Alanis Morissette defined the alternative female Pop sound in the '90s, with a string of hits under her belt from the million-seller albums Jagged Little Pill (1995) and Supposed Former Infatuation Junkie (1998). In 1999 she performed a selection of personal favourites live at MTV Unplugged, with an emphasis on the non-hit material from the Supposed album. Morissette wanted to prove she's more than 'just' the hits she produced, resulting in her daring step to not perform some of her contemporary hits including "Thank U" and "So Pure". MTV Unplugged shows a multi-faceted artist, fully grown into her own and strong as ever.

Original vinyl copies are extremely hard to find. To celebrate MTV Unplugged's reissue, we're pressing this record in a limited first edition of 1000 gold/red marbled copies (SOLD OUT. Available on black vinyl)

The English singer-songwriter Mika experienced his breakthrough with his first full-length studio album Life in Cartoon Motion. The album which sold over 8 million copies worldwide marks him as a talented and versatile artist. It builds upon the musical territory of artists like Freddie Mercury, Elton John and more recently The Scissor Sisters. The poppy album is full of energetic and danceable songs and shows Mika's musical identity. It's the identity of a rising star who created some of his best singles at an early stage. The single hits Grace Kelly' and Relax, Take It Easy' are examples of these clever pop songs, but also the more focused songs like the breakup track Stuck in the Middle' and rocker Ring Ring' shows his development. It makes Life in Cartoon Motion one of the top records of 2007.

After releasing his first EP Dodgy Holiday Mika brought himself on the radar of music critics. It can be seen as the start of the successful career of the classically educated musician. He sold over 10 million copies of all his albums and singles and is still active in the music industry.

The vinyl package includes an insert with song lyrics and credits.

ILL is a genre-defying band which believes in the power of disobedient noise. With a repertoire of precarious pop songs and frequent improvised departures, ILL revel in the right to be weird, exploring the borders between the funny and the sinister, the personal and the political, the mundane and the surreal.
Formed in Manchester in early 2012, the all-female post-punks ILL have released three EPs along with DIY artwork and music videos. Live performance highlights include A Disobedient Noise' - an improvised piece at Manchester Art Gallery, Supernormal Festival 2015, Sounds from the Other City (Salford), supporting riot-goths' Jack off Jill in Manchester, Raw Power Festival 2016, the Quietus Festival at WORM, Rotterdam in 2016 and the Great Escape 2017

Ever since the Belgian rock band Zita Swoon released their debut album Everyday I Wear a Greasy Black Feather on My Hat ( under the name Moondog jr.) they became known as a big name in the Belgian music Industry. With the third album Life = a Sexy Sanctuary they were growing bigger and changed their music to a more poppy approach. The melodrama voice of lead singer Stef Kamil Carlens creates the emotions for the melodic sounds. Some of the songs are created around their danceable disco tunes, like "Hot Hotter Hottest" and "The Bananaqueen". Pure beauty can be found in a song like "Moving through life as prey".

Even after 20 years Zita Swoon can still be seen as one of the strongest export products from the Belgium music scene. They released some successful albums during the years and are still active both in the studio as on stage.

Life = a Sexy Sanctuary is available as a limited edition of 750 individually numbered copies on white vinyl.

ist dieser Vergleich natürlich auch naheliegend.

Plush - Korp Sole Roller

Korp Sole Roller

12inchBEWITH031LP
Be With Records
24.04.2018

A wonderful companion piece to the totemic Fed, we proudly announce the first ever vinyl edition of Korp Sole Roller by Plush. Liam Hayes' magical fourth full-length LP was previously only available on a rare Japanese import CD. Produced and arranged in 2010 by Pat Sansone (Wilco / The Autumn Defense), it finally arrives in a limited edition of 500 copies.

The common impression of Plush is that of an underground rock myth, lent greater poignancy by the lofty vision that galvanised his music. Yet while he has long been a cult concern, clued-up celebrity fans periodically declare their profound love for Hayes' maverick genius. Indeed, after Jason Schwartzman introduced Plush to Roman Coppola, several stunning songs from Korp Sole Roller soundtracked Coppola's A Glimpse Inside The Mind Of Charles Swan III.

As ever with Plush, it's easy to imagine you are listening to a privately pressed rarity from the mid-late 1970s. Or one of the criminally neglected jewels from the discography of Jimmy Webb or Burt Bacharach. The sound on Korp Sole Roller does differ crucially from Fed, however. It is more streamlined. These 10 gorgeously seductive creations careen around ornate string and wind instrument arrangements and producer Sansone's deft work is likely the reason for this. Yet, brilliantly, it still possesses that sun-warped take on classic pop-rock, that Plush specialises in. That peculiar "down-lifting" phenomenon of performing upbeat songs in an enigmatically mournful way.

Upon completion, Korp Sole Roller barely received anything resembling a release. Press coverage was zero because none of the major magazines or blogs knew of its existence. His management at the time essentially buried the album in order to concentrate on other releases. Looking back on this decision, it really made little sense. Everyone involved in its creation of these near-perfect gems is extremely proud of it. Liam himself has described it as the favourite of his albums. Pat's delicate work is astounding. Remastered especially for this special limited edition, it is presented in a sumptuous gatefold jacket with high-end art photography throughout, including full colour inner sleeves. Finally, here's your chance to own a slice of kaleidoscopic pop history.

It rocketed to the top of the UK Charts, spawning two No.1 hit records, his first as a solo artist, 'Forever Love' and 'Love Won't Wait'. Now, 21 years on, the completely re-mastered album is being released to celebrate its 21st anniversary with previously unreleased demo versions and live sessions of some of his biggest solo hits.. Released on 13th April 2018, Open Road will also be available for the first time ever on vinyl.

With an enviable career spanning three decades, Gary is one of Britain's most successful singer-songwriters, having written 14 Number One singles as well as being a six-time recipient of an Ivor Novello Award. Aside from his achievements with Take That, he has also co-written and produced music for other renowned artists including Dame Shirley Bassey, Sir Elton John and Robbie Williams.

Gary's last solo record 'Since I Saw You Last' sold more than 700,000 copies and was the ninth biggest selling album that year. In more recent years, Gary has also turned his attention to the world of theatre, composing the score for the hugely successful production 'Finding Neverland', working alongside screenwriter Tim Firth to write the music and lyrics for musical 'The Girls' and also working alongside his Take That band mates to produce 'The Band' a record breaking musical featuring the music of Take That.

Hearts Hearts - Goods / Gods

Hearts Hearts

Goods / Gods

12inchTOM152LP
Tomlab
20.04.2018

It was on the 1st January 2016, during the release of their debut album, Young. Independently of each other, Peter Paul Aufreiter and Johannes Mandorfer sent sound snippets over to Hearts Hearts' singer David Österle. Within the same hour, he'd received an aggressive jazzy piano loop—'Phantom'—and an electronic drum take recorded overseas in 'Island' (the German word for the country of Iceland). Österle frantically began attempting to put these disparate pieces together, to synchronize what was never meant to be unified, and start singing over the results.

Though genre-wise no match at all, the fragments didn't only end up as 'Phantom / Island' — the breathtaking opener to Hearts Hearts' sophomore album Goods / Gods — but the unusual process itself became the aesthetic basis for the entire record. The band's widened approach to disparate musical genres became the key element in the creation of eleven new songs. Hearts Hearts have cracked and evolved their electronic ballads and downbeat pop into something far more sonically expansive and emotionally soulful, driven by higher energy and a growing array of influences.

The chance meetings of unrelated options that inspired the writing and recording process is present throughout the titles of Goods / Gods. The record takes its inspiration from those in between spaces and undefined borderlines in meaning, symbolised by the slash in every title on the album. Hearts Hearts explore emotional and moral ambiguities on Goods / Gods, taking aim at the ineffectiveness of the dichotomies and borderlines that define modern society in the process, preferring to think in options' as Hämmerle puts it. The group sees the diagonal line of the slash symbol as representing an openness and flexibility in meaning, in similarity as much as difference.

Produced by mastermind Peter Paul Aufreiter, the new record conjures a mix of anguish and ecstasy, whether it's the funky falsetto of 'Sugar / Money', or digital monster ballad 'Do you often think about /'. Taking inspiration from the leftfield pop productions of Bon Iver, Jamie XX, and Son Lux, they skew addictive hooks into drippy song chambers, littering them with lucid samples and cybernetic production licks, conjoining contrasting elements with prisms of electronics and lush acoustic instrumentation.

Lead single 'Phantom / Island' and instant motorik pop classic 'Goods / Gods' '' are the most addictive and high-energy tracks yet from the quartet, blending groovier verses with increasingly majestic choruses. This is ultra-intelligent pop from a band that have found their true voice. Somewhere between happiness and sadness, energy and lethargy, electronica and rock - that's where you'll find Hearts Hearts.

John Moods - The Essential John Moods

Alone in the world, we find ourselves. Inside ourselves, we find something to share with the world.

The Essential John Moods, a solo album in all senses of the word, is what Jonathan Jarzyna of Fenster found in himself during a summer spent hiking along the Iberian coast, and he now wants to share it with you. A mini-guitar on his back and a copy of GarageBand on his phone allowed Jarzyna to record songs each evening as he arrived in a new town after a long day traveling by foot. (He did, admittedly, add live drum tracks and some additional instrumentation back in Berlin.) The album preserves this peripatetic feeling, each song relating to the next as one city or village relates to its neighbor, its unique situation contrasting with the shared architectural vernacular. Blipping instrumental interludes ( Trainride,' Pontevedra,' Coastal Way') even capture the disordered, delirious feeling of transit hubs and the sleep-bleared mystery of waking on an unfamiliar road.

I just came alive completely' are the first words Jarzyna murmurs on New Spring,' invoking the spirit of the album. He speaks not of the liveliness of manic activity, but the heightened, tender sensitivity of presence. It's a fullness of living captured by the transition from the lush, jangling groove of The Weight' to the spacious contemplation of Pawns.' The dreamy echo of the 60s' and 70s' soft rock and folk troubadours suffuses the album, and the organ-soaked Where In The World' even has a psychedelic tinge. But the overall effect is quite contemporary, from the back-of-the-nightbus lounge funk of Take It Home' (featuring an amazing turn from arch-crooner Sean Nicholas Savage) to the mournful cupboard jazz of Almost Gone.' Dark Wall' sounds like a honkytonk ramble alongside a robot tentatively learning to play lap steel. Leap of Love,' an early album highlight, passes over the listener in shimmering waves, a love song which remains a mystery even to its creator.

In the meditation tape coda Relax Your Foot,' Jarzyna selects the perfect sample to encapsulate The Essential John Moods' hopeful receptivity: the late Professor Carl Sagan reminding us that despite our limitations and fallibilities, we humans are capable of greatness.'

Bonny Doon - Longwave

Bonny Doon

Longwave

12inchWOODSIST093
Woodsist
23.03.2018

Arriving in the early months of 2017, Bonny Doon's self-titled debut was a warm introduction to the band for many. Hazy and bright, the album's woozy melodies and swirling webs of summery guitar textures were easily ingested as low-key slacker pop. But the nonchalant breeziness belied a serious attention to songcraft, and hinted at depths yet unexplored. Lo and behold, before the ink was even dry on the first record, work had already begun on its follow-up Longwave, a conscious about-face from the sonic experimentation of the first album, and a journey inward. In the spring of 2016 the band decamped to a remote part of Michigan, nesting near the evocatively named Mystic Lake, and spent a week uprooting former approaches and reinventing their sound anew. Moving into more improvisational territory, they wrote quickly and from the hip, using repetitive chord structures to aid in spontaneous generation. Attracted to the session's spacious arrangements and unaffected sounds, they immediately went into the studio to capture the material. Working for the first time outside of home recording settings with engineer Bill Skibbe and longtime friend and collaborator Shelley Salant, the experience allowed for a focused concentration on bringing the intrinsic spirit of the group to the surface.

Opting for spontaneity and simplicity over the exploration of layers and textures that defined the first record, the band architected an incredibly intimate sound for these new songs. The album was tracked with minimal overdubs or production flourishes, constructing a frame that is spare and understated in the same way as the twilight-tinted third Velvet Underground album or the rusty glow of Bill Fay's Time Of Last Persecution. These sessions aimed to capture the band at their essence. With the superfluous stripped away, a gentle but steadfast spiritual core is revealed as the backbone of Bonny Doon's cosmic American music.

Unlike previous releases by 1958 Baker's voice had reached a stunning maturity and his trumpet playing is also at a near peak in quality. The song selection is impeccable and everything about this record just oozes coolness. One of the finest releases in Chet Baker's storied career.

The National Jazz Trio Of Scotland - Standards Vol. IV

"It's kind of a double bluff calling it the National Jazz Trio Of Scotland," says Bill Wells of a group that is famously neither a jazz band or a trio. "I was trying to be kind of perverse about it, calling it jazz and then deliberately not having anything that actually related to jazz." On their latest album, Standards Vol. IV, the National Jazz Trio continue their engagement with classic and outsider pop traditions, subtly building on their characteristic blend of beguiling melodies and spare arrangements. There is even, dare we say it, a hint of jazz. "For this record, I've opened it out," explains Wells. "There are drums on it, which I haven't really had before, even though they're sampled drums, and there are bits of improvisation like with the viola on 'Passing By' and 'A Quiet Life'. That's the first time there's ever been anything resembling improvisation on a National Jazz Trio album. I wanted something in there that was improvised and quite out there, very out there as it happened." That latter track also features a sampled irruption of big band jazz, as if Wells is transmitting live from a New Orleans second line, Dictaphone in hand.

These oblique visions of jazz aside, the album's most striking development is its focus on a single lead vocalist in Kate Sudgen. This is the first in a proposed series of albums to feature one singer from the NJTOS, with Gerard Black and Aby Vulliamy to follow. Wells is full of praise for Sudgen's beautifully unaffected voice. "It's just a case of her being a brilliant singer. I feel that she's underrated. She's as good as people like Liz Fraser. It's almost like her voice sounds like it's double tracked without it being double tracked, like Gerry Rafferty or Robert Wyatt. There's a graininess to it."

As Wells notes, Sudgen does not have a conventionally powerful voice, but her understated approach has a real emotional pull. "I suppose I like things to be very plain. I do like people who can hit notes, but I can't stand most jazz singers because they over-sing. I think sometimes the more emotional you are, the less emotion you convey. With Kate, it's very deliberate, it's all very considered, and in a way people like that are the best jazz singers. It might sound quite casual, but there's a lot of thought behind it."

This decade has seen a flurry activity from Wells. In 2012, he won the inaugural Scottish Album Of The Year award for Everything's Getting Older, a collaboration with Arab Strap's Aidan Moffat. In 2011 he released Lemondale, recorded with Japan-based musicians including Jim O'Rourke and Saya of Tenniscoats. Four years later, he assembled a stellar cast of musicians including Annette Peacock and Yo La Tengo for Nursery Rhymes, an exploration of the darker side of childrens' songs.

Wells' penchant for détournement and bittersweet irony crops up throughout Standards Vol. IV. Take "Tinnitus Lullaby", where Sudgen softly sings of "a never ending ringing" to "save your soul from sleep" over the melancholy twinkling of a music box like synth. The song is accompanied by an animated video from artist and singer-songwriter Marry Waterson, which for Wells recalls the DIY weirdness of 1970s British childrens' television. "She's got quite a dark sense of humour," says Wells. "I actually laughed out loud when I saw it because it so captured the mood. She's just one of these people who's so supremely talented."

'Anticipated Sentence' makes a wry reference to the Sinatra standard 'I've Got The World On A String', a song Wells dislikes intensely. "It's by Harold Arlen (and Ted Kohler) who is one of the great songwriters, but it's this relentlessly happy thing and I just think 'Shut up!'" As Wells explains, some of his greatest influences are things he hates. "I think a lot of people are the same, you know, 'that annoys me so much I have to react.' I quite like the idea of taking the piss out of it in a relatively subtle way." In Wells' song Kohler's cheerful refrain of "What a world, what a life!" is twisted into something altogether darker, with the string around the protagonist's finger becoming a noose around their neck.

Such juxtapositions can also serve to bring light to darkness. 'Move' is a vivid portrait of depression, where the protagonist spends all day in bed, listening to the sounds of helicopters buzzing overhead. Yet Wells animates the song with bossa nova guitar and clave rhythms, creating an effect that is, depending how you read it, ironic or uplifting. "It appears as a bit of a joke, but in fact it's what actually made the song work for me, because I'd been working on it for a while and I couldn't quite get the chorus to come out. And then I realised that if I put that kind of Latin rhythm on it, which is obviously in complete contradiction to the lyric, it actually made it work."

In addition to the ten Wells originals and a new version of the Aidan Moffat collaboration 'Far From You', Standards Vol. IV features a cover of Richard Youngs' 'Summer "Summer's Edge" from the latters's 2005 masterpiece Summer Wanderer. Wells has known Youngs since the 1990s, when they worked together with Future Pilot AKA. "There's a few people for whom you can justifiably use the word genius and I think Richard is one," he declares. "Again it was to do with Kate's voice and that song suited her voice so well. It's actually quite a radical reinterpretation. The original is a capella, so it gave me that space in which I could do something that was very much my own." The National Jazz Trio's version taps into the uncanny pastoralism of the original, with Sudgen's clear reading of the melody set against Wells' glistening keyboard samples. "It's one of my signature sounds," Wells adds. It comes from a sample library he and Vulliamy recorded with Teenage Fanclub's Norman Blake a few years ago. "They're all natural sounds, but they've been mutated. We've been using them on all the albums. I want something to sound like it's my own, so that's as close to making my own instrument as I can get. I like the fact that even though it's on a computer it's not going to be too precise." That human quality shines through Standards Vol. IV, an album characterised by its gorgeous blend of sophistication and vulnerability.

Charles Aznavour started his singing career in the late forties after Édith Piaf heard him sing and arranged to have him accompany her on tour in France and the United States. Following the tour, Aznavour opened for Piaf at the Moulin Rouge in Paris. By then he was already often referred to as France's Frank Sinatra.
This LP release combines his first complete album sung in English, 1962's The Time Is Now' (tracks 1-12), with six of his debut English language songs, which appeared on Believe in Me' in 1958. Aznavour has recorded over 1200 songs in eight different languages. He has also been a prolific songwriter, with over 800 compositions to his name.

Cliff Richard - 21 Today & Listen To Cliff!

In the late fifties the U.S. had Elvis, Buddy Holly, and Little Richard: they had rock 'n' roll! Cliff Richard was the U.K.'s answer to these U.S. rock idols.

This 2LP set presents the British singer's fourth and fifth albums. 21 Today', released in 1961 on Richard's 21st birthday, features him with backing by the Shadows tackling rock 'n' roll covers and well-known standards. It was Richard's first album to reach no. 1 on the UK charts. Its predecessor, Listen To Cliff', also from 1961, features mainly pop standards and such covers as Ray Charles's What'd I Say' and the big Righteous Brothers hit Unchained Melody'. Among the eight bonus tracks are Richard's hit singles Bachelor Boy', I'm Lookin' Out The Window', Do You Want To Dance',and one of his best known tracks, The Young Ones'.

These albums and singles helped launch Cliff Richard into the pop stratosphere. His career has proven to have remarkable staying power, with over 14 no. 1 hit U.K. singles, sales of over 250 million records worldwide, and 21 million singles in the U.K., to his credit. He is the third-top-selling artist in U.K. singles chart history, behind only the Beatles and Elvis Presley.

"The dazzling symphonic album he always threatened to produce" UNCUT 5/5
"A soulful symphonic masterpiece" ROLLING STONE

Originally released in Japan only on CD in 2002, Plush's Fed lives up to the cult-like adulation it has garnered ever since. A stunning symphony of Bacharach-inspired pop, Toussaint-swing andMelody Nelson-era-Gainsbourg, it's an album bound together by Liam Hayes' maverick genius, an uncompromising Brian Wilson-esque quest for sonic perfection. Positively indulgent in every way, this sumptuous record has long deserved to be treated to a deluxe vinyl edition. Lovingly overseen by Hayes and recent collaborator Pat Sansone (Wilco/The Autumn Defense), it will finally be available on the format it should've always been, this Record Store Day 2018. Remastered and presented as a double LP - cut specially at 45rpm - it comes housed in a beautiful gatefold jacket with expanded artwork throughout.

Its expansive, singular vision infamously took years to realise, involving Earth Wind & Fire's horn arranger (the legendary Tom Tom MMLXXXIV) amongst other elite personnel. Recorded with five different engineers (including Steve Albini and John McEntire), Hayes meticulously extracted every ounce of pop from each note. A long list of renowned studio ringers (including soul drummer Morris Jennings) and Chicago regulars (McEntire, Rizzo, Parker) among many others provide playing of demonstrably professional precision. As such, Hayes' complex, meandering melodies are rendered far more coherent and satisfying than they otherwise might have appeared, bringing his epic, anguished pop to a rarely seen level of perfection and depth. This unstinting dedication to the overarching vision was rewarded handsomely - artistically, at least.

However, as might have been expected, his deluxe approach resulted in a bill too steep for any American or European label to ultimately support. It has since seemed unlikely that it would see the light of day on either side of the Atlantic. Yet we were determined not to allow Hayes' lifetime achievement to go unnoticed or let music fans across the world miss out on one of the finest albums of this century.

A wide-eyed opus of stunning intensity, Fed oozes Hayes' impeccable influences without ever becoming overwhelmed by them. Incredibly, it touches upon Blaxploitation soul, Boz Scaggs-soft-rock, hints of jazz and blues, timeless baroque and skewed pop. In one long minute, the stabbing, soulful "So Blind" moves through five different melodic segments, horns shift easily from haunting backdrop to explosive forefront, smoothly giving way to strings as Hayes' voice casts its bewitching spell. The ambitious soul of "Having It All" has been described as the diffident cousin of Marvin Gaye's "Save The Children" whilst the breezy "Greyhound Bus Station" is pure 70s AM Gold, evoking the easy warmth of Jimmy Webb's beloved Land's End period. The sublime resignation of "No Education", a beautifully slow number that begins, "Never read a book in my life/ But I feel just fine" is post-rock ballad heaven. Arriving towards the end, the title track arrives as a majestic suite, moving from a horn-and-guitar-led instrumental via shifting melodies to Hayes' compelling vocal bursts.

An album of such brilliance, Fed can comfortably sit alongside such staggering statement pieces as David Bowie's Young Americans, Randy Newman's 12 Songs or Harry Nilsson's Nilsson Schmilsson. Indeed, for all the sprawling elements that went in - lengthy guitar builds, exploding horn sections, solemn strings, female backup chorus - it is a deeply personal and original record. Employing a distinct "more is more" aesthetic, he demonstrates remarkable restraint in producing an album of such intimacy. "My creation has drowned me," he memorably sings on languid opener "Whose Blues", yet he navigates the shifting styles and ideas with enviable ease.

Using cello, vocals, orchestral arrangements, choral ensembles, location samples, synths and piano Abi Wade explores human nature through real and abstracted personas on her debut album 'Beautifully Astray'

Abi wrote most of the tracks on the album on cello initially in various locations of her old hometown of Brighton, from the living room of her seafront apartment to the dark belly of Sticky Mike's Frog Bar. The cello is so versatile, and I love to explore those many characteristics using various techniques both traditional and unique, it's such an emotive instrument and has a very human tone.'

From this starting point, Abi set out on a sonic exploration, getting field recordings in locations as diverse as a printworks, a tap dancing club and following a chance meeting there, a fishing boat: After the tap dancing class I was explaining to the gentlemen who ran it how I was trying to get onto a boat to record some sounds and by pure coincidence it turned out he was a fisherman, I did not expect a tap dancing fisherman! It was truly an amazing experience to go out first thing on to the water and share a moment of time with such an interesting character.'

Following a move to Camden, London, the tracks were fleshed out with orchestral arrangements and were recorded in Jay Malhotra and Sam Duckworth's Amazing Grace studio in Hoxton. These sessions included brass, wind and choral ensembles.

Abi then worked with 'the patron saints of print' Eley Kishimoto to create the visuals for the album matching the story of each print and pattern to the story of each song. Their patterns are featured on both the album and single artwork and has been a source of inspiration throughout the making of the album.

'Beautifully Astray' was recorded with support from Help Musician's Emerging Excellence award, and the release with support from PRS for Music Foundation's Women Make Music.
