Al Tourettes - Habit/inventing

Depending on how your mind is fixed, you may process Al Tourettes' unique brand of electronic music as a physical, energetic kind of rave music, or you could find yourself postulating on the dense intricacies that his sonic life-forms contain. Such is the dualistic nature of the Bristol-based producer. It's true that Al Tourettes, as the life's work of Alec Storey, was born out of the vibrant free-party scene of Norfolk (also the launch pad for the infamous Bloc Weekender amongst other UK electronic gems), and those roots in bass-heavy techno boom and pulse throughout his tracks, but this isn't simple soundsystem fodder. If there was one defining quality to Al's craft, it would be funk, the kind of crazed, psychedelic, booty-shaking gospel as laid down by Parliament in the '70s. That's a sound that re-manifested itself throughout the decades as the electro backbone of early hiphop in the 80s, the aquatic machinations of Drexciya in the 90s, and even the omni-limbed freakouts of Autechre. Al represents the next logical distillation of these principles, running his own brand of funk parallel with the contemporary bass music landscape after the dubstep explosion, but never quite fitting into it.

Since making his release debut in 2006, the Tourettes output has come slow and steady for Al, with appearances ranging from Sir Real's electro-bass stable (k)rack-troni(k) to long-time studio compadre Appleblim's Apple Pips imprint. Certainly the remixes he and Mr. 'Blim have cooked up for Planetary Assault Systems and Axel Boman amongst others have helped Al reach a wider audience, but his uncompromising and unclassifiable sound has ensured any accolades arrive on his terms. It's a brave artist who gets commissioned to reinterpret the work of Tchaikovsky for a Hollywood movie (the Oscar-winning Black Swan) and turns out the kind of disorientating delerium that wound up soundtracking Natalie Portman's first (fictional) ecstasy experience.

While the recorded music may have been carefully dissipated over time, the live experience is the only real way to get a handle on just how much music Al makes. Even a space as short as four weeks can yield a completely new collection of tracks, loops, skits and grooves, mercilessly wielded and propelled at the crowd to inspire dance moves people never knew they had inside themselves. Far from the dry, uninspiring automation of so many 'live' sets, Al's performances shudder and shake with the vitality of human control, no more apparent than in his razor-sharp battery of his drum pads. With the surface barely scratched on what Al Tourettes' ever-active mind can conjure up, from the absurd and grotesque to the elegiac and beautiful, one can only advise you keep the name locked, your mind open and your ass ready to follow.

Ard Bit - Yelleen / Tape Cassette

This is a Cassette, No Vinyl! The next lowriders release is something special, this will be with dutch producer ARD BIT on a cassette and digital only format. Lowriders is proud to present this new release Yelleen by Ard Bit. After previous releases on Symbolic Interaction and Shipwrec and appearances on n5MD, Onrecords and Thin Consolation he finds a warm nest at Lowriders. The Yelleen EP consists of 6 tracks. Cribble and Vixen were made in collaboration with Jor Mesin (part of the beatrotateproject). The two tracks are a step further away from the IDM straitjacket but it stays in the touch and feel of the latter. The transparency and openness is what gives it its unique character. Cribble moves strongly into the dubby glitch sound with references to Pole and Plaid. The detailing on Vixen is beautiful, hectic, Warp-ish. A massive blowing bass horn provides the lead and contrast. Yelleen is something entirely different. It's a warm, light and seductive roller. Perfect for the dancefloor To top it off Alphabets Heaven, Julien Mier and Strand are on the remix duties for Yelleen. Alphabets Heaven combines sounds of the other tracks within the Yelleen setting. It treats us on a kitchensink feel, organic and housy. Julien Mier takes the housy elements to the Chi-town freakness and makes you go all the juke way. Strand brings on some electro-funk boogie in the Skweee corner of madness. Analog twists with Yelleen details.

Baobinga & I.d Ft. Rider Shafique - Gun Tallk / Lickle Furthe

BUILD007 sees one of the hottest tracks from Baobinga's critically acclaimed 'Joint Ventures' collaborative project flipped by one the fastest-rising producers of the last 12 months. 'Gun Talk' by Baobinga & I.D., featuring the dread vocals of Rider Shafique, attracted support from across the world of forward-thinking DJs - most notably appearing as a highlight of Mary-Anne Hobbs 2011 Sonar performance... to a crowd of 10,000 in Barcelona. For this release, we enlisted Kahn to rework the tune with his trademark blend of grime-vibes and soundsystem bass-pressure. Having appeared twice on the legendary Punch Drunk label, and fresh from remixing Joker, it's pretty much an open secret that Kahn is the Bristol producer set to blow this year. Alongside the original 'Gun Talk', a fresh Baobinga & I.D. beat is blessed with Rider's unique vocals - 'Lickle Further' blending funky, bashment and dancehall vibes together into a gyal-friendly dancefloor killer.

Bass Clef - Reeling Skullways 2x12"

Following a busy year of stylistically varied releases under various guises on his own Magic + Dreams label, Ralph Cumbers delivers his first long-player for Punch Drunk. With a title lifted from the lysergic prose of a Brian Aldiss novel and grooves informed by the loopier, more Martian aspects of Chi-town jack and Detroit techno-soul, 'Reeling Skullways' marks a subtle, but highly alluring development in the evolution of Cumbers' primary recording project. Long-term Bass Clef fans may be surprised by the lack of samples on this album, and in many ways it follows a similar creative process to his recent work as Some Truths, with most rhythms and textures sculpted from the raw, elemental waveforms of modular analogue synthesis. But with tighter editing, contagious melodies and perfectly positioned drum patterns, the end results reveal Bass Clef simultaneously at his most stripped-back, focused, playful, complicated, emotional and irresistibly groovy. Unfettered by fashionable production tricks, imbued with a timeless machine-soul heart, 'Reeling Skullways' is one of those albums you'll be reaching for again and again.

Beaumont - Never Love Me

Beaumont steps up for the next release on Hotflush, with his 'Never Love Me EP'. The young Scottish producer Michael Rintoul created a slice of hypnotic R&B dream pop on last year's 'Blush Reponse EP'. It was described by inimitable Brighton-based blog 20jazzfunkgreats as having produced, 'by a strike of genius and inspiration', the authentic soundtrack to 'a really cool Z-series 80s thriller'. This time round, the vocal work on the title track is reduced to a barely intelligible processed warble, which provides the scaffolding that supports the sparse drums, synth washes and plucked melody. 'Uptown' begins with Carpenter-esque keys of dread, but is quickly drenched in a warm shower of shimmering keys that tussles with the shuffling half-beat. The 'Rendez-Vouz' could be on Mars, cosmic winds billowing, until a snaking bassline throbs into sight, Beaumont's impeccably programmed drums playing off against the tense synths. 'Star cross'd lovers' indeed upon the EP's closer, 'Verona Beach', the tidal back and forth grounding, the sound of the sun setting on a Miami Vice beach, but disturbed into syncopated sense.

Behling & Simpson - Ep2

Futureboogie poster boys Behling & Simpson step up for another masterclass in low slung, bass tinged house, enlisting the skills of hot London based producer James Fox for 'EP2'.

With past releases garnering support from industry heavyweights such as Pete Tong, Tensnake, Julio Bashmore and Funk D'Void, honorary Bristolians and long-time DJs Behling & Simpson are truly carving out a place in the UK house scene. All about the space explored at the lower bpms, making room for swing and groove whilst keeping it bumping
and flooded with warm bass - a B&S track can sound like Derrick Carter on codeine. With classic jungle and techno at the roots of their musical upbringing and an extensive collection of solo releases between them under various guises, B&S have taken their passion for drums, swing and bounce to the house range with sparkling results on the
Futureboogie imprint. Watch out for the Boogiefuturo Edits series (featuring re-licks of Faith Evans and Julio Bashmore), soon to be re-pressed after taking the world by storm last year.

The first two tracks of 'EP2' demonstrate the sheer studio compatibility with James Fox as 'Work That Body' launches the EP with a richly layered dance floor workout centred on a classic RnB sample. As ever it's a full-bodied seductive treat where more is more and slow is best as plenty of low-end rumbles underneath the pitched down jacking groove and uplifting keys. Next up, the more subtle analogue stylings of 'Tangled' teem with rhythmic nuances, thickly layered percussion and melodic curves.

Another talent at the forefront of the new breed, James Fox, made a huge impact with his debut releases 'Put It Back' on TAKE Records and the mighty summer 2011 anthem 'New Jack Swing' on Brighton's Well Rounded Housing Project. James met Behling & Simpson back in the day when they used to go raving in the same dingy sweatboxes in
Manchester. Aliases, musical styles and cities have since changed and while they may spend less time bonding at Whalley Range after parties, the producers have thankfully ended up in the studio together where the chemistry is clear.

The second half of the EP is pure Behling & Simpson, with 'AAW' being their take on chunky drum-led NY House with a twist, while 'Good Thang' takes classic New Jack Swing as a starting part, before veering off wildly into the world of swinging drums and bass-led grooves. In a nutshell, another golden release for Futureboogie.

Biome & Dcult - Persepolis / Inner Peace

After huge success digitally the MUD camp finally hit wax in the form of the eagerly anticipated and much hyped MUV001. MUD kicked off in October of 2011, fronted by Macabre unit originator and veteran Raff (Demon) and quickly garnered huge support from 001-005, bringing releases from hot properties Biome, DCult, Demon himself, Catacombs, Versa, N-Dread and Rowl so far. The first vinyl press from the camp see's Biome and DCult take a side each on this sinister showdown Biome's Persepolis has been a staple in the bags of the scene's elite for the last few months with support from Youngsta, Kryptic Minds, and Seven. Side A brings a gnarling, twisting neck breaker; with Biome's trademark snarls and growls dancing in the gaps between tight industrial drums, while a low slung, chest pulverising bass rises up throughout. Another straight Biome banger you can't help but stomp to! The flip see's an outing for Essex based producer DCult, who featured on the excellent MUD001 release. Inner Peace has gained plenty of fans after heavy support from Youngsta amongst others. It's sinister pads envelope you from the intro, coupled with eerie vocals snips that draw you in even further. You're hooked before the pulsing halfstep bass and macabre snarls kick in. Beautifully spacious yet full of layers, the pristine production wraps this into one nasty roller!

Blu Mar Ten - Love Is The Devil Part One

Blu Mar Ten releases the first in a three-part series of remixes from their album 'Love is the Devil'. Part One features reworkings from dBridge and Marcus Intalex. All Thoughts Are Prayers (Marcus Intalex remix) - Where the original version of All Thoughts Are Prayers drifted and meandered in semi-ambient territory, Marcus Intalex drags it kicking & screaming into euphoric dancefloor territory. True hands-in-the-air breakdowns give way to a classic liquid palette before being taken over by a smooth reese bassline that always gets a cheer from the crowd. Marcus has done what he does best, creating emotion-driven tracks for the floor that never compromise on quality. Sweet Little Supernova (dBridge remix) - In stark contrast to the user-friendliness of the Intalex remix, dBridge turns in a discordant and unsettling version of 'Sweet Little Supernova'. Twisting up the original's sweet harmonies and pattering percussion, dBridge introduces hammering breaks and a disturbing bassline before throwing ear-piercing frequencies and distortion into the mix while bringing the previously-ethereal vocal line right to the forefront. A harmonically difficult and challenging remix, this version is only for those who are prepared to listen to music more than once to get something out of it.

Cessman - Gurkha / Stampede / Frankenstein Dub

Croydon's Cessman, laying down his first release for Sin City brings roots culture dubstep back in 2012, the original essence of the scene. Previous support from Mala, Coki, Hatcha and N-Type Gurkha: Reminiscent of the older 2006 style dubstep. Minimal and eerie with thunderous stomping sub and rolling beats. Currently being Battered on Hatcha's Kiss FM show Stampede: Previously unreleased dubplate, battered by N-Type, Kromestar, Coki and Mala. Given a 2012 once over, now featuring the 1st Dubstep MC, Crazy D, this track brings memories of DMZ at 3rd base, Brixton. Frankenstein Dub: Fast paced techy bass and drum. Fits nicely into the 2012 house/dub sound that is evolving currently. This is becoming a staple in N-types set.

Dbridge Presents Velvit - Passing Encounter / Scarlett

Bringing his sound to a new boil, dBridge gives us the first serving of 'Velvit' with these two new monster tracks. Following on as the second course of Convex Industries, dBridge is no stranger to the insatiable appetite of electronic music. Showcasing his mastership with these solid tracks, defying tempo and genre, there is a taste for Velvit lingering on everyone's tongue. Passing Encounter: dBridge shows his new Velvit alias is a delectable force to be reckoned with. Dipped in 90s jungle with 2012 construction, 'Passing Encounter' fuses a catchy lead and tribal beat that simmers over an 808 bass heat, finished off with a drizzle of lush vocals. Scarlett: 'Scarlett' is caramelised in a classic reese bass line reminiscent of early Kevin Saunderson. Relentless 4×4 kicks stew over the thickest marinade of bass and detuned synth drones. Already with heavy play from Jon Convex, Martyn, Jimmy Edgar, Benji B (just to name a few) this track is fast becoming a favourite on the summer menu.

It's been a while since we have seen a release from DFRNT for On The Edge, but I'm proud to announce, the wait is finally over! This 3 track EP provides us with an abundance of different flavours, but still retains the genius sound that is DFRNT at the very core of every tune. Let me first draw to your attention to 'The Big Freeze'. It's a Drum and Bass track that has been moulded like a true pro. It sounds like DFRNT has been producing D+B for a long time with the finishes on this track, but believe it's one of his earlier efforts. It's a refreshing BPM for his take on electronic music and hope to hear more of the same from DFRNT soon. Then DFRNT shows us what he is all about when he goes all out 4X4. A dirty, gritty Techno roller (with a skip) that will blow your socks off! Love the production on this one. Then we have 'Monday Morning'. This does exactly what it says on the tin, just the type of tune you need to bring you down after a heavy weekend. As though that wasn't enough, there is a 170 remix from man of the moment, Indigo! Support comes from: Hatti Vatti, Synkro, Versa, Mary Ann Hobbs, Kissy Sell Out, Fused Forces, Loxy, DJ Rum, 501 and Truth to name a few.

30.03.2012

Limited pressing of 300 heavyweight vinyls with a gold screen printed cover, inner sleeve embossing and hand numbered. 'This is sick. Fuck Genres.' - Youtube comment on 'Detonate' It's hard to know where to place Dismantle's new evolution of 140bpm sounds. Some describe it as Clubstep others are arguing it's somewhere between Moombahton and Dutch House. All we know, and this is for certain, is that they smash up any rave they are played at. Hailing from Brighton, U.K, the exceptionally talented 19 year old producer has been putting out hard hitting dubstep since 2008. His restless and creative mind has caused him to explore the genre and push Dubstep into a new direction. The success of this new sound is confirmed by crowd reaction every week at clubs across the globe. DETONATE - This is a peak set tune, no doubt. A building, rising, endorphin enriching intro literally detonates and explodes into a pounding four four rhythm. There's really no way out once this tune drops and listeners are in for the full ride. 2 IN 1 - The snares on the introduction hint at the pace and style of this tune but in no way prepare the listener for the absolutely meaty drop that thumps on through. This then parts like the red sea to make way for a bleep-tastic army of push button telephones that feast on bass riffs. Another floor shaker for definite.

For Distal, 28 year old Atlanta producer Michael Rathbun, his highly anticipated debut album 'Civilization' is the crowning point of his past two years of work. Releases and remixes for labels such as Soul Jazz Records, Grizzly, Fortified Audio, Trouble & Bass, Seclusiasis and Tectonic (not to mention his own imprint, Embassy Recordings, which he runs in tandem with old school friend Ethan Anderson aka Mite), and tours with Pearson Sound and Africa Hi Tech has seen his name on the lips of discerning electronic tastemakers worldwide. Before entering the world of production, Distal spent a few years researching a sensational auditory phenomenon called Synesthesia at Georgia State University. One day while digging through break-core records he stumbled upon a sound that would inspire him to launch his production career. This record, in a turn of complete serendipity, was 'Punisher' by Tectonic label head Pinch. Using his newfound passion, traditional teachings and his scientific studies in unison he ran head first into the studio. Taking influences from his love of techno, jungle and hardcore, Distal's sound fluctuates between a wide array of moods, rhythms and tempos that veer between dubstep, juke, footwork, house and, naturally being from Atlanta, southern hip hop. From popping 808 cowbells on opener 'The Sun' to dancehall minimalism in 'Rattlesnake' to the Balearic tribalism of 'She Wears Pearls'; these elements join the dots on Distal's map of 'Civilization'.

Dot - Calling Home Cd
  • 1: Dot - Mx4

Calling Home is the debut album from Dot a.k.a. Natasha Musevic coming out on Read Write Music. Having had various tracks released through Imminent (former Immigrant) Recordings, this female dubstep producer chooses to introduce a truly diverse set of tunes, including the most distinctive feature of the album that at the same time shows a new approach to her music production - her vocals. This might imply an idea of tenderness but with an incredible fatness of beats, a combination of sub bass deepness, aggression and edginess intervening throughout the whole album, Dot proves the opposite. The album created in 2009 starts off with unique deepness in the first track MX4, announcing the feeling of the album which - like the track itself - tries to trick you with the introductory soft vocals but instead hits you with its massive sub space. The tension grows in the following tracks, pumping up the pressure through atmospheric sounds, dark and hard-edged beats, reaching its peak in Ratio which is with its mixture of four on the floor rhythm and minimal brake downs an absolute dance floor killer. The following Dreamz Are Forever takes a slower and dreamier pace and a sudden cut happens in the shorter Interlude that follows, proving the unpredictability and the experimental spirit of the album. The journey continues in a melodic manner, gradually building up the tempo from a jungle inspired feel in IMF to the deep and yet relaxed end. The eleven tracks on Calling Home show Dot's ability to combine the usually unimaginable: quirky piano melodies flow on a thick sub bass line, adding a classical touch to it, her soft voice contradicts and at the same time complements the criticism of her lyrics, interlacing with a variety of sounds, ranging from hardedged dubstep to pure instrumental and ambiental tunes. Dot's debut album manages to string together industrialized and yet atmospheric tracks, showing more than enough distinctiveness to stand out from her British counterparts.

Eleven Tigers - Stableface Ep Pt 1

Stableface", one of the standout tracks from Lithuanian producer Eleven Tigers' debut album "Clouds Are Mountains" finds itself pride of place on this 12" release from Soul Motive. Opening with an extended intro of cracked Burial-like atmospherics, the track soon gains a life of its own with its minimal 2-step beat and cracked vocal samples, complete with the kind of intricate melodicism of Four Tet. On the flip side Bristol's Peverelist turns in a fine reworking of the track. Taking the already sparse original and extending its panoramic reach even further, he concentrates on the micro qualities of the rhythms, opens up huge holes in the original's deft tapestry and creates a masterful reworking which brings out the dubstep within its DNA.

Freddy K is an icon of the historic Italian techno scene. In 90's his productions were on the historic ACV Records label. Then over the years has always been one of the key points of the techno scene, with record music stores, radio shows (Virus) and new labels like the historic Elettronica Romana (he was one of two minds that created this label, with Sandro Nasonte). His experience led him to be behind many current projects, he moved to Berlin. This time it wants to make its contribution on his own label which is already out talents like Conrad Van Orton and Shapednoise (and it's only the beginning). A label on vinyl only!
Here begins a series in 10 "which will be just him and friends. Here he presents his own original tracks and a track on the other side along with another new (but not young) artist who has quickly attracted the attention of many artists in the world with his new label Kript: Ken Karter.

Freddy K's track is pure techno. A trip that starts hypnotic. Sounds of a modern techno rhythm already heavy...it's just the beginning. Drones and metallic sounds create the expectation. Sounds strange and perverse to make up the rhythm again after the first break. A constant sound in the background makes you totally hypnotized. The sound goes up like an alarm to go off. But you are not yet arrived. At the second break .. sounds and distortions open up in a frenzy of techno obsessive and destructive. No mercy!
On the other side, the track with Ken Karter will fight two different schools. Noise, an almost drum'n'bass rhythm break. Sounds sick of Ken Karter. hysterical atmosphere and rhythmic electronics. A journey through the experiences of two artists who are attracted to each other. Everything explodes after a series of psychedelic and visionary atmosphere. Until you get to TB303 sounds distorted and very old school. Amazing!
