Benoit Pioulard - The Benoit Pioulard Listening Matter

The Benoît Pioulard Listening Matter is the sixth kranky album from Thomas Meluch under the nom de plume Benoît Pioulard. It arrives on the 10th anniversary of his first LP Précis, and offers a rekindled focus on self-examination, as well as a return to vocal-based pop structures following the mostly instrumental Sonnet (2015).

Recording for the Listening Matter began during a period of grief, turmoil and self-medication, and continued throughout two years of growth and healing. Reflections on vice ("Layette", "Anchor as the muse"), virtue ("Narcologue") and death ("A mantle for Charon") feature equally in this concise treatise aimed at the flawed-but-resilient core in us all.

By coincidence this album was completed on the very day Meluch's only brother died; accordingly, it's dedicated to him and anyone seeking paths away from their demons.

Erick Cosaque - Kaloukera Percussions Ep

Rootsy, body-rocking Gwo Ka rhythms with dashes of drum machines and electronics, from 1988-93. Dancefloor mayhem.
During this period, the 808, 909 and co were permeating music-making world-wide. From pulsating Chicago house and rough Detroit techno, to the dancehalls of Kingston and the shebeens of Kinshasa, every place and every scene reacted to the new technology in a different way.
The French Caribbean was no exception. Long the bedrock of Zouk, it was fertile ground for the new equipment and fresh sounds.Kaloukera Percussions celebrates the music of celebrated Guadeloupean singer and percussionist Erick Cosaque. Staunch activist in the name of the music, language and culture of Guadeloupe, his musical career spans five decades.

Amazing sessions by the cream of underground French prog and psych bands, first released in 1971 on Thélème, a boutique label owned by Magma bassist and Barclay Records manager Laurent Thibault. When Thibault founded Thélème, he wanted to set up a prestige outfit. He had this in mind when he set out to fulfill his ambition of presenting a panorama of the French rock scene by gathering the best groups in France together on one double-album, to be recorded at the legendary Chateau d'Hérouville studio, live in the courtyard with no overdubs. Thibault had hoped that labels would allow their best acts to appear. Philips offered Magma (the version of 'Mekanik Kommando' appearing on Puissance is the first ever conceived or recorded by the band) and Catherine Ribeiro, Barclay allowed Alain Markusfeld to participate, Le Chant du Monde let Voyage appear. The band Catharsis said yes, so did Contrepoint, discovered by Magma's René Garber. Thélème artists included Ergo Sum, MOR, Zabu, and Solitude. Two guests from America were recommended by Le Chant du Monde: folk-singers Roger Mason and Steve Waring. And happily Spectre, a band featuring legendary Hérouville engineer Dominique Blanc-Francart, brought the monster prog jazz funk synth madness of 'Arkham'. Brilliant!

Momus - Scobberlotchers

Scobberlotchers - recorded by Momus in Osaka immediately after Britain's shock referendum decision to leave the European Union - is the first post-Brexit album, and certainly won't be the last (although it may turn out to be the best). "Post-Brexit" is a music sub-genre which shares certain features with the more personal, more familiar post-breakup album: both are driven by cataclysmic splits, ire and belly-fire, recriminations, insults, and at least four out of the five stages of the famous Kübler-Ross model of bereavement-grief: denial, anger, bargaining, depression and acceptance. Momus - a European to the core, despite his move to Japan - responded first to the Brexit vote with a string of Captain Haddock-like insults. As the songwriting evolved, Brexit took its place in a larger and more disturbing pattern, confirmed by a coup in Turkey and Trump's successes on the American election trail: an uptick in populist isolationism, the sudden apparent acceptability of overt racism, and increasing acts of terrorist violence or random hatred. Extrapolated, these developments pose the threat of a looming neo-imperial order with its own sinister "year zero". But Scobberlotchers isn't all menace: jubilant songs like Heian and Perlenschwein remind us that even in the darkest, most "interesting" times there are solid consolations in the form of love and art. And Momus' continuing use of Japanese folk music (mixed here with dissonant snatches of 20th century avant-garde classical music as well as straighforward pop) reminds us that although the West may be entering a bloody decline, Asia remains serene and optimistic.

Jm Airis - Wild Birds

Jm Airis

Wild Birds

2x12inchTGNP043LP 2X12"
Totally Gross National Product
02.06.2015

Below the hustle and bustle of New York City's streets, lies 'Terminal NY', the bunker-come-recording studio of Wisconsin journeyman-songwriter JM Airis. It's where Wild Birds was conceived - Airis' striking new noir-folk album that's all set to soar from the grit of the Brooklyn basement and circle the Empire State Building, bringing a moment of calm to the pulsing heartbeat of the big city.

Airis covers a lot of territory with this album, from the swaggering to the solemn as he delves into the darker side of Americana music. Filled with heavy emotions and heart felt lyrics, Wild Birds pushes the prominence of airy spaces, synth notes, and the relegation of guitars to a supporting role pushing this recording to the edge of folk noir, if it's even definable.
From structure to sound, Airis is deliberate in his creation of making even the least audible punctuations perfect. Every single chime, raw rhythm, and acoustic string reverberation is exactly as Airis intended it to be, all while not being over produced.
All together, Wild Birds is a bare-eyed view from above, a finished mirror of the simplicity distance provides and a back-to-the-land reminder that not everyone in the city is singing songs about the hustle.

Nelda Pina Y La Boa - Giumbele

Massive 11-piece Latin American Afrobeat combo Nelda Piña y La Boa have been exploring the vast rhythms of West African music and its many branches within their home base country of Colombia for the last 3 years. Influenced by the contrasting sounds and traditions of Colombia's disparate Atlantic & Pacific coast cultures, they bring a unique twist to the familiar Afrobeat lineup that is accentuated by their cantadora Nelda Piña, a singer from the Bolivar region who was born in the 1940s. Once again, Colombia and its deep reservoir of modern and traditional musicians prove the awesome alchemy of melding the sounds and aesthetics of old and young generations.

This special release on the Names You Can Trust label takes that concept one step further as the single track on hand, Giumbele, sees Nelda hand off the lead vocals to Cali-native Nidia Gongora, a renowned singer in the worldwide Tropical music community whose hypnotic voice has already been heard on numerous records in collaboration with producer Quantic. Led by the glide of Nidia's lush lead, the result of this tune is a mid-tempo stunner that combines the airy timbres of the marimba de chonta with the powerful backdrop of the mighty brass section. In true NYCT fashion, the exclusive B-Side Instrumental mix proves a useful and unique rendition of the tune that goes deeper into a slow-motion, dark Cosmic Tropical motif, perfect for the selectors and the late-night dancers alike.

Shigeo Tanaka - Yumi-kagura

'Deep session! It is rare to hear folk music from Japan in such beautiful fidelity and incredible dynamics. This recording is intensely gorgeous and hauntingly disarming. This should open up a whole new world of adventurous listening for folks outside (and inside!) Japan.'Brian Shimkovitz (Awesome Tapes From Africa)

'Sounds absolutely great! Super interesting and engaging.'Ben UFO

'Just Give Me That Old Time Religion, It's Good Enough For Me.'Japan Blues

A hotline to the gods! Kagura is a thousand-year-old form of Japanese Shinto sacred music and dance, accompanying the chanting of myths; the word "kagura" can be translated as "god-entertainment". Passed down over countless generations, the music is rare and recordings even rarer. Shigeo Tanaka was a master of the yumi (bow), an uncommon single-string percussion instrument, which is a true bow: arrows are fired off at the end of each ceremony to fend off evil sprits. The instrument is difficult to play; it's hard to draw out the proper sound and maintain the rhythm.
Yumi kagura is the oldest of all the various forms of kagura. The Tanaka family, based in rural Joge-cho, Hiroshima prefecture, has passed down this yumi kagura tradition for hundreds of years; this lineage continues to this day in the person of his daughter Ritsuko Tanaka. The Joge-cho yumi kagura, which prays for family well-being, bountiful crops and good fortune, was designated an Important Intangible Cultural Property in 1971. The piece featured here, "Takusa saimon", based on the myth "Ama no iwato" (The Rocky Celestial Cave), is mesmeric, reaching back across ages to the time before time, with Tanaka's voice and yumi, accompanied by flute and metal percussion, drawing us closer to the primal activities of the gods. Listeners may find affinities with aspects of musics as diverse as German electronic minimalism like E2-E4, certain Ethiopian music, "spiritual jazz" and more, all tapping into the deep root of forever. Previously available only on a ridiculously obscure 1990 cassette release, Yumi kagura is the first collaborative release by EM Records and Riyo Mountains, a Japanese folk song research team. Available on LP and CD, with the CD featuring a bonus track: "Inagahachiman jinja yumi kagura hono" recorded in 2016 by Tanaka's daughter and successor Ritsuko Tanaka.

A revered figure in his native Isan region, and indeed throughout Thailand, Doi Inthanon is a legendary producer, composer, visionary and talent-spotter, a man who combines business acumen with an unerring ability to both predict and engender new directions in Thai popular music. Fittingly naming himself after the tallest mountain in the nation, he has towered over Thai music since the early 70s, and is still active today. This compilation, the first "various artists" collection in the EM Records + Soi 48 Thai music series, is an avalanche of Doi Inthanon productions, big hits and rare treasures spanning the early 70s to the mid-80s. The songs here cover a range of genres, comprising luk thung isan, Thai funk, and molam, including examples of "lam phaen", one of several styles created by the producer himself. Doi Inthanon is highly regarded as a developer of singers, and this compilation has no shortage of greats: national icons Angkanang Khunchai and Po Chalatnoi Songsoem, second-generation molam idols such as Onuma Singsiri and Hongthong Dao-udon, soul sister No. 1 Khwanta Fasawang, and 80s-90s Isan star Thongmai Mali.
Doi Inthanon is a key figure in Isan pop music, and this essential collection conveniently gathers hard-to-find tracks which have been issued on various labels in Thailand, including Double Rabbits, Apple, Uea Aree and his own private label. Available now on vinyl and CD, with most of the tracks on the CD version making their appearance in that format.

October sees the return of acclaimed Cardiff singer-songwriter and folk musician Gareth Bonello, also known as The Gentle Good. A collaborator of a great many beloved artists, including Cate Le Bon, Richard James (Gorky's Zygotic Mynci) and Welsh Music Prize winner Georgia Ruth, Bonello's fourth album Ruins/Adfeilion is one that's title alone serves best to reflect the disparate themes within. Although not represented by a single concept, the songs have common themes of history, identity and social commentary. The title refers to a realisation that there is no true freedom to make the world as we would choose, but instead have to live amongst the ruins of previous generations. Some of these ruins are beautiful links to our past, providing a sense of place and cultural identity for instance, whilst others are dangerous obstacles that hinder our progress.

As the follow-up to 2013's Y Bardd Anfarwol (The Immortal Bard) - an ambitious intercontinental project during which Bonello travelled to Chengdu, China, to create a project combining both Welsh and Chinese traditions - Ruins/Adfeilion looks much closer to home, but with no lesser global outlook. Gwen Lliw'r Lili (Gwen colour of the Lilly) is a fitting album opener - being a traditional Welsh folk song from the Maria Jane Williams Collection, Ancient National Airs of Gwent and Morgannwg (1844) - and an outward statement on the influence that the continuing influence of Welsh folk music on his writing. The guitar instrumental Un i Sain Ffagan (One for Saint Fagans), for instance, is Bonello's own ode to his former place of employment, Saint Fagans Natural History Museum, and the spot where he himself first discovered traditional Welsh music.

Many of the songs featured here pay tribute to the past whilst others address, in very direct terms, contemporary issues.

There's a particular twinkle in the great expanse of American songwriting. This has seen countless nostalgic exploitations over the years - collections of popular songs strung together under the banner of the so-called Great American Songbook that have reiterated the form of many of these songs without contemplating their depths.

In terms of thoughtful, emotive synthesis, few have understood it in the way that Cara and Mike Gangloff understand it on this new album. They take have taken older American songs, popular songs that we've come to understand as standards, and stretched them out into the rolling hills and vast expanses that gave birth to the nation's earliest music.

American history is a history of tension. A group of aristocrats saw fit to bestow a limited degree of freedom upon the underclasses. They called this democracy, coopting a concept that terrified them in the hopes that the implications of its meaning might placate the unwashed masses. Within that sliver of freedom, incredible heights were reached. Blues. Jazz. Mountain music. And on and on.

The songs on this record are recognizable. They're classics. And yet here they play out in ways the songwriters could never have predicted. Cara and Mike Gangloff have married the colloquial with the eternal.

With certain songs, like Sentimental Journey,' they lift the material out of its saccharine setting and into the troubling and sublime nation from which it springs. All of Me' is rendered utterly psychotic, teasing apart the song's desperate, masochistic, violent implications. The songs become essays about themselves, investigations into their own histories of terror and escape. Mood Indigo' becomes a haunting dirge. Cry Me a River' is a rhythmically jarring lightning rod of unease. The inventiveness of interpretation is spirit-raising.

The cultural history of the country is one of cosmic entertainment in the face of excruciating injustice. Transcendence has always been necessary. For better or worse, the United States of America is a nation defined by expanse. The negative aspects hardly need be mentioned, but there's a flipside, a cosmic expanse worth not only celebrating, but exploring further. An expanse that brings honor to the term.

The drone exists in music as an attempt for humanity to somehow meld with the temporal. It reduces music to its most basic elements while lifting it out of itself. An area for contemplation, reflection. An opportunity to exist in space. A friendly reminder that life might possess something resembling a core.

Cara and Mike Gangloff don't so much reimagine old American music as infuse it with the life it's always had. A life always just below the surface and a life far beyond the stars.

'More Early Pakistani Dance Music From Original 7" Vinyl 1965-1978' - The music on this compilation is quite different from the filmy music that was featured on the Karachi airwaves at the time. Bands like The Bugs, The Thunders, The Fore Thoughts, The Panthers, The Drifters, Incrowd, The Talisman, etc. played at parties, local hotels, dancehalls or wherever they were invited. They made the hip crowds take the dancefloor and move to the groove. Those were exciting days like we may never see them again.

Tricca/mcniff - Southern Star

Tricca/Mcniff

Southern Star

12inchEDDA43LP
Dell’Orso
26.08.2016
  • 1: ) Southern Star
  • 2: ) Middletown
  • 3: ) New York
  • 4: ) Hills Of Rome
  • 5: ) Southbound Train
  • 6: ) Paris Rain

Emma Tricca and Jason McNiff first met each other a number of years ago in the 12 Bar Club, a venue that they both played at and frequented looking for like minded souls. Brought together by their mutual appreciation of Bert Jansch and John Renbourn, (Jason knew Bert and Emma knew John) they forged a friendship and made plans to one day record together.

Their solo careers blossomed, Tricca "carving folk's new golden era" with her two delicate records for Finders Keepers and McNiff releasing six albums of highly regarded singer/songwriter material.

But the roots run deep with Tricca McNiff, and the friendship and intention remained, finally to be realised in the summer of 2015. Fortune found them with time on their hands and after a summer of rehearsal in a farm house in rural Italy and engineer/producer Tommaso Colliva of Calibro 35 suddenly free from duties with Muse, they got to fulfil this career long ambition and "SOUTHERN STAR" was born.  Consisting of six songs, three each, the mini album will be released on Dell'orso Records on 26th August.

The songs feature the pair duetting on each others material, and highlight a yearning for travel and the emotions that are stirred by distant shores. The only kids in town who were listening to Bert and John and finger-picking on their guitars in those distant days of the 12 Bar deliver a consummate and engrossing listening experience where one travels with them on a southbound train, taking in stops in New York, the Hills of Rome and Paris in rain, the long way. As the lead track, New York is given added poignancy what with Emma's new material (due in 2017) being currently mixed with Jason Victor, Pete Galub and Steve Shelley in the Big Apple resulting in Emma spending most of this year on trans-Atlantic flights.

As Tricca sings on McNiff's song, Hills of Rome, 'I come down on my bike to the market place, got petrol in my blood and wind in my face, my God I seem to be winning this race, got no one to chase to now...'

  • B1: Hope I Die
  • B2: I've Been Oer This Before - Featuring The Secret Sisters
  • B3: The Martyr
  • B4: Hate The Way You Love Me
  • B5: I'll Get Even

John Paul White was formerly one-half of Grammy Award winning duo The Civil Wars. His first solo album in nearly a decade, 'Beulah' is a remarkably & assuredly diverse collection spanning plaintive folk balladry, swampy southern rock, lonesome campfire songs, & dark acoustic pop. Gothic & ambitious, with a rustic, lived-in sound, it's a meditation on love curdling into its opposite, on recrimination defining relationships, on hope finally filtering through doubt.
White threw himself into the project, no longer the reluctant songwriter but a craftsman determined to make the best album possible. He cut several songs at the renowned FAME Studios in Muscle Shoals. One product of those sessions is 'What's So,' which introduces itself by way of a fire-&-brimstone riff, as heavy as a guilty conscience with gritty & soulful vocals. At the other end of the spectrum is 'The Martyr,' the spryness of the melody imagines Elliott Smith wandering the banks of the Tennessee River, yet the song is shot through with a pervasive melancholy as White wrestles with his own demons
Some of the quieter songs were created in the Single Lock offices/studio, including the ominously erotic opener 'Black Leaf' & the Southern gothic love song 'Make You Cry.' As he worked, a distinctive & intriguing aesthetic began to grow clearer & clearer, one based in austere arrangements & plaintive moods. These are songs with empty spaces in them, dark corners that could hold ghosts or worse.

The Shaggs - Philosophy Of The World

* Liner notes by legendary musician, writer and compiler, Lenny Kaye (Patti Smith, Nuggets)
* Book features unseen photos and ephemera.
* Artwork restored and expanded to a gatefold jacket.
* Newly remastered.
* #5 on Kurt Cobain's top 50 favorite albums.

In 1968, three sisters from Fremont, New Hampshire strapped on their instruments and declared themselves The Shaggs. At that moment begun a peculiar tale that would last far beyond the group's five-year run. Dot, Betty and Helen (and occasionally Rachel, the fourth sister) played in the group on the insistence of their father, Austin Wiggin Jr., who was convinced they were going to be big. Years earlier, Austin's mother gave him a palm reading, predicting that her son would marry a strawberry blonde woman, that he would have two sons after his mother died, and that his daughters would form a popular music outfit. The first two became reality, so Austin was certain the third would follow suit.

With pure confidence and his mother's bold prediction, Austin decided that his daughters would forgo attending the local high school in favor of home schooling interspersed with a strict regiment of instrumental and vocal practice, along with jumping jacks and sit-ups. Soon after The Shaggs would enter Fleetwood Recording studios in Revere, Massachusetts to record their sole album, Philosophy Of The World, a collection of garage rock tunes that balanced charm and discordance in equal measure. Austin would spend most of his savings not only on the session but also on the manufacturing costs to press up 1,000 copies of the album (900 of which mysteriously vanished upon completion).

Throughout the album's simple truths are revealed through the pen of sister Dot, the songwriter of the band. The rich people want what the poor people got, just as the poor people want what the rich people got. Your parents love you. There is happiness in nearness and sadness in the farness.

The album failed to fulfill Austin's expectations of rock stardom, though the group remained together until their father's death, performing frequently at the Fremont town hall and a local nursing home, no further albums were released. That might have been the end of it, until rock band NRBQ discovered a copy at a Massachusetts radio station and re-released it in 1980. Rolling Stone's reviewer at the time described it as the most stunningly awful wonderful record I've heard in ages'.

Nearly 50 years later, the album ranks among the most polarizing LPs of all time. Some said it was the worst thing ever made. Others felt it was one of the great long players of the 20th century. Frank Zappa famously dubbed the band better than The Beatles', while Kurt Cobain placed the album at #5 on his list of Top 50 favorite albums. Original copies of the album fetch for $10,000.

Decades later and one could argue that maybe Austin was right all along. We're all here, still enthralled by the purity of The Shaggs.

Josienne Clarke & Ben Walker - Through The Clouds Ep
  • A1: Silverline (New Recording With Guitar, Calimba & Piano)
  • A2: Hares On The Mountain (New Arrangement)
  • B1: The Tangled Tree (From 'Nothing Can Bring Back The Hour')
  • B2: Done (New Acoustic Recording)

The English folk duo, Josienne Clarke and Ben Walker, deliver a hauntingly beautiful set of four songs on Through the Clouds. Everything about the EP seems to whisper, 'considered' in a soft and elegant tone. For example, the largely acoustic backdrop of 'The Tangled Tree' has occasional electronic drones weaved into it, making for a unique soundscape. At times, the work of Enya is brought to mind, no doubt thanks in some part to Clarke's powerful, though never menacing, voice. Despite these features, pre-existing fans may be left scratching their heads on seeing this release's track listing. Indeed, three of the songs have appeared on previous studio albums released by Clarke and Walker.

Fear not, however, as these tracks have been re-orchestrated for Through the Clouds, which will be released only in the United States. The result is a crisper, instrumentally minimal take on some of the most beloved tunes in the duo's repertoire. Particularly notable is 'Silverline', which was formerly orchestral in accompaniment, being transformed into a rustic acoustic guitar affair. It's much more approachable, in short. It's the kind of music as fit to accompany a sunrise as it is a rainy day. You'll see what I mean if you choose to hear this emotionally perceptive and down-to-earth release. I highly recommend that you do.

The Garbage & The Flowers - The Deep Niche

If you were a certain type of music fan in the mid-'90s, you may have heard tell of an incredible, incredibly hard-to-find double-album by The Garbage & The Flowers, Eyes Rind As If Beggars. Each jacket was hand-painted, and all 300 copies sold out in a flash. The group was Helen Johnstone, Yuri Frusin and Paul Yates—an inspired trio who emphasized lyrical collaboration and sound manipulation as part and parcel to their melodies. They didn't last long as a group, but luckily, they got a lot of their songs recorded. The Deep Niche is music they made before Eyes Rind and it is every bit as revelatory.

Josefus - Josefus

  • A2: B.s. Creek

  • A5: Sefus Blues
  • B1: Jimmy, Jimmy
  • B2: Feelin' Good
  • B3: Condition
  • B4: I Saw A Killin
  • B5: Such Is Life

Josefus' second album was actually an improvement over the band's first (Dead Man), by virtue of its more versatile songwriting, slightly better riffs, and occasional drifts beyond sub-Led Zeppelin-style early metal. All that considered, it's still a pedestrian Led Zeppelin-like Texas take on early hard rock-metal, though Pete Bailey's vocals are a little less obviously in the Robert Plant mold this time around. Less blues-based than Dead Man as well, it contains some of their better songs in "America," which shows the influence of lighter California-styled psychedelia, the odd "Jimmy, Jimmy," apparently about a friend unfairly institutionalized for freaking out (inspired by fellow Texan Roky Erickson by any chance), and, most surprisingly, the gentle country-rock of "Such Is Life." (Italian imprint Akarma reissued the album as an expanded version, complete with six bonus tracks.)

The Cuban singer Ibrahim Ferrer emerged as perhaps the most popular star of the Buena Vista Social Club ™ phenomenon. World Circuit is proud to announce the release of his final album 'Mi Sueño' (My Dream) the project he dreamed of realising all his life - an album devoted to the most meltingly romantic of all Cuban styles - the bolero.
'Mi Sueño' is an intimate arranged by Roberto Fonseca, the remarkable young pianist with whom he had developed a deep musical understanding. Recorded in Havana in 2004, the year before he died, with a wonderful small group that included Manuel Galbán on guitar and Cachaíto López on bass, the album is a very personal take on the bolero style - deeply traditional and at the same time startlingly modern. Full of passion and tenderness but still with an inimitable and irrepressible swing, Ibrahim sculpts familiar songs into fresh and atmospheric creations that are uniquely his own.
As Ibrahim said, I have just one thing left to tell you all. We dream together and we will keep doing it. If my days ended tomorrow I would leave very satisfied in having achieved my wish, the wish was that dream: to sing a bolero.'
A labour of love and the realisation of a dream, 'Mi Sueño' presents Ibrahim Ferrer as one of the world's great bolero singers - the way he always wanted to be remembered.

Several years ago k.d. lang sent an email to Neko Case and Laura Veirs on a whim. It read simply, "I think we should make a record together." Though the three musicians were barely more than acquaintances "Laura and I both responded immediately," recalls Case. "There was no question."

But now there is an answer. 'case/lang/veirs,' a new album by three phenomenal, self-driven artists will be released June 17 on Anti- with an extensive tour to follow. 'case/lang/veirs' features fourteen new, original songs written by the artists over a period of two-and-a-half years. It was recorded in Portland, OR where lang and Veirs both live, and produced by Tucker Martine with the group. Sessions commenced in lang's loft with a view of Mount St. Helens, and in Veirs' dining room and backyard studio.

Full of stunning harmonies and spellbinding rhythms, 'case/lang/veirs' draws inspiration from alluring, mysterious subjects: a supermoon, the tumbledown story of 70s singer Judee Sill, and the "best kept secret" in Silver Lake, to name but three. Anti- is sharing the album's lead track "Atomic Number," which features vocals by all three singers, today.

1966-67 garage anthems, jangly folk-rock and baroque pop courtesy of prolific songwriter Paul Myerberg aka Paul Martin.

There a new man in town - Martin!' So began the liner notes from the picture sleeve of his second 45 record in 1967. Actually, Paul Martin started life as Paul Myerberg. Growing up in Manhattan, Paul was influenced by the exciting music of the day, like the Rolling Stones and Bob Dylan.

In the mid-Sixties Paul started writing and recording some impressive demos which ran the gamut from garage-punk, to jangly folk-rock, soul-pop and baroque, orchestrated pop. Many of these were cut on 4-track tape at Tower Sound Studios in midtown Manhattan with the help and guidance of the skilled jazz musician, Frank Owens. While at Tower, Paul met Herb Ostrow who released Paul's first single on the IMPEX label out of Philadelphia. It Happened', a terrific garage number, came out in the spring of 1966. The following year, Paul released a second 45 on his own Rodin label, The Last Remains of our Love' (another impressive, passionate garage gem), backed with The Fairy Princess' (a dreamy pop-psych track).

Almost 30 years later Paul's first album was released on the Distortions Records label, compiling tracks from his two sought-after singles plus studio demos and acetates. For many people, this was the first introduction to the music of Paul Martin, the man with a Brill Building inside his head. Now, we present a revamped version of that compilation, featuring new artwork, newly remastered sound, insert with rare photos / liner notes and one previously unreleased track from 1967.

First ever vinyl reissue of this 'Incredible Strange Music', private press (infamous) classic, championed by lovers of the wonderful & weird such as Jello Biafra. A time capsule which will send you back to the post-beatnik, pre-psychedelic / hippie scene from L.A.

With his long red hair and matching beard, Robbie The Werewolf - a folksinger of the frantic variety with a fetish for monsters - was a striking performer with a manic stage presence, acting out his songs as much as singing them. His set consisted of his original songs and uniquely reworked versions of folk standards, played on a beat-up twelve-string guitar. This inspired some of the most bizarre songs ever committed to vinyl: listen to Count Dracula' and its proto-psychedelic, amazing echo effects or the insane DIY rocker Rockin' Werewolf'.

It was at The Wale Back in L.A one heady night in 1964, that Robbie's solo act was captured for posterity and released as a tiny private pressing. A few years later, Robbie was a founding member of L.A psychedelic band Clear Light. But that's another story...

*Insert with detailed liner notes by Gray Newell (Shindig!, Ugly Things) and Alan Brackett (Peanut Butter Conspiracy)

*LP housed in an old- school- style tip- on sleeve.

Unique artifact, made even more compelling by the fact that this guy later turned up in big time band Clear Light' - Patrick Lundborg (Acid Archives)

Robbie The Werewolf' was really a trip. Just the fact that he had that werewolf/vampire' folk act that he did was enough, but he was really a left-over from the beatnik generation and was way ahead of his time and was a precursor of the hippie movement - Alan Brackett (Peanut Butter Conspiracy)

This obscenely rare disc stars Robbie Robison plucking an acoustic guitar and singing kooky tunes about Halloween characters, sex, drinking and drugs that were quite radical for its day.' - Beverly Paterson (It's Psychedelic Baby)
