7"-Vinyl45L-B
45 Loves
29.04.2020

The 2nd release on 45 Loves sees a killer live disco joint with a super upfront 'Good Times' bass line driving the track along, add in sparse vocal snippets, subtle horns and spacy synths and we have an 80's jazz/funk/disco flavored jam brought right up to date.
Dancefloors were made for this, quality stuff. The flip is another fusion cut, dropping the tempo and creating an electro/disco/rap affair. Very limited

Various - Westbound Disco 2x12"

- In the beginning disco was the sound of New York's underground clubs, and only those in the know understood what was happening. One of the key figures was Tom Moulton who virtually invented the extended disco mix. Detroit's Westbound Records saw that using Tom's skills could tailor their records to the dancefloor. Westbound Disco' pays homage to this era.

- This ten-track CD and eight-track double vinyl album collects the strongest disco mixes to appear on the label. Five are by Moulton and others are by Issy Sanchez and Hippie Torales. Generally only originally available as promo 12's or within commercially released albums, they are fine demonstrations of the skills of the mixers as well as the talents of the artists.

- The music stretches from the extended soul groove of the Detroit Emeralds' 'Feel The Need', to the proto electro sounds behind the Clark Sisters' 'You Brought The Sunshine', and includes CJ & Co's 'Devil's Gun' - the first record to be played at the iconic Studio 54 - as well as obscurities by Eramus Hall and the Crowd Pleasers.

- Featuring striking sleeve art based on the range bags in which some of the 12' singles were originally housed and complete with in-depth notes, this is a must-have compilation.

Jess Glynne - Always In Between - Ltd 140g Blue Vinyl

As she continues to make UK chart history with her 7th #1 single 'I'll Be There', Jess Glynne announces her glittering new album 'Always In Between'.
It's been 3 years since the release of Jess Glynne's momentous debut album 'I Cry When I Laugh'. Selling over 2 million copies worldwide and including a mass of smash hit singles including 'Hold My Hand', 'Take My Home' and 'Don't Be So Hard On Yourself', it consolidated Jess as one of the most important British popstars and a formidable songwriter.
Celebrated for her intimate yet universally appealing themes, Jess has connected with millions of people across the globe - demonstrating her peerless ability to tell the truths young women want to hear; about the loves that build them up and let them down; the aspirations and dreams that might turn sour but you'll smile through them anyway. These themes are passionately continued in 'Always In Between'.
'Always In Between' finds Jess on a breath-taking journey of self-acceptance as she comes to terms with her new-found fame, heartbreak and the well-known pressure of writing a second album. The result is a triumph that captures the heart of what being a 28-year old woman in 2018 can feel like - trying to balance real life with everything that you want it to be. With a tone of joyful harmony and acceptance set by 'I'll Be There' already, Thursday (co-written with Ed Sheeran), explores our many insecurities and the idea that sometimes stripping everything back can make you feel most yourself, while 'All I Am' attempts to answer the niggling voice inside so many people's head asking if they are enough. There's no doubt that 'Always In Between' will capture many under its spell as Jess Glynne once again reaches out her hand, and offers love and friendship and unity to all that can hear her.

D.J. Rogers - Love Brought Me Back / Love You Forever

Two soaring love songs from DJ Rogers, 'Love Brought Me Back' backed by 'Love You Forever', remastered and reissued on South Street's new disco reissue arm. With original's trading hands for upwards of £70 it's high time a reissue dropped of these classic cuts.

'Love Brought Me Back' sweeps in first as gentle chimes and whirling winds blend with a delicate bassline and staccato strings that open up to behold Rogers' powerful prowess on the mic. Influenced and honed in the church, there's a spirituality to the delivery that few can match. An honesty and warmth resound in the arrangement with a definite dose of funk making this a sure-fire '70s soul hit that was big on the disco dancefloors.

On the B side the second of Rogers' sweet serenades, 'Love You Forever' marries clavinet chords and plucked live bass riffs with tender female harmonies, providing a perfect accompaniment to Roger's soothing tones. The ultimate end of the set song and a way to win over any hearts and minds that need to be swayed.

Two essential treasures fitting of the first reissue on South Street Disco!

R°A - SPACE MELODY EP

Mothball Record in association with Bordello A Parigi is proud to present one of the strangest and most mysterious recordings from the whole Italo-Disco era. Sitting somewhere between goth, italo and new wave, “Space Melody” is a dedication to ancient Egypt and outer space.
The original EP was almost totally lost to the sands of time, until recently the original mastertape was unearthed by the artist and later painstakingly transferred by Rude 66.

The record is completed by new instrumental versions from the Danish Italo king Flemming Dalum and the Spanish italo duo Futuro.

Symmetry - Themes For An Imaginary Film

The neon lights that decorate a dive bar's window cast a vivid reflection in rainwater on the pavement outside, as steam rises from deep beneath the ground. A slow pan across the scene, past alleys cast in shadow, twilit corners & glass doorways streaked with the mist of humid bodies fuming inside: the camera catches the denizens of an unnamed city, studying faces heavy with secrets too sad to bear. Cut to the motorway. Sleek cars barrel through the night. Sirens moan. Engines rev. You're behind the wheel, over the edge as the credits roll.

This film does not exist — but the soundtrack does. Symmetry is Johnny Jewel & Nat Walker, & Themes For an Imaginary Film is their two-hour cinematic opus pokus, a sprawling score for a movie that screens only in your mind. A 'conceptual tangent between Glass Candy, Chromatics, Mirage, & Desire's more abstract sides,' as Jewel himself describes the project, Symmetry is a vigorous, electric, restless exploration of ideas on the bleeding edge of instrumental sound. Analog synthesizers roll and crest, drums collide, keys cascade clear & crystalline. These themes evoke the phantasmic images that inspired them: urgent and ethereal, sinister & romantic. It's a neo-noir epic of pink fog & femme fatales hidden behind rain drenched windshields after dark.

Produced By Johnny Jewel & Nat Walker

THE WORD - COLLECTED WORKS

The Word is one of the better kept secrets of 1980s Austrian disco music. Yet once you put the needle on this record, you notice that it sounds oddly familiar. The awe inspiring signature piece “Lobster” has the same analogue, slow moving aesthetic as Zenit’s timeless “Waiting” that was featured on Edition Hawara’s first release. The same goes for the three other wonderfully unconventional, proto electronic songs: “Easy”, “All My Life” and the eponymous “ The Word”. And there are even more commonalities with Zenit’s LP: The vocals are Linda Sharrock’s, who here teamed up with Karl “Charly” Ratzer and Peter Ponger, the twin brother of legendary Falco producer Robert Ponger. The result of this collaboration is, well, also quite legendary. How this kind of sound emerged in Vienna in 1984 is still a bit of a mystery, but clearly all the stars were aligned when Sharrock, Ratzer and Ponger were jamming in the studio. We are very proud to share this secret with you. Just as there are very few lobsters in landlocked Vienna, there are very few records like this out there.

GET ON DOWN
17.01.2020

Sometimes a single is released that reaches such dizzying heights of success that it becomes a pinnacle of the decade they're indelibly tied to. "Groove Is In The Heart" by dance-house trio Deee-Lite is one such single. The infectiously quirky, and eminently danceable track is prominently based around samples of "Bring Down The Birds" by Herbie Hancock, and "Get Up" by Vernon Burch, among many others, (Courtesy of dual producers DJs Dmitry and Towa Tei) paired with top-tier guest contributions from JB's veterans Maceo Parker and Fred Wesley, background vocals from Parliament-Funkadelic's own Bootsy Collins, and even a guest rap from Q-Tip, not to mention frontwoman Lady Miss Kier's own siren-like vocals. All disparate and disconnected elements, but ones that would come together to form dancehall greatness, and chart-topping success worldwide for Deee-Lite. "Groove Is In The Heart" managed to reach #4 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart, but excelled at its best on the Hot Dance Club Play chart, where it reached to the #1 spot. On top of its success in America it was a smash internationally, climbing the heights of the charts in the UK, Canada, Australia, and a vareity of other countries. It remained in heavy rotation for much of 1990 on MTV as well. As the decades went on, "Groove Is In The Heart" would be ranked among the greatest dance tracks of all time, as well as one of the greatest songs of the 1990s by VH1, Pitchfork, Buzzfeed, and many more. "Groove Is In The Heart" was a potent single for Deee-Lite to lead with, but the album bearing it was nothing to slouch at either. The group's debut record, 1990's World Clique was released to major commercial and critical success, owing just as much to its addictive hybrid of seductive retro aesthetics, modern dancefloor flair, and esoteric, socially conscious messaging, on the back of celebratory club staples like "Power Of Love", "Good Beat", "E.S.P.", and of course "Groove Is In The Heart." World Clique would reach top 20 charts in the US, UK, and Canada in sales, as well as earn rave reviews from NME, Chicago Sun-Times, Rolling Stone, and Slant Magazine, who called it an "essential pop album."

12inchPR65016P
RCA
30.01.2019

Official, remastered reissue of this disco tinged, afro funk treasure and the first time the 'Karam Bani' single has been cut to 12' - maximising every ounce of highlife soul from Sidiku Buari's productions.

That undeniable US funk flavour coupled with Buari's Ghanaian rhythms bring a zest to these grooves even the tangiest of forbidden fruits couldn't draw out. Those fuzzed keys and dusty highlife guitar licks sprinkle the West African flavour, whilst drumming demi-god Bernard Purdie provides the wizardry behind the infectious, yet precision like beats that make the track so unique. Purdie's killer breaks combined with Buari's jubilant vocals give a spirituality to this cut that'll liven up any dancefloor - alongside being a gold mine for samples.

Flip it over and you're hit with the joy filled jam, 'Ye Koaba'. Tribal drums lead the way for a chorus of jubilant chants supplemented by glistening synth sounds and funk fuelled guitar riffs. It's a feel-good slice of Ghanaian sunshine, capturing that community spirit and good-hearted nature Ghana's famous for.

Two afro funk sensations sure to put a smile on your face, even when the skies are grey and you're 5000 miles away from the glorious West African coastline.

Lou Hayter - Cherry On Top

We love pop music. You’ve probably noticed. Witness our vinyl love-ins with Kylie, Róisín and Cassie if this has somehow passed you by. So when Lou Hayter (London-based musician, style-DJ to the stars, one of our besties) asked us to put her sumptuous funk-lite hit “Cherry On Top” on vinyl it felt like a neat fit. But this isn’t just any old Be With record. We decided such a monumental track would make the perfect inaugural release on Be Pop, our new, most likely sporadically active, side-label.

For those not paying attention in 2005, Lou Hayter was the keyboardist in Mercury nominated electro-pop outfit New Young Pony Club (who were a really good band, beyond the hype, and arguably a little ahead of their time) and she is currently one half of electronic duo Tomorrow’s World, a project with Air’s Jean-Benoît Dunckel. Her comeback single “Cherry On Top” originally appeared in late October 2018, but as a digital only concern. Unsurprisingly it caused a blog stir (Gorilla vs Bear correctly gushed) and what seemed like 6 Music’s entire roster of DJs had it on repeat.

But it’s not a proper single unless you can buy it in a record shop. So accordingly we’ve issued it as a full picture sleeve 12", pressed on white vinyl. And just to make certain, the instrumental and a cappella are on the flip. This is our homage to the classic dance/pop 12" singles of the late 80s and early 90s.

Riding an infectious sample of Marc Jordan’s yacht-rock classic “Generalities”, it’s a glistening, sun-soaked daydreamy jam, perfect for convertibles, pool parties, and roller-discos. It’s quite delicious. Whilst it’s pop without question, it wouldn’t be a Lou Hayter track without ice-cool nods to other magical genres; with Italo flecks and dream-pop vocals, this is cherry coloured funk indeed.

“Cherry On Top” screams “Mighty Summer Pop Radio Anthem”. We might have just missed the end of Summer 2019, but this 12" comes out just in time for every summer from now until the end of time.

Best Record Italy
03.04.2020

Project founded in Milan in 1979 by musicians producers Luciano Ninzatti, Stefano Pulga, Matteo Bonsanto and published one year later in the States by Sergio Cossa on Emergency Records. At the time when people were seen dancing on skates on the notes of "Bounce, Rock, Skate, Roll" of Vaughan Mason And Crew, "I'm Ready" by super-studio-group Kano it represented a great way to start the decade of the 80s for the Italian productions. Its famous bass-line has been sampled tons of times and the original track still sets dance floors on fire. On the flip side "Holly Dolly" it's a pioneering example of stripped down electronic synthesized disco which will become a trademark of many productions to come in those years.

Cloud One - Don't Let My Rainbow Pass Me By

Rare Cut From Cloud One Available For The First Time As A Re-Issue. A true Holy Grail from the Cloud One catalog, Don't Let My Rainbow Pass Me By' is the third of a string of titles on Golden Flamingo produced by the P&P duo of Patrick Adams and Peter Brown and featuring vocals from Guardian Angel' singer Margot Williams. Similar to previous Cloud One's productions, this record had all the
elements of a Patrick Adams classic, but with vocal arrangements that foreshadowed the work he would do with Inner Life and Jocelyn Brown at Salsoul. Perhaps not so much of a concidence then that Margot Williams would provide backing vocals on Inner Life's Second and final album. Even though it was originally released in 1981, Don't Let My Rainbow Pass Me By' is still championed by high-profile deejays today. Over the years, it's been notably sampled in Basement Jaxx's Romeo and covered by Todd Terje and Prins Thomas in Reinbagan" as a Dub-Disco cut.
Available for the first time since it's original release, our only piece of advice is don't let this classic pass you by.

Mr Floods Band / Fork In The Road - Compared To What / Can't Turn Around Now

WELCOME TO DETROIT. Or to be more precise, 14611 Nine Mile Road, East Detroit, the original home of GM Records and recording studio founded by Guido Marasco in 1968. Marasco also ran the Bumpshop label from the site, named after the car repair shop next door. A tiny third label, Love, was also part of the operation but only spawned one release, the mighty funk outing The Pusher' by Final Decisions. Marasco died in 2015 leaving behind an interesting legacy of R&B, Funk, Psych and Northern Soul that is only now enjoying the recognition that is deserves.

COMPARED TO WHAT - MR. FLOODS PARTY (GM 714)
Compared To What' was an original composition by Gene McDaniels and was first recorded by jazz musician Les McCann on his 1966 album Les McCann Plays The Hits. It is a highly regarded Vietnam protest song and has been covered by over 270 artists. Mr Floods Party recorded and released their version in Detroit in 1970 on GM 714. It was released the following year in Europe on Ember (UK), Metronome (Germany) and Melody (Greece). The Northern Soul scene adopted it as a new release at The Torch all-nighters in Stoke-on-Trent but it gained its anthemic status a few years later at Wigan Casino. It was reissued in the UK, by popular demand, in 1975 on the Bulldog label but both of the UK releases use an alternate master that lacks the energy of the original 'GM' 45 featured here on our official 2017 edition.
CAN'T TURN AROUND NOW - FORK IN THE ROAD (GM 712)
A superb, reactivated, Wigan Casino oldie originally released on GM 712 in 1970. Little is known about Fork In The Road except that the quartet, from Detroit, were clearly inspired by the Four Tops but only managed one 45, although it did see a release in the U.K. on Ember and in a picture sleeve on German Vogue. The Ember release is the rarest and is now highly collectable.

Solat - Change The World / Try, Try

It is hard to think of many 7” singles where both sides are as heavy as this one! "Change The World" & "Try, Try" were released in 1977 by 'Solat', a Dutch-based funk group made up of Surinamese and Dutch-Antillian musicians.

Formed after ex-band members of Reality/Tony And Reality; Eddy Veldman, Franky Douglas, Ivor Mitchell and Glenn Gaddum teamed up with singer Billy Jones, Solat went on to release two singles for Poker records. With it's crossover nature, it pleases disco, funk and modern-soul collectors and DJs alike, plus due to only been released in the Netherlands, the record has now become an extremely sought-after item with a high price tag to match.

Both amazing cuts are aimed straight for the dance-floor, but retain conscious and positive messages that are as relevant now as they were back then. 'Change TheWorld’ is an anthemic feelgood disco funk gem, whilst 'Try, Try ‘ is reminiscent of a Mizell Brothers golden-era production.

Mr Bongo present a replica edition with dinked centre- and original cover- and also label artwork, for all to enjoy!

In 1968, after a four-year domination by the Americans, Italian count Vincenzo Balestrieri Cosimelli of Rome, (Dec. 18, 1926 - March 31, 2012) was able to clinch the world title by winning 5 of the season's races: 1 - Sam Griffith Memorial Race, Florida, US 2 - Naples Trophy, Naples, Italy 3 - Viareggio-Bastia-Viareggio, Italy 4 - France's Dauphin D'Or, France 5 - Swedish Grand Prix, Sweden ...and by taking the second place at the Wills International Race, England. In 1970, Balestrieri repeated his feat by winning his second title of Champion of The World. Special Thanks to : Vincenzo Balestrieri Jr.

THE BOOGIE TWINS pres. HEAVEN & EARTH TROUBLE ON THE LAND - A LOVE THAT IS REAL

The Boogie Twins aka Ashley Beedle and Ray Mang have reworked and edited one of Paul 'Trouble' Anderson's biggest signature tracks.

A message from Ashley Beedle:
"My Electric Ballroom crew, that were later to become the infamous Shock Sound System, was myself, Stan Zepherin, Dean Zepherin, Paul Denton, Cecil Peters and Ricardo Da Force (R.I.P.)
We loved going to the Electric Ballroom to see the legendary Paul 'Trouble' Anderson who was killing it in there with Boogie, Electro, Hip Hop and Disco - he was such a huge musical influencer.
When he dropped 'Heaven and Earth' in the mid 80's, the joint went ballistic.

That tune ruled London and became not only a rare groove classic but remains a much loved staple of today's club scene - all because of Paul's exceptional ear for music.

The track builds and builds with a killer vocal from a soul legend. There is even a heavy drums breakdown towards the end of the track. Mashups don't get better than this.

Side B - Forever
A midtempo soul workout on the flip, perfect end of night fodder. Kazahaya takes a slept on Casablanca classic and moulds it into a heavy modern soul wonder.

11.11.2019

Hit-maker Mind Enterprises is back with a new mini album with new and previously released singles and remixes.
The release is a collection of the artist’s recent singles including the acclaimed and Shortlist Magazine’s top 50 singles of 2017 ‘Idol’, plus ‘Gemini’ and ‘S.H.A.K.E’, which together with current new track ‘Monogamy’ marks the unveiling of an electrifying new sound.
Obsessed with vintage synthesisers and 80s beats, Mind Enterprises (aka Andrea Tirone) has created a sound which is somehow both forward thinking and nostalgic at the same time. Think Italo Disco meets retro dance, with razor sharp modern production, and you’re half-way there. ‘Monogamy’, coupled with it’s 80s style VHS video is designed to make your feet move and your heart long for simpler times. Its irresistible groove and disjointed vocals are as instant as they are idiosyncratic.

Renée - Change Your Style

Change Your Style

n 1980, dutch outfit Renée came out with the album "Reaching for the sky". It`s made of delicate pop-songs, with lovely little hooks and ice cold guitars. From songs that sounds almost ABBA, to more Reggae-sounding stuff, and avant pop. In the middle of it all you`ll find Anja Nodelijks hypnotic voice.
The albums highlight is the song "Change your style", already a semi-classic on the Balearic scene. The song can probably be described as "wonky pop funk", with a twist. On the A-side you get the original. On the B-side Prins Thomas has stretched the greater parts, giving the song the length it probably deserves. Almost six minutes of bliss.
Renées "Change your style" is the second release by norwegian label Neppå. This piece of music has never been presented like this before, with the song cut over a whole side of 12" vinyl. The music is remastered, and licensed from CNR entertainment.

Second release for Neppå, Oslobased label focusing on lost and overseen recordings.
Edit by Prins Thomas, recording artist for Smalltown Supersound and labelowner of Full Pupp, Internasjonal, Rett i fletta and Prins Thomas Musikk.
