Tornado Wallace - Thinking Allowed Ep

Repress

If we listen to the Higher Self, our experience of life is joyful and abundant. When you see yourself connected to something bigger than yourself, you no longer feel must do it all alone. Your sense of power becomes highly magnified and your fears are greatly diminished. With the Universal Energy on your side, you can learn to trust not only yourself, but the Universe as well. There is nothing to fear. You are tapping into your source of power. When people speak of being "on a path" or that "life is a journey," they're referring to the constant vigil required to listen to the lessons of the Higher Self. The path that needs changing is the one that's in your mind. It is your mind that has to be changed first, then all that's right will follow. As you begin to awaken, reach out and turn on your tape machine, lie with your eyes closed and let the soothing, loving message sink in, "I am creating a beautiful day."

Daniel Avery - Drone Logic 2x12"

Repressed !!
Daniel Avery has announced details of the release of his debut album. Drone Logic will be released through Phantasy/Because Music on Monday 7th October 2013. The 12 track album was written and produced since the turn of 2013 and mixed with Erol Alkan at 'The Phantasy Sound', the label's own studio in London.

A difficult trick to master but like Carl Craig's 'More Songs About Food And Revolutionary Art', Plastikman's 'Consumed' or more recently the work of Four Tet, the album works as a cohesive whole rather than a disparate collection of tracks.

Innovative and forward thinking, Drone Logic manages to draw influences from beyond the dancefloor via My Bloody Valentine, NEU! and Chris Carter while still having the techno pulse to scale the walls of any club. The wide array of plaudits and early adopters of Avery's music is proof of this, ranging from acid house legends like The Chemical Brothers, Andrew Weatherall and Richie Hawtin to the best of the new breed in Maya Jane Coles, James Holden and Factory Floor.

Firmly established as one of the UK's most exciting new DJ / producers having cut his teeth in Weatherall's Shoreditch studio bunker, Drone Logic follows up Avery's universally acclaimed mix CD for London clubbing institution Fabric where he remains a resident, recent remixes for Primal Scream, The Horrors & Django Django and last year's Need Electric and Water Jump EPs on Alkan's Phantasy label. This summer sees him play at Bestival, Festival No.6 and the Green Man festival.

Mathew Jonson - Blurry Remixes (incl. Dixon Remix)

A true techno auteur, Mathew Jonson earlier this year released his second solo album, 'Her Blurry Pictures' on Crosstown Rebels, encompassing a new evolution in his rhythmically complex and timeless approach over eight fluid and rich composition. Now soon to drop is a package of unmissable 'Blurry Remixes' featuring a trio of first class reworks by Dixon¨ Tale Of Us and Akufen
Innervisions boss and Berlin luminary Dixon turns in a storming reimagining of the atmospheric, electronic matrix of 'Level 7' where straight talking techno does the driving as layers build, get stripped back then steered onto a more melodic path underpinned by a rumbling deep bassline.
Next up, the unstoppable duo Tale Of Us transport one of the more playful 'Blurry' cuts 'Kissing Your Eyes' into a brooding dubby sound bed of live sounding drums combined with rippling echoing synth melodies. Berlin based Carmine and Matteo aka Tale Of Us, first rose to prominence on the Visionquest imprint in 2011 and have since released on Life And Death and M_nus.
Glitchy tech meets raw rolling drum beats in Akufen's 'Body In Motion' remix. As hypnotic, as you would expect from the Canadian mastermind, Akufen lures you into a trance and keeps you guessing, progressing from dextrous minimal textures to full on fluid jazzy piano interpretations.

Piper Spray - Drugstore phones [C/D]

"Drugstore phones" is a double LP from Russian wizard Piper Spray. This enigmatic producer is a hidden gem of Russian electronic underground. The album is taking you on an unexpected trip in many ways - it's hard to define the genre but one can feel the author's willingness to experiment and explore new sounds. This sonic documentary of Piper's world is breathing and constantly changing, though it's the most balanced and mature work of the author. A spectacular opener for GOST ZVUK's gatefold LP series.

OOH-sounds
07.02.2020

New Orleans based XDCVR (Opal Tapes, Detroit Underground) looks down into the acid depths of digital hyperreality, torturing FM synthesis into eight hectic tracks of abstract sonic expressionism.

His debut on OOH-sounds *10100100000 throws some terrific 'fuck yous'—with renewed, raw and radical approach—chasing for a new lexicon to express the fragmented surface of current aesthetics, and we learn the lingo as we go.

Master by Rupert Clervaux. Limited Edition Cassette of 50 with Instant Download Code. Artwork printed on Hi-Vis Tyvek Security Wristband.

The rather elusive producer XDCVR certainly works here under the influence of cyberpunk literature, but focuses on a less elegant and romantic vision of the future imagined by Gibson, to name one..Working on a limited palette of FM sounds *10100100000 alternates beetween nervous electronic, dark ambient and slower tempos over intentionally raw and not 'well-mannered' architectures. Strange algorithms lead sounds into unusual broken patterns, modeling a vividly imagined allegory for the constant fragmentation, poor concentration and—often—neuroelectronic void of our time.

From the anarchism of 1s & 0s of 'The New Politics Of Youth' and '3rd Left 5 Down', to the binary mood board for the hyper fashion conscious of 'I bought some fufu Cav Empt bc wots more Cyberpunk than buying fake designer clothing from China?', to the full hi-vis in triple black climate arpeggios of 'X001ver', to the post-post ambient hangover of 'Wintermute', '_X003' and '*For Internal Use Only'—where Second Woman seem to blend with Basinsky—to the Hanckock-on-Crystal downtempo of 'The Hollow Construct Of Lonny Zone', *10100100000 is a kind of bird's-eye view of the fragmented surface of current aesthetics— bit-coin mining machines run in the background.

2nd Drop Records

Clear/red vinyl Edition

2nd Drop Records release 'Seven Lies', the debut album by Felix Manuel aka Djrum (pronounced 'Drum'). Its sounds are inspired by the rawness of urban London, influences of Portishead, DJ Shadow and The Cinematic Orchestra, jungle, minimal techno, classic house, broken beat - all seamlessly segued with a nod to jazz vinyl and film music.
Fans will recognise Djrum's iconic tropes on 'Seven
Lies': widescreen atmospheres, dub chords, dusty and melancholic strings, obscure film samples. But this time its spread over a bigger, more luxurious canvas that dips like an undulating terrain of sound; techno troughs, bumpy hip hop breaks, euphoric
drum and bass, all filtered through the Djrum node.
Felix would admit himself he is a not a prolific producer. Preferring to craft and hone, often allowing music to mutate and diverge down different paths, his tracks often top the 8-9 min marks in
length. However, each track is never at risk of becoming staid or boring, quite the opposite as ideas mutate and evolve, subtle differences and nuances are evoked and explored.
Inspired by the sounds of Ninja Tune's Solid Steel
radio show, Oxford born/London based Felix became....

Muslimgauze - Lalique Gadaffi Handgrenade

Given Jones' rather slack approach to track titles (both being consistent with and sometimes even just supplying them), it's a bit of a relief to realize that two tracks with the same name are indeed related. In the case of "Arab Jerusalem", which makes up nearly half of the newly-released Lalique Gadaffi Handgrenade, that kinship is immediately apparent even though both tracks are clearly their own experiences. Released as the first track on the Minaret-Spearker picture disc 7" in 1996, "Arab Jeruzalem" (spelling also sometimes being fairly slack) is 5:42 of effectively shifting dark ambience, wordless female vocals drifting over the hand percussion, chimes, and static of the track, with eventual conversational loops discussing ... something underneath.

The end of that version is especially striking for the way the woman's wordless singing starts being sampled in such a way that it overlays the whole track (and, slightly, itself). The almost 24-minute "Arab Jerusalem" here might be called the Deer Hunter version of the same story, building with great patience and many more abstract detours towards what now seems like simultaneously an excerpt and, now, a climax.

As with many of Jones' more ambient tracks, the great length just lets it cast its spell more thoroughly and entrancingly. The other three tracks, meanwhile, suggest some of Jones' other work but never evoke them as directly as "Arab Jerusalem". "Jordan River" is nearly as long (a second shy of 20 minutes) but strips out the vocal elements in its predecessor, focusing instead on a more active percussive workout (analogue and digital both) and a river of hiss running down the center of the track. The title track of Lalique Gadaffi Handgrenade might bring to mind the title of "Lalique Gadaffi Jar" from Libya Tour Guide (last reissued by Staalplaat in 2015), but if they're sonically related Jones must have practically melted the other track to get this one.

And the closing "Desert Gulag" (like the title track, a much more manageable length than the first two epic tracks here) bears a slight resemblance to "Negev Gulag" from 1996's Fatah Guerrilla, here what was a piercing, repetitive drone is softened and looped over more of Jones' percussion. The result is a well-rounded release that shows off many aspects of Jones' sound as Muslimgauze, while existing (like many of these DAT tapes do) in conversation with much of his previously released work.

Va ( Toma Kami, Pablo Marco, Liem & Eddie Ness, K-lone) - Rivershells

Back in the area. Banoffee Pies original imprint continues with BP007. The more serious and leftfield off shoot under the labels wing this time inviting the introduction of two new label members on this 4 track VA. Toma Kami opens the A1 with the title Rivershells, a slowly erupting swirl of percussion and progressive drums. A real head turner.
The A2 comes from Pablo Marco with his second addition to Banoffee after his breakbeat power track on their Black Label Series Imprint earlier in the year. Murmuring vocals and a swirling feeling with 'All About' - sure fire dance floor reset button included.
The B1. comes from Liem & Eddie Ness, who's split EP with ac$ on the earlier released BP005 analog acid record was enough to invite a return appearance this time with leftfield 'Fujiyama', and welcoming of K-Lone previously known for his involvement on the powerful Bristol label, Wisdom Teeth with a down tempo track with warm spherical sounds.

Detox Twins - Dead Horse Ghost LP

At last, the long mooted, hotly anticipated Detox Twins debut full length finally hits the racks this November. Following a slew of instant sell out, hugely acclaimed 45's, the first LP is utterly wonderful despite the apparent silence during its preparation, the wait is more than worth the while.

Comprising the duo of Mark Vorderhaus (recently returned to the UK after a period in Berlin where almost all the LP was recorded) and Devi von Teufel. Ten absolute high end, synth pop nuggets, each one superbly crafted with the ageless electronics and pop savvy-ness of Mark’s writing and electronics, icily coated with Devi’s Germanic, Nico-esque vocal delivery.

Based heavily on the tracks which formed the bulk of the duo’s 7” releases on PY, these are an absolute joy and work superbly and seamlessly well over the course of the album.

Hugely recommended to fans of early Mute/Blackwing studios output, Fad Gadget, DAF, The Normal and co; their music is often described as “typifying the PY sound” as imagined by label head Dom, upon his setting up Polytechnic Youth in 2014.

A record that has that rare trait of sounding timeless in its (very European) nod to that key period of electronic pop from the mid ‘70s whilst also sounding utterly fresh and new in 2019.

Jonathan KUSUMA/SLEEP D/SAMO DJ/MASCARAS / POWDER / DJ CITY - Nothing Matters When We Are Dancing Vol 10: Main Room

Discodromo are delighted to present a three-vinyl compilation to celebrate the 10th birthday of their Berlin party 'CockTail d'Amore'. The compilation features the sound that best envisions the party and it's evolution throughout it's first decade.

Jonathan Kusuma's 'Energi Hall' expresses the Main Room sound in his own future-tribal terms as does DJ City with his bleep house-inspired Torreyson Drive.

This vinyl features two highly desired collaborations: Mascaras x Powder on one side and Samo DJ and Sleep D on the other.
If the former explore polyrhythmic grooves and unexpected sonic layering, the latter drift into arpeggiated iterations of modern Trance.

Desert Sound Colony - Cartographer

Having spent the past few years quietly building up a dedicated crowd of followers and dancers as a club night, Scenic Route step out for their first offering as a label with three expertly crafted club cuts from Desert Sound Colony, an artist whose pumping productions have provided some of the parties’ most memorable moments. Since his debut release in 2014 on New York’s Scissor & Thread, Desert Sound Colony (real name Liam Wachs) has been refining a deeply personal club sound with releases for the likes of Futureboogie, Me Me Me, his own Holding Hands imprint and most notably of late, Nick Höppner’s Touch From A Distance. In addition to his productions garnering support from the likes of Midland, Raresh, Andrew Weatherall and Lena Willikens, Wachs himself is also a highly sought after DJ whose skills have seen him land bookings at some of the world’s most well respected clubs and festivals, including two stints at Berlin’s Panorama Bar already this year.

His prowess as a DJ has undoubtedly informed the music featured on the Cartographer EP. All three tracks are primarily designed for club use yet their intricate arrangements and undulating instrumentation ensure they remain captivating, despite the effectiveness of their functionality. The EP’s opener, “The Cartographer”, is a sleazy machine-driven odyssey, continuously building and evolving until snapping back into its original groove with a vengeance. “Gypsy Moth” sees Wachs team up with fellow Holding Hands affiliate Guava (real name Bradley Hutchings) for a dangerously syncopated drum workout doused in warped agogo bells, spliced vocals and a two-note bassline with a distinctly London flavor. Rounding the release off is “Budapest”. The combined power of the track’s interlocking kick and bass provide a solid stage for Desert Sound Colony to unleash an eerie arp and pads combo alongside a flurry of stuttering percussion and twisted samples while intermittently sprinkled with an unintelligible and downright ominous pitched down voice.

A chance meeting in a New York club led to the conception of Mowgan’s debut album, in collaboration with renowned African Benin-born Nigeria raised singer and multi-instrumentalist, Kaleta (Leon Ligan-Majek) an ex Fela Kuti, Sunny Ade, Lauryn Hill cohort who also fronted Akoya Afrobeat Ensemble and presently heads up a 70s style afro funk band called Super Yamba based in NYC.

The Frenchman was working at Lina Frey when he overheard a Beninese salsa singer called Laurent Hounsavi channeling Afro-centric vibes through his performance. He approached the singer and was put in touch with Kaleta, who lives in the Big Apple, too. What happened next was pure magic, as the two men got to work in the studio to bring their two worlds together.

It’s the kind of mystical alchemy that only happens once in a blue moon; Kaleta was given carte blanche over Mowgan’s extensive collection of Africa-inspired electronic instrumentals.

He selected his favourites and performed on each one, delivering an original vocal, and his own guitar licks, over the top. To stir up even more electrifying vibes, Kaleta also invited several of his talented friends to join the recordings sessions - they included vocalists Shade Myers Emmanuel, Justin Masters and Gbenga Wise, Freddie Deboe on sax, Mic Dada assisting Mowgan on synth pads and Takuya Kuroda, the infamous Japanese trumpet player from Kobe who specialises in neo-soul, hip hop and electronica.

The result is ‘Karoussel’, a vibrant, dynamic, soul-enriching hybrid between electronica and deep African musicality that sets the standard for contemporary collaborations between western and African artists, and the first in a series of album projects from Mowgan on his fledgling label Mow Records...

An active member of the Barcelona scene and frequent John Talabot collaborator, Arnau Obiols debuts his Velmondo project with his first release for Hivern. In 'Moon Gazing' he draws inspiration from early forms of electronic music in the 70's, whether it's dub, krautrock, industrial, ambient or post-punk, to conjure enigmatic atmospheres through raw and primitive sounds. A multi-instrumentalist and music designer who has played in countless bands, his approach to electronic music production has always been unorthodox. These five tracks were created by experimenting with "analog synths, guitars, many pedals and many acoustic instruments" in his studio at Bellaterra, a suburb located in the outskirts of Barcelona. The 12" comes housed in a sleeve by Barcelona-based designer Marc Mir.

Werkha - The Rigour

Worldwide Awards 'Label of the Year' First Word Records is very proud to welcome 'Werkha' to the stable with an all new EP, which is called 'The Rigour'. Interpret Werkha, hails from Manchester originally and released his debut EP back in 2012.

Following early praise from Gilles Peterson and the like, he'll went on, to release a series of records for Brighton-imprint Tru Thoughts, including an album in 2015, 'Colours Of A Red Brick Raft', and co-writing/producing Bryony Jarman-Pinto's debut album in 2019.
He's provided remixes for Quantic, Marcos Valles, Dutch Uncles, Andrew Ashong & J-Felix, toured across Europe with Bonobo, Mr Scruff & Chet Faker and is working with poet/singer 'Keisha Thompson', additionally to composing music for documentaries.

... So to the EP, and we set off with the delectable synth-boogie of 'Generation X', laden with strings from Simran Singh - Next up is the 4/4 low-slung head-nodding funk of 'The Key' featuring the vocal talents of Berry Blacc, before we head into some mid-tempo clavinet-lead hip hop vibes on 'Swing Thru'; lush strings again ably complementing and contrasting the bass-weight within the track.

'In Sunny G' follows next, picking the tempo back up a touch with a soulful vocal hook from Ellen Beth Abdi delivering blissed-out sun-glazed sonics, as the title would suggest. This 5-track opus closes out with 'Favourite Corner'; similarly to the EP opener, this is more playfully groovy breakbeat, laced with strings, a swagged-out guitar lick and assorted arpeggiated keys.

As to the meaning of the title 'The Rigour', Werkha says (...)
"Music is work. In meaning all things, it's different ways, it's a craft that I apply myself to and exist by. As much as that is about love, it's also about pouring in time, effort, patience & rigour. This record is about reflecting on my process and the identity of 'Werkha' as a part of my life ... these tracks were selected from a much larger bunch of ideas. The tracks that made this EP are the ones where the process was playful. Play in music is so important and these tracks are the ones that best personify play and curiosity, in both their sound and in their process. They all go through the rigor of being played with, pushed and pulled in different directions …"

Werkha has become known for a uniquely eclectic blend of electronics, broken beat, soul and jazz, nestled in an intersection of truly innovative British club music, and exemplified on this EP.

As bottom end provider for Cinematic Orchestra and Paper Tiger, Hunrosa (AKA Sam Vicary) already has something of a pedigree for a man of such tender years. His music glides effortlessly between Bonobo at his most sonorous, Jon Hopkins at his most ethereal and Flying Lotus at his most freaky. Currently based in Manchester, his music captures the wild organic senses of his Cornish childhood, anchoring it with a darker 2am undercurrent. Following the success of 'Ransom' (a firm favourite of BBC 6 Music's Tom Ravenscroft) Hunrosa returns with his newest offering 'We Know'. An eerie, ethereal track full of haunting atmospheres, Vicary enlists Austrian percussion maestro Manu
Delago, who lends his hang drum expertise to the proceedings weaving it amongst the twisting, intricate beats and Anna McLuckie's delicate vocals. the original is accompanied by a white label 12' containing three reworkings from burgeoning producers Lavan, Etherwood and Danvers. Newcomer Lavan is up first, moulding the organic melodies and earthy percussion into a dubbed out, soulful and bouncy 4/4 number. Hospital Records golden boy Etherwood (whose band Hunrosa is also a member of) brings a late-night liquid DnB atmosphere into play, harnessing the raw emotional power of the lyrics, as reverberating piano chords strike out into the darkness. Having turned the
heads of Bradley Zero and Gilles Peterson with his recent releases, CoOp and WotNot Music's Danvers resets the atmosphere with a zen like extended intro, before launching headfirst into a hypnotic and enthralling looped rhythm section. The groove locked in place, it rises and falls with precision, joined by spaced-out synths throughout the nine-minute duration, allowing the majestic instrumentation to gather pace as the spine chilling vocals drift overhead.

IF YOU ARE INTO: dull corporate operators, echoes of the synapses, vending machine music, text-to-speech hysteria, under the influence drum incursions, modulating machinery until it breaks, unnecessary untrue information, sticky dancefloors, garageband aficionados, techno-mutations, third parties provocations, hard-to-draw-a-line genres, tangible psychedelia, obscure naivety ... to be continued ...

Limited Edition of 300 vinyl LPs, cover printed on reverse cardboard w/special orange-fluo-sticker, includes download code.

Master & cut by Rashad Becker @ D&M Berlin.

Furious Frank - Infinity Pool

Melbourne based producer Furious Frank has been making plenty of noise of late. He returns in 2019 with his very own imprint “Mind Dance”, of which will undoubtedly be home to much of his expanding portfolio of high quality, club ready tracks. His debut Mind Dance release ‘Infinity Pool’ unveils a diverse yet unified front. Touching on early 90s acid, electro and trance, the release is brought together by a common thread of crisp, classic analog drums and 303 acid lines. Frank expertly contrasts these driving rhythms with moody pads and spoken word samples calling us back to the 90s, creating a nostalgic sense of euphoria sure to capture the hearts and minds of any early morning dance floor. Limited to 300 copies.

The Zenobi3 - Interstellar (NCFM 02)

NCFM is where Joaquin B. Lapeña displays his most radical activist spirit, under "The Zenobit3" moniker.

On this second installment of the NCFM trilogy, The Zenobit3 invites us to board his starship in order to take us on an interstellar journey through all corners of the Universe, entering the darkest zones whilst crossing through the sparkles of once brilliant stars.

'Defend your Values', it's a clean track with a crisp mix, where evolving pads finely weaved with the deep bass stand out. A lively build up based on a constant beat goes straight to the deepest layers of the soul, 100% Zenobit3 style.

Interstellar is the climax of the trip, the final instant of the cosmic experiences just lived. It fills our bodies with emotion through epic melodies that operate like doses of encapsulated faith.

Evitceles - The Substance Of My Fantasies

Following September 2017's release of "Imperfect Charm" a 5-track EP of post-club, haunted techno and heady sound designed industrial.
Evitceles has developed his sound far further, with releases on Seagrave, Yerevan and his own Amek imprint. "The Substance Of My Fantasies" is his first album and boils down the previous work into a narrative and truly dramatic session over its 9 tracks.

Opening gambit "Take Me to Common Ground" unlocks the gates with bruising rave stabs left to exist in a vacuum of sub-bass boom and augmented voice. "Nightcrawler / Third Night" is a diffuse future-garage roller, priming razor-edged basslines against a hollow melancholia, a theme present throughout this album. "Spit Hearts" cranks the busted drum patters out through a super hi-fi field of gothic synthesiser.

Closing piece "Behaviour Exercise" places off-thumbed emo-guitar lines and barely uttered exclamations into a gorgeous outro recalling sad boy rap styles from the darkest corners.

Gaming - Scenes From A Deserted City

Following January’s acclaimed vinyl debut from Exterior and summer’s much-loved Kota Motomura EP, Edinburgh’s Hobbes Music label ends 2019 with its first album release, also a debut, from GAMING, a fresh new braindance electronica project straight outta Glasgow.

GAMING is a new solo outing that brings together a lifelong love of music and technology and creating left field, rhythmic electronica. It’s the sound of IDM, nineties techno and mensch maschine computer music that is as spontaneous as it is programmed. It's a bit of a grower and may take time to get under your skin....

“Scenes From A Deserted City is a collection of tracks that started as a set of riffs, loops, rhythms and grooves and unfurled around a sense of growing unease about the future of the urban environment around me.

It’s an album that started out as sound…and ended up as a way of telling stories about the age of anxiety we live in, how our world is changing, and how we find a way through that.

This is DIY electronica from Glasgow – it was made on a growing collection of digital and analogue synths and FX units, including a bunch of modular racks, each with its own idiosyncrasies and character that belies the assumption of the binary.

The studio where it was recorded – an abandoned, and often very cold, school building reclaimed by the community some twenty years ago – offered up stories of resilience, even when all seems lost. (I’m not sure what the mice contributed but they definitely climbed in and out of some synths).

This album is ultimately about my changing relationship with Glasgow, a city I’ve lived in for more than 25 years. It’s about how I feel now about the increasing sense of urban decay and how the city can be a very isolating place. It’s about how I reflect on my younger creative self trying to find a direction but mainly feeling a sense of dislocation and not fitting in. And it’s about the questions I have about how that relationship is changing, how it will be forced to move forward.
The result is a soundtrack for walking home on your own, in that headphone bubble when it’s just you focusing on that music that makes sense to you alone. It’s for early in the morning, after the night before, or going to work with the memories of that slipping and sliding inside your head. It’s about how it feels to be both elated and lonely, to be lost in the familiar, despairingly hopeful.”
