Guy Mac - Sonic Boom EP

Guy Mac

Sonic Boom EP

12inchHOTC183
HOT CREATIONS
01.02.2022

Rising UK-talent Guy Mac makes a much-anticipated debut on Hot Creations in January with the Sonic Boom EP. Made up of three original tracks, the release acts as both Guy’s and the label’s inaugural release of 2022.

The title track kicks off proceedings in an outright party fashion, as rampant kicks lay beneath up-tempo hats to set the tone. Reverberating vocals bounce alongside driving synth lines, before we’re soon graced with the stripped-back sounds of Waku Waku. Tribal-laced percussion opens into pulsing, space-like samples, whilst the enthralling chant of “waku waku” shimmers softly throughout. Rounding off the EP is Don’t Stop, another no-nonsense, late-night cut packed full of 4x4 drum patterns that perfectly encapsulates Guy’s hard-hitting, club-ready sound.

Big Strick - Resivior Dogs Vol.1

Leonard "Big Strick" Strickland is perhaps best known for his family ties with Omar-S (they're cousins), though his productions are well worthy of praise in their own right. Here, he offers up a sampler 12" featuring cuts from his recent (and excellent) Reservoir Dogs LP. Perhaps the most noteworthy cut is "Family Affair", a lovingly constructed chunk of hypnotic, melodic deepness written with Omar-S. That said, Strick's solo effort "Armed & Dangerous" - a winding chunk of voodoo techno - is arguably better. The mazy techno-funk of Reckless Ron Cook's "Night Moves" is also outstanding.

Chris GESCHWINDNER - NSR 008

A plethora of different dancefloor flavours from Frankfurt's Chris Geschwidner, across four tracks, that take in the warmth and soul of house and the cold steel beauty of techno and bound them up into something fresh and altogether new. 'Corroded' has the colliding drum machines and handclaps of vintage techno or even electro, but welded to a skippy, playful beat that is a definite mood lifter, while dreamy synths seductively cut a swathe around the metronomic hypnotism. 'Pass Over' is smoother, sleeker and combines a bleep techno approach to the soundscape with a bed of comforting Detroit-style synths and strings. 'Viktrak' has more classic Motor City influences but a more classic garage-slanted beat regime - imagine Derrick May's 'Nude Photo' overhauled by Roy Davis Jr. 'The Free' ends the set off with simple but effective electro funk flourishes and a sense of sunny optimism, bringing this lively, accessible but deep affair to a close.

Innerzone EP

12inchB2R008
B2 Recordings
07.03.2022

B2 Recordings welcomes Greek Techno pioneer Novatek onto its roster this February with the 'Innerzone' EP. Savvas Georgiadis is a music producer from Thessaloniki, Greece and one of the pioneers of the techno scene in his country. His activities in electronic music started in 1992 and since then, Savvas, using various pseudonyms/projects, such as Dataman, Fujiyama, The Repeater, Neural Network, Interphaze and of course Novatek which he returns to here, has released music ranging from deep minimal techno to percussive tools, electro, and industrial/EBM. Here his latest offerings come via the burgeoning B2 Recordings, headed up by fellow Greek artist and DJ, Bengoa. Up first on the package is 'Beats Me', fuelled by gritty dub stabs, dynamic 909 drums, a funk-infused bass lick and sporadic vocal chants before title-cut 'Innerzone' leads things down a more 90's-tinged IDM path via offkilter drums, sweeping atmospherics and wandering electronic funk melodies. Opening the flip side is 'Outta Here', which returns to more dubbed out territories, fusing bubbling dub echoes with heavily swung organic drums, bright string lines and rumbling subs. 'White Crash' then rounds out the release on a deep house tip, bringing airy pad swells and shimmering piano keys into the limelight alongside resonant synth sequence and bumpy drums.

Nr& ( Nomi, Rampa, &me) - Broken Toy Ep

Nr&(Nomi,Rampa,&Me)

Broken Toy Ep

12inchKM017
Keinemusik
07.02.2013

There it is, keinemusik number seventeen. We know what youre thinking. You think you know how it works. You think, those
keinemusik fellas will again be doing their little rotation thing, one producer getting a record out after the other, then a Workparty-joint
venture at some point and then it starts all over again. Au contraire! This seventeenth edition is breaking the known beautiful, perfectly
curled cycle. Just like that, so that no one gets bored. This record here is an appetizer for a collaboration-effort between Rampa, &ME
and Nomi, the New York based singer that provided the recent movement of flamboyant Disco-queerness with its sexiest and
catchiest hooks, teaming up with Hercules & Love Affair and doing her own project Jessica 6.
Side B will take care of everyone who is expecting a safe playing house-rehash of the afore mentioned acts and tenderly let a lashing
snare slap every preconception out of sceptic faces. 'Enemy' makes no mistake about being manufactured in Berlin. Its stoic,
technoid intent to pave the way to the floor with utmost straightness might seem like a contrast in comparison with Nomis warm
timbre, but after some bars, youll find both in unrestrained, loving embrace.
On the flip they turn the heat on even more and go for the ultimate, heartwarming club-anthem. 'Broken Toy' is sneaking in with
discreet percussions and some random field recordings on top, until the intro gives way to an instantly touching piano-accord. As soon
as Nomis notably affecting vocal parts are hitting the mark, it should be evident, that this cut is applicable in various situations. It will
inflame floors into rapture of love, it will be perfect iPod-material for lonely midnight-strolls and it makes a perfect new choon for the
weeks and months to come.

Walker & Royce - Self Help 2x12" (White Repress)

REPRESS: 'If you want something done right, sometimes you just have to do it yourself'. In a world filled with false gurus and misguided leaders, so goes the mantra of the New York duo Walker & Royce. After a swift rise in recent years - during which time they pioneered a sound that is often imitated but never replicated - Sam Walker and Gavin Royce have used this mantra as the impetus for their debut album 'Self Help', on their label home Dirtybird.

In order to grow, one often has to look inward, and the pair set out on a trail of self-discovery and advancement. Their journey has resulted in a diverse album that evokes a range of emotion and fervor, one that can be appreciated both on the way to a club as well as feverishly dancing to it in one.

Walker & Royce's signature production is in exceptional form on their solo tracks, such as 'Why Tho', 'Warkin It', 'Best Track Ever' and 'Sunday'. The way they contrast heavy, low-end bass and beats with pristine melodies arises from the first thing they ask themselves when they fire up their studio: 'Will we play this'

The pair has also continued to push the boundaries of their minted formula for a bigger purpose, enlisting several distinct vocalists and collaborators to captivating effect. The legendary Green Velvet lends his vocal talent to 'Rub Anotha Dub', and longtime friend Dances With White Girls appear on two memorable tracks, including the hit single 'Take Me To Your Leader'. Other collaborators such as Sophiegrophy, OnCue, Forrest and Mr. JPatt each introduce their own individual elements to the album, rounding out the varied tones and feelings that comprise the 'Self Help' masterpiece.

The road to self-discovery is filled with many bumps and obstacles, but with 'Self Help', Walker & Royce have proven that they've got the keys and in the driver's seat.

Bart Skils - Bells Of The Revolution

Drumcode favourite Bart Skils kickstarts the new year with his sixth EP for the label Since his debut on Drumcode in 2012, Bart Skils has been one of the label's most regular contributors, with the Dutchman's brand of functional, hook-driven techno a go-to weapon for Adam Beyer; from his stellar 'Shadowprint' EP in 2014, to last year's classy remix of Moby's 'Go'. One of The Netherland's hardest working ambassadors for techno, he is the organiser of the beloved Voltt Love Summer Festival that's has been a favourite of Beyer's for many years. His latest work for Drumcode, 'Bells of the Revolution' continues his impeccable reputation for quality with everything he does, with four cuts all with their own distinct storyline. The title track is characterised by dark driving grooves and bubbling acid line that slowly evolves into a lush melodic riff. 'Ocean Drive' nose-dives into deeper techno territory, while maintaining a sense of exquisite tension throughout.
'Vocalized' follows, a stomping acid techno cut that slides into the deep courtesy of skilfully programmed vox and elegant licks of melody. The EP concludes with 'Retrodade', a track that's been one of the biggest in Beyer's sets in 2017 and features the famous vocal from Rozalla's 'Everybody's Free'. The sample was used with kind permission from the iconic '90s singer.

Chaos In The CBD - Comfort Zone

the in-demand duo chaos in the cbd is back on mule musiq with another breath-taking ep.

this time the new zealand natives present different atmospheric spheres. the a-side tune 'comfort zone' is a slow house burner enlarged with bird sounds, flute melodies and super warm bass power. on the opposite, their track 'educate the hear' marries dub atmospheres and four-to-the-floor grooves, without giving up the hotness that dub music got to offer.
their third tune 'pressure' brings in, what is always needed in a club: funk that shakes the booty. and this wrapped in a gentle house track that stays calm while spreading hard to resist dance emo-tions.

a heartfelt produced ep with three kind heavy hitters that come around for good.

PHANTASY SOUND
23.02.2021

Repress

The 12 track album was written and produced since the turn of 2013 and mixed with Erol Alkan at 'The Phantasy Sound', the label's own studio in London.

A difficult trick to master but like Carl Craig's 'More Songs About Food And Revolutionary Art', Plastikman's 'Consumed' or more recently the work of Four Tet, the album works as a cohesive whole rather than a disparate collection of tracks. Innovative and forward thinking, Drone Logic manages to draw influences from beyond the dancefloor via My Bloody Valentine, NEU! and Chris Carter while still having the techno pulse to scale the walls of any club. The wide array of plaudits and early adopters of Avery's music is proof of this, ranging from acid house legends like The Chemical Brothers, Andrew Weatherall and Richie Hawtin to the best of the new breed in Maya Jane Coles, James Holden and Factory Floor.

Audiojack - Surface Tension 2x12"

Escapism is a theme that runs through the very heart of music. We listen to be transported, removing ourselves from our immediate surroundings as our senses relax and the sonic experience washes over us. During times of hardship, such a sensation is naturally magnified. Music gifts us a way out from our challenges, allowing us to choose how we feel in response to the sounds we hear. This theme has been explored meticulously by Audiojack over the past four years, resulting in the release of their second album, Surface Tension, on Crosstown Rebels this April.

The journey sets off with Subterranea, a futuristic breaks-inspired cut that features shimmering female vocals throughout. It feels both euphoric and spacious, taking us to a world far removed from ours. The first collaborative effort comes next in the form of Under Your Skin. Released as the album’s lead single in February, Kevin Knapp’s weighty lyrical offering takes no prisoners, paving the way for the track’s punchy, percussion-heavy backbone.

925 Shift ups the pace, pairing resonant kick-hat combos against a myriad of robot-like synths whilst gentle keys chime softly in the background. Surreal yet familiar in one, it opens smoothly into Easy Rider, a groove-led, minimal-laced dance number that transports us to brighter days with upbeat piano rolls and dream-like chords.

Psychoactive pt. 1 continues the warming theme, delving further into tropical realms. Ethereal pads blend into pulses of acid to form an immersive auditory piece. Psychoactive pt. 2 resumes proceedings, this time featuring Scottish poet William Letford. Beginning with weighty snare patterns, the track’s soundscape soon changes with the advent of William’s delicate vocals. It builds to a poignant crescendo, as changing piano tones marry up next to emotive violin strings to pull deeply on our heartstrings.

After teaming up with label-head Damian Lazarus on Into The Sun last year, established singer-songwriter Jem Cooke collaborates with the pair on Feels Good. The UK-vocalist is no stranger to Crosstown Rebels, having had her and Made By Pete’s So Long remixed by Audiojack in 2018. It’s a real peak-time number that melds prominent clap combos with Jem’s touching lyrical contribution before First Dawn brings things to a tender close. The whispering voice of The Silver Reserve amplifies the track’s profound nature, captivating us in a haze of starry-eyed reflection. We are left to meditate on our own musical voyage, leaving us in a state of quiet contemplation.

Through Surface Tension, Audiojack paints an auditory picture that connects us to the deeper themes of the album. Utilising sensory samples throughout creates a feeling of immersion, helping us to feel a part of the cinematic experience.

UK-duo Audiojack have remained at the forefront of electronic music for over a decade. First rising to prominence on 20:20 Vision in the mid-2000s, the pair have continually developed during their career, launching their own label Gruuv in 2010 before debuting on Crosstown Rebels in 2016 with Turya. This natural evolution helped drive the album’s early formation in 2017, whilst the events of last year inspired the Isolation Tapes series, a selection of releases that delved into the feelings created by lockdown and seclusion. Providing an escape from the anxiety and uncertainty of these environments, the likes of Eli & Fur, Polarbear and Lady Vale appeared on the series as vocalists, bringing together a community of artists and listeners alike.

Emerging Irish talent Lukey makes his debut on Hot Creations next month with the three-track Less Is More. Achieving such a feat so early in his career signals a major milestone for the young artist, setting the tone for a highlight year ahead.

The title track kicks off the release, showcasing the Irishman’s signature style with a minimal, four-four led bassline that features a rolling synth throughout. Guido Schneider & Daniel Dreier - Liquid Summer EP

Master minimalist Guido Schneider links with Daniel Dreier for two new tunes on the Opulence label that come with tasty remixes from Martin Buttrich and Ostrich.

Opener 'Liquid Summer' is a fluid deep techno cut, with rolling rubbery drums and spooky vocal echoes. Woozy synths lead your mind down a rabbit hole and the result is perfect dancing music. Studio wizard Martin Buttrich remixes it into something more dry and stripped back, with driving drums and off kilter piano notes bringing a freaky feel.

The next original is 'Behind the Curtain', a punchy cut with the sort of warm drums that really make you move. Curious synth details, alien life forms and sci-fi motifs all colour the groove and make it a perfect late night jam, while Ostrich remixes it into seven minutes of restless and kinetic minimal tech with spangled synths and sci-fi details that bring real charm.

Buttrich then offers a Sub Fire Dub of 'Liquid Summer' that's designed for melting minds and latching intoxicated bodies onto the smooth, endless grooves.

Supported by:

John Digweed, Joseph Capriati, Mathias Tanzmann, Dubfire, Damian Lazarus, Reboot, Steve Lawler & more.

LTJ Bukem (Kinetic, Good Looking) - Feeling both mixes of Liquid Summer

Timo Maas - Liquid Summer Orig is cool...nicely trippy....My fav is the Buttrich Rmxs... both super dope

Reboot - superb ep with fantastic remixes.

Only occasional flakes of ash were landing on the sand, reminding her of the recent events. She could still somehow spot the smoky trail of the Leviathan, dissolving in the distance. Michael Mayer - Brainwave Technology

Michael Mayer’s latest EP, Brainwave Technology, comes at you purposeful, stealthy and sly. It’s a glorious left turn for the redoubtable producer, one that sees his typically lean and lithe productions buffed to a metallic, futurist sheen. There’s a gleam in the eyes of tracks like “Brainwave Technology” and “Alpha” that speaks of serious fun, of the intersection of the pleasure zone and the frontal lobe.

“Brainwave Technology” itself is informed by Mayer’s deep dive into the thorny terrain of artificial intelligence, transhumanism and posthumanism. Inspired by reading German philosopher Richard David Precht, Mayer found himself heading down the “proverbial rabbit hole,” as he describes it, “watching hours of YouTube material by self-proclaimed prophets of these ‘inevitable’ changes to come.” Never one to be taken in by the egotist’s dance, Mayer’s cynicism about the whole endeavour is tempered, a little, by the deeper questions that these figures gesture towards: “Is it really an evolutionary step that man and machine become one? Or is it rather a marketing plot by Silicon Valley billionaires?”

On “Brainwave Technology”, Mayer plays the charlatans at their own game, turning their logic against them by exposing the fruitiness of their ‘visions’. “I chose irony as my sword with which I chopped off some quotes from some of those batshit crazy prophets and self-promoters,” he explains of the drooling psychobabble he drops in the track’s lacuna. There’s a sense of humour here – how could you not laugh at these hungover egotists? – but there’s levity too, a sense that Mayer’s using sound to expose the contradictions and double-speak at the heart of these half-formed ideas. It’s a Burroughsian tactic, to slice into the heart of the voice to see what hidden truths surface.

It was Burroughs, too, who once said that “when you cut into the past, the future leaks out”; Brainwave Technology cuts into the logic of the futurologist to leak out the messiness of modern reality. On “Alpha” and “Gamma”, Mayer seems to conjure up the stark, ominous music that’d soundtrack a science fiction reinterpretation – or preinterpretation – of our modern malaise, all funereal wreaths of electronic noise and clatterboxing beats. As the EP resolves with “Device For The Young At Heart”, Mayer’s questions are piling up: “Do we want to become immortal and live on as a download? Do we really give up on Earth and put all our effort into colonising Mars?” There are no answers, of course, but plenty of imaginings-to-be. Brainwave Technology soundtracks both dystopian and utopian possibilities of what could come next.

Nebraska - Chant des Oiseaux EP

Stepping up for his fourth release on Heist, we’ve got sample wizard Nebraska coming in with some lovely chops and a giant curveball of an
a-side that has summer anthem written all over it. Curious? Dive into this massive 4 track EP by the London native who keeps on bringing the goods.

The Chant des Oiseaux EP is built around a collaboration between Nebraska and BeBelle. Anyone who’s picked up Nebraska’s 2021 release on his own Friends & Relations label will have already heard a glimpse of what happens when these 2 get into the studio. They have a mutual love for French vocals and we can’t blame them; everything BeBelle says, whispers and chants just sounds syrupy sweet.

This might be most evident on the title track of this single, where modulated Rhodes chords, distant chirping and fluttering of birds and a minimal beat form the foundation for BeBelle’s mesmerizing vocal. The dreamy and contemplative vibe of this track makes you long for those endless days of summer. We’re not sure if it’s a 70’s summer we’re longing back for, or 2022’s summer to look forward to, but with music like this, it doesn’t really matter, does it?

If you were still hovering mid-air on the vibe of the A1, ‘Skelp Tune’ – the second A track – will take you back to the ground and straight into the club. Skelp tune is a Detroit inspired house track (Nebraska sent us a ‘note to self’ saying ‘you are not Moodymann’ along with the first demo of this one). He doesn’t have to be; this track has all the clever sampling and disco energy of a classic Nebraska track, nicely tucked into one hell of a groove.

The flip starts with ‘Cop Show’: A no frills disco house track with a life affirming string section, guitar licks all over and a bottom end to freak out your neighbour’s neighbours.

We round up the EP with another collaboration with BeBelle, with the track ‘Henri Rousseau’. The track is built on a groove that almost gallops along, with strings, outer-worldly vocals and howling soundscapes that turn this track into a covert disco burner on the more experimental side of house music.

On the Chant des Oiseaux EP, Nebraska effortlessly shows off his impressive sampling skills, electronic fiddling, and powerful drum programming, reminding us that he’s not lost an inch of talent over the years and manages to surprise us with his music. Knowing him, this is simply because he’s simply exploring new ways to keep surprising himself.

Yours sincerely,

Maarten & Lars

Feelings EP

Rekids

MTM Records label boss Shinedoe joins Radio Slave’s Rekids Special Projects with a synth-driven techno release entitled ‘Feelings EP’.

Since her renowned debut release ‘Dillema’ back in 2004 on 100% Pure, the Amsterdam-based artist and Intacto Nights head Shinedoe continues her two decades of success with her latest release staying true to influences she takes from Detroit, Chicago and her local scene.

Alongside 2000 and One, the co-owner of Intacto Records has built a notable catalogue of in-house releases in addition to her remixes on Cocoon, Bpitch Control and a collaboration with Jerome Sydenham on Ibadan Records. Amidst performing around the world and regularly at the likes of Berghain, Shelter and about blank, while also remixing esteemed artists such as The Knife, she now joins Matt Edwards’ iconic imprint with an enthralling analogue techno release.

‘Feelings’ opens on a 90's rave tip with arpeggiated synths, delayed hats, rolling snares and distant voices before ‘Roots Are Calling’ dives in as Shinedoe brings her African grooves back to techno with rattling percussion, reverbed plucks, enticing tom hits and saturated claps.

On the flip ‘Nature Save Us’ bounces with mid-range bass, 909 like beat programming, whistling lasers and subtle strings until the ‘Beats Mix’ finalises with a rhythmically charged edit, featuring vocals from Shinedoe herself, pulsing with classic cymbals and sublime layered vocals.
