Sharing a title with one of Paul's own paintings, Egypt Station is the first full album of all-new McCartney music since 2013's international chart-topping NEW. Preceded by two of its tracks: Plaintive ballad 'I Don't Know' and raucous stomper 'Come to Me'

Egypt Station was recorded between Los Angeles, London and Sussex, and produced (with the exception of one Ryan Tedder track) by Greg Kurstin (Adele, Beck, Foo Fighters).


Of the forthcoming album's enigmatic title, Paul says, I liked the words 'Egypt Station.' It reminded me of the 'album' albums we used to make.., Egypt Station starts off at the station on the first song and then each song is like a different station. So it gave us some idea to base all the songs around that. I think of it as a dream location that the music emanates from.'


True to the inspiration behind its title, Egypt Station's 14 songs combine to convey a unique travelogue vibe. Between the opening and closing instrumentals Station I' and Station II,' each song finds Paul capturing a place or moment before transporting the listener seamlessly to the next destination. Stops along the way include an acoustic meditation on present day contentedness ( Happy With You'), a timeless anthem that would fit on virtually any album of any McCartney era ( People Want Peace'), and an epic multi-movement closer clocking in at seven minutes with a song suite structure harkening back to the days of Paul's previous combos ( Despite Repeated Warnings'). The result is a kaleidoscopic journey through myriad musical locales and eras, yet firmly rooted in the here and now--with Paul's singular unmistakable melodic and lyrical sensibility serving as a guide.

The Lyon band's recent collaborations with Virginie Despentes and Béatrice Dalle put them in the spotlight they deserved but this is just the latest chapter of a story started when they were young more than 25 years ago by Eric Aldéa and the drummer Franck Laurino. In the Deity Guns (89-93) and Bästard (93-98) and in a handful of albums (including productions by Lee Ranaldo of Sonic Youth or Andy Briant de Tortoise*), they were simply the pioneers of post-rock in France. And yet the chapter that arrives today almost resembles the "debut album" of a young band shot through with a fiery and insatiable desire to take on the world. A complex, distressing and oppressive world which is nonetheless rich in its very confusion. "Isn't it all a bit of a mess" seems to be suggested by the title of this new album "Is not That Mayhem' and its striking post-apocalyptic graphic art. As one of the UK's most prolific and beloved bands, it has become expected - nay, the fans have demanded - that The Wave Pictures release several albums a year. This year, they are releasing two albums and they're kindly letting us know well in advance, so that we can set our calendars and save our pennies in anticipation. Starting with the spontaneous, recorded in one-day, minor-key, epic masterpiece that is Brushes with Happiness in June, the trio of Jonny Helm (drums), Dave Tattersall (guitar & vocals) and Franic Rozycki (bass), will be following up with a more up-beat party album, Look Inside Your Heart in October.

Brushes with Happiness sees The Wave Pictures in contemplative and expansive mood. Mellower and more reflective than last year's rock'n'roll surf-garage-rock collaboration with Charles Watson from Slow Club, as new band The Surfing Magazines, or 2016's blues driven Bamboo Diner in the Rain or 2015's Billy Childish produced Great Big Flamingo Burning Moon. This album is more akin to 2016's acoustic release A Season in Hull, which, like Brushes With Happiness, was recorded live in one room in a single January day.

Guitarist and songwriter Dave Tattersall explains the process of recording Brushes With Happiness, We recorded this album live in a small room to tape on one night in January, playing music into the wee hours. Listening to the album feels like being in a ceremony. It takes you to that place. This is music that emanates from one group of people in one place in space and time. Listening to it is like being let in on a secret.'

They wanted to make an album that was as spontaneous as possible, emulating the jazz, folk, blues and live albums that they love so much. As Dave explains, As music fans we treasure spontaneous recordings. When we put an album on we want to hear a little of the human spirit.'

The Wave Pictures undertook several steps in order to ensure that this was a magical album:

- Tattersall didn't write any music prior to the recording sessions, just lyrics.
The lyrics were written in advance, but the music was an improvisation, completed in one night. You can thus hear how in tune we are with one another after ten years playing together in bars.'

- Everything on record is a first take and mostly material that Jonny and Franic had never heard before and Dave had never played. None of it existed in any shape or form before they put it to tape.

- They recorded it late at night so as to be as relaxed as possible. As Dave explains, Lots of bands pretend that they have made their Tonight's The Night or Astral Weeks, that special album which is recorded in those rare, late-night, pressure-free circumstances, that loose collection of inspired jams. They haven't done it really. They've spent bloody ages working on the thing. They've lost their nerve. This is the real thing. A genuine shitfaced improvisation.'

- They got extremely high and inebriated, We wanted to get rid of any self-consciousness together,' says Dave.

- The songs are predominantly in minor key. Dave explains, I cannot help how I feel - for me this is the happiest kind of key to play in.'

For an album recorded in this way, Brushes with Happiness really does surpass all expectations. From the languid guitar licks to Dave's faltering vocals, every note oozes emotional truth. The synchronicity of the band is evident in tracks like Laces', where you can hear the very process of composition or the Django Reinhardt inspired Red Suitcase.' The Burnt Match' is the kind of song they would have tried to do many times in the past but wouldn't have been able to pull-off as they would have over-thought it. Yet in this live environment it turned out perfectly. As Dave explains, We just improvised these songs on the fly, on the spur of the moment. So you can hear them come together with a lot more vitality than they would have done in the past.'

As Dave enthuses, The way he does it seems to me to come out of the natural world, like waves crashing on rocks, rather than to come out of some school of drumming textbook.' Jamming and funking on tracks from all their classic early albums this January show in Japan is one of the best recorded documents of the band's early live sets before they completely took over the world the following year. er releasing Sizike-U Zemlji Cuda With Lost DATA Tracks LP where we issued six previously unreleased tracks of group DATA, we thought that we have done everything we could in order to bring you some great unknown music of this group. Hope that we will find more material one day was still present, but we could hardly believe it will ever happen. What a misapprehension! It turned out that old, mysterious 80's Belgrade with amazing people and their wondrous destinies has a lot more to say. We will never forget one afternoon meeting with these artists which was a starting point and a clue for the further investigation. As it happens in a fairy tales and quests for the lost treasure, after lot of wondering, finally the luck came on our side. We met Nikolaj Bezek, an important contributor for the whole 80's Belgrade scene in whose home studio Max&Intro, Sizike, DATA, Master Scratch Band made their first recordings. Nikolaj's passion for music and love and respect for his two friends - artists Zoran Jevtic and Zoran Vracevic didn't allow him to destroy their old recordings, made more than 30 years ago. It seems like he believed in them more than they believed in themselves. Digging, exploring, restoration and mastering these old recordings that came right after were pretty challenging too, but incredibly exciting. Nikolaj was with us, as he had been with Jevtic and Vracevic 30 years ago. Finally, as an outcome, the new release is born: DATA-Could You Find Your Analog Mind ,LP compilation with 12 previously unreleased tracks of group DATA made between 1981 and 1984. The record represents an important and comprehensive musical testimony of early Belgrade's electronic scene made by two pioneers Zoran Jevtic and Zoran Vracevic. It shows both Jevtic and Vracevic as pioneers of remixing and editing as well as composers of early Yugoslavian synth pop made under influence of Japanese scene!

The whole album is divided into two sides as two entities, but with distinct connection. A side reveals quite interesting set of songs and remixes made in the time when editing and remixing implied cutting and gluing magnetic tapes with no digital processing of sound and mixing. This was the time of analog sequencers, synths, rhythm machines, vocoders- quiet robust machines which were very hard to use and which generated a pretty much noise in signal processing. Programming of these gears was really complicated and if you wished to make your own sound, you had to be more into technology and science than into music. In addition, the lack of storage capacity in these early models of synths required special approach in composing and playing: you had to be extremely creative in order to make some interesting sounds! Actually, all the beauty consisted in that approach: you had to make everything from the scratch, all was yours, nobody else had exactly the same tone and whenever you wished to call it you had to be inspired! Through all six songs on A side we can find such inspiration, plenty of unique tunes, lines, melodies, patches, samples, FXs, made in moments of creative madness. Accordingly, we cannot find anything strange in the fact that all songs on A side sound as a whole, special session disengaged from usual patterns in song structuring. The whole approach in sound creating was transposed in approach to song structuring. The result is awesome: a bunch of experimential electronic with lot of amazing sounds and patches in brilliantly funny atmosphere. Creativity at its best!

B side is equally thrilling, but completely different in concept and atmosphere. Here we can find more obscure, dark and mysterious synth pop. Like many British synth pop bands in late 70s and early 80s, DATA was influenced by Japanese pioneers: Yellow Magic Orchestra and Logic System. In bringing synth pop, wave, experimental electronic genres to their own country, Vracevic and Jevtic knew that they must find their inspiration from the source, where everything began. That's the reason why their music sounds so authentic, they absorbed only influences which were undisputable- as the sounds made by brilliant minds of Roland and Korg's engineers, or in magical synth atmosphere by Takahashi, Sakamoto , Hosono, Matsutake and others. From opening track "Japon" till the last track on the B side "Secanje Na Ljubav", DATA is convincing: strong authorship with healthy influence and very intimate and poetic expression all the way through. Two Eastern Europeans dream about distant land of synth masters. Unique!

Ultimately, this record reveals the totally new ranges of early Belgrade and Yugoslavian synth pop scene. With outstanding analog remixes and yugo synth made under the influence of Japanese pioneers, it stands side by side with the most interesting archival releases of the year. Record's final touch, from transparent blue vinyl, 80s cover design technique, list of equipment, to its concept described in a title, is designed to make your journey through the world of analog electronic unforgettable.
