Tryphème - Aluminia

Tryphème

Aluminia

12inchCPU01010011
CENTRAL PROCESSING UNIT
28.01.2020

Ever since dropping her critically-acclaimed debut LP Online Dating through Central Processing Unit back in 2017, Tryphème (Tiphaine Belin) has marked herself out as one of the more unique voices in contemporary electronica. We mean that literally - Belin's productions are characterised by frequent use of vocals, either processed to provide atmosphere or deployed high in the mix as passages of singing/spoken word. When these are wedded to her typically deft electronic productions the results are lush, atmospheric and moving.

Two years on from Online Dating and Tryphème has returned to CPU with the six-track Aluminia EP. While Online Dating leaned into a range of rave styles, Aluminia is more painterly, with Belin putting greater emphasis on timbre and texture. 'Lava', 'Fey' and 'Cry Silent Cry' are some of the most innovative tracks Belin has produced to date.

While another producer would allow listeners to luxuriate in such warm synth tones, Belin doesn't let you get comfortable, constantly surprising you with innovative structural choices or unexpected sounds. The way in which 'Lava' is agitated by chattering voices and processed singing recalls both the uncanniness of Holly Herndon and the maximalism of A. G. Cook, while the synth line that snakes through 'Cry Silent Cry' nods to Lorenzo Senni's recent trance deconstructions. Beats and bass take precedence in Aluminia's midsection.

This is the portion of the record which most closely recalls Online Dating - 'Eedyu' and 'X-Ray Mantra' are more settled than the other cuts on Aluminia, and it's here that the 90s electronica influences that so often inform CPU's output are most keenly felt. Those who enjoyed Bochum Welt's recent Seafire full-length - itself another CPU drop - will be able to get behind these tunes.

The two sides of Aluminia are combined in penultimate number 'In A Cyber Spiral'. The track's eerie beginning, with its ghostly vocals and nagging drums, is reminiscent of Hype Williams. Soon things morph into a leftfield digi-dub replete with speaker-crushing sub. Halfway through Belin wrong-foots us again, cleverly flipping the drums from half-time to a kind of fluttering breakbeat. It's the most diverse and unique production in a record full of them, drawing on everything from IDM to Eskibeat, and a track which furthers Tryphème's status as an exciting new artist on the European electronics scene.

Motor Jazz: Them to Us

2x12inchBAT001X
Bathurst
15.12.2020

This compilation sees the coming together of independent music makers from across the globe to meet in one place and gather as a single entity. That simmering hub of warmth and affection is known as Motor Jazz - a place for artists to congregate and share their devotion for songs that are infused with rhythms created by anodic wires, buttons and other digital paraphernalia. That's electronic music to you and me, and in this case electronic music with swing, a sense of freedom and improvisation that some might call 'Jazz'.

The album opens with the ominous drone of the Mega Corp., sounding like one of the parties responsible for 2020's almost post-apocalyptic feel. It's perhaps an unlikely opener for a what's a positive and optimistic collection courtesy of young musicians from across the globe, but we all need to be reminded of who's in charge sometimes, and Dutch producer Jon Sewi does just that!

The mood soon lightens though, with the soulful strings and enticing keys of Gladdics by the mysterious Black Soyls, before well established German musical artisan Renegades of Jazz brings the family in for It's Tea Time with ticking clocks, warm tea pots and slices of cake, whilst being serenaded by a very vintage sounding horn section.

Serafin Plum almost steer us into drum & bass territory with their off-the-wall percussive nugget Jagged, whilst keeping a calming hand on the shoulder (as all good parents should) with soothing keys, before it's playtime once again.

There's nothing conventional about the Motor Jazz family though, and after tea time and play time, it's time to rave! In Greek mythology, The Maenads were female followers of Dionysus; their name literally translating as "the raving ones". Often they were portrayed as being inspired by the god into a state of ecstasy through a combination of dancing and intoxication, during which time they would dress in fawn skins and carry a thyrsus - a long stick wrapped in ivy or vine leaves and tipped with a pine cone. With a sound ranging between Jazz, Techno, Rave and Breaks their track, Opera, delivers a psyche and Jazz influenced piece with colliding styles, busy drums and rich melodies.

Heading over to Dublin, Ireland, and multi-talented producer, musician and DJ, Donal Sharpson (aka Double Screen) makes his presence known with grandiose brass preempting a four-to-the-floor wood block frenzy in the shape of Sheikah, complete with enthusiastic whoops and a persuasive bassline. Meanwhile, somewhere below the Irish Sea, aquatic artiste Stubby Dials delivers the bass worrying Put It On Ice the only way he knows how - living in a submarine, he emerges from time to time to leave his master tapes on the beach with a note saying "Release this!" before submerging, never been seen again.

Back in the Netherlands, Bram van der Hoeven, otherwise known as Lucinate, is an electronic Jazz producer par excellence. His effortless balance of organic musical roots like Fusion, Bossa Nova and Soul, into the world of modern beat orientated sounds is something to behold, and with The Cards he offsets life-affirming keys with rolling drums reminiscent of some of the seminal liquid Drum & Bass he grew up with.

As the global Motor Jazz family expands, we head to Canada, where the wonderfully monikered Woodpecking Mantis brings a little acid to the party with his squelchy, stuttering and brilliantly entitled Waving At A Melting Square Tooth Of A Specific Rabbit……. We're guessing they like acid a lot in Canada.

We're going down under to Newcastle, Australia next, where things take a more serene turn. Wrenasmir, known to his parents as Craig Smith, used to be a baroque pipe organist before he discovered samplers and synthesizers. Now he makes imaginary soundtracks at his studio for the twilight beachside city that lives in his head - full of vinyl and pixels and bittersweet memories. The gorgeous Lucempight is exactly that.

Keeping things low key and tranquil, Poets And Rockets, the latest offering from Jay Solomon is a horn driven slice of futuristic dub that makes way for The Motion Orchestra's majestic Midnight Sun, complete with Alexander Bednasch on double-bass, Mark Matthes on violins, Andy Sells on drums and David Hanke on electronics and production. Though influenced heavily by neo-classical and jazz sensibilities they occupy a musical space that sits in neither sphere, with a compositional style that deftly fuses the orchestral and electronic worlds. The full Motion Orchestra album, All One, will be released later this year on Bathurst.

Sixteen year old, self taught producer and multi-instrumentalist Teis Ortved is something of a prodigy. The Copenhagen based wunderkind has so far self-released two EPs, and if What, his offering here, is anything to go by, he's going to be making big waves across the eclectic music spectrum for years to come.

If Teis is the new kid on the block then what better way to round off this compilation that with its patriarchal figure. Funki Porcini has over a quarter of a century of recordings in his back catalogue, and has spent fifteen of those years dedicated to the independent UK behemoth that is Ninja Tune records. The Last Recording From Earth is exclusive to this album and is in many ways the perfect closing song. Perhaps more concept art than traditional piece of music, the idea behind it is that an alien archeologist has found this recording tens of thousands of years after humans have disappeared into the sand…. You never know, it might just happen, and hopefully Them To Us will take on a whole new meaning.

Iceman Junglist Kru - Mashed On Pills

Written and produced by Lil Schemer and DJ Financial Ruin.
Mixed at The Ladywell Grime Lab. Shout out to the cops.

Formed from a bond that stretches across time and space, from the rain-soaked Lancastrian hills of Manchester over towards the icy shores of Stockholm, via North down South London and a shared admiration for the hidden reverse of Nurse With Wound and Coil, the concrete surrealism of dead air time grime from the turn of the Millennium and an unhealthy drop of teeth-chattering ecstasy.

The Iceman Junglist Kru's debut recording proper distills the influence of all of these sectors of sound, each as important as the other. If you see a cop, throw this tape out of the car window …

ITALOCONNECTION - NOW OR NEVER

We are back! After almost 2 years since the release of our album “Metropoli”, we decided to release a one off vinyl I2” single that maybe will be part, maybe not, of our future album scheduled for 2O2O on Bordello A Parigi records. After playing live all around Europe and meeting our fantastic audience, we thought it was right to go back to our Italo roots in full effect. “Now Or Never” is an energic and dirty Italo club track going straight to the dance floor, no compromise! On the b-side you’ll find our rendition of the legendary track “(Do You Have) The Force” by the great French project The Droids that we’ve been playing already since a couple of years. Mastering was done by the mighty Alden Tyrell, background vocals by our dreamy collaborator Francesca Gastaldi and graphic design by MILKPLUS.

Steve Spaceks classic dancefloor workout gets the remix treatment from three smoking hot producers. Already featured as one of the exclusives tracks on the recent Eglo Records Vol. 2 compilation the EP kicks off with the highly celebrated Skeptical DnB remix, a track which has been tearing up clubs in a major way for the last 12 months, in heavy rotation with legends like Randal and Bryan Gee.

A true scientist of sound and key component in the current DnB vanguard Skeptical has released on esteemed imprints like Metalheadz, Soul:R and Exit, his intricate yet sparse bass loaded techniques have made him a true autuer of the genre, complimenting Spaceks dancehall fasletto to a tee!

The B-Side features another classic remix, the Duke Hugh Reggae Version, a mix which has been bubbling away on the underground for months, now finally getting an official release. The Netherlands based producer gives the track an authentic dub reggae makeover, a style perfectly suited to Spacek's vocal flashback.

The final remix comes from Eglo associate and Apron records founder Funkineven aka Steven Julien, who takes the song to completely uncharted territories with his frazzled slow mo interpretation. Completely reimagining the song into a bugged out cacophony.

Greville returns to Mad Habitat with a new EP, which, like his EP, continues to thrive in the liminal space in between club jams and living room fare. Elements unfurl through the track’s spacious dub-house sonics, as Greville synthesises all sorts of uncannily natural sounds, further blurring the organic and synthetic textures that characterise their music. The music combines the space-faring heights of B12 with the sonics of the jungle, undersetting the bouncy drum programming with gorgeous, celestial pads and field recordings. The drum tracks are tempered by the more melodic and textural foils; it’s music that invites you to dance.

MIEKU SHIMIZU - I BLOOM

In every aspect of her career, Mieko has refused to be restrained or placed in a box artistically, and new record 'I Bloom' sees a continuation of that ethos!

With a career that has seen her as an acclaimed Japanese
electronic artist and producer, a trailblazing female drum’n’bass
DJ (signed to Haruomi Hosono’s personal label), a collaborator with the likes of MC RIZ (Riz Ahmed) and Mick Karn (JAPAN), and having her own residency at the Southbank, it’s safe to say that Mieko Shimizu is sui generis.

Amalgamating haunting melodies with challenging modular-synth-laden landscapes, the record has equal moments of sparsely instrumented beauty and musical entropy, as layers and rhythms clash and collide in polyphony.

DISKOTOPIA
10.03.2020

Bristol-based multi-instrumentalist producer Memotone returns to Diskotopia for the stunning full-length LP Invisible Cities, undoubtedly his most accomplished work to date, effortlessly joining the dots between Martin Denny, Yasuaki Shimizu, Nurse With Wound, and Mark Isham…

Memotone is the principal alias for Bristol-based multi-instrumentalist, composer, and producer William Yates. As a solo artist, he has released on labels such as Black Acre, Bedouin, Project Mooncircle, and Brownswood either as Memotone or under his other alias Halfnelson. In addition to doing composition work for film and television, he works as a session musician for the likes of Dmitry Evgrafov, Connie Constance, and Phaeleh. He's also part of the Avon Terror Corps project helmed by Bokeh Versions, Giant Swan. Noods et al., and is a member of ATC-affiliated Pheasantry Society. His music has been championed on the radio, a key influential medium for Yates growing up, by the likes of Gilles Peterson, Mary Anne Hobbs, Tom Ravenscroft, Nick Luscombe, and more.

Drawing from Bristol's own sonic history, from the late 80s to the present, as well as the writing of Italo Calvino, Yates has put together 10 tracks on Invisible Cities that sit somewhere between neo-classical, ambient, fourth-world exotica, and post-krautrock. The mix of different timbres of live string and wind instruments, astute synthesizer touches, and skittish drum machine strokes creates an organic and ethereal energy deftly manipulated into a delicately interwoven narrative through Yates's production prowess. Already garnered support from the music press and radio DJs, the album will strongly appeal to a wide range of music lovers and fans of Ryuichi Sakamoto, Dorothy Ashby, Alberto Iglesias, Labradford, Delia Derbyshire, Peverelist, Toshifumi Hinata and more…

Bleeding Ep

12inchGH32
Exploited
15.05.2015

2014 was a definitely a huge year for dance music, with many up and coming artists being thrown into the lifestyle of hectic partying and relentless touring schedules. This also means that those who exploded onto the scene prior are no longer the new kids on the block. A few years is a long time in the life of a DJ, and the first few years are often the maddest.
The Adana Twins are a perfect example of one of these artists, having emerged onto the scene in 2012 with releases such as 'Everyday' and 'Strange', from the off it was clear that they had everybody's undivided attention.' (Pulse Radio) With DJ names like Take It Easy and Friso, it's probably to be presumed that German duo Adana Twins don't take themselves too seriously. That tongue in cheek attitude could be heard on their first productions and remixes. It's now almost almost three years later and the Twins' music vision is constantly developing.

After their highly anticipated release 'Drive feat. Khan' from 2014 the 2 boys from Hamburg are finally back on Exploited. 'Bleeding' features vocal snippets from LA based Human Life. This anthem has been causing massive feedback in their DJ-Sets so far. We hope you like it too. Including also Remixes from The/Das (Life&Death/Krakatau) and Mark E (Spectral Sound/Merc)

Carefully compiled over a 12 month period, each track combines artistic individuality with dancefloor utility. On the second sampler, UK techno powerhouse Alan Fitzpatrick delivers a nostalgic nosebleed rave banger in a modern style on 'Where Haus', XL signing Hugo Massein deals in rolling tech nastiness on 'Restart The Sun', Lo Shea's shuffling, sci-fi beats elevate 'Thousand Foot Waves' while Moniker take things deeper on 'Moving'.

Destiny71z - EP2: Dimdraft

'Destiny71z' returns with his second EP for Eglo Records, a further dark and jazzy exploration through an array of analog hardware, focusing on the Buchla music easel and a stacked modular set up. Raw and unpredictable the EP fizzes and pops across 4 tracks, drawing on the influences of House, Techno, 2-Step and Electro, synthesizing it into something much harder to pigeonhole.

The project is the alter-ego of multi instrumentalist, painter and producer Mathew Kirkis, who recently supported Floating Points on his solo UK/EU live tour. These four dance floor meditations express
a talent well beyond the conventions of traditional club music, it's as much music for the mind as it is for the body.

From the stuttering acid fried 2-Step Techno of 'Technique ZSL' and the shimmering space like odyssey of 'Suckmyskin' to the swirling House steppers 'Dimdraft' and 'OmegaTX', the EP surprises at every turn. Essential listening for fans of Legowelt, Floating Points, Pepe Bradock et al.

Weval - Weval 2x12" + CD

Weval

Weval 2x12" + CD

2x12inchKOM352
Kompakt
10.06.2016

When Kompakt came across Amsterdam-based Harm Coolen and Merijn Schotte Albers aka WEVAL back in 2014, we were blown away when we heard their slow-burning, darkly emotive tracks.

Their debut EP 'Half Age' on Atomnation featured painfully intimate and surprisingly kinetic electronic chamber pop that convinced us they were a perfect fit in Kompakt's family. Following two widely acclaimed EPs for Kompakt and playing numerous festivals including DGTL, Reeperbahn, Iceland Airwaves and Piknic Electronik, we now see the two tackle their self-titled debut full-length WEVAL. What you have before you is not a mere collection of tracks, but a complete listening experience with organic flow, emotional heft and a narrative thread.
Smitten with WEVAL's uniquely personal and catchy approach to producing dark electronic music, it didn't take much to win us over... and so came WEVAL's acclaimed 2014 label debut EASIER EP (KOMPAKT 318), followed by the bold and beautiful 2015 offering IT'LL BE JUST FINE / GROW UP (KOMPAKT 344) which saw the two soundsmiths digging deeper into the granularities of electronic funk than ever before. However, Harm and Merijn's music - while astonishingly fully-formed even in its earliest stages - always seemed destined for more, a bigger format, more space to explore the nooks and crannies of their rapidly evolving sound cosmos. Simply put, they needed to think about an album and their beloved living room studio wasn't cutting it anymore.
An old school building became WEVAL's new home, repurposed to house small creative businesses - but in the summer of 2015, it was abandoned most of the time, with everybody out in the sun while our heroes turned the building's attic into a sweet spot to make some noise, have 24-hour access and lose track of time. And apart from a sketchy tenant being evicted, the occasional soccer game with friends and live gigs across Europe, there really was no interruption to the focussed vibe. It's not like they were looking for distraction anyway: "working on the album all by ourselves in this bloody hot attic was all we had on our mind", the artists admit. And they decided that their album shouldn't sound too clean: "We try to find the beauty in imperfection. It makes things sound more human".
Weval draw their inspirations from no single genre of music but a cumulation of music that inspires them. The results present an astonishingly coherent vision - cuts like the dramatic THE BATTLE, bass growler I DON'T NEED IT or the trippy epic MADNESS share the same DNA of zestful nostalgia, a knack for immersive sound-sculpting and that certain kink in the groove. They also feed on deeply personal experiences and moods, as exemplified by the haunting electronic ballad YOU'RE MINE, the carefully layered, polaroid-tinted JUST IN CASE or the beautifully voiced closer YEARS TO BUILD. And sometimes, it's just an old, out-of-tune piano that stands in the hallway: "Whenever I'd pass by it, I couldn't resist playing it", says Merijn, "so Harm decided to start recording and it became an integral part of YOU MADE IT (PART I)". No doubt about it: this is WEVAL's most powerful and organic material yet - which means a lot, considering the amount of skill already on display in their small, but weighty portfolio.
YOU MADE IT (PART I)". Kein Zweifel: dies ist WEVAL's stärkstes und organischstes Material bisher - was durchaus was bedeutet, wenn man das Talent bedenkt welches bereits in schmalen, doch gewichtigen Portfolio der Band steckt.

'Don Karate' is the project of Italian multi-instrumentalist Stefano Tamborrino. This is the second album under the project, and it's first as a trio. Alongside Tamborrino on drums and vocals the trio features Pasquale Mirra on vibes and Francesco Ponticelli on bass (all three also play keys). Independently each member of the group is accomplished and acclaimed within the Italian jazz scene, and together they represent more than three decades of experience.

Among others they have collaborated with Mop Mop, Oumar Touré, Hamid Drake and Enrico Ravva and have toured Europe and America.
The music is a detour from the jazz world these musicians normally inhabit towards jazz's modern descendants, namely hip-hop and electronic music. Think thick hip-hop grooves and electronic, cinematographic melodies. 'Don Karate' is the Italian take on the new jazz sound that has been emerging over the past few years between Los Angeles, Chicago and London.

EXO - Bit-Tuner

Exo

Bit-Tuner

12inchOUS027
OUS
11.02.2020

Swiss bass music maestro Bit-Tuner presents a widescreen ambient album about interactions and the traces they leave behind.

Bit-Tuner's 7th album "EXO" marks a milestone in his work: the widescreen and mostly beatless opus focusses on musical storytelling and atmospheric depth. The album was written and recorded towards the end of Bit-Tuner's 2-year stay in Athens.

Influenced by topics like the social and structural turmoils of the past years, the strong connections between communities and the sensation of being in an economic deadlock, Bit-Tuner wrote an album that urges to be listened to in a (self-)reflective way.

It is a call to listeners to listen closely, delve into the sounds surrounding them in any given moment and draw a quiet but firm inspiration from within. Following his field recording-based albums "The China Syndrome" and "The Japan Syndrome", "EXO" highlights his interest in cinematic music and soundtracks.

For the album, Bit-Tuner is collaborating with film maker Joerg Hurschler, who is creating animated footage that will be screened, mixed and live scored at Bit-Tuner's shows in 2020. Joerg Hurschler's work tells the story of molecular objects being propelled into a world similar to ours, where they operate, interact and affect their surroundings, creating and leaving behind something new and strange. What is it that surrounds us, and how do we approach and interact with forces that are beyond our (apparent) reach?

Jérôme Noetinger & Liz Rácz - Revox, Paper, Scissors

Jérôme Noetinger: Revox B77 reel-to-reel tape recorder. Liz Rácz: paper, pencil. Inscribing of sound and drawing. The act of inscribing is the raw material. The inscription is transformed on a loop of magnetic tape. Edited from recordings made during performances in Melbourne, February 2017 and Poitiers, September 2017.

Using a singular repetitive gesture, Liz Rácz draws on a 10 metre-long roll of paper that she gradually unfurls, revealing a mass of regular strokes. Jérôme Noetinger records this gesture on magnetic tape, capturing, repeating, and transforming it. An auscultation of detail in a magnetic tape loop continuum.

The Dining Rooms - Art Is A Cat

"Art Is A Cat" is The Dining Rooms' eighth studio album - thirteenth if we also consider five remix and rework records - in over twenty years of career. It comes out five years after the fully instrumental "Do Hipsters Love Sun (Ra)?", and shows itself as a new milestone in the artistic path of the Milanese duo formed by Stefano Ghittoni and Cesare Malfatti.

In fact, "Art Is A Cat" hosts every facet of The Dining Rooms' music, mostly nourishing the intuitions delivered in past albums such as "Experiments in Ambient Soul" (2005) and "Ink" (2007). It preserves all the characteristics of their typical signature: songs balanced between folk and soul, dub expansions, instrumental hip hop and cinematic atmospheres. Not to renounce to any of these aspects and given the high quality of the recorded material, Stefano and Cesare decided not to sacrifice anything, and wrote and produced a 19-song full-length for a total duration of about sixty minutes.

"Art Is A Cat" also hosts a large group of guest singers, both historical voices of the band and absolute novelties, who also co-wrote the lyrics; the vocal parts are interspersed with the group's instrumental classics, from funk-fueled visionary downtempos to more experimental micro-songs. Sean Martin and Georgeanne Kalweit therefore return with two songs each (one of the two sung by Georgeanne has its lyrics written by Jake Reid, a London-based singer who already collaborated with The Dining Rooms in "Lonesome Traveler" in 2011).

Among the new entries we have, first of all, the Italian-Tunisian Rahma Hafsi on the sensual ballad "Little Girl" sung both in English and Arabic, while the very young Italian-Salvadoran Beatrice Velasco Moreno sings, together with Sean on backing vocals, the spoken-word "Teach Me To Dance", the spiritual "Sweet Love" and the title-track, an orchestral folk moment among the most inspired ones in the entire band's history; Lola Kola, queen of Tropicantesimo, also brings an absolute novelty in the world of The Dining Rooms, presenting for the first time an Italian-sung piece: "Nella Sua Loca Realtà", a post-melodic song dedicated to the fragility of love.

The vocal parts series ends with two episodes in which Stefano resumes his past as a singer (in the '80s with Peter Sellers & The Hollywood Party) with the Indian-flavoured "Ohm And Raga" and the existentialist ballad "She Says I'm Bad".

"Art Is A Cat" is therefore a complete and very fascinating album, destined to excite and leave its mark.

Watkins/Peacock - Acid Escape (Volume One)

"Two serpent synths … Liquid sky … Two tonal tails traveling together and ripping apart… Fragments of notes creating a sky full of treasures…Galloping rhythms in drenched chords and shimmering sine waves …"

The new duo of electro-acoustic disciple, Zachary James Watkins and analog spacesynth master, Ross Peacock conjures a new possibility of tone, rhythm and light. Influenced by the likes of Dub, Krautrock and experimental pioneers Cluster, Brian Eno and Scientist, their live improvised blend of psychedelic electronica embraces the fragility of analog and digital hardware systems. Watkins/Peacock engage in vibrant patterns over time with an investment in exploration and exchanges.

Watkins has recently returned from Carnegie Hall, where Kronos Quartet performed his original composition "Peace Be Till". In 2017, he composed and performed an hour long score for the 35mm film "Black Field", collaborating with acclaimed filmmaker, Paul Clipson. His duo, Black Spirituals, has released records on SIGE and The Tapeworm and toured Europe extensively including a six week stint with Earth. They have since received glowing reviews from the likes of The New York Times and The Wire.

Ross Peacock with his band, Mwahaha, have performed extensively in the U.S. performing a live Boiler Room set following the release of their first full length on Plug Research. They were invited by Warp Records to perform at their SXSW showcase where NPR's "All Songs Considered" named them one of their Favorite Discoveries of SXSW. Mwahaha was later invited to the UK to perform alongside Sigur Ros at The Eden Project after appearing in London with Damo Suzuki and Andrew Weatherall. He has been featured in Vice, Mojo, Spin, NME and has collaborated with Merrill Garbus of Tune-Yards and Jel/Odd Nosdam of Anticon.

The Watkins/Peacock duo have since performed a live film score at the third annual Haxan Film Festival, opened for the Fred Frith Trio and in May 2018 appeared at MUTEK San Francisco playing alongside Aux 88, Errorsmith, and Francesco Tristano/Derrick May. The duo are in the wake of the first E.P. of the thematic series, Acid Escape.

GRUPPO DI IMPROVVISAZIONE NUOVA CONSONANZA - Eroina

There are still so many treasures to be discovered out there, but once you find a gem like this you can definitely put the research on hold for a little while and give it a deep listen. Recorded at Fono Roma in 1971, Eroina is a series of haunting improvisations - each one inspired by the effects of a different drug - made of whirling electronic glitches, skronky horns, pounded piano, funky drums and weird tape experiments delivering the best drone/spaced/drugged out free jazz performed by the legendary ensemble of Ennio Morricone, Mario Bertoncini, Egisto Macchi, Battisti D'Amario, Franco Evangelisti and Walter Bianchi. A timeless masterpiece.

Breaka - Rory's Theme / Puffer Jackets

repress !

The fourth release is a big one for Holding Hands as they branch out into brand new territory with their first new signing on the label. Breaka usually runs in very different circles, producing footwork, juke and DnB from his home in Leeds. These are the first tunes of his at a slower tempo to be released but you can certainly hear those in6luences loud and clear in these certified UK 125-130bpm bangers.

Rory's Theme has the tension of an early Metalheadz release but when it drops it makes the hair stand on the back of your neck. The synths fly high with exultation whilst the 808 sub kicks and rolls up and down your body. The track has the truly rare combined qualities of a pure elation mixed with enough stank face to get your gun fingers punching through the heavy air of a pounding club. Basically, it's a certified peak time weapon.

As has become customary for Holding Hands, Puffer Jackets sits bang in the middle of several difference genres and influences. The sound of 2009-2012 UK bass mixed with the grime and 2-step of 2018. This one will turn a club upside down and inside out. You better hope you aren't standing too close to the subs when it kicks in...

For the B2 Holding Hands head honcho Desert Sound Colony steps in for remix duties of Puffer Jackets. Slightly slowed and dubbed out, this one rounds out the EP perfectly with a deeper take on the Breaka sound. Perfect for the beginning of a night or for a hypnotic section of a set late on, this one is built to captivate you and take you drifting away...

All three tracks are produced and sculpted for the club. They want big sound systems and dark rooms. Close your eyes, hold hands and experience transcendental space flight...

Suade - Citadel EP

Suade

Citadel EP

12inchADAPT07
Adapted Vinyl
14.11.2019

Adapted Vinyl was a UK based techno label active in the late 90’s that picked up regular DJ support from taste makers of the time ranging from Jeff Mills to Mr C.

This, the label’s 7th record disappeared before a public release when the Integrale Muzique distribution company went out of business in 2008, but now gets its first official release date after years of very limited availability

Label founder Suade is the artist behind this release and these days he is best known as a highly-sought-after mastering engineer working for artists like Dense & Pika, Paranoid London, Jamie Jones and Vitalic.

Focusing his energies into family life and the fine tuning of other peoples music it’s rare to see Suade’s own music on a new release, but this hasn’t stopped him from collaborating on original tracks with the likes of Magda and Radioactive Man in recent years.

The EP has four contrasting tracks all with different moods and tempos all blended with Techno’s classic motoric drive.

With it’s absence from the usual music marketplaces creating something of a mystery this record ended up receiving a new, unofficial name on Discogs - The Citadel EP which is a title taken from the broken-beat second track on the B side of the record.

The Citadel is just one of the highlights on this eclectic EP, as it’s a Latronic Notron sequencer workout that patiently deploys layered synths in ever-shifting cross-rhythms for a languid 5 minutes before its deep, underpinning bass arrives evoking desert travel and arrival.

Baikal, named after the huge freshwater lake in Russia, is another stretched out meditation on tone and harmony acting as a foil to the delicate and vibrant Latin American percussion that filters in and out through a massive stereo Moog Modular system creating an energetic yet static, ritualistic atmosphere.

Trajan - the most driving track on the EP, gives a nod to the Probe era Richie Hawtin sound with a touch of Drexciyan melodics with shuffled percussion and bleeps over a snaking TB303 shaped bassline where the classic Acid box is given the role of control sequencer only commanding the thick, dirty oscillators of the big Moog.

A1 track Felix is a contrast yet again. A big room melodic Techno piece with another massive bassline and an almost orchestral level of layering, building to nine counter-melodies in total before letting rip with a classic TB303 acid line that builds from the heart of the track.

Advanced Audio Research - Top Secret

Giorgio Di Salvo signs a new chapter in his Advanced Audio Research, a blast of free-form junglish mayhem, once more released in coproduction with Haunter Records. This time ripe with the furthest experimentations and most far-out cuts coming out of the AAR headquarters. That’s right, we’re dealing with some serious freakishness, using the same generative process and wicked arsenal of tools as his previous oblation, Di Salvo managed not only to top it's rave-ready madness, but also to venture far beyond, arranging the gnarliest noises into wild, crooked beats and mocking melodies.

AAR’s music is still closely related to the heaviest dance music paradigms like breakcore and flashcore, tho it maintains such a unique character and such a distinctive sonic palette that makes it stand within that musical world in a truly refreshing manner.

Afuma - Songs From The Shore

In Japanese folklore, Afuma indicates a time of day marked by spiritual or mysterious encounter. In Latin, one who inhales. Together as Afuma, Stefan Tcherepnin and Taketo Shimada breathe sepulchral energies into the brooding, cosmic fringes of guitar-based song vernacular. Tcherepnin’s baritone and Shimada’s lap steel guitar intertwine, smearing across world’s-end horizons that propel Tcherepnin’s ragged, foreboding vocal delivery and it's lyrical portents of departure, of life’s vessel unmoored onto a fathomless periphery.

Shimada, a Tokyo-born musician and artist who has lived with Herbert Huncke and worked with Henry Flynt, also contributes Indian double-reed instrument shehnai to the band. And Stefan Tcherepnin, a contemporary artist and composer in fourth generation (continuing the family heritage of his great-grandfather Nicholas, grandfather Alexander, and father Ivan Tcherepnin), embellishes their dirge-scapes with electronics from the Sonica, a lute shaped version of the Serge synthesizer developed by his uncle.

A family friend and student of Maryanne Amacher, Tcherepnin’s piano playing alongside Marianne Schroeder’s additionally graced Blank Forms Edition’s publication of Amacher’s Petra. Tcherepnin and Shimada are joined by drummer David Silver for Songs From The Shore, their debut LP, featuring artwork in the form of A Rip In The Void, a newly commissioned painting by Bobby Beausoleil. “I was so impressed... It definitely had that sort of trance vibe.” — Jimmy Page.

Terr - Energy Sync

PHANTASY SOUND
03.12.2019

Returning for her second release on Phantasy, Terr captures further dancefloor magic on the blistering ‘Energy Sync’.

Following the success of ‘Tale of Devotion’, the Brazilian-born, Berlin-based producer continues to distill her exquisite instincts into an irresistible single that blends electro and disco influences with flawless song writing.

Built around a heartfelt and vulnerable refrain, the ‘Club Mix’ takes just seconds to explode into a wide-eyed anthem in waiting, maintaining pure ecstasy and cascading energy until it’s final, sensual modulation. On the contrary, Terr transforms the track into a wistful, weightless electro-pop moment for the ‘Original Mix’, building a slower if no less celebratory groove around her own vocals, which also feature as an acapella.

DESIRE RECORDS

Hailing from Los Angeles, California, Deathday formed toward the end of 2007, solidifying around brothers Alex Guillén and Giovanni Guillén. Constructed from the aggressive textures of early industrial music, the ambience of cold wave and shoegaze, and the
carnal energy of post-punk, Deathday was originally devised to manifest ideas specifically designed for a live duo accomparied by vintage drum machine. As their sound progressed and became more focused, Joevanie Lopez was recruited to add drums and expand the outfit's execution. With the addition of new bass player Jeramy Graham , the band has already begun work on a second full-length album, and is currently recording a number of tracks for planned split releases with The KVB (UK) and LA's Bestial Mouths, and contributions to upcoming compilations on Sweating Tapes, Downwards and Italy's Mannequin...

Frederik Valentin & Loke Rahbek - Elephant

“The combined forces of Frederik Valentin & Loke Rahbek first found a way into the world in 2017 with the album 'Buy Corals Online'. Together they now present 'Elephant', an eight-track album that composes an inquisitive space with it's parts.

The economy of movement across Rahbek and Valentin's new collaborative album makes for a gentle transmission of its abstract intimacies. This presence, which we caught glimpses of on their previous work 'Buy Corals Online', is shaped by the delicate interplay between acoustic instrumentation and synthetically rendered sounds. Hauntingly melodic at times, the album feels like a suite of uncanny lullabies that grant access to realities that can only be found in dreams.

Rahbek and Valentin are always leading us somewhere and showing us something—one piece of the scene at a time, coming and going with different parts of a puzzle that eventually settles into a complete form. And through all this we perceive an inviting restlessness on their behalf, encouraging us to stray further and further into the private space of 'Elephant'. Valentin is perhaps best known for his work in the exquisite atypical pop group Kyo, though his widereaching music and videography practices covertly underpin his flagship projects.

Most recently, Valentin has been working with Yung Lean as both producer on his 'Nectar' album as Jonatan Leandoer127 as well as on their commission for Sweden's Cullberg Ballet. As Croatian Amor, Rahbek has made similar forays into unworldly pop and his work with Christian Stadsgaard as Damien Dubrovnik has been as critical as their cofounding of Posh Isolation.

Modest interventions from processed field-recordings and semi-erupting synths invite you to zoom in enough to hear the human hand. An attention to listening, to how sounds cradle the small movements and gestures that naturally accompany the playing of guitar, piano, and viola, is acutely developed by Rahbek and Valentin.

It's in this way that 'Elephant' persuades us that even small stories unfurl into the most intricate and tremendous of sagas"
