Sunlightsquare - Super People / Papa Was A Rolling Stone

It has been a long time coming and it is well worth the wait. The eagerly anticipated next release from Sunlightsquare is here. This Double-A-Sided EP features an original Salsoul inspired disco/boogie cut called 'Super People', which is coupled with a completely unique reimagining of The Temptations' hit 'Papa Was A Rolling Stone'.

Once again, the brilliant Italian producer Claudio Passavanti has not only torn up the rulebook but he has completely re-written it. Never scared to experiment, Claudio has once again delivered a new set of superb dancefloor creations.

'Super People' features the magnificent UK Jazz Trumpeter Quentin Collins taking the lead on this track, with outstanding vocal supplementation from Tasita D'Mour (Roy Ayers, Kyoto Jazz Massive) and, from Santiago de Cuba, Rene Alvarez.

DJs will be spinning 'Super People' in clubs all over the world and the track will be heard in the middle of Salsoul, Philly and Boogie sets and in more contemporary sets everywhere, dancefloors will be on fire.

'Papa Was A Rolling Stone' revisits this Temptations 1972 Motown anthem and it follows beautifully in the footsteps of Sunlightsquare's 'I Believe In Miracles' and 'Fantasy', and it is true, they all fall into the category of songs you should never cover unless you can do what Claudio can to them. After all, who takes a song like this and has the ability to turn it completely inside out and create a uniquely sounding version that pays respect to the original Only Sunlightsquare!

'Papa Was A Rolling Stone' features vocals from the very talented Wayne Hernandez, who has sung with Grover Washington, London Community Gospel Choir and Kool & the Gang to name a few, and Wayne delivers a powerful and emotional performance here.

Once again, you can hear Sunlightsquare's signature all over these records, exciting percussion, syncopated rhythm, great vocals and Claudio Passavanti's dexterous keyboard skills.

These tracks will bursting out of radio speakers and tearing up a dancefloors near you, so make sure you have your copy!

Alfredo De La Fe - Alfredo (cd)

Now we enter territories of smooth disco grooves and spicy samba rhythms as solid background for whipping melodies of the most charming kind. This is a lush late 70s disco production with an affinity for jazz that showcases a band lead by a truly gifted violin player. Elements of electronic dance and pop music and Latin sounds embrace each other and get tied together by sexy funky bass guitar lines. Samba, Salsa and whatever South America has to offer join forces with the Western club music of the day and in between all those fluffy but rich arrangements some freaked out piano eruptions and twisted song structures prove Alfredo De La Fe's fondness for the jazz scene aside from the mainstream. His violin turns into a screeching demon raging upon an ever flowing pulse of percussions, bass and drums. And the beat will definitely not leave you alone for the whole playing time. Alfredo's violin is the secret star of this record and he as the multicultural band leader, born in Cuba, living in the USA after 16 years in Columbia, knows to enchant and fascinate his listeners with songs that have the charm of pop and the edges great jazz offers, fused into one vivid world of sound. The deep and wide structures invite you to take a trip through a pulsating city with music, dances and happy spirits everywhere. My favorite here is the truly modernized but utterly hypnotizing 'My favorite things' I only used to know from John Coltrane before. Folks, Alfredo De La Fe might play a really smooth, happy and lightweight music but this man really pulls it off. No wonder that original pressings of this album go for 180,00 Dollars. Now we can change that with a beautiful fresh reissue and if you are a lover of Latin music, disco and funk, be welcome to lend your ears to Alfredo De La Fe.

Bembeya Jazz - Sous La Direction De Diaoune Hamidou

1 of 4 albums in a series that represents a unique moment in African music. Faithfully recreated from the best original sources.
60 years ago West Africa was bursting with energy as first Ghana, and then in 1958 Guinea, gained their independence. In the case of Guinea her birth was sudden and dramatic as France, the then colonial power, withdrew within one month of the vote for independence, famously taking 'everything including the lightbulbs'.

Guinea had to start from scratch, not least in her approach to the arts which the new state wanted to modernise while still remaining true to tradition. This policy was called authenticité. Music was its focus, Syliphone its record label and Guinean music soon became a shining example for other emerging African nations. It even attracted artists and activists such as Miriam Makeba and her then husband, ex-Black Panther, Stokely Carmichael who, harrassed by the CIA, moved to Guinea in 1968.

Under authenticité, musicians were employed by the state, given instruments and encouraged to create a new but traditionally-rooted music. A whole system of regional and national bands was established, with regular competitions to establish precedence. It's also worth noting that from the Guinean perspective, this 'tradition' included Latin music, the African roots of which were considered so obvious as to be beyond debate.

Very quickly, three bands rose to the top: Orchestre Paillote, later to become Keletigui et ses Tambourinis; Orchestre du Jardin de Guinée, later to become Balla et ses Balladins; and perhaps the strongest of them all, Bembeya Jazz. In each case our selection features their first full-length album recordings, faithfully recreated as originally presented, sequenced and released in 1967.

Nine years later, in 1976, the situation was not so positive. Guinea's economy was struggling and political dissent had arisen. It is against this background that the 4th album in our series, 'Musiques sans paroles' was recorded and released. Entirely instrumental, it features a variety of groups, including Miriam Makeba's sometime backing band, the Quintette Guinéenne, and remains remarkably fresh today with e.g. Tam-tam sax referencing the free jazz sounds of Pharoah Sanders or Albert Ayler, while in Flute parlant, showcasing the traditional flute of the Fula people.

Fila Brazillia is the electronica collaboration of Steve Cobby and David McSherry from Kingston upon Hull, Yorkshire in North-East England. They play Electronica, Ambient, Techno, Rock, Funk and Dub, though the music is often described by others as 'Downtempo'.

Formed in 1990, their early releases include Old Codes New Chaos, Maim That Tune, Mess, Black Market Gardening, Luck Be A Weirdo Tonight and Power Clown soon followed. Later, after creating their own music label with Sim Lister (Twentythree Records) in 1999, they released further albums A Touch Of Cloth, Jump Leads, The Life And Times Of Phoebus Brumal, Dicks and Retrospective.

Maim That Tune was released in 1995. This album was dedicated to the deceased stand-up comedian, satirist and social critic Bill Hicks. Fila Brazillia really mix it up on Maim That Tune, constructing various takes on Techno, including elements of Hip-Hop, House, African music and a continuous stream of luxuriously lush ambient Funk.

Quarter Street - Quarter Street

From the first few notes, it sounds like the real thing. Piano and bass riff hard. Percussion enters. ¡Oiga Papa! Listen up! The trombones come in thick and strong. Fantasia, the first song on Quarter Street's self-titled LP is authentic 'salsa dura' from the old school. Hard salsa. It's not shiny, it's not clean and poppy or unduly jazzy. It's tough, it's gritty and ballsy, and in terms of musicianship, writing and production, it straight up cooks.

Mundo Meu is Flavia Coelho's new recording that sees her going back to her roots plunging into an
urban jungle with coloured natve slang. Unfolding her inner world like an immense, multcoloured
urban map, her fow resonates to an urban Baile Funk; Repente becomes Afrobeat; Forró and Samba
fnd a new life fuelled with Hip-Hop; African roots join Kanak chants; Bolero joins Ragga while East
European music becomes tropical via Jamaica. On the stand-out opener, 'Por Cima', we hear of a wom-
an who sacrifces all for her man in a Brazilian Bolero inspired by the traditonal songs that her father
listened to.
Elswhere Flavia sings of both the beauty and the dangers of Brazil; she pays tribute the street artsts
and workers of the favelas and of the solidarity between expats. With a stellar cast of guests that
include German superstar Patrice, cult rapper Speech (Arrested Development), accordionist Fixi of Java
and the legendary drummer Tony Allen, Flavia builds new aural textures on the memory and culture of
Brazilian music.

Supafrico 6 - The Sound Of Funky Africa

Camp Supafrico return with the sixth edition of their highly acclaimed 'Sound of Funky Africa' series. Digging even deeper into the Afro-funk vaults, side A features the über-rare 1984 Shina Williams and His African Percussionists 'Agboju Logun'. Grooving along for a massive eleven and a half minutes, this super-heavy Nigerian disco cut splices raw sounding horns with choirs and chants. Seriously epic. Flip over for 'Don't Do It' from Bongi Makeba, a mesmerising afro-funk workout with her powerful voice weaving in and out of the grooving bass and spaced-out sax. Last up is the sought-after 'Mangous Ye' from Black Soul. Originally the B-side of a 1976 release on tiny but top-quality NYC label Beam Junction, this Tom Moulton mixed slice of high-octane percussion-soaked afro-disco hit big on Italy's Cosmic scene as well as the clubs of New York. Another surefire hit from the Supafrico imprint.

Alex Mendoza Y Sus Poetas Del Ritmo - Icumbalo!

The Poets of Rhythm have a legendary track record in modern music. Recording under multiple aliases and a revolving-door membership list, the German group were pioneers in the revival of gritty funk and soul music, bursting on the scene in the 1990s championing a raw recording style that directly influenced Daptone, Quantic and others. Never a group to be pegged into one particular style, the Poets have successfully taken that ultra gritty realism into styles of West African Funk, Ethiopian Groove, and now, for the first time on record, courtesy of Names You Can Trust, Afro-Peruvian Cumbia. Led by drummer / multi-instrumentalist Max Weissenfeldt and Peruvian guitarist Alex Mendoza, this new iteration of the Poets blitzes its way through two original takes on cumbia. Alex Mendoza's quintessentially Peruvian style psychedelic guitar licks lay a sabor never heard before onto Max's typically raw and funky percussion style. ¡Viva la Poetas del Ritmo!

Pat Thomas & Kwashibu Area Band - Pat Thomas & Kwashibu Area Band

I'm an afrobeat drummer but Pat Thomas is highlife. That is what he does so well.' Tony Allen
Strut are proud to announce the brand new studio album by one of Ghana's all-time great vocalists, The
Golden Voice Of Africa', Pat Thomas, in conjunction with the Kwashibu Area Band led by multi-instrumentalist
Kwame Yeboah (Cat Stevens, Patrice) and saxophonist Ben Abarbanel-Wolff (Ebo Taylor, Poets of Rhythm).
Hailing from Kumasi, Thomas had lived with highlife legend King Onyina from a young age before working
with Ebo Taylor in two of Ghana's great 1960s highlife big bands, Broadway Dance Band and Stargazers. They
would collaborate regularly, Pat contributing vocals to Ebo's solo albums and Ebo arranging horns for Pat's
songs. Both would become a mainstay of the '70s and '80s Ghanaian highlife, afrobeat and afro-pop scenes,
hitting big with the Ghana Cocoa Board-sponsored Sweet Beans band. Fela Kuti's bandleader, drummer Tony
Allen, would record a session with Sweet Beans in Kumasi in 1975 (as yet unreleased). Highlife was our
music,' Pat remembers. People like Ebo and I modernised it, made it more relevant to our day. We took the
Kwa music of Kumasi and other local styles and added Western elements.' With his distinctive flowing vocal
style, sung in Fanti and Ashanti Twi dialect, Pat became established as one of Ghana's biggest musical draws.

Closer/tam Tam

12inchWAM2003
22.04.2013

Limited reissue of this incredible and highly sought-after futuristic 12' from 1981. Released on West African Music, a tiny label from the Ivory Coast, and finding a spiritual home on the Italian eclectic cosmic scene, both tracks on this 12' are brilliantly innovative and exhibit a minimal techno-esque aesthetic way ahead of their time.
Side A's Closer is a chugging sinuous flow punctuated by jerking monotone vocals, horn stabs and synth arpeggios with a strong dancefloor sensibility. Flip over for stunningly weird electronic percussion workout Tam Tam - a crazed sparse soundscape of strange falsetto tribal chants, funky hand claps and drums, synth wobbles, spasms and tweaks. Mystery surrounds the identity of the elusive artist Codek but evidence points to it being an offshoot project of French New Wave producer John Marieux. Essential!

Achilifunk Sound System - Robot Caló

Since 2007, when Txarly Brown (DJ and collector) started his Achilifunk project, spanish gipsy danceable sounds have returned to the front pages of music magazines. After two compilation albums "Achilifunk, Gipsy Soul 1969-1979", "Más Achilifunk, Gipsy Soul from the 21st Century", Txarly founded the Banda Achilifunk (a big band with 17 musicians on stage) and released the album "Gitano Real". Two years later he published the book "Achilibook" and now he has finally launched its pilot project: the Achilifunk Sound System. A small combo which brings together the best spanish gipsy funk performers to recreate a repertoire of classic sounds mixing flamenco rumba with hip hop, funk, dubstep, house, disco, ska, reggae... An outstanding long play released in collaboration with Wah Wah records in a 500 copies limited edition that comes with remastered sound and includes an insert with liner notes and photos.

Various - Supalatino 2 - The Sound Of Funky Latin America

Supalatino returns with another top notch compilation of funky Latino floorfillers, digging even deeper into the vaults to bring you some serious fire. Side A features two incredible Latin versions of disco classics - first up is Louie Ramirez' laidback take on 'Do It Anyway Ya Wanna' by People's Choice filled with funky piano riffs and great mellow brass followed by a wonderful lost version of Barry White's 'Can't Get Enough Of Your Love Baby' by Puerto Rican Willy Chirino taken from his impossible to find 1977 'Chirino 3' LP. On the flip we get the 'The Barrel' by Majesty, an über-rare slice of exhilarating synth-laden Latin disco worth the price of this 12' on its own. Next up is 'Afro Hustle' by Lou Perez, a super-cool grooving gem plucked from his 1977 LP 'De Todo Un Poco' and lastly the excellent 'Escravos De Jo' by Brazilian drummer Dom Un Romao, a killer jazzy Latin track covered in the 90s by Kerri Chandler and Joe Claussell. A superb package.
