The best relationships between singers are symbiotic yet mystical. They bear the demands of the song and revolve around what it needs without discussion. Whether it's a shared sixth sense or finely tuned intuition, no one has to ask who takes what part. It doesn't matter anyway — they are of equal importance when two voices nestle seamlessly into a melody, almost imperceptibly gliding across each other when it's time to switch. It's not a trick but a sacred dance.

Sisters Shelby Lynne and Allison Moorer, now with twenty-four albums and Grammy, Oscar, and many other kinds of awards and nominations between them, share that kind of transcendent musical bond. It's as deep, haunting, knowing, and beautiful as the Alabama woods they once called home. Both sang as soon as they could form words, but music is the only language they have ever needed to communicate with and understand each other. Not Dark Yet offers a glimpse into that understanding for the first time and finally, after years of trying to get it made, at the right time. Produced by Teddy Thompson and recorded in Los Angeles during the summer of 2016, the album provides a potent look at their individual and collective artistry through eclectic song choices from writers ranging from the Louvin Brothers, Nick Cave, Kurt Cobain, and back to Jessie Colter. Shelby and Allison wrap their arms around the past, plant their feet in the present, and nod toward what's around the bend with a co-written Is it too much,' to close out the ten-song set.

Arthur Russell epitomised the spirit that defined downtown NYC in the 70s and 80s. Yet his inability to complete projects resulted in limited output. Be With now present the reissue of Event Horizon, an album Arthur did finish with his cult group The Necessaries. Criminally neglected for 35 years, its scarcity on vinyl has caused it to evade his most diehard fans and its relative obscurity has rendered it largely unknown, even amongst Arthur acolytes.

Arthur played keys in the new wave/power pop quartet, as well as writing half the songs and contributing his inimitable vocals and avant-garde cello. Fronted by the muscular guitar of lead singer Ed Tomney, the band was rounded out by Ernie Brooks (The Modern Lovers) on bass and drummer Jesse Chamberlain (ex-Red Crayola). The record was produced by the legendary Bob Blank and featured the pulsing trombone of Peter Zummo.

Event Horizon represents the partial overhaul given to The Necessaries' first record Big Sky (1981). Renamed and relaunched in 1982, The New York Rocker described the revised LP as benefitting from "some shuffling, some trimming of deadweight and the setting of real gems in their place. The biggest plus - "More Real" - is easily the prettiest song the Zombies never wrote". That track, as well as the towering "Driving And Talking At The Same Time" (below), "Detroit Tonight", "On The Run" and "The Finish Line", came from the pen of Arthur. They are undoubtedly the best tracks on the album, wonderfully capturing Arthur's softer, more melodic approach to pop.

With an uncompromising post punk attitude, The Necessaries blended distorted guitars and loud drums with melodious, intelligent songwriting. It's weird and minimal, but it's still resolutely pop. Like much of Arthur's work, the songs are warm, shimmering and modern, catchy, hypnotic and utterly timeless. As well as handling a lot of the lead vocals, he arranged the tracks too, stripping away some of the new wave poppiness and adding his signature beautiful moodiness. It sounds like the most transcendent idea of what pop music could be.

Event Horizon should've been one of the most influential records in rock music history. Like most slept-on classics, it didn't make the immediate impact it intended to, and was forgotten by Sire and, eventually, by fans. Nevertheless, Arthur forged ahead with his solo career after abruptly quitting the band by jumping out of the van at the mouth of the Holland Tunnel in New York, while on the way to an important gig.

Whilst Event Horizon will appeal to all Arthur Russell completists, it demands further examination beyond his fans. It's long been an elusive missing piece to the lore of the downtown scene, but it won't be for much longer. Art Pop Jangle Pop Power Pop Whatever. Far ahead of its time, this is pure pop for now people.

The original, iconic artwork has been faithfully restored whilst Simon Francis' dextrous mastering adds real clarity throughout. As ever, the record has been pressed at a reassuringly weighty 180g. Additionally, the album features extensive liner notes on a printed inner sleeve by renowned writer and friend of the downtown scene Mikey IQ Jones.

The Offen Music label follows up In the Moon Cage, its collection of recordings from the archives of Sao Paolo-based, Serbia-born auteur Suba (Mitar Subotic), with something completely different but equally intriguing.
Toresch were formed last year by Detlef Weinrich, Viktoria Wehrmeister and Jan Wagner and if there's anything that links them to Suba, it's the fact that they are also cultural adventurers with fascinating back stories.
Weinrich is a resident DJ at Düsseldorf's Salon des Ameturs club, where his idiosyncratic sets were once described by Resident Advisor as 'the stuff of local legend'. He also records as Tolouse Low Trax and is a member of post-kosmische electro-acoustic band Kreidler.

Wehrmeister meanwhile is a Mexico-born sculptor and artist who also played in the band La! Neu with Klaus Dinger, the inventor of the motorik groove. Live, Weinrich and Wehrmeister are augmented by the visuals of artist Wagner, director of the Filmwerkstatt in Düsseldorf. The recordings for their debut mini-album Essen Fur Alle were enhanced by the mixing and editing of Gordon Pohl from the Kunstkopf label.

Essen Fur Alle is a work of dark industry and no little magic, sometimes sinister and austere, sometimes raw and spontaneous - playful, even - and at moments almost tender in its barbed caress. Noises surge in and out from the shadows, mysterious voices murmur disembodied messages and beats hammer and clank like the rhythms of the factory floor, as Wehrmeister declaims her mesmeric invocations and this music from the hidden reaches infects the consciousness.

Following on from their debut album 'Freedom' in 2016 here follows 'Reasons', Wangel's second longplayer with a full international release.

Wangel is a collaboration between Peter Wangel and producer Kasper Ejlerskov Leonhardt and their music revolves around Peter's characteristic, low voice and Kaspers spherical sound.

The album 'Reasons' is a collection of wonderful, emotional and very personal songs. Written and performed by Peter Wangel, the lyrics are inspired by multi award winning, temporary Norwegian writer Karl Ove Knausgrad and deal with very personal subjects from his own life.

'The previous releases were about the 'lonely' feelings; the feelings that only existed in me, the feelings I wanted to set free for a long time. The new album is about my life as it is right now; about all the thoughts, expectations, worries and the happiness that comes with a new life as a family. This is a very personal album, but I also hope to express something very ordinary and something that most people can relate to."

Also musically the album is a big step forward for Wangel, the melodies are still subtle, but offer more nuances and colors.

"We have moved to new places on this album. The song Faith is, for example, somehing very new to the Wangel universe. It has this dusty vinyl sound and goes in a 6/8 beat. The song Emotion Pill has a HipHop feel to it and is inspired by the sounds of Rihanna and Jay Z. When Peter brought the idea to the table, I was overjoyed. I have always wanted to do a Wangel song with this type of beat.' says Kasper Ejlerskov Leonhardt.

The third album by San francisco psychedelic synth wave trio BRONZE.

Bronze is Brian D. Hock, Rob Spector and Miles Friction. This trio coalesced in 2006 when Hock returned to San Francisco from Berlin after splitting with his former band The Vanishing and moved into a warehouse with Spector, who was a long time collaborator in the S.F. musik scene. Friction was enlisted shortly thereafter and the three began experimenting with synthesizers, samplers, vocals and heavy repetitive rhythm via live drums. After a european tour opening for Erase Errata and grip of singles they recorded their first album 'Copper' released on New York's 'RVNG Intl' in 2011. Numerous U.S. and European tours followed and in 2014 they released their 2nd full length 'World Arena' on Los Angeles label 'Not Not Fun' The sound of 'Bronze' is influenced by psychedelic synth musik, punk, wave, industrial and jazz, blended into a heavy cocktail of sonic witchery. 2015 will see also the release of a live album on John Dwyer's (Thee Oh Sees) Castleface Records.

'Few bands perplex like San Fran riddler trio Bronze but ever fewer have managed to hatch and hone such an obliquely singular sound. The group's third long-player, In Stone, twists and burns through eight new iterations of their classic oscillator-fusion psychedelia, inflected with shades of post-punk raga, skronk lurch, modal incantantion, deep space narcosis, lizard kingmanship, and home-wired industrial dementia. As an album, these recordings skew tenser, twitchier, a touch paranoiac, bloodshot tweakers stalking steep foggy streets. The alchemy of drummer Brian Hock, vocalist Rob Spector, and electronicist Miles Friction is always riveting in the live sphere but In Stone feels like more of a studio document, exploratory and expressionistic, full of ideas and psychic interplay. Cage Tropical, Frankie's 4th album is awash with vintage synths, painterly effects pedals, upside down atmosphere and reverberating vocals. It evokes a new wave paranormality of sorts that drifts beyond the songs themselves. "My references aren't just music," says Frankie, "I love old sci-fi. They Live is one of my favorite movies ever, same with Suspiria. 80's sci-fi movies with a John Carpenter soundtrack, with silly synths - that makes it into my file, to the point that I'll write lyrics incorporating that kind of stuff. It's in there." Beginning with the shimmery, cinematic and percussive sparkling of the album's opening track "Love in Rockets," the song's refrain of "a wheel, a wheel of wasting my life: a wheel, a wheel of wasting my time" immediately alludes to those darker circumstances that led to the creative origins of Cage Tropical. "It's all essentially based on what happened to me in Los Angeles and then a return to Brooklyn," says Frankie. "Misery turned into something good. The whole record to me is a redemption record and it is the most positive one I've made" "I feel like I am finally free from worrying about an outcome. I don't care. I already lost everything. Kelly was inducted into the ARIA Hall of Fame in 1997, alongside the Bee Gees and Graeme Bell. He has won six Country Music Awards from the Country Music Association of Australia, and four Mo Awards (Australian entertainment industry). The Lurking Fear is no longer just the title of a classic H.P. Lovecraft horror story. It now represents a new five- piece death metal band featuring some of the finest musicians to come out of Sweden. What makes this tale of musical mayhem and violence of particular interest is that it features members of long established acts such as At The Gates, Skitsystem, Disfear and God Macabre, who presumably didn't have time to invest in a project outside their respective bands. "I hit a wall," says Will Hoge. "I was doing the best touring of my career and I had a great, steady gig writing songs, but I was falling out of love with being in a band. Summoned to play it the old way in a new age, Trondheim, Norway quintet Dunbarrow draws inspiration from freezing winter nights, unpolished demo tapes from the 70's and the Swedish throwback rock from the beginning of the 21st century. The result is Norwegian proto-doom with a back-to-basics sound, from Pentagram and Witchfinder General to Quicksilver Messenger Service.
Dunbarrow's clean, unadorned sound shares the unpretentious brilliance of classic heavy progenitors playing basements and barns, before the big budgets and bloated habits diluted hard rock into an echo chamber awash in reverb and layered in distant, screeching hobbits. The band's 9-track self-titled album is a classic in the sense that every song becomes instantly recognizable after just one listen.
With lyrics like the clever paean to a young witch mother's birth of Lucifer's Child', Dunbarrow has a wealth of gloomy sentiments: Can you understand my young mother's plight / Away from the comforts that burn at the stake / She gave birth to a venomous snake / On her great pyre she smiled / For she carried Lucifer's child.'
Dunbarrow is based in the far northern Norwegian city Trondheim, but is originally from Haugesund on the west coast of Norway. The band has been playing together for over 8 years through different band names and genres. In 2014, vocalist Espen Andersen joined the band upon the departure of original singer/bassist Richard Chappell. Sondre Berge went from playing drums to playing bass. Kenneth Lønning and Eirik Øvregård are still on the guitars, with Pål Gunnar Dale taking over the drums permanently in 2016. Espen Andersen recorded and mixed the debut album at Stoy Studios. Dunbarrow is hitting the studio for their second album this summer.

Fleetwood psychonauts return with their second album of 2017. Whereas 'Zen Bastard' was a re- imagining  of ancient songs from the back catalogue, 'Ascent to Godhead' consists of brand new compositions improvised in the studio. No Hawkwind-esque generators are to be found which are synonymous with the space rock genre.

Instead we have a calamitous howl more reminiscent to the Birthday Party than to Gong. Earthling Society's unique song writing abilities remain however; where no song starts and ends the same, constantly morphing into something new. Jazz and eastern rhythms are at the forefront of 'Ascent to Godhead'. Taking inspiration from Alice Coltrane, Sun Ra, Far East Family band, Tidori Takada amongst others.

This is no hippy claptrap from the sunshine playroom, it's an album that ties your brain in knots, and oozes spiritual meaning.
 
Also included is the long lost garage rocker 'Can You Levitate' Recorded in 2009 and only unearthed earlier this year. Proving that earthling Society were belting this stuff out long before the current psych scene with it Elevators' call to arms and Butthole Surfers splashdown.





 

Greg Ashley has tracked across the States' metropolises, fringes and sticks for years now, releasing records under his own name and earlier on with black magic psych cult The Gris Gris.
Now together with the Western Playboys, you can hear the dusty technicolor Rio Grande owing in the veins of these new recordings. Many of these songs are Greg's indomitable take on waltz, country swing and golden honky-tonk songwriters like Cowboy Joe Babcock and Hank Mills, but lest we forget the cover of Estrus records' nest garage rock nihilists The Makers. This 12' EP plays out from start to nish like a band in a washed out juke joint at a desert outpost from a Barry Gifford novel - strung out, sharp-witted and never dull.
