* As Resident Advisor's Christine Kakaire wrote in 2011 It's perhaps no mystery, though, why Means and Ways—the transcendent debut of Eric Porter Douglass' alias Afrikan Sciences—seemingly slipped everyone's attention (or rather, slipped my attention), on its release in April. Flying Lotus' freewheeling is of course, ultimately scribbled in the shorthand of a universal language—hip-hop. Douglass' preoccupation with rhythm, however, fixates on the oddities—the mutations, the dualities and instances of bare collision. Together Francisco and Paola are not only the nicest couple of dance music, but as a producer team they are also about to leave a deep mark on the musical landscape. Ocote Soul Sounds is Martin Perna, founder of the New York-based group Antibalas. together with Adrian Quesada, co-founder of the Grammy-winning Latin music powerhouse Grupo Fantasma. Oliver Ho's alias for the less obvious techno stompers has always been full of surprises. Although you can take the man out of the rave, but not the rave out of the man, Raudive's 'Traffic EP' is a retro futuristic team of hermaphrodites. Four tracks that recall metal dance - the genre that never was - as well as disco elements, house hints, a techno taste and wave wonders. A record made for Sven Väth and Trevor Jackson, with 'Beams' already on heavy rotation with Dixon and Âme for a while now. Baby!

These days house music is often about a 4/4 beat and a catchy groove. The idea is to do something simple to which you can get your groove and, and not so much about listening. The borders of electronic dance music makes room for the hypnotic beats, the driving grooves, but not always the melodic universes. Leman & Dieckmann have been making music for several years, both together and apart, but almost all of their music was driven mainly by the beat. But both having an urge to discover the dynamics of melodic synths and melodic percussion they decided to make an album. They agreed that the album had to tell a story, and like so many times before in music the topic became love. The story they try to tell through the music on the album 'Takes Two' is the story of a breakup, the denial of the need of love, and the discover of the fact that often in life it takes two, to be happy. The album features the Swedish/Danish jazz singer TYRA on the groovy house track 'Movement' and the percussion based Balearic inspired track 'The Meeting'. Also the title track 'Takes Two' is featured by the Danish singer Ms. O, who, on top of beautiful Rhodes chords and minimal drums, manages to tell the story of sincerely need and unrequited love. 'The Stranger', a track about the autodidactic act of a one night stand as a part of moving on, is featured by the very talented Danish singer Julie Christiansen. The album, which consist of 10 original tracks, ranges from the deepest atmospheric Deep House to groovy Tech House to old-school trancy house. 'Takes Two' definitely differs from the masses, and bring a breath of fresh air to the circulating sound of 2014 .

Bosq of Whiskey Barons tears into some Stevie. "As" is slowed to a funky slo mo disco, as waves of percussion drive "Another Star" to a galaxy far, far, away.

Banda Black Rio's 'Maria Fumaca' is one of the strongest Brazilian samba-disco-funk-soul-fusion albums of all time.

Banda Black Rio were formed in 1976 by the late Oberdan Magalhães in Rio de Janeiro. They revolutionised 'black instrumental music' at the time with their Brazilian re-interpretation of soul, jazz, funk and disco grooves, inspired by the likes of Tim Maia and reminiscent of Kool & The Gang and Earth, Wind & Fire during their most on-point period of the 1970's. 'Maria Fumaca' is the groups first album, originally released by Atlantic in 1977, a record that bought the group worldwide fame.

The title track is a real stand-out for us and a long term firm favourite. 'Miss Cheryll', more of a disco/AOR jam, was released by RCA UK in 1980 as the track become popular within several London scenes.

In 1997, a quiet, unassuming man of 59 years old named Victor Tavares - better know as Bitori - walks into a studio for the very first time to record a masterpiece which many Cabo Verdean consider to be the best Funaná album ever made. Bitori´s musical adventure had begun long before this point. It was 1954 when he embarked on a journey across the seas to the island of Sao Tomé & Principe. The young man´s hope was to return to Cabo Verde with an accordion.

Following two years of hard labour Bitori had succeeded in saving enough money to acquire what was to become his most valued possession, his cherished instrument. The two month journey back to Santiago, his island of birth, proved time enough to master it. Self taught, Bitori developed his own style, an infectious blaze, that quickly caught the attention of the older generation. Before long Bitori was being asked to share his musical talents, igniting the local festivities around Praia with his music.

But not everybody welcomed the rural accordion-based sound. Perceived as a symbol of the struggle for Cape Verdean independence and frowned upon as music of uneducated peasants, Funaná was prohibited by the Portuguese colonial rulers. Performing it in public or in urban centres had serious consequences - often jail time and torture awaited musicians that were caught in the act'. In light of such persecution the genre of Funaná began to slowly disappear.

In 1975 Cabo Verde achieved independence from Portuguese colonial rule. Along with Cabo Verde's independence came a lifting of the ban placed on Funaná. The musical repercussions in Cabo Verde were plenty - many upcoming artists embraced Funaná, translating and adapting its musical form in new ways. It was not to be until the mid-1990's, however, that Funaná in its traditional form was actually recorded. It was a young singer from Tarafal, Chando Graciosa, who was to play a key role in this event. Upon hearing Bitori, Graciosa immediately felt drawn to Bitori's unique playing style - a raw and passionate sound accompanied by honest lyrics that reflected the harsh reality of the Cabo Verdean working class. He eagerly approached Bitori suggesting they join forces and travel overseas with the objective of taking Funaná beyond its rural roots. The two of them, with others in tow, achieved their goal and travelled to Europe, introducing a receptive European audience to the vibrant energy of Funaná.

Eventually Bitori returned to his beloved Cabo Verde. Graciosa opted to settle in Rotterdam in order to pursue his career - he vowed, however, to bring Bitori across to Holland at a later date to record an album.

In 1997 the time was ripe to immortalise the sound Bitori had shaped over a time span of four decades. Built around a formidable rhythm section, formed of drummer Grace Evora and bass player Danilo Tavares, "Bitori Nha Bibinha" was recorded. The recording catapulted Chando Graciosa to stardom, making him Cabo Verde´s No.1 interpreter of Funaná.

The success in Cabo Verde was phenomenal and Funaná rapidly gained the recognition it deserved, especially in urban dance clubs. Bitori´s songs quickly became standards - classics known and loved throughout the country. The musical success, however, was solely limited to the Cabo Verdean islands - until now!
Analog Africa is proud to contribute to the worldwide promotion of Funaná - the once forbidden sound of the Cabo Verde archipelago - by releasing a worldwide re-issue of Bitori and Chando Graciosa´s legendary recording.

The release will herald Bitori´s first European tour taking place during the summer of 2016. Watch this space! And listen!

Born in 2012 on the west side of Buenos Aires, Agrupación Ilegal Los Imparciales is a mix of traditional cumbia, Peruvian chicha and instrumental psychedelia. A full live act and often transcendental experience, the group utilizes the classic instrumentation of electric bass, electric guitar, farfisa organ and percussion - an homage to older times, without the crutch of electronic sounds and samples. It's a new generation of young and accomplished musicians bringing forward the sounds of a lost era and aesthetic, so relevant in today's modern music landscape. Guitarist Rolando Bruno hails from Buenos Aires and got his start playing a raw brand of Garage and Punk with his band Los Peyotes. A few years back he took a step into the not-so-distant world of Afro-Peruvian Psicodelico that's had a recent renaissance throughout South America. What made his early forays into a more tropical branch of fuzz so unique was his accompanying band-or lack thereof. Armed with an electric guitar and self-produced and recorded backing tracks, Rolando Bruno and his Orquesta MIDI jet-setted across Europe and Japan as a mad scientist one-man band, laying down a relentless style of Chicha Classica gone loopy that earned him several tours and a full-length album with the Swiss imprint, Voodoo Rhythm. Originally recorded in 2011 and now remastered and presented by Names You Can Trust on vinyl for the first time, these two tracks are a glimpse into Rolando's prolific electric madness and a lysergic-laced pointer towards things to come from the talented six-stringer.

The locally celebrated and award winning singer songwriter Jacob Bellens is ready to release his first internationally signed solo album Polyester Skin through hfn Music. Polyester Skin is a wonderful mix of heartfelt lyrics, crisp & modern pop productions alongside Jacob's signature vocals that never fails to captivate the listener. As a household name in his native Denmark Jacob Bellens is no stranger to releasing albums and playing live. Jacob has released many albums with his own bands (Murder, I Got You on Tape and solo) alongside guest performances for other artists and he's played close to 500 shows. Fans of Jacob Bellens know how the music and lyrics of this humble and enigmatic artist crawls under your skin and leaves you moved and wanting for more. With Polyester Skin Jacob Bellens embarks on a new chapter in an already impressive career. Polyester Skin came to life during the past two years in a close collaboration between Jacob and acclaimed Danish producer & DJ Kasper Bjørke.
