The Life You Chose' was the darkside highlight of DJ Madd's album from early 2012, with heavy support on dubplate making it one of his most in-demand tunes. Of the notable DJs giving it regular airtime, Distance liked the track so much he offered to give it the remix treatment.

DVA started off Hyperdub's barrage of albums in 2012 with his brilliant 'Pretty Ugly', and now closes the the year with the 'Fly Juice' EP's bumper selection of machine tooled tracks, each created for optimum dancefloor damage and road tested by DVA, Kode9 and a select bunch of DJs. These four tracks are a brilliant example of what he's been describing as 'power house' for a while, a colourful chunky techno sound that switches up every 8 bars like grime and has plenty of shuffle and offbeat swing as a counterpoint to the 4/4 drums. 'Fly Juice' opens with sweet jazz funk Rhodes before dropping into weightless bouncey chopped vocals and stuttering drums building through 8 bar patterns - with the Rhodes as a sweetner, it's bliss! 'Do It' runs a stuttering voice, a huge deep bassline and relentless building stabs against shuffling drums. On 'Walk it Out', the repetition of the title over a pummelling two note melody is positively dumb, but pitched against swirling effects and whooshing chords the effect is epic. 'Long Street' features a collaboration with South African producer Big Space, and echoes the sound of early UK bleep and bass with a stern melody, breaking down into swirling Detroit-like chords, while shuffling along on a crisp, scissoring rhythm. After the sweet and sour songfulness of his album 'Pretty Ugly', the 'Fly Juice' EP shows DVA returning to his dancefloor roots. As an amazing DJ/producer, you can expect more of this in 2013.

2012 sees Hemlock's 20th release after four years at the frontline of forwardlooking bass music and dark electronica. To mark the occasion Hemlock boss Untold has curated a 65-minute mix joining the dots between the label's past, present and future. 'Chapter One' weaves his favourite moments from the back catalogue with a series of exclusive material from FaltyDL, Randomer, Joe, Sei A, Guy Andrews and Untold himself. The beautifully packaged CD will be released alongside three 12" vinyls containing exclusive music.
From modest beginnings in the heady days of dubstep's conception, Hemlock - founded by producer Jack Dunning (AKA Untold) and designer Andy Spencer in 2008 - quickly became a force to be reckoned with in the sprawling, and oftenc onfused, world of UK bass
music. Since then, the label has steadily forged its own curious path, building an enviable back catalogue and garnering a reputation along the way for zeitgeist defining releases.
'Chaper One', as you'd expect from Untold by now, is anything but your average mix. It takes as many twists and turns as Hemlock's back catalogue and reflects the story of not just the label's evolution, but also the evolution of the music scene it spawned from. Starting briskly, it jumps through percussive workouts from Fantastic Mr. Fox and Mount Kimbie, soon blunted with the bassweight of
the half-step anthems 'Air & Lack Thereof' and 'Discipline'. The section climaxes into the psychedelic organ studies from James Blake's 'Stop What You're Doing' remix before gradually fading into an icy noise speckled mid-section. Cosmin TRG's brutally sparse 'Béton Brut' crumbles into the muzzled chimes of 'Under' - one of Untold's most ambiguous cuts to date. The panic reigns through
FaltyDL's 'Artemis', picking up momentum into the metallic jacking 4/4 kicks of Sei A's 'Hyphen'. Guy Andrews cements the groove with the epic 'Resistivity', morphing into a broken tribal drum workout towards the end. Randomer then picks up the funk with 'This Train', before getting nasty with 'We Laugh, We Scream'.
The final section explores the label's fascination with reconfiguring the hallmarks of jungle and drum 'n' bass, with the rowdy MC chatter on 'Fatalist' sparring with the rugged bleeps and bass of 'Studio Power On', and the sinister Reece synths of 'Motion the Dance'. After the last onslaught the mix fades out to the calming neon glow of Nautiluss & Lord Skywave's 'Ultraviolet'. With 'Chapter One' documenting their past and earmarking possibilities for future exploration, Hemlock looks set to fearlessly guide
brave listeners into the next chapter of uncharted frequencies.

A strange alchemy of rugged RZAesque drums lay a contrasting bed for his spectral outboard sound bombardment. In contradiction with prior experiments, ZENITH has a strong and muscular loop based drum aesthetic running throughout from the NYC leanings mun Rhul to the straight up Amen bothering Hardcore of ZENITH itself Loops Haunt has never sounded more relevant on a soundsystem!

Ben Verse returns to his much-loved Crunch Recordings imprint with two tracks that set the levels for his forthcoming Maze Music
LP. Both have become integral tools in the DJ sets of Youngsta, J Kenzo, Truth, Seven, and many more in recent months.
Amongst a grueling worldwide gig schedule Ben Verse dedicates his little spare time to music production, in airports, planes, trains,
studios, cars, anywhere he can get a minute. Having amassed a healthy collection of tracks over the last year working towards his
debut solo album, he put together this 12' containing two tracks that give a taster of what's to come. 'Different Way' and 'Tiger Foot'
both represent his rolling organic ethos of weighty sub bass, earthy atmospheres, ethnic musical elements and subtle but crystal
clear mid range bass melodies.

Brassica presents Temple Fortune; a beautiful, bittersweet EP of synth-steeped electronic music and the producer's debut for Civil Music. The record was created during a year of musical experimentation and inspired by club experiences, both good and bad, childhood memories and existential anxiety.Incorporating analog synths, vintage drum machines, rave nostalgia, 80s electronic pop, cosmic slow jams, avant-garde electronics and a melancholic crush of Italo, Electro and disco bearing vocals, Brassica's music remembers much - memories that are worth the price of admission alone - but drawing in part on the urban solitude each evokes and coupling with feelings humid and raw, the music of Michael Anthony Wright is able to express so much more, a quiet storm of musical restraint and emotive power. Aligning music with that of greats such as Throbbing Gristle, New Order, Joy Division, Cabaret Voltaire is a daunting prospect; but gazing out of the sensual and emotional 'Temple Fortune' is an artist showing the vision and individuality to place himself among such exquisite talent.Resonating with ghostly funk, intimate and sagely Temple Fortune is intelligent and immersive. Haunting lead track Modern Magic is equal parts theatrical, romantic and wrenching. Led by a bass line (from a fretless bass guitar) which sees the spectral image of Joy Division's Peter Hook alive and well, it features live drums, restless vocals and long, slow, constellation mapping synth lines. The playful/woeful space jam of Lose Him follows, and includes the vocal of long time friend 'Stuart Warwick'. A nervous death dance interspersed with (ware)house bass lines and sinister synths intensify over a furtive playground chant. Milieux Metrix includes the hushed voice of Ghostape. Bass heavy disco stomps and key lead synths swirl alongside strange sounds while low vibrato cello calls give tension/release to the disorientating ancient meets the modern age theme. The EP closes with the soulful, ghostly rave of Lydden Circuit. The rushing anxeity and dancefloor disquiet have somewhat made an underground hero of Brassica for a quiet generation of lost ravers. (To which the comments on the self made & mesmerizing video appearing almost a year ago on youtube attest.) Add a floor ready acid disco remix from Capracara, & Om Unit's consistently unique take on the footwork sound adding a new dimension to his rework, this is quite a package. Brassica views his music as a highly personal, pure distillation of his own experiences. As a child his desire to 'go beyond listening' and 'somehow get around the back' initially manifested itself at a very early age - modifying the family tape deck, removing the erase function to endlessly overdub and create cassette tape collages. Entering his teens rave happened. religiously attending local under-18's raves he indulged in Ratpack, Slipmatt, DJ Hype & more. Subsequent spells in various prog, hardcore and metal bands developed into adventures in experimental music and performances with the London Sinfonietta + airings of his compositions on BBC Radio 3. However a realisation that 'chin-stroking, experimental music buffs actually cared less about the music than the¬ party people, who were physically showing their appreciation for the sounds they heard' lead him to his ongoing love affair with italo, nu-disco, house and synth-based sounds. His first output was immediately snapped up by innovative underground labels, including Andy Blake's Dissident, Tartaruga and Cyber Dance, simultaneously inducing feverish excitement from tastemakers 20 Jazz Funk Greats, Vice, BICEP and more, and paving the way for the Temple Fortune EP, his most accomplished offering yet. The Temple Fortune EP will be available from 19th November on 12 & Download from Civil Music. A nostalgic trip through the past of synth-led music this is not. Cerebral and pioneering it exhibits an ahead-of-his-time mind in full flow, it is a monument to passion, energy, and cathartic despair.

'We both are obsessed with company logos,' explain Diamond Version. 'We collected these slogans and started reading them, without knowing the companies. In this amount and concentration they become absurd.'A version of Shift The Future was transmitted at the No Nukes 2012 festival in Japan, organised by Ryuichi Sakamoto as a reaction to the reopening of the Oi nuclear power plant following 2011's nuclear disaster.EP2 is the second in the series being released by Mute and follows EP1: Technology At The Speed Of Life / Empowering Change, described by The Wire as 'metallic ring modulated tones gleam in the dark always driven forward by a malevolent computational funk'.Diamond Version is the collaborative project between two of the most groundbreaking, experimental and forward thinking creators in modern music, Byetone and Alva Noto. After an outstanding pack of 12-inches for Scuba's Hotflush Recordings, London DJ and producer Sigha a.k.a James Shaw confidently returns to the label with his heavily anticipated debut LP, 'Living WIth Ghosts'. For this offering he presents twelve impressive techno and ambient productions and fuses his love of classic UK techno with the contemporary sound that currently pulses through Berlin's Berghain. Since his 2009 debut on the label, Sigha has organically shifted further and further into the straight 4/4 realm of techno, embracing the subterranean, darker soundscapes of his new production homebase, Berlin. However, hiding under all that bass, one can still hear the whisper of many long forgotten shoegaze numbers - My Bloody Valentine, Sonic Youth and Slowdive, some of Sigha's heaviest influences, vibrate throughout. Years of playing guitar in London bands defined Sigha's musical start and gave him an ear for the emotive. He was able to merge both worlds after quite literally stumbling across techno by chance, igniting his love of electronic music. Ever since, he's expertly navigated the halls of UK Garage and dub, releasing on Hotflush, Blueprint and his own fledgling imprint, Our Circular Sound, finely tuning his style, eventually landing squarely in a place where he feels most at home: techno. Kicking off the journey is the falsely pacifying and ethereal track 'Mirror', a brief lull before the onslaught of melodic sonic doom that is 'Living WIth Ghosts'. From the oscillating come-up dubbiness of 'Ascension' to the banging heavenliness that is 'Puritan', to the dripping wet, acid-licked 'Scene Couple', Sigha only comes up for ambient air on 'Suspension' before plunging back down for more. 'Dressing for Pleasure (Ideal)' and 'Dressing for Pleasure (Extract)' are both awash with the cold hallmark sounds of Regis, while the bleak, minimal surfaces of 'Delicate' and 'She Kills In Ecstasy' perfectly soundtrack the inescapable morning-after come-down, before 'Aokigahara' rounds off the album in an elegant soundscape. An additional track, 'Brood' will be released as limited vinyl-only 10, and will never see the digital light of day. Sigha has provided remixes for well-respected labels like CLR, Mikrowave, Metalheadz, Echocord, Steadfast and Sudden Drop, and maintains a very busy touring and production schedule.

Following a successful stint in North Asia Alpha Steppa of Steppas Records is back in the motherland (UK). Extensive touring and experimentation with traditional instruments has served to both fine-tune his production skills and inspire a burst of creativity. Never one to rest on his laurels, Alpha Steppa has quickly teamed up with Moonshine Recordings to continue his ever increasing contribution to the dub world. Alpha Steppa has also reconnected with his mentors on this record, forming the aptly named Dub Dynasty with UK dub heavy-weights Alpha and Omega. There can be no doubt that these three artists understand each others musical capabilities perfectly. This debut collaboration presents a taste of what music connoisseurs can expect later in the year when the heavily anticipated Dub Dynasty full album drops. A friendship was struck up, and tune swapping has resulted in these two beauties being dropped on wax..A versatile producer who sums up the current bass scene's openminded attitude to genres and influences, Chex is at home making deep electro, heads down techno, smokey jazzed out house, or post whatever bass music..

Moonshine Recordings is happy to present two new heavy tunes from the mighty RSD. RSD, perhaps better known as Bristol bass and drum music stalwart Rob Smith (one half of respected production duo Smith and Mighty), has been pushing bass heavy rhythms for more than two decades. Under the moniker RSD, he produces fresh, innovative bass music that simultaneously pays dues to his deep soundsystem roots while pushing things ever forward. Main track on this 12 is grimey 'Dancehall Rock' that features vocals from Ricky Ranking, well known from his collaborations with The Bug. The title track 'Brixton Bass' kicks things off with a drop like a tonne of bricks straight to the face, accompanied with a grinding synth
attack on your senses and a heaving, club-destroying bassline to give you a taste of things to come. 'Empty Spaces' is a low-slung
and snarling roller, bristling with pent up energy and deliberate, probing kick drums that punch through your speakers like a
young Mike Tyson.

Last up is 'Theory of one' that has been getting a lot of attention on the Deep Heads Soundcloud.

SKRILLEX is on the path for complete world domination. The EP 'BANGARANG', which is now available for the first time on 12' vinyl, went straight to #10 in the UK iTunes chart when it was first released, and very quickly peaked at #2 with it taking the #1 spot in the dance charts. In the US it peaked at #2 and went to #1 in Australia, New Zealand and Canada's iTunes charts. The first single 'Breakn' A Sweat (Skrillex & The Doors)' was Zane Lowe's Record of The Week at Radio 1 and went straight onto the A-list.

Skrillex's You Tube channel has racked up over 750 million views, with the official video for the title track 'Scary Monsters & Nice Sprites' having near 110 million views alone. World domination seems an easy feat for this 23 year old.

Terror Danjah's second Hyperdub album is 'The Dark Crawler', a well-paced and much more upfront and energetic journey through his musical world than his debut 'Undeniable'. The album revolves around the 'Dark Crawler' theme, a blistering grime track that pops up several times, vocaled by MC's Riko Dan, Mayhem, Deadly and Saf One, and then lastly Trim and Kossie. That's not to say the album is one dimensional or relentless. It's subtley balanced with the 'Dark Crawler' thread of tracks allowing the album to spin off in a web of directions without losing any focus. It's a much more contained body of work, paced to keep the listeners interest. From the 'Dark Crawler' intro into the cartoonish horror soundtrack of 'Mirror's Edge', which tricks you into thinking its just any dubstep tune, before scattering into Terror's signature broken kicks and claps. 'Dark Gremlinz' featuring D.O.K. is a classic peak-era asymmetric grime instrumental. The album then drops down into the 130ish speed of 'Air Max 90' featuring Champion, which builds from a soca-like drum drill stretching the rhythm to the point of collapse with a wonky synth, before concluding on a driving baseline house 4/4. The first 'Dark Crawler' vocal is next, with a ferocious performance from veteran Roll Deep MC Riko Dan, who drops bloodthirsty threats at a breakneck pace. Next, the tempo drops down again to the drunk funk of 'Full Hundred', with criss cross claps and a rasping bassline breaking down into live drumming and tight trap door edits. Things speed up a little again with the intricate 8 bar funky of 'Rum Punch', a hard drum tattoo rolling out over a heavy detuned bassline and intense bleeps. On the second 'Dark Crawler', mic duties are shared by Birmingham MC's Mayhem , Deadly and Saf One. Their hard vocals contrast with lush styled R'n'B of 'You Make Me Feel' featuring Meleka. The album then rolls out into the galloping drums and smooth G-Funk synths of 'Baby Oil'. Trim and Kossie drop the final 'Dark Crawler' vocal, with Trim dropping deadpan threats contesting with Kossie's focussed hysteria. Next up 'Delicately', with Ruby Lee Rider, starts in slow motion R'n'B mood, sweet Rhodes chords drift and bubble up as the track doubles up into dreamy drum and bass with a fluttering tabla keeping the time, and Ruby's tender vocals tempering the pace and aggression. Overall, it's a brilliant exercise in breathless rhythmic arousal. 'Moschino', on the other hand is a darker, chunkier and grimier mirror image to 'Delicately', switching up into a ferocious metallic riffage, before the album closes on an outro of 'Dark Crawler' again. Form, function, energy and talent fuse perfectly over 'The Dark Crawler' s length. Enjoy the ride.

November 2012 see the launch of South Coast beat mechanic Mark Dobson's Lost Tribe label. Fast building himself an international following for his Ambassadeurs project - Mark decided the time was right to launch his own label focusing on forward thinking bass-oriented electronic music.

Church is a much respected London party that invites the likes of Juan Atkins, Darling Farah, Marcellus Pittman and other such underground heavyweights to their events, and have done for 18 months. Now well established, founders Seb Wildblood & Apes are taking the next step and launching a label of the same name after dipping their toe in the release arena with a Lorca white label, 'Faith Evans Refix' which was out in late September.
