SN Variations is proud to announce the release of a new EP curated around the primordial and enigmatic music of Giacinto Scelsi.

Alongside a new recording of his intimate Duo for Violin and Cello, the EP features a new work by Chris Watson inspired by Scelsi's explorations of 'pure sound' and a breathtaking shakuhachi honkyoku performance by Joe Browning.

Born into an aristocratic family in Italy in 1905, Scelsi's creative peak arrived in the 1960s after years of research into Buddhist chant and other aspects of Eastern spirituality. His work languished in obscurity for most of his long career, but its pioneering investigations of microtonality and pure sound have exerted a deep influence on contemporary composers and electronic artists including Mica Levi, Richard Skelton and Fennesz. Against the crowded polyphonies of much post-war academic modernism, Scelsi powerfully advocated for the primordial and the esoteric, for the acoustic interplay of pure frequencies.

The Duo for Violin and Cello dates from Scelsi's most fertile period and was composed at the same time as seminal works such as Anahit and Elegia per Ty. Despite a modest combination of just two instruments, the innovative use of double stopping and extended playing techniques creates a huge, vibrating microtonal form. In this new recording, Aisha Orazbayeva and Lucy Railton execute a meticulous performance of this complex score.

Chris Watson responded to the piece with sculpted field recordings of insects made originally on a boardwalk in the middle of the Borneo jungle. Invertebrate Harmonics imaginatively links the pure sound world of Scelsi to pure sound worlds found in nature. This piece is from a larger installation work Notes from a Forest Floor, which was played first at the ICA last June as part of the event 'MusICA -Exploring Sound and Authorship'.

Finally Chris records a traditional shakuhachi honkyoku piece - Honshirabe - one of the pieces forming the historic repertoire of the wandering Zen Buddhist monks known as the Komuso. This performance by Joe Browning is one of exquisite subtleties, resonating with Scelsi's mature work while pointing to its widespread historical antecedents.

'Awake' is a soundtrack for roaming around vast city landscapes between late night and early morning. A lone wolf observes the scenery and watches over people, their heads low, on the path home to sleep. Inspired by 1980's movies, drone and video game soundtracks, Rob Orme aka submerse returns with an update to his signature sound.

Swedish producer Toxe's sharp ascent through club-cursed climes has elicited the highest praise from the start. In just a few years she has linked up with Staycore and Halcyon Veil, presented an A/V project with The Vinyl Factory, and scored KENZO's FW 2016 prints presentation with close collaborator Mechatok. Her new EP 'Blinks' is a fractal bloom of candied melodies and minor laments set in a sweep of frenetic rhythmic scenes.Developed throughout last year, 'Blinks' journals a period of inward flux. And though this is never presented in an overtly self-conscious way on the EP, Toxe binds a sweet juvenilia with a bustling and eager pensive tone to outline her tessellating sense of self just below the surface.Meditative glimpses of soaring synthetic landscapes are woven across 'Blinks' in brief snatches. Awash in horrific and gripping fluorescent hues, these environments are augmented by a comically mischievous patchwork of voices and saccharine rasps that clamour for attention, hinting at Toxe's impulse to voice a simultaneous and unorganised set of experiences.The release is mastered by Jeremy Cox, featuring art by Jasper Spicero.

MASSIVE Bicep remix released 2014, REPRESS! Exclusive Tin Man remix, shimmering neo-acid version of Sisterhood's 'Believe', previously unreleased.

Thomas Ankersmit, last seen on a pair of excellent albums for PAN and Touch (in 2011 and 2014, respectively) pays tribute to legendary Dutch composer / electronic and tape music pioneer Dick Raaijmakers with an extended study in electronic music, utilising Serge Modular feedback and sine/pulse/random generators, contact mic, and tape speed variation to mirror some of Raaijmakers' deeply weird experiments. As the label so eloquently explain - despite the abstract nature of the material, a sense of loss somehow pervades.
Raaijmakers is a genuinely legendary figure in the history of electronic music, and Thomas Ankersmit's fitting homage lands almost five years to the date of his passing, aged 83, in September 2013. Replete with experiments with sounds not found in the music, but generated by the listener's own ear as a strange side-effect, this extended piece re-contextualizes Raaijmakers' ideas about composition and spatial experience to focus on the sounds of raw electricity through creatively abused electronics, composing with analogue micro-sounds, and the threedimensional sound fields; referencing storms, thunder, crashing and falling objects, and distant radio transmissions.
The concept of the recording is directly inspired by Raaijmakers' thoughts on 'holophonic' sound fields to be individually explored by the listener. With this phenomenon, the listener's inner ears actively generate sounds that don't exist in the recorded signal, and which can change with a small movement of the head. In other words; it's unlikely that you will experience this piece of music in quite the same way as anyone else, or that you will experience it that way more than once. And it's perhaps this sense of transience; of not quite knowing whether what you're listening to has a real, physical presence, or is a direct result of strange otoacoustic phenomena, that imbues this work with such unexplained melancholy.

Solipsism is an archival release of music from Mike Simonetti's
tenure as owner of Italians Do It Better Records, spanning from
2006-2013. During that time Mike wrote a lot of music. Some of it
was used for films, some for TV commercials, some for fashion
shows and he even released a record or two.
Influenced by the intersection of 80's arena rock bands like AC/DC and Judas Priest, glam rock/dance bands like Rockets and Supermax, and especially the underground Italian producer Piero Umiliani - the album is chock-full of atmospheric rock-inspired arpeggiated riffs. The mixture of metal and chugging dance music makes for a unique listening experience. Every song has a riff, every song is heavy and dense. Only one song goes above 118 BPM. These are heavy chuggers that make for a tense emotional experience that exceeds your standard, easy-to-write-off 'soundtrack' fare, mainly because it was never written with that in mind. It was meant to be a fist-pumping arena rock inspired thumper! You can hear that in the one two punch of 'A Prayer For War' into 'Illusions", which is an outtake from his "The Magician"
sessions. Other songs like 'Solipsism' showcase the airy melodies
of that were to come with his other project Pale Blue, but that is
not typical on this album. If you listen closely, you can hear how
Simonetti's music and dark vibes inspired his then label partner
Johnny Jewel to take his own bands Chromatics and Glass Candy in a different, more cinematic direction.
This was written and recorded years before the Drive soundtrack and all the hoopla around the sudden soundtrack resurgence. In
2011 Mike was asked to submit some songs for a soon to be
released Hollywood remake. He submitted most of the songs from this album, and they were slated for release on the soundtrack,
but the project fell apart, and the film went in a different direction
and changed producers. Soon after, because of all the drama and foolishness, he left Italians Do It Better to start over with 2MR and Pale Blue. This is the nail in the coffin. Godspeed.

Ryan Parks is a mixed media artist, music producer/performer,
and CEO/founder of critically robust cassette tape label, HARSH
RIDDIMS. He was born in College Park, GA and grew up skating
all around Atlanta, soaking up the dense kaleidoscopic cultural
ooze found both in and outside the perimeter of Atlanta. Aside
from his visual practice, which usually takes shape as mixed
media (Jacob Lawrence/Matisse inspired in my opinion!) collage,
he has been releasing music as FIT OF BODY for seven years. Fit
of Body crafts soulful house ballads that draw on freestyle, Bell
Hooks, old school Detroit techno, jazz, and southern rap passed
through a No Wave paradigm. Fit of Body has previously released
work on CGI, DKA, Ransom Note, and his own label,
Harsh Riddims.

"Kawuku Sound is the coming together of UK producers Contours & Cervo and Ugandan percussion troupe Fonkodelis Arkestra. This is the culmination of a month-long creative process that was born out of the Nyege Nyege affiliated Boutiq Studio in Kawuku, Kampala - Uganda.
The music was written and recorded in this shared residency space, home to musicians and visual artists from all over East Africa and beyond, and a hub for Kampala's underground electronic music scene. Boutiq Studio's DIY mentality provided the perfect environment for experimentation, allowing the fusion of these disparate sounds. Kawuku Sound is a reflection of this, merging the hypnotic and trance-inducing percussion of Buganda drumming with elements of contemporary electronics and traditional instrumentation. This the first album release to come out on Manchester imprint Banana Hill as they continue to push the boundaries of afro-electronic sounds.

Nicolas (I:Cube) was busy with his own material, I moved to Amsterdam 3 years ago and as we like to make music in the same space. It took a bit of time but finally it's here; the Dam House EP.I invited Nicolas to visit me last winter, not to do music but just for a cool A'Dam hang out. This turned into 5 intense days of fun production in my studio. It was amazing for both of us to witness how our connection remained intact after all those years and the ideas came really quick. The vibes of the tracks all turned out pretty different, it's a true Chateau Flight kaleidoscope with an epic 10mn Techno track Sargan, a more House vibe, Crazy (Dam House mix), a heavy dark funk drive of Lo and the ambient Crazy(Ambient mix). This record would have not been the same without Redlight records,to whom this record s dedicated. James and Abel left their shop open at night just for us and as children in a candy store we went through the racks looking for samples that formed the inspiration for this ep.

Late Night Tales welcomes back the cult figure and ultimate musical connoisseur, Bill Brewster to compile his second episode of the curated compilation series 'After Dark'. An obscure and timeless DJled journey which begins somewhere out in the near ocean, the waves are rolling and lolling gently into the shore, while a full moon shines on the surface. It's only faint, but somewhere nearby is the sound of bass, pulsing slowly, almost in time to the waves. Welcome back to 'After Dark: Nightshift'. Once again Bill Brewster comes armed with a sensitivity and sense of occasion that few other DJs possess. Delivering another batch of slow cooked musical stews, making sure the tempo stays nice and steady and the emphasis is on funk, soul, grits and corn fried chicken, Brewster has done so much digging, Late Night Tales had to hire a forklift truck and tractor. Among the unreleased nuggets, there's the Fernando mix of The Detachments; inordinate excitement about Gino Fontaine, a tune spotted a year ago but has languished in Andy Meecham's Stafford catacombs ever since. Also unearthed are some hitherto secret recordings between Robert Fripp and The Grid, and there are also some proper club faves here, too, like the daft but brilliant 'Mopedbart' by Hubbabubbaklubb and the luminous 'Boutade' by Mugwump, as well as killer oldies like Salsoul Invention and General Lee

Bridging the gap between the old school and the new, Vibraphone reach out to Minimono, who represent the vanguard of quality Italian house and techno in the 21st century through their affiliation to Bosconi Records. "Oldest Friend" is a twinkling gem of bumping deep house, while "Questions" takes on a classic Detroit sound with a New Jersey swing. "Some Day" is a tougher beast, at least in the drum department, but there's plenty of soul in those melodic elements, and then "Eleven Days" pings off into broken beat territory with terrific results. For all the classic signifiers in these tracks, there's an infectious freshness to the Minimono sound that makes it a perfect fit for Vibraphone.

Bicep, das aus Belfast stammende und in London lebende Produzenten- und DJ-Duo, veröffentlichen Anfang September ihr gleichnamiges Debütalbum via Ninja Tune. Vorab erscheint im August ein treibender Clubtrack namens "Aura" auf 12inch, welcher unter Fans bereits seit einiger Zeit als Highlight während ihrer gefeierten Liveauftritte auf der ganzen Welt gehandelt wird und ihre Passion für Synthesizer aufzeigt. Neben dem exklusiven 12" Mix des Tracks, findet sich auf der B-Seite ein Siebdruck, welcher vom portugiesischen Royal Studio gestaltet wurde.

Maribou State kündigen mit ihrem neuen Album "Kingdoms In Colour", das am 7. September über das Ninja Tune-Sublabel Counter Records erscheint, ihre erste Platte seit ihrem Debüt "Portraits" aus 2015 an. Maribou State, das 2011 als Projekt von Chris Davids und Liam Ivory begann, haben eine Reihe von EPs und Singles veröffentlicht, bevor ihr Debütalbum "Portraits" sie von jetzt auf gleich auf die größten Bühnen dieser Welt katapultierte. Mit einer Live-Show, die sie mit herausragenden Festivalauftritten bei u.a. Glastonbury, Bestival, der Secret Garden Party oder mit einer 32-tägigen Europatournee rund um den Globus führte, spielten sich die zwei Briten im Handumdrehen in die Herzen ihrer Fans. Und auch die Journaille war sogleich begeistert, wie Artikel im Guardian, I-D Magazine oder Vogue zeigen. Bis heute sammelte ihr Album über 80 Millionen Streams und zog Vergleiche mit Acts wie The XX, James Blake und Mount Kimbie aber auch DJ Koze oder Bonobo nach sich.
