The newest longplayer from Tio'tiá:ke/Montreal staple Cedric Noel lands with a stunning sense of surety and self. Hang Time stands as a high water mark for a songwriter who's spent the past decade quietly expanding the borders of his music. Longtime fans will recognize the fluid elements of the album’s open-ended rock formations: reflective strumming, soaring choruses, searing guitar lines, subtle bass grooves; all occasionally dissolving into pools of pure ambience. New listeners will find surprises throughout: threads of folk pop, ambient and sound collage fasten the foundations of this expressive whole. However, what’s most striking on Hang Time is Noel’s newfound sense of voice, both literal and metaphorical. Written primarily in 2017-18 during an intense period of self-reflection, this collection of songs finds Noel wrestling profoundly with his sense of identity, self and place. The album’s material was captured faithfully at The Pines, a beloved downtown Montreal studio whose doors shuttered shortly after amidst the strain of the pandemic. Noel worked closely and patiently with friend and engineer Steve Newton, ensuring the songs had the time and space needed to come fully to fruition. Hang Time features subtle rhythm work from drummer Liam O’Neill (SUUNS) and guest spots from Brigitte Naggar (Common Holly) and Tim Crabtree (Paper Beat Scissors) among others. The album opens in mid-air with ‘Comuu’, a song that implores a becoming-more while hovering triumphantly. Then follows a suite of songs (‘Headspace’, ‘Keep’, ‘Stilling’) that recall the heart-rending power of y2k-era Low, albeit with a more vigorous beat. On ‘Bass Song’, an intimate duet with musician Ella Williams (Squirrel Flower) that explores the depths of interpersonal constriction. At the crux of the album sits ‘Born’, a deceptively pleasant-sounding song that explores the confounding emotionality of adoption before fading into a distended soundfield. Throughout the back half of the album, Noel double’s down on this commitment to his genuine, proud, Black self. The most confrontational track, ‘Allies’ finds him refraining “Are you on my side?” as a trailing guitar solo interweaves a Malcolm X soundbite, eventually engulfing the composition. Glorious lead single ‘Nighttime (Skin)’ traces the artist’s sense of ancestral dissociation through to a triumphant moment of pride in self-acceptance. Throughout Hang Time, Noel finds a way to ask hard questions (both of the listener and himself) in ways that are compassionate, open and honest. The ebb and flow of tension and tenderness that moves within these tracks helps to grow the heart and redefine what Black music can be in 2021.

This collection of 12 luk thung* songs from the 1960s-70s, all produced by Surin Phaksiri, is a superb showcase of cross-genre/multi-national fertilization, with Latin, jazz, western pop, Indian and Japanese music seamlessly melding with the musical culture of Isan (northeast Thailand), which is strongly rooted in Laotian culture; indeed, the Isan language, as featured in these songs, is a form of Laotian. Esteemed producer Surin Phaksiri, an Isan icon, always strove to drive Thai music forward, with innovative techniques and open ears, introducing international elements as well as Lao influences, including the use of the khaen. Many of the singers here, all famed and respected, have Lao roots, and it is predominantly through music that the Isan Lao-Thai culture has entered the Thai national consciousness. These lovely and joyous songs are, for the most part, previously unavailable outside of Thailand; more than half are first-time reissues. The wide range of songs here includes covers of Japanese folk and pop songs, a paean to marijuana, proto-Thai funk, a ramwong-style** dance tune, a cover of a Bollywood classic, some straight-ahead luk thung, a unique Indian-style luk thung, and a gorgeous answer song to a movie hit. * Lukthung: A musical genre whose name means ‘country person’s song’ or ‘children of the field’. The name became established in the latter half of the 1960s and now has the status of a national genre of popular song unique to Thailand. The lyrics of luk thung songs deal mainly with the rural idyll, comparisons between the city and the countryside, life in the big city and current affairs. There are certain typical traits to the music, but no official musical form.

** Ramwong: A unique form of Thai dance music, fostered as a means of promoting national pride and unity. Similar to Japanese Bon Odori, participants form a circle and dance together. The term can refer to the particular style of music, or the actual dance.

RKDIA are releasing their debut album: ‘Into RKDIA’. The album was written in Zanzibar, where the duo escaped the Nordic winter for some warm inspiration.

The duo consisting of Danish Morten Schantz (synth + vocals) and Swedish-Norwegian Anton Eger (drums) are well-known names on the jazz and fusion scenes of Europe. For a while now, both have been pushing the envelope, applying jazz logic in all sorts of unconventional shapes and places, seeking out the new and unheard.

Dark Entries continues celebrating our 10 year anniversary with ‘Preservation Bias’, a compilation of lost songs and rarities from Linea Aspera out June 28th. The group formed in London in November 2011 by Ryan Ambridge (Synths/Programming) and Alison Lewis (Vocals/Synths). Within the duo, Alison writes and performs all vocal elements, while Ryan is responsible for producing, recording and mixing the electronics. We released their debut self titled album in June 2012 that was followed by a posthumous vinyl reissue of their tour cassette “II” on Weyrd Son Records in 2013. For all recordings Ryan utilizes an analog synthesizer set up: Roland SH-09, Roland Juno 6, Vermona DRM MKiii, Korg Poly 800 and Analogue Solutions Semblance. Linea Aspera's sound includes clear influences from 1980s electronic body music, synth-pop, industrial and noise. Lyrically the band incorporates the sciences of osteology, neuroscience, and anthropology weaving a new medical language around themes of desire, despair and renewal. Linea Aspera is the muscle attachment on the back of the femur and translates to 'rough line' in Latin. ‘Preservation Bias’ features all three songs from the limited ‘II’ tour cassette EP, four songs from the 2012 self-titled limited cassette EP and one song from the Desire Records 2013 compilation ‘And You Will Find Them In The Basement’. All songs have been mastered by George Horn at Fantasy Studios in Berkeley. Each LP is housed in jacket designed by Niall Greaves and includes a double-sided insert with lyrics.

Tenesha the Wordsmith, who came to the fore on On The Corner's 2018 release 'Black Noise 2084', has delivered a hard-cutting, gut-wrenching, and extremely moving spoken word album produced by Khalab that brings together different lines of black music - folkloric, jazz, and electronic dance - into an afro-futurist narrative with thunderous results.
Originally from Oakland, California, "a place where revolutionaries are born, Tenesha the Wordsmith originally began to fuse hip hop and poetry while living in Albany, New York, where she created her first collection 'Body Of Work'. Her early influences have returned with features from beatboxers and vocalists that give the album a distinctly urban hip hop vibe.

Noise in the City is a live album by the British sample pioneers The Art of Noise. Originally released 35 years after the band first played in Japan, the album contains a complete concert from Tokyo’s Nihon Seinenkan recorded in August 1986.

Highlights include “Peter Gunn”, “Legs”, “Paranoimia”, and the first-ever release of 1986 live renditions of “Eye Of A Needle” and “In The Mood”. On stage are Anne Dudley and JJ Jeczalik with Dave Bronze on bass, Simon Moreton on percussion, Paul Robinson on drums, and The Noisettes (Katie Humble, Pepe Lemer, and Linda Taylor) on vocals.
This LP was made possible when Anne Dudley, JJ Jeczalik, and Gary Langan returned to Tokyo in 2017. They found that the 1986 concert had been recorded for FM radio broadcast and music journalist Ian Peel (who wrote the liner notes and had joined the band on the 2017 tour), tracked down the original multitrack master tapes to a vault in London. The recordings were mixed in 2021 by Gary Langan. This live album beautifully represents The Art of Noise’s mid-Eighties Visible Silence tour, while also perfectly documenting one of their first concerts in Tokyo.

After releasing some unreleased material by Christopher last year (go buy this now if you dont have it), we now also present you with a reissue of a rare little boogiefunk 45 recorded at Music America Studio, Rochester, New York circa 1987. Recorded, Produced and Performed by Christopher Jay, wonky and charming is the order of the day, I rate this 45 a lot. LA-based, vocalist, producer, and songwriter Lykke Li announces the 10th Anniversary Deluxe Reissue of her seminal album Wounded Rhymes. The critically acclaimed album was produced by Bjorn Yttling and named one of the Best Albums of 2011 by The New York Times, Pitchfork, Entertainment Weekly, The Guardian, Clash, Paste, SPIN, and more. Melodic Energy Commission is a Canadian gem and an interesting branch of the Hawkwind family tree (featuring Del Delmar on electronics.) Hailing from British Columbia, their unique blend of space rock, progressive and hippie psychedelia began in 1977 as a recording-only project titled "The Melodic Energy Commission of Collected Artists."

What is the context of 'I DON'T KNOW' and the Orlowska-Polok's art 'I DON'T KNOW' is a story of the last 50 years of Polish music. Eugeniusz Polok, her husband and musical partner, composes every Aldona's song. He searches for new arrangements of some kind, all by himself. He's no copycat. He's a jazzman, who continues the tradition of Krzysztof Komeda and Jerzy Millian. And that's a high peak. Their music has flaws, sometimes it slips and yet - it's alive. HONNE have announced the release of their much-anticipated new album, ‘Let’s Just Say The World Ended A Week From Now, What Would You Do?’ – a record that toasts the start of a new era of music from one of the UK’s most inventive and original outfits.

Releasing on October 22, ‘Let’s Just Say The World Ended A Week From Now, What Would You Do?’ forms HONNE’s third studio album following critically acclaimed LPs, ‘Warm On A Cold Night’ (2016) and ‘Love Me / Love Me Not’ (2018), as well as ‘no song without you’ – a surprise 14-track mixtape released last summer.

Written throughout the course of 2020, ‘Let’s Just Say The World Ended A Week From Now, What Would You Do?’ captures HONNE in limitless full bloom – as songwriters, producers and collaborators. “In the past, we’ve limited ourselves”, HONNE explain. “We might get to a section of a song and things are getting really exciting, but we then pull ourselves back and say, ‘Can we really do that?’. Now, we’ve sidestepped the rules and done whatever we wanted to do.”

This sense of freedom permeates the tracklist, which is defined as much by its eye-catching collaborations – Khalid (‘Three Strikes’), Griff (‘Back On Top’), 88 Rising’s NIKI (‘Coming Home’) – as it is by its musicianship, shimmering pop feel and intelligent song-writing; Sam Smith (‘Back On Top’) and MNEK (‘Easy On Me’) also co-wrote songs on the album.

Bold and ambitious , ‘Let’s Just Say The World Ended A Week From Now, What Would You Do?’ brings together everything HONNE have worked towards in their career so far, while simultaneously pushing them into broad and exciting new spaces.

Energy and inspiration come from the Gwoka. From these hands which, when they are not a raised fist, pound the drums, proud of their roots and of their Guadeloupean identity.
This is where Celia Wa comes from, from all that she inherited by spending her childhood between the West Indies and France.

The first years of her life were spent discovering the musical soul of the island, letting the seven gwoka rhythms seep into her until they became an integral part of her. The following years were spent discovering reggae, salsa, jazz and the omnipresent hip hop. Music whose original source was close to her, but to which she only opened up after having travelled thousands of kilometres.

After two self-produced EPs, Wastral is the sum of these inspirations and influences. Born in the acoustic, it is under the modern and futuristic production of Victor Vagh (producer of Flavia Coelo) that the seven tracks were revealed and then sublimated. Dissipated in the vaporous arrangements, softened under the effect of the synthetic layers, the organic was meticulously covered with an electro varnish disturbed by the echoes and reverbs of the dub. Celia Wa's soaring, twirling flute grazes or stirring the groove, her lyrics reviving the memory of her island. In Creole or in English, they tell the story in the present tense without forgetting the past. A past full of the sounds of struggles, of clashing chains and cracking whips, marks that have disappeared from bodies but remain deeply rooted in families and history. New feminine signature at Heavenly Sweetness, Celia Wa draws with Wastral the map of an avant-garde stellar journey in which the musical star of Guadeloupe shines the brightest.

Music For Dreams are proud to present the sophomore LP, Together, by ambient geonauts Angophora. How to describe this Australian duo’s (consisting of Max Santilli and Jacob Fugar) sound when the comments on Bandcamp already do such a perfect job? Music for watching waves; music infused sharply with crushed ants and Eucalyptus; like climbing into one of those gaping holes in a big Mountain Ash that a possum has inhabited with a collection of mid-century synths.

I could add to the epithets: ‘soundtracks for turning off your iPhone’ or ‘new age John Fahey’ or something like that but I think you get the point. Angophora’s music is deeply in touch with nature and its correlate moods, in inspiration and in evocation.


We’ve got nine tracks of ambient pop, at times probing a sort of jazzy post-rock. Departing the electronically premised sound of their debut, Together finds its footing inmore acoustic steppes. The two central figures are the acoustic guitar (played by both) and the percussion (Max) but listen closely and you’ll hear piano, electric guitar, synths and other various bits and pieces drifting around. Guitar figures sailing through unspoiled firmaments. Shaded percussion attending reverbed washes so you can feel the wide open spaces configuring around you. Everything ebbs and flows in gentle layers. It’s balmy, meditative, not to mention totally gorgeous.

‘Angophora’ is the botanical name for the Sydney red gum tree, an emblematic piece of the distinctive East Australian nature. Both Santilli and Fugar grew up in the semi-rural outskirts of Sydney.

The connection with the natural environments of the bush fostered here is what they seek to articulate through music.

The duo first met in 2014 and started jamming in Santilli’s dad’s garage in Kenthurst. Pursuing a shared interest in electronic gear, they quickly began to incorporate synths and drum machines into sessions. A sound crystallized between them and the songs recorded during those years became their debut LP, Scenes, released in 2018 on Ken Oath Records.

By the time of that release though, they had already drifted towards a more organic sound, with a growing appreciation for acoustic instruments and Santilli picking up various ethnocultural percussion styles. This leads us to Together, the result of 4-5 years of intermittent sessions and sound work culminating in a focused stretch during 2019 in which all these works were recorded.

After the critical acclaim of Real High (2017), Gonzalez began her PhD in Musicology at UCLA in 2018. At the same time, her twelve year marriage and creative partnership with Grammy Award-winning producer Cole M.G.N. dissolved,
leaving her homeless and adrift. Though in a state of grief, her studies renewed
her focus.
Working with only a Moog sequencer and keyboard, Gonzalez improvised
along to rhythmic grooves while singing in hushed undertones, which she then
meticulously produced into a collection of intimate off-pop masterpieces. No
Sun manifests a future out of songs of sorrow, as a part of Gonzalez’s quest to
reclaim her subjectivity.
Occupying a liminal space between Arthur Russell’s whispered intimacies, Tirzah’s R&B poeticism, and Kraftwerk’s rigid electronics, No Sun traverses new
soundscapes through the eyes of an uncompromising female auteur.

RIEN VIRGULE is before everything else musically, the meeting of four people, islands of desires, tentacles that embrace each other. Or “the meeting of a soldering iron and an iceberg, a pigeon asleep in a packet of chips, a smashed path in a debaptized city” (according to J. Burgun).

For 8 years, two albums and numerous concerts, they have been peddling a generous, graceful and cold, intensely vibrating music.

In a radical and deviant approach to Pop music, the classical structures of verse-chorus serve as a playground and experimentation, where rhythmic, melodic and noisy functions merge.

In June 2019, Jean-Marc Reilla passed away. His homemade instrumentarium and laughter continue to resonate for his loved ones, and his memory lives on in the music of RIEN VIRGULE that has become a trio.

The 1980s in the West saw the widespread use of synthesized sound technology, previously largely unobtainable for amateurs because of its price.
At that time in Great Britain synthesizers - cheaper and produced in bigger batches - found their way into the hands of youth raised on punk rock. In the US, the first samplers were already being used in hip hop, Roland's mass-produced drum machines and bass synthesizers were about to target suburban adolescents, while techno and acid house were emerging.

In communist Poland - then part of the Eastern Bloc - access to electronic instruments was still a different story. They were mostly only to be found in the recording studios of the state-run radio and television, some units were imported by western diplomats or Poles working on foreign contracts, and Soviet-made instruments were brought by soldiers of the Red Army stationed in Poland.

The album titled "Echo Wielkiej Plyty" (eng. The Echoes of Plattenbau) features a number of long-forgotten or never before released recordings of electronic music created in the mid 1980s.
These are unique and characteristic of the Polish scene, yet difficult to categorise, often hovering between the world-chasing trend of 'el-music', as it was dubbed in Poland, and muzak, often reduced to merely a background role in television programmes on science and computers.

The first compilation in the catalog of The Very Polish Cut Outs label is surely an attempt to acquaint listeners all over the world with some of the less known or completely forgotten representatives of the Polish electronic music scene, who in the 80s, despite limited access to equipment, created truly fascinating and diverse compositions.

All pieces were dug up and hand-picked by Maciej Zambon and Norbert Borzym, both of whom are also responsible for Renata Lewandowska's amazing album "Dotyk", release last year.

The album's launch scheduled for mid-May will be the crowning moment of their over two year long archival work put into the compilation. This double vinyl album will be released in a limited edition of 800 copies.

Tensnakes Zeit in L.A. brachte ein exzellentes House-Pop-Album mit zahlreichen Vocal-Ohrwürmern und entspannten Instrumentals hervor.

Portico Quartet announce Monument, the electronic driven follow-up to their acclaimed ambient-minimalist suite Terrain, presenting the band at their most direct

It's rare that a band releases two albums within six months of each other, rarer too that while both are so different, they are both as epochal in terms of the band's output as Terrain and Monument are to Portico Quartet. The irony is that Monument, a stripped-back, intentionally direct album, was the album that the band set out to write in May 2020, before the dream like long-form Terrain came into focus. Briefly they were two halves of the same record, but the band ended up developing these two distinct bodies of work concurrently. And although they were written side-by-side and recorded at the same sessions, they are records best understood as distinct from each other, each with opposing ideas and forms.

Monument is one of Portico Quartet's most accessible, direct records to date. If Terrain addressed the darker side of how Duncan Bellamy and Jack Wyllie made sense of the pandemic, then Monument resonates as an ode to better times. If not quite a dance record, it nonetheless pulses with an energy, radiance and a scalpel sharp focus. Jack Wyllie explains: "It's possibly our most direct album to date. It's melodic, structured and there's an economy to it that is very efficient. There's not much searching or wastage within the music itself, it is all finalised ideas, precisely sculpted and presented as a polished artefact."

Bellamy expands "Monument sits somewhere between our albums Portico Quartet and Art in the Age of Automation. It has perhaps a more overtly electronic edge to its sound – there are more synthesisers and electronic elements than we have used before and the music is often streamlined and rhythmic".

After the ethereal, stage-setting of Opening, the album kicks into overdrive with Impressions, a short energetic track that pairs a club influenced groove with hang drum and close, delicate saxophone. It's the balance between these elements that push and pull the track through a selection of melodic and rhythmic re-configurations, contrasting human touch with a machine-like focus. Ultraviolet is a kaleidoscopic, krautrock inspired track with a haunting introduction and an insistent pulse. The wistful Ever Present builds from a simple piano refrain; a nostalgic melody line floats over the top as drums and bass groove insistently underneath, before reaching a euphoric peak. The title track Monument builds around a looping vocal sample, drums and an enigmatic melody, the ending giving way to a gauzy, weaving synth line. The power here is in its economy and luminosity. AOE flips back and forth, like a dial that's been switched. Mining the tension between a pastoral inflected cello and saxophone melody, with an abrupt shift to jilted live drums, wailing delayed saxophone and a flickering synth line. Warm Data comes straight from the same Portico Quartet tradition as older tracks like Current History and Laker-Boo. It's a marriage of instrumental minimalism with drum machines and synths. Finally, the album closes with On The Light, a track that transmits a sense of suspense and freedom, driven by the twitching drums of Bellamy and evocative sax of Wyllie. It offers the perfect bitter-sweet and evocative ending to Portico Quartet's latest Monument.

VERVEINE is a music project that began with Joell Nicolas (CH) as a composer,songwriter and vocalist. Her classical background (piano) together with a strong taste for the pop, electronic and avant-garde cultures have allowed her to build something we could name « pop of the extremes » with her machines and her voice. Her work asserts its own identity and centers around an aesthetic duality, shaped both by a cerebral quest for sensation and a more visceral quest for emotion. After a few years in Berlin and Brussels, where she gleaned her taste for sounds hybridizations, HOTDRAMA (VRVN records, Fav Art Publishing) is a her first studio album
