Genre bender Phon.o finds new perfection in merging UK bass music with techno, garage and even house music. Not in a wild mash-up kind of way, but very organic and natural sounding. 'Schn33' is a guaranteed floor filler for all kinds of dance music Djs. No matter where, no matter when, no matter what mixed with, this is an anthem! Perfectly supplemented with a strong B-Side, this might be the strongest Phon.o single yet.

06.05.2013

After last year's dystopic debut, 'Super Strength EP', rising Parisian Cédric Bros AKA Marcelus returns to Tresor with something a little more deep and shiny in 'Emerald'. Once again Marcelus conjures up the spirits of Detroit and Berlin techno, moulding them here into dreamy modern house incantations—an inspired blurring of the lines the well-versed Frenchman has been rehearsing over the last decade. It was two astounding first releases for DJ Deep's Deeply Rooted House imprint that made the underground dance community sit up and take notice, records that emitted an unprecedented level of craftsmanship for a fresh-faced newcomer.
*He has continued to impress on follow up releases over the last few years, meanwhile proving to be a flexible and intriguing sound designer, playing with numerous styles and yet always turning in something distinctly 'Marcelus'. 'Emerald' is no different, but instead of tough and rushing euphoria, he delivers something altogether warm and frothy, revealing yet another side to this prismic producer, as well as adding a lighter node to the Tresor catalogue.

Darko Esser - Out Of Context Ep

It's been 4 years since labelboss Darko Esser released an EP of his own on Wolfskuil Ltd. The focus as of late has been on his Tripeo project, resulting in two vinyl only Trips to critical acclaim. All the studio activity led to a whole bunch of other music as well and a few of his favorite sessions are bundled on this conceptual EP.

We all can relate to the feeling of being Out Of Context, that we have lost touch with our environment and the people around us or are simply just lost for words. Darko translated these abstract feelings into a soundtrack in three parts (Space, Time, Translation) as music is sometimes a better indicator of how we feel then words. Not suprisingly the result is a soundtrack that is quite moody, hypnotic and multi-layered. It's dub- and detroit-techno, Esser style. Recognizable but at the same time very distinct and personal, melodies wrapped in abstract sound design, the atmosphere both happy and sad.

Ambiguity and introspection have always been a big part of his work, this EP just takes it to the next level.

Herva - What I Feel

12inchDSR-E2
Delsin Records
18.04.2013

Having unleashed his debut LP on Bosconi Records last year, Italian Herva here serves up four new tracks for the second in Delsin's electronica series. They see him move away from the house of his debut, and instead explore atmospheric worlds of sound that are part techno, part IDM and part something all together new.
Opener 'Paranoid Thinking' emerges from a sea of underwater bleeps and bells into a frantic, heavily textured soundscape with no real beat but many layers of glistening, harmonic sound. 'Crocodile Tears' is slight more conventional, but still seems constructed from snippets of pianos, finger clicks, squelchy percussion and more, with each element piled on top of each other into a beguiling tapestry.

'Gorilla's Machine' sounds like Four Tet making techno - lots of splintered melodies bring plenty of light to the quick, dark and pummelling techno undercurrent that props the whole thing up. Finally, 'Snow And Clouds' sees a stiff kick drum lean into a snowy blizzard of fine grain sonics with the odd spoken word breaking through at freaky intervals. One thing's for sure here - there is nothing conventional about Herva's techno.

Terrence Dixon - From The Far Future Pt.2 2x12"

Twelve years ago Tresor Records released Terrence Dixon's debut album 'From The Far Future' - a personal homage to the art and ancestry of techno, culminating in a discursive and dream-like course through the genre's many tomes, complete with subtle nods to key protagonists such as Kraftwerk, Derrick May and Juan Atkins. A luminescent and ethereal catalogue of tracks awash with shimmery synths and taught rhythmical programming - that still holds true today, 'From The Far Future' made for a stunning first full length that cemented Dixon's already proven credentials from his Population One work and Utensil Records foundations.
*After a string of stylistically rich releases - including another album, 'Train Of Thought', this time for Cologne-based label Yore Records - the Detroit native returns to Tresor Records with 'From The Far Future Pt.2' - an ambitious, scopey and deeply personal sequel.

Synchrojack - Archive (180g Vinyl 12")

The label arm of booking agency Vibes & Pepper have come through with something a bit special for their latest release, with a collection of tracks from the archives of UK house producers Synchrojack. "Back To The Shack" kicks things off with a warm but relentless Detroit house groove, its 303 bassline looping inwards on crisp hi-hats and snare rolls, while "Windfalls" offers a dusty house number with loose, jazzy beats worthy of The Godson. On the flip, "Is It" offers a classic sequence of oven-warm organ chords with trumpet samples buried deep within, while "One (Edit)" offers a semi-improvisational piece of proto-beatdown house, where unpredictable keys mingle with marimba tones and deep sub-bass.

Breach & Dark Sky - The Click / Fallout

Available on very limited hand stamped 180gram
vinyl. The result of a creative coming-together of
two very different producers, Breach and Dark Sky
present the somewhat unexpected sounding 'The
Click' on Naked Naked. As the fourth EP from the
imprint, which has seen the release of label boss
Breach's 'You Won't Find Love Again' and Breach
and Midland's collaborative '101 & Somewhere EP'
previously, 'The Click' continues to champion UK
sounds in line with the London imprint's aesthetic.
Long term admirers of each other's work, 'The Click'
originated after Ben Westbeech invited the Dark
Sky trio to work on his forthcoming album. With four
creative brains in the studio eager to showcase their
sound and a variety of production techniques to
match Westbeech's hardware-laden workspace, it
soon became clear that the results were feeling
more suited to his Breach project. And so, NKD004
was born.
Title track 'The Click' draws you into some seriously
dark house production with a clanging, muted
heartbeat introduction. The first vocal soon gives
way to an addictive, yet ominous, groove where
distant hisses, unsettling chatters and swarming
flies create an altogether disconcerting dance
floor....

Steve Pointdexter - Computer Madness Re:vision #2

Re:Vision series restarts with Steve Poindexter's timeless classic 'Computer Madness'. We are very honored and excited to be able to re-release this beast of a track! It's hard to imagine that this was really created over 2 decades ago. So the task at hand was to find the right contemporaries to revise this masterpiece, we didn't have to look far to find the man for the job: Function is an old friend here at THEMA, and things got even better when he brought in Jerome Sydenham to co-produce the second treatment. It's thus with great pride we announce our Re:Vision of Computer Madness, featuring two resolutely modern reinterpretations of Poindexter's classic.
The original by Poindexter dates all the way from 1989 and is a brief, headlong rush into drum machine-fueled raw acid and has long been a staple of the genre for many as well as the first release on the seminal Musique Records. We wanted to start off with a stomper, so for the whole A side, we have Function with occasional co-conspirator Sydenham with an unstoppable driving interpretation that straightens the busy drums of the original into a pounding techno pulse and takes repeated, changing portions of the original acid line as its central riff. Much of the action here occurs in the dirty, growling bass the pair add to the lower register; this is peak time damage for the most unrelenting floors. On the flip side we start off with Function's deep, dubbed out reinterpretation, but it soon strides forward into the style of psychedelic but jacking techno familiar from his recent, more extroverted output. Even at almost double the length of the original, there's still a palpable aura of reverence to the way he approaches the track; it should come as no surprise that he ranks it highly in his favorites list. Then of course we finish off with Poindexter's original 1989 version, with all its original bang and glory. Still sounds fresh and as inspiring as it did the first time we heard this way back when...
Functioning as a reunion for friends as well as a re-evaluation of past and present achievements, Re:Vision looks back to the rich past while still moving unstoppably into the future. Look out for the next 2 releases in the Re:Vision series that's following up next!
It's been awhile since we at THEMA visited our Re:Vision series, where we pay homage to those that have influenced us and bring historical accomplishments into contemporary focus. It started with DJ Slip's classic 'Available Light' (THEMA017) featuring two incredibly well sought after remixes of the celebrated original by Franco Cinelli and Mikael Stavöstrand. Now revisiting the series
with renewed dedication, we've carefully selected three classic underground tracks that reverberate in past and present for re-evaluation by a cadre of contemporary techno's finest talent.

Finally available on vinyl, without pretension or smug justification of "clever" sampling, is the Improper Trax rework of the Chicago '80s classic "It's You." Held high by many a DJ as the "superior" version of the highly limited late 2012 cover, thanks to its floor-focused treatment and unabashed preference to jack, it's made the rounds at Panorama Bar, Fabric, Smart Bar, Rinse.FM and pretty much every other fine dance music institution around the globe. Despite antagonizing copyright claims on Youtube, empty threats from fake lawyers, and tough-guy chest-thumping from boastful Belgians, "The Heat" flips the dial to "fuck you" and lays it out for The People to just enjoy without all the elitist posturing. With that said, the "IMPROPER TRAX" begin!

Terrence Dixon - Minimalism Re:vision

We've made no secret of our love for Terrence Dixon here at THEMA. After his THEMA debut with 'The Parkhurst', a record that helped to reignite his career, we've seen the legendary figure move on to even bigger things, and we helped the cause even more just recently with his 'The Return' EP as Population One on our Chronicle sublabel. His resurgence has reminded us what always drew us and many others to his work from the beginning, and it's thus with immense pride that we announce Minimalism Re:Vision, featuring remixes of Terrence Dixon's groundbreaking Minimalism Part 1 from 1995. As the final release on Claude Young's influential but short-lived Utensil Records, the understated record is one of Dixon's first few releases as well as a certified classic of early Detroit minimal techno. Revising it is a tough task to tackle and one we approached with great care; thus, we present three equally relevant, equally reverent mixes by today's finest techno figures on a full EP. Mike Huckaby, Silent Servant, and DVS1 all stand shoulder-to-shoulder at the front line of contemporary dancefloor music, and we feel that presenting their versions alongside the original does justice and homage to its enduring legacy for THEMA's Re:Vision Series.

Mike Huckaby is no stranger to Terrence Dixon; seeing as they come from the same city, work in the same area, and are of the same generation. We have little doubt Huckaby has the Utensil EP somewhere in his record collection actually, and his studied interpretation certainly shows such deep roots. It takes the threatening aspect of Terrence's original into the background, but Huckaby replaces it with upfront, drum-machine fueled aggression and ruthlessly unleashes a proper Detroit beatdown underlain with woozy, loopy synthesizers. Working at a complete contrast but remaining equally true to the original's mold, Silent Servant zeroes in on the heavy, haunting atmosphere and damaged electronics and underpins his remix with a dirty, repeating bassline of his own invention. It's ominous and distinctly influenced by other aspects of Dixon's work, but it also asserts itself as one of Silent Servant's most arresting recent efforts. DVS1's nimble interpretation juxtaposes seemingly endless percussion fills against dub chords that formed the backbone of Dixon's 1995 track. There, they remained discrete and shadowy, but here the haze is drawn away as they interlock with the adroit drums. We can easily see DVS1 smashing this in one of his lightning-quick mixes, and afterwards we finish the record with Terrence Dixon's (A2) original, where the contrasting aspects of the other mixes meld kaleidoscopically into something that stands easily alongside the most creative of today's techno.

As a reunion for friends, an overview of today's best talent, and a re-evaluation of past and present achievements, THEMA looks back to the rich past while still moving unstoppably into the future.

Claude Young - Impolite To Refuse

ICAN 009 "Impolite to Refuse" by Claude Young remade and remixed by Santiago Salazar and Esteban Adame as ICAN.

Originally released in 1996, "Impolite to Refuse" immediately inspired the future members of ICAN. It had that Detroit Techno soul with latinized bass and percussion; even before Knights of The Jaguar, Claude Young's masterpiece had won us over. Also included on this release are two new versions of "Impolite to Refuse". Esteban Adame and Santiago Salazar did their homework to recreate the strings, bass and then added their own inspired twists for the ICAN Remake. Esteban Adame slows it down to 118 bpm for a latin funk jam on his Deep Mix. Ican is proud to re-introduce this classic to a new generation.
