Neko Neko drops the first part of his "Between Two Cities" series, entitled "Where", backed by remixes from everyone's favourite French beat-maker, Fulgeance.

Neko Neko's original mix on the A-side pairs lush harp samples with hefty kicks, claps and layered percussion loops. The track evolves nicely til the halfway point when it shifts direction, breaking down to a cosmic arpeggiated synth line that gets tweaked away while the other elements are expertly weaved in and out of the mix.

On the flip Fulgeance takes things down and dirty with a brutal remix aimed squarely at the clubs, chopping and filtering the main riff and layering it over his trademark rugged beats and subwoofer-shattering bass. This is followed by thugged out vocal samples and some innovative vocoder work.

To top things off, Fulgeance contributes another remix as a digital-only bonus track under his "Claude" alias, which comes free with the vinyl version via a download card. This time he steps up into housier territory with more subdued but still excellent synth melodies and uplifting piano chords.

Philipp Quehenberger's music has existed as a consistent strain amongst the Austrian underground for the last 15 years. His output is a cracking combination of dance floor zeal and deep disco disorientation. A perpetually rotating sphere which blends genres whilst bending the body and mind. Quehenberger's sweaty cerebrum is significantly showcased on his second full length for Editions Mego.

'Content' ventures deeper into Quehenberger's world of electro noir, ketamine cool and sordid soul. 'Fucked' is a monumental drive through a gloriously queasy and sleazy terrain which leads into the rolling rhythms of last years killer 'Uff Uff 12"". Here an oozing psychedelic tapestry folds amongst muffled voices resulting in a striking propulsive chant. 'Startled' further charts the depths of dance and disorientation as striding rhythms coalesce amongst gloriously diminishing synths. 'Extended' bounces around an ecstatic carnival atmosphere where an abject ringleader swerves amongst swirling organs and a thick organic beat. 'Content' is brimming with hard driving dance music. A bass line degenerate hurtling out of the speakers as the ultimate mood enhancer. Equal parts quarantine and club 'Content' is one Quehenberger's finest works to date

Jon Phonics (Jonathan Phoenix) has been steadily making a name for himself as a producer with releases on the likes of Giles Peterson's Brownswood Bubblers and a limited edition Cassette Tape through Bleep in 2013 (that sold out in under an hour). His signature brand of deep textured, soulful productions is hard to pin point; drawing as much from early 90's hip-hop as it does early 00's grime & 80s funk. Over the past 12 months his own label/club night, Astral Black, has been building a reputation as a platform for forward thinking producers in the burgeoning experimental hip hop and new wave grime scenes. The likes of Jaisu, Inkke and Opal Block have all contributed to the labels hand screen printed cassette series and there are some seriously heavy 12"s planned for the coming months. Packed out club residencies in both Glasgow & London are a testament to how this label has grown.


First Word is delighted to welcome Phonics to the fold for the release of his 'White Neckle' EP - 7 tracks that blend delicate melodies with tough beats and powerful top lines, with the addition of South-London rapper Rup and soul vocalist, Yasine lending their vocal talents to the mix. Having received early radio support from the likes of Alexander Nut, LuckyMe's The Blessings & Hyperdub's Scractha DVA - 'White Neckle' is another forward step for the talented producer. Available as a digi-EP and a limited edition 7" (featuring 4 of the tracks) it's the first of a run of projects for Phonics, with releases on Alexander Nut's 'Hotep' imprint and collaboration's with the likes of Pedestrian & Jam Baxter scheduled for release in the coming months.

Not quite in time to challenge for the Christmas number one slot, Shackleton releases a new 12' on his own Woe To The Septic Heart

Whilst these tracks can be contrasted with previous 12's by Shackleton on account of the use of various time-signatures and the
move away from sample manipulation in favour of synthesis, those who have heard Shackleton's releases before will nevertheless not
be surprised to hear tracks intended for the dance with an involved narrative, poly-rhythmic percussive elements and a psychedelic
edge.
Artwork comes once again from the talented hand of Zeke Clough.

Created in an industrial workplace in Leyton, where Canary Wharf punctures the skyline, Circle Traps craft music made in the image of the modern city. The group consists of Jack Wyllie, Duncan Bellamy and Will Ward and was formed in East London in 2010 and quickly scored their first release on fellow East Londoner Subeena's Opit Records in early 2011. Their eponymous debut EP earned serious critical praise from the likes of The Wire, Quietus and Fact Magazine. Their attention to ambient textures is reminiscent of Actress and Daniel Lopatin, but their unique, multi-layered, crystalline vision is consistently offset by dance floor impulses that nod to Detroit through the likes of Model 500 and Derrick May. The Machine City EP is a lush amalgamation of textural, distorted melody and bassier dance floor leanings.

The next missive from the French-Swiss collective Danse Noire run by Aisha Devi comes from the shadowy Algerian producer El Mahdy Jr. Recently talking to Wire Magazine El Mahdy Jr. says "Music ain't just music. For me the hidden story and the cultural background of a tune is always more attractive than the musical composition." Following up on his Boomarm Nation releases, El Mahdy Jr.'s forthcoming 'Gasba Grime' EP ventures towards new territory weaving haunting Arabesque samples into his skittering club constructions. The crippled tribal beats of "Zarga" and "Crack Addicted Belly Dancer" refine the ideas presented on last year's excellent 'The Spirit of Fucked Up Places', but the title track "Gasba Grime" which combines eastern sensibilities with a relentless grime swing into something more geared towards the dancefloor. The release's hypnotic centerpiece "Lost Bridge" emanates an introspective, meditative quality merging lurching rhythms with mournful strings and vocal samples. The EP is rounded out by a stellar remix of "Lost Bridge" from Blackest Ever Black's Killing Sound (Vessel, El Kid, Jabu). The third release on the rising Danse Noire label (Aisha Devi, Vaghe Stelle), El Mahdy Jr's contribution perfectly captures the label's outsider spirit, seeking higher levels of ancestral consciousness by using music as their ritual medium of communication.

Italian producer My Dry Wet Mess, aka Giovanni Civitenga, is a name that has resonated in the world of left field/beats since it's exciting fledgling years. Though his father is the bass player for Ennio Morricone's orchestra and a studio guitarist on numerous Italian records, from a young age Gio was drawn towards hip hop. At the age of 14, his father gave him a sampler and an Atari, and his beatmaking experiments grew boundless. Having released albums on Daedleus' Magical Properties imprint and Flying Lotus' Brainfeeder venture, it is a pleasure for Fine Grains to present the 'Laptop Lapdance EP' - his first vinyl release.

My Dry Wet Mess' unique sound is recognisable for it's multi-layered intricacy and offbeat charm. Skittering beats slide through surreal melodies and distorted vocals or keys. An uplifting and awkward dance-inducing experience often ensues. In 'Laptop Lapdance', Civitenga encapsulates these elements with four engrossing story-telling tracks. Remixes come from Hyperdub' Ikonika, Dam Mantle and Auntie Flo. The latter starting with a dreamy analogue rework of 'Nailed Scale', a gentle breezy groove with a plethora of subtle details peaking out from the undergrowth. If Auntie Flo's remix is a curious walk along the jungle path, Dam's Mantle's 'Nailed Scale' remix is head first into the depths. Dark and prowling, Mantle strips down the emotive elements to tribal claps and creepy background echoes. Stepping further into techno territory, Ikonika's 'Scenario Adjustment remix' highlights the metallic and futuristic elements of 'Eyelids' Secret'. A stomping mechanical rhythm goes for the jugular from start to finish. In her 'Shy' remix of the track, Ikonika wraps up with a beat-less cinematic twist. An epic and ethereal finish that could easily befit a futuristic sci-fi film score.

Oil Gang are proud to present the debut EP from Lewisham's bright young grime star, Novelist. Fresh from his vocal appearance on 'Take Time', the lead track on Mumdance's EP with Rinse FM and radio sets with scene luminaries Slimzee, Spooky, Slackk & Logan Sama, this four track EP displays the 17 year old's versatility with a showcase of his productions.

The lead track, 'Sniper', a barrage of gunshots, bleeps and sub bass, harks back to the sparse minimalism of early Dizzee productions and has become a staple of pirate radio and club sets throughout the scene over the last few months. The rest of the EP follows suit in the same manner, whether it be 'Christmas Riddim' and and it's bizarre angular sleighbells or 'Messy', used in the legendary Lewisham cyphers from last year.

All records take a while to come together and we're really pleased to have seen Novelist in the ascendancy in the last few months since we signed this EP, whether it's smashing up raves he's too young to even legally enter as an MC, or as a producer, seeing Sniper gradually become a bit of anthem in our own sets at Boxed and on radio. A prodigious talent.

Ambient musician Pete Burton is a multi-instrumentalist with a clear ethos about his music. For him, a feeling of immediate spontaneity is born from the degree of improvisation involved. You can clearly hear this on his debut album 'objects of mind'. Hailing from Glasgow Pete has delivered a magnificent and beautiful multi layered album that can be perfectly described as a soundtrack-esque drama in 10 acts. His influences from bands such as Popol Vuh are clearly present and Pete played all the instruments on this album such as synths, guitar, bass, kalimba and various percussion instruments in long improvised live takes and sculpted his gorgeous music to an incredible album. going to be out Well, here it is now , the two 'zombies' Cosmic Neman and Etienne Jaumet finally sign their first film music
for the first feature film from director , Narimane Mari, " Loubia Hamra " ("Bloody Beans"), to be released in spring 2014. And
we found them there, where we do not expect, because it's not a horror movie, but a free movie, a journey of a group of
children from a district of Algiers during the war of Algeria, who becomes aware of life and death.Director Narimane Mari talks

The hyper-chromatic music of Matt Cutler marks him out as a true
impressionist; as Lone, he drizzles brightly coloured melody through
his tracks with all the reflexive skill of a master painter daubing inks
and pigment across paper. On Cutler's fifth Lone album, Reality
Testing, released on R&S, he sends notes and chords rippling
delicately into space before allowing them to disperse, each oozing
beautifully away into the background fabric of the music. Combined
with rhythms that ebb and flow, shifting from propulsive club
constructions to beatific coastal hip-hop, it's a sensuous, immersive,
heady experience, and easily his most accomplished and selfcontained

Astro:Dynamics finally drops Frida-Li Lovgren aka Quiltland's self-titled LP, following on from the Sisto EP a couple of weeks ago. Combines a pop-orientated experimental approach where a new-age fragility sits alongside a tape-sautrated euro trance palette, at times recalling the works of Lars 'TCF' Holdhus or Lorenzo Senni but with a more saccarine-sweet and vocal-fuelled edge. The 10-track LP also features a remix from fellow swede and labelmate 1991.

Formed in opposition to the media identity schizophrenia of the present, Thought Broadcast thrive upon the post-punk tactics of forgery and radical anonymity. "Votive Zero" is the second release on Editions Mego from this mysteriously coded American outfit. Emerging from the US noise/punk background Thought Broadcast further trace a unique path with nine carefully considered obfuscations of rhythm and blurred takes on expressionism. Utilising minimalist spaces, rhythmic repetition and material textures "Votive Zero" navigates psycho-geometries whilst bathing in a lost, dubplate style fidelity. Within this construction, past and present are unified as a hazily paranoid exploration of electronic music's nebulous grey zone. From the damaged mystery of "07/13/2013" to the smeared beats of "Carving a Vow" and morse code mantra of "Runaway Signal" this ambiguous release treads a subtle and suspicious path where secrets once hidden are revealed on further, deeper listens. "Votive Zero" is a sustained journey through raw, hand rendered minimal electronics which advance the cause and effect of Thought Broadcast's strategic occurrences.

The Longing Daylight, the sophomore effort from Lee Anthony Norris and Porya Hatami, is a natural followup to Every Day is a New Drug. Once again working with their familiar recipe of field recordings, electronics, and improvised live piano, Lee and Porya dig deeper into their trademark windswept, decaying, yet delicate sound to produce an ambient masterpiece that is sure to delight their fans. Clocking in at just over 39 minutes, the 5 tracks of The Longing Daylight are just long enough to keep the listener aurally satisfied, while at the same time wanting more.

Following his debut EP "Heartbox", Blockboy's new release "Monument Of The Broken Souls" is a highly complex and entertaining record.

Again, it would be very hard to label his sound, but still the mix of HipHop-Beats, catchy melodies, all sorts of sampling and Blues influences is astonishingly homogenous.

The inspiration to many of these sound jewels are faded voices of the past - old Blues records from Blockboy's Vinyl treasury. Accordingly, this record is dedicated to them: to the "broken souls"!

The vinyl LP is strictly limited to 300 copies. Certainly a future collector's item not only due to the limited press run but the high quality production and sound.

ARTIST INFO

As an avowing vinyl-junkie, the native of Munich sees his inspirational roots mainly in Beat and Rockmusic of the early 70s as well as in the New York HipHop of the 90s.

In his recording studio and atelier in an old building flat in Munich, he regularly descends into spheres of visual art and sound. With attention to detail, the communication designer plays and records all instruments himself, strictly according to the motto: keep it real!

To put a label on Blockboy's sound is not easy, since he shifts between many genres - one characteristic though is his affection for detailed samples of Vinyl treasures, which he skillfully transforms and refines.

Along with the band 'Octopussies', a HipHop-Funk combo, that he was founding member, guitarist and musical lead of, Blockboy already has a lot of live experience - with hand-made music and real instruments.

After releasing first tracks on the Sampler "Yummy! Yummy!", followed by the release of his debut EP "Heartbox", he finally made the full transition to electronic musician on his first LP, titled "Monument Of The Broken Souls".

Sean Pineiro combines different musical elements to one stringent sound story, filled with anecdotes.Fester Bestandteil einer jeden Labelarbeit: Bei zig eigesendeten Promos Preziosen von Prüll trennen. Dass der digitale Abfalleimer kaum der adäquate Aufbewahrungsort für die Produktionen eines jungen Herren namens Sean Piñeiro ist, war Ki Records schon nach schnellem Durchskippen klar; welches Glück unser Label hatte, die Tracks überhaupt in die Finger zu bekommen, aber nicht: Denn eigentlich hatte Piñeiro nach einem abgebrochenen Studium der Anthropologie in Utrecht Jazz-Pianist werden wollen; es verschlug ihn nach New York, wo er statt dem Klavierschemel jedoch die Bank drückte - und zwar im wahrsten Sinne des Wortes - bis er sich schließlich entschloss, sein Glück beim New Yorker City College zu versuchen und dort Music Composition zu studieren. Zwei verworfene Karrieren brauchte es also, um Piñeiros 14-Track-starkes Debütalbum auf Vinyl und CD zu bringen. Ob sich auch der Titel der Platte - Saved once Twice' darauf bezieht
