Sweet Sixteen doesn't nod at Ken Loach's movie of the same name, although the determination of its main character only reflects too well the Franco-Japanese fox's irrepressible urge to develop as an essential brand. Nearer the mark, a 'sweet sixteen' is the coming of age party celebrating a girl's sixteenth birthday in North America. And indeed for Kitsuné's co-founder Gildas Loaec, this new volume is resolutely about adolescence.

Representing the primitivism of Athens, Greece, steadily fornicating with the modern humps of the most ancient civilizations hitherto, Acid Baby Jesus has finally assembled a collection of recordings from their past two years on the rotation. The experiments on Selected Recordings were formulated while spending many of those moments on a secluded island in the Mediterranean sea, populated by a(n) (r)evolutionary cast of travelers, all starving for an heady atmosphere and a delicious salad. Many records were played on record players at these assemblages. And many songs were written, and fine tuned, and recorded. Chrissy "Zebby" Tembo, Zambia's filthiest lord of feedback & fuzz and king of their Zamrock movement, is the lone artist who made it to cover status with his song 'Trouble Maker,' summing up what ABJ has been reaching for. It's never been timelier. Or has it Every other track is an original rubbery, and stretching out further than on previous releases.

Such is the result from not setting out to record an album while you're hanging out in Heaven. Guitar lines may or may not be backwards. Conventional in their basic rock'n'roll foundation, these tracks are steeped in layers of organ, Jew's harp, bongos, gongs and a nice assortment of other instruments of the onomatopoeic persuasion. The single 'Vegetable' is a heavily percussive fuzz beater, pushing its way out of a lake of slithering psychedelic clangor and barely escaping. Selected Recordings compiles primal Anatolian dance rhythms not far off from the jungliest bounce of Bo Diddley, and produced like a quadraphonic Les Paul album played on an improperly calibrated turntable. Avoiding the echo box and lava lamp cliches of the brand of "psych" that is omnipresent on the scene today, it is safe to say that true psychedelia abounds here. "Luminous, poetic and radical", C.A.R. Is the solo project of Chloé Raunet, singer of former London coldwave band Battant. She now writes, composes and produces on her own.
Her first ep 'Laika' (remixed by Timothy J. Fairplay, Krikor and Discodeine) is cosmic pop at its best. She also collaborates: the vocals and lyrics on Gessafelstein's debut album 'Aleph' were hers and she is currently working with Ivan Smagghe, Red Axes & Manfredas on some leftfield dance-ish tracks.
 
C.A.R's first album will be released October 27th on Kill The DJ records. As a teaser, the already cult 'Idle Eyes ' will be release as digital on sept 29th, remixed by Roman Flugel, Benedikt Frey, Manfredas, Planningtorock & Rroxymore.

Earlier this year, she supported Gesaffelstein on his European tour. She's played with Planningtorock, Trans, Robolledo and has opened for Cat Power at the Paris Olympia. C.A.R.'s music has been picked up by Hermes and the Hyeres Fashion Festival, where she joined Jaakko Eino Kalveli & Chloe Howl; Vogue Magazine making a cover-mount cd of their music. As one half of Latete Atoto, C.A.R. also has a fortnightly show on London's uber-cool, ICA linked NTS Radio & plays records at the Ace Hotel.
 
Her universe is a red-hot & cold paradox, a battered dodge supercharger finding its way between clair-obscur allegories and the cold sensuality of melancholy. Electronic experiments are backed with ghostly punk bass lines, icy synths balanced on heartbeat drums. As with her almost short story-like lyrics, C.A.R's music sits on her own edge, between realism and dreams, pure pop and acquired taste.

Factory Benelux presents a new deluxe 2xCD edition of Drastic Measures, Drastic Movement, the first studio album by Dutch electronic group Minny Pops, originally released in September 1979.
Formed in Amsterdam in 1978 by vocalist Wally Van Middendorp, Minny Pops took their name from the primitive Korg drum machine which propelled their austere, post-punk rhythms and provocative live performances. An early association with Factory Records in Manchester saw the band work with producer Martin Hannett, share stages with Joy Division and New Order, and become the first Dutch band to record a BBC radio session for John Peel.
Drastic Measures, Drastic Movement is their first album, originally issued on Dutch label Plurex in September 1979. An uncompromising genre classic, the 13 track album mixes hard-edged electronica with modernist noise, and shares much in common with contemporaries Cabaret Voltaire, Suicide, The Normal and early Human League. As well as an early version of Factory single Dolphins Spurt, DMDM features junk food satire MD Mania and a cover of R.U.21 by American punk band Novak.
The 9 bonus tracks on disc 1 include all 3 cuts from the debut Minny Pops EP Kojak, and a 2003 remix of Dolphins Spurt. In addition there are 12 minutes of vintage audio-visual clips of 5 songs performed at the Amsterdam Filmacademie in 1979, playable on your PC in QuickTime format.

ZZ Top and Muddy Waters vinyl sitting in a corner in front of a gleaming guitar and an old amplifier. Ladies and gentlemen, welcome to Arnaud Rebotini's lair in Montmartre, Paris.
A hulk of a man, Rebotini may look physically impressive but inside he's really a big softy who loves singing the blues and has an almost carnal attachment to his keyboards and vintage drum machines. His musical career is now divided between two projects: one uses his own name, Arnaud Rebotini, releasing instrumental electronic albums, both nostalgic and futurist, that he plays live on stage - alone - surrounded by his favourite machines. The other is Black Strobe, where he sings and plays a steamy mix of rock and electronic music heavily influenced by blues and country 'n' western. The project comes to life fully on stage with the energy of a four-person group. In September 2014, Black Strobe will release his second album, Godforsaken Roads. The record confirms Rebotini's rock sensibility and debt to the great American tradition of songwriting, with songs touching on the classic themes of the blues - the randomness of life, the very weight of existence and the strong emotions that run just below the surface (love, lust, loneliness...). He plunges into this world of the bayou, prison and the devil with real passion and the voice of crooner often compared to Iggy Pop or Nick Cave.
Godforsaken Roads contains ten new tracks, including the latest singles Going Back Home and Broken Phone Blues. The digital edition adds Boogie In Zero Gravity and The Girl From The Bayou released as singles in 2012. On the album, Rebotini also reappropriates Folsom Prison Blues, a Johnny Cash classic, once again with the aim of keeping the blues/country 'n' western flame alive (the group's first album already contained a cover version of Bo Diddley's famous track I'm A Man). This new version, entirely synth-led with not a guitar in sight, transports the song to another spacetime continuum with swathes of keyboard worthy of Tangerine Dream, perfectly resuming the spirit of Black Strobe in 2014. However, don't think that Godforsaken Roads is all retro - in fact it's bang up to date, using electronics, sometimes even of a disco slant, to give Black Strobe its futurist dimension. The album allows Arnaud Rebotini to capture the spirit of America's cowboy era and transport it to the present day with resolutely modern production, much like the spirit of the blues that seeps from the music of electro-pop idols Depeche Mode. This contemporary western feel, both melancholic and polished, came to the notice of Quentin Tarantino - who used Black Strobe's cover version of I'm A Man for the trailer of Django Unchained - and Dior, who chose the same track to advertise their perfume Eau Sauvage. By creating a link
between the past, present and future, the group's music has also appealed to Martin Scorsese (the trailer of The Wolf of Wall Street), Guy Ritchie (the soundtrack to RocknRolla) and the creators of the videogame Grand Theft Auto V (GTA). With this new album, layered and feverish, the group is back with renewed faith in the power of the blues and a passion for motivating beats.

'I am OK', reads the title of the new album by the Berlin-based producer, DJ and label-owner Oliver Koletzki. The heading0's ambiguity is, of course, deliberate: there's a deeper meaning hidden behind the humorous facade that is Chrisse Kunst's hand-drawn cover, which depicts an unadorned thirteen-year-old Oliver sporting nerd glasses and a striped jumper: I am Oliver Koletzki, raw and authentic. Because musically, on his fifth studio album, Oliver Koletzki looks towards the unaffected freshness of back in the day, and thus, consciously returns to his roots. 'I am OK' - Oliver Koletzki says modestly. In 2014, after 26 years as a musician, he clearly achieved what he set out to do. And his fifth album serves as testimony. Hypothetically he could have a bit of a rest. The energy of each new track here does emphasise, however, that he won't retire any time soon: Oliver Koletzki is just getting started.

Nearing its first birthday, Other People is celebrating the only way it knows how: Work. The label has put out new material every Sunday since it launched with last year's Trust compilation, and the culminating Work comp doesn't break that streak-consisting almost entirely of new material from Other People's artist roster, and a few remixes from some special guests. Work is not, however, an uncooked mash of music. It's sequencing is deliberate and its selection purposefully not encompassing. In fact, Work is more an album than anything else. Kicking off the affair is Soul Keita, whose roots run back to the days of Nicolas Jaar's first label, Clown & Sunset. Dave Harrington follows with a cover of the Nick Drake song 'Things Behind The Sun' with the singer Tamara. His amorphous chords flow right into the tight groove of VISUALS' 'A Pixel', produced by Nico and featuring some guitar by Dave. Darkside also pay their dues with two unreleased tracks from their Psychic sessions-'What They Say' and 'Gone Too Soon'. Putting a nail in the coffin, German pyro-techno duo Ancient Astronaut do battle with a troupe of remixers. The first comes in snarling at the hands of Powell. The second builds gently with the subtle touch of Jenilek. And last comes a deadly dub mix by Francis Harris and Gabriel Hedrick. Work paid off.

Medical Records is very proud to present the long overdue reissue of "Shoulder Voices", the seminal 1993 debut LP released by Rollerskate Skinny. Originally released on Placebo Records, (a subsidiary of Beggars Banquet), it has been long out of print and rare to find on vinyl format. Rollerskate Skinny, formed in Dublin by Ken Griffin, Jimi Shields, Ger Griffin and Stephen Murray in early 1992, released two 10" vinyl only EP's, "Novice" and "Trophy", prior to the release of Shoulder Voices. Novice was included in NME's Top Ten New Band releases for 1992 while Trophy received Single of Week in the NME. The band's name was taken from The Catcher In The Rye ("She's quite skinny, like me, but nice skinny, roller-skate skinny."). The album, co-produced by Guy Fixsen (Laika), received many accolades upon release including (CMJ Magazine Album of the Month). The band toured with many great bands of the time including Pavement, the Flaming Lips and Mercury Rev. Hard to characterize, Shoulder Voices is a true masterpiece, featuring elements of severely catchy pop, heavily distorted guitar and keyboard sounds, weird experimental passages and other unclassifiable styles. Over the years, and with revived interest in the early 90's sound, this record is becoming increasingly popular with a new cult following, joining the legions of fans who were obsessed with it the first time round. The opening track "Miss Leader" is typical of the journey the record takes; it starts off with a jangly pop sensibility before a wall of guitars tears the sweet mood apart. "Violence To Violence", one of the albums most striking tracks, explodes with jagged guitar hooks while alternating noisy and ethereal passages share space, evenly, with super catchy melodies and lyrics. This reissue will certainly appeal to fans of the experimental pop era that was the early 90s. Features a bonus insert containing interview with Jimi Shields and Rollerskate Skinny retrospective written by Sean Kirkpatrick. Presented on high-quality 180gram heavyweight red vinyl.

It was written by the multi-talented Anthony Newley (who also wrote hits such as 'Feeling Good', 'Goldfinger', the 'Willy Wonka' soundtrack music etc), maybe for a pop release, but possibly - bearing in mind the kinky nature of the lyrics - for an experimental British TV show he was working on at the time. Unusually he wanted some electronic backgrounds for his words, and so called in the help of Delia Derbyshire, moonlighting from the BBC Radiophonic Workshop. They met at her flat in Maida Vale to discuss the project and he commissioned her. Legend has it that Joan and Jackie Collins gave Newley a lift there and were waiting outside for him in the car (Joan went on to marry Newley). By the time the tracks were finally completed Newley was already on his way to the USA for further acting and songwriting commitments, and the track has remained in his archive ever since.

One listen to 'Moogies Bloogies' and you can tell this is classic Newley, with his hooky lyrics burying themselves deep in your brain, and his delivery demonstrating clearly his strong influence on artists such as David Bowie and Damon Albarn. Also, you hear how superbly Delia's sound compliments his delivery. It's a work of double genius. To be slightly clearer on Newley's influences, he used the rare East End slang term 'Bloogies' which means 'off colour, not quite feeling yourself'.

According to Martin Guy at WikiDelia, Derbyshire's 'Moogies Bloogies' backing originates from simple sine tones, and 'Delia spent 64½ hours working on this piece every day from the 2nd to the 11th of August 1966 including a single monster session of 16½ hours on the 9th and a "radical rethink" on the night of Wednesday 10th'. The music was also played out once (we assume without the lyrics and without Newley) at one of the Unit Delta Plus legendary concert events.

Apparently Derbyshire was originally not too pleased with the musical results, but came to love 'Moogies Bloogies' later in her life.


We can't escape the fact that that this unique recording is the result of a most extraordinary and wholly unexpected collaboration, a bizarre blip in the history of both these fascinating and important artists; it's the first we know of Delia collaborating for a pop idea. And the first time we know of Newley working with electronics. Thanks to this first ever pressing they can begin a whole new trip into the minds of musical collectors everywhere.

The release is scheduled for 6th October. Both digital and physical will be issued on that day. As both artists have strong fan-bases we will be attempting to get the record in the top 100 for that week. It would be the first time Derbyshire makes it to the charts. And about time too.

Stian Gjevik (EOD,CN), passionate and curious about electronic music, found in a Trondheim thrift store a tape of the norwegian legendary project : the educational music "Sports/Tools". He contacted one of the two composers called Dildrian Schrodinger. He has managed to negociate with him a deal for a vinyl license with WeMe records. We can find in this project ordered by the norwegian state all an experimentation work with electronic machines from the 1980's. It is sometimes accompanied by a clumsy singing quite modern at that time.

Incredible double A sided reissue on tiny early eighties New York imprint Small Axe. Side A features the awesome boogie funk of 'Throwdown' by Larry Harris, a phat floor-filling monster which always changes hands for big bucks in auctions. On the flip we get another in-demand bomb - The Sparkles' 'Trying To Get Over', a superb soulful disco groover with great vocals and synth hooks. Originally released way back in '81 and produced by The Strikers' Darryl Gibbs, this killer cut still remains a firm favourite of many in the know disco DJs. Top stuff!

The album was recorded at Wolf Tone Studios in London, and produced by frontman Dave Bayley under executive production of Paul Epworth. The 11 track record features the singles Gooey and Pools plus a reworking of previous limited EP release, Black Mambo.

Created in Epworth's own studio it is undoubtedly among this year's most striking debuts. Inspired by Kanye West and Charles Darwin, Nina Simone and the Velvet Underground, ZABA is a rich and textured work, a very special record indeed. With Dave producing and Epworth as A&R and mentor, the studio became their home and the band were free to record, improvise and write at their own speed and so their sound has become a bigger, brighter, heavier and more intense experience than ever before.

'I used to be really into super-clean, no flaws production,' says Dave, 'but now I like the context and soul that mistakes, chopped samples, and swirly white amp-noises give you.... We definitely were a bit self-conscious, we were once afraid to do something bold. Now when we re together in the studio we don t worry about those things. In fact, we don t worry about anything at all...'

Free Time's new 7' for Underwater Peoples pairs the saturnine 'Guess Work' with the uptempo flip 'Esoteric Tizz'. The double A-side presents a unique juxtaposition of form, a spaced-out pastoral take on the nature of love contrasted with a hectic pop exploration of what it can mean to live a double life. Free Time is Melbourne expat Dion Nania on guitar and vocals, Jonah Maurer on guitar, Mike Mimoun on drums, and Eric Harm on bass - though the 7' features original bassist Adrienne Humblet. Opener 'Esoteric Tizz' is a bursting, fast-paced ride from the start. Recorded by Jarvis Taveniere, the track features a tumultuous melodic structure reminiscent of Felt at Lawrence's most energized. Alternatively, 'Guess Work' is an atmospheric ballad highlighted by it's impressive tonal technique. Recorded by Real Estate's Martin Courtney, the song offers a full palette of corrugated timbres and warmer, aqueous hues, drawing inspiration from Kevin Ayers and Leonard Cohen. These two slices of guitar gold are the newest work since Free Time's 2013 self-titled debut (Underwater Peoples, UPLP023). Both releases feature striking artwork by Sylvia Jeffriess.
