There's something somewhat frightening, yet utterly freeing
when leaving the confines of a successful band to venture solo
- especially a band whose latest record was called effortlessly
brilliant' by critics. Such is the case with Erika Wennerstrom,
who is taking a brief vacation from her Cincinnati-based rock
band Heartless Bastards to deliver her solo debut 'Sweet
Unknown'.
However, fans of Heartless Bastards need not worry. The band
haven't broken up. We'd been going for so long and everyone
in the band was just ready for a little break. But I had songs in
me that needed to come out. I didn't think it was fair to push
them to keep going and I didn't want to do it without them
under the band name,' explains Wennerstrom, who enlisted the
help of HB's Jesse Ebaugh to play bass on most of the tracks on
'Sweet Unknown'.
While Wennerstrom has always been honest in the Heartless
Bastards songs she's written, the tracks that make up 'Sweet
Unknown' are even more personal and reflective and, for her,
quite transformative as well.
The album kicks off with the feel good road trip vibes of
'Twisted Highway', which Wennerstrom says sums up her
musical journey on 'Sweet Unknown'. On the sombre psych
rocker 'Staring Out The Window' the artist digs even deeper
into the inner workings of her mind. The upbeat and optimistic
'Letting Go' epitomizes that experience. 'Good To Be Alone' is
just one sonic outcome of a formative trip to Big Bend taken
soon after the band decided to go on hiatus.
With 'Sweet Unknown' Erika Wennerstrom bravely invites the
listener in to experience her trials and tribulations of life amidst
a cosy soundscape of deeply emotive vocals and melodies to
what is ultimately the soundtrack to her soul.

Jack White announces the release of 'Boarding House Reach' on XL Recordings, the 12-time Grammy Award-winner's third solo album and first all-new album in nearly four years.
'Boarding House Reach' sees Jack White expanding his musical palate with perhaps his most ambitious work thus far, a collection of songs that are simultaneously timeless and modern. Written and conceived while holed up in a Spartan apartment with literally no outside world distractions, White exclusively used the same kind of gear he had when he was 15 years old (a quarter-inch four-track tape recorder, a simple mixer and the most basic of instrumentation). The album explores a remarkable range of sonic terrain - crunching rock 'n' roll, electro and hard funk, proto punk, hip hop, gospel blues and even country - all remapped and

Preoccupations' songs have always worked through themes of
creation, destruction and futility and they've always done it with
singular post-punk grit. The textures are evocative. The wire is
always a live one. While that darker side may have been
expertly explored, it's not quite the same as having been fully,
intensely lived. This time it was and the result is 'New Material',
Preoccupations' deepest and most fully realized record to date.
In it lies the difference between witnessing a car crash and
crashing your own, between jumping into an ocean and starting
to swallow the water.
Opener 'Espionage' lives up to multi-instrumentalist Scott
Munro's stated goal of making a record where nobody knows
what instrument is playing EVER,' kicking off with a clattering,
rhythmic echo that gives way to sprinting percussion and a
melody straight from Joy Division's best playbook.
'Manipulation' explores the futility of going through the motions,
balancing a drony, minimal march with a thunder roll that
brings it to the brink and 'Disarray' bursts up like a blackened
confetti cannon, the song's bright melody dancing over a refrain
of disarray, disarray, disarray.'
'New Material' does offer some relief. This is somehow the
most up-tempo thing we've ever done,' says singer / bassist
Matt Flegel. In this lies the crucial point of tension, as it's that
propulsive, itchy quality that rescued 'New Material' from the
proverbial bottom of the pit.

Acclaimed Malian musician Sidi Touré returns with his fourth album, 'Toubalbero'. Named after the large traditional drum used to gather people in the Malian region of Gao, 'Toubalbero' is a danceable, dynamic and, despite the region's significant political challenges, joyous album.
'Toubalbero' is the first album by the acclaimed Songhaï legend to be recorded with electric guitar and bass - the groove is irresistible.
'Toubalbero' was recorded in Mali's legendary Studio Bogolan where Ali Farka Touré, Toumani Diabate and Björk have recorded. The album was then mixed live by Jason Meagher at Black Dirt Studio (Steve Gunn, Black Twig Pickers, Jack Rose).
Since his debut album Touré has toured extensively in both Europe and North America at prestigious venues and leading world music festivals, including New York's Lincoln Center, London's Barbican, Chicago's Millennium Park, the Vancouver Folk Festival and New York's SummerStage festival. Touré will tour the US this Spring with appearances at the Brooklyn Bowl's Festival of Mali, New Orleans Jazz Festival, and The Kennedy Center to name a few.

'Poke It With A Stick' - the only record by Louisville legends Your Food - is a sui generis gem of the American underground, now faithfully reissued for the first time by Drag City. Recorded in 1983 by four scarecrows from Kentucky subsisting largely on cheap beer and baked beans, the album is a burbling burgoo of hypnotic rhythm, uncoiling tension, and sharp invective - a proud bastard of post-punk royalty.
Slint drummer Britt Walford remembers seeing Your Food at age 11: You knew you were in the presence of something powerful whenever they played. Their sound was open and catatonic. Cathartic. You recognized it right away. A lot of it was based on
the bass, which was cool, and the drums were expressive, too. Like the bass, they were simple, but odd and insistent. The guitar was angular and somehow just as present as the bass and drums, which seemed like the center. Doug's singing went
right along with it. He was mocking and smart, then bare and vulnerable, without being vulnerable.'
In the fall of 1981, the residents of 1069, Louisville's original punk house, began to spy three teenagers lurking outside the decrepit environs. Eventually the teens grew bold enough to approach, and soon two, John Bailey and Wolf Knapp ( that's my real
name, not my punk rock name'), were learning guitar and bass in the trashed rehearsal space within. Their practices seemed interminable at first,' remembers Charles Schultz, and then picked up confidence and momentum.' Charles had been the drummer for Louisville's recently defunct Dickbrains, a band described by the Village Voice as freaky weirdos who couldn't fit in if they tried. He started playing with John and Wolf. Douglas Maxson, the Dickbrains male singer, was lured back from New York with the promise of beer and cigarettes and soon Your Food were playing weekly shows at the local Beat Club, mostly for free beer. (The third lurking teen, Janet Beveridge Bean, formed left-of-the-dial, cracked country act Freakwater with Dickbrains guitarist Catherine Irwin.)
Financed by a Pell Grant and what little cash the band could scrounge, the album was cut largely live in the studio by a guy who usually recorded church groups and self-released on the band's own Screaming Whoredog label. The prevailing themes of restlessness and isolation are palpable in songs like opener 'Leave', where ennui morphs into dark comic fantasy. The punk funk of 'Don't Be' fits perfectly with the downtown NYC groove of bands like ESG and Bush Tetras. Doug's sardonic wit laces
each song with trenchant, first-class put-downs. Everybody really wants to be your friend / Shit, I wouldn't even want to talk like you.'
The band became big brothers and bad influences for prepubescent Slint project Languid And Flaccid (which included Will Oldham's elder brother Ned). It was a golden age but a waning one, an adolescent state before hope or commercial
prospect or any plan for the future. When no one gives a damn what you are doing, you are free to do what you want.
Your Food managed three short tours in a world before cell phones, social media, or global positioning and earned the admiration of the few who heard them but they were sonically out of step with the then-dominant hardcore scene, where speed and aggression alone were valued. It all came to a spectacularly bitter end on the side of some frozen, forlorn highway in West Virginia. The tour van broke down three times in four days. The money for the planned second album went to repairs and the band, beaten and broken, called it quits.

Experimental German Rock And Electronic Music - Part A
Soul Jazz Records new 2018 edition of their long out of print classic first 'Deutsche Elektronische Musik - Experimental German Rock and Electronic Music 1972-83' is 'a near-definitive guide to some of the world's most extraordinary music' (The Guardian).
The album comes as two separate double-vinyl (+ download code) editions and a large double CD pack (+36-page booklet), featuring a stunning line-up of groups including Cluster, Can, Faust, Popol Vuh, Neu!, Amon Düül, Harmonia, La Düsseldorf and Tangerine Dream as well as a host of lesser known groups such as Kollectiv, Ibliss, Between and many more. This new edition is fully re-mastered and features all the original artwork and tracks.
The first seeds of German rock and experimental electronic music were planted in 1968, as students and workers in Paris, Prague, Mexico and throughout the world demonstrated against mainstream society, the war in Vietnam, imperialism and bourgeois values. The birth of a counter-culture, drug experimentation and social change expanded musical worlds. Germany experienced its own cultural revolution fuelled by these worldwide student and worker revolts and by a generation's desire to rid itself of the guilt of war.
German rock and experimental electronic music grew out of this worldwide counter-cultural revolution of 1968. The objectives were to create new music, 'free' from the past, many German youth turning their back on mainstream society. From the opening of the first collective/cooperative, Kommune 1, in Berlin, to the formation of the Baader-Meinhof terrorist group and the bombings, kidnappings and killings of the Revolutionary Armed Forces (RAF), young Germans sought out new values and a lifestyle outside of 'the system'.
These cooperative and communal experiences led to a number of new collective German bands forming such as Amon Düül, Faust, Can (all featured here) and others and these ideals drove this new movement. A music that gave seed out of the cultural 'nothingness' that young Germans felt as a consequence of Germany's role in the Second World War. A generation who grew up stifled by the recent history of Nazi atrocities, the guilt of their parents' generation and their disillusionment at the reintegration of old Nazis into mainstream society.
Influenced equally by the electronic experimentalism of Stockhausen, the progressive rock of Pink Floyd and the black American jazz and soul music played at the occupying armed forces bases, young German artists seamlessly created out of this a new unique music with its own unique identity.

1966's seminal Blues Breakers with Eric Clapton marked John Mayall's emergence as a major recording artist, as well as his commercial breakthrough. The 12-song LP, considered by many to be the most influential British blues album of all time, marked the official introduction of Mayall's long-running, ever-evolving combo the Bluesbreakers. Mayall shares the spotlight here with soon-to-be-superstar guitarist Eric Clapton (who quit the Yardbirds in order to pursue his blues muse with Mayall), along with future Fleetwood Mac co-founder John McVie on bass and Hughie Flint on drums. The American hardcore punk band Agnostic Front formed the side project Madball in the late 80's, when front man Roger Miret let his brother Freddy Cricien perform the lead vocals. They released their debut album called Set It Off in 1994 as a document of the hardcore music they were making by that time. The classic album features a wide range of sound effects above the groovy and doomy atmosphere of the music. The speed of the title track alternates between fast parts and mid-tempo bits and brings the focus on the ever ongoing riffs. The album also features the song Down by Law', where the heaviness of the sound is brought in the drum beats.
The vinyl release of Set It Off is available as a limited edition of 1500 numbered copies. The album is pressed on 180- gram transparent red vinyl.

By the time of their performance at the Bizarre Festival on 17th August 1996, Nick Cave and The Bad Seeds were enjoying their most successful era to date. Their latest album Murder Ballads, released in February that year, was their best-selling record yet, having topped the charts in three countries and reached the Top 10 in a further five. This was aided in no small part by Nick Cave's duet with Kylie Minogue on 'Where the Wild Roses Grow', which was a worldwide hit and earned the band two ARIA awards. The video received repeated airplay on MTV, who would later nominate Nick Cave for Best Male Artist at the MTV Awards. Nick and the Seeds toured Europe, Asia and South America in support of the album, and it is their entire performance at the Bizarre Festival that is included here. Recorded and broadcast on FM radio throughout the United States, who had curiously been left off the tour's itinerary, the group captured the dark, brooding nature of Murder Ballads perfectly in their set, which included too classics from their back catalogue such as 'The Weeping Song' and 'The Mercy Seat'. As a grand finale, the band were joined by PJ Harvey - with whom Cave was romantically linked at the time - for a rendition of 'Henry Lee'.

Shiner was a very special group. Their sound palette had a variety of colors and intensities like no other group of their generation. They linked a work ethic (learned from Jawbox and Fugazi) to a way of understanding the composition and musical interpretation that transcended post-hardcore. It was very rare (a unique case) That a band could sound like My Bloody Valentine and then like Jawbox, then like Chavez or Helmet.
They not only killed themselves everyday touring in a van but burned hours in the rehearsal room and had more effect pedals than anybody. They were more math rock than anyone else. But what's more important - they had songs. Shiner wrote memorable songs. It's easy to try and be Radiohead, but writing songs like "The Simple Truth" is a lot more complicated.
While writing these lines I happily put on the record that BCore have reissued, "The Egg", and I once again faced the albums songs. It's many the times I still get goose bumps, and I don't think it's not due to a feeling of nostalgia (in fact age often makes the things I liked before less likable). The contagious riff in "Andalusia", the epic "Bells and Whistles", the roller coaster of emotions of "The Simple Truth" (it looks like a song by Unwound's "Leaves Turn Inside You", one of the only albums I could ever compare "The Egg"), the rock feeling of "Pills", the rhythmic game in "The Truth About Cows", "The Egg" and how tension is transformed into catharsis...
"The Egg" - released in November 2001 - was the group's fourth and final album, its creative peak and one of the most ambitious albums produced by J Robbins, whose creative participation goes beyond the mere production of the album. Not only because it is a perfectly balanced piece of work at a compositional level that makes us travel thanks to its production, but because it is a record, not just a simple collection of songs. Each element has its own entity and at the same time plays a role in the set.
Experimentation and accessible melodies. Darkness and rhythmic play. Ambitious and immediate rock. Visceral and brainy. On paper it seems difficult to blend influences like MBV, Helmet or Jawbox, but the Shiner of "The Egg" were in full blast and went straight for it. And they won.

Probably the most rock' sounding of all the Pyramyd titles, Temple were an ad-hoc outfit born out of several late night sessions at Dierks Studios (where Toby was working at that time), involving local friends of Toby and other musicians from adjoining studios, among them Zeus B.
