The early summer bloom of 1992 felt like it had been pollinated by a lot of sunshine-loving records from the year before, optimistic headrushes that embraced hedonistic bliss or at least a sweeter ride. There was still an element of bedroom wistfulness to singles like Higher Than The Sun, Nothing Can Stop Us and even Paris Angels’ Perfume but there was no denying the appeal that techno, rave and Bleep held, especially when it was microdosed. Bands were more willing to experiment with technology and producers, if not necessarily going for all whistles-blazing club bangers.

The Orchids, hailing from the suburbs of Glasgow were unlikely to ever emerge from their hood as contenders for a deal on Soma Records (which had begun in 1991 in that city) but they evidently wanted to stretch their boundaries beyond their introverted debut. Unholy Soul is somewhat breezier than Lyceum. It’s still laced with a Scottish melancholy but there’s more breathing space within the production. They’d hinted as much on their 12” ‘Penetration’ EP from 1991 and lovelorn songs such as Waiting For The Storm and Peaches are now spiked by absent-minded cherubs with an ear for the 3.a.m comedown.

As lead singer James Hackett says today: “Unholy Soul was the first time we had spent more than a couple of days in the studio, doing so after work. It was a thrilling period of creativity and we had most of the songs written but not enough. We didn’t worry about that too much though because with Ian Carmichael there was a new opportunity for studio generation. Also this was the first time we had heard Pauline (Hynds) singing with One Dove so we asked her to sing on some of the songs. We were obviously influenced by a lot of the music of the time but you can still hear it’s The Orchids at heart”.

The next year of course One Dove (with Carmichael programming) released their debut album - produced by Andrew Weatherall - on the Boy’s Own label. It felt like there was a lot of ideas being spun back and forth between artists and producers in the early 90s. If some of the records also sound very much of that time that’s no bad thing either. There was a lot of loved-up nostalgia for the 60s then so it’s no surprise that many of the records have a youthful exuberance coupled to a technological innocence, that’s the charm.

A very classic, auditorily both honest and skillful, techno mini-album by US producers D-Knox and Tim Xavier of Black Nation, 773 Tekno, Limited 400serie, and Sonic Mind fame. The duo's six-tracker nods to old-school US 'multitrack' underground techno EPs, but is bombastically engineered for club systems. Stunningly starting with "Soul Kraft Intro", a hymn for the Detroit techno legacy, only to slip into the tracky club rider "Stream Of Consciousness" with short stabs and alarming strings. Ripping acidic riffs and multifaceted hi-hat programming are signatures throughout, particularly highlighted by the teeth-grinding Chicago-styled (almost 'French Touch' compressed) "Dead Star Grinder", and not the least by the ultimately classic "Tomorrow Is A Rainy Day" with its broken beat and deep-standing forward-driving chordal beauty.

After meeting and working with Janko Nilovic - the extraordinary French library maestro - on a new album, while traveling and performing together around the world for almost 10 years, Igor Zhukovsky & Romeo Miussky - the multi-instrumentalist production duo, and rhythm core of The Soul Surfers - were inspired to make a record of free, spiritual, esoteric sounds which blended together on tape and made Sound Excitement happen.Drawing on their experience as soundtrack composers and using heavyweight Soviet analog equipment, including a few vintage personal instruments belonging to some legends of the Soviet leftfield music scene, Igor & Romeo started experimenting with genre-blending music. The outcome of their recordings are a mixed bag of different moods and genres."It's something similar to a library record or more like a compilation of many different library records on one LP for a good decade if you know what I mean? It's the work which we're really excited about and excited to share with you! ...oh that's hell of a wordplay!"

Following international tours across Australia, Southeast Asia, China and Europe, as well as a live session for KEXP, Saigon Soul Revival return with their new album “Chốn Ta Về” (“The Place We Return To”).

Their single “Ai Thật Lòng Yêu Ai” was recently included in the permanent exhibition of the Philharmonie de Paris, underlining the band’s growing cultural impact.

Produced by Jan Hagenkötter and recorded in Ho Chi Minh City, the album blends Vietnamese musical heritage with global influences. Singer and songwriter Nguyễn Anh Minh describes it as a journey of finding one’s way back home through love, loss and self-discovery.

Building on 2024’s “Mối Lương Duyên,” the album expands its sound with traditional instruments such as the T’rung and Sáo Trúc. Guest appearances include Vietnamese multi-instrumentalist Đinh Nhật Minh and renowned jazz saxophonist Trần Mạnh Tuấn, featured on “Ơ Kìa, Em Ơi.” Longtime collaborator Nguyễn Thị Hải Phượng returns on Đàn Tranh and Đàn Bầu, while guitarist Indy Laville plays Đàn Nguyệt on selected tracks.

Tracks like “Lý Qua Dub” and “Khúc Tình Yên Vui” highlight connections between Vietnamese and regional musical traditions, while “Chachacha Ngây Thơ” reflects Latin influences long embraced in Vietnam.

Recorded and mixed fully analog at In The Box Studios in Saigon by engineer Benjamin James, the album embodies the band’s self-described style: “Global Pop” rooted in Vietnamese culture and open to the world.

The band also contributed music to the upcoming James Bond game “007 First Light” and the documentary “Y Vân: The Lost Sounds of Saigon.”

Addictive and super-catchy classic Studio One instrumental cut led by the great saxophonist Lester Sterling, a founding member of The Skatalites. Sterling recorded extensively for Clement Dodd and this single was released in 1969 with The Paragon"s killer rocksteady "My Satisfaction" on the flip. The song "Afrikaan Beat" was originally recorded by the German orchestra leader Bert Kaempfert and was based on South African Kwela style of music. "Afrikaan Beat" featured on Soul Jazz Records" Studio One Scorcher.

First time on 45 for the other early Don Carlos killer from the Wackie's/Joe Morgan/Soul Syndicate connection. Previously only released on the "Reckless Roots Rockers" compilation LP. Rhythm laid & tune voiced in JA, mixed and overdubbed at Wackie's in NYC.

Originally released in Jamaica in 1968 as The Actions and in the UK as The Lyrics (and sometimes known as The Splendors!), whichever way you look at it this a superb slice of rare rocksteady complete with the addictively catchy tune by the all-girl group The Tonettes on the flip.

Regular contributor Vick Lavender returns to Cataleya Music for a Soulful vocal mission with Angel-A. They have previously worked together on songs like Rain for Lavender's Sophisticado Recordings and G.I.R.L. for Phuture Sole Recordings. Here we have Soul Travel (Day & Nite, Nite & Day). This song is in the same vein and features positive vocals from Angel-A over a stylish key driven groove. The vocal is backed by an Instrumental Mix where the key driven melody and complex percussion rhythms take center stage, assisted by star gazing synths. This is another rich composition from Vick Lavender with uplifting lyrics from Angel-A.

Mara TK, a golden voiced, Maori-Scottish world-wandering citizen of Aotearoa (New Zealand) announces his debut solo album 'Bad Meditation', released 7th May on Extra Soul Perception. Stepping out on his own, Mara TK is the former frontman of the acclaimed Kiwi future soul trio Electric Wire Hustle. Written and produced by Mara himself, 'Bad Meditation' is his 13 track opus, a deeply personal account of heritage, love, loss and healing.

An alumnus of Red Music Academy in Toronto, Mara TK's work beyond Electric Wire Hustle has seen him collaborate with critically lauded names including Om'Mas Keith of Sa-Ra Creative Partners, Detroit producer and J Dilla collaborator Waajeed, and Steve Spacek.

William Onyeabor was born outside Enugu, a small, rural town in Eastern Nigeria, he created his own genre of African electronic funk in the late 70s and early 80s, making music completely unique for his time. Today, he is reaching cult status among a growing list of admirers, including everyone from Damon Albarn and Hot Chip to Carl Craig and Madlib, with some likening him to the Kraftwerk of West Africa, or a precursor to LCD Soundsystem.

Among the crate-digging few that knew of him, he is considered a complete myth. While he has never performed live and almost never given interviews, his fantastical biography is scattered and has to this day not been verified. And he refused to speak about anything regarding the past.

According to various rumors, he left home following the Biafran War and went to study cinematography in the Soviet Union, returning in the mid-70s to start his own film company and record label, Wilfilms. He then self-released eight remarkable records from 1978-1985. He wrote and produced everything on his own, and possibly played every instrument himself. Then, at some point of his life, he became born again and denounced his earlier music, deciding it is something he would never speak about.

Your favourite edits (probably) crew, Local Sugar Diggers, aka the trio of sonic sculptors that are Scruscru, Tony Lavrutz and Los Protos all come together here on a new 7" offshoot label from the Soul Service. The a-side cut 'Rave w Polsce' is a full-fat funker with deep cut grooves that roll on rubbery bass and soar with rasping wind leads. Plenty is going on wherever you listen and it all serves to get you moving. 'Otra Ritmo' is an immediate portal to a communal get down somewhere sun-baked and lush with green in South America. The horns, the freewheeling percussion and the loosely assembled rhythm are all irresistible invitations to cut loose.

Dennis & Christy Soares are a husband-and-wife duo whose prolific output - over 100 albums and nearly 2,000 songs recorded across CD, cassette, vinyl, and streaming - stands as one of the most quietly remarkable self-made catalogs in contemporary music. Based for two decades on the Big Island of Hawai'i before recently relocating to Centralia, Washington, the pair have been making music together since meeting at San Joaquin Delta College in 1986, channeling a DIY spirit rooted in sincerity, spirituality, and an unshakeable belief in the power of a song. The dream team is back! Borrowed Identity and his boyhood friend Mechanical Soul Brother have been doing hot sessions in their studio and the output is the fantastic „Return to yourself EP“. All tunes have a classic yet modern house flair. The A-side is full of groovy rhythms, deeeeeep basslines, splendid vocals and subtle acid lines - „just be yourself“ might even slightly recall Larry Heard/Mr. White’s „the sun can’t compare“! The club friendly b-side offers two versions of „point of no return“. The 2 am version has those old schoolish drums and some blissful sounds and voices, just the way we love it, whereas the 6am version is the more straight forward, catchy early morning groover. Written by Honoré and recalling the sweet n' tender vintage of 70s southern soul, the full Detroit Soulchestra swells around houseband The Detroit Lovers – a groove that reminded Honoré of growing up in the Motor City, watching lovers stepping together in the ballrooms of Detroit. Most tracks here are making their debut outside of Japan and the album, like its predecessors, has been designed by Manuel Sepulveda (Optigram) and is annotated by DJ Notoya. The audio has been newly mastered in Tokyo by Nippon Columbia Records and remastered for vinyl by Colorsound in Paris.

Jazz guitarist Roland Gresham is a native of Nashville, Tennessee recording several albums during his career. In 1984 he released a cassette album that contained the spectacular gospel soul track ‘The Touch Of The Master’s Hand’ - featuring on lead vocals accomplished gospel artist Duane Hamilton.
