Jah Mel & THE RHYTHM FACTORY - Stand Up To It / Guiding Star

Ark Angel Jah Mel is a recording artist, songwriter and musician from Jamaica. Beginning his career as a performer on the stage shows of the Twelve Tribes Of Israel of which he has been a member since his youth, Jah Mel made his debut sharing the stage with artists such as Dennis Brown, Bob Marley, Freddie McGregor, Sugar Minott, Brigadier Jerry & Denroy Morgan. His writing credits include songs written for Marcia Griffiths, Cecile, DaVille, Itana & Jah Mali, for whom he also produced tracks on his debut album El Shaddai. Jah Mel has worked with all of Jamaica's top producers & musician in Jamaica such as the great Sly & Robbie, Steely & Cleevie, Earl Chinna Smith, Steve 'Lenky' Marsden & Donovan Germaine to who's Penthouse label Jahmel was signed.

Jah Mel sees himself as a musical bridge between the original reggae sound & the dancehall sound of today, representing what he calls the real dancehall revolution, merging the spirituality of the old school & the energy of the new school. 'Guiding Star' and 'Stand Up To It' are the perfect examples to overstand this definition. Both song were produced by Roydale Anderson aka Andy's. 'Guding Star' will definitely give you thrills if you are into
deep synth and heavy digital rhythm while the superb piano notes will warm you in the analog style. Beware of 'Guiding Star' dub version called 'Guidance (Dance Mix)' that will break any bunker. 'Stand Up To It' rhythm is an adaptation of one of the most classic Jamaican riddim called 'Heavenless'. You will never know this riddim like before; This version takes the riddim to another level. A positive song with a bionic nuclear bomb
dubwise! Play it loud, Jah is our guiding star!

Soul Sugar (feat Leonardo Carmichael) - Why Can't We Live Together

Everyone loves "Why Can't We Live Together" by Timmy Thomas: how could one resist such a strong music vibe coming with a message more relevant today than ever! It has been covered by the most creative artists more than a few times...

Recorded in Paris and Kingston, the Soul Sugar crew & Leonardo Carmichael make it their own with a sultry reggae groove. Jahno on drums and syndrums, Thomas Naim on guitar, and Guillaume "Gee" Metenier on keyboards and production duties, are delivering the classic hit in all its majesty, in the superior categories of both extended Discomix, and Dub version under the spell of Dubmaster extraordinaire Dennis Bovell!

What to say about the breathtaking interpretation of Leonardo Carmichael Growing up in Jamaica, Leonardo learnt many a song from his father Glendon Joseph McFarlane, who would sing to his mother Geraldine, who sang in a choir. Leonardo grew up as a drummer and a singer in churches. Through a mutual friend, he met Nastassja Hammond, daughter of Beres Hammond, with whom he started writing and releasing music for various artists including Courtney John and Kreesha Turner. Leonardo has a wide appreciation for diverse genres but keep an International Reggae and Dancehall feel at the core of his music. It can be said Leonardo has faith & soul to the bone...

KING TUBBY - Never Run Away-Dub Plate Specials

King Tubby's Hometown Hi-Fi was one of the great Sound System in Jamaica.
It also proved a fantastic outlet for the Dub Plate Specials cut at Tubby's studio, providing exclusive cuts to be played out and to entice the dance's audience.
The tracks at the time were mainly cut over producer Bunny'Striker'Lee rhythms, that Bunny stored at Tubby's studio, 18 Drumilly Avenue, Kingston, Jamaica.
The versions were given eclusive plays at Tubby's sound before some finding their way on to vinyl, ass the b-side version cut to it's a-side vocal.
It proved so popular that the records were often brought fir its version side over its vocal counterpart.
We have compiled a selection of cuts that were all tried and tested on Tubby's Home Town Hi-Fi Sounf System and that worked a great set of Bunny Lee's rhythms in fine style.
Some of these cuts found a release as version b-sides but many on this set were exclusive Dub Plates unreleased until now.
As Cornell Campbell says on track one of the set 'King Tubby and Bunny Lee will never go away'
Hope you enjoy the set......

Jitta Riddim

12inchDSRS003
Dub-Stuy Records
19.04.2018

Following the success of last year's Kunta Kinte 2017 riddim, Brooklyn-based label and collective Dub-Stuy add a new instalment to their popular dancehall inspired series with a fresh riddim from in-house producer DJ Madd, featuring international vocalists from Jamaica, Spain and Bermuda. Jitta Riddim is a brand new production from DJ Madd; a sturdy yet spacious riddim carried forward by a lilting melody and guitar stabs that are anchored by slapping snares, dub flourishes and a rolling bassline. This is a weighty but energetic riddim with the dancefloor in mind. Bringing the riddim to life are a trio of vocalists representing the roots and global expansion of dancehall and sound system music. Spain's Sr. Wilson delivers an anthem in the making with 'Zapatillas', a song dedicated to all the sneaker heads worldwide who like to sport fresh kicks when they hit the dancefloor. Singing in his native Spanish and English, Sr. Wilson shares tales of daily shoe addiction around a catchy refrain that name checks the best known brands. His blend of reggaeton-flavoured autotune and kicks geek outs is sure to resound loudly around clubs worldwide. Backing him is Jamaican veteran deejay Cutty Ranks , a man who's been lending his distinct flow to productions for over 30 years. On 'Double Trouble' Cutty speaks to the daily realities of life on the streets and the ills keeping people down, warning of the trouble that awaits those in charge. Wrapping up the release is Bermuda's Troy Berkley who aims his vocal rifle straight to the orange-skinned resident of the White House, spitting rapid fire lyrics about the deteriorating state of things in 2018 America. Lace up your sneakers and get ready to move and chant with Dub-Stuy's new riddim.

R-Dug's new album "Eternal Dub Quantum" is both energetic and burlesque. It's taken The Team more than 2 years to finish and polish this LP. We'll find 2 guitarists : Florent Fusiller who's already worked on the last 2 albums and who infuses a vibrante and festive rhythm. And Fabien Fustinoni, guitare player and singer who can go from a brazilian beat to a live electro style, and who collaborated on 2 albums in 2008. Without forgetting, Gautier BL, lights and sound ingeneer, responsible for the remarquable arrangements on this album. Two weeks in the recording studio with this man, fascinating with his creativity and spontaneity, will make this 3rd album, a surprising opus. As for RDug,he remains indefinable. He maintains his freedom, by keeping away from the clichés. He reinventes his own style with each album and surprises us, once again, with a kitsch side and some french lyrics, which in today's world, liberate us from our ego. This unusual trip, on dub's earthy roads, will have you huming and singing. 13 tracks that won't fail to raise your interest.

BLUNDETTO & KEN BOOTHE - HAVE A LITTLE FAITH

The first single from Blundetto's forthcoming album sees the French producer collaborate with a true great of Jamaican music, the legendary reggae vocalist Ken Boothe. Enjoy the killer A side on this dinked 7' then flip it over for dub and repeat... Ken 'Everything I Own' Boothe played a significant part in covering Sir Coxsone's Studio One walls with gold - and goodness knows that label fostered its share of legends. Collaborating with the master, Blundetto could have laid it on thick with heavy production; instead alongside his discreet partner Blackjoy, he created a gorgeous production using the purest of Jamaican music, proving yet again that time has nothing on the suave tones of Mr. Rocksteady.

Soul Jazz Records Presents - Maximum 70's And 80's Early Dancehall Sounds

By the 1970's Studio One and Clement 'Sir Coxsone' Dodd had already proved himself to be the defining force in Reggae for almost two decades. From running the Downbeat sound system on the lawns and yards of Kingston in the late 1950's to opening Studio One at 13 Brentford Road at the start of the 1960's, ushering in Ska and Rocksteady and establishing the careers of most of Jamaica's artists - everyone from Bob Marley and The Wailers, Ken Boothe, Toots and The Maytals, The Skatalites, Jackie Mittoo and more - Clement Dodd had until this point dominated the Jamaican musical world.

And yet, incredibly, Clement Dodd was barely half way through his musical path, maintaining Studio One's number one position in the Jamaican music scene throughout the 1970's with a combination of musical and creative innovation and an endless capacity to adapt and create new musical fashions. By the end of the 1970's Dancehall had become the defining sound on the island. Dancehall was essentially a tribute by other Jamaican producers and artists to the classic music of Studio One created in the 1960's as young artists across the island created new songs, while musicians recreated these original classic foundation Studio One rhythms. As on other occasions, Clement Dodd rose to this new musical challenge by producing a whole new era of classics for Studio One.

The roots of Dancehall begin with the DJs of the early 1970s, who were the first to sing new material over earlier classic rhythms. Early DJ pioneers such as Dillinger and Prince Jazzbo both feature here toasting over classic songs - The Mad Lad's Ten to One and The Eternals' Queen of the Minstrel. But it is the new wave of artists who arrived at Studio One at the onset of Dancehall which enabled Studio One to maintain it's number one status as the whole of Kingston's rival music producers - Channel One, Joe Gibbs and many others - attempted to challenge this position.

Sugar Minott, Michigan and Smiley, Willie Williams, Lone Ranger had all grown up listening to the classic Studio One music of the 1960s and were able to pay the greatest compliment to the label by creating the defining new music of this new era with songs that combined all the musical and technological developments of the 1970's - dub, deejaying, discomixes, syndrums, synthesizers and more - into the sound of the future: Dancehall.

Throughout this era Clement Dodd also continued to work with a number of original and returning artists - such as Alton Ellis, Horace Andy, Freddie McGregor, Johnny Osbourne - updating old rhythms and creating new ones while employing the in-house band variously known as The Brentford All-Stars/Rockers/Disco Set to update these sounds in order to maintain Studio One's number one position as the defining force in Reggae.

This is Soul Jazz Records' latest new collection of classic and rare Studio One recordings and is released on triple LP (+ download code), deluxe CD and digital album.

JahYu - Lineage of the Sun

JahYu: the Korean word for 'freedom', this is an artist whose music is rooted in the notion of freedom, freedom of sound, freedom of expression, freedom from mind and freedom of the soul. JahYu uses his creative freedom to connect directly with his ancestors and create music that somehow transports the listener through time and space. Oriental flute and string melodies slide effortlessly amongst powerful roots-based dubstep, creating a sound that is unique and full of flavour. This enigmatic Korean-German producer blends both sides of his heritage, the digital steppers that emerged from Europe in the 1990's alongside the traditional oriental music of his mother's homeland, Korea, augmented by a deeper exploration of contemporary bass music. It is said that JahYu's family descend from the same lineage of Go Jumong, the founder of the great Goguryeo Kingdom of the Far East, a people renown for their ancestral worship and unique musical expression. Goguryeo music was even adopted as official court music for the powerful Sui and Tang dynasties of China, many times throughout history these Chinese dynasties were at war with Goguryeo, however, the music of the enemy, Goguryeo, was still able to flourish in China and has been consistently performed across Asia for hundreds of years. Perhaps this explains the majestic qualities of JahYu's music. JahYu's productions provide us with the opportunity to discover our ancestral roots through music. Roots music is not a sound, it is a feeling and a feeling that JahYu is able to evoke with profound intensity.

EN:
The mix of Dub and Techno is not exactly new. However, JPatterson found a way to combine these genres in a way that checks all the boxes to be classified as fresh and exciting. His rustic Prog-a-Dub grooves burst with reckless danceability, the sound of his tumpet has an emotional intensity that simply doesn't exist in the digital music domain. But the catchiest element of his track Elevator is yet another one: It's his voice and its contagious casualness. The Dub Version of this track is a bright summer day turned into rhythm and melody. It gets even more exciting than this, as a hand-selected group of party heads from the Acker family has remixed Elevator. Timboletti turned it into a slow, delirious afterhour groove (digital only). Dole & Kom redesigned it into an understated anthem. And Mollono.Bass created an energetic rhythm environment for the weightless trombone that feels like it's vibrating right in middle between the original and the Dub Version of Elevator.

Phil Pratt & Friends - The War is on Dub Style

Highly sought after dub album, that has not been available since its original release in the early 1980s.

In the early 1980s, one London recording studio became the favoured hang-out for visiting Jamaican producers and British reggae musicians alike. Easy Street Studios in Bethnal Green had humble beginnings, but was soon pouring out an impressive run of hit tunes by artists like Sugar Minott, Winston Reedy, Alton Ellis and Barrington Levy.

Founded by Eddy 'Eddyman' Williams, the studio soon recruited a team of local eastenders, like Dean 'Joe 90' Richards, Mike Stephenson, Jeff Chandler and Stuart Breed, who became known as the Easy Street Crew.

Phil Pratt had an illustrious career in Jamaica stretching back to the rocksteady years of the 60s, scoring huge hits such as 'My Heart Is Gone' and 'Artibella', but by the 80s he was increasingly finishing his productions in London. Easy Street was a low budget studio with professional but fairly limited equipment - a Soundcraft TS24 mixing desk, a Roland RE301 Chorus Echo, an AKG BX5 reverb, and an MXR flanger/doubler - and a speedy way of working which suited the incoming rush of reggae producers.

'The War Is On Dub Style' is an album that typifies Phil's working methods in those days, with the backing tracks recorded at Joe Gibbs' Studio in Jamaica, and overdubs and mixing done in London.

By the mid 80s Easy Street was scoring further successes with homegrown lovers' rock and deejay tunes, and to support their breakthrough acts the Easy Street Crew started to go out on the road and into concert venues and dancehalls.

Ras Michael & The Sons Of Negus - Promised Land Sounds

'Rockin live ruff and tuff', this is the untrammelled counterpart to Dadawah, six years later in 1980, fresh from the Black Ark: free, rawly spiritual trance-music, a full-force nyabinghi freak-out.
The drummers are headlong and rollicking, thunderous and explosive. Even more so than Dadawah, the mix is ecstatically echoey, giddily dubwise without let-up. Ras Michael himself sings from the mountain-top, like he just don't care — at the top of his lungs, in voices, screeching like a bird — with the delirious abandonment otherwise owned in reggae by Lee Perry.
Amongst the uncredited performances swirled into proceedings, there are squiggles of flute straight from the Upsetters song-book, the minor-key organ stabs and abstraction of electric space-jazz, and sax-playing more attuned to the Headhunters than the Blazing Horns. (I Ya I in particular is a stunning fifteen minutes.)
This is the real thing, music without affectation. Pure reggae. Sun Ra fans should love it, anyone with ears to hear.
Prepared and manufactured at Abbey Road, D&M and Pallas, beautifully presented in rigid, old-school, tip-on sleeves, with matt-coated fronts and untreated-paper backs, 180g vinyl.
'These sounds are sounds of inspiration and love and culture to the universal benefit of mankind... So therefore meditate and stop hate.'
Very hotly recommended.

After the first vinyl release (Analog Dub Sessions) Dub Communication is back on 7". This time Frenk is using his Korg MS20 to lay down an analog 'Militant Dub' bass foundation. Creating subs, stabs and catchy melody lines. A live played Melodica, dipped in spring verbs, adding a human touch to the mix. Futhermore we got atmospheric chords and heavy drums rhythms, as we know, Frenk likes to produce. For the B side, there's a heavy remix from Belgium dub producer Digid. His signature bass growl takes over, filtering and phasing through the audio spectrum. He adds more weight to the drums and new melodies on top. From the half time to the steppers rhythm as Frenk took it the other way around.

Deep Dive Dub +cd

12inchEB119LP / 133241
Echo Beach
22.03.2018

Swiss timepieces are renowned for their precision, and they tick along nicely even under water. The mechanics, the cogs, the striking mechanism, the chronograph movements, the repeaters, the speed-up.... The fact that the cantons of this maximum-precision country should produce ultra-chilled SLO MO Dub like this, a style that has avid fans all over the world, is something we have DS & TH to thank for. The band are known for the formidable interior dynamism of their composition skills, their classic riddim craftsmanship, the psychedelic sound of their guitars, the pounding bass lines that approach infrasound levels, the space sounds and their grandiose sound dimensions. This is dub as dub can. Like few other electronically influenced styles, over the years DUB has shown itself impervious and resistant to all manner of short-lived trends. Like Bud Spencer recently laconically stated in one of his rare interviews: "DUB makes the difference." There are probably few people who - regardless of which music ghetto they inhabit - have not encountered DUB at some point.

On the new album DEEP DIVE DUB the band dives deeper than Jaques Piccard's team during their record-breaking dive in Trieste in the sixties. The focus of this repetition is the fusion of reggae, even though, instead of the lightness that is usually inherent in reggae, the album focuses on heavy grooves, grooves that drift off into fat, dark, mature places. With a hypnotic power, the musicians - all of whom are trained jazz instrumentalists - dive into a world of Space-Rock-Dub-Electro. On a couple of the tracks the band invited the Lucerne-based experimental vocalist Bruno Amstad (who has previously worked with John Zorn and Phil Minton) to contribute.Neither a slave to the great Jamaican heroes of the seventies nor lost in the great wide world of electronic dub - DS & TH tread their own path, reducing and abstracting as they dive deeper and deeper. Irony is the sword of the disenfranchised... and so DUB SPENCER & TRANCE HILL will continue to roll on - like the film duo they borrowed their name from - over the sliders and knobs of the mixing desks of this world!

Bunny Lee & The Aggrovators - Super Dub Disco Style

'Super Dub Disco Style' features the dub mixing skills of two of the most multi-talented engineers to come out of Jamaica. Pat Kelly is mainly known for the haunting singing voice that powered dozens of hit songs, and nearly had him signed to The Beatles' Apple label. And Stanley 'Barnabas' Bryan is also a deejay, percussionist and drummer, who played on big tunes for Sugar Minott, Junior Reid and Tenor Saw. Both fell under the spell of King Tubby's seismic experiments with dub music in the early 1970's, Pat Kelly as an engineer at Tubby's own studio in Waterhouse, and Barnabas at the larger Channel One Studio, run by Jo Jo and Ernest Hoo Kim.

Whereas most Channel One dub mixes sound very different from those mixed at King Tubby's, it is much harder to distinguish some dubs mixed by Barnabas, as he also introduced a filtering effect in imitation of the famous hi-pass filter, or 'squawky', at King Tubby's. It seems likely that 'Money In Your Pocket Dub', 'Super Rockers Dub', 'Portobello Special Dub' and 'The Aggrovators Special Dub' were all mixed by Barnabas at Channel One, applying an EQ sweep across the echo return.

The remaining tracks were mixed by Pat Kelly, and are mostly versions from the Ken Boothe album 'I'm Just A Man' which had been voiced in one night at King Tubby's. Pat Kelly remembers the original filter at King Tubby's as being like a secret weapon, which no one else could understand.

Pat Kelly: We had this one hi pass filter, which you could patch into whatever track you want. It effected like if you use an EQ, like a graphic, but it was this knob that you could rotate, so you get a different effect than if you was to push them up individually. When you rotate it, it's all simultaneously, and you get a different effect, you're skipping from one frequency within a few seconds. You generally use it on the track with the rhythm, the guitar, the piano, etcetera, because it's more effective at that frequency. Also often on the drum track to pick out the hi-hat - it's extra effective on those frequencies.

I probably mix about thirty LPs for Bunny Lee in my time. And in those times half the music you hear by other producers, it was really Bunny Lee give them the riddim track, and they just say they was the producer. And Bunny Lee never said anything - he never used to sell the track, just give it, and he still doing that to this day. Everybody's trying to be like Bunny, but there's only one Bunny Lee!'

Musicians include:
Sly & Robbie, Aston 'Family Man' Barrett, Earl 'Chinna' Smith, Ansell Collins, Jackie Mittoo, Gladstone Anderson, Bobby Ellis & Tommy McCook.
