Somebody called it Jazz Funk House - and that fits. Crazy flute and rhodespiano solos played by Mathias Munk Modica on Kapote's heavy funk basslines and rolling drum patterns. It's house, its broken beat.
This is a pre-release to the KAPOTE ALBUM that will be released on Toy Tonics in April.
The music reminds the early 2000 West London sound of Archive Records & Seji as well as the original NYC jazz house from the Kenny Dope and Joe Claussell school. Its not far from the vibe Gilles Peterson and Bradley Zero have been spreading for years, but the music adds new elements to it. Especially the complex way Toy Tonics co-founder Mathias Munk Modica plays his solos, influenced by the school of Hard Bob and Fusion jazz makes these music special. In fact Modica has been studying Jazzpiano at the Manhattan School of Music before getting into club culture. And Kapote is a big love for the Brazilian Funk sound of the 1970ies. You can hear that.

Life And Death’s next album project finds label boss DJ Tennis work with Israeli duo Red Axes to express themselves with total freedom and explore the similarities and differences between their respective sounds. Entitled Redrago and due for release as a 2 x 12” on October 11th, the adventurous and subversive full length is preceded by one two track single release and will will also be taken on the road for a series of unique live shows.

DJ Tennis and the Red Axes duo were first introduced to each other by The Pachanga Boys at a festival in Corsica. “Their faces, their expressions and their attitude—gentle, smart, loving and funny—impressed me at first sight“ remembers Tennis. That was many years ago, and since then they have deepened their personal and musical connections, but “always by chance” says Tennis. Around a year ago, they were having a discussions and decided they should attempt to combine their “love of psy and mediterranean influences” and scheduled a week of recording sessions together.

After making at 9am and having a proper Israeli breakfast, the artists went to a studio on top of a decadent old shopping mall in the Centre of Tel Aviv. Each of them then set up in one corner of the studio with their own instrument (including Tennis’s Pearl Syncussion, a small modular setup, a Juno and bunch of guitar pedals, while Niv and Dori “used their usual weird cheap instruments including bass and guitars”) and they began playing, experimenting and jamming, recording everything they did then swapping stations and repeating the process. “It was a friendly and loving experience” say Red Axes, who add that they then took all the recordings into various editing sessions and finalised the adventurous, multi-genre exploration that is Redrago.

“The aim was to find a kind of Italian-Israeli connection in our musical approach, “ explain Red Axes. “So the album journeys from psychedelic Italo disco to Israeli trance rock with a lot of rave elements. We call it falafel disco mixed with a 1/4 of spaghetti sauce.”

The album opens with the freaky synths and punchy drums of ‘Rave ’N Roll’, which has layers of exotic instrumentation and beguiling sound design. ‘Redrago’ is a Balearic track with expansive pads and sun kissed melodies washing over you like breaking waves, while ‘Il Veliero’ is a complexly woven tapestry of intoxicating leads and drunken tabla drum sounds with a psyched-out vibe.

The soft rock licks and conversational synths of ‘The Kohlrabi Session’ make for a chugging disco groover while ‘Plastelina’ is a deep and late night cosmic exploration that continues through the star gazing ambiance and long legged drums of ‘Shalom Alanation.’ Acid squiggles and tropical vocals make ‘Ventilo’ another fantastically fresh track while ‘Phantom Rag’ closes out with a flurry of wild synth patterns, techno drums and intergalactic feels that round things out in intense fashion.

This is a freeform album that knows no musical boundaries and will appeal to lovers of everything from kosmische to ambient, techno to Balearic.

This is the first reedit release from Bassi Maestro’s “North of Loreto” project straight from Milan, Italy. On the A-side Bassi reworks a top notch Jellybean production that needs no introduction, probably the finest Whitney track to ever touch the charts, with flipped vocals and a subtle early house groove; while staying faithful to the classic song it brings new energy out of it, a certified dancefloor banger. On the B-side, Aut Of Sait is an underrated electro-funk bomb, the NoLo version extends the infectious grooves of the original 12” keeping just the essential vocal parts in the mix for a more club oriented edit, while the second track is an early 80s obscure Czech disco track chopped up and looped to make it perfect to dance to; less vocals, more bounce.

Two things become immediately clear when you hear “Body Electric”, the third original album by White Haus, João Vieira (X-Wife / Dj Kitten)’s solo project. The first is that we’re faced with an insatiable music lover, with an exemplary historical awareness. The second is that is music, although it channels all that passion, does it in such a way that is increasingly all his own. The thing is, that if on one hand, in these twelve new tracks, we’re assailed by the presence of the tutelary Talking Heads and their satellite projects, by Vivien Goldman, Sexual Harrassement or Konk’s New York No Wave, by the electronic pop of Soft Cell or New Order, by the hybrid funk of Prince and his Minneapolis accollites, by the Italo-Disco inspired by Giorgio Moroder or Patrick Cowley or the Acid House of Adonis or Maurice.

The 9th release on Omena LTD features Steve Mahon aka Embezzlement Society. With appearances on labels such as Banofee Pies, Roots For Bloom Records and Tenderpark, to name but a few, Steven is carving out his own sound, blending rhythms and deep chords with a brilliant touch.

Unease creeps over me every time I see the image of today’s DJs offered on social media. Festivals whose lineups look like a stack of labels at a shopping mall, the same 500 robots bobbing their heads in every live stream, the rigid drone of cut & paste, beardy bros and tacky influencers buying likes + views + careers produced by others in the shadows. Identity politics signalling diversity, but delivering only auditory monotony. It feels a lot like the TV news – you never know who or what is real these days. Anybody can do this, right? It’s no coincidence that most events now resemble populist rallies of certain politicians. Thousands stare in one direction, raise their arms and scream on cue at the sound of nothing happening. What’s the message? Are the masses always right? Who needs dictators when the so-called party has become a ubiquitous loop of conformity and commodification? Who still cares about sharing a real dancefloor with other humans which you can meet again? Some of us, maybe, somewhere. No branding, no selfies – this world isn’t worth living in if people can‘t feel free for a moment, just for the joy of it and the spirit inside. Don‘t go lose this dream, baby. Next up from Palms & Charms, a sublime collection of sun-tinged instrumentals straight out of Vilnius, Lithuania. Miskotom have been releasing some beautiful deep house and downtempo gems in recent years on the likes of Pleasure Unit and Dreamtime. We are very pleased to have the duo here on P&C.

Opening track Huacachina is reminiscent of 90's jazzy house, but with a mellow and distinctly organic palette. Next up, Berenice's Hair catches the wind and features a downtempo chugging groove with swirling organ, cowbell and deep synth pads.

Nazska brings a slice of mystery to a mid-tempo breakdown. Horizontal atmospherics hold sway, as picked guitar and choral synths summon visions of a tropical sun risingover the bay. Finally, title track Aegean Cruise 1955 features swirling guitar trading with ethereal synths evoking nostalgic voyages around the Anatolian Peninsula.

Coming next on Freerange we’re very happy to announce our first Argentinian artist to the label, the highly talented DJ and producer Manuel Sahagun. Manuel has been putting out house music since the early 2000’s and has released tunes on Berlin’s Tooman, UK’s Drop, and Detroit’s Kolour as well as remixing Warren ‘Hanna’ Harris, Robert Owens and Patrick Chardronnet. He brings a freshness and eclecticism to his productions that fits in perfectly with the Freerange ethos of forward-thinking house music loaded with warmth and a touch of soul. The ‘Closest Star’ EP is a superb four-tracker that draws on diverse influences to great effect, and is one of the most original, yet floor-friendly sounding collections of music we’ve heard for a while. The title track is an epic, glittering bundle of arpeggios, electro toms and 70’s string stabs, all sitting perfectly on a sequenced Italo-esque bassline. Imagine combining all the parts of your favourite disco records and then giving them a cutting-edge contemporary flavour and you’ll have an idea of what this highly effective bubbling groove will do to your dance floor.
‘On Point’ sees Manuel pile on layers of intricate rolling percussion, warm pads, electronic squiggles and distorted vocals for a highly distinctive take on the deep house template, one that’s both underground and simultaneously accessible. ‘Awake’ features another superbly tight underground house groove and an insistent disco riff. Part pristine 80’s pop and part French Touch, ‘Awake’ pays close attention to detail in the production and it comes with a killer arms-in-the-air phased breakdown to maintain the energy.
The EP finishes up with ‘Juno Ride’, a nostalgic yet contemporary collection of metallic synths, gentle synth chords and counter melodies, all riding a fat Moog b-line, with just a hint of the very best of 80s synth-pop. The pristine percussion and a seriously effective dance floor-targeted arrangement all add up to a highly usable DJ weapon. Hardwiring to the Red Laser network and initiating an advanced, beta-tested programme of futuro-manctalo cybernetics, TWIII's meta-level hybridisation of Italian synth disco & northern English rave styles, combined with an expert deciphering of modernised club dynamics has resulted in a faultless system capable of withstanding the most extreme sonic test environments. Following the huge success of the Somi Afrikan Lady 12inch SRM 246 that was released way back in 2008. Since that time there’s been a huge demand for Sacred Rhythm to release the alternative mixes that Joaquin Joe Claussell and an exclusive few of his DJ Prominent DJ friends have been championing. Giving in to the pressure, we decided to press the unreleased mixes on 7” Vinyl.

The A Side features the same intensity that is similar to how it is on the previously 12Inch release, but with its own unique vibe. While the B side offers a completely different approach hence leaning more towards the side of, what Joaquin like to call,” a freaky dub exploration of rhythm and drums.” The 7” will be pressed on Special Colored Vinyl.
All in all, this is a dope seven inch of Afrocentric grooves and Dope musicianship that, no less than its predecessor, aims to continue rocking the dance floor.

These 3 have been tried and tested on dance floors from Detroit to Chicago and London to Paris, and Rocksteady Disco is excited for you to have them in your mitts. Limited edition remastered reissue of Funky Family, the italo disco studio project from 1984. This production features Nicola Nicolosi from Nicolosi Family (we can remember him on Amnesie by Turas) and represents a real example of proto-house that became a Chicago classic regularly played by Ron Hardy at Muzic Box and during WBMX radio shows. This edition has the full instrumental cut on the side two instead of the short radio edit available on the original one.

Mount Liberation Unlimited are Tom and Niklas, two Swedes from space who have spent the last 5 years

carving out a particularly vivid niche in contemporary electronic music. Their previous work has seen them

connect with an impressive list of global dance powerhouses: New York's Beats In Space, Melbourne's

Superconscious and Munich's Permanent Vacation have all released 12'' heat from the duo, while their

hometown buddies at Studio Barnhus provided an outlet for what has been perhaps their biggest and boldest

release yet, 2017's double smash single Double Dance Lover. Their live shows are fervent, fast-paced and very

multi-instrumental affairs, performed non-stop at an increasingly prestigious list of clubs and festivals, serving

as prime examples of the MLU boys' core obsession: the interaction of human rhythm and electronic pulse.

They have their own great little radio show on Gilles Peterson's Worldwide FM! Australia loves them! They

got their artist friend Tom-Hadar Elde to sculpt their heads for their debut album cover!

That self-titled debut, to be released May 31 on Studio Barnhus, has been in progress since the very formation

of the MLU project in 2014. It contains some of their earliest work and of course their very latest – all perfected

at the Neve desk of legendary Gothenburg studio Svenska Grammofonstudion, in cahoots with mix engineer

Christoffer Berg (Depeche Mode, Robyn, Fever Ray).

The result is a sonically fascinating, endlessly generous and straight up FUN record that takes the listener on a

joyride through bittersweet stoner disco, frenzied scando-kraut jams and some of the sweetest dance pop to

come out of Sweden this side of Super Trouper.

The package comes backed with a pair of deadly remixes - boss man RUF DUG strips back Hot City to the bare bones, rigs up a couple of jazzy neon lights and a DMX drum machine and brings you his 'Metrolink Vibes In The Area' version, while young upstart METRODOME completes the all-Mancunian lineup on this record with a twisted Marmite 2-step interpretation that is either gonna make you buzz or spew. It's not for everyone.

Legendary Italian house/deep house DJ and producer Don Carlos based in Varese, North Italy. Active since the late 70s. His productions have mixing house rhythms with afro-american jazz sounds, verging sometime towards disco, sometime towards deep house or electronic soul. There's a similarly warm and hazy feel to second cut "Analog Express", where a nagging bassline and chillin' beats come wrapped in sunrise-ready electronics, toasty chords and more cut-up old school jazzy house. Throw in some refreshingly positive synthesizer flourishes of the kind once found in Italo-house records and you've got another tried-and-tested winner. Elegant, well produced classic deep house with sensual jazzy and smooth synth elements that sound really good on any equipment. All of the tracks on this EP are quality for anyone into deep house and quality club music in general.

"In 2016 I released Cascades. Francois K got in touch with some very kind words about the track and offered to remix it, initially in surround for his 2016 show at the Ministry of Sound and later on in stereo. Here it is. It's deep & luscious. Enveloping and all encompassing. A melted chocolate fountain of warmth & joy minus Augustus Gloop.

With a breakout single under their belts on the Very Polish Cut-Outs 'Krystina' and a swirling vapour of mystique surrounding them, the duo present their first full 12" of original material which is both contemplative and transfixing.
The Kalina EP on Young Adults Recordings clocks in around 25 minutes, but the ground it covers cannot be clearly conveyed through conventional cartography - a birdseye view of jagged cliffs, coastal haze, rolling bagpipe hillsides, and smoke signals.

Opener 'Warsaw' borders on the sublime with a patience and gentle simplicity that can't be taught or bought. Placidly ethereal, this is cinematic Balearia in the tradition of Quiet Village that won't soon be forgotten. Chimes, toms, horns and strums swell and crash like gentle titans.

With a sound like Windham Hill gone hardcore, this record promises fans from Black Rock to Berlin.

After the driving, new age electro of opener 'The Right Zone', Terenzi declares 'Yeh Yeh Yeh' with a bush-bashing Jeep of a bassline, blasting Roxanne Shante as the posse pile out of the whip & into the function.

Later, 'Higher Place' sparks the chalice for a pre-dawn dip into the spirit realm...

Sometime after that, designated driver (and Freakout Cult-leader) Jayda G takes the wheel, pulling into the church car park with her 'Deep in Your Soul' remix, a piano house kick-on of all three Roza Terenzi originals. "Feels good, right"

With a world turned upside down, we all need some life affirming music to get us back into the groove and on the floor.

Richard Burkinshaw & James Rial aka Audiojack's standing in electronic music speaks for itself, the pair have been heavily involved since around 2006 and have made quite the impact with releases for 2020Vision, Leftroom, Get Physical and of course their own Gruuv label where they return to here.

Over the past year Gruuv has unearthed material from some of the most promising young talents in the industry, such as Dale Howard, A1 Bassline, Copy Paste Soul and Coat Of Arms, a telling sign of the attentive nature and acute A&R skills of the brains behind the imprint.

Here we see Audiojack offer up some fresh original material, the first of which is title track 'Machine Code', the duo employ a production technique used in their critically acclaimed 2006 hit 'Robot' here, wherein every sound is generated by channeling the rhythmic elements through the same delay. The result is a gritty dancefloor focused cut, fuelled by glitchy effects, vigorous drum lines and baroque structural changes. Up next on the original material is 'Indigo', seeing the pair opt for a more refined, progressive groove this time, playing on vacillating background atmospherics, organic percussion and infectious bass licks.

On the flip side of the single we see two remixes offered up, the first of which is Paul C & Paolo Martini's interpretation of 'Machine Code'. The Italian duo turn in their signature up-tempo vibe with the mix, extracting snippets from the fray of the original and reshaping it into a bouncy and vibrant workout.

Man of the moment Alexis Raphael then closes the single with his remix of 'Indigo', the Hot Creations / Jackathon Jams artist reworks the original track into a dynamic, groove-led number with gritty 909 rhythms and dubby resonant synth stabs driving the composition.


This is as expected superb new material from Audiojack and yet another first rate addition to the Gruuv catalogue...

As Hans Peeman's side project next to his Junktion moniker, New Franklin Theory returns to Outplay with a very personal project. Five carefully produced songs in the form of a mini-album of sorts, which showcases his journey into more melodic synth heavy work. Starting off, 'Andromeda Beach' eases you into the spacey atmosphere of the record with dreamy rhodes supported by his distinctive percussion and bass work.

Following, 'Homeward' introduces melancholic synth lines grounded by an infectious bass line for a Balearic inspired feel. 'Afterburner' ups the tempo with warm arpeggiated Juno sounds and saxy disco samples, which will remind you of his previous work. Space-funk-synth-boogie, that's what comes to mind when listening to 'In Orbit'. Instant groove with a solid beat interspersed with brief vocal samples and dreamy rhodes chords. As the closer, 'The Holtzman Effect' (award for 2018's most nerdy song title, look it up) sets you off floating away on warm chords and bass together with characteristic space bleeps.

As of late, France has been a hotbed for up-and-coming house and disco labels, releasing some of the grooviest tunes pumped out on dance floors across the globe. Newly minted Groovence is no exception to this, bringing forth their their first label release with a various artists compilation that will leave your head buzzing, heart melting and feet stomping. VA releases can be hit or miss but « The Cosmic Groove EP' lives up to its name with funky, spaced out cuts that will have you calling Houston and assuring them that there is no problem.
