Raja Zahr - Lebanon - Cd

Raja Zahr

Lebanon - Cd

CDSHISH001CD
Orientalissimo
Release unknown

Raja Zahr is an American music producer, singer and multi instrumentalist of Arab (Lebanese) origin. Here we go with the bare facts about this: his first album in a row of five releases between 1980 and 1984. The Arab folk influence is quite obvious on each track and gets more or less expanded if the specific song takes a turn into the realms of traditional music or comes as a plain and simple yet captivating pop song with great arrangements and haunting melodies. Mr. Zahr obviously had a fondness for classical music by Ludwig Van Beethoven since his track Years passing by' is an adaption of Beethoven's trademark composition Ode an die Freude' with some Arab folk added. The lyrics are sung in Arab language as well. When I think of Miguel Ryos' adaption named Song of joy' ten years prior to this I have to pull my hat before Raja Zahr for this courageous and fascinating version. A melody from an European classic composition and rhythm patterns that belong to Arab music flow into another with ease. Music unites the world for sure. And even funk and synthesizer gimmicks in a disco fashion are familiar to Raja Zahr who is indeed a master of exciting music beyond all borders. Let it be soul, jazz, rock, Arab folk, European classics, pop and funk, whatever he touches and makes part of his sound vision works fairly well with the enchanted listener. Sometimes you may not even realize wether some folkish elements are Arab or Scottish. Sound and execution of the compositions are excellent. These folks know how to play their instruments but they do it with a nearly unearthly passion as if it was for their lives they play instead of just for entertainment reasons. No wonder original copies of this masterpiece of world music go for a few hundred $$$ if they turn up at all. Now's your chance to grab your copy if you are a true world music aficionado with a free floating mind. Enjoy!

It's tempting to concentrate on Felix's Dickinson's History, his pre criminal justice act rave orchestration, his 10 years DJing for the Lifeforce parties in Japan or any of his DJing and touring achievements during the early formation of the UK House scene. But, to concentrate on any of these things is clearly missing the point. Yes, Felix was making and playing music in those 'early days", but he has consistently championed underground music to this very day, whether via his myriad musical guises and aliases including Foolish and Sly, LHAS Inc, Das Etwas, Bastedos, and the soon to be revealed 'Dedication' project, on labels like DFA, Eskimo, Rush Hour and International Feel... or through his own Label, Cynic Music. It's Felix's absolute dedication to music, parties and dancing, which has allowed him to remain as relevant today as he ever was, and which has secured him regular appearances at festivals such as The Garden Festival, Burning Man and Glastonbury, regular tours of Japan, the USA and beyond as well as his London residencies at 'Bad Passion' and his own party, 'Bring It', which he hosts alongside the Idjut Boys. Bizarre as it seems after such a lengthy involvement spent at the heart of the scene, despite everything he's already achieved It still makes more sense to be excited about what Felix is going to next.

Chebran - French Boogie 1981-1985

6

This is France in the Mitterrand years: fashions fleet as fast as governments. In the early eighties, the happy-go-lucky gather the nectar of each and every new release.
Believing in a bright future for videotex, and loosened up by the sexy talks broadcasted on the budding pirate radios, the new generation dreams of dance floors and holiday clubs. French Boogie, which preserves the spirit of these years of boodle and bunkum, is the ideal soundtrack to their dreams.

What the web now refers to as French Boogie is some synthetic funk reflecting the spirit of those days when nothing was impossible, or so it seemed. Its syncopated flow heralded the dawning of French rap. Often considered as some kind of post-disco, inspired as much by black music as by new wave, this carefree pop music with bawdy lyrics indulged in simple pleasures: holidays, swank and sun were recurrent themes. Totally in tune with its time, it incidentally glorified luxury, success, and a certain consumerism embodied, for instance, in Bernard Tapie.

In popular clubs such as La Main Bleue in Montreuil, or L'Echappatoire in Clichy-sous-Bois - where Micky Milan could be seen behind the decks - an enthusiastic audience discovered this new sonic wave, influenced as much by French pop as by Sugar Hill Gang or Kurtis Blow. The artists who first launched the movement engaged in it wholeheartedly, but as often the case with new music trends in France, humour and casualness quickly became a decoy to impose a new style. This explosive mixture, in which startling and typically Frenchy French lyrics go along New-York-style tunes, is sometimes reminiscent of the kinky comedies directed by Max Pécas or Claude Zidi. On this prolific scene, partly originating from the Jewish community, everybody was looking for success, trying to hit the jackpot with what was to hand. Famous media personalities, one-hit wonders or John Does in quest of fame, all had a go at French Boogie - more or less successfully. Apart from « Vacances j'oublie tout » by Elégance, « Un fait divers et rien de plus » by Le Club, or « Chacun fait ce qui lui plaît » by Chagrin d'amour (produced by Patrick Bruel), very few songs became hits: the story of funk in France is that of a half-baked robbery.

In this myriad of new musicians, the very young François Feldman and Phil Barney pioneered a fresh and hybrid style. Other well-known artists like Gérard Blanc from Martin Circus (Attaché Case), Richard de Bordeaux (Ich), or Jean-Pierre Massiera (Anisette, Pirate Scratch Band, Mandrake, Scratch Man...) added an eccentric touch to this sound-wave, making it often entertaining, and sometimes showy.

Capture d'écran 2015-10-26 à 12.55.43Singers like Agathe (the author of 'La Fourmi' and of the hit song 'Je ne veux pas rentrer chez moi seule') were far more than just window dressing. They even tried to give an ironic and subversive twist to this rather harmless genre. The very vindictive rebel Gérard Vincent shared in this spirit, but as a whole, French Boogie became associated with nonchalance and sauciness. Thus, Stéphane Collaro, Gérard Jugnot, Alain Gillot Pétré and other TV clowns would clumsily contribute to this French variation on funky sounds. In a few but intense years, French Boogie gave all the tips to party with style.

If some hits made it possible for the happy few to get a real house under truly exotic palm trees, the wave actually ebbed away very quickly, leaving quite a few musicians stranded on the shore. Whether they were sincerely motivated, or simply opportunistic, they had failed. In 1984, French Boogie was already breathless, and got merged with other genres: on the one hand, rap and breakdance adapted its flow to a more urban world, especially with Sydney's show, H.I.P.H.O.P, and Dee Nasty's broadcasts on Radio Nova; on the other, italo, new beat and house began to rule over dance floors, even more strongly asserting the will to develop music for clubs.

Squeezed in between the age of disco and that of modern electronic music, French Boogie was a transitional phase, but it remains an amazingly refreshing testimony to the intermingling of pop and underground cultures. The genre was hastily categorized as anecdotal in spite of its pioneering synthetic groove and matchless bass lines. An attentive ear will discover the poetry of the ephemeral beyond the eccentricities of the genre, as well as a certain unexpected avant-gardism. At the origin of major music trends, always cheerful and catchy, French Boogie is what you need to party.

V/a - Disco Sympathie By Vidal Benjamin

For a long time, Vidal Benjamin has been getting up early at the weekends. Whether alone or in company, he digs his hands into various crates at record fairs, flea markets or in empty attics, to uncover records that have long been forgotten, ignored or even despised. Among the small circle of Parisian diggers, his reputation precedes him: it is he who finds and it is he who shares. It is not unusual that in his wake, one finds a certain record long lost, left behind as a special gift from Vidal. He likes to share so that others may discover. And it is for that same reason that he regularly sleeps late, playing records in clubs at night, where he follows a similar path: altruistic, educational and festive. It's no surprise, then, that his first compilation goes by the fitting title of Disco Sympathie.

Superb reissue of an amazing lost boogie gem from 1981 hailing from Sweden, an unlikely hub of funk excellence in the early 80s. Originally released on tiny label Newlock, both sides of this 12' are fantastic - side A's Supercool is a tight funky workout with laidback vocals and a super-summery feel while Side B's Percussion Sundance more than lives up to its cult Balearic reputation, with six minutes of blissed-out soaring synths, heavy syncopated percussion and smooth bass combining to create one of the hottest things ever to come out of Scandinavia. You must have this!

Various - Remixed With Love By Joey Negro 2x12"

Joey Negro is the most well-known pseudonym of master British DJ/producer/remixer Dave Lee. Under a plethora of other monikers including Jakatta, Akabu, Doug Willis, Raven Maize, The Sunburst Band, Sessomatto, and Z Factor, Dave was one of the first artists to incorporate disco samples in house music when he began his production career in 1988.

His discography is undoubtedly as impressive as his knowledge of seminal house and disco, and now Joey/Dave puts it to good use with this album; a revisit to some of disco's most sparkly moments.

Rather than remixes in their modern definition this is a body of re-edits with the tracks given a new dimension to make them relevant and playable now. In many cases he has changed the drums, added percussion and sometimes keyboard parts but not totally ditched the music and started again as is often the way with straight up house remixes. This project is about utilising some of those fantastic original parts in a different way hat takes advantage of many of the songs classic status subtly teasing in familiar elements and dubbing them out.

Music for Dreams
16.02.2015

Copenhagen's Music For Dreams continues to fly the flag for Balearic madness with this quality four-track EP. 'Charité' is the result of a jam session between two young Danes, Mads and Frederik, and is without doubt a future classic, with demand building strongly since its first plays on label boss Kenneth Bager's Ibiza Sonica radio show. In the style of Max Berlin (yes that good!), with French spoken vocals, Spanish guitars, floating bongos and a warm bassline, this is a real monster of a record. Legendary Balearic pioneer Phil Mison heard an early mix and his exact words were "This is good, no, this is really really good!" - don't miss. Mads Dalholt pops up again on Side B with "Balearica" a cut he made with fellow Danes Dj Zimino and Dj Djek. This does what is says on the tin - smooth and rolling bass, 70ties Hammond keys, deep and mysterious voices creating an incessant groove which meld various styles and influences in a hippie spirit. The other artist featured is Troels Hammer, a composer and piano player who delivers two short compositions "Azur" and "Birdy" both oozing that melancholic sunset vibe we love from the golden Cafe Del Mar era. Both tracks are taken from his forthcoming debut album "Troels Hammer", also to be released on Music For Dreams. Limited vinyl.

Akwassa - In The Groove

Akwassa

In The Groove

CDFP016CD
Funky Planet
Release unknown

Nigeria has been one of these African countries with a rich western oriented music scene spawning some highly praised garage rock acts like OFEGE and some hot blooded steaming funk acts. One of these groups taking a turn on music that was happening a few thousand miles west in the USA about five or six years prior was AKWASSA and here we gotta listen to their second album 'In the groove' and the title actually says it all. They play some funky music that would make James Brown (God rest his soul) or Betty Davis (Miles Davis' beautiful and highly gifted wife) go crazy for and they do it with a routine you would rather expect with American superstars. AKWASSA impress with a tight as a teenie's ass rhythm section grooving some hypnotizing beats that consist of wild percussions and an airy drumming tied together by some captivating bass lines. Upon this rhythmical basement you find a grinding organ scrubbing your senses and a clean wah wah driven guitar that erupts into fuzzed out solos from time to time. The mid ranged voice comes with a rich tone and nobody would question me if I'd tell him this was a US act. Well, okay, there is a little accent but at least his English is grammatically perfect. In the end it does not matter much for the voice is one instrument that adds a patch of color to the whole picture. How great to know this Afro Funk classic from the 70s can now be enjoyed by a young audience with an open mind. Old school funksters, take your chance, this is sheer bliss.

Alfredo De La Fe - Alfredo (cd)

Now we enter territories of smooth disco grooves and spicy samba rhythms as solid background for whipping melodies of the most charming kind. This is a lush late 70s disco production with an affinity for jazz that showcases a band lead by a truly gifted violin player. Elements of electronic dance and pop music and Latin sounds embrace each other and get tied together by sexy funky bass guitar lines. Samba, Salsa and whatever South America has to offer join forces with the Western club music of the day and in between all those fluffy but rich arrangements some freaked out piano eruptions and twisted song structures prove Alfredo De La Fe's fondness for the jazz scene aside from the mainstream. His violin turns into a screeching demon raging upon an ever flowing pulse of percussions, bass and drums. And the beat will definitely not leave you alone for the whole playing time. Alfredo's violin is the secret star of this record and he as the multicultural band leader, born in Cuba, living in the USA after 16 years in Columbia, knows to enchant and fascinate his listeners with songs that have the charm of pop and the edges great jazz offers, fused into one vivid world of sound. The deep and wide structures invite you to take a trip through a pulsating city with music, dances and happy spirits everywhere. My favorite here is the truly modernized but utterly hypnotizing 'My favorite things' I only used to know from John Coltrane before. Folks, Alfredo De La Fe might play a really smooth, happy and lightweight music but this man really pulls it off. No wonder that original pressings of this album go for 180,00 Dollars. Now we can change that with a beautiful fresh reissue and if you are a lover of Latin music, disco and funk, be welcome to lend your ears to Alfredo De La Fe.

"Love Is No Crime' has two hit-singles: 'Charlene', a song from the repertoire of Roxanne, another Tony Hendrik and Karin Hartmann artist, and, of course, the classic title track.

Volcov - Altered Soul Experiment 01

1

Limited Edition of 150 Cassettes curated by Amila & Aurelien for Altered Soul Experiment.
Recorded live by Enrico Crivellaro aka Volcov in Verona, 2015.
Artwork by Sidney Reilly & photography by Mehdi Lacoste.
Duplicated in Canada on high fidelity Chrome Plus tape.

Blending the sonic warmth with the visual nostalgia of cassette tapes, Altered Soul Experiment aims to use the medium of mix tapes to reflect the personal touch and inspiration from the music industry's early years.

Limited to 150 units per release, each artist chosen will be able to express their musical experiments via a 90 minute mix allowing a personal at-home listening experience. Furthermore the tapes will provide the avid listener a chance to search for specific tracks within each mix, translating into a unique exploratory experience.

The series starts with a warm, soul-infused mix by Volcov, which proves to be an excellent selector of boogie and soul. The mix provides a one and a half hour experience that contains a distinct narrative.

Scattered chatty voices and dancefloor-boogie move to a calm funky swish before resulting in sweet melodies that are sprinkled with emotionally charged lyrics. The mix ranges from The Controller's classic "Stay" to Hi-Tension, where David Joseph's vocals embrace you with every single "Girl I Betcha", to bangers such as the Cargo Feat. Dave Collins "Holding On For Love". All in all, it is reflecting a warm, groovey journey through time and rhythms, creating a powerful body of songs drawn in liquid smooth shapes.

Ff Yellowhand - You Want Every Night / Can You Feel It

Top quality remastered reissue on the original highly collectable US Fire-Sign Records from super funky Frenchman Francois Feldman aka FF Yellowhand. Both tracks on this in-demand 1981 boogie funk double hitter are pure dancefloor dynamite. Side A has the long mix of 'You Want Every Night', a party starting disco boogie dancer with an infectious funky groove, lush strings and a great English / French vocal. 'Can You Feel It' on the flip keeps up the pressure with more blistering upbeat percussive funk. Killer!

55 Cancri E - Belsebubs Tarar

Copehagen's Music For Dreams are very proud to present new Swedish signing 55 Cancri e (aka Sara Hausenkamp). Born in 1989 in Malmö, this talented musician/artist started out learning classical guitar as a child before playing keyboard in different bands in her teenage years/early 20s. In 2013 she moved to Berlin and began playing keyboard/guitar/singing in electro duo 'naftik'. As well as music, she also expresses herself through illustrations, collages, photos, writing, painting, fanzine-making etc. and studied at the school of Comic Art in Malmö.
'55 Cancri e' is Hausenkamp's solo project started in the summer of 2014, an amazing six track mini album of perfect night music from outer space, tunes covered in diamonds - a melting pot of sensitive guitars, crying synthesizers, barking flutes, mellow wine glasses, combined with gorgeous organ/melodica and haunting voices. The end result is a beautiful, melancholic and stunning debut drawing comparisons to artists such as This Mortal Coil and Cocteau Twins... Limited vinyl with stunning original sleeve by the artist - definitely worth investigating.

Flash & The Pan - The Balearic Sound Of

Fantastic new compilation from Sunkissed Records features four Balearic rarities from the great late 70's early 80's Dutch New Wave groovers Flash & The Pan all of which received heavy rotation at the original Ibiza parties. Kicks off with the full 12' version of one of DJ Alfredo's Amnesia anthems, the brilliant low slung 'Midnight Man' followed by the bass-driven slo-mo disco groove of 'Hole In The Middle' taken from their 1978 self titled debut LP. On the B-Side we get the hard to find disco mix of 'Waiting For A Train' a huge favourite of DJ Harvey who also featured the last track 'Walking In The Rain' on his critically acclaimed Summer Beach set mix from a few years back. Essential slices of Balearic history that still sound fresh today.

Kafka Tamura - Nothing To Everyone

Kafka Tamura

Nothing To Everyone

Lichtdicht
28.08.2015

Destroyers - Lectric Love

Destroyers

Lectric Love

12inch12D-2034
Salsoul
03.11.2014

Some low down, dirty cosmic Boogie-Funk here from 1977 on Salsoul Records.

Destroyers were a one off project from NYC whose back catalog includes only these 2 super rare and sublime examples of down-tempo space Disco. Both cuts are the perfect late night soundtrack to getting down in the darkest corners of the club, perfectly produced, super funky and with solid relentless grooves that go on and on. "Lectric Love" is an unsung classic and "Slave Of Love" on the flip is also another late night piece of sleazy action in the same vein, a perfect 12" all round!

Carefully selected from Salsouls vaults, this record has always been in heavy demand and has fetched collectors prices on-line in the past, making it extremely collectible among Disco aficionados and thus very difficult to track down. This is the first time the record has been officially re-mastered and re-issued on 12" in conjunction with Salsoul Records since it's 1977 release.

Various - Balearic Blah Blah Volume 2

Second EP of choice cuts and edits/remixes from new label Balearic Blah Blah carefully curated by KBE. First to drop is 'Swinger Sex', a superb track originally produced by Beck with Sly and Robbie on remix duties - here KBE extends the cut also adding new horns and live guitars to create a great hypnotic slow-burning 'Paradise Garage'-style killer. Next up is Compass Point gem 'Synchronize', a heavy reggae dancefloor bomb ramped up with added keys and guitars in a another effective rework from KBE. Flip over for the beautiful and haunting African track 'Pacha Men', respectfully edited here by native ibizan VH. Lastly is 'Sunda Set', a hard-to-find original from the 70s that wouldn't sound out of place in a Harvey or Jose Padilla set. Limited edition - don't sleep!
