REPRESS OF 2003 LUAKA BOP CLASSIC ALBUM

Moreno, Kassin and Domenico were childhood friends from school. They formed a band and made three albums, each one under a different one's name. Their records are different and very influential in Brazil. Morneo is the son of legendary Brazilian musician Caetano Veloso. You can hear him at age 8 on the first Luaka Bop release ( Beleza Tropical') singing the words Ilê Ayê' on Caetano's song of the same name.

Moreno's record is to some extent the most conventional of the three, even though Domenico, the drummer, plays drums on a sampler and cymbal sounds using sand paper. The next release, Domenico's, had the greatest success in the indie world, while Kassin's album is the most produced (which makes sense as he has become one of the most successful producers in Brazil).

Taggy Matcher & Kumbia Boruka - Cumbia Locura

Taggy Matcher (aka Bruno Patchworks' Hovart) is back with another musical trip, always knocking where you don't expect him to. For this new single, the French Reggae producer has teamed up with the uprising Cumbia combo, Kumbia Boruka, for a scorching track inspired by Dillinger's legendary Reggae single, Cocaine in My Brain:Kumbia Boruka is a band led by Hernan Cortes, a percussionist and singer born in Monterrey, capital of the Cumbia music. After playing and touring with some of the biggest Cumbia's artists, such as Celso Pina, he founded the six piece combo few years ago in Lyon and is currently touring and presenting their first EP, La Vida se Vive.As a major figure of the music scene in Lyon, Bruno Patchworks' Hovart was immediately seduced by Hernan voice and style. It ended in this perfect collaboration and meeting, between Jamaican vibes and Mexican melodies, now presented by Stix Records on a vinyl 7inch.

Orkesta Mendoza - Vamos A Guarachar!

Something is stirring in downtown Tucson. That's no great surprise perhaps: Calexico have been sending out missives from the desert for 20 years now, Giant Sand for even longer than that, and the Green on Red revival is surely overdue. Let us remind ourselves that this isn't a big city in the American sense, but that its hinterland is indeed as big as it gets. For an hour south, Mexico starts. And this is where things get interesting.

Born in Nogales, Arizona, raised in Nogales, Sonora, multi-instrumentalist and band-leader Sergio Mendoza grew up listening to the Mexican regional styles jostling for headspace in a young, music-mad mind - cumbia mainly, but mambo, rancheras and mariachi too. The border is always a fierce arena of exchange, both commercial and cultural, and so there was American music too. At one point 'rock and roll, the classics', as Mendoza himself deadpans, seemed to win out and he stopped playing those 'Latin styles' for a good decade and a half.

The return to those sounds was a strong one in 2012's Mambo Mexicano, co-produced by Mendoza and Joey Burns of Calexico - a band for which Mendoza has become an increasingly integral touring and recording member. While that record had a studied air, tentative in parts (as befits the renewal of an old love affair), ¡Vamos A Guarachar! is another beast entirely: by turns raucous ('Cumbia Volcadora', featuring Mexican electronic pioneer Camilo Lara), tender ('Misterio', surely Salvador Duran's finest moment with the band so far) and plain serious fun, as in 'Contra La Marea' and 'Mapache', it also bears a robust electronic edge, a keen pop sensibility and all the hallmarks of Mendoza's love of 60s rock, with the closing track, 'Shadows of the Mind', sure to be included if anyone decides to update the Nuggets collection for the 21st century. This is roundabout way of saying that it appears to have everything, but never too much of anything. Focused, fierce and beautifully executed by a superbly drilled set of musicians, it is a record that fully matches the band's explosive live performances.

You could, of course, take the trip to Tucson yourself, to the home of this essential set of field recordings. The scene hangs out together, so ... if the stars align and their frantic tour schedules permit, you might see any number of folks from Calexico, Giant Sand or up-and-coming cumbia rockers Xixa deep in conversation somewhere in town with a quiet young man in black. That's Sergio. Right now, in this endless game of Tucson tag, Orkesta Mendoza are IT.

Los Amigos Invisible - The New Sound Of The Venezuelan Gozadera

Los Amigos Invisibles (The Invisible Friends) have created the ultimate party album. Surprising segues — one after another — join non-stop grooves. Like having an incredible DJ at your house working for the mere price of a CD (or Cassette)... it flows and swings and never stops... one song/groove leads right into the next, no waiting. It feels like being smacked upside the head in a delicious way.
The New Sound of the Venezuelan Gozadera is a journey deep into the pants of rhythm. (We won't even mention the old sound of the Venezuelan Gozadera). Party music hasn't sounded this chic since Chic. The Gozadera, more than a musical style, is a concept allowing us to use whatever music we enjoy and mix it up,' says guitarist Jose Luis Pardo. Like boogaloo, salsa, bossa nova, funk, disco, house, techno, jungle, merengue, New Wave, cha-cha-cha, mambo, and of course Acid Jazz.' And who better to pull this off than producer Andres Levin (Aterciopelados, Chaka Khan, La Portuaria, La Secta, El Gran Silencio, David Byrne, Arto Lindsay, and many more) along with engineer Fernando Aponte (Masters at Work, Ryuichi Sakamoto, Deee-Lite, Towa Tei)

  • 5: All Cats Are Grey
  • 6: No One Is Receiving

  • 9: Loneliness
  • 10: La Pluie Et Le Beau Temps

Bossa Nova = Nouvelle Vague = New Wave.
This transliteration was the starting point for Marc Collin and Olivier Libaux's unique project, which, by appropriating the punk and post-punk cannon and running it through the Bossa Nova filter, reinvented the cover band genre, revealing new and brilliant talents along the way: Camille, Phoebe Killdeer (whose Fade Out Lines was remixed by The Avener,) Nadeah, Mélanie Pain, and, soon, Liset Alea. The gambit paid off, with sales of over one million records over four albums released between 2004 and 2010, and world tours that included stops at venues such as London's Royal Albert Hall, L.A.'s Hollywood Bowl and Paris' Olympia. Since 2011, Nouvelle Vague had stopped recording, focusing on an innovative live show created in collaboration with the mythical Jean-Charles de Castelbajac (Ceremony and Dawn of innocence,) and branching out into different projects: Olivier's Uncovered Queen of the Stone Age, and Marc's Bristol, along with his Kwaidan label. The time seems right to write a new chapter in the Nouvelle Vague saga: with a new album I Could Be Happy' and live show, the band and its coterie of female vocalists continue their time travels with a renewed alegria. Nouvelle vague by Nouvelle Vague and Some Friends is thus more of a nexus of forthcoming projects: a new album comprised of punk and post punk standards imbued with the inimitable Nouvelle Vague touch, and, for the first time, a bevy of surprising Collin/Libaux which prove that the two producers are more than prodigious arrangers. This album is also the opportunity to gather again the pioneer singers of Nouvelle Vague: Élodie Frégé, Mélanie Pain, Liset Alea, Nadeah and to find other guests as Camille or Clara Luciani. A worldwide tour is already confirmed and announced. It will begin in Europe and Asia, in the fall, and will continue through South America and the U.S.A. in the new year, and feature the entire crew on stage, around Marc and Olivier: Mélanie Pain, Élodie Frégé, and Liset Alea.

I think the album's a goddam classic,' Ry Cooder said afer producing Buenos Hermanos, the second solo album by the Buena Vista Social Club singing star Ibrahim Ferrer.
Released in 2003 when Ferrer was 76 years old, Buenos Hermanos now gets a welcome reissue on 180 gsm vinyl and today sounds more like a 'classic' than ever - the ultmate Latn record', as Cooder described it at the tme. I don't think anybody other than Ibrahim would or could make a record like this.
It has every kind of nuance and subtlety that it could possibly have, as well as muscle,' he added. Like the original Buena Vista Social Club release and his 1999 solo debut, Buena Vista Social Club presents Ibrahim Ferrer, the album boasted the same producton team of Cooder, Nick Gold and engineer Jerry Boys and confrmed Ferrer's place among the all-tme great voices of Cuban music. Ferrer was to die two years later, leaving Buenos Hermanos as the boldest achievement of his long
career. Firmly rooted in traditon, at the same tme the album expanded the horizons of Cuban music in new and excitng directons. Combining both Cuban and American musicians, the hand-picked core band, comprised Orlando 'Cachaíto' López on bass, Manuel Galbán on electric guitar, piano and organ, Chucho Valdés on piano, and Miguel 'Angá' Díaz on congas augmented by Ry Cooder on guitars and veteran rock drummer Jim Keltner and Joachim Cooder on percussion.

Collecting Stan Getz's Two Groundbreaking 1962 Bossa Nova Albums!

2LP-set from Vinyl Passion collecting Stan Getz's two 1962 bossa nova classics, Jazz Samba with Charlie Byrd and Big Band Bossa Nova. Jazz Samba is the first true bossa nova album by jazz artists, the one that began the wave. The name Stan Getz can easily be tied to bossa nova whenever the music is being discussed in jazz circles but would audiences have ever known of bossa nova if not for Charlie Byrd The sessions for Jazz Samba were arranged only after Byrd played records he'd gotten in Brazil for Getz. The results: a groundbreaking No. 1 album and a document of jazz history. It's follow-up Big Band Bossa Nova rode that wave, topping out at No. 13 on the Billboard album chart in 1963 in the wake of the success of Jazz Samba (1962) and prior to the release of Getz/Gilberto (1964). Sandwiched as it is between the two landmark albums of the era, it sometimes gets unfairly overlooked.

Mr Bongo
04.11.2016

Krishnanda is an album in the truest sense of the word - a spiritual, psychedelic Brazilian masterpiece from start to fnish - celebrated by everyone from Seu Jorge and Kassin to Floatng Points, Madlib and DJ Nuts. These days, originals change hands for thousands of dollars. Pedro dos Santos, born in Rio in 1919, was a percussionist virtuoso, composer and inventor of instru-
ments that apparently included oddites such as the 'Tamba' (electrifed bamboo drum) and the mouth berimbau whistle. Nicknamed Perdo 'Sorongo' afer the rhythm he invented, that features throughout 'Krishnanda'. A highly spiritual man who was regarded as a philosopher by many. He worked with greats including Baden Powell, Elis Regina, Maria Bethany, Elza Soares, Sebastão Tapajós, Roberto Ribeiro, Milton Nascimento, Clara Nunes, Paul Simon and Arthur Verocai, playing on
his legendary self-ttled LP. In the same vein as Verocai and his self-ttled LP, 'Krishnanda' was Pedro's chance to shine with his own, and only, solo recording. Krishnanda was produced by Hélcio Milito, the drummer of Tamba Trio, and arranged by conductor Joppa Lins, and originally released in 1968 on CBS (Brasil). Musically, the album touches folk, samba,
afro-brazilian and psychedelia plus added efects, with a lyrical depth and diversity to match; themes including morality, percepton, existence and ego. Despite the genius of the record and the infuence that it had on musicians at the tme of release, it
disappeared into obscurity. We frst discovered the record around 2003, through a friend Julio Dui. Around that tme Brazilian funk and bossa was the favour of the day, so didn't catch our ear immediately, however it contnued improve with age and now we consider it to be one of the best albums ever made, regardless of genre or origin.

Nelda Pina Y La Boa - Giumbele

Massive 11-piece Latin American Afrobeat combo Nelda Piña y La Boa have been exploring the vast rhythms of West African music and its many branches within their home base country of Colombia for the last 3 years. Influenced by the contrasting sounds and traditions of Colombia's disparate Atlantic & Pacific coast cultures, they bring a unique twist to the familiar Afrobeat lineup that is accentuated by their cantadora Nelda Piña, a singer from the Bolivar region who was born in the 1940s. Once again, Colombia and its deep reservoir of modern and traditional musicians prove the awesome alchemy of melding the sounds and aesthetics of old and young generations.

This special release on the Names You Can Trust label takes that concept one step further as the single track on hand, Giumbele, sees Nelda hand off the lead vocals to Cali-native Nidia Gongora, a renowned singer in the worldwide Tropical music community whose hypnotic voice has already been heard on numerous records in collaboration with producer Quantic. Led by the glide of Nidia's lush lead, the result of this tune is a mid-tempo stunner that combines the airy timbres of the marimba de chonta with the powerful backdrop of the mighty brass section. In true NYCT fashion, the exclusive B-Side Instrumental mix proves a useful and unique rendition of the tune that goes deeper into a slow-motion, dark Cosmic Tropical motif, perfect for the selectors and the late-night dancers alike.

Names You Can Trust
01.08.2016

Malphino is a mysterious band from an imaginative tropical island of the same name that plays cumbia and a heady mix of exotic sounds. Their music serves as a cinematic score to the backdrop of this mystical isle and its ethos.

The musicians of Malphino reinterpret the traditional banda, playing organ, accordion, tuba, and an array of percussion and rhythms from all corners of the world. Their unique take on the style is no doubt influenced by their diverse membership. Malphino is a gathering of nationalities whose members hail from Japan, Malaysia, Colombia, France, UK and the Philippines, and are based in London. This central idea of multiculturalism is the foundation for Malphino's conceptual music project.

Their first US-based single from Names You Can Trust features a pair of original tunes that dives deeper into the island's mythology. LALANGO, a folkloric tune about the ancient volcano and national holy mountain on Malphino, is delivered in a fantastic live cumbia rebajada style, a slow motion explosion of sound, adept to be broadcast from either the top of the mountain or in the valleys of the sonidero street corridors. REBUBLICA FEDERAL DE MAPLHINO, a song about one of the many local productions of the island, coffee, is naturally a jolt of high-octane caffeine - a joyous and frenetic celebration to round out this quick excursion to Malphino.

GET ON DOWN
19.08.2016

BUNDLED WITH A 22'x 22' POSTER OF THE COVER ART.

Maceo Parker was one of the most revered and loved members of James Brown's famed J.B.'s band from the late '60s to the mid-1970s. Alongside his instantly-recognizable alto saxophone solos, he occasionally performed as comedian before James Brown shows, in addition to playing MC. He was a true renaissance man. And while other members of The Godfather of Soul's inner circle - most notably trombonist Fred Wesley - had solo albums at the advent of Brown's People Records, Maceo had to wait his turn for a couple years. By the time 1974 rolled around, this talented musician and personality could not be denied, and he burst onto the scene as a group leader with one of the most impressive albums in the People catalog: the simply titled, but deeply felt, Us. Maceo's group (occasionally called The Macks) and Fred Wesley's J.B.'s were essentially the same unit - including guitarists Jimmy Nolen and Hearlon Cheese' Martin, drummer John Jabo' Starks, saxophonist St. Clair Pinckney and of course Fred Wesley on trombone. Unsurprisingly, the material here is never-endingly funky. But as shown in the song selection (presumably by Parker, with heavy-handy assistance from the Godfather himself), there are as many ballads and soul groovers as there are straight-up funk workouts. Cases in point include the mellow, Gamble & Huff-penned Drowning In The Sea Of Love' (with organ, most likely played by James Brown, slithering in the background) and the syrupy Show and Tell.' The album's closer is also on the slower side, going very deep and striking a chord, as Maceo and Brown talk about conditions in the Black American landscape of the day over the course of 10-plus minutes. And there is, of course, plenty of diesel funk here as well: singles like Soul Power 74' and Parrty' are downright nasty grooves, known well by James Brown fans old and new. Soul Power 74' additionally features very early proto-sampling, with a baby's cry as well as Martin Luther King Jr.'s famous I Have Been To The Mountain Top' speech. And Maceo's take on the J.B.'s classic Doing It To Death' is a unique version, more muted and of course featuring Maceo's gorgeous horn front and center. Appearing at the apex of both James Brown's and People Records' power, Us is a treasured jewel in the J.B. catalog, and rightfully so. This 150 gram vinyl LP comes in a Stoughton Jacket, housed in a custom People Records poly bag, and includes 24' x 24' poster.

The Meters - Struttin'

The Meters

Struttin'

12inchMOVLP1991
Music On Vinyl
06.10.2017

There is funk, and there is Funk. This here is of course the latter. Struttin' is the third studio album by the funk group The Meters, originally released in 1970. The first single was the song Chicken Strut'. It reached #11 on the U.S. R&B Singles chart.

It may not appear to be drastically different than its predecessors, at least not on the surface. After all, the title of the lead single Chicken Strut' intentionally recalls their previous biggest Cissy Strut,'and it has the same basic Meters groove.

And if the essential sound remains unchanged, that's because that organic, earthy funk is The Meters' signature.

Other groups have tried to replicate it, but nobody ever played it better.

It was on this album The Meters introduced vocals to their style as well, with Art Neville's leads on covers of Ty Hunter's soulful uptown shuffle Darling, Darling, Darling,' Jimmy Webb's groovy ballad Wichita Lineman,' and Lee Dorsey's Ride Your Pony' (the Meters provided support on the original recording).

The Cuban singer Ibrahim Ferrer emerged as perhaps the most popular star of the Buena Vista Social Club ™ phenomenon. World Circuit is proud to announce the release of his final album 'Mi Sueño' (My Dream) the project he dreamed of realising all his life - an album devoted to the most meltingly romantic of all Cuban styles - the bolero.
'Mi Sueño' is an intimate arranged by Roberto Fonseca, the remarkable young pianist with whom he had developed a deep musical understanding. Recorded in Havana in 2004, the year before he died, with a wonderful small group that included Manuel Galbán on guitar and Cachaíto López on bass, the album is a very personal take on the bolero style - deeply traditional and at the same time startlingly modern. Full of passion and tenderness but still with an inimitable and irrepressible swing, Ibrahim sculpts familiar songs into fresh and atmospheric creations that are uniquely his own.
As Ibrahim said, I have just one thing left to tell you all. We dream together and we will keep doing it. If my days ended tomorrow I would leave very satisfied in having achieved my wish, the wish was that dream: to sing a bolero.'
A labour of love and the realisation of a dream, 'Mi Sueño' presents Ibrahim Ferrer as one of the world's great bolero singers - the way he always wanted to be remembered.

Various - Rough Guide To Brazilian Jazz
  • 1: Fernando Moura & Ary Dias: Mexidão
  • 2: Höröya: Mansa Fela
  • 3: Goma-Laca Feat. Karina Buhr: Minervina
  • 4: Tássia Reis: Meu Rapjazz
  • 5: Thiago Franca: Um Samba Para John Coltrane
  • 6: Nomade Orquestra: Samurai
  • 7: Iconili: O Rei De Tupanga
  • 8: Dom Salvador Sextet: Gafieira

Mention Brazilian jazz to most music fans and the inevitable bossa nova images flood into view: the beach, the female whisper-vocal, the rimshot snare drumming, the chord-plucked acoustic guitar, possibly a little mutedbatucada percussion, breathy alto saxophone and cabaret-vamp piano. It's an image ineluctably stuck in the 1960s, when most aspiring Brazilian musicians looked to America's West Coast 'cool jazz' scene for inspiration, listening to artists such as the Modern Jazz Quartet, Chet Baker, Paul Winter, Jimmy Giuffre and Stan Getz.
Of course there were Brazilian jazz musicians in the 1960s whose work was highly original and owed little or nothing to bossa nova, obvious examples being Victor Assis Brasil and Dom Salvador, the only two 'old-school' players present in this compilation - their presence I hope demonstrating the continuity of Brazilian jazz explorations way beyond bossa-jazz. There were also artists drawing inspiration from native Indian, regional folkloric and liturgical sources: Hermeto Pascoal and Egberto Gismonti made (and still make) thrilling and bizarre jazz that owed nothing to 'conventional' Brazilian jazz, or indeed 'conventional' jazz of any kind.
Brazil's millennial musicians, however, use a different palette from that which has gone before. Disillusioned with the vapidity of manufactured national pop - pagode, axé, lambada, brega and the rest - they started digging for rare soul, funk, reggae and hip hop records for inspiration, an entry-point to the Blue Note and soul-jazz classics of America's east coast, as well as richer meat - Sun Ra, Roland Kirk, Pharaoh Sanders and afrobeat. They also started listening more to European jazz: a fascinating 'full-circle' effect, because earl twentieth century choro jazz was strongly influenced by European music in template if not in tempo.
The large majority of players on this compilation are under 30 years old, most from São Paulo and Rio De Janeiro. Many have played with each other and are familiar with each other's work - as were Rio's 1960s bossa nova community. But the sheer range, energy and boisterousness of the approach is thrilling.
Iconili, Nomade Orquestra, Höröya and Bixiga 70 are essentially gafieira (dancehall) orchestras - with all the discipline, skill and 'listening to each other' that it implies - playing from a different songbook: a repertoire inspired by Nigeria, Guinea, Ethiopia, the Caribbean and New York. Thiago França's sharp-elbowed genius makes itself felt in his solo work as well as in the more modal Space Charanga and European fans may know Thiago from the touring combo Metá-Metá. Juçara Marçal and Karina Buhr's voicings explore similar territory to Carla Bley while Tulipa Ruiz's sparkling Roy Ayers-style jazz-funk contribution wouldn't be out of place on the 1980s London dancefloors of Dingwall's, the WAG or the Electric Ballroom.
There had to be a hip hop track - so many Brazilian millennials got into jazz via hip hop - and new teenage sensation Tassia Reis was a no-brainer.
And it's no mistake that the collection is sandwiched between contributions from young Turks Fernando Moura & Ary Dias and (for this compiler, at least) probably the most complete mainstream jazz musician that Brazil has ever produced, Victor Assis Brasil.
Innovative music is alive and kicking in millennial Brazil: although it never really left the building.

Same Speed Edits - Same Speed Sambas Part 1

Brand spanking new edits imprint Same Speed celebrate the sound of the samba in 2016 in a very unique way. Searching out the more obscure uses of Brasilian rhythms over the past 30 years or so, the boys have dug out two rare treats - one from Norway and another from California - and given them the Same Speed re-touch, aimed directly at the dance floor.

All Same Speed releases are limited, hand-stamped vinyl-only affairs, but also be on the look out for the occasional re-work of more contemporary artists, available for free download as a little treat, to pimp up your DJ sets this summer.

Kiko Navarro Feat. Amor - Isao

Isao

12inchLT062
Local Talk
08.10.2015

We had no choice but to bring back our friend Kiko Navarro after the success of the 'New Life EP' released on Local Talk earlier this year.

'Isao' is Kiko at his finest, a beautiful and hypnotic house track that has the perfect blend of afro and latin elements with a bouncy electronic edge.
There's also a mighty fine remix coming from Jose Marquez. Jose develops the vocal elements and brings in a whole orchestra of drums taking the track in a sweatier direction.

Kiko also delivers a 'KOKI dub' where he continues on the same vibe and adds strings complimented by shakers and percussions throughout the track.
