Bheki Mseleku - Celebration 2x12"

From the inheritor of John Coltrane's mouthpiece a re-integration of deep South African jazz roots with the Black Atlantic spiritual jazz continuum.

Celebration's release trumpeted the emerging dawn of South Africa's epochal changes. Sainted and blessed, Bheki Mseleku appeared as the herald of a new era, a prophet of rebirth and reconnection. This is a work signalling transition and change, and a sign of a South African music that was properly reconnected with global currents - a music that could journey far beyond the stifling combination of exile and oppression in which it had been bound.

Recognising Bheki as a kindred spirit to her late husband, Alice gave him the saxophone mouthpiece that John Coltrane had used during the recording of A Love Supreme. Coltrane was a permanent touchstone for the pianist, one of the few who Bheki felt had the same esoteric and spiritual focus as himself: 'the only musicians I know of who were deeply into this were Coltrane, and Pharoah and Sun Ra', he told an interviewer in 1992.

While the idioms of post-Coltrane spirit jazz are certainly to the fore on Celebration, they are energised by a swift and original musical vision, quite specific to Bheki's music, in which whole musical systems - the marabi and mbhaqanga jazz of the townships, American jazz, European classical, and more - are seamlessly mended together by the pianist's quicksilver musical sensibility and legendary technical ability.

Celebration was originally released on compact disc and cassette in the middle of 1992 by World Circuit. It was Bheki's first statement under his own name, and the first recorded presentation of his personal musical vision. This vision had been tempered across two decades which had combined intense professional playing with profound personal trials in both the spiritual and earthly domains, all set against the greater backdrop of South African political turmoil and exile in Europe.

The band brought together musicians hailing from three signally important points within the interconnected, communicating spaces of the Black Atlantic continuum - North America, post-colonial Britain, and southern Africa. With them, Mseleku created the first major South African-led musical statement to be produced after the sufferance of exile was ended. The ultimate and most egregious remnant of the centuries-long colonial era, apartheid, was finally being dismantled as they played. At this critical point, Mseleku's musical spirit work, channelled from a higher source, spoke of a time to come where all divisions might be transcended by a greater unity.

Jean-Pierre Boistel / Tony Kennybrew - Percussions pour la danse

Deep late 80's percussion LP created to accompany contemporary jazz-dance classes. African instrumentation meets Western Jazz arrangements and computer technology. TIP!
.
Percussions Pour La Danse was a collaboration between North American born jazz & contemporary-dance instructor Tony Kennybrew and French musician Jean-Pierre Boistel. Tony, a Washington native who had studied, taught and danced professionally since the age of 12, found himself in France in the late 80's. It's here that he linked up with like-minded musician Jean-Pierre; who had recently returned from a 6-month trip to West Africa. A trip that helped refine his craft that begun in the early 70's.

The music was created for Tony to use when teaching contemporary jazz-dance classes and to accompany live performance, allowing students to 'dance slowly, rapidly and change speeds without changing the tempo!'. This work of rhythmic research was based on the 'Balance of The Walk'; in 4 times, in 6 times, in 7 times & in 3 times. In order to reach the spatial possibilities he was striving for, Jean-Pierre would also use computer assisted programming to sample and re-play his own instrumentation. This allowed him to lay down the tempo of the track and then play live over the top, which in turn gave him the freedom to add the desired instruments and effects to each song.

Jean-Pierre's use of instruments such as the Kalimba, Talking Drum & Sanza gives the album a distinctly African feel, while contemporary Jazz-dance time signatures adds a unique perspective to these traditional instrumentations creating an ethereal balance between the old and new.

The Dave Brubeck Quartet - Jazz Impressions Of Eurasia
  • A1: Nomad
  • A2: Brandenburg Gate
  • A3: The Golden Horn
  • B1: Thank You ("Dziekuje")
  • B2: Marble Arch
  • B3: Calcutta Blues

In 1958 the Dave Brubeck Quartet traveled to Europe and Asia on a state department funded tour to promote jazz music across the continents. They played 80 concerts in 14 different countries and this album is directly informed by that tour. Brubeck's compositions here draw from the folk idioms of countries they toured and incorporates them into a jazz structure. All the compositions here were written by Brubeck while on that tour and as soon as they returned the group, featuring of course on alto sax the wonderful Paul Desmond, entered the studio to get them down on tape. Featuring early explorations into Indian and Middle Eastern musical forms within the jazz genre, this album often does not get the credit it's due for helping to expand the musical palate of jazz. Essential jazz from an American legend.

Yusef Lateef - The Centaur And The Phoenix

Recorded in 2 days in October of 1960, The Centaur and The Phoenix is one of reeds player Yusef Lateef's most innovative early albums. Featuring modal and hard bop material, arrangements from a young Kenny Barron, and accompaniment from Curtis Fuller, Clark Terry, Joe Zawinul, and more, the album marks a bit of a turning point for Lateef as he expanded his sound, vision, and composing talents. With songs and arrangements clearly influenced by Charles Mingus' contemporaneous work, The Centaur and The Phoenix is a near perfect album from one of the most innovative jazz players of the mid 20th century.

An album about crossing physical and metaphorical borders that has never been timelier: Calexico's classic album 'The Black Light' turns 20 this year. This limited celebratory anniversary edition includes all new artwork by Victor Gastelum, extensive linernotes, and 11 bonus tracks.

What was surprising about The Black Light (and what set its architects apart from their indie rock peers) was the album's unusual willingness to wade into the rapids of American and Mexican culture, fully immersing itself midstream. From the outset, with 'Gypsy's Curse', the record combines guitar twang and flamenco flourishes; and by its end, almost an hour later, it's contrived a skillful and instinctive union of smoky bar room jazz, arthouse indie rock, and compelling mariachi brass in 'Frontera'. If Calexico falls short as a name, it's only in the fact that - alongside their mining of Mexico's fertile musical past - Joey Burns and John Convertino weren't just digging into California's songbook...they were unearthing America's too.

Mutima is the debut album led by bassist Cecil McBee recorded in 1974 and first released on the Strata-East label. In his review for Michael G. Nastos called it "A landmark recording in early creative improvised modern music" and states "McBee as a pure musician has staggering technique, rich harmonic ideas, and an indefatigable swing, but it is as a composer that he is set apart from other musicians of this mid-'70s era... Mutima (translated as "unseen forces") undoubtedly solidified his stature and brilliance as a major player". Dustygroove now calls it: 'A great bit of spiritual soul jazz - and one of the few albums as a leader recorded by the legendary bassist Cecil McBee! Cecil's joined here by a large group of players that includes Billy Hart on drums, George Adams on tenor, Onaje Allen Gumbs on piano, Jimmy Hopps on percussion, Art Webb on flute and Dee Dee Bridgewater on vocals - adding in just a touch of soulful color to the record as she did on a few other 70s sides like this.' Plus: 'The music's got that essential Strata East sound, with a rich and spiritual vibe on all tracks, and slight bits of funk hiding somewhere in the mix! Tracks are long and freely expressive - but never too outside, either.' A long lost classic we call it. And this latest reissue is the best vinyl version ever since it first appeared almost 45 years ago!

Connan Mockasin - Jassbusters

Nothing is ever straightforward with Connan Mockasin, and nothing should ever be straightforward with Connan Mockasin. This riddled rule has never resounded more than on Jassbusters, Mockasin's third album and first in five years. An unclassifiable, unconventional album that neither picks up from nor abandons the modes of 2013's widely-embraced Caramel or its 2010 predecessor Forever Dolphin Love, Jassbusters foreshadows a five-part melodrama titled Bostyn 'n Dobsyn, directed by and staring Mockasin. Jassbusters soundtracks the unpredictable narrative of the television series in eclectic, electric ways.

Whether bending genres for shits n' giggles or collaborating with artists like James Blake (who might just appear on a Jassbusters track), MGMT, John Cale, and Charlotte Gainsbourg, Connan Mockasin has always maneuvered in mysterious ways. After touring with the likes of Radiohead and Neil & Liam Finn (Crowded House), the Kiwi R&B surrealist continues assembling a cult around his theater, nay spectacle, of life with Bostyn 'n Dobsyn screenings and Jassbusters performances throughout October and November 2018

RE-pressed and available again on 9th november 2018! The Gunesh Ensemble was founded in 1970 in Ashkhabad, Turkmen Soviet Socialist Republic, then part of the Soviet Union. They started out as a vocal group with supporting musicians from Turkmenistan State Radio and TV. Later several young musicians came to play with them and the band's music became much more modern. The group began to play jazz-rock tightly intertwined with traditional Oriental music. With that new musical style the band participated in some popular festivals around the Soviet Union. They received various awards and became very popular. Gunesh has always been in the process of developing and was one of the first and best local jazz-groups to organically combine the principles of jazz and melodic improvisation. The remarkably beautiful arrangements and polyrhythmic compositions were always further developed thematically. This process was highly praised at the Moscow competition With A Song On Life in 1977 where the ensemble became a prize-winner. The Organizing Committee of the Festival Spring Rhythms in Tbilisi (1980) called out members Rishad Shafi as best drummer and Stanislav Morozov as best saxophonist. This, their very fine first LP was originally released in 1980 on the Soviet state label Melodyja and contains traditional Central Asian music in jazz-rock arrangements plus a Vietnamese singer. The line-up has changed many times. Around 65 musicians have been a member of the group at some point in time.

19.09.2018

Way back in the early 1980's a group of young musicians mostly in their 20's played around the LA jazz scene in a loosely organized jazz/fusion ensemble under the leadership of woodwind instrumentalist/composer-arranger Dennis Dreith. Those musicians, virtually unknown to all except their peers went on to illustrious touring and recording careers working with the biggest names in the music business and added their talents to scores of top charting recordings. Dennis himself grew into a leading film music composer and influential speaker on music industry matters. Dreith served as International President of the Recording Musicians' Association (RMA), in excess of 15 years, and served as a consultant and member of the American Federation of Musicians (AFM) Negotiating Committee. He is currently the Executive Director of the AFM & SAG-AFTRA Intellectual Property Rights Distribution Fund, overseeing numerous domestic and foreign rights agreements. The band's roster reads like a who's who of contemporary musicians these days. You may have heard of the 'Wrecking Crew,' or seen '20 Feet From Stardom.' Now you can hear the current generation of musicians who are the unsung heroes of todays' hit records, films and television shows. The Dreith Band features a collection of world class musicians who may not be well known to the public, but are legends in music industry having recorded with Frank Sinatra, The Beatles, Lady Gaga, The Beach Boys, Barbara Streisand, Steely Dan, Elvis Presley, Phil Collins, Miles Davis, Michael Jackson, The Rolling Stones and countless others. Sounding like a full jazz orchestra, The Dennis Dreith Band sonance serves as a blueprint for new acts like Snarky Puppy, Lettuce, Vulfpeck and similarly jazz influenced young groups. Everland Jazz has now carefully prepared the first ever vinyl release of the Reunion LP, a seminal and timeless jazz masterpiece.

19.09.2018

This delightfully eclectic LP is a prime example of 70's SoulJazz. It is an early fusion record combining elements from jazz, gospel, soul and blues. It even has an edge of classical music, to be heard in the clear soprano voice of lead singer A. Grace Lee Mims on several tracks. As such it is a great sign of the times, the early seventies when musical experimentation and coalition was all abound. Bass-player and band member Bill Lee would later gain fame as being the father of controversial filmmaker Spike Lee and worked as musical director/conductor on four of his son's excellent movie soundtracks. For sure you can already hear the early influences here! This is the best sounding reissue of 'A Spirit Speaks' since it's original release in 1974 and comes in an exact replica of the great original cover art. Licensed by Strate-East. - Marc Janssen

Earlier in 2017 Everland Jazz presented a reissue of Danser's Inferno's - Creation One, originally released in 1973. Now we present the even more obscure release The Danser Revolution by The John Danser Octet, almost impossible to find in original format. The ultra rare funky jazz LP from 1977 contains the killer funky fusion tune "Cool" known for being sampled by Gangstarr, Blackalicious and J.Dilla. At age 14, John Danser emigrated from London and established himself in New York City where he earned a master's degree in music at the Manhattan school of music. In his early years, Danser played in classical as well as jazz gigs, simultaneously arranging and composing. In the 1970's, composer and multi-instrumentalist John Danser formed Danser's Inferno, a funky Jazz-Rock-Fusion band, an ensemble of 14 very talented musicians. The John Danser Octet most probably contains the core of that same ensemble but the groups's single album is so rare that little is known about it's exact origins. So, just let the great music speak for itself.

Broadcast on BBC radio during the 'Jazz 625' programme on 25th March, it captures a master at the peak of his powers, and is presented here together with background notes and images.

line up of four local musicians: Takehiro Honda is on the piano with a rhythm section of Hideo Kawahara, Yasushi Yoneki, and Masahiro Yoshida, all working together with a tremendous energy.

The recordings are dated February 1986, and include the

eponymous KATONAH, AFTERNOON IN PARIS (J. Lewis), and FRIDAY THE 13TH (T. Monk).

It is worth remembering that Grossman started his journey to success at just eighteen by playing along with Miles Davis and Elvin Jones.

James Mason - Rhythm Of Life

Rhythm Of Life

Guitarist/keyboardist James Mason Is generally best remembered as a key member of Roy Ayers' late-70s jazz-funk group, during which he made prominent appearances on the Ayers' LP Lifeline, particularly the club hit "Running Away." His only solo record , titled Rhythm Of Life, was recorded with session legends such as Narada Michael Walden, Gene Torres, and Clarice Taylor, and released in 1977. The album was not a success, and suffered from poor timing as tastes had shifted away from jazz music. The record seemed destined for obscurity, as its meager printing quickly ran out, and Mason never released a follow-up. Over time however, Rhythm Of Life has taken on a new life of its own, as an unheralded jazz classic. The album's rich, textured sound, robust, funky arrangements, and Mason's solid guitar and keys work was integral to the development of the acid jazz movement of the 1990s. Tracks like "Slick City" and "Sweet Power Your Embrace" would go on to become rare-groove standards in their own rite, while "Free" has become a sampling favorite of hip-hop innovator Madlib.

A Safe Return

12inchEVERLANDJAZZ014LP
Everland
24.09.2018

Everland Jazz have picked a real gem for a reissue here! Originally released in 1980, "A Safe Return" is the second album by the Surinam jazz flutist RONALD SNIJDERS. It is a strong alloy of soul, funk, jazz and smooth disco sounds! Mersmerizing musical craftsmanship! 'Lenox' the opening track, has a playful haze escaping from every groove, with a solid hypnotical rhythmical base and haunting flute melodies that have the character of the lead vocals. Despite the slower pace, the jazzy approach of all instrumental parts brings in enough edge to capture the listener's attention. The few dreamy vocal lines add the slick pop element that takes this song to a different level and keeps it accessible. 'Surinam Lady', the next tune, on the other hand has a lightweight feeling with a beautiful lead melody from the flute and easy slow dance rhythms with a latin touch. All instrumental lines are tightly intervowen in arrangements that make this a perfect tune. Easy to listen, easy to enjoy, but still a complex soundscape with captivating changes in the melodies and instrumental dialogues that tie up your senses to the composition. - Kaseko attack' the third tune really does justice to it's title. The rhythms are powerful, the pace is faster. Bass and percussions create a whirlwind of groove due to another quite complex web of different instruments like maracas, drums, tambourines and whatever can be used to make rhythmical noises. There is even a guitar straddling into the footing of grooves and the electric piano joins the guitar. For most of it's running time this song is about groove and nothing else. The melodies from the flutes are sparsely used here adding a completely different character, rather dreamy and floating. Both worlds flow and blend beautifully. - Sisa' follows and shows an affinity for spiritual free jazz. In it's opening section flutes, acoustic guitars and other instruments tumble into the scene. The song then opens into a funky base forming the fertile soil on which the fluttering flute melodies can grow to a colorful size. The middle section is a gentle passage with an utterly beautiful flute harmony that turns into a playful and quite progressive sounding part before it fades away. - Tukayana' is an impressive journey to unknown landscapes with even a mystical turn from time to time. With - Soweto friend' you enter a lounge or bar after returning to your place of accomodation from the trip. You sit in the roof garden, take a zip from your long drink and look out to the ocean during the twilight time. This song starts with such a relaxed and easy atmosphere but soon twists the lightweight latin grooves into a jazzy rhythm figure that shows a fractured structure being kept in one piece by the enthralling flute melodies and some moony synthesizer carpets. With zippy - Djamba' with the flute going wild on a base of samba grooves from drums and bass guitar, plus a little support by the electric piano. This tune stays instrumental during it's running time but that's certainly fine. A dreamy finale comes with the title track of the album. Flute and electric piano float around another, interact like two loving souls in a gentle dialogue. A beautiful way to end such an exciting yet still accessible album. You can either turn on the stereo and turn off your mind swaying to the music, or you may as well listen closely to the many little details that make this record so intense. The playing and the sound are extraordinary! The reissue comes with a slightly improved sound by Ronald Snijders himself with the whole package retaining the spirit of the original release. For all fans of jazzy fusion and funk sounds that peep at disco music from time to time, this 1980 classic is a must have!

WE JAZZ
26.10.2018

Helsinki-based drummer Joonas Leppänen introduces Alder Ego, his quartet formation bringing together four major talents from the buzzing Finnish jazz scene. Here, Leppänen is joined by trumpeter Tomi Nikku (of Bowman Trio), saxophonist Jarno Tikka and bassist Teemu Åkerblom.

Together they create forward thinking jazz music of the now: melodic, flowing, and full of surprises. The music moves forward naturally, carrying with it multiple levels of discovery. Leppänen's musical vision has cubist undertones, and the Alder Ego tracks takes unexpected turns yet maintain their melodic clarity at all times. Each member brings forth his soloistic prowess, with the frontline of Tikka and Nikku on sax and trumpet, respectively, shining through. That being said, this is small group jazz at its best: lean yet multilayered, melodic yet challenging, and ultimately based on teamwork with very rewarding results indeed.

Gerardo Frisina - Rhythmic Conversations

With "Rhythmic Conversations" Frisina shifts the coordinates of his music to a more 'raw' soundscape, in which the rhythmic element stands in the foreground. Not just Latin-jazz dancefloor material then, but music with strong percussive and tribal elements. Music is perhaps the only truly effective language that allows people who speak different idioms to communicate with each other, and this is precisely what Gerardo Frisina's "Rhythmic Conversations" are about. Closing the record we have an alternative version of "Camagüey", a very different mix from the original one, in a particular Afro-Cuban music style called "Tumbao".

Pin Cushion Records - Voices Of Other Times

Fantastic new LP on Pin Cushion Records featuring eight superb tracks of the finest funky rock, folk and soul. The A side kicks off with the awesome funky monster 'Save Me', an absolute dancefloor bomb with slamming b-line from Nanette Workman's self titled 1976 LP. Next up is the super funky 'Lucky Lost Sin', a wicked female vocal funk-folk-jazz cut that also works well in the clubs, followed the great uplifting vibe of Rory Block's 'Lovin' Of Your Life'. Closing this side we have the wonderfully laid-back 'Santa Cruz Mountains' taken from Eddie Callahan's hugely in-demand and impossible to find 'False Ego' LP. The flip side features the excellent 'Spill The Wine', a great Rhodes-driven workout from Eric Burden's WAR, followed by David Amram's 'Message To The Politicians of the World', a killer spoken word track over a sweet melody. Next up is Friends Of Distinction's 'Light My Fire', an amazing funky cover of the Doors' classic taken from their rare 1969 Highly Distinct LP and last but not least a cool breezy summer groover from Bay Area band Kingfish whose lineup included the legendary Bob Weir, founder member of The Grateful Dead. A superb selection of tracks, not to be missed.
