This 1962 explosive session was young lion Freddie Hubbard's debut album for Impulse. For the occasion Hubbard displays a solid Post-Bop horn section with Curtis Fuller on trombone and the great John Gilmore on tenor saxophone in one of his rare appearances outside the Sun Ra Big Band. The sextet is completed by an extremely dynamic rhythm section featuring Tommy Flanagan (piano) Art Davis (Bass) and the super swinging Louis Hayes on drums.

'Color' is a word that crops up with great frequency whenever George Russell discusses music. 'Dixieland has a color,' he has said; 'bop is a definite color, and so is atonality.' Following that train of thought, one might extend Russell's thesis and refer to him as a kaleidoscopic musi- cal figure: so many different 'colors,' to use his phrase, appear on this album in so many shifting patterns that such a designation becomes almost inevitable (...)

Colors, kaleidoscopes, and a music that insists on pushing its way out of arbitrary bags and containers. And although Russell's music is experimental, often difficult, and based on considerable technical theory, it is definitely full of just such vivid, electric and appealing qualities. The debut album by genius trumpeter Lee Morgan. Recorded in 1957 at the very young age of 18, Indeed! is the result of a fine Hard Bop session featuring compositions by Benny Golson, Donald Byrd, Horace Silver and with Lee Morgan leading his own band. A solid quintet featuring alto sax player Clarence Sharpe and a solid rhythm section with Horace Silver (piano) Wilbur Ware (bass ) and Philly Joe Jones (drums).

After years of playing with the Moroccan community of Brussels, music maker and jazz musician Luc Mishalle knows every trick of the cross-fertilization of gnawa music, jazz & brass. Gnawa is the Northern African islamic sufi music with healing vibrations and spiritual lyrics, played by the descendants of African slaves. The album title 'Beats & Pieces' refers to the collaborations with Belgian percussionist Roel Poriau (Think of One, Antwerp Gipsy-Ska Orkestra), Tunisian electronic producer Sofyann Ben Youssef (Ammar808, Kel Assouf) and Moroccan-Belgian gnawa master Maalem Driss Filali. 'The album is significantly less 'jazz' than past collaborations with Byron Wallen and Trevor Watts,' explains Mishalle. 'It's based on gnawa songs I transcribed and arranged together. Half of the songs contain vocals, which makes it more radio-friendly.' There are also fragments of Beninese traditionals and which bring us to another thread through the album: trance. You can find it in gnawa music and even more in Benin, the cradle of voodoo. 'Trance music aims to create obsession through constant repetition. We kept the essence of that music, adding jazz and brass colours,' Mishalle finds these musicians in Brussels, and together they search for the sound of this city known for its hyper-diversity. 'Brussels' context is unique, in Belgium and beyond. Our metropole has quirky vibrations. To catch them, you have to fully submerge.'

When we did the first ever vinyl reissue of this 1972 masterpiece back in 2012 it sold out so fast and so many lost the chance to grab a copy has translated into continuous messages asking us to do a repressing of this marvel. Well, at last here it is!



One of the big names in UK Jazz, Neil Ardley was offered the leadership of the seminal New Jazz Orchestra in 1964. Under his direction the Orchestra moved though different styles and changes of personnel, bringing in musicians such as Mike Gibbs (trombone), Harry Beckett andHenry Lowther (trumpets) or even Jack Bruce (bass), some of them also contributed with the writing of some original compositions, making the NJO the root from which the UK's 70's jazz scene was to blossom.



By 1972 the NJO was already defunct, but his legacy remained in the works of its members. Ardley's 'A Symphony Of Amaranths' is a perfect example of what was boiling in the UK jazz scene. It was Ardleys tribute to his idols Duke Ellington and Gil Evans, and featured the skills of some great musicians of the scene including Don Rendell,Stan Tracey, Henry Lowther, Harry Beckett, Jeff Clyne & Jon Hiseman. Side B is inspired by the words of Edward Lear, W. B. Yeats, James Joyce and Lewis Carroll that are musicated by Ardley and feature, among other highlights, Ivor Cutler's narration of 'The Dong With A Luminous Nose' and Norma Winstone's vocals on 'Will You Walk A Little Faster'.

While those Atlantic sides are some of the greatest deep Southern soul ever recorded, there's a lot to love about her earlier recordings. Yes, there is much more of a pop R&B vibe to them with swinging arrangements and large horn and string sections but that unique and perfect voice is still there, here piano playing is gorgeous, and there are some serious Northern Soul burners in the bunch. The Tender, The Moving, The Swinging Aretha Franklin, from 1962, features some beautiful ballads and killer floor fillers and will please any fan of early '60s soul and R&B.

The Electrifying Aretha Franklin originally released in 1962 features some of her greatest early tracks, including the Northern Soul classic "Rough Lover". Based on a very accurate selection from different recordings from the golden era 1935/1937, this album originally released on Columbia consists of a gorgeous collection of classic performances by the one and only Lady Day accompanied by a stellar cast of jazz greats such as Lester Young, Teddy Wilson, Benny Goodman and the great Count Basie's rhythm section with Freddie Green, Walter Page and Jo Jones.

"Swingin'" is the key word for this great 1962 recording session with the marvelous Dexter Gordon's tenor saxophone, leading an all-star quartet including Sonny Clark - piano - Butch Warren - bass - and Billy Higgins - drums.

The album opens with the infectious, Afro-Cuban groove of "Soy Califa', featuring the unique Billie Higgins beat, and develops through some Hi-Class renditions of romantic standards such as 'Don't Explain' and 'You Stepped out of a Dream', plus the dynamic Latin rhythm of Butch Warren's 'Backbone'.

Originally released in 1963, Confidentiel is Serge Gainsbourg's fifth solo album and one of his finest and most intimate recordings. Featuring only vocals, guitar, and bass, with all original compositions from Gainsbourg, Confidentiel lets Serge's voice take center stage, and his sultry delivery does not disappoint. Full of jazzy strummed chords and beautiful walking standup bass lines, this is a perfect place to start with France's biggest pop star of the 20th century.

Sister Rosetta Tharpe is often referred to as "the godmother of rock and roll" for her pioneering guitar technique, use of distortion/reverb, and a 1963 UK tour with Muddy Waters that has been cited as a huge influence by Eric Clapton, Keith Richards, and Jeff Beck. Released in 1956, Gospel Train, is one of her finest albums and great introduction into her rocking gospel guitar style and powerful voice. Featuring the floor-filling album opener "Jericho" and book-ended by the stomping closer "99 1/2 Won't Do" this is a gospel album sure to get your body moving in a nearly sacrilegious way.

Norwegian duo Ost & Kjex have gone a long way: From their debut album 'Some But Not All Cheese Comes From The Moon' (2004), over their much acclaimed spicy second long player 'Cajun Lunch' (Diynamic 2008) and many collaborations with high-flyers such as Solomun ('Federgewicht'), Jamie Jones ('Summer Time') or H.O.S.H. ('Woo Hoo'), they have grown to become one of the few acts that perfectly bridges the gap between Underground Electronic music and Indie Pop Music.

In the blessed summer of 2008 the boys stumbled upon Solomun, the head honcho of Diynamic. A chance meeting resulting in a collaboration track called "Federgewicht", which was their entrance to his highly acclaimed record label.
Hailing from quiet Oslo, there is much time on hand to invest into the more important things in life: Making babies and making music. After about five years since their last album release, lots of touring and working on their signature sound, the two Norsemen decided it was time for another album.

'Freedom Wig' is the title, and it can mean many things: A name for the room you escape into when you listen to music. A metaphor for the sometimes false freedom we feel when we live our quite predictable and structured lives. Or simply a party hat you put on.

The album is laced with contributions by their contemporaries. Anne Lise Frøkedal, Hanne Kolstø, Jens Carelius and Jaw of dOP fame donates their wonderful and distinct voices to the album. Jazz legend Bugge Wesseltoft adds keys and modern composer Ole-Henrik Moe string arrangements. The Traces Gospel Choir brings a touch of Harlem to the ballpark, Nasra Ali Omar marimba, Tore Brevik percussion and Arild Hammerø guitars. All adding their flavour to an album that is rich on tradition but still distinctly modern.

have its appeal: though influenced, jazz does not

experimented with by (almost) every population on

elements of different folklores, that allows jazz to
constantly evolve and maintain its relevance.'

albums and an unplugged recording of 'Blue Sea', the first track to be written for their upcoming fourth album and exclusive to a Blu-ray version. The studio was designed with panoramic windows that allow the stunning backdrop

of Giske Island and the Norwegian Sea to be baked into the performances, a location that is featured in glorious high-definition on this Blu-ray. 'Ocean Sounds' builds on the recent success of Kolyadin's self-titled debut

solo album on Kscope, which has been nominated as Album of the Year at the Progressive Music Awards '18: an honour that Iamthemorning have already achieved with Lighthouse, and which is also backed by Semkina winning

Female Vocalist of the Year in the 2016 Prog Magazine Reader's poll. The pair's live performances have included the likes of London's Bush Hall, Ramblin' Man Fair and the Netherland's Midsummer Prog Festival.

and Moog counterpoint before a cosmic string-addled vibrato takes control. In this recording, Sly5thAve calls on highly respected synth player Jesse Fischer. The album resulted from a concert called 'Cali-Love', assembled for the nonprofit

music charity, Playing For Change. Attended by Dr. Dre-who took to the stage to congratulate Sly5thAve's arrangements, he said; 'I'm here to show some support and give the same amount of love that this incredible band has

more talking all that jazz, more high aiming music by fumio itabashi: mule musiq is ready to release another record by the legendary japanese jazz pianist, born in ashikaga, tochigi in the year 1949.
this time his first solo record ever: the heavy jazzing 'nature', which has never been reissued on vinyl since its birth in 1979. it has been recorded at nippon columbia 1st studio, tokyo from march 13 to 15 in the year of its release.
it features itabashi making feverish love with the piano and sharing the studio with the great bass players hideaki mochizuki and koichi yamazaki, drummers kenichi kameyama and ryojiro furusawa, soprano saxophonist yoshio otomo and vibraphone wizard hiroshi hatsuyama.
they all joined him to perform his very own songs, composed by itabashi himself and produced by ryonosuke honmura, who also produced japanese jazz heroes like saxophonist keizo inoue during his career.
but enough background information. what counts is sound. it is fresh, propulsive, twitchy and melodi-ous from the first to the last tone. sometimes the instrumentalists play a classic solo in an overall deep modal jazz atmosphere that seems to be made for cats that love the good old stars and inventors - from john coltrane to mile davis, from thelonious monk to art blakey.
'nature' also shows how deep itabashi studied the history of the genre, while keeping his very own vision of jazz alive. the man that made his professional debut as a member of the sadao watanabe quintet in 1971 and that also was a member of the elvin jones jazz machine world tour from 1985 to 1987, plays the piano in all tempos: nervous high-flying quick, deeply blue blues style slow.
besides the traditional jazz flavours, you get a feeling of mind-expanding spiritual jazz, that grand mas-ters like pharaoh sanders or gary bartz turned into a sacred music genre. a master-class record in ravishing big city jazz music, adventurous, sometimes meditative, sometimes faster than the speed of light, always grooving with a bright, pure-toned sensibility and deeply soulful melodic imaginations.
it extends the jazz history with a fine balance between tradition and innovation. and it stays infectious all the time while sounding surprisingly fresh due to a lot of thrilling musical spontaneity that touches profoundly even though all notes have been written down by fumio itabashi before he and his combat-ants entered the studio.
and maybe that's the mystery of these timeless five at times epic recordings: all notes been written on paper but each musician had the freedom to dance with them in his very own unique way. so, turn the volume loud and get ready to be steamrolled by fumio itabashi's 'nature', an inebriant album that is talking all that jazz deeply!
