Holo - In Limbo EP

Holo

In Limbo EP

12inchELP002
Ellipse Records
14.07.2022

Rising contemporary electronica musician Holo will be releasing his new In Limbo EP via Houseum’s sub-label Ellipse Records on the 25th of February. The Australian producer burst onto the scene in 2019 after seeing his first track 'Atlas' uploaded on the Houseum YouTube channel and after releasing his debut EP of the same name, with house music heavyweight UK label Shall Not Fade’s sub-label Lost Palms. The EP featured the deep house classic ‘In My Dreams’ that earned over 2 million streams on Houseum channel.

Hugo Horwood (Holo himself) is originally from Canberra and is currently living in Melbourne, Australia. His music draws from unexpected genres, including pop, classic rock, acid and 90s hip hop, to create a sound that is truly his own.

‘Bleu’ is the first introduction into the kaleidoscopic EP that will subvert your expectations from the get-go. With a gradual start, the listener is rewarded for taking the extra time to lean back into the song and explore the multilayered tones of chilled vibes and an inescapable otherworldly realm. The first hint at the artist’s vocal talents, the single leaves the listener begging for more.

‘In Limbo’ is the epitome of holidays: luxurious soundscapes and unhurried production at each turn. Join us as we venture down a long, winding road that hugs the mountains on one side and showcases a vast aquamarine world on the other. Just above, around the bend, you know there’s a house party waiting for you that promises sunsets and good vibes but for now, the road stretches on and there isn’t a rush in the world. Why would there be, when you’ve got Holo on the speakers?

It took a long time to get 'Supersonic' sounding the way Holo wanted it to, particularly dialling in the bass sound he could hear in his head. It reminds him of Fatboy Slim's 'Right Here, Right Now' or Robert D's 'Clubbed to Death' (from that scene in The Matrix with the woman in the red dress) with its swirling bassline and relentless drums. The guitar parts at the end are inspired by the intro to Pink Floyd’s Shine On You Crazy Diamond'.

Holo once had this “Airbnb for music gear” business idea and tried to validate it by buying an original Roland TB-303 to rent out to other producers in Melbourne. He ended up stopping that project but found he was way too in love with the 303 to sell it, and he's glad he didn’t because it's been a constant source of inspiration, and it’s all over this track. He’d been mucking around with an acid line over “In Limbo” and found that the 303 line worked brilliantly with the drums and bassline by themselves, so he immediately saved a new version of the project and didn't look back!

Jex Opolis - Bad Timin' Vol. 2 EP

Bad Timin' Vol. 2 EP

12inchBDTIMIN002
Bad Timin
22.09.2022

Some serious sweetness from Jex Opolis on Bad Timin' the sub label of the beloved Good Timin' records. While 2018's Bad Timin' Vol. I charted a course into the art of darkness, this second volume re-imagines the imprint's focus and aims for a more colorful--and inclusive--dancefloor experience. Along with some searing club dynamics, many of those Jex touchstones we all know and love are here in full force: The playful melody, the disdain for genre, the bad puns ... On EP opener "Fought Experiment," Jex pumps the breaks during a drive on the Big Beat highway, with buzz-saw FX, turntablist scratching and a bubbling bassline along for the ride. Meanwhile, two mixes of "Soft Guidance" let the Canadian producer reflect on his late 90s "Global Underground" phase--while swapping out Oakenfold for wash-n-fold, given Jexy's newfound domesticity. Closing out the EP, "Scott Says" keeps the BPMs high and filters dubby techno through a deep house sieve, all while namechecking a little-known Edmonton techno producer. Recommended!!

Ani Roy - Fari 116

Platform 23
01.04.2022

Platform 23 presents Ani-Roy, a project from friends Aniruddha Das and Gary "Roy" Stewart, who recorded two 12's of improvisational acid-house meets drone and samples in 1990.

They met over a love of principally reggae and post punk at Trent Polytechnic, Nottingham in 1982, and started combining equipment, to make tape loops and delays for exploring the basics of dub, all the while building their own Sound System.

This learning and experimenting converged their interests in early possibilities afforded for programming sounds and effects. They moved to London / Birmingham respectively and continued their collaboration until all things aligned in 1990. Coming together with Andrew Campbell, a community / social entrepreneur based in Nottingham - and with access to the Marcus Garvey Centre studios - they recorded two improvisational jams to 2 16 track; Ani arranging drum and bass lines, programming 'counter melodies' with a TB-303, and Roy looking after the ominous ambient loops, melodies, riot and Prince Far I samples.

The fact there were so many "versions" compelled Andrew to put the results out on two 12's instead of one. Fari 116 and Tilt were self-released on hand-stamped white labels.

Archival testaments, but set apart from the burgeoning acid house scene - here they are re-mastered and reissued some 30 years later by Platform 23.

Lone - Natural Aerials EP

Lone

Natural Aerials EP

12inchGREC092
Greco Roman
11.04.2022

Following widespread acclaim for his recent LP ‘Always Inside your Head’, on March 4th / April 8th Matt Cutler AKA Lone releases four re-works of tracks from the album, entitled ‘Natural Aerials’.

On ‘Natural Aerials (Mouth of God Part Two)’, Lone utilises a similar sound palette as album track ‘Mouth Of God’, but rebuilds it into a brand new banger. Energetic, deep, trancey and driven by jungle-schooled breakbeats, with bassbin shuddering low-end, he delves deeper into the vortex. Whereas the album was made predominantly using software, Cutler has since been buying hardware – and this marks the first track made on these newly acquired synths.

Based around a version from Lone’s recent sold-out live show at London’s Village Underground, on ‘Inlove2 (One Thirty Mix)’ he ups the original’s BPM count, with sights set firmly on the dancefloor. Taking cues from the ‘Ambivert Tools’ series, this is a high-grade, proggy, main room acid rush.

On ‘Visited By Astronauts (SHERELLE Had A Groove Remix)’, the fast-rising star takes an ambient interlude from the album, and gives it what she calls “a space age, footwork jungle twist”. Her first released remix, Sherelle continues an impeccable purple patch, with a re-rub that’s both airy and light, but also heavily percussive, full of propulsive forward motion. She states, "it’s a pleasure and honour to remix for Lone, as being a long time fan, it's a beautiful thing to be able to collaborate. I really wanted my first remix to be special and also for someone who I hugely admire, so Matt asking me to be involved in this process wastruly magical!”

‘Echo Paths Ebb And Flow’ takes a downtempo album highlight, strips it back to just the synths, then unfurls them into a blissful ambient work that’s melodic, warm and fuzzy, swaddling the listener in candy floss clouds.

Vid Vai - Laminar Flow LP (2x12")

For the best part of 10 years, For Those That Knoe has maintained its position as a platform for obscure and under-represented artists of recent past, (re)introducing their music to the world in the form of a stories told in chapters and specially crafted albums.

Taking a slightly different tack, For Those That Knoe is looking to the present rather than back in time with a first LP outing for Slovenian producer Vid Vai.

Vid Papez has had a succession of quality EPs under his belt, originally classically trained on violin, lute and guitar, his sound has developed into a lush mix of catchy breakbeat rhythms, precise intelligent percussion and other-worldly melodies and sound scapes.

In constructing Laminar Flow, Vid has taken inspiration from fluid dynamics and coupled it with early influences in the form of UK bleep, IDM and breakbeat sounds. The result is a timeless piece of liquid-smooth sonic art that is strongly relevant in 2022 whilst also giving a gentle nod to the pioneers of the deeper end of the rave scene.

Psychemagik - Above The Clouds EP

The next remix installment from Psychemagik’s LP, “I Feel How This Night Should Look”, comes from longtime mates and sonic colleagues, Warehouse Preservation Society, and esteemed dancefloor cornerstone, Bushwacka.

W.P.S., the mutant duo from Los Angeles, have cropped up remixes and originals with reckless abandon these past years, and here, transform the Psychemagik source material into a breakbeat-infused act of nuclear fission, striking out the gate with heavy rhythms that meltdown into a steady hypnotic groove, all accompanied by dubbed vocal stabs and poignant arpeggios.

Bushwacka's remix of Valley Of Paradise has echoes of some of his earlier signature works. Centered breaks and floating pads guide through his cosmic rendition, whilst still retaining a strong melodic anchor from the original track, and glued together with a thick bouncing bassline - a trip for sure!

From Chicago, Detroit and New York to London and beyond, Mint Condition have got their expert digging hats on to bring you exclusive heat and those rarer than rare jams that have been on your wants list for years! Pickled People - We all know a few of those, but how many of them were turning out bare bones, stripped & funked out rolling tech-house back in 1996? Not many we reckon! Well, except for the dynamic duo of Terry Francis & Jiten Acharya, ably assisted by the man Bushwacka aka Matthew B on mixdown & engineering duties. This self-titled 12" you have here in your hands is a rare diamond, another set of smooth and acidic jams from London's potent tech-house underground, a rich and rewarding scene, one that is back with a vengeance today with discerning selectors from around the globe tuning into what was making clubs move here in the capital pre-millenium. The beauty of these super rare and expensive to obtain tracks is that they seem to be made with both the DJ and the dancer in mind, meaning - they are fun to mix and blend and drop long arse 10 minutes blend with without ever being boring, AND they are sure as hell fun to dance to in the darkened corners of whatever space you're lucky enough to find yourself in. Not short on the old Funk, this is premier league shit right here, from the dons. Proper subterranean business from that London town. Sure to be in your bag for the next 20 years n'all! The Kosmik Kommando A.k.a. Mike Dred - Overmind 2x12"

Black Vinyl Repress

For the third release on De:tuned we proudly present The Kosmik Kommando AKA Mike Dred. Mike hardly needs an introduction; considered as one of the masters of the Roland TB-303 Mike has been releasing records under various aliases since the early 90s. He has recorded for high profile labels such as R&S and Rephlex as well as his own Machine Codes label. Together, with Aphex Twin, Mike was behind the Universal Indicator releases which are among the most collectible and sought after records in techno history.

De:tuned has worked closely with Mike to develop an 8 track project that gives props to the American Psychologist Timothy Leary and his proposed theory of 'The Eight-Circuit Model of Consciousness'. This model describes 8 circuits of information that operate within the human nervous system. Each circuit refers to a different sphere of activity, enhanced by experimentation with a particular substance. Each circuit also represents a higher stage of evolution than the one before it and the higher the circuit, the fewer the people have activated it as the higher four circuits exist for those who migrate to outer space and live extraterrestrially.

The 8 Models are applied to the track titles that present a varied collection integrating acid house, techno, electro and rave culture.

3 of the tracks on offer here were written exclusively for Mike's live performance at the De:tuned 'Meeting of Minds' event in June 2012, which was Mike's first full live show in 3 years.

This 8 track project will be available on limited 180 gr white double vinyl with label and sleeve artwork by Mike himself. Stay Tuned!

Time Cow / Ossia / Jabu - Us Alone

Time Cow & Ossia take 2 tracks from Jabu’s 2020 album ‘Sweet Company’ into unfamiliar (and dance floor friendly) territory. Side A sees ‘Us Alone’ gets transformed by Time Cow from slo-mo tearjerker into syrupy disco wrecker, managing to somehow touch on reference points everywhere from east LA lowrider anthems through 00s garage and all propelled fwd by an eyeball shaking low end pressure. On the flip Ossia takes snatches of the original ‘Slow Down’ and flashes them in around a 4/4 and a synth melody, fragments of Daniela’s vocal floating like a half remembered conversation. Later Rakhi’s strings come in but in a more unsettling way than the original, eventually dissolving to a kind of Majora’s Mask (in dub) conclusion. All terrain / all weathers - club / bbq / afterparty / late night introspection sessions.

Various - Heavenly remixes 1 (2x12")

Marshall McLuhan’s famous edict ‘the medium is the message’ has never been more apt than with regard to modern remix culture. Although the idea of the remix goes way back to the Jamaican dub pioneers and New York disco remixers of the 1970s, the form didn’t truly come into its own until the acid house explosion of the 1980s, when remixers’ credentials often subsumed — and sometimes surpassed — the original source material. Some, among them our lost friend Andrew Weatherall, used remixing as a springboard into multiple other directions, and became auteurs in their own right.

Forged in the white-hot heat of post-acid house Britain, these Heavenly remixes are perfectly weighted with respect and irreverence, the remixer in each case carefully chosen to add heft to the song (as on Al Breadwinner’s dubwise reworking of Mattiel’s ’Guns of Brixton’— the pairing more a game of chess than a best-of-three arm wrestle).

Although Heavenly was founded in the wake of huge upheavals in electronic music, it was still imbued with its own curious parallel life. I’ve always thought of Heavenly as one of the UK’s alt-pop labels; a place where brilliant pop bands live and record, if the general public would only realise. Some of them have ended up in the real, actual charts (Saint Etienne, Doves), but that’s missing the point about Heavenly, who are, like Factory and Fast Product before them, pop music’s conscience.

There is no sense of order to this compilation and we make no apologies. It’s the Heavenly way. Think of it as a present from Loki, the Norse god of mischief. You’ll find a smattering of older tracks: album openers Saint Etienne are taken on a Poseidon Adventure with Underworld, who inject ‘Cool Kids of Death’ with typically manic energy. Elsewhere, ’90s Brum duo Mother add dancefloor pzazz to Espiritu’s innate glamour on an all-funked-up reworking of ‘Los Americanos’, and Mark Lusardi’s remix of Moonflowers’ ‘Get Higher’ is an early Heavenly classic.

On ‘Terracotta Warrior’, a perfect, psyched-out, Mancunian union is created betwixt Jimi Goodwin and Andy Votel, whilst Goodwin cohort Simon Aldred, in his Cherry Ghost guise, receives a proper Tamla-Motowning from Richard Norris (aka Time & Space Machine) on an inspired cover of Cece Peniston’s glam-house hit, ‘Finally’.

There are several of Heavenly’s current darlings here too. One of the most exciting young British prospects, Yorkshire’s Working Men’s Club, effectively remix themselves, as Minsky Rock — WMC’s Syd Minsky-Sargeant and producer Ross Orton — cleave ‘X’ into a riotous industrial racket. Jagwar Ma’s Jono Ma takes the Kraftwerkian leitmotif on ‘Automatic’ and drives the Australian jazz-funkers Mildlife down an electro-convulsive psychedelic tunnel (thankfully no-one was harmed during the making of this remix); Sheffield’s DJ Parrot and Jarvis Cocker deliver one of the outstanding remixes of 2018, turning Baxter Dury’s ‘Miami’ into a lovelorn minor opera; and, making its first appearance on vinyl, David Holmes’ Unloved project is taken on a panoramic Welsh waltz thanks to Gwenno.

There may well be no rhyme, nor reason, to how these compilations have been put together, beyond the fact that they are assembled with love, an innate understanding of the power of great pop music, and a skilled marriage of song and remixer — but does one really need anything more than that for an album to make sense? I’d suggest not.

The Uruguayan producer Marcos Coya opens this EP with “Shadows”, a super groovy track full of acid and sitting trance synths that will make clubbers fly high on a ruling melody that is constantly moving.
For the ones that doesn´t know, “Scoville” is the unit for measuring spiciness, and this track by Ultrahigh is full of it. Expect heavy low frequencies dancing alongside spooky melodic synths and classic 909 drums.

On the B side, a smooth and playful trip from Delorean's “Designated Driver” ruled by different elements that come along together making every second of this track full of groove and happy melodies count.
Lastly Aleexe comes into play with “Effluence”, where you'll find some special soundscapes and extremely dynamic vibes. Pumping bassline, gated synths and swingy percussions on it are capable of moving even your grandma´s feet..

Tim Jackiw of Ukrainian/Australian descent grew up in Adelaide, where he is making impressive sounds on his Amiga 500 computer since the early nineties. As the techno scene thrived during that period he began to explore the cities clubs and radio stations and contributed with DJing and numerous radio shows up till 2005 when he moved to Melbourne for a permanent home. Since then he has been producing and releasing on many quality labels and running his own underground label "Offworld Records Australia"

The Amnesia EP is a follow up to 2019’s successful "Monuments" LP containing 4 tracks of deep, dubby and moving aquatic housey techno. Lucid takes us down a mysterious corridor of twilight space and fleeting hypnagogic imagery, deep basses and layered percussion threaded with Tim's signature live improvisation throughout. Next up is Amnesia the title track with its haze and watery backdrop taking us through a long distant fragmented memory, a broken and decayed film reel recalled through lush expanded pads and rich strings. Side B lifts us up into Pillars of Creation, a deep space cosmic interpretation of universal birth. Finishing off the EP is Gravity loss a funky string laden exploration using off beat percussion and slivers of delayed melody swimming through the atmosphere of some distant planetary sky we can only imagine.

We're Going Deep
12.10.2021

Paul Wise aka Placid is the driving force behind ‘We’re Going Deep’ – an online community and record label born out of a lifelong affair with the many shades of electronic rhythms and an obsession for collecting records since 1988. It’s safe to say that in 2021, he’s showing no signs of letting up.

Known to many in the realms of underground House and Techno, Paul has spent the last few decades moving heads and feet at select venues, parties and festivals across the UK and further afield. His mission is all about sharing and releasing new music for the dance floor, front room or even just your headphones.

As he readies the very first WGD “Solo Series” edition to compliment the label’s growing catalogue. Paul is honoured to welcome one of the Analords of Acid himself, Mr Luke Vibert. A legend and maker of myths in his own right, he is no stranger to providing top grade tackle of every genre he turns his hand to. From the twisted junglist stylings of ‘Amen Andrews’, to the abstract ambience of ‘Wagon Christ’, the bump and funk of ‘Kerrier District’ amongst a number of notorious aliases – there is something irrepressibly unique he brings to the mix that continues to garner him support across generations of music freaks.

For the inaugural occasion of the Solo Series, Vibert turns his hand to drop a trio of aptly named 303 workouts in his inimitable style, proving it’s not what you’ve got but really what you do with it that just oozes pure quality on every level. Leading the charge on Side A, a 13 minute master jam ‘Worward’ goes straight for the jugular with a full range 303 loop filling the mix that simply won’t let go as 808 rhythmic patter drives forward – ever evolving, twisting and turning deep into machine induced hypnosis. Press play and let this stick of audio dynamite blow.

Over on Side B, dip into the spatial atmospherics of ‘Dancehole’ as he marries an ever so slightly off-kiltered lead line to the simplest of drum sequences, all wrapped together with airy synthesis that lighten up the mood. Accompanied with the unnerving jack of ‘Arsehall’, the final cut of this unholy trinity – Vibert manages to pump the move with a touch more urgency in the drums, all layered with detuned waves that leaves you somewhat out of step as they lap around your ears.

One which immediately stands out from the crowd. Being only his third release in 20 years, there's an understandable sense of anticipation around Swatten's output. This release undoubtedly puts Black Key firmly back on the map, picking up their deserved reputation for releasing only the very best deep house, aimed well and truly at the heads.

We’re Going Deep is a new label run by an old head – Paul Wise aka Placid, born out of a lifelong affair with the many shades of deep electronic music and a thirst for collecting records since 1989.

Rather than staying too hung up on the past, the label’s mission is to release new music for the dance floor, your front room or even just your headphones. Next up, Derek Carr brings his own unique sound of warm detroitesque techno, replete with catchy electronic hooks that draw you in and stick in your head for weeks. On the flipside, close friend and fellow TB-303 enthusiast Posthuman delves deep into his box of tricks. Keeping the acid to the bare minimum on his contribution, he provides an epically deep slice of melancholia led by beautiful chords that keep everything moving. Last but not least, Dircsen slows everything right down and takes us on a journey of pure 303 bliss that will delight newcomers and old heads alike.

"When Aniruddha Das (DSPSSSSD) and Gary ""Roy"" Stewart (Dubmorphology) met at Nottingham Trent Polytechnic in the mid-80s, they started on a life-long friendship and musical collaborative partnership that continues today.

While Das went on to acclaim as part of Asian Dub Foundation, Stewart is an artist and experimental sonic musician, producing projects featuring sound design and immersive works, for the likes of Tate Museum.

Together they perform as Dubnoiz Coalition, exploring the outer limits of improvised bass, noise and distortion, which has seen them perform across the globe.

In 1990 they took their first steps in a recording studio, mixing the early influences of Acid House with their interest in drone and sound effects, to create two pieces, Tilt and Fari 116.

Recorded as improvisational jams and dubbed live to the mixing desk, they were pressed as very limited white labels. Here Tilt is all bubbling acid and taut percussion, recorded to a 2” 16 track. Using samplers, drum machines, Roland TB303 and sync box, Ani arranged the drum and bass lines, as well as programming the 'counter melodies' with the TB303, with acid modulations and sometimes in odd time signatures, while Roy looked after the samples and drones.

Archival testaments but set apart from the burgeoning acid house scene and simply great music, here remastered and reissued some 30 years later by Platform 23.
