ groove-a-thon, Kool Is Back' and never lets up. Recorded by Rudy Van Gelder, this unparalleled set in the soul-jazz canon recalls classic 1960s Blue Note sounds by the likes of Grant Green, Lou Donaldson, and Brother Jack McDuff, but with added grit, guts and groove that combines the deep-pocket, hypnotic moments of the Meters with unparalleled improvisational passages that recall the best of modern-day practitioners Galactic, Robert Walter, and the Greyboy Allstars. Unvarnished, raw, and unabashedly funky, Funk Inc is a relentlessly infectious record dripping with charm that remains worthy of exploration by anyone with passing interest in the primal power of blues, soul, jazz, or funk.

Various - Peace Chant Cd

From 1963 to 2014: "Peace Chant - raw deep and spiritual jazz" exhibits 51 years of music. A well matched anthology with sounds to dive into, hard rhythms to dance to and vocals to meditate on.

The Tramp Records crew has compiled 16 tracks in nice order and dramaturgy. Some tunes you might have never heard before unless you own one of the rare original vintage vinyl records. Peace Chant is released on two separate LPs with own catalogue numbers and on one CD. Some songs I can't get out of my mind:

The previously unreleased "Don't Give Up Your Smile Today" is opening the compilation. It's from Das Goldene Zeitalter, a band that didn't survive - but whose members had a huge influence on German jazz, soul, afrobeat and funk within the last years merging into groups like The Poets of Rhythm, The Whitefiled Bros., and The Malcouns. Boris Geiger aka. Bo Baral sings a Pharoah Sanders like tune, his voice deeply resonating, the rhythm section heavily grooving.

After the first three woolly recorded tracks Walt Bolen's "Peace Chant" with its dry and funky sounds with flute, two guitars and percussion is quite a pleasure to listen to. Organ and voice are Bolen's who used to play the keys in San Fernando Valley church when he was a child. "Peace Chant" was recorded for his own Ar-Que label in 1972 and is one of the few cuts with him as a leader. He has played sessions and clubs for years and today he is sitting at the church organ again.

This publication's oldest recording dates back to 1963: "Mozambique" by Luna Brothers Trio, a Caribbean and hypnotic instrumental. For my jazz trained ears it is rather unusual that the güiro (the gherkin played with a stick) is being played throughout the entire song. Heavily laid back cowbell, concas and timbales and the slightly detuned piano are wonderful! "Mozambique" sounds like from another star but its origin is Los Angeles, where the brothers Fred and Ricardo Luna had their night club band. You could imagine a bast skirt strip and at the same time the great Raumpatrouille (Space Patrol) landing on German B&W TV screens in 1966.

Hozan Yamamoto recorded crime jazz with the Japanese bamboo flute shakuhachi. He belonged to Tony Scotts "Music for Zen Meditation" in 1964, played with Ravi Shankar, avant-garde jazz bassist Gary Peacock and appeared at Donaueschingen Festival for contemporary music. Tokio university's open minded lecturer recorded the funky and modal "Spotlight on Sapporo" in 1972.

These days Mabon Dawud Quintet from Ethiopia is on the trail of Mulatu Astatke. Tramp Records provides the first release of "Abeba" - a funky and stoic track in Amharic mother tongue sung by a high male lamenting voice.

Even more haunting is "Ain't Gonna Wait Too Long" by Thomas Meloncon. The self-taught guitar player recorded this protest song at the age of 20. Voice, guitar, congas and double bass are plenty enough for a heavily pushing song complaining that black man's slavery isn't gone after 400 years. Artist, poet and civil right activist Meloncon (alias Muntu Mwaminifu) wrote and directed theatre and radio plays. His works are collected at Texas Southern University in Houston. "Ain't gonna wait too long" probably is his earliest artistic outing, he just had left school in 1968.

The compilation concludes with a song by Now, a band no one outside Munich might know. "Easy Tune for Dancing" can be found on a record of cultural and concert location Feierwerk form 1990. It really was a surprise to hear the quintet of trumpeter Konstantin Kern and Klaus Pfister on sax playing Afro-Cuban jazz that easily and nonchalant. If Dizzy Gillespie turned up with his bent trumpet and Lalo Schifrin sat in like he did on "Gillespiana Suite" I wouldn't be astonished!

Punk 45 - Chaos In The City Of Angels And Devils

Chaos In The City Of Angels And Devils is the new installment of Soul Jazz Records' Punk 45 series featuring an array of first generation Los Angeles punk bands including X, The Germs, The Zeros, The Urinals, The Weirdos and many more.
This is the sixth Punk 45 release on Soul Jazz Records and follows on from the earlier releases covering punk from Cleveland, Akron, UK, USA and proto-punk, as well as the book 'Punk 45 - Cover Art of Punk' written in collaboration with Jon Savage.
Unlike the other major cities of New York and London, Punk in Los Angeles was pretty much ignored by the major record industry. As bands sprang up, Los Angeles punk thus also gave rise to a wide range of its own DIY independent record labels.
Los Angeles punk came in two distinct phases. The first Hollywood groups (c.77-79) and the birth of hardcore in the surrounding Los Angeles suburbs and beaches (c.1979-81) and this album includes music from both periods. Punk 45 LA features music from both phases to provide a fascinating look at underground punk in Los Angeles in its formative years.
Album comes as double gatefold heavyweight vinyl with free download, CD and digital. Comes with extensive notes, cover art and original photography from Jenny Lens.

A Golden Age of Jewish music almost forgotten - the songs captured in 1930s' Berlin by Hirsch Lewin on his Semer label. The Semer Ensemble brings this astonishing music back to life with critically acclaimed concerts and their first album, recorded live at the Maxim Gorki Theater, Berlin, in November 2015. 1920s Berlin, a Golden Age of Jewish music and musicians. In this milieu we find Hirsch Lewin, formerly a forced laborer conscripted to Germany from his native Vilnius during World War I. After the war, Lewin decides to remain in Berlin, finds work in a bookstore, and eventually starts his own business: the Hebräische Buchhandlung (Hebrew Bookstore), Grenadierstrasse 28. The year is 1930. In the midst of Berlin's immigrant center, the Scheunenviertel, Lewin sells books in Hebrew, history books, children's books and more, prayer shawls, candles and other religious items. His speciality: gramophone records! In 1932, Lewin creates his own label, "Semer". One year later, the Nazis come to power, forbidding Jewish musicians to perform in non-Jewish settings. Semer becomes a Noah's Ark for Jewish musicians who have nowhere else to go. For five years, Lewin makes recordings at a feverish pace, creating a precious time capsule of a world facing annihilation. On November 9, 1938, SA hordes attack the Hebräische Buchhandlung, demolishing stock and store, including 4,500 recordings and 250 metal plates. The memory of the Semer label falls into oblivion for the next 60 years.

Fast forward. From 1992-2001, musicologist Dr. Rainer E. Lotz travels the world to track down the Semer recordings. Miraculously, he is able to recover and restore almost the entire catalogue. In 2012, the Berlin Jewish Museum Berlin commissions New Jewish Music luminary Alan Bern to create new interpretations of the archival recordings. Bern puts together a world-class ensemble of musicians from all ends of his musical world - America and Berlin, the old generation and the new. Bern: "It's amazing, but 80 years after the destruction of this culture there is once again a critical mass of musicians in Berlin able to take on a project like this." Drawing amply from this new wealth of Berlin talent and backed up by jazz master Martin Lillich on bass, the ensemble brings together two of the most prolific pioneers of Jewish music - Lorin Sklamberg and Paul Brody - with four leaders of the new generation of powerful performers - Daniel Kahn, Sasha Lurje, Mark Kovnatskiy and Fabian Schnedler.

For three years, Semer Ensemble expands and develops the Semer repertoire on successful tours throughout Europe. In November 2015, the ensemble records - Rescued Treasure over three nights live in concert at the Gorki Theater Studio in Berlin. The result captures the special energy of a live performance on a lovingly made, studio-quality recording.

The Semer Ensemble's depth and virtuosity can and does match the entire breadth of Hirsch Lewin's original Semer label recordings. Its fresh interpretations and provocative, contemporary arrangements open a time tunnel between 1930s Berlin and today's New Jewish Music: Berlin cabaret, Russian folk songs, Yiddish theater hits, operatic arias and cantorial music are just a small sample of this remarkable repertoire.

With all-out energy and all-in commitment, the Semer Ensemble brings an almost forgotten world back to life, not in only critically acclaimed concerts but on record as well: The Semer Ensemble's debut album, recorded at the Maxim Gorki Theater in a series of intimate exclusive concerts in November 2015, will be ready for release in spring 2016.

ARTIST INFO: Alan Bern - Piano & Accordion - Musical director Formerly of the Klezmer Conservatory Band, The Klezmatics and Kapelye, to name but a few, the Bloomington, Indiana born leading member of renowned Klezmer Ensemble Brave Old World, M.A. in philosophy and D.M.A. in composition is the initiator behind Semer Reloaded, its driving force and musical director.

Lorin Sklamberg - Voice & Accordion - Hailing from California, the founding member of The Klezmatics - his singing often described as transcendental - turned to Yiddish music in his teens. He went on to become one of the most famous singers of the genre and - being openly gay - a considerable force in developing concert formats successfully bringing together both Yiddish music and the gay lifestyle.

Daniel Kahn - Voice & Accordion - Based in Berlin, the American is the leader of Daniel Kahn & The Painted Bird. The band was founded in 2005, has released four successful albums to date and is known for its special mix of Klezmer, radical political views and Punk attitude. Sasha Lurje - voice - The versatile singer from Riga, Latvia, is a permanent cast member at Maxim Gorki Theater, where Semer Reloaded was first staged in 2012 and shall now be recorded. She also leads her own band ForShpil, working the Yiddish repertoire with a special emphasis to use the traditional sounds for contemporary content.

Fabian Schnedler - Voice & Electric guitar - After his studies in Yiddish and German literature, theatre studies and ethnomusicology, the young German attended drama school Ernst Busch and finally turned to Yiddish Song. He is a permanent cast member at Gorki Theater, together with Alan Bern co-developed Semer Reloaded and divides his time between a proper handful of performance, teaching and education engagements at Jewish Museum Berlin.

Mark Kovnatskiy - Violin - Based in Hamburg, Mark Kovnatskiy is a leading Klezmer violinist and composer, teacher of Jewish dance, and music director of the international Jewish music festival Yiddish Fest Moscow. He leads his own ensembles, the Hamburg Klezmer Band and the European World Music Ensemble, guests with a variety of Ensembles worldwide and teaches at festivals from North America to the former Soviet Union.

Paul Brody - Trumpet - Born and raised in San Francisco, Paul Brody studied Classical trumpet and composition and arrangement as defined by Third Stream music. Based in Berlin since the early Nineties, he divides his time more or less equally between Jazz and Klezmer - with an ever present ambition to fuse the two genres, particularly in his own projects Sadawi, The Detonation Orchestra and Tango Toy.

Martin Lillich - Basello - Having started his career with a classical education, double bass, bass and basello player Martin Lillich from Bad Boll in Southern Germany then went on to almost any other field there is - from Jazz through Fado, Flamenco and Turkish to Klezmer. Apart from actively playing - active ensembles at the moment Berlin 21 and Rasgueo - he always taught bass playing, before at Hochschule für Musik Hanns Eisler and international Sommerakademie für Jazz Berlin, now at Global Music Academy in Kreuzberg.

Terry Riley / Don Cherry / Karl Berger - Live In Köln, 1975

LIMITED NUMBERED EDITION OF 500 ON 180G VIRGIN VINYL

A legendary recording that pairs Don Cherry's heavenly trumpet stylings, Terry Riley's psychedelic/minimalist organ work and the vibes of Karl Berger in a great live concert recorded in Koln in 1975. Riley is in stunning form playing the kind of endlessly rippling dosed organ drones with a sense of stasis in expansion that is uniquely brain-razzing. Cherry's playing is heart-stoppingly beautiful, curling slow, melancholy arcs and threading high angel tones through Riley's electronic matrix. A great document of a key moment in the history of minimalism music and a beautiful combination of great artists.

Fever

7"-VinylPOPC146
Popcorn
17.05.2016

Another two renditions of perhaps the popcorn standard of them all, 'Fever'. On the top side, Barbara English's version is a groovy, early 60s workout with an infectious rhythm and cool female backing vocals. Turn it over and hear Earl Grant give Little Willie John himself a run for his money with a smouldering, jazzed up organ and sax led take.

De Beren Gieren - One Mirrors Many

(180 gr, incl. DL card with previously unreleased material) De Beren Gieren is a trio of explorers and improvisers that debuted in 2011 and quickly made a name for themselves in the Belgian jazz scene. One Mirrors Many is their fifth album already.

The release of One Mirrors Many on SDBAN marks the first edition on vinyl of De Beren Gieren's outstanding latest album. The record came out to huge critical acclaim in 2015, but never made it to wax until the Ghent based imprint fell for it.
De Beren Gieren is a trio of explorers and improvisers that debuted in 2011 and quickly made a name for themselves in the Belgian contemporary jazz scene. One Mirrors Many is their fifth album already, and the first one in which the band experiments with incorporating electronic analog elements to their sound. Analog effects, tape loops and contact microphones are used and adapted to their instruments. During the live performance, the electronic gear is triggered live by the musicians to accompany De Beren Gieren's compositions and improvisations. This approach not only resulted in a great deal of excellent international reviews, it also established De Beren Gieren's reputation of the most adventurous and influential jazz act around.

SDBAN Records is the youngest member of the N.E.W.S. Records family, based in Ghent, Belgium. The label started off as a sixties and seventies compilation and reissue label, with label boss Stefaan Vandenberghe's impressive personal vinyl collection at its core. The very first release was a milestone right away. The acclaimed 'Funky Chicken: Belgian grooves from the seventies' compiled the best funk tracks from the Belgian Seventies, a genre and era overlooked by many. The label also released reissues and retrospective compilations from the likes of André Brasseur and Koen De Bruyne. After two years of digging dusty crates, SDBAN broadens its horizon and starts focusing on contemporary talent as well. SDBAN Ultra is the sister label focusing on today's lively jazz and funk scene, which is simply too exciting not to be explored.

from Beale Street opened a blues club on that very thoroughfare in the early 1990s and, while he was no longer busking
for nickels and dimes, he believed business would continue to be good. 'As long as people have problems,' he explained,
'the blues can never die. Enjoy this superb 2 LP collection including "The Woman I Love",

Born in 1920, Charlie 'Yardbird' Parker made it out of Kansas City via music. He played with several bands,
experimenting all the while, declaring he was bored with the stereotype format of jazz. He set out to remove the
obstacles that barred his way to musical perfection and remove them he did. In 1945 during October and November,
Parker returned to the studios with a quintet that included Miles Davis, still only 21, to record the remainder of the
material heard on Early Bird. Enjoy this excellent LP including "Don't Blame Me", "Bongo Bop" and "Dewey Square".

Colosseum - Those Who Are About To Die Salute You

hose Who Are About to Die Salute You is the debut album by progressive Jazz rockers Colosseum, released in 1969. It is one of the pioneering albums of jazz fusion. The title is a translation of the Latin phrase 'morituri te salutant' that according to popular belief gladiators addressed to the emperor before the beginning of a gladiatorial match.

This is a powerful album, unleashing each member's instrumental prowess while consolidating each talent to form an explosive outpouring of progressive Jazz/Rock. Nothing but praise for the variety and uniqueness of each song, the playing of the musicians, and the group's ability to create a blend of Jazz, Rock, and Classical elements that was unconventional yet accessible.

American jazz musicians seeking freedom in their lives and work - loved Ellington in return. In 1973, French President
Georges Pompidou awarded Duke Ellington France's highest honour, the Legion of Honour, nominating the bandleader as
'a great musician, a great American and a great friend of our country.' True on all counts. Discover Paris with this LP

Sonny Rollins - Holding The Stage Road Shows Vol.1
  • A1: In A Sentimental Mood
  • A2: Professor Paul
  • A3: Mixed Emotions
  • B1: Keep Hold Of Yourself
  • B2: Disco Monk
  • C1: You're Mine You
  • C2: H.s
  • D1: Sweet Leilani
  • D2: Solo
  • D3: Don't Stop The Carnival

Tenor sax titan Sonny Rollins is an unsurpassed master of time who can subdivide a beat into almost subatomic intervals while maintaining hurtling momentum. His latest foray into his vast archives, Holding the Stage: Road Shows, Vol. 4 captures a different facet of the saxophonist's temporal command and offers up a treasure chest that includes tunes Rollins has never before recorded and musical relationships previously undocumented.

The album encompasses some 33 years (1979-2012) yet coheres with all of the compelling logic and narrative force of an extended Sonny solo. 'This album consists of various periods of my career, with something for everybody,' says Rollins. 'It's who I am, and the music represents just about every aspect of what I do.'

Three Rollins originals pay tribute to departed friends and colleagues: the soulful blues 'H.S.' for Horace Silver, the funky 'Professor Paul' for Saxophonist/arranger Paul Jeffrey and 'Disco Monk ,' is dedicated to Thelonious Monk, while embracing a Disco feel.
