**Vinyl Only** Following on from Austin Peralta and Ras G, we're up to the penultimate record in this small series, heading eastwards where the nomadic, industrious Machinedrum applies his spur of the moment style to the 1979 Sun Ra classic - Door of the Cosmos. A slightly different take from the previous two, but equally as experimental in its own right, his trademark frenetic psychedelic high speed beats are at work here for a truly unique interpretation of one of Sun Ra's most recognisable works. All the covers come with bespoke cover art via Stephen Serrato and photographer Simon Wald-Lasowski and this looks like their best yet.

"The Sixth Sense" was Nat Birchall's debut release. Originally recorded as a demo for his then eponymously-named five piece band, Nat was advised to make the album commercially available. Distribution being difficult to come by the CD was released in 1999 in a low key manner and although receiving a 4 star review in Jazzwise magazine the album promptly fell below the radar of most jazz fans. The album is now being made available for the first time since its original release.

Featuring on two tracks special guests Tony Kofi on baritone saxophone and David Angol on tenor saxophone, the album was recorded old-school style direct to (DAT) tape with no subsequent mixing.

It was five years ago that Sonar Kollektiv received high praise with the release of the set 'Romanian Jazz - Jazz From The Electrecord Archives 1966 - 1978'. And not only by jazz afficinados as a matter of course. Renegotiations of the licensing contracts concluded in having the compilation now finally obtainable in digital format. As an encore there are four additional tracks available out of the - Seria Jazz' by the former Communist Romanian national record company Electrecord. The 1932 founded record label is - similar to the GDR imprint Amiga - infamous for its poor quality regarding recordings as well as pressings. That's why Sonar Kollektiv (with Jürgen von Knoblauch leading the way) put time and effort into remastering all (!) the tracks featured on the compilation. At the 'Time Tools Mastering' studio in Hannover the songs were treated in order to shine in a new light and now sound much better than the outmoded communist originals. Two of the four extra tracks have been pressed on 7' vinyl. On one side there is 'Nu Privi Inapoi' by piano whiz Ion Baciu Jr. (off his Electrecord album 'Jazz' from 1977). The McCoy Tyner of the East tickles the ivories in such a sophistcated style as if the one and only John Coltrane is accompanying him. The comparison isn't flawed because next to Dan Dimitriu on bass, Nicolae Farcas on trombone and Mihai Farcas on drums, Dan Mandrila on tenor sax is actually really reminiscent of the legendary late 'Trane'. The flip side provides further evidence with 'Sonet' off Mandrila's own album 'Alter Ego' from 1980. Backed up by the same line-up as on side A (except for Marian Toroimac on drums and supplementary Radu Goldis on guitar, Costin Petrescu on percussion and Idu Barbu on synthesizer) Dan Mandrila (1938-1992) displays impressively that even without any socialist doctrine he would have been the most important saxophone player of Romania. The fusion piece 'Sonet' can easily stand up to any US production of the same age. And now

Created in 2011 by drummer and arranger Slikk Tim, DopeGems is a five
piece band dedicated to that gritty, raw instrumental sound of the 70s
music lovers, hiphop fans, DJ's and record collectors love.
That special blend of jazz, funk, and classic soundtracks, obscured by
limited releases and pressings,highly sought after by vinyl fans and rap
producers over the world... but so rarely performed live: there comes
the idea of DopeGems.
By combining vibraphone, guitar and vintage keys on top of a rock-solid
rythm section, the band is able to sound bigger than the sum of it
parts, enabling the unit to be very versatile, from searing
improvisations to heavy, deep grooves, all the way to full-on symphonic
movie charts.
And no matter what the music is, they give it their own edge with their
authentic, powerful and just plain PHAT sound while payin' attention to
every detail to truly convey the original spirit of the music they chose
to arrange.

Another dynamite R&B twin spin from Jukebox Jam - featuring 2 sides appearing on vinyl for the first time ever from the legendary New Orleans Rock & Roll star, Larry Williams. 'Love Charms' is a hot mid-tempo R&B cut with a popcorn feel. When it was recorded back in the late 50s by Larry Williams for Art Rupe's Specialty label, the song was doing the rounds as a potential hit-maker, originally written and recorded by Ray Stanley. Before Larry's version had a chance for release, however, the song rapidly appeared on singles by the likes of Sam Butera...

One of the most in demand R&B records of recent years and not for no good reason. 'If You Ain't Got No Bread' is a quirky dancer full of character and charm built around a simple but ridiculously infectious horn riff. Hamlin's vocal, drawled and laced with a humorous tone is the perfect vehicle for the smart, sharp lyrics, which tell a familiar tale of financial woe and mounting bills.
The song begins with an elongated spoken intro as first the landlord, car hire man and then girlfriend come knocking for cash. As entertaining as this undoubtedly is, it can also prove a bit of a floor killer as everyone hangs on for the song to kick in proper - which is really a crime as once it does get going, this is one of the best things you could ever offer any dance floor. As such, we've included a delicately edited version on the flip side, which jumps right into the best bit with no messing... Als Max Raabe fragte, ob sich Annette Humpe, die gerade viel um die Ohren hatte, ein zweites gemeinsames Album vorstellen, bekam er von ihr die Antwort: Für Frauen ist das kein Problem. Das Thema der neuen gemeinsam geschriebenen Songs sind die Verwicklungen der Liebe und die ganz normalen Tücken des Alltags. Liebe tut oft weh. Aber Humor macht den Schmerz erträglich. Manchester has produced some of the UK's greatest rock bands from Joy Division to the Stone Roses, but it isn't just the indie scene that thrives there, from the likes of Jon Thorne and Stuart McCallum to the Beats & Pieces Big Band and trumpeter Matthew Halsall, Manchester's jazz scene has produced some of the UK's brightest and most original jazz groups. Now with its eighth release Matthew Halsall's Manchester based Gondwana record label shines a light on another of Manchester's well kept musical secrets, the expansive, brilliant piano trio GoGo Penguin. Featuring pianist Chris Illingworth, bassist Grant Russell and drummer Rob Turner (all still in their twenties), GoGo Penguin, draw on a heady brew of influences from Aphex Twin to Brian Eno, Debussy to Shostakovich and Massive Attack to EST. GoGo Penguin who have already developed a growing cult following in the North West as well as turning in storming performances at the Gateshead International and Manchester Jazz Festival's first came to Halsall's attention when he heard them at a friends night (Norvun Devolution) at the Roadhouse in Manchester. He was immediately drawn to their sublime collective empathy and the seamless fusion of jazz, classical and electronica influences in their music. 'I was blown away the first time I heard them, for me tracks like Last Words and HF are modern anthems and I knew immediately that I wanted to release their music". Joe Bataan has always been a favourite of Jazzanova. His unique blend of latin, soul, funk and jazz is an inspiration, not only for Jazzanova. Bataan was born in 1942 to a Filippino dad and Afroamerican mother in Spanish Harlem, New York. In this vibrant melting pot of vast cultural influences he soon developped his own style and became one of the biggest star of the booming boogaloo scene. With his hits for the imprint, he helped Fania Records to become the biggest Latin label by the late 1960's and founded Salsoul Records in 1974, which he later sold to the Carye brothers. In 1982, after recording 10 albums and numerous singles, he retreated from his music career. Only in 2005 he came back with an new album and is touring since then on a regular basis. Throughout this all, Bataan's signature song has remained one of his earliest: 'Ordinary Guy,' first recorded back in 1966. An original composition, the song bespeaks Bataan's around-the-way demeanor and self-perception. For all his career highs and lows, he's remained, at the core, just an ordinary joe: 'It's been my moniker for a long time. You know, hey, I'm an ordinary guy. Don't expect anything else. I mean, that's me, and I've always been that way.' He recorded at least four versions of it over the years and is also a great entry into appreciating how he innovated the whole Latin Soul genre. The rework by Jazzanova, with newly recorded vocals by now 70-yeras old Bataan, is much more than just an update of this timeless classic. The swining back groove is a modern interpretation of 60's soul/funk that takes you back to the golden days of Motown, Stax and Fania. The fantastic drum break in the middle of the track and the kinky rhythm guitar licks as well as the lively bass (provided by Jazzanova live band members Arne Jansen and Paul Kleber) are so right on the money that probably even Booker T. & The M.G.'s wouldn't have done a better job.

Family Atlantica are to release their eponymous debut LP through Soundway Records on February 25, 2013.

Recorded over 4 years in London and Venezuela, Cuban rumba, Venezuelan tambor and tonada, Ghanaian highlife, Ethiopian blues and calypso have been soaked and infused with psychedelia and spiritual jazz.

At the heart of Family Atlantica are three people from three different continents: London born Jack Yglesias, producer, multi-instrumentalist and a veteran of The Heliocentrics, his wife Luzmira Zerpa, traditional Venezuelan musician, poet and singer with a magical voice acclaimed by Manu Chao and half Nigerian-half Ghanaian percussionist Kwame 'Natural Power' Crentsil.
Recorded while living in an abandoned vicarage in East London, the record contains three different generations of Luzmira's family as well as a cast of musicians from the wider Family Atlantic family.
One of the guests on the album, legendary Ethiopian-jazz maestro Mulatu Astatke, adds a classic touch on piano to 'Escape To The Palenque', soloing in his unmistakable flowing Ethiopian 6/8 style. Also featured on the record are Senegalese Nuru Kane and Afro-Cuban group Yoruba Andabo. Much of the record was recorded by the Heliocentrics' Malcolm Catto at their East London studio.
In 2008, Luzmira traveled to the Sahara Desert in the south of Algeria to participate in the Fi-sahara Festival. While there she performed with Manu Chao who introduced her to the audience as the most beautiful voice to arrive to the desert.

The Confusional Quartet are Enrico Serotti, Gianni Cuoghi, Lucio Ardito and Marco Bertoni, a four piece experimental band with new wave, avant-garde and post rock influences who have been recording since the late 70s. Having first released their debut album more than three decades ago, they now return with a new,
eponymously entitled full length on Hell Yeah recordings, and accompanied by fabolous artwork by Andrea Amaducci. One of the most recognized Italian bands in the so-called new wave era, the energetic group were never afraid of pioneering new sounds and performing energetic shows (often called the italian Devo), and this new album suggests they have lost
none of their edge having reformed just last year. Across the course of the 11 tracks, the band explores the fusion between synthetic sounds and real drums; fizzing guitar lines and plenty of feedback. It's funky, raw and looks to many different eras and genres all at the same time. The opener 'FuturFunk' (co-written and co-produced with Sir Bob Rifo of The Bloody Beetroots) is just that, dazzling and arresting as it goes.Elsewhere, high energy, dense and gauzy songs like 'Kursaal' rage
and writhe as drums cut in and out and guitars get worked to the max. Pilling layer upon layer of sound, each track is stuffed with contrasting surfaces before being stripped to just a jazzy drenched bassline or funked up lead. Neben ihrer Rolle als offizielle Hausband des Brooklyner Labels Dunham Records hat die Menahan Street Band bereits 2008 ein erstes Album veröffentlicht, dass nicht nur von den Kritikern bejubelt wurde sondern auch deshalb von sich reden macht, weil es so oft gesampelt wurde, wie kaum eine andere zeitgenössische Funk- oder Soul-Platte. Samples von Made The Road By Walking finden sich unter anderem in Songs von weltbekannten Kollegen wie Jay-Z, 50 Cent, Kid Cudi und vielen anderen. 2011 spielte die Band No Time For Dreaming, das Debüt-Album der Soul-Sensation Charles Bradley ein den sie auf seiner Welt-Tournee auch als Backingband begleiteten. Das Album wurde co-komponiert und produziert von MBS-Gründungsmitglied Thomas Brenneck.
»Vibe ist ein wesentlicher Bestandteil von allem, was ich mit meiner Musik anstrebe«, sagt Brenneck über den Schaffensprozess des Albums. »Vibe, Mood und Emotionalität.« Diese drei Elemente finden sich überall auf The Crossing, vom allerersten Trommelwirbel, mit der der bedrohliche Titeltrack das Album eröffnet bis zum finalen Wah-Wah-Ausbruch des abschließenden »Ivory and Blue«. Und exakt in diese Stimmung möchte ich die Hörer versetzen, wenn sie das Album hören: es soll sie im Geiste an den einen oder anderen seltsamen Ort versetzen.
Über einen Zeitraum von fast zwei Jahren aufgenommen, belegt The Crossing auf elf Songs die fruchtbare kreative Beziehung zwischen den Bandmitgliedern: Thomas Brenneck, Schlagzeuger und Gründungsmitglied Homer Steinweiss, Bassist Nick Movshon, Trompeter Dave Guy und Tenorsaxofonist Leon Michels. Die fünf Band Mitglieder musizieren seit Anfang 2000 in verschiedenen Projekten zusammen, als sie alle noch Mitglieder der Dap-Kings waren. Antibalas- Keyboarder Victor Axelrod, selbst ein ehemaliger Dap-King, spielt bei zwei Songs des Albums die Orgel, während Mike Deller von The Budos Band hinter dem Piano saß.
»Ursprünglich wollten wir mit MBS weiter nichts, als gemeinsam Musik machen, die sich außerhalb des enggesteckten Rahmens der Musik bewegte, die wir mit den Dap-Kings und Antibalas machten, und wir wollten der Tatsache Rechnung tragen, dass wir mit Hiphop und Rockmusik aufgewachsen sind«, sagt Brenneck. »Es gehört sehr viel Disziplin dazu, sich so in die Musik Fela Kutis und James Browns zu vertiefen, wie wir es mit beiden Bands taten. Genau das lieben wir daran über alles und wir haben hart daran gearbeitet, diese Musik so authentisch wie nur möglich zu spielen. Aber ich liebe auch Neil Young, The Beatles und Jimi Hendrix, und wir alle stehen auf die frühen Wu-tang-Clan- und RZA-Produktionen genau so sehr, wie auf Stax und Motown. Bei MSB können wir auch diese Einflüsse zeigen.« Der reifere und vielseitigere Sound von The Crossing ist in direkter Linie auf den Ort zurückzuführen, an dem das Album aufgenommen wurde. Das Dunham Sound Studio ist das komplett analoge Aufnahmestudio, das Brenneck und Steinweiss vor vier Jahren in Brooklyn aufgebaut haben und das mit dem Tantiemen-Scheck finanziert haben, den sie erhielten, nachdem Jay-Z für seinen Hit »Roc Boys (And the Winner is ...)« den Titeltrack ihres Debüts Make The Road By Walking gesampelt hat. Zu den Künstlern, die im Dunham Sound Studio aufgenommen und mit der Menaham Street Band gespielt haben gehören auch Mark Ronson, Rufus Wainwright, Cee-Lo Green, Theophilus London und Diane Birch.

Drones consists of the Nico Muhly's three EP's Drones & Piano, Drones & Viola and Drones & Violin, with a special
bonus composition. Performing the pieces are Bruce Brubaker, Nadia Sirota and Pekka Kuusisto along with Muhly
himself. Drones was recorded and produced by Valgeir Sigurðsson in the Greenhouse studios in Iceland.

Attack is the period of time after the initial release, it's typically the loudest part of the sound Decay is the phase while you're going from the attack to the sustain - you're 'decaying'  the volume from this sharp initial phase to the normal volume phase Sustain is the normal phase of the sound.  It is typically less volume than the attack, and go on for an indefinite period of time, or for a specific amount of time Release is the draw down from the sustain period to no sound. A fade out.
