Eric Duncan - Shut It

For his first outing on NAAR, Eric Duncan presents us with Shut it, a full bore Techno-Disco Work out, complimented by an altogether more Cosmic yet Tribal remix from living legend Daniel Baldelli, alongside production partner Marco Dionig. On the B side you will find Zona De Perigo, which is a compelling mongrel affair showcasing a Drug Chug rhythm with a New Age feel, and melodies that border on the Anatolian, before breaking in to a satisfyingly arpeggiated conclusion.

Toni Be - Burning Patterns Ep

After a splendid record on Remote earlier this year, Frenchman Toni Be now joins the Soul Notes family for an excellent 3-track pack. With his own distinct sound which can be describes as jacking but still classy Toni Be does put in his own flavor. With loads of generic deephouse stuff being released over the last couple of months the 'Burning Patterns EP' is one that stands out for the fact that the sound is well balanced and the 3 tracks compliment each other in terms of diversity. On the title track Toni Be opens this journey into sound with a chordy club weapon which captures a subtile house feeling. Definitely suitable to play at peak time but also a nice little jam for pre and after hours. Toni continues with the slamming 'Point of no Return' which can be described as a classy yet vibey housejam with an almost glamourous itch to it. The closing down of this acey 12'' is something different. Toni's typical drumsound dominates the track throughout but the swanky ambiance points out it's after hour purpose. Yet again Soul Notes are proud to present the 5th installment in their excellent series. With an amazing VA production in the pipeline the label surely won't disappoint anyone involved in quality house music in the near future. 2013 is coming up and Toni Be's Burning Patterns EP is one for the (after) holiday-season Recordbag.

Bordello A Parigi
17.07.2015

Turning back the clock, before fast forwarding it, comes Giovanni Damico as G-Machine. An audio alumnus of Cosmo Vitelli and Daniele Baldelli comes a new a virtuoso of space boogie. Buckle up, destination: Primo Contatto. Across eight tracks the Italian astronaut traverses the sounds of the cosmos. Warbling reverberations introduce "Flying Objects", with thick bands of synthesizer throbbing in its veins. The ultra slick "Contact" follows. Electrofunk bars float beneath stratospheric synth. Styles co-mingle. Patrick Cowley melts with Afrika Bambaataa. Disco Magic meets Tommy Boy. An overarching groove permeates the album, a heady funk that courses through tracks like "Body on the Ground" and "Transmission". The moon based mirrorball sounds flex and flow, "It's A Shame" cutting floors with sleek vocoders and addictive analogue riches. If you're waiting for re-entry think again, there is no return ticket. G-Machine will only be taking passengers further and further on his cosmic odyssey with tracks like "In My Arms" and "Boogie Down". Buck Rogers in the 25th century breakdowns and rollerskate goodness from needle drop to the run-out.

Michael Chapman - Lescudjack

The term Cosmic classic has been banded around increasingly in the last decade, with its modern disco retake, thankfully, soon running out of steam. However, in Michael Chapman's Lescudjack we see the genius of Daniele Baldelli in finding obscure records that do not fit the traditional dance floor and making them work. So how does a former art and photography teacher turned singer-songwriter from the 60s folk scene end up making a discernable leftfield track that was a underground hit in the late 70s Italian club scene After a series of successful albums for the Harvest label, things started to change tack when Chapman signed for Decca and released the 1973 Milestone Grit album. Mixing his oft-gloomy writing with some lively instrumentals, this semi-experimental work was a sign of things to come.
By the time he released the Life On The Ceiling album in 1978 a pattern had emerged. The fact one such instrumental was then chosen for release a year later as a 7' and subsequent limited 12' was all the more surprising. Here then Lescudjack finds it's way to the infamous Mr Baldelli and it's place in the Cosmic greatest list and it's easy to hear why, with the Celtic influenced acoustic and electronic guitar interplay riding atop an almost rudimentary mid-tempo phased electro-beat and claps.
Derived from the Celtic words for shielded stronghold, the roots of the song are apparent, however, by utilising a modern electronic backing track, the song becomes something else altogether.
At just over 2 minutes long this oft-kilter guitar cut was always ripe for reworking and who better than DJ and producer Lexx to provide an extended edit. Almost doubling the length, loops, echo and fx push the original higher, meeting modern DJ needs while respectively allowing Chapman's brilliant playing to remain at it's heart.

Dedication - Let Me Rock You / Pito Deep

Well over a decade has passed since the birth of Dedication, Mikey Yamada and Felix Dickinson's collaborative band. The project was born way back in 2005, during one of Dickinson's frequent DJing trips to the Far East. While staying in Japan, the Cynic Records boss found himself in Yamada's studio, alongside new friend Tsuyoshi Kosuga (a bassist and guitarist most famous for his work as part of Cro-Magnon), and arpenter-turned-keyboard wizard Botch. The name Dedication
was borrowed from the clothing brand Yamada had been eveloping for some time. Felix took the recording of that frst session back to the UK, where Kyle Chandler (his partner in Foolish and Sly) added some vocals. That track, 'It's A edication' was released on Cutting Edge in Japan the following year.
Since then, Dedication material has slipped out frustratingly infrequently, a refection of the occasional nature of their recording sessions. Aside from a high profle - and well received - 12' on DFA in 2014 ('I Ain't Gonna Tell You', which was backed with a scorching rework by DJ Kaos), the outft's output has been limited to a handful of tracks on hard-to-fnd compilations. Here, two of those in-demand compilation cuts appear on 12' for the frst time, via Claremont 56, the long-running label operated by Dickinson's old friend Paul 'Mudd' Murphy. On the A you'll fnd the sublime 'Let Me Rock You', a track that frst emerged on Jason
Kincade's Mangiami collection, a tribute to the legendary NYC bar-turned-midweek party venue of the same name. Tactile, groovy and emotion-rich, the track sounds like a long lost,
late '80s remix by Frankie Knuckles - perhaps the Godfather of House's legendary reworks of Womack & Womack's 'Missing Persons Bureau', and Chaka Khan's 'Ain't Nobody' - with
Botch's fuid piano solos recalling the similarly superb work of Satoshi Tomie. It's little less than a dreamy, wide-eyed dancefoor hug. On the fip you'll fnd 'Pito Deep', a track named after a deep underwater trench that was recorded after Dedication's band members swapped instruments. Powered by a headline-
grabbing synth bassline, tidal guitar fourishes, crunchy Clav lines and spacey synth solos, the track has been in demand since it frst appeared on Mule Music's CD-only The Defnitive Japanese Scene compilation way back in 2009. Finally, this winding chunk of deep disco brilliance has fnally made it to wax.

K.i.d. - Don't Stop / Do It Again

NYC's legendary SAM Records dropped the mysteriously named K.I.D.'s "Don't Stop" in 1981. It has it all - Trancey arpeggios, Vocoders & vocals trading off with each other, Brass & some heavyweight Disco drums that helped propel it forth into the hallowed category of "club classic". The record perfectly suited the open minds and open ears of discerning disc jocks in locales such as New York and Chicago where this sublime piece of electronic Disco sleaze would get plenty burn on the city's infamous WBMX thus having a huge impact, along with a whole host of other similar records, on the burgeoning house scene that was germinating in the fertile mid western soil. "B-Side" cut "Do It Again" is a pleasant enough early 80's Disco jam, but compared to the futuristic burner that is "Don't Stop" on the other side there's one clear winner. A must have for all Cosmic, Disco, Funk aficionados. Now made available again, legitimately licensed, remastered and reissued in conjunction with SAM Records New York City.

Maajo - Tropic Of Tulli

Maajo

Tropic Of Tulli

12inchQNLP001
QUEEN NANNY
02.11.2016

Maajo stands for May. The month of excitement and expectation of imminent joy. A time of hope following weeks and months of rain and cold. The time that best encapsulates escapism, those wistful, delightful daydreams. A time when you release yourself from everyday routine and already begin to live in the holiday that hasn't yet arrived. A place that might not even exist. Let it be a warm, a joyous place, a fuzzy bricolage you witness after passing out while watching a David Attenborough documentary. Outlandish and romantic ideas of distant cultures. Maajo is motion, movement from one place to another. It is moving without travelling, dream and dance.
Maajo is a musical continuation of the similarly titled 12' single by Herman Prime, the producer's idea expanded to a five member band. The music is the product of a mixed technique where vocal samples and programmed synthesizers coalesce with fingerplucked guitars and handheld percussion. Beneath everything run several strong currents of inspiration: an obsession with balearic disco, deep tribal roots, a love of eighties afropop, lessons from minimalist composers and a desire to just dub it up.
Tropic of Tulli is not a direct flight but a meandering journey. Starting beside a flowing river, Kaba sends us on our way with a gentle arrangement of kalimba and a Mandinga poem. Two midtempo groovers, Tum'pi and Makkara, set an expectant mood. Musa Paradisa lands on a tropical island with plentiful percussion and a clatter of mallets. The party starts with the fervent afrodisco number Okudu. There is a strange detour to an urban cityscape with Fode's meandering bass line and street drummer for company. The path leads to a dark rainforest, both menacing and inviting, following Kofi Obu's feverish vocal and desertic guitar riff. Darkness is Good is a bout of afrocosmic exploration. A.O.O. offers a final chance for a sunrise dance before the beautiful balearic theme Maajo closes the album with an intoxicated smile.

* It's Bing Ji Ling's first release on Lovemonk since 2010's "Sunshine Love" * "Twilight" features three different remixes by Italian producer and disco mainstay Jose Manuel (Black Pepper) * The original is a cover of Maze & Frankie Beverly's 1984 classic, taken from Bing Ji Ling's "Sunshine For Your Mind" Apart from Bing Ji Ling's original laid-back summer-evening-boat-drinks version, Black Pepper founder and (cosmic) disco mainstay Jose Manuel came up with three different ways to rub the tune. The Gypsy Version puts the emphasis on the Spanish guitar, adds a mid-tempo beat and goes mildly crazy on the percussion. On the spacious Dub he takes the tune to the echo chamber and starts playing around with the different tracks in true Lee Perry goes to Chicago fashion, giving the tune a bit of a tribal feel. Hardway Bros - Pleasure Cry Ep (incl. Tuff City Remix)

In almost ten years of existence, Throne of Blood has cultivated a diverse family of musical talent spread across the Americas and Europe, refusing to settle into any particular sound or scene. Foremost among this crew of almost-impossible-to-pigeonhole producers is Dissident veteran Hardway Bros aka Sean Johnston, known to many as Andrew Weatherall's partner in A Love From Outer Space.
His third EP for the label, 'Pleasure Cry,' is characteristic of Sean's style : a modern sound with sly winks to his rich history in electronic music.
The proceedings kick off with 'Pleasure Cry', an ode to submission featuring the exotic talents of vocalist Sarah Rebecca (formerly known as SR Krebs) anchored by a classic 'Reece' bassline. Possibly not suitable for work but we suggest you blast it at the office to see what happens. The tune gets the remix treatment by Gerd Janson and Philip Lauer aka Tuff City Kids, piling on the pianos and cutting up the vocals in a very Saundersonian fashion.
'Argonaut' was originally written for an ALFOS gig on the Adriatic sea, and pays homage to the sounds of early 90's Balearic house. It's perfect for sunsets AND sunrises, we'll let you pick which works best for you. The self explanatory titled 'My PNO' is Sean's take on piano house, steering clear of throwback clichés. Its hook, however, should have a similar arm raising effect on dancefloor revelers.

O'flynn - Glow Worm / Aloha Ice Jam

Glow Worm'/'Aloha Ice Jam' is the third release from O'Flynn, and follows two sell out releases on Blip Discs.
Described by Boiler Room as 'one of dance music's most prosperous newcomers,' O'Flynn is quickly establishing a reputation as a bright young talent and has already had his releases supported by Ben UFO, Gilles Peterson, Bonobo, Pearson Sound, Bradley Zero, Joy Orbison and Four Tet to name but a few. A-side 'Glow Worm' was premiered by James Blake on his BBC Radio 1 residency show and showcases a contagious synth melody that is underpinned by a percussive house groove.
In a similar way to both his previous releases, the flip side takes things into a whole new territory, and in this instance the infectious disco-tinged 'Aloha Ice Jam' takes aim squarely at the dance floor and doesn't miss.

Earlier this year, an email dropped into the Claremont 56 inbox. It was from a producer in the early stages of his musical career called Simon Peter, and contained a joyous slice of languid, organic Balearica entitled 'Arc of Lark'. Suitably impressed, Claremont 56 boss Paul Murphy had no hesitation in snapping up the track right away.It marks a new stage in Simon Peter's career. He made his debut in February 2014 with the Double Up EP on Silhouette Music, which contained the shimmering nu-Balearic disco of 'Espacio Temporal'. While that was laden with sun-kissed synthesizers, 'Arc of Lark' is a much more organic affair. Blissful electric piano keys, hazy guitars and fluttering flutes cascade over an undulating live bassline and shuffling, bongo-laden beats. Warm and humid, it's a slice of audible
sunshine to brighten up the grim winter months.Long-time friends of the family 40 Thieves handle remix duties, turning Simon Peter's picturesque original into an effects-laden chunk of slo-mo dub disco goodness. 40 Thieves member Layne Fox loved the track so much that he's also contributed an additional remix that focues the action around a loose, languid, dub reggae influenced groove, spiralling electronics and Peter's mesmerizing flute line. It's a fitting conclusion to a magical label debut.

The Units - Connections (the Italian E.p.)

Opilec Music is proud to bring you the first ever remix album of San Francisco's cult synthesizer-punk legends, The UNITS! One of America's first synthesizer bands and pioneers of a genre now known as synthpunk, The Units were notable for their use of synthesizers in place of guitars, and multimedia performances featuring multiple projections of satirical, instructional films critical of conformity and consumerism... predating MTV and 25 years before the birth of YouTube! This is a definitive collection of over 24 of the band's original songs written between 1977 and 1984 and remixed for the dance floor in 2010 by a renowned and international cast of over 40 DJs, producers and bands active in the contemporary club scene. This project celebrates the futuristic Units along with the innovative DJs that first played them. Like COSMIC DISCO pioneer Daniele Baldelli, who remixed early 7" Units records "live" on the dance floor as early as 1979, ELECTRO ITALO DISCO pioneers and contemporaries of The Units, like Klein & M.B.O., N.O.I.A. and Alexander Robotnick, along with Nu-Disco and contemporary club scene trend setters like Gianluca Pandullo of I-Robots and Nemesi ...All of whom did remixes for this project! Tracks include remixes/reworks of The Units most sought-after early singles and selections from their first LP, Digital Stimulation, along with remixes culled from The Units early demos, recordings made for art happenings, film, and more.
This remix album is a view into The Units' seminal years, as well as a tribute to the early DJs and Clubs that played their records in creative ways ... giving you a glimpse into how the innovative music that ended up on the dance floor was often an unintentional collaboration between DJs and bands, inspiring each other and cheering each other on. "CONNECTIONS" is a collaborative step from the past & present ... into the viral remix culture of the future of electronic music and videos ... and the fantastic clubs they are played in.Units songs that are remixed/reworked include High Pressure Days, Warm Moving Bodies, I-Night, Cannibals, The Right Man, Go, Zombo, I-5, East West, Run, Red, Bird River, Bug Boy, More Alike, That Funky Thang, We Need a Doctor's Son, Passion of Patterns, One Man, Life is Good Now, Moving Bodies, Contemporary Emotions, Tight Fit, Cowboy, Straight Lines and more...

Plus Instruments - Love Is Enough

Joining the dots after last years reissue of Plus Instruments early 80s post-punk music on the Bodies EP on Emotional Rescue, Especial now looks at their return to recent music production, taking the song Love Is Enough from the recent Trancesonics album and giving it the all encompassing label remix treatment.

Returning to releasing music after over 30 years hiatus, the now solo, multi-instrumentalist and vocalist Truus de Groot, showed she had lost none of the unique off-kilter dance inflicted avant-pop observations.

With the release of Trancesonics things come full circle, bringing Truus' right back to her roots. On hearing Love Is Enough's thumping 4/4 kick, sliding hats, white noise and mind-worming vocals seemed in tune with what Especial is about - warped, tripped -out, dub inspired dance floor music that retains an ear for melody and at times, pop leaning, it was a calling not to be ignored.

Richard Sen then, leads the way with a trademark killer Chicago inspired bump'n'strings cut that takes Truus' vocals to the horror chamber. Next, Khidja show why they are names to watch with their retake, mixing double bass and vibes interplay, trippy fx and haunting refrain, all wrapped in a killer groove that signal a duo totally on their game.

On the flip, it was a perfect fit to get Luke Solomon in to do one of his special 'mad-hatter' skat style remixes. Jumpin' and bumpin' across the floor this is Music For Freaks. Finally, homeboy Jamie Paton does it again with twisted, bubbling dub, riding snares, arps on arps, a multi-layered, live on the mixing desk work-out for mind and feet. Is Love enough Maybe. Or it could be Dub is enough Time will tell. Dot to dot.

Music For Swimming Pools
11.11.2016

Music For Swimming Pools proudly presents it's first release, and who better to get the ball rolling than Reverso 68. Pete Herbert and long time musical partner Phil Mison come together with three new tracks and a rework of their first ever release Piece Together. Originally released on Specialist Interest Recordings and then promptly picked up by Eskimo Recordings who gave the Part Two version exposure to a wider audience, we thought it was about time Part One was given a new mixdown and polish.. and the results were superb! .. a freshly served version of this seminal mid tempo afro/80's inspired classic. And onto the new productions, first up Red Day heads straight down italo alley with chunky slo mo drums and some infectious synth action. Buzara heads into typical Reverso territory, and a nod to Frontera Del Ensueno with grainy flamenco guitars, loose percussion and old school house synths for the dancefloor.. and finally Orange Sky rounds things off with a lush hypnotic afro percussive work out. . We recommend you test the water.
