Gardland - Improvisations Ep

Following the great unspooling of 2013's Syndrome Syndrome, Gardland and RVNG Intl. step back into the duo's not-sodistant past with Improvisations, three live performances ripped from local Austrailan radio in early 2012. The aural impetus behind the artists and label joining forces, this triptych of tone lashed tracks captures the duo in exhilarating, uninhibited form.

John Wizards - Muizenberg

Fresh from supporting Jagwar Ma on a UK and European tour, the Cape Town band John Wizards drop the lush 'Muizenberg' as a single. Taken from their critically acclaimed and eponymous debut, the track exhudes southern hemisphere sunshine with a warm guitar figure sending a gentle bounce through the track. Lead singer John delivers a gentle falsetto before the track drops into a scuffy bass coda. Beatmaker extraodinaire Seiji turns a gentle piano line that you barely notice in the original into the centrepiece of his mix, running rhythmic, crunchy kicks and snares alongside bubbling filtered effects. On the flip The 2 Bears create a thing of beauty. A slow, rippling mix that's absorbed all the sunshine of the original, turning it inside-out and building the track up gently over a slow house beat, before dropping in gentle repeated vocals over the epic nine minute timespan.

Dj Sliink / Kingthing - Jansen / Invasive Species Rmxs

"DJ Sliink, springing from the Jersey Club scene, has built an impressive reputation for his contributions to North American dance music. So much so that Vibe Magazine included him on their list of 30 DJ's to watch. His angular, spare take on club music can be described as straight forward, as much as a punch in the face can be described as straight forward anyway.

Elevater Action's cadre of producers and DJ's emerged from the nascent UK Funky scene of 2010, running a monthly event that followed the bleeding edge of that sound as it morphed into the nebulous genre of "Bass Music". The collective hosted DJ Sliink to a packed house in 2012, and have featured a diverse range of artists including HXdb, Distal, Donga, Cosmic Revenge, Prism, and Mike G.

As a label, Elevater Action puts aside ego and theatrics to focus on forward thinking, quality releases for fans of the ever-evolving concept of the sound system. There's no better way of expelling hubris than using their third vinyl release to again showcase artists they respect and admire, this time via two of the best remixes of Elevater Action's own productions.

DJ Sliink's reworking of FBOM's haunting 'Jansen' gives a muscular edge to the original, with crushing bass and a stark intensity that's set to tear up vinyl sets everywhere. A longtime favorite of the EA crew, KingThing reworks Dylan C's fantastic "Invasive Species" into a thumping, slow-burn of uncontrollable gyration. The propulsive, but dark brand of minimalism exhibited by both tracks is primed to ignite the dance floor. "

Bass Clef - Acid Tracts

Bass Clef

Acid Tracts

12inchALT16
Alter
17.03.2014

The next release on Alter will come from Hackney-based electronic voyager Ralph Cumbers, aka Bass Clef. An expanded double vinyl edition of his acclaimed 2013 cassette Acid Tracts, originally released late last year via Cumbers' own Magic + Dreams label, its seven dense and immersive club tracks comprise his most expansive and multi-faceted work to date. They meld his modular synthesiser's hard-edged tones with grinding drum machine rhythms, traveling from the anarchic techno of 2012's Reeling Skullways album still further outward into the void. Acid Tracts represents the latest stage in the ongoing evolution of Cumbers' music. He first cut his teeth in Bristol mid last decade, crafting scuzzy takes on dubstep with an arsenal of analogue hardware and a trombone - an approach quite distinct from the software-based sub-bass experimentation of his then-contemporaries. In the years since, he's continued to follow a highly individual path, even as he's taken stylistic divergences towards cosmic techno (with Reeling Skullways and its subsequent singles) and the freeflowing improvised modular synth jams released under the Some Truths pseudonym. Acid Tracts is his first Bass Clef release to unite those two strands of his work, drawing the fluidity and instinct-led feel of his Some Truths music into tightly structured club tracks. With punning titles like 'Strings Of Death' and 'Apathy Flash', they play cheeky tribute to Cumbers' personal history and ongoing love of the atmosphere and attitude of rave, acid house and jungle. Throughout Acid Tracts the high-pitched, wriggling tones of his modular reimagine the TB-303's signature acid splatter in crisp hi-def, making for a dazzling and mind-altering listen. For the recording of Acid Tracts, Cumbers hooked his modular synthesiser up to a borrowed MFB Drumcomputer, before laying down the entire record's worth of tracks across the course of a single weekend. "In hindsight I'm not 100% sure how I made some of these tracks, of which noises came from what, of which cables went where, et cetera," he recalls. "I do remember it, though, as a special weekend of total solitude and immersion, with the moon rising high and shining bright into the studio windows." The one exception was 19-minute euphoric epic and album centrepiece 'Lower State Of Unconsciousness', which was originally recorded during the sessions for Reeling Skullways. For Alter's expanded vinyl edition of Acid Tracts, the original limited cassette release's six tracks are joined by an additional track recorded during the same sessions - the taut and drone-laden house of 'Music Sounds Better Without You'. Its full release on vinyl is an appropriate way to open what looks set to be a busy and important year for Cumbers, with this coming spring also seeing upcoming Bass Clef releases through PAN and Public Information, and the promise of future Some Truths material to come

Hyperdub
22.08.2014

In 2014 Hyperdub is 10 years old. Founded by DJ and producer Kode9, the label has grown from its humble origins as a left-field dubstep label, and spread out to function as a cross-genre hub, absorbing sounds and ideas, keeping listeners on their toes, and refreshing itself while still maintaining its core sensibilities. To celebrate, Hyperdub will release four compilations which cluster thematic highlights from the last five years, all augmented with new material, as well as staging a number of international showcase events across the year. First up comes 'Hyperdub [aJ] CD 1-10 | 1', a double CD covering the label's dance floor dimension. Disc 1 features almost all new material from Hyperdub regulars such as Kode9 & The Spaceape, Quarta 330 and DJ Rashad, along with old and new allies. Opening with the oddball groove of DVA's 'Mad Hatter', we move into young Detroit producer Kyle Hall's 'Girl U So Strong', a slow builder that culminates in a blissed-out g-funk groove, Mala's 'Expected', a rock solid, melancholy half-step bulldozer, Kuedo's 'Mtzpn', Morgan Zarate's recent martial snare anthem, 'Kaytsu' and Helix's club-ready remix of Kode9's 2013 'Xingfu Lu'. We also welcome back Flowdan, who appeared on early label hit 'Skeng,' with the malevolent, Footsie-produced 'Ambush'. The pace picks up on the second half of the CD with a volley of woozy and twisted footwork from most of the key members of Chicago's Teklife crew. Taso & Djunya's Darwinian 'Only The Strongest Survive' descends into DJ Spinn's bombastic 'All My Teklife', DJ Taye's fizzling R&B jam, 'Get Em Up', the immaculate diva vocal cut-up of 'I'm Gonna Get You', DJ Rashad and Gantman's squiggly banger 'Acid LIfe', and the stone cold 'Icemaster' by Heavee. Earl, Rashad & Taye's 'Bombaklot' takes Hyperdub full circle with a yardcore bomb like a 2014 upgrade of the label's early days. Disc 1 closes with 'Chasing A Beast', a new gnarly hip hop track from Kode9 & The Spaceape, and Tokyo-based veteran ally Quarta330, who crafts in 'Hanabi' an epic, uptempo synthesiser jam. Disc 2 spotlights 17 high points of Hyperdub's last half-decade, proven dance floor material from the grittier end of UK funky, grime, dubstep, hip hop and footwork. Artists featured include Burial, Cooly G, Champion, DVA, Funkystepz, Ill Blu, Walton, Ikonika, Kode9 & The Spaceape, Morgan Zarate, Mark Pritchard & Om'mas Keith, Terror Danjah & Riko, DOK, LV ft. Okmalumkoolkat, and DJ Rashad. 'Hyperdub [aJ] CD 1-10 | 1' is more an ammunition belt than an album. Keep it locked for news of [aJ] CD 1-10 | 2, [aJ] CD 1-10 | 3 and [aJ] CD 1-10 | 4 across 20

Two Words - Rain Dog

For Samuel Evans, or Rain Dog, creating this album was a vast experiment to combine different attempts of blending more traditional elements of song writing and composition with the more contemporary influences of modern electronic dance and bass music, all within the confines of his computer and chair...
Being compelled by melody and variation, Rain Dog, by his own admission, never had much talent for songwriting in terms of lyrics. To circumvent this, however, he focuses on creating a narrative within the music through the combination of synth work and samples. He starts with anything that sparks an interest or emotion in him - Tom Waits, Joni Mitchel, Ella Fitzgerald, Portico Quartet and moments from movies, samples like these usually work as a foundation for the tracks. He then adds layers of unique and organic synth sounds (a notion he finds quite interesting when working entirely from a digital platform) before eventually completing the production with the beat.

11.02.2014

Christian Marclay, DJ Rashad, LFO, Dilla, Luc Ferrari... Chorus is the new single from Holly Herndon, the inimitable artist and technologist responsible for 2012's acclaimed album, Movement. Another evolution in her production technique, Chorus bridges multiple disciplines and spaces to blur the politic between natural and synthetic. For 'Chorus', Herndon sampled her daily browsing experience, channeling YouTube, Skype and other audio sources across the web for data that freely forms atop a bumping beat. Much like online browsing, 'Chorus' creates a coherent/incoherent experience from disparate conceptual and contextual sources. 'Chorus' continues Herndon's emphasis on vocal processing, crafted with polyphonic passages from live vocal takes and re-synthesized instances of her own voice and those foraged and sampled. 'Chorus' may come as a stylistic deviation from Movement, but more accurately continues Herndon's practice outside of genre orthodoxy — a stratosphere where multiple styles and histories are experienced in her personal laptop space. In contrast to the laborious studio effort that went into the a-side, 'Solo Voice' was tracked in a single take. 'Solo Voice' takes a rhythmic, polyphonic vocal effect customized by Herndon and spreads it across a spectrum of song to sputter for a unsettling minimalist accomplishment. Chorus is a timely reminder ahead of Herndon's next album that her universe is one meticulously crafted with each creative and technological discovery.

Enter Mumdance & Logos. Having been introduced to the label earlier this year via 'Drum Boss', on Tectonic Plates Volume 4, and generally killing it both together or independently with their releases on the Keysound imprint - the production duo are currently championing a sonic that is set to spread, mutate and progress the sound of the underground. True to the original spirit of Tectonic. With a sense of grand simplicity the duo have managed to seamlessly merge elements of UK hardcore-jungle, pounding, mesmerising techno, gut-wrenching grime and paranoid dubstep into the dancefloor beast that is 'Legion'. Rising panic is struck immediately from the dissonant strings that lead you into the rhythm, before luring you into an ambushing in the foam a pounding, relentless, weighted kick pattern. The vibe builds until a calculated submarine blip signals the start of an emerging, creeping reese baseline - ready to fully terrorise any dancefloor, anywhere. This is a weapon you want in your DJ bag. 128bpm danger zone. Flip for 'Proto', continuing the old-skool jungle vibes and rolling them out, again, at 128bpm. The intro charges up with a muted 4/4 kick pattern, and a demented hoover sample - getting progressively more aggressive as it develops. Then comes the rush of broken breakbeats and 808s, cutting forwards and backwards, unsettling your balance and wrong-footing your expectations. 100% killer. ´

Todd Osborn - Michigan Dream Ep

Michigan native Todd Osborn, also known as Soundmurderer, also known as Osborne, also known as Superstructure... ran the first Drum & Bass record store in the Detroit area, the legendary Dubplate Pressure shop and would later own his own label, Rewind Records.

Todd has also built airplanes, computers and hovercrafts. Or has he

At this point we need to just accept a mystery. May of 2012, I flew out to Detroit to play DEMF and called Todd to see if he would be available to grab a bite and chat some shit before the show. A few hours later Todd arrived in his converted Police Cruiser with spot light to take me away from the festival to his house to listen to unreleased joints by him and his heroes. That planted the seed in my head to work with Todd. A year later at Red Bull Music Academy in NYC, where Todd had built the recording studio, I finally had my shit together enough to properly propose an EP.

Here, Blueberry Records presents to you the "Michigan Dream" EP. With support from Cosmin TRG, XXXY, Mike Paradinas, Eclair Fifi, Illumsphere, Altered Natives, Mike Q and FaltyDL.

Across 4 tracks, from Hip Hop to jacking vocal House, from druggy Techno to Braindance, Michigan Dream has it all.

It's a vibe. Get into it.

Jacques Greene - On Your Side

On Your Side

08.08.2013

Since Montreal native Jacques Greene, 24, emerged with his first solo releases in late 2010 - The Look 12" EP (LuckyMe) and Another Girl 12" Single (LuckyMe, a Pitchfork Top 100 Track of the Year) - he has drawn upon real R&B, House & Techno to create a modern palette which served to influence contemporaries from Jamie XX to Disclosure and Julio Bashmore. But with the UK offering such excellent cross-over Dance successes in 2013 it can be easy to forget where our musical landscape was just tree years ago when Jacques Greene's faceless demos began to creep online. Just prior to the young Canadian's debut, US R&B had recently combined with the worst of European 4/4 Electro House & Trance to form a bottle-service delivery of compressed Pop-Dance to our charts. Greene represented something wholly contrary. A young outsider who, in isolation, was experimenting with fusing the fraught sentiment and sexuality of modern R&B and movement and soul of classic House and Techno. Not in any way retro, there are very few modern producers who can claim to have mastered their form - using original analogue equipment and the very essence of their influences to create such expressive and rich dance music.

LM015 - On Your Side EP is the product of many years of experimentation at the boundary between R&B and Dance music. It is only now after a slew of taste maker releases in dance music that we find Jacques Greene as an accomplished writer and arranger aspiring to work in song format. With our lead single featuring Tom Krell aka How To Dress Well, this is not the exaltation of a lone R&B hook that we are used to but rather a fully developed original song that finds it's place perfectly balanced between both artists. It's unashamed hook and addictive bridge in a beautifully delicate falsetto which rides on top of assured shuffle of percussion. No one here can claim this is a Summer record - the air of cool it evokes is for 4am at any time of year. This is the crystallization of something JG has been working towards. All his tastes reconciled into one stunning moment of classic house / modern house, classic pop / modern R&B.

The remaining tracks too, show JG's development. B1 Faithful returns to JG's vocal sample hallmark but this time without the processing. This is not a percussive use of vocal but rather an upfront gospel-inflected hook in the vein of classic US house courtesy of good friend Olivier Day Soul. Then to close we return to the deep instrumentals we have expect from JG. B2 Quicksand first appeared as an 'untitled' highlight in Greene's takeover at BBC 6Music in October. Now with 160,000+ plays on Soundcloud Quicksand finds its place as the euphoric finale of this satisfying three track EP which further establishes Jacques Greene, still young and evolving; a clear leader in his lane.

Now touring with fully analogue live performance and vocalists - with additional visual gallery show and separate DJ sets, Jacques Greene is stepping out like never before.

In short, Feadz's music is a quintessential Edbangerian alloy. Feadz is a total music geek on a constant search for new things to play or to sample, and an erudite of vinyl production, illustrated by the namedropping of super edgy labels delivered via Kito's voice on 'Electric Empire'.

'Instant Alpha' is the result of a fifteen-year journey for Feadz. These 13 tracks are the expression of his hybrid and concise spirit; vivacious, electrocuted, colorful, cheeky dance music in 3 or 4 minute tracks. Joyful, unifying and open party music. Typically Ed Banger.

12.08.2013

Taking the boom of British bass culture and marrying it to the sweet slickness of classic American R&B, AlunaGeorge - aka Aluna Francis and producer George Reid - are excited to announce the details of their eagerly awaited debut album 'Body Music', released on July 29th via Island Records.

In the 12 months since their first release went viral, AlunaGeorge's DIY video for 'You Know You Like It' has clocked up over 2 million views, the band were crowned the most blogged artist of 2012, they sold out a European tour, performed at Moschino's catwalk show during London Fashion Week and made the top 3 for both last year's prestigious BRITS Critics Choice Award and the BBCs Sound of 2013 (#2). On top of all of the above, with no surprise, Aluna has also kicked off a career in fashion having been signed by NEXT Models.

These accolades, and the universal praise heaped upon the duo's shoulders, were of course a direct result of the incredibly fresh and unique music the pair are producing. Their second single 'Your Drums, Your Love' followed 'You Know You Like It' in October 2013 and latest single 'Attracting Flies' released in April this year has now sold over 100,000 copies. In between, AlunaGeorge scored a #2 hit single in the UK following their amazing collaboration with Disclosure on future classic 'White Noise'.

Fast becoming an unstoppable force in 2013 with their signature sound that has captured the attention of critics and fans alike, AlunaGeorge are turning British pop on its head. The summer of 2013 looks set to be theirs for the taking as the debut album 'Body Music' drops and a new 'You Know You Like It' EP on July 21st which includes the refreshed single and the B-side, 'Bad Idea'. The pair are also putting the finishing touches to a brand new video which drops in the coming weeks.

To have this release on R&S feels like the most natural thing in the world. This is the label that put out Lemon D and Jacob's Optical Stairway (aka 4 Hero) in the 1990s, placing drum'n'bass firmly within the continuum of international electronic music - and there is nobody better placed to draw the links between the current d'n'b scene and the wider world of techno, electronica and bass music than dBridge.
The record opens with a sample of simultaneously hilarious and deadly serious Jamaican dread wisdom, that leads into the Skeptical collaboration 'Move Way'. This is track is a perfect example of the half-tempo rhythms that dBridge helped pioneer, a kind of d'n'b parallel to the deepest dubstep yet which still maintains the momentum of 170bpm parent genre through subliminal flickers of percussion. 'Death of a Drum Machine' is a more standard d'n'b roller rhythmically but is embellished by filmic piano chords and absolutely exquisite production. Finally 'Plain to See' steps outside genre completely. Again with the half-step/double time thing going on, it's simply a piece of awesome electronica: a love letter to vintage electronic drum sounds yet utterly modern, rich in slowly unfolding layers of synth melody and harmony, and the perfect counterpart to the other two tracks on this perfectly structured EP.

Champion / Prince Jammy - Hydra Island

Ever-prolific UK Funky producer Champion steps up for his first release of the year , after a busy 2012 which saw the release of ferocious dancefloor shaker 'Crystal Meth' on premier Grime label Butterz, and the infectious vocal anthem 'Crazy' on his own Formula Records imprint. On this strictly limited, white label style, vinyl only outing, A-side 'Prince Jammy'finds Champion in familiar territory, with quick-fast, sharp drums and claps anchoring the percussion and his signature guttural bassline in full gear, making this one another addition to the already glowing catalogue of buy-on-sight releases from the young Londoner. On the flip, 'Hydra Island' will be familiar to those who have seen him out in clubland, as it's the track that he has been opening sets with for the past year or so. Propelled by the infectious swinging rhythm of ultra crispy bongo drums, the track is characterized by a low end bass melody that growls with the intent and purpose of keeping the dancefloor moving, as Champion's signature tracks have proven to do all too well.

The Crescent
25.07.2013

Rowl delivers The Crescent's fourth release with two original works packaged alongside a stunning remix from ASC. True to form, 004 is another beautifully varied EP exploring the depth of dub techno with influence from the UK's signature garage and dubstep sounds packaged across a plethora of BPMs.
*Already with a string of releases under his belt on imprints such as ICUAudio, M.U.D and Smoking Sessions, Rowl has stepped up once again to deliver an EP that has both headphone and dance floor appeal; one for the chin-strokers and DJs alike.
*The EP opens with the beautiful 'Egipto' - its careful shuffle mixed with Rowl's signature sculpted dub chords set the tone for the rest of the release and showcases his talent at combining influences, bringing a truly unique vibe to the 130bpm bass movement.
*On the flip, 'Someone' is a far more sombre affair, stuttered syncopated drums coupled with deep chords and a lush vocal complement a beautiful sub line, creating a tune rich in both emotion and narrative.
*ASC's interpretation brings his trademark experimental 'Auxiliary' flavour to the release. Perceivably an ode to the label's first excursion and drum and bass roots, the remix explores the ambient groove of 170BPM and does so seemingly effortlessly. It's a true display of disregard for genre norms and an interpretation that translates the original vibe into a subtler piece for autonomic aficionados.
*Early support from: Rowl, Versa, M.U.D, DjRum, Synkro, Troy Gunner, eleven8, HVL, Space Cadets, ASC, Sam KDC and more...

The UK scene has changed immeasurably since Hyperdub boss Kode9 released his Black Sun album two years ago. As dubstep, grime and funky mutated, so his own tastes gradually shifted, with his DJ sets increasingly drawing for the Stateside sounds of trap-inspired hip-hop and footwork.
*His new mix CD for Rinse, Rinse.22, documents the point at which his personal history in grime, house and jungle collides with those new sounds.
*The two tracks on this new 12" for Rinse - 'UH' (which features on Rinse:22) and 'OK' (EXCLUSIVE) - occupy that same zone between genres, finding him uncovering a thrilling point of contact between grime, broken UK house and the disorienting lurch of trap.*On 'UH' the connection to Kode9's history in UK club music especially is apparent - bounding along at house tempo, it repeatedly switches dramatically between the half-time lope of hip-hop, the deliciously swung shuffle of two-step and house's 4/4 pulse. 'OK' finds him exploring stranger, more rhythmically divergent territories: its strings of triplet-led hi-hat clicks and timestretched snares swirling wildly around each other, accompanied by a grimey synth melody. *It's simultaneously one of the strangest and most astonishingly funky club tracks in Kode9's back catalogue to date. Just as he's always done with his own music and the Hyperdub label in the past, both tracks revel in the possibilities for all man ner of bass-heavy music styles to intersect with and complement one another.

Lil Jabba - Scales

Lil Jabba

Scales

Local Action
04.07.2013

Lil Jabba isn't like the rest of them. While they're busy joining the dots between house and techno or whatever's safe right now, he's throwing paint all over the page. He's not American, but he's affiliated with Chicago's Teklife crew (DJ Spinn, DJ Rashad, etc.) and divides his time between Baltimore and Brooklyn, exhibiting his visual art, riding around with his bike gang and making some of the most hypnotic juke and footwork you'll ever hear. Local Action have been figuring out a release with him for over a year - eventually an EP wasn't enough, and they persuaded him to make it a full-length album, Scales.

Some of Scales has already seen the light of day through Youtube or limited cassette releases, some of it is unheard. Some tracks sound cleaner than others; that's because they're newer. That's how these things work. What is consistent throughout Scales is the quality: across 12 tracks, Jabba flips, twists and inverts the footwork template with endless layers of samples, gurgled vocal tags, jazz licks and whatever else he feels like. These aren't trax, they're tapestries.

"I promise you Lil Jabba has detail and grooves cornered" - The Needle Drop

"Blew our collective mind" - FACT

"His sinister juke stylings had me spazzing fairly quickly, elements of world music mixed with jittery beats chopped and reworked into something from the underworld of sound." - Electronic Beats

"I listened to this track so many times, it's hard to say if the music is making me anxious to hear more or turn it off." - Tiny Mixtapes
