Caspa Ft. Mighty High Coup - On It

Dub Police
14.12.2012

Having teamed up with Keith Flint of Prodigy fame
on the hard-hittng 'War' earlier this year, Dub
Police boss Caspa is making a return to the label for
his new single 'On It' featuring Atlanta-based hip
hop collective Mighty High Coup. Never content to
rest on his creative laurels, the track marks another
evolution in the underground figurehead's sound as
he continues to push the envelope. Fusing the UK
sound with which he has become synonymous and
a healthy dose of hip hop swagger that he has
absorbed during his time spent across the Atlantic,
'On It' packs some serious heat. DP076 (the 'On It'
remix vinyl) is an impressive and eclectic package,
with standout contributions coming from all areas of
bass music. We get reworkings from the legendary
TC, Digital Soundboy star Dismantle and Dub
Police newcomer Dirty Dog. Having recently
released his debut EP on the label, Dirty Dog
delivers more dance floor carnage infusing the
original with a dub skank and big bass tones, while
TC takes the track's hip hop foundations and
rebuilds them into an evolving tearout drum and
bass version. Rapidly rising....

CDTEMPACD020
Tempa Recordings
18.02.2013

"It is dubstep," says J:Kenzo of the deep, dark and sub-heavy music that makes up his eponymous debut album for Tempa. "Some people like to call it different names - dungeon, stuff like that," he smiles. "But to me it is dubstep, like it was when it first came out. Stripped down beats and bass, quite simply."

Opener 'Statement of Intent', swells from silence to a thick, rocky groove that rattles speaker cones like an earthquake. It's punishing, but carried along by an implicit sense of funk, each element placed for maximum impact. Throughout the album's length, these traits are repeated - flickers of electro riffage punctuating 'Invaderz' and 'Contagion', Rod Azlan's toasting to herald a monstrous drop in 'Ruffhouse'. What's striking about J:Kenzo's tracks is how few elements they contain, but how powerfully each is utilised: he reduces dubstep to its very essence, leaving only the barest essentials required to shake a dancefloor to the foundations.

Having grown up on soul, reggae and rare groove before delving deep into jungle, drum & bass and later garage, when he first came across the sound developing at FWD>> and DMZ, something immediately clicked. As he honed his production skills, those wide-ranging musical influences began to express themselves, lending his tracks the open-minded feel that has become his calling card. It was something Rinse FM's Youngsta noticed immediately when Kenzo first sent him the track that would become his 2011 Tempa debut single, 'The Roteks'. "Youngsta took it under his wing and just blew it up, exposed it to a whole group of people who had never heard me or my sound before' .

The album contines to show off that diversity. Although still unmistakably dubstep, it channels a range of other sounds - dub's woozy skank; twisting conga lines; blistering electro synths; Reconstruct's techno momentum; while Grime makes an appear- ance too, with Newham Generals' MC Footsie on 'No Man's Land'.

'Eyes Wide Open', meanwhile, boldly shows off dubstep's ability to be a uniquely flexible form of pop music. While the majority of the dubstep that hits the charts is shorn of all subtlety, here its half-sung, half-whispered lyrics and gorgeous descending arpeggio turn oceanic halfstep into a deep, meditative vocal track, equally at home in headphones, on late-night radio or cutting through the crowd at FWD>>.

And therein lies the root of J:Kenzo's appeal - remaining tied to dubstep's core values while pushing it along new pathways.

Exodus

12inchIMRV002
Innamind Recordings
03.12.2012

'After the resounding success of the Innamind Recordings debut vinyl release back in July, they come correct once again as Catacombs steps into the fray with two high tensile halfstep missiles, featuring a collaboration with Manchester's Knowledge on 'Exodus', and 'Organism' on the flip. Their tough and uncompromising beats have been regularly cropping up in the sets of every major heavy-hitter from Biome to the Anti-Social crew to N-Type, and mid-November will finally see two of their most serious productions to date released on IMRV002 across both vinyl and digital formats. Catacombs and Knowledge combine production skillsets on 'Exodus' and bring pure, unadulterated dreadnought-styled bass pressure. Deftly crafted drum patterns set the scene, and lead into haunting wails of distant Eastern melody and a chilling vocal sample before the drop hits like a sonic depth charge, driven by imperious sub-frequency engineering and twisted snarls of probing mid-range. 'Organism' features Catacombs on a solo tip, with the Midlands based beatsmith building pensive, moody aesthetics that bristle with malevolence. Dense walls of low-end swell restlessly beneath darting sweeps of mechanised synths, super crisp snare cracks and patters of neatly applied bongos; lethal moves to round off another killer Innamind 10'. Danny has been a key NY DJ an astounding 41 years and continuing to be stronger than ever, playing unforgettable sold out events around the world including the award winning 'Best Party in NYC' 718 Sessions and also as one of the three members of Body & Soul (along with Francois K and Joe Clausell). His vinyl record collection numbers over 80,000 and his long term wide-ranging knowledge of music and nightlife have afforded him the opportunity to contribute to a number of historical films and features about this exciting segment of pop culture. With EDM culture now exploding around the world, there is an ever higher demand for the true pioneers and Danny Krivit is most certainly a rarity in that he was there in the beginning and continues to evolve as a DJ and producer.
This compilation highlights Danny's expertise and skill as a a DJ and also spotlights the 718 Sessions party. Monolithium - Bounce 4 Life

Error Broadcast released Monolithiums' debut 12" 'Simon & G-Funk' in Summer 2011 to much critical acclaim. Back then, his mixture of footwork drummings, complex track arrangement and flawless pop was an important step for us to advance from the beat music continuum and found its logical extrapolation in releases with B-Ju, H-SIK, and OL most recently. After touring the US Westcoast and a busy summer, we are delighted to welcome the Vancouver-based producer and DJ back with his 12" EP 'Bounce 4 Life'.
'Bounce 4 Life' finds Monolithium offering the perfect mixture of club-ready footwork snare rolls and low-swung hip hop bass, a glossy get-together of pitched vocals and super-melodic synth chords. Lead single 'Bounce 4 Life' is an undestroyable hymn that we've been rinsing all summer long (and from the DJ support it's safe to say we're not the only ones). The back-stabbing 'Lancashire Hammer' slows down the dance to rap tempi, while 'Pavillionaire' (featuring Prison Garde) joins boogie with high-pitched vocal samples and sickly-sweet synthesizer arpeggios. On 'Spiral Face' and 'Sleepy Beauty', Monolithium takes a slightly more ambient and elegiac approach to footwork, with the former paying clever tribute to the Amen break and the later focussing on melodic sophistication a bit more.

Final Chapter Lp Sampler 1

12inchDSC14LP10S
03.12.2012

DSCI4's latest LP offering 'Final Chapter', is, sadly, the final chapter in the label's history. Founded back at the turn of the century by the legendary DJ Trace it became one of the standard bearers for the 'Techstep' sound in drum and bass with an enviable discography, including the revered 'Spy Technologies' series of compilations, as well as helping to bring through now household
names such as Black Sun Empire and Chris SU along the way. Yet 13 years down the line Trace has decided to call it a day and what better to way to go out than with a bang...
A special mention must go to 'Prominence' by Stranjah however which is without doubt one of the most ridiculous tunes to grace my
ears in a very long time. Drawing you in with some dreamy bukem-esque pads, 32 bars later you're getting battered into submission
with some wailing synths, mental amen edits and pounding bass. Absolute carnage.

Spongemagnet - Release The Gimp

Spongemagnet's debut EP raises a few questions. To begin with, its title: is it a commendable recommendation to let your inner gimp come out of the closet Or is it the expression of a more Judaeo-Christian approach to the matter: 'hate the gimping, but love the gimp' The titles of the tracks are also subject to debate. 'Bum Damage' sounds like something one might wake up to after a night of heavy drinking and insufficient amyl nitrite consumption. 'Poon Quiver' refers to the shaking motion sometimes exhibited by female genitalia when reaching climax during some form of sexual activity. I'm not quite sure who the narrator of 'Gimp Bisquit' is: the 'gimper' or the 'gimpee' And is the 'bisquit' of the gimp or for the gimp As for 'Plutonium Catwrap', I would prefer abstaining from any attempt at explaining what it might mean in this chemically-preserved, plastic-wrapped world (but it sounds undeniably dirty). Now I don't know about you, but I see a definite trend appearing. Bromance gone wrong.
About The Artist :
People are sheep. That's why they're always looking for a shepherd. That's why they walk in line, rank and file, hook, line and sinker. They're not looking for choice; they're looking for comfort.
Some like to get their egons fisked. Personally I find it to be an uncomfortable - and messy - affair. But then again, I always thought 'A Love Supreme' was a type of casserole.
When the aforementioned shepherd decides to team up with your local egon fisker, things can get a little hairy. Ricky Sunset and Bobby Magnet do their best to prove just that. Someone told me that they tend to attract leeches. I disagree. 'Dogs don't breed cats' my granny always said. They claim they're going to live forever - or die tryin'. I don't believe them.

Blacksmif / Juno Sutton / Jabru / Mtd & Dutty Dan - One Man & His Lighthouse / Butterfly Stitched / Stranded

Hot on the heels of our first release, Paradise Club Recordings are straight back to business with another limited run, coloured vinyl EP that should further establish the labels growing reputation for diverse, forward thinking musicianship and staunch production values.Opening proceedings on the A-side is the stunning 'One Man & His Lighthouse' by Blacksmif. Dense synth textures are layered upon
a foundation of dynamic, pulsing cross rhythms to create an enchanting garage-meets-soul flavour that has come to define his distinct style. Continuing on the A side, Juno Sutton steps up on remix duties, creating a highly functional rework by ducking the tempo and stripping down the groove, realigning the track toward the dance-floor, while still perfectly complimenting Blacksmif's more offbeat original.
On the AA-side, Jabru shows another string to his bow and drops the pace further with the slowburning 'Butterfly Stitched' (vinyl exclusive). Here, deep pounding 808s and driving claps are woven into lo-fi pads and a haunting vocal sample to form an ethereal,
melodic stomper that still has the club set firmly in its sights.
MTD & Dutty Dan round off the AA side with the incendiary 'Stranded'. Primed for peak time destruction, the track combines gut- punching sub tones with powerful stabs and rugged, elemental percussion, resulting in a bass-heavy sonic weapon that ensures a full
attendance on the floor time and time again.
We hope you'll agree that this set of carefully crafted pieces by some unusual suspects that you're sure to be hearing a lot more from
very soon, goes one step closer to help cement Paradise Club Recordings' position as a real force to be reckoned with into 2013 and
beyond.

Jack Dice is a new project from John Twells and Walkmaster Flex, now releasing their debut EP for Modern Love.
John Twells, amongst very many other things, runs the Type label and has been producing music of various different disciplines and varieties over the last 15 years. Although he's never released anything on Modern Love before, he's a long time friend and associate of the label.
Walker is the manager of Main Attrakionz and has been DJing with them for the last couple of years as the official 'Green Ova DJ'.
'Jack DIce' is fuelled by an interest in bass, Twells being a car audio nerd and Walker having an obsession with 90s southern rap music. These are their first tracks produced together, who know what might follow...

Jean Nipon - Put It In The Trunk / Black Things On Desk / 35 Thieves

To bring you the 8th release, ClekClekBoom searched far and wide for the elusive Jean Nipon. Their journey took them to the shadowy depths of mystic swamps from where this modern-day druid had to be carefully coaxed into the studio. But trust-us, it was well worth the effort!
On his first release for ClekClekBoom, the Institubes original showcases 3 tracks of hard-hitting, deftly-produced, dance-floor menace. 'Put It In The Trunk' combines cascading percussion, disturbingly nonchalant vocal snippets and deep, propulsive, subs. With 'Black Things On Desk' Jean Nipon employs unnervingly detuned vocal samples woven into irresistibly pulsating, punchy percussion. The final tune, '35 Thieves' sees our enigmatic wizzard drop subtle snatches of melody in amongst a grooving beat
which, as ever, strikes the perfect balance between toughness and delicacy.
CCB008 is certain to tear apart dance-floors everywhere with its heavy-hitting, baleful beats. But like any unknown quantity, handle with caution.

The

Having signaled his intent at the start of 2011 with the Avalanche EP - his first dancefloor-focused release for a number of years - PHOTEK has since gone on to deliver the Aviator EP, a much-hyped DJ-Kicks release for !K7, and now... Now is the time for the artist album. Now is the time for KU:PALM. 'I made a conscious decision not to jump straight in with another album, I wanted to come back with the EP's and get the release flow going again. I knew that if I did that, and approached with an open mind, the music and the album would take its course. As it did start to take shape it felt like it was sitting halfway between Modus Operandi and Solaris - which I felt was a good place to be. Now it's finished, it might well be my favourite album to date.' With 'Modus Operandi' and 'Solaris' both regarded as seminal releases of their time - the word 'classic' is no over-statement - this is the message from a producer who has been there and done it all, and is feeling more inspired than ever. Over the past 20-years Rupert Parkes has been on a sonic-journey that's seen him explore all corners of electronic music. Often surprising, always original, it was in 1995 that he released his first Photek release - the still-amazing 'Natural Born Killa' EP for Goldie's Metalheadz. It was a release that transcended the sound of drum'n'bass at the time and his deeper, more intricate take on D'n'B/Jungle went on to form a whole new sub-genre for the scene. Fast-forward to 2012 and he's just as well know for his ambient works, cinematic scores and love of house music, and it's this open-minded approach to sound that has revived so much of his passion for the dancefloor. 'I just really like how diverse clubland is in 20

Destroy Everything

There are no flies on Skuff. He already knows, chances are you probably don't know Skuff at all. That's fine, most people that follow Skuff's music probably don't really know him either... that is until now... You may already know Skuff, co-founder of Rawganics (the UK's biggest ever hip-hop club night), founding member of Delegates of Culture and co-founder of the Supreme Being clothing label. You may know him from the 'End of the World News' LP or maybe the recent 'Deep Covers' projects'. You may well know him as a skillful live performer, having seen him on stage solo or as one half of the popular 'Skuff & Inja Show', which tours globally. You might even have heard his music on BBC radio, or some of his collaboraions with the likes of Mr Scruff, Roots Manuva, Taskforce, Dirty Dike & Arctic Monkeys' Matt Helders. In 2012 Skuff is here to Destroy Everything! His newest offering covers A LOT of topics, and the content is refreshing. Skuff's stories are captivating and each track is strong musically (ie the beats are bangin'!).Destroy Everything displays thought-provoking lyricism over a diverse range of beats. It is laced with Skuff's trademark self-depricating wit and is lyrically a very honest record executed with flair, passion, humour and sensitivity. Destroy Everything is a definite must-have because it continues the UK's (some would say waning) tradition of well constructed albums from genuine heavyweight writers, among whom Skuff absolutely cements his place as a lyrical giant. Featuring Production by Mr Constant, Chemo, Farma G, Bioviolence, Skuff, Inja & Bee 1

Asc - Lost Sync Part 2

In the process of compiling ASC's recent "Out Of Sync', album, we discovered we had at least 2 albums worth of incredible music
that we wanted to be part of releasing. As ASC has also always been part of the reason we created the HORO series at all, it made
sense to compile some of the most special cuts that we couldn't fit onto the album onto their own Horo catalogue numbers as 'Lost
Sync' Parts 1 and 2. These are not left overs, these are main courses we couldn't fit into the perfectly rounded and beautifully realised
product that 'Out Of Sync' became. For the full story of the building of 'Out Of Sync', ' Lost Sync' Part 1 and 2 complete the
experience. This is the soundtracking of a complex future world we can only imagine if we close our eyes and let these expertly
crafted aural pathways transport us.

Fatima Al Qadiri - Desert Strike Ep

5 track EP of cinematic and videogame influenced electronica and bass music from NIGHT SLUGS US sister label FADE TO MIND. The Brooklyn based Kuwaiti artist has been getting press in INTERVIEW, COMPLEX, FADER and this EP gets 7.9 from PITCHFORK. With sparse, decisive percussion, “DESERT STRIKE”’s 5 tracks showcase FATIMA’s melodic virtuosity. Intro “GHOST RAID”, named after "The Ghost" F-117A Nighthawk stealth fighter, launches an aerial bombardment that subsides to sand-blasted lull. “OIL WELL”s half time, freeform progression speaks to the seductive wealth beneath the earth’s surface. The cinematic crunk of “WAR GAMES” and the title track evoke virtual military action, the sound of toy drones seeking recursive targets. Lush and sparse “HYDRA” reminds us of a vast, toxic horizon revived by streams of liquid life.

Distance - Blue Meanie / Searching

Everyone's favourite Dark Lord Of The Dubstep Dancefloor, DJ Distance, returns for a very welcome, hard hitting 12" on Tectonic, showcasing the uncompromising quality he's become known for over the years now. 'Blue Meanie' is sheer power at 140bpm, slamming in at the drop like an amphetamine charged rhino on the rampage. Flip for 'Searching' and hear the deeper side to Distance's productions - tech-y, steppin' but still always dark and dangerous.

Ghettoteknitianz - Ghettoteknitianz Ep

The Ghettoteknitianz are a formidable clique of footwork DJs who count Rashad and Spinn (who have previously released EPs on Planet Mu) among their members, as well as veterans such as Traxman, Gant-Man and younger producers like DJ Manny and DJ Earl. This incredible EP runs a gamut of styles that make clear the connections with house music's past, while pushing things forward into the future in a way that hasn't really been done this clearly in a footwork release before. DJ Rashad and Gant-Man start by taking things right back, on their amazing track 'Heaven Sent' which sounds like footwork inspired by P-funk's synth flares and funky worm energy, or DJ Earl's classic bittersweet house strings and synth trumpet fanfare on 'Enlightenment'. Check the reversed acid line and urban hecticness which ride over a tough soca beat on DJ Spinn's 'Don't Shoot', or Rashad and Manny's superb re-definition of their house, using Chuck Robert's legendary 'My House' speech. Traxman echoes the juke period on his amazing, sparse 'We Are Da Best' with it's boastful, repeated rhyme over snapping, syncopated drums and swirling fretless bass and bleeps. DJ Manny finishes the EP with the straight ahead weed anthem of 'All I Do Is' with it's tight drums wrapped around some repeated vocals and half speed jazz fusion. High quality.
