Paolo Achenza 4 - A Vida Em Seus Metodos Diz Calma B/w One For Little P
  • 1: A Vida Em Seus Metodos Diz Calma
  • 2: One For Little P

Paolo Achenza is back! His last recording 'Ombre ' goes back to 1996. A long period away from the musical scene, but notaway from the music that continues to be the lifeblood of Paolo's spirit; and today, with the same hallmarks of spontaneity and freshness shown before , he offers a more conscious and mature sound in the new single issued by Italian label A.MA Records.Paolo's new band has Umberto Calentini on bass, Roberto Lagattolla on drums and Vito Cascellaon percussion, plus important guests such as Gaetano Partipilo on saxophone and flute, Claudia Marrs on vocals, Diosvany Hernandsz Marino on trumpet and Enzo Bacco on tenor saxophone. The single presents a cover of the exciting song of the Brazilian singer Di Melo 'A Vida Em Seus Medotos Diz Calma' revisited in a modern vein plus an original entitled 'One for little P' .The result is a perfect blend of funk and soul jazz that has been Paolo's distinct trademark since the beginning of his career. All of this under the careful and elegant direction of DJ/producer Gerardo Frisina who produced andarranged the single. An explosive comeback to herald the new album being released in 2015.

(...)This reissue of one of the proves why Bonfá is heralded as one of bossa nova's most important and prolific interpreters. Accompanied by an unidentified horn and rhythm section and recorded in Paris in 1962 and '63, the album features original compositions, many of them coauthored by Maria Helena Toledo, and features Bonfá's rhythmically charged guitar style and his extraordinary, expressive vocal. The fourth track, 'Dor Que Faz Doer,' includes his percussive beating on the body of the guitar, and his probing vocal on the lilting 'Teu Olhar Triste' makes for one of the more tender pieces in the collection. Le Roi de la Bossa Nova is a celebration of the brilliance of one of Brazil's most beloved artists and should be a must for all avid collectors. (...)

Quiet Nights is the ninth studio album by jazz musician Miles Davis, and his fourth and final album collaboration with Gil Evans. The 60's saw the popularization of bossa nova in American homes and as an admitted admirer of the music from Brazil, it is not surprising that Miles Davis would attempt an album inspired by the new craze. Accompanied by Evan's conscientious arrangement, standards such as 'Once Upon summertime' and 'Wait till you see her' are performed with an unmistakably unique style that could only be done by Davis.

Recorded in Studios in New York City between July 27, 1962 & April 17, 1963

A famous European set from Thelonious Monk - recorded early in the 60s with his famous quartet that included Charlie Rouse on tenor! Rouse is already amazing - really stretching out in these modern, angular lines that are quite different than any of his recordings a few years before - a perfect match for the inventive piano of Monk, as would later be demonstrated on a host of classic studio recordings. There's an open, spontaneous energy between the pair in this live setting, though - almost like they're working out new ideas, but doing so perfectly - with the bass of John Ore and drums of Frankie Dunlop to round things out. Titles include 'Bemsha Swing', 'Crepuscule With Nellie', 'San Francisco Holiday', 'Body & Soul', 'Straight No Chaser', and 'Epistrophy' (Dusty Groove)

Batshit crazy Latin funk track that was originally released on Columbia's INS label before also being released on Miami Mogul and close friend of James Brown, Henry Stone's ' Blue Candle' Label. 'Hallelujah' was clearly not a hit on either label as any pressing of the rare beast is going to set you back £500 pounds plus and don't sound great due to a bad pressing. We did a bit of cleaning and got our masters at Timmion cutting laboratory to do their thing and came away with the loudest pressing you're ever going to manage of this beast, Watch Your Bassbins I'm Tellin' Ya.

On the flip 'Jonny's Theme' a cool soundtracky number with cracking drums and a wonderfully intense structure, more complex that the a side in timing structure and featuring some nice Kes style flutes.

LP

Rare and highly sought after in its original format, Os Brazoes self-titled album was originally released on RGE Discos in 1969. It is a psychedelic masterpiece that fuses samba, r'n'b and rock 'n' roll influences using fuzz guitars, synths, percussion, lush vocals and effects.

Os Brazoes formed in Rio de Janeiro in the late 1960's. They backed Gal Costa during her Tropicalia period, yet apparently never recorded in the studio with her. Miguel de Deus, the bands front man, recorded the highly sought after 'Black Soul Brothers' LP in 1977, which became an important record in the 'Black Rio' movement. Mr Bongo released the title track from that LP, on the 'Brazilian Beats: Brooklyn' compilation in 2006 and recently as part of their Brazil 45's re-issue series.

'Os Brazoes' features covers of Gilberto Gil's 'Pega a Voga, Cabeludo' and Jorge Ben and Toquinho's 'Carolina, Carol Bela'

The Mr Bongo LP reissue is manufactured in Japan, presented in a super high quality card sleeve with replica original artwork. The CD is presented in a 4-page digi-pack.

Tom Zé is a songwriter, multi-instrumentalist, innovator and composer who was hugely influential in the Tropicália movement of 1960s Brazil. Zé is often thought of as Brazil's answer to Zappa or Captain Beefheart; a true innovator and a true artist.

Mr Bongo re-issued Zé's debut record 'Grande Liquidicao' originally released in 1968. This, his second solo album, is self-titled, and was released by RGE Discos in 1970.

After the peak of the Tropicália period, Zé went into relative obscurity. It was only in the 1990s, when musician and Luaca Bop label founder David Byrne discovered an album recorded by Zé many years earlier, that he returned to performing and releasing new material.

Continuing in a similar musical vein to Grande Liquidicao, 'Tom Ze' is a wonderful combination of guitars, layered of percussion and tough rock 'n' roll, underpinned by Ze's instantly reconisable vocal.

Ze is in fact one of Brazil's most sampled artists. 'Jimmy, renda-se' has one of the most recognisable intros you will hear so it was no great surprise that Ameriie sampled it for her smash 'Take Control'.

All in all, another essential record from a true legend of Brazilian music.

This Mr Bongo reissue is manufactured in Japan, presented in a super high quality card sleeve with replica original artwork. The CD is presented in a 4-page digipack.

Jorge Ben in 1963, after the large impact of his first album Samba Esquema Novo (DOK225), goes back into the studio to realize his very cool early album Sacundin Ben Samba. Here Ben's work took a jazzy turn, with a crossover into Brazil's cabaretstyle pop. Some of these tracks have a straight jazz character, particularly with the piano and horn combos (and assist by Meirelles and Luiz Carlos Vinhas...) Interestingly enough, although he didn't stick with style long, his version of jazzy presentation swung heavier than most of the proper 'jazz' records of the time, by folks such as the Tambo Trio, etc.

** THE VERY FIRST RELEASE IN OUR LATIN 45's SERIES **

A. Pete Rodriguez - I Like It Like That

Band leader, arranger and pianist Pete Rodriguez' 'I Like It Like That' is a well know, all time classic taken from the 1966 LP 'I Like It Like That (A Mi Me Gusta Asi)', also released on 7' in 1967, both on New York based Alegre Records, which was eventually sold to Fania Records.

'I Like It Like That' bizarrely ended up being used by Odeon Cinema's in the UK as their pre-trailer branding track...!

AA. Joe Bataan - Subway Joe

'Subway Joe' by Joe Bataan, a true Latin Soul classic, taken from the seminal album of the same name, released by Fania in 1968. Bataan was a very succesful pianist, singer and band leader born in New York.

BEBEY, FRANCIS - PSYCHEDELIC SANZA 1982-1984 (2LP)
A double-LP set with a printed innersleeve which tells the inside story -written by Francis Bebey's son- of how he got to learn about the Sanza, a special African instrument. On this album guitar player, singer, composer and writer Francis Bebey (1929-2001) revisits the roots of his African music, playing sanza (the instrument on the picture), flutes and drums. Exploring these traditional patterns allows him to produce universal sounds, which was one of Francis Bebey's aspirations.

Hareton Salvanini started the group with his brother Ayreton in the 1970s. M.E.T.A were a theatrical movement based in Campinas (in the Sao Paulo State).

M.E.T.A was an acronym of Movimento Evolução De Teatro E Arte; Movement / Evolution / Theatre / Art. It wasn't a traditional music group, with M.E.T.A performing numerous musicals primarily focussing on subjects close to their hearts - liberation, freedom and youth. Their modus operandi was to experiment with different ideas in an attempt to create a new voice that represented their ideals.

Paulo Pugoiese composed the EP with Hareton & Ayerton also composing and writing lyrics. Paulo conducted the Sinfonica Campinas Orchestra and this was

the orchestra of the City Cidade Do Campina. It was that connection that enabled them to be able to afford an entire string section for the tracks. The

group who played on the recording only every played in a studio. They were never a live band.

Jazzanova Feat. Paul Randolph - Now There Is We

Since its foundation in 1997 Jazzanova always had a big following in Japan. And theintercultural exchange with the Japanese DJ scene has been brisk ever since. However, now for the very first time a remix 12inch jam-packed with works by artists from the land of the rising sun.In collaboration with Especial Records (Kyoto Massive member Yoshihiro Okino's label) four remixes for 'Now There Is We', Jazzanova's last single, had been commissioned. Starting things off is Kuniyuki Takahashi, producer and sound designer from Sapporo. The Future Jazz apostle bends and breaks - Now There Is We' until he puts down an impelling jazz piano accompanied track which would even bring tears to the late Frankie Knuckle's eyes.A completely different approach is applied by Mano Arriba (Spanish for - Hands up!'): Under his direction the song mutates to become a carnival-compliant salsa rhythm. Absolutely striking!

Although Jerome may be know today for his thunderous Techno beats that storm their way through clubs across the world every weekend, his musical taste and variety span just as far and wide as his music travels. Àró is a testament to how broad that musical spectrum stretches.
Àró (Full Afro Dub) is most certainly a record that would make Fela Kuti proud. A whirlwind of Afrobeat drums, rhythm and percussion fused together with elements of Jazz, Funk and House. The instrumentation leaves nothing to be desired as the combination of Jerome's arrangement and production combined with the other stellar musicians is a veritable lesson in musical structure.

The B-Side turns Àró into a straight up jam sessions. Awash in funky electric guitar licks, infusing the original with glimmers of psychedelic rock. Giving us a brief glimpse into the deepest corners of the vast array of music that provides him with inspiration.

This isn't your typical House record, but that is exactly what gives it charachter. Jerome's courage and continuous desire to release quality music he believes in, is one of the reasons his Ibadan label is one of the most respected imprints around.

Antonio Pinto & Ed Cortes - City Of God Ost

In telling the story of two friends from a tough Rio de Janeiro barrio whose lives can never seem to escape the favela where they were born and raised, the acclaimed film by Fernando Meirelles and Kátia Lund has drawn comparisons to such modern touchstones as Martin Scorsese's GoodFellas. Taking his inspiration from the filmmakers' daring gambit to cast real people in the roles and the film's '60s-'70s milieu, composer Antonio Pinto (assisted by partner Ed Córtes) has concocted a smart, rhythmically intoxicating cocktail of Brazilian jazz and samba, shaken with a little '70s American funk and R&B and served with cool, tropical flair. Those various styles often melt into each other with a liberating sense of postmodern possibility, giving listeners an experience that's as exotic as it is deceptively familiar, the worthy equatorial flip side of David Holmes's jazz-funk collaborations with Steven Soderbergh on Out of Sight and Ocean's Eleven.

On the heels of a steady rising, break out year in New York City, which has seen La Mecanica Popular perform & refine their "Psychedelic Salsa" sound in numerous venues throughout the area, as well as advance to become one of just 3 national finalists in Dewar's "Dewaristas: The Search for the Next Great Latin Sound," Names You Can Trust presents their debut long-player to a worldwide audience for the first time. Led off by the lead single and official video which dropped earlier in the year on NYCT, La Paz Del Freak, the album weaves it's way around the traditional stylings of Salsa & Bolero, with a heavy dose of electrico, incorporating a blend of Peruvian guitars & experimental synths, sounds and textures. They've been praised for their live performances and recordings alike, receiving endorsments and spins from notables such as Juanes, Quantic, Gilles Peterson & Bobbito to name a few.

The 9-track album of original compositions was recorded between NYC & Peru, written by band-leader Efrain Rozas and co-produced alongside Xuxi Lazzaro (Rita Indiana) & Manuel Garcia Orozco. Feautring a melting pot of musicians from New York, Colombia, Peru & Venezuela, as well as the core 8-piece ensemble that performs live, this debut album serves as a welcome connection between the roots, rhythms, and future possibilities of Tropical music and culture.

Ray Lugo & The Boogaloo Destroyers - El Ritmo De Nueva York

Ray Lugo's mind is very fertile, and he's been rather prolific over the last decade, putting out a variety of groovy sounds ranging from organic to electronic, afrobeat to soul, Latin to Brazilian and many different sorts of mashup/fusions in between. But just because he is creatively fecund doesn't mean the quality suffers - each album is hand-crafted and Ray takes his time to shape and mold it to just the right proportions.

So when Ray told me he had some new music he was working on, I didn't know what to expect, but I knew it was going to be sabroso, whatever the ingredients. Turned out it was his second Latin soul record with The Boogaloo Destroyers, and destroy the dance floor is just what they will do when you put this record on the Hi-Fi.

The Boogaloo Destroyers' sound is inspired by the warmth, diversity, and youthful spirit of classic New York Latin Boogaloo of the 1960s, yet at the same time, as composer and lead vocalist, Ray feels he is bringing some of his afrobeat sensibilities and vocal personality to the proceedings. When I asked him to talk about the songs, he offered some entertaining insights:

El Ritmo De Nueva York: "I wanted to feature some real descarga tunes as we lacked those on the first album. Also wanted to show NYC pride!" Let Me Tell Ya 'Bout The Boogaloo: I was thinking of a couple going uptown for a night of dancing"

I want to leave you, the listener, with this thought Ray shared with me recently: In a hyper difficult music environment Ray has had the great fortune to bring so many of his concepts to life, and he feels this new boogaloo album has come at the perfect time in his career. Now is a time in his life when he's never been more comfortable making music, and he feels blessed to be finding himself constantly amazed by people's kind consideration of his work. After they hear this one, I can assure you Ray, the deal will be sealed!

Conjunto Papa Upa - Vintage Voudou / Camuri Chico

the label take a deep breath and say" During the 1970's, in the ever changing musical world, there was a tendency for the use of tape echos, analogue delays and overall experimentation that was integrated through many genre's across every continent. Latin America was no exception.

All across the sub-continent, young people started to pick up electric guitars and combo organs and started to form
their own heavily influenced bands in the guise of the Beatles or the Rolling Stones. Seeking new horizons, they started to not only fine tune their mainstream pop and rock idols music that saturated the commercial airwaves but cleverly injected a healthy dose of the music that was largely overlooked but that was played in the local streets.

That's how Colombia got its Champeta, Peru got its Chicha and Brazil its Tropicalia.

In oil rich 1970's Venezuela however, this phenomenon never quite took hold despite all the ingredients being
within grasp of its many creative musicians. With a rich polyrhythmic and instrumentally diverse African musical
heritage to lean on and a vibrant, young, middle class being able to out muscle their neighboring counterparts
financially, musical 'take off' was close except for one very important yet decisive factor. A record industry with a minimum level of intuition. Fast forward to 2013 and the times they are a changing. Driven by the historical frustrations of the aforementioned and subsequent decades, Venezuelan born music priest Alex Figueira has decided to 'take the bull by the horns' and fill the historical gap of generations past. Alongside

Baldomero Verdú, a master in Afro-Venezuelan
drumming who has played with some of the true heavy weights on that scene such as Uno Solo Pueblo and La Parranda de Miriam, Conjunto Papa Upa bring into our lives this fabulous, double sided, never to be forgotten release.

Debut album 'Batuk Freak' by Brazillian hip-hop, rap crossover artist, Karol Conka.

The album is produced by Nave, the man behind the beats for such Brazilian rap greats as Emicida (MTV Iggy call's him 'the Brazilian Jay Z') and multi-award winner Marcelo D2.

Karol has gained national recognition and status with a nomination at the 2011 Brazilian MTV Awards for the video of her soul influenced single 'Good Night' as well as performing internationally with Brazil's hip hop legend, Marcelo D2 on numerous occasions.

The album is a mix of rap, hip-hop, and electronic funk. Elsewhere in the world it is known as baile funk, which refers not to the music, but to the actual parties where the music is played. The genre is an authentic expression of low-income communities and sexual freedom in Brazilian society. In London, Mr Bongo Records produced a baile funk compilation with artist Tetine, entitled 'Slum Dunk Presents Funk Carioca mixed by Tetine.'

'Corre, Corre Ere' was the first track to come from this electronic Brazilian beats album, which presents the sound of Karol Conka. First time sang live, the audience begged for more.
