F.s.blumm & Nils Frahm - Tag Eins Tag Zwei

Followers of the Sonic Pieces catalogue will already be familiar with the individuals of F.S.Blumm and Nils Frahm as well as their acclaimed work as a duo. But even though they're making use of familiar instruments their new album Tag Eins Tag Zwei manages to add a new tone to their already unique language. By trading their post-processed sound sculptures that made up the two preceding albums in for intimate pieces of improvisation, this collaboration merges into the most soothing and life affirming recording the two have produced so far.

Guitars and toys are flowing next to piano and harmonium like an organic combination, shaping nine suits that abnegate any common categorization. Involving classical, jazz and folk influences it's the genuine use of tricks and delays that lift these improvisations above the ordinarXy and makes them both incredibly relaxing and exciting at the same time. It is almost ironic that by capturing accidental moments of free playing, Frank and Nils are succeeding at an even more impressive scale than their already highly satisfying previous output.

The result delivers a perfect example of how immediacy can be the most powerful approach to creating music. Based on a remarkable understanding of each other's phrasing the pair of sessions that comprises this album shows two vivid artists at the peak of their game: Unconditional spontaneity.

Joseph Allred - Fire And Earth

Joseph Allred fits the Guitar Soli realm perfectly, fully embodying the guitar loner typecast—he falls in line with Robbie Basho not only in his 12-string playing that has a leaning towards Eastern musical traditions and droning free form raga, but also in his educational background in philosophy and religious studies. Scissor Tail Editions decided to put out Fire An Earth after hearing only thirty seconds of the track Leitmotif'—there's a sincerity in Allred's music and way of life that has been missing from the modern age for a long time. Allred has been quietly releasing records for years, painstakingly designing and hand-printing most of the packaging, never promoting any of them. He hand-painted the covers for Fire and Earth and letterpressed the back covers of Dylan Golden Aycock's latest. Now inhabiting land that's been in his family for two hundred years, he says he's trying to find a place in the family legacy. In Fire An Earth, there is a searching and spiritual quality to the music, and also integrity.

Wes Tirey - Black Wind

On Black Wind, songwriter / guitarist Wes Tirey makes the case for quality over quantity. After a stream of well received cassettes, he assembled a reserved trio and laid down the soft law on a single night. Whereas his previous releases were turned inward, this album opens out like Terence Malick meditating on prairie grass. The arrangements are spacious, simple structures of voice and acoustic guitar, with sparse backing from a telecaster and a trap kit. In addition to this fine album on Scissor Tail Records is a thematically linked book to be released by Cabin Floor Esoterica. Titled Melodrama Blues: Selected Lyrics of Wes Tirey, it collects writings from Black Wind and three past albums, all related via Tirey's feel for a mythological americana, the threads of surrealist biblical imagery that underlie our cultural cosmos.

Giulio Wilson is an author, composer, winemaker organic and independent. He plays the piano and alto saxophone, the latter for artists such as Vinicio Capossela and Bobby Only, is his debut for the label of Enzo Iacchetti with his first solo album, "Alone in the Midwest." A surprising album of unreleased tracks featuring country sound, expressiveness of a rural world of which Wilson is part, a meeting point between Nashville and the Tuscan countryside, between Italy and America, a fusion of Italian melodies and sounds International typical of folk music with banjo, Steel Guitar and resonator guitars. To accomplish this album Julius Wilson has made use of important collaborations: the Roberto Quilts writer, music producer Eddy Mattei, guitarist Marco Di Maggio, the voice and writing Bobby Solo.

IRON & WINE - KISS EACH OTHER CLEAN

Kiss Each Other Clean, Iron and Wine’s fourth full-length record, was originally released in 2011 and came three years after his biggest selling record up to that point, The Shepherd’s Dog. The bands two earlier albums had been sparse, intimate solo affairs that offered no hint of the direction he would take with records three and four. Like The Shepherd’s Dog, Kiss Each Other Clean is layered with textures, poly-rhythmic sounds and a more is more approach.

The album's 10 tracks were recorded in Chicago and Beam's hometown of Austin and produced by Brian Deck and sounds like the music people heard in their parent's car growing up. clarinet and saxophone on the album comes courtesy of Dave Sitek collaborator Stuart Bogie. Beam has also experimented with other genres on the record as well as classic AOR. There are straight-up jazz, blues, and african elements.

Blackest Ever Black marked its fifth anniversary in 2015 with events at the ICA in London and Berghain in Berlin. The former featured an unforgettable performance from Mick Hobbs' Officer!, the shapeshifting group's first in twenty-odd years. For this show Hobbs - surely the UK DIY underground's greatest living songwriter - as joined by longtime collaborators Mary Currie of Flaming Tunes (voice, shruti, theremin, glock) and Joey Stack (keyboards, voice), with Tilly Bean on bass, Ed Bernez on drums and Lydia Fischer contributing flute, trumpet and baritone horn. The setlist comprised songs from Dead Unique, the "lost" 1995 album by Officer! which Blackest Ever Black released in 2014, a smattering of earlier classics from the '70s-'80s (including 'Life At The Water's Edge' and 'Dogface) and heart-rending covers of 'Beguiling The Hours' and 'The Best Weapon' from Mary Currie and the late Gareth Williams' peerless Flaming Tunes album. The show was recorded, and has been beautifully mixed for release by Deerhoof's John Dieterich. A co-release from BEB and Hobbs' own Life & Living Records in a strictly limited edition of 300, with riso-printed insert artwork by Li Williams.

Second album from Isasa (aka Conrado Isasa) released on Spain's La Castanya label. Again soaked in flamenco, but through the prism of the American Primitive scene - both its originators (Fahey, et al) but also modern exponents like the greatly missed Jack Rose - Los Dias' 9 songs are primarily acoustic but with lap and electric guitars in the mix too. Shifting from lyrical flights to more atonal moments, I've spent hours lost in Los Dias and I recommend you do the same.

Madrid's Conrado Isasa is another composer and musician in deep thrall to the allure of American Primitive. Using acoustic, electric and Weissenborn guitars and banjo, his worldless narratives reveal both an impresive technical dexterity and an innate molodicism with hints of European folk and Indian classical music.

One of the chief pleasures of schlepping a guitar through Europe and the UK over the years has been the opportunity it's afforded me to meet and hear other musicians.

When John Fahey made his first recordings in 1958 he could not possibly have foreseen how far-reaching his influence would be. Today the path that John hacked through the musical wilderness of the latter part of the 20th Century has snaked its way across the whole planet, to countries, cities, and backwaters he never set foot in. It's more than just a little astonishing how widely the style of guitar music John created has traveled, taken up by people he never laid eyes on or imagined might exist.

Which brings me to Madrid's Conrado Isasa. Conrado sent me his first album, Las Cosas, a year ago. It was a good first effort, I thought. Not everything worked, but I could hear in it the stirrings of a musician of depth, one who had obviously spent hours, days, years absorbing the works of the players who had come before him and countless dusks and dawns alone with a guitar, learning how to let it speak for him.

With Los Días ("Days") Conrado has more than come into his own. His technique has matured to the point where you don't hear technique anymore, just what he has to say.

Commenting on each song would be pointless -this is an album after all, not just a collection of individual pieces- but whether he's employing acoustic, lap steel or electric guitar, there is a unity of purpose here and an underlying sense of calm and flow (and drama -- Los Días Have Gone By) that is irresistible and compelling.

This is inner music -more for Sunday morning than Saturday night- born of solitude, of a love of the sheer sound of the guitar as a means of personal expression and exploration. I'm impressed by how unforced Los Días feels, how willing Conrado is to let his music take him -and us- where it will.

It's a captivating voyage, one I hope you'll relish as much as I do.

Strut present the first in a series of essential original LP reissues exploring rare and under-rated African, Latin and Caribbean music classics, curated by Duncan Brooker. In January 2017, the series kicks off with 'Sugar Daddy', an experimental highlife / disco outing by Nigerian highlife guitarist Joe King Kologbo.Building his career as a composer and player with Eastern Star Dance Band at their residency at the Atlantic Hotel in Aba, Eastern Nigeria, Joe King Kologbo was forced to flee to Ghana when the Biafran War broke out in 1967. As his son Oghene recalls, when war came, everything just scatter. He lost his house, everything.'Joe King played with a variety of bands in Ghana including Real Ruby's, a jazz highlife big band, before returning to Lagos in 1971. By the time he recorded the 'Sugar Daddy' LP for the tiny Electromat label in 1980, he was one of the older musicians on the circuit. Oghene Kologbo remembers, My Mum used to say, 'I hope you don't go and play guitar everywhere and play around, don't go and be Sugar Daddy!' All my father's friends nicknamed him 'Sugar Daddy' so he did the song in a fun way. He was a nice man. He never did 'playboy'.Since he was based in the East during his early days, he was not as well known nationally as some of the other highlife players of the time,' continues Oghene,'so it's nice that this album is coming out again. It brings back good memories.

In 2014 Federale contributed several songs to Ana Lily Amirpour's acclaimed gothic vampire film noir, A Girl Walks Home Alone At Night,' as well as the director's 2016 film The Bad Batch."
Their fourth album, All The Colours Of The Dark' finds Federale entering new territory. Though the new record contains cinematic instrumentals that the band is known for, it also sees Federale expanding its vision to narrative songs in the baritone driven style of heroes Lee Hazelwood, Scott Walker & Nick Cave. Murder, revenge, regret, power and corruption are the lyrical themes of this collection.

In between the release of Dungen's most recent two albums (2010's Skit I Allt and 2015's Allas Sak), the beloved Stockholm quartet was asked to create an original score to Lotte Reiniger's 1926 touchstone The Adventures of Prince Achmed, understood to be the oldest surviving full-length animated feature film. Inspired by the work and the characters - Prince Achmed, Peri Banu, Aladdin, the Sorcerer, and most of all, the Witch - the members of Dungen immersed themselves into the groundbreaking visual language of this landmark film.

Häxan (translation: The Witch') is Dungen's first all-instrumental album. Produced by Mathias Glavå, and recorded, mixed, and edited by hand to tape entirely in the analog domain, Häxan was sequenced away from the linear narrative of the film. This process helped to create a path of its own, fully capturing the rawness and spontaneity present in the sessions, as well as a loose, abstract, and fragmented collage feel. Dense with dissonant free-form rock-outs, haunting ambient passages, and gorgeously cinematic soundscapes present in the work, Häxan is a record that stands on its own outside of the presence of its primary inspiration. Moody, evocative, stormy, and brimming with life, Häxan provides both a tacit summation of the Dungen journey until now, and gives the beloved group a chance to stretch out like never before.

Häxan (translation: The Witch') is Dungen's first all-instrumental album. Produced by Mathias Glavå, and recorded, mixed, and edited by hand to tape entirely in the analog domain, Häxan was sequenced away from the linear narrative of the film. This process helped to create a path of its own, fully capturing the rawness and spontaneity present in the sessions, as well as a loose, abstract, and fragmented collage feel. Dense with dissonant free-form rock-outs, haunting ambient passages, and gorgeously cinematic soundscapes present in the work, Häxan is a record that stands on its own outside of the presence of its primary inspiration. Moody, evocative, stormy, and brimming with life, Häxan provides both a tacit summation of the Dungen journey until now, and gives the beloved group a chance to stretch out like never before.

In between the release of Dungen's most recent two albums (2010's Skit I Allt and 2015's Allas Sak), the beloved Stockholm quartet was asked to create an original score to Lotte Reiniger's 1926 touchstone The Adventures of Prince Achmed, understood to be the oldest surviving full-length animated feature film. Brighton folk punk band Levellers are celebrating the 25th anniversary of their timeless platinum-selling, second album Levelling The Land with a three-disc special edition package, which will be released on November 18th through their own label On The Fiddle Recordings.

Following the release, the band will be embarking on a mammoth UK tour including a performance at London's Brixton Academy for the 15th time in their career. They will be playing the classic album in full as well as other hits from their 28-year career and will be supported by Ferocious Dog and Gaz Brookfield.

The Levelling The Land special edition will be available as a 2CD & 1DVD set featuring the original album, plus a live version recorded at Brixton Academy and a DVD of that performance. There will also be a limited edition 2LP coloured vinyl set featuring the original album plus the live version.

Levelling The Land was originally released in 1991 and features the hit singles 'One Way', '15 Years' and 'Far From Home' plus 'The Game', 'Liberty Song', 'Another Man's Cause', 'Riverflow', 'Boatman' and the incendiary 'Battle Of The Beanfield'.

During that summer, Levelling The Land redefined the UK's musical landscape providing the soundtrack for a society fed up with the twin evils of Thatcherite politics, and the post-80's pre-grunge musical wasteland. Emerging victorious through the ups and downs of label deals, spats with the music press and the wear and tear of touring, the Levellers are still going strong after nearly 30 years in the game.

Formed of Mark Chadwick, Jeremy Cunningham, Charlie Heather, Jon Sevink, Simon Friend and Matt Savage, The Levellers run their own label and their own studio as well as their own festival, 'Beautiful Days'. Cherished and maligned in equal measure, they are one of Britain's finest musical exports as witnessed by the huge North American and Australian tours that precede this release and their victorious UK shows.

John Duncan - This Bitter Earth

Further to John Duncan's remarkable album of cover versions, Bitter Earth, iDEAL present an additional 7" featuring his haunting version of the '60s R&B classic which gave that LP its title, alongside covers of Jules Styne and Pere Ubu evergreens.
Whilst best known for his extensive research in the fields of EVP, psycho-acoustic phenomenon and experimental music, this 7" also serves to reveal Duncan's exquisite taste for popular music, albeit toned to fit his unique catalogue of sounds.
At Duncan's hands, This Bitter Earth is transformed into an ambient lament fronted by his own, husky vocals which really emphasise the titular lead phrase but counter it with more optimistic swells of keys by Eiko Ishibashi and "damaged accordion" from his regular collaborator, Carl Michael Hauswolff beautifully ambiguous, almost redemptive effect.
It's followed by a compellingly mournfully take on Jules Styne's I Fall In Love Too Easily, channelling its forsaken feels into a lowlit chamber jazz vibe with solo vocals accompanied by Domenico Sciajno's standup bass, before tempering the glam swagger
of Pere Ubu obscure B-side Final Solution (1976) with a bed of looming Hammond organ and spare percussion that descends into a heavily abstracted drone..

Huge Tony Allen album originally issued around 1984. This officially licensed reissue holds an extra track previously unreleased on viny, called "Olokun".... TIP
Never Expect Power Always (aka N.E.P.A.) is largely a biting criticism and mocking of the Nigerian Electrical Power Authority, rife with corruption and poor service. It starts out with the title track, with a definite Afro-beat punch and a tighter arrangement than would normally be expected from Fela. Electro-claps stand as part of the percussion line, adding to a more modern look at what Afro-beat was becoming. This is followed by an even further modernized piece of Afro-beat, as the title track is given a dub mix. "When One Road Close" has a similar pace, and is similarly followed by a dub remix, complete with the necessary space-effects reverb. And to make this reissue extra special the track "Olokun" was never released on vinyl before.

This is the peak of electronic Afro-beat! If you didn't pick the album up the first time around, this is a good time to get it.

Named after a Dylan song, Angelina has lived all her life on the Isle Of Wight. Growing up with the blues, folk, country, gospel, jazz and rock'n'roll. She taught herself to sing by listening to Bessie Smith, Ma Rainey and field recordings of country blues singers working on the land.Developing her own song writing style inspired by the likes of Wanda Jackson and Karen Dalton, her debut album is given a 21st Century sonic overall by fellow island dweller Rupert Brown who adds raw mechanical production and unusual instrumentation.The results are not dissimilar to those LPs coming out of Spacebomb studios (Matthew E White + co), but here tough cosmic country rubs with dustbowl soul and lyrics about isolation and celebration.

Growing up in a small coastal cottage, with the beach and country lanes as her playground, Angelina's English father would paint (see Vagabond Saint's artwork) and sing her to sleep every night. Her Chinese mother would teach Angelina to cook and sew whilst sounds escaped from the record player; those made great by Little Richard, Jerry Lee Lewis, sea shanty bands, gospel, 20s jazz singers, English folkies and country blues guitarists like Mississippi Fred McDowell and Blind Willie Johnson.

Listening to those recordings, Angelina would teach herself how to sing; Bessie Smith and Ma Rainey would guide the way for the young singer as she attempted to channel their spirit through her own unique voice. 'I would practice a sentence from a track for hours. I remember hearing a field recording of female country blues singers working on the land and it spoke volumes to me. I learnt loads of the songs and rehearsed in different rooms which changed the sound of my voice; the bathroom was great for that moaning blues sound with its natural reverb.'

Once, after testing out the reverb at a house party, Angelina's musical education continued when she was taught a valuable lesson by a travelling American blues singer, who told her through a whiskey-soaked miasma, 'You got the tools but ya don't know how to use them'. Undeterred, Angelina continued looking towards her heroes - Karen Dalton ('Everything about her vocal story and sound, her voice goes straight to the jugular'), Wanda Jackson, Memphis Minnie and Jo-Ann Key. Later finding herself Stateside, learning all the jazz chords whilst staying in the home of Hawaiian slide guitar guru, Bob Brozman.

The years passed honing her sound and songcraft - Angelina could often be found braving the elements busking the isles small towns. The epiphany was finding a kindred spirit in fellow island dweller and producer/multi-instrumentalist, Rupert Brown (Roy Ayres, Pete Molinari, Jill Scott, Robbie Robertson, Daryl Hall, and resident drummer at Liam Watson's Toe Rag studios). Giving the fruits of Angelina's old time influences their glory through a 21st Century vision, unusual instrumentation and raw mechanical production, Vagabond Saint's sonic cocktail accentuates the guts and grip of a true collaboration.

A process of re-sculpturing and exaggerating observations of real-life, Vagabond Saint's lyrics are equally inspired by the art world; two tracks were written on day trips to London galleries and named after Alexej Jawlensky's 'Manola' and Paul Benn 'Vagabond Saint', when Angelina took it upon herself to create stories for the paintings depicting loneliness, which reached out to her.

Resonating like porch-tales told by grandmothers from their rocking chairs whilst tumbleweed rolls across the dust bowls, Vagabond Saint boasts a truly rare nu-ranch sound capturing everything from isolation to celebration. Feelings that have been whistling down the wind for centuries and found a new voice in Angelina, which thankfully you don't need a ferry to hear it no more.

I'm Wide Awake, It's Morning and Digital Ash in a Digital Urn, two separate albums, were simultaneously released on January 25, 2005, providing unequivocal proof that then 24 year-old Oberst belongs to the lineage of great American songwriters. These albums are a soundly articulated slice of modern American life rolled into two very different records. REPRESS OF 2003 LUAKA BOP CLASSIC ALBUM

Moreno, Kassin and Domenico were childhood friends from school. They formed a band and made three albums, each one under a different one's name. Their records are different and very influential in Brazil. Morneo is the son of legendary Brazilian musician Caetano Veloso. You can hear him at age 8 on the first Luaka Bop release ( Beleza Tropical') singing the words Ilê Ayê' on Caetano's song of the same name.

Moreno's record is to some extent the most conventional of the three, even though Domenico, the drummer, plays drums on a sampler and cymbal sounds using sand paper. The next release, Domenico's, had the greatest success in the indie world, while Kassin's album is the most produced (which makes sense as he has become one of the most successful producers in Brazil).
